Summary

Witchcraft is condemned as cooperation with Satan that first destroys the perpetrator and then seeks to harm others through vengeance and malice. Christians must trust God’s providence and timing, as illustrated by Zechariah and Elizabeth, rather than attempting to control suffering or the future through occult practices. Anyone involved in occult harm or victimized by it should turn to the Orthodox Church, repent, confess, change their life, forgive others, and seek freedom exclusively from Christ.

This evening I would like to speak—if I may use the expression—about a wound that is afflicting humanity and this region in particular. It is the wound known as witchcraft.

A person, in order to vent his spite against someone else, enters into partnership with the devil.

First he destroys himself, and then he destroys the other person’s whole character and personality. This usually happens among people who have no relationship with Christ, because if someone is truly a Christian, he will not do such a thing. And if the other person is also truly a Christian, he will suffer no harm from this demonic action. For the most part, however, this takes place between people of whom one could be described as an instrument of Satan, while the other is ready to be devoured by Satan. For I want you to know this:

No one can harm us—not even Satan himself; not some lesser demon, but Satan the great one, Beelzebub, with all his ranks—if we are spiritually armed. For the most part, you will find that those who have come under Satan’s influence through witchcraft, through what is called black magic, are people who had no relationship with the Church or, if they did, had only a distant, superficial relationship with her. They simply went to church to show off their fine clothes. They went, lit a candle, but had no living, organic relationship with Christ. They were not people who lived by the Mysteries.

They were not people of Holy Confession, Holy Communion, and the rest. They were not such people. They merely attended church, received antidoron—the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy—or came once, twice, perhaps three times a year and received Holy Communion without metanoia, without repentance, and without confession. Such people are exposed to every evil thing. Satan need only send some little nephew, grandson, or great-grandson of his, and he has that person completely in his pocket. But when a person is spiritually armed and has a close relationship with Christ, even if every regiment of demons from every corner of the world were to gather against him, they could not touch a single hair of his head—not a single hair. But will people read spiritual books? No. Will they pray? No. Will they confess? No.

So what do you expect? Does someone else even need to bewitch him? He is already under a spell, because he is far from Christ. My subject, then, has two sides. I must speak about those who invoke the devil to harm someone, but also about those who remain spiritually exposed, are harmed, and then present Satan as more powerful than Christ. You want revenge, do you? Why take revenge? What will you gain if the other person is made miserable? What benefit is that to you? Can there be so much malice, so much corruption? Are you so perverted? Tell me: when you see another person wasting away, when you see a married couple unable to have children, when you see a woman growing weaker and weaker—

does that benefit you? Do you not understand that, if you possessed the grace of the Holy Spirit, you would never do this, nor would you rejoice in another person’s misery? Do you not understand that it is Satan within you who is being gratified? How, then, can you admit Satan into yourself simply to watch another person suffer? And since you cooperate with the devil and invoke him to harm a person, a married couple, a household, a home, or anything else, where are you going? Where do you think you are headed? Is it possible that, when you suddenly and unexpectedly die, God will separate you from this partner you chose in this life and place you in Paradise? These things are beyond words. A person cannot imagine what awaits those who enter into partnership with Satan.

Christ came to reclaim human beings and to destroy the works of Satan, yet these people send those very human beings back to him. They are agents of the devil—agents. They labor so that people may depart this life and fill the kingdom of Satan. Agents! Do you understand what it means to be an agent of Satan? Just as the priest and the Church serve God, preparing people and issuing, so to speak, tickets for the Kingdom of Heaven, so too does the person who enters into partnership with Satan in order to inflict tribulations, anguish, loss, and ruin. For Satan is a sadist, and he crushes the human person. He cannot strike at God, so he strikes at God’s creature.

If we have a dispute with someone powerful and cannot, as the saying goes, get our hands on the man himself, we may go and poison his dog, smash his flowerpots, or damage something else of his in order to take revenge. This is exactly what the devil does to human beings, God’s creatures—when, of course, they give him that right. As I have said, no one could harm us if we had not first harmed ourselves by leaving ourselves spiritually exposed. Human malice today is very great. We have reached an age in which our world is demon-possessed. Besides those who bow down to Satan, worship him, and even have churches dedicated to him, there are many others among us who have not understood what they are doing. For if we act and perform the works of Satan, how can we not be with Satan? How can it be otherwise? And so I say...

I do not know whether you have ever had anything to do with these things, whether you know of such cases, or whether you have taken part on one side or the other—either among those who suffered or among those who caused the harm. Take a stand and see to the condition of your soul. If you have done some evil, go and put matters right: practice metanoia, repent, make your confession, change your life, and humbly ask forgiveness, so that the person who has been bound may be set free. If you yourselves have been bound, and you are not the ones causing the harm but are suffering because of others, do not go to a witch to have the spell broken.

It is true that sorcerers can break spells, but they bind souls. If you or someone else has been bound through witchcraft, have the spell broken in the Church, because Satan is a master craftsman. His main concern is not the body. Of course, the body concerns him too, because he is a sadist and wants God’s creature to suffer. But his chief aim is to seize the soul. He has already seized the soul of the person who partnered with him to commit the evil; now he wants to seize the soul of the victim as well. Because that person is suffering—and because relatives and others in the household are also distressed and suffering from the harm—they run to a witch, who will easily take care of it for a few dollars. What actually happens in such a case? It is not that the witch commands the devil. Rather, when the devil sees them going to one of his own servants, he withdraws, and the afflicted person finds relief.

