Summary

After the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, Christ encounters a father whose demon-possessed son could not be healed by the disciples. Christ alone can deliver individuals, families, and society from Satan’s influence, with prayer, fasting, confession, and repentance forming the prescribed path of return. The Apostles are miraculously gathered for her burial, and the tradition of her empty tomb is presented alongside Christ’s empty tomb as a promise of resurrection for believers.

At that time, our Lord Jesus Christ was on Mount Tabor and was transfigured. When He left there and came down, He met the disciples whom He had left behind. They had found themselves in a difficult situation, because a demon-possessed child had been brought to them, and they had been unable to heal him.

Since we are celebrating the feast of the Transfiguration during these days, the Church has set these events before us to remind us what took place at that time, besides the Transfiguration of our Christ. The father appears in deep pain because of his child. As the other Evangelists tell us—for this incident is recorded by three Evangelists—Christ asked him how long the child had been ill, demon-possessed and under Satan’s influence. He answered, “From childhood.” If we take this into account, we must conclude that the child himself was not the cause of his illness. Many of us, after all, bring illness upon ourselves by our own actions.

With a life like that, far from Christ and the Church, we do not merely become demonized, with one devil entering us, but whole legions of them. Yet the father’s answer shows that the child himself was not the cause. It was not because of his own sins—because he had lived dissolutely, far from God, blasphemous, unrepentant, without confession, without Holy Communion, without attending Church, without fasting, self-restraint, or prayer—so that it was only natural for Satan to enter him. That was not the cause. And so the father had not understood the matter as deeply as he should have. Of course, driven by necessity, since neither the doctors nor anyone else in those days could do anything for the child, he sought another answer.

For every day Satan threatened to destroy the child, sometimes by throwing him into the fire, sometimes over a precipice, and sometimes into the water. When the father heard that Christ was performing extraordinary miracles, he took the child to Christ, hoping that he might receive help and be delivered from this temptation. But he approached Christ as one would approach a physician, not as God—simply as someone who performed miracles in those days. That was how he went. Something else also contributed to the situation: he did not find Christ there. Christ was on Mount Tabor with John and Peter. So while the father was waiting there in person, the Jews were given an opportunity to shake his faith. “Whom are you looking for? The rabbi? I know him. Ah, he is not here. Why do you want him?” “I have a sick child.”

“Some of his disciples are over there now. Perhaps they can do something—but he himself is not here.” That was where they shook his faith. “I tell you I have come for the professor, and now you send me to some little doctor to treat me?” They shook his faith. The disciples then tried; in an instant they commanded the demon, but it would not come out. This was not because the disciples lacked faith, but because the father lacked faith. The father was the issue. The demon would come out in the name of Jesus, and Jesus is always the same. But the father’s faith had been shaken. That is why Christ said, “Because of your unbelief.” He was not speaking about the disciples’ unbelief, but the other man’s. Who had come and made the request? The father. He had no faith, because others had shaken it. And since there was no faith, there was no suitable vessel in which to place the miracle they were asking for.

I want us to understand that faith is the vessel into which the miracle is poured. If you have no faith—no vessel—do not expect a miracle. And if you expect a great miracle, you need a large vessel; you need great faith. In any event, the father did not think he himself was at fault. He blamed the doctors and Christ’s disciples. So far, he had said nothing about himself. He said to Christ, “If You can do anything for us.” Christ took hold of him and turned the whole matter around: “It is not a question of whether I can do it, but whether you can believe. The issue is not Mine; it is yours.” Then the father understood that the child had been suffering all those years because of him—that he himself was the unbelieving one—and that God was correcting the head through the feet.

God teaches the head of the household through the child. The child is tormented so that the ice of the father’s unbelief may be broken. This is a lesson with eternal force. It was not only for that time long ago. The same happens many times today: because the father is spiritually paralyzed, the child is ill. Because the mother is unbelieving and kills her other children, one child becomes ill and suffers. Then we search for the cause; we look for the professor and the doctor to treat the outward result, while the root is diseased and that result has arisen from the root. The root must be healed for the result to be healed. This is an eternal lesson. Therefore, whenever things arise in our lives...

Difficulties, illnesses, reversals, deaths, accidents, or whatever else they may be—we must ask ourselves, “Why has this happened?” We should not simply run to treat the pimples. If a young woman has pimples on her face, will the doctor merely treat the pimples, or will he ask for her medical history and treat her stomach, her intestines, or whatever the underlying cause may be?

That is what all sensible doctors do: they search for the cause so that they may treat the effect. In the same way, whenever anything happens to us, it is not mere fortune, coincidence, or chance, as the world says: “These things just happen.” That is false. Satan says such things to keep us from paying attention to what God wishes to teach us. “Why did this happen to me? Why did this take place? Why this painful visitation? Why this illness? What is its cause? Let me find the cause. Enlighten me, my God; teach me. What do You wish to remind me of through this? What do You wish to teach me? What do You wish to protect me from, and what do You wish to heal in me?” Nothing happens by chance. This man had lived with his child’s condition for fifteen or twenty years. He must have taken him from place to place, spending money, grieving, and suffering, yet never discovering that he himself was the reason the child was ill. The child had given no cause to become demon-possessed from an early age, to become a dwelling place of Satan, and to be