The person thinks this happened through the healer’s power. It did not. It happened through deceit. Satan withdrew. The same thing occurs with what people call removing the evil eye. The Church acknowledges the reality of the evil eye and has prayers that she reads for the afflicted person. But the work itself comes from Satan. It is not some power of an evil gaze; Satan does it. And when Satan sees Mrs. Katina, Mr. Yiannoulas, or someone else removing the evil eye while reciting the Lord’s Prayer, do you know what he does? He withdraws. Mrs. Yiannoulas is then regarded as a saint. She herself begins to believe that she is holy and possesses this power, while the sufferer looks upon her as a savior. It is a trick of Satan.

He is the one who first caused the harm, and now he withdraws. Since they did not go to the Church but returned to him, he rejoices: he has healed the body, but captured the soul. The same thing happens with what are called magic spells. When you go to a witch, it is easy. You do not need to fast. You do not need self-restraint. You do not need metanoia and repentance. You do not need Holy Confession or Holy Communion. The devil has no need of any of these things, and for a little money he makes you well.

But when you come to the Church, you will fast, repent of your sins, make your confession, and receive Holy Communion. Others in your household will fast as well. Then Satan will depart from both your body and your soul. With the witch, he will leave your body more quickly, but he will take possession of your soul.

Once he has taken your soul, because you chose to make use of him, he has no further need of your body. This is a distinction people must understand and keep carefully in mind, because many, as I have told you, fall into such things. Whenever you see a house where these things are practiced, point it out and warn others to avoid it as much as they can. For a person who does such things is, as I have said, an agent of Satan. He will by no means escape judgment, because he tears down everything together. Everything Christ came to accomplish, this person tears down. He tears down Great and Holy Friday; he tears down the Precious Cross; he tears down the Incarnation. He tears down everything and leaves nothing standing. For all these things took place to rescue the human person from the devil, while we send that person back to him. Do you understand what that means? It is as though you were saying, ‘Christ, I do not care that You were crucified.’

‘I will punish him. I will put the devil inside him. I will do this to him and that to him.’ Of course, the victim is found spiritually unarmed, and so Satan does these things to him. He too bears some responsibility, because he took no precautions. I see that you keep your homes double-locked and even fasten chains on the inside. Some have installed devices that immediately alert the police when a burglary occurs. You have taken extensive precautions against theft, fraud, swindling, and other crimes. Some carry no cash at all and use only checks because they are afraid of being robbed in the street. And they do well: it is the fruit of their labor and their livelihood. But what do they do for their soul? Nothing at all. They behave as though nothing were happening, as though the soul faced no danger, as though the soul did not have the devil as its enemy, together with all his instruments and all the people who serve as his instruments—as though the soul needed no protection.

A person leaves his soul unprotected, and because he leaves it unprotected, Satan finds it defenseless. Then we see the results we see—and they are many, very many. Certain people are instruments who do this work. There are others who follow the same pattern: mediums, coffee-cup readers, card readers, and so on. Beneath the cup, behind the medium, and beneath the cards, regiments of devils are hiding. All these things are connected with the loss of the human soul. Because a person has no trust in God or in divine providence, he goes to a coffee-cup reader to ask how things will turn out. He goes to a card reader to ask whether he will take another man’s wife, or whether she will take another woman’s husband.

They serve no other purpose. The true Christian trusts in God. He waits for God’s clock; he always waits upon God. He has trust. Ask God, and then wait. God’s clock does not keep time as ours does. For the most part, God’s clock seems to run late. Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed for a child, and God gave them one fifty years later. They prayed while they were still able to have a child, and the answer came when they were approaching ninety and one hundred years of age. God’s clock works in the way that benefits both the human body and the human soul. Suppose, for example, that we want the sickbed in our home to be removed—that is, we want the sick person to recover. Christ sees why we want it. He sees that we want it because a feast day is coming, the bed must be moved out of the way, and we are planning a dance and need to receive guests. God does not remove that bed. ‘Leave it there,’ He says. ‘I am saving you; I am preventing you from harming yourself.’

What do we do then? We resort to other, unlawful means. We even enter into partnership with the devil so that, willingly or unwillingly, the sickbed will be removed and we can bring harm upon ourselves. God is all-wise, and God is love; He knows how to deal with every human being. Perhaps it was beneficial for Zechariah to endure the sorrow of not being given a child until that chapter seemed closed. His wife had ceased to have her monthly cycle, he had grown old, and the dream of a child had ended. Perhaps he felt hurt that, although he was so righteous, God had not heard him. Yet if God had given him a child then, Zechariah might have treated the child as a plaything, indulged his every whim, and lived only for him, doing what we do when we treat our children like ornaments and possessions. God could have given him such a child. But instead, He gave him this child:

a man who became the Forerunner, John, of whom it was said, ‘Among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Forerunner.’ No woman has borne anyone greater than John the Forerunner. This was God’s providential dispensation, intended to honor Zechariah all the more. When God wants to prepare a magnificent package for you, when He wants to send you a great bouquet, it takes longer. Do not try to force God. Say your prayer and repeat, ‘Thy will be done.’ Knock, and then wait. Learn to wait for God. God trains each human being in His own way. Therefore, whenever such an evil befalls us, our nous—the spiritual intellect—must immediately turn to this thought: ‘My door was open. I was found unlocked and defenseless. I am at fault. You may enjoy your moment, devil, but now I will practice metanoia and repent.’

I will change my life, and what I failed to do sooner, I will do now. And I will serve you with an eviction notice—for an eviction notice can indeed be served. Christ comes and serves the devil with notice to leave: “You have no business within this creature. You have no business here, within this person who has been baptized and chrismated. You have no business here.” Of course, it was through the person’s own negligence that the devil came and made his dwelling there. But now he is served with an eviction notice. This is how you should guide others; and if such a thing should happen to us, this is how it must be set right. There is no such thing as luck. There is the providence of God. “He is lucky”? False. “He has a mountain of luck”? False. Is our stature our own achievement? No. There is the providence of God.

Faith, God, hope. I remember once, when I was working in Piraeus at the Port Authority, I stepped outside for a moment and came upon a blind man selling lottery tickets. He held his cane out before him, carried the tickets in his hand, and walked along calling, “Lottery tickets, lottery tickets, lottery tickets.” He did not say “lucky lottery tickets,” as some people do: “Lucky lottery tickets!”

“I cannot see you with my physical eyes,” he told me, “and I do not know who you are; I have never even heard you before. But I see you with my spiritual eyes, and I see that you are a sensible man. So I would like to tell you that there is no such thing as luck.” When I heard that, I thought it was a joke. “What are you saying, Uncle Dionysios? We are talking about luck! ‘If your luck is a mountain, go forward; if destiny favors you, walk on,’ and all the rest. What are you saying?” Nothing moved him. He stood firm as a pillar. “Then what does exist?” I asked. And he told me what I said to you earlier: “Faith, God, hope. There is no such thing as luck.” I did not know what sort of man he was. I could see him, but he was a devout man.

The following Sunday, I stopped at the Church of the Holy Trinity to light a candle, because at that time I was only a candle-lighting Christian. I saw him there, being led by a woman who was evidently his wife. She helped him up the steps toward the sanctuary so that he could venerate the icons, and afterward he received Holy Communion. Later, when the time came for me also to return to the Church, in 1950, I remembered the words of Uncle Dionysios. To this day I see that it is the hand of God that guides those whose hearts, as the Church says, are wholly devoted to Him. But our hearts are not like that. We do not wait for God to send us our husband. We do not wait for God to send us our wife. We do not look to God for our daily bread or for our happiness.

We look to luck and to other forces. Satan exploits all this, gets us into his grasp, and leaves us far away and unarmed. Yet the hand of God is always present, both with those who do not live according to Christ and with those who do. Many times we see people who have nothing at all to do with Christ receiving extraordinary help, and people say, “He must have had an angel or a Saint protecting him. Why is God helping someone like that?” Because God sees, for example, that ten years from now this person will return to Him, so He gives him an extension of time; He grants him credit. When someone becomes financially ruined, they do not immediately put him in prison. They help him so that he can keep going, get himself out of the mire, and stay afloat. Christ does the same for him.

So never seek answers in a coffee cup, in cards, or from a medium. Mediums have also extended their hold over people who are mourning. These women and men who play the role of intermediaries claim that they have the power to bring back someone dear to us—a person who has died, who simply took a train an hour earlier and departed before us—so that we can speak with him and find relief. Someone says, “I spoke with my child.” Are you serious? You spoke with Satan, who imitated your child’s voice, because he knows it. You spoke with Satan; you did not speak with your child.

If souls could leave their place whenever they wished and come here through a medium, there would be no one left in Hell; they would all depart. What did Father Abraham say when the rich man asked him to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool his tongue because he was in torment? “Even if we wished to come to you, or you to us, it would be impossible. A great chasm has been fixed between us. Neither can we cross over to you, nor can you come over to us.” How, then, could that soul come simply because a lady medium summoned it? It cannot come. I remember a priest who had become entangled in these things. He spoke to me and insisted that there really were spirits, and that spiritualism and mediums provided a service, and so forth. “My dear priest, can anything good come from the devil?”

“Is it really Satan?” he asked me. “I have gone many times, but I have never reached a clear conclusion.” “But you have never prayed. Tell me, how does it happen there?” “Well,” he said, “they have us sit around a table and hold one another’s hands. Then someone comes and speaks to us invisibly, and tells us about whatever is troubling us, and so forth.” “Then do something I will tell you,” I said. “The next time you go and sit at that table, join hands with the others, but inwardly say the Jesus Prayer: ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.’ Keep saying it within yourself, and let us see whether that spirit can do its work.” Not a single séance took place. Half an hour passed, then an hour, then an hour and a half. The medium began to sweat, but nothing happened. Finally he said, “Some evil, unreceptive spirit is among us.” It was the priest, saying the Jesus Prayer—“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”—and he never went back. “You saved me, my dear Panagiotis,” he told me.

“I was deceived. Now I understand that Satan is behind this manifestation as well.” Today he has devised every kind of trap, because people do not trust in God and do not find rest close to Christ. They run into every snare of Satan because he gives them a little carob syrup—he does not give them honey, only carob syrup—and they find a little relief, only to begin all over again. Meanwhile, their wallets grow thinner until they are emptied, and the whole affair continues. Tomorrow that person will appear before Christ. “You never knew Me, never sought Me, and never came to Me. What now? You will go with the one you kept going to. Depart, then, to the devil and his angels. You obeyed what he told you and did his works; now go with him. Since you spent your entire life together, I will not separate you. You must remain together hereafter as well.” I do not know whether my words are falling on deaf ears, but I have encountered...

In Montreal, and here as well, I have encountered many such situations, and they are increasing—as though we were in Athens. Athens today is demon-ridden, and the surrounding districts are bound by witchcraft: married couples, everything. Nothing has been left untouched. Before people even marry, someone has already gone to a witch, and the couple has been bound. Because you did not get the young woman you wanted and she married someone else, you bewitched her. Others go to celebrate Holy Matrimony and find the candlewicks cut off and other such things. You see something cut and consigned to the devil, and immediately everything is thrown into ruin. God came to destroy the works of Satan, and human beings are setting the works of Satan up again. You understand what awaits such people. Their canon of repentance must be severe. Yet I say—forgive me for saying it—that I place the greater responsibility upon those who fall victim to witchcraft and similar things. The perpetrator is merely a pawn.

He belongs to Satan, passes directly from hand to hand with him, and is Satan’s agent and instrument. But why do you not guard yourself? Have you never read the Life of Saint Cyprian, that master of witchcraft? Have you never read how that young girl, Saint Justina, put him to shame? He wanted to bewitch her and hand her over to a certain man, but she utterly humiliated him. “I cannot do anything,” he said. Why? Because she went to Holy Confession, received Holy Communion, and prayed, and so nothing could be done to her. In one place where Basil the Great speaks about the power of the Psalter—that little Psalter we read—do you know what he says? When Satan sees someone holding the Psalter and reading it, he cannot draw near. He approaches from one side, then from another, then another, but he cannot come near. He waits for the person to put down the Psalter

so that he can approach. If Satan cannot storm or overcome someone who simply holds a book containing the Psalms, how much less can he overcome you when you have Christ within you through Holy Communion? Can he? He cannot, because the person is spiritually aflame. Can he approach someone who is praying? He cannot.

Once, a young monk was troubled by this question: “How can a prayer that I say inwardly—‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me’—which no one hears, prevent Satan from troubling me, since Satan does not know what I am saying?” Unless he hears it, he does not know. He is not present everywhere and does not possess the power of God. Only the Godhead in three hypostases knows what you are thinking and what you will think. Satan merely draws his own conclusions from what he hears and from the circumstances. He knows nothing beyond that. If you ask him what the weather will be tomorrow at noon, he knows nothing.

Go to a medium and ask what will happen at noon the day after tomorrow; he knows nothing. He speaks about the past because he knows what has already happened. This question was troubling the young monk, and a Saint appeared to him in a dream and said, “Do you know how it is? You cannot see the coals inside the stove, but their heat reaches you and burns you. It is the same with someone who prays inwardly. Satan cannot approach a person who prays within himself, because he is burned; there is fire within that person.” But we, as you can see, have not done these things, though we know about them. Many people say, “If I went there, I did not go with evil intentions. I was distressed; I was going through a difficult time, and so I went.” Is that the remedy? Should everyone who is distressed go to the devil?

Christ says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Have you ever gone to Holy Confession? Can you tell me how you entered and how you came out? You went in burdened with a hundred and fifty tons and came out light. What happened? Who gave you rest? Who took those burdens from you? How were you filled with courage? How did you become a different person, with new resolutions? They were taken by the One who once stretched out His hands upon the Cross. He took them away, and that is why He now calls people to come to Him, whatever may happen. Yet we do not go to Him. So Satan is almighty, but Christ is not? Satan has love for mankind, but Christ does not? This is our shame. Our shame! That we turn to the one who belongs to Hell is our shame.

And these are baptized people! If such things were done by people who have no connection with Baptism or with Christ, I could understand it. I should accept every cup of tribulation myself and never pass it on to another person. Such a thing should never be done—not only according to Christian life, but even according to basic humanity. People who do such things cannot be called human; they must be called something else. In any case, I repeat: I do not know how you regard this matter, whether it has happened among you, how you deal with it, or whether you are even aware of it.

But I want you to know that it is one of the gravest sins. You are a murderer—a cold-blooded murderer, and a murderer of the soul. You do not kill only the body; you kill the soul as well. You reduce it to such a state that it cannot defend itself, express itself, or react. People who have been found spiritually naked and without grace, and who have suffered the full influence of Satan, become helpless creatures under his power.

Saint Cyprian burned his books in the public square, and today he is a Saint. A young girl conquered him—but she had Christ with her. Despite all his knowledge, despite his malice, and despite the power of Satan, a young girl conquered him, I tell you, because Christ was with her. Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene, conquered him.

Saint Cyprian continues to help people today. Guard yourselves; and if, knowingly or unknowingly, you fall into this sin, make haste to ask God’s forgiveness. Hurry to confess to a priest, fulfill your canon (rule of prayer), and enter upon God’s path. Our other sins are already enough; we do not need this sin as well. Next, I wanted to answer several objections that were raised with me during these days, but I said, “Let us leave them for the final evening.” One objection is this: “Since God is present everywhere, hears us, and Himself forgives my sins, why are we required to go to a spiritual father—to a priest—and confess?” And during these days...

Many people, pressed by the circumstances, wanted to come and receive Holy Communion, something they have unfortunately reduced to once or twice a year as part of exchanging holiday greetings. The matter became even more conspicuous when someone dared to ask them, “Where are you going without first confessing?” One person was heard to say, “I told everything to God, and I am all right.” All right—but how do you know that you are all right? Yes, you told everything to God. But who told you that all is now well? Who told you? Did He say, “Go, My child; all is well. You have My blessing”? No one told you that. You are lying. You pour the drink for yourself and then drink it yourself. As the saying goes, “John pours, and John drinks.” Very well—but is that truly how things are?

What has Christ said on this point? What has He said about binding or forgiving sins? Has He not entrusted this to the clergy, to the innkeepers of the Church? You know that leprosy is the type of sin in the Old Testament. Of course you know this. Physicians gave their judgment on every other illness, but the clergy gave judgment on leprosy. Read the two chapters I am about to name. Read chapter 38 of the Wisdom of Sirach, and you will find: “Give place to the physician, for the Lord has need of him.” In other words, God commends the physician to us.

“The Lord created medicines from the earth, for there is need of them.” Take your medicine as well, He says, so that your body may be healed. Then open chapter 14 of Leviticus and see God, like another Hippocrates, teaching the clergy how to deal with leprosy. For it was the clergy who were to give judgment concerning leprosy. Before a leper could move freely among the people, he needed a declaration from the priest, not from the physician. This discernment even extended to removing lepers from the village or city and sending them far away into the countryside.

And Christ our Lord encountered the ten lepers, who cried out to Him from a distance: “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” What did He tell them? “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” But did You not heal them Yourself? Must they go to the priests? “I healed them, but they must go to the priests.” They obeyed, and as they went, they were cleansed. He did not cleanse them first and then send them to be examined, as though the priests had already examined them and issued a certificate saying, “Go outside the village.” They might have said, “Heal us now, so that we can show them we are well and remain here.” But He did not heal them first. As they went—while walking the road of obedience—they were healed. Be obedient, then, and do not be deceived.

Christ forgives sins, but He does so through the clergy.

The Roman Catholics say, “I forgive you.” Our priest does not say that. When you kneel and he places his stole over your head, he raises his hands and says: “You, O Lord, who said to Your disciples, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose this Your servant as well.” You, O Lord—not I. In Orthodoxy, it is not the Orthodox priest who performs the Mysteries. Who performs them, then? The Holy Spirit, through the priest. Fix this firmly in your nous, the spiritual intellect: it is not the priest who performs the Mysteries. Is it because of his personal holiness? Priests are human beings and sinners too. It is the grace of the Holy Spirit acting through the priest. So here again the prayer says, “You, O Lord, loose him”—not I.

A couple is crowned in Holy Matrimony. Who crowns them—the priest or the Holy Spirit? It is the Holy Spirit, acting through the priest. “The servant of God, so-and-so, and the handmaid of God, so-and-so, are crowned in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The Roman Catholic priest says, “I crown you.”

Who baptizes? Is it the priest who baptizes? It is the Holy Spirit, acting through the priest. “The servant of God, so-and-so, is baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

We must therefore go to the priests, for these are the ministers Christ has left us. “But they are sinners!” What do you want Him to do—send you an angel? An angel would strike you down. If He sent an angel to hear your confession, the angel would strike you down the moment he heard that you commit fornication, kill your children, blaspheme, wrong others, and steal. God has appointed a human being who also bears flesh and may fall into the same sins, so that he can have compassion on you and understand you. This is why we who have families will often confess to a priest

who also has a family and understands married life, children, and suffering, so that he can help us stand firm. There are also hieromonks who live in continence and ascesis, the active ascetic life. Certainly, some hieromonks possess experience and have attained apatheia, freedom from the passions; the Holy Spirit has led them through that path, and we are edified by them. But most of us living in the city have this particular need. So do not insist on finding a saint when you yourself are not a saint. Seek the person whom God, in His love, has appointed. When you are ill, do you take out a photograph of the physician and ask it for advice, or do you call the physician and go to him? You search everywhere, crying, “Doctor here, doctor there!” He writes you a prescription, you take the medicine, and you may still die. It may do you no good. But here, if you do what the priest tells you, you will certainly be healed. Whatever sin you have committed, whatever harm you have done to your soul, and however severely your conscience accuses you, it makes no difference.

This is the one prescription made in such a way that, if you do what the priest tells you, it will help you even if some part of his advice seems a little mistaken. At that moment, it is still for your benefit. Do not listen to those who demand an especially strict spiritual father; they do not know what they are saying. They are proud and imagine they are advanced and therefore need generals to command them. Satan is deceiving them. Even if the priest tells you something that is not one hundred percent in accordance with the Rudder, it will still work for your good. You are not yet able to bear anything more. If you truly wish to advance, God will promote you tomorrow and send you on to higher studies, so that you may become a saint. Some people are therefore wrong to avoid confession. Unfortunately, I have also seen some trying to obtain prayers by stealth.

“Read me a prayer.” What prayer do you want, my child? If I were a priest, should it be a prayer of absolution or a prayer of congratulations? Those who have done nothing have no need of an absolution prayer. Hang that claim around your neck! Since you are such a saint and have committed no sin in word, deed, or thought—very well, you are a dove. Why ask for a prayer? You do not need one. Go on, then, with the curse still hanging over you, and let us see how far you get. What am I supposed to say to you? I read a prayer of absolution, but without confession it is not a prayer of absolution. To pronounce forgiveness, I must first hear what you have done. But since you claim to have done nothing, you are a dove. Very well, go and deal with it yourself. I cannot give you a congratulatory prayer, because this is supposed to be a prayer of absolution, not congratulations: “Congratulations, my daughter, for you have committed no sin. Enter into the joy of the Lord.” But it was all a lie.

Many people have even received prayers from priests who are not appointed confessors. How can that be? Such a priest has no authority to hear your confession. Confession is an appointed ministry. A confessor receives a letter of authorization from the bishop. The authority to bind and loose sins belongs to the bishop alone. But because bishops cannot personally hear everyone, they choose experienced spiritual fathers, give them letters of authorization, and empower them to act on their behalf. If those confessors encounter a difficult situation involving an individual, a married couple, or something similar, they ask their bishop: “Your Eminence, this is the situation. How should we exercise pastoral economy? What should we do?” Then the bishop assumes responsibility. Never believe that you will see the face of God if you have no relationship with the priest’s stole—that is, with Holy Confession.

The road to Paradise begins beneath the priest’s stole. Outside it, no sin is set right. No sin rots away, dissolves, rusts, or disappears unless an eviction notice is served against it through the priest’s stole. The authority to bind and loose was given to the clergy. That is why they are attacked. Does that not strike you? Are there no immoral physicians, lawyers, judges, or other professionals? Are there not people who drink the blood of the poor? There are a thousand such things, yet do you hear any great uproar about them? Nothing. But if one priest so much as looks at someone the wrong way, that is enough—the whole world catches fire. Satan knows exactly where to direct his attacks, but we too must understand why he attacks there and guard ourselves. If Father A does not give you peace, go to Father B.

If he does not help you, go to Father C or Father D. You are not bound to one particular priest. Find someone with whom you feel at peace and can communicate. “But the priest will not receive me.” He will not receive you on Holy Thursday or Holy Saturday, but he will receive you now. He will receive you tomorrow. Who went to confession during the days leading up to the feast? They did not go, and now they complain that the priests have no time. Why, sir, do you wait until Holy Thursday or Pascha to make your confession? Do you want to add fire upon fire? What is the reason? Were there no other days? Did you not have time? Or was the priest so busy that he could not receive you and listen to everything you wanted to discuss? Women especially often go to have a long conversation with the priest rather than to confess. They go to discuss all their family affairs. Very well—but tell me your sins.

Some begin by listing their virtues. “You know, I fast. You know, one of my relatives was a priest. I had a sister who was a nun.” What do these things have to do with me? Did you come to offer excuses? Tell me your sins. Tell me where your tongue has been working like a recording machine. Tell me about your hands, your flesh, and the ten things that trouble your conscience. That is what confession is. Then you will see how many hours all the priests have left to serve us. People also say that there are too few priests and they cannot manage. Then give us priests. Offer your sons. I told you this the day before yesterday as well. Why did you make all of them engineers, lawyers, and the rest? Give a son to become a priest. Otherwise, let us die with no priest to bury us and no priest to chant the Trisagion for us. Then we will understand the harm we have done. Have we given priests to the Church? What do you expect the Church to do—order them from Europe? Are priests canned goods?

We push even devout Christian families away from offering their sons. If we do not give people to serve the Church, who will? Will the secular world give them? Will the Jews, Freemasonry, or Protestantism give them?

Will the Muslims give them, or the others? Will the Buddhists? Who will provide priests if Christian families do not? How can there be no shortage of priests when you have never offered anyone? Yet day and night, in the coffeehouse and wherever else you happen to be, you tear them apart with your criticism. How can this continue? God may take away the five priests we have left, or the two, or the one, and then we will understand the harm we have done. So the question is not whether a priest is a sinner or has this or that failing. That is not the issue. Nor is it enough to say that God is everywhere present. God is indeed everywhere present, but He acts in this particular way. Since God has chosen to act in this way, we cannot prescribe a new way for Him and say, “We will send everything directly to You.” No. He tells us, “I will direct you to the ministry I have appointed.” Remember the example I gave you one evening. I have a check and go to the bank. Do I take it to the bank manager and ask him personally to cash it? He directs me to the clerk and the teller. “Stand over there, sir, and receive your money.” “But are you not the manager?” “Yes, but go over there. I am the manager, yet that is where you will receive your money.”

Are we going to tell Christ how He ought to arrange things? You say you will go to an icon—but what did the icon tell you? What did it say? Are you not afraid to press your head against it and have your head split open? Yet some people are like a stubborn block of wood: they refuse to accept the appointed way. Pride stands in the middle of it all. What method can you propose? You know, Satan will permit us to do almost anything. It is precisely when we fail to do what is right in the right way that he entangles us. This is why Basil the Great says, “The good is not good unless it is done well.” It must also be done in the right manner. Let us pay attention to this. That was one question. There is another question that should have been addressed last night because of our discussion about love, joy, and peace, which are fruits of the Holy Spirit. At one point, while speaking about love and how people ought to care for one another, I also spoke about the family, if you remember, and said that many times we...

Some people complained about what I said concerning our children and their behavior. “So mothers-in-law always cause the trouble?” they asked. “Do daughters-in-law never cause any?” Of course they do. My point was general; I did not exclude them. Unfortunately, they too are often careless. They imagine they will always remain young. Now they are disgusted by the elderly father-in-law’s runny nose, phlegm, and cough, and by having to wash his handkerchiefs. They find all this repulsive. But who will wash yours tomorrow? Do you imagine you will always be a rose and never become an artichoke? You will become an artichoke.

Unfortunately, there are also foolish daughters-in-law who never consider that they too will one day grow old. An elderly man once said to me, “You have not yet become old, Mitsos, so you do not understand the troubles of old age. You have not become old yet.” And that is true. If we thought about these things, matters would be very different. I remember a story I have told you before, though I do not know whether it was here or at Saint Rigas. There was a woman who wore down her husband until he agreed to drive his elderly father out of their home. She finally persuaded him to send the old man away. And where do you think she told him to go? Across from their home there was a cave, and she suggested that he live there. It was summer, after all, and supposedly it would be only for two or three months. She would send food to him with their young child. I do not know how or why the husband gave in. Then he said to the little boy...

He told the boy, “Take this rag rug and go with your grandfather over there to the cave.” The boy obeyed. He tucked the rug under his arm and went to the cave. They all went over there. The boy spread out the rug, measured it down the middle, and took out a pocketknife. “Hold it here, Grandpa,” he said. “What are you going to do, my child?” “I’m going to cut it in half.” “Oh, leave it whole, my child, so I can put half underneath me and half over me.” “No, I’m going to cut it in half. I’m going to cut it in half.” He did not say why. In the end, the grandfather said, “I am lost anyway.” So he held the rug for him, and the boy cut it in half, tucked one half under his arm, and went home. When he returned, his father saw him. “What did you do?” he asked. “Did you take your grandfather over there?” “Yes, I took him.” “And what is that you’ve brought back?” “The rag rug.” “Didn’t you leave it with your grandfather? Did you take it back?” “I left Grandpa half of it.” “And...”},{

“What do you mean? You took it from him?” “I want to send you away with this half the day after tomorrow,” the boy replied. When the father heard that...

He said, “Go and bring Grandpa back.” So the boy went and brought his grandfather home. Unfortunately, we do not think about such things, and woe to us on the day of judgment. Some parents may sow weeds, but do not some of the ladies do the same? One woman was talking with her future husband: “Where will we put this? Where will we put the refrigerator? Where will we put the television? Where will we put this? Where will we put that?” Each time she asked, he replied, “We’ll put it there.” Then she asked, “Where will we put the garbage can?” “Oh, we’ll put it somewhere.” “But where will we put the garbage can?” “We’ll find somewhere for it.” “Yes, but where exactly will we put it?” “Well,” he said, “how big is it?” “I don’t know—as big as your mother,” she replied. To her, his mother was a garbage can.

“Where are we going to put that garbage can?” he repeated. “So, before we have even truly come to know each other, my mother is already a garbage can to you?” They broke off the relationship then and there, and the wedding never took place. They prevented the trouble before it began. We have many such cases. Nothing good comes from this. Another question was put to me, one that is vital for you and also concerns me. I do not know whether you have noticed lately that the Archdiocese is making an effort and holding certain services. I happened to be in Montreal, where a Presanctified Liturgy was celebrated in English for the young people. There were indeed more than three or four hundred young people there that evening. The chanting and all the priests’ exclamations were in English, and a priest had been invited to preach...

He was a Syrian priest who spoke the language, and, as others told me from what they heard, he gave a most beautiful homily for those young people. Here too, I sometimes hear people discussing this matter. Many regard it as though it were something fearful or wrong: “So now we are going to lose our language, and lose the Liturgy in Greek,” and so on and so forth. Very well, let us not lose our language. But should we then lose our children? Do the children not know English? Is English not the language they understand? What are we to do in this situation? At home, the children speak English. At school, they speak English. Tomorrow they will marry and have families of their own. What will they know how to say? They tell us, “I don’t know what the Gospel says.”

So what are we to do? Does Christianity exist only in the Greek language? In what language did those Hebrews of Hebrews celebrate their Liturgy?

At Pentecost, in how many languages did Peter and the others speak during the Liturgy? Did they speak only in Hebrew? They spoke in eighteen languages and dialects: Parthians, Medes, people from Mesopotamia, Cretans, and every sort of people. Each heard in his own language. And not merely in his own language—notice this—but in his own dialect. We, for example, are Greeks. Go and speak with the people of Rhodes, and you may not understand them. Go and speak with the Cretans, and you may not understand them. Go and speak with the Cypriots, and you may not understand them. Go and speak with the people of Roumeli, and you may not understand them, because these are dialects. Each person, then, heard the Gospel in his own dialect. So if these children, who know only English...

If they hear it in their own language, will that not be good? Will some harm come from it? Preserve Greek for us older people. But what are we to do about the young people who are growing up with English? Are they to remain outside? Are they to hear neither the Gospel nor the Apostle reading nor anything else? That is why I think the matter is not quite as we imagine it. Do you understand? We ourselves are failing here, because tomorrow we shall find ourselves facing a void. If I do not know the Gospel, how can I speak about it to another child at school? If I know nothing about my faith, how can I explain it to that child? How can this possibly work?

I saw this effort as something good, and I pray to God that our children may truly be instructed, even if it must be in the language they understand. Whether they know Spanish or some other language, let Christ be proclaimed to them, let Him enter their hearts, and let them understand. The other day, a boy asked his mother, “What does ‘Axion Estin’ mean?” He did not know what “Axion Estin” meant. Because she knew English, she explained it fully to him. “Is that what it means? I never understood it all these years,” he said. “I hear it, but I don’t know what it means.”

The child is growing up learning these languages. I do not think this effort aims to abolish the Greek Church. Its purpose is to convey the faith correctly in English as well—to use every possible means and become all things to all people, as we say, so that Christ may be proclaimed. Forgive me for intervening on this point, but I have heard people discussing it, and tomorrow they will see that good will come from it. Forgive me, and may God forgive you.

Οι ψυχές, αν μπορούσαν να φύγουνε ό,τι ώρα θέλει κάθε μία εδώ πέρα μέσω μέντιουμ, δεν θα υπήρχε κανείς στην κόλαση, θα έφευγαν όλοι. Τι είπε ο πατήρ Αβραάμ, όταν ο πλούσιος ζητούσε από εκεί να βάψει το δάχτυλό του, να του καταψύξει τη γλώσσα, γιατί οδυνάται; «Και να θέλουμε», λέει, «να έρθουμε εμείς από αυτού και εσείς από εδώ, είναι αδύνατον. Χάσμα μέγα ἐστήρικται. Ούτε εμείς να περάσουμε από εκεί, ούτε εσείς να έρθετε από εδώ». Πώς αυτός θα μπορεί να έρθει, διότι τον κάλεσε η κυρία μέντιουμ; Δεν μπορεί να έρθει. Θυμούμαι ένας ιερεύς είχε μπλέξει σε αυτά τα πράγματα και μου μιλούσε και μου έλεγε ότι υπάρχει πνεύμα και λοιπά, και ο πνευματισμός και τα μέντιουμ προσφέρουν υπηρεσία και λοιπά. Από τον διάβολο, παπά μου, μπορεί να βγει τίποτα;

Στο μέντιουμ και πες τι θα γίνει μεθαύριο το μεσημέρι, δεν ξέρει τίποτα. Για τα παρελθόντα μιλάει, τα οποία τα ξέρει. Τον απασχολούσε λοιπόν αυτό και παρουσιάζεται μια Αγία στον ύπνο και του λέει: «Ξέρεις πώς έχει αυτό; Τα κάρβουνα», του λέει, «μέσα στη σόμπα δεν τα βλέπεις, όμως η πύρα σε παίρνει και καίγεσαι. Έτσι είναι», λέει, «και ο άνθρωπος που προσεύχεται μέσα. Όποιος προσεύχεται μέσα του, δεν μπορεί ο σατανάς να τον πλησιάσει, διότι καίγεται, είναι φωτιά από μέσα». Αλλά εμείς, όπως θέλετε, δεν τα έχουμε κάνει αυτά τα πράγματα και τα γνωρίζουμε, εν πάση περιπτώσει. Λένε πολλοί ότι «Αν πήγα, δεν πήγα από κακό. Ήμουνα στενοχωρημένος, ήμουνα σε μια δύσκολη στιγμή και πήγα». Αυτή είναι η συνταγή; Όποιος είναι στενοχωρημένος να πηγαίνει στο διάβολο;

πιέστηκαν πολλοί από τα γεγονότα, προκειμένου να έρθουν να κοινωνήσουν, που έχουν θεσπίσει δυστυχώς κάνα δυο φορές το χρόνο για τα «χρόνια πολλά». Έγινε πιο φανταχτερό αυτό το θέμα και όταν κανείς ετόλμησε να τους πει ότι «Πού θα πας ανεξομολόγητος;», ακούστηκε να λέγει ότι «Εγώ τα είπα στο Θεό και είμαι εντάξει». Εντάξει. Ότι είσαι εντάξει πού το ξέρεις; Ότι τα είπες στο Θεό, ναι. Αλλά ότι είσαι εντάξει ποιος το είπε; Ποιος το είπε; Σου είπε «Πήγαινε, παιδί μου, είσαι εντάξει. Έχε την ευλογία μου»; Δεν σου είπε κανείς. Ψεύδεσαι. Μόνος σου κερνάς και μόνος σου πίνεις. Δηλαδή εφαρμόζεται εκείνο που λέμε «Γιάννης κερνά, Γιάννης πίνει». Εντάξει, αλλά είναι έτσι;

Σπρώχνουμε οικογένειες αγαθές, που είμαστε χριστιανοί. Αν δεν δώσουμε εμείς ανθρώπους στην Εκκλησία, ποιος θα το δώσει; Ο κόσμος θα το δώσει; Οι Εβραίοι θα δώσουνε; Ο Μασονισμός θα δώσει; Ο Προτεσταντισμός θα δώσει;

Τι θα γίνει, λοιπόν; Μόνο στην ελληνική γλώσσα υπάρχει ο Χριστιανισμός; Οι Εβραίοι εξ Εβραίων σε τι γλώσσα μίλησαν τη λειτουργία τους;

Ακούσουνε στη δικιά τους γλώσσα, δεν θα είναι καλό; Κακό θα γίνει γι' αυτό; Κρατήστε τη γλώσσα για εμάς τους μεγάλους. Αλλά οι νέοι που μαθαίνουν αυτή τη γλώσσα, τι θα γίνει τώρα; Θα... Μείνουν έξω; Δεν θα ακούσουν ούτε Ευαγγέλιο, ούτε Απόστολο, ούτε τίποτα; Γι' αυτό νομίζω, δηλαδή, ότι δεν είναι τόσο το θέμα όπως το φανταζόμεθα. Καταλάβατε; Κι εμείς πέφτουμε, γιατί αύριο θα βρεθούμε στο κενό. Κατά εδώ, άμα δεν ξέρω εγώ το Ευαγγέλιο, πώς θα μιλήσω στο άλλο παιδί που είναι στο σχολείο; Πώς, αν δεν ξέρω τίποτα από την πίστη μου, να του αποδείξω; Πώς θα γίνει στο σημείο αυτό;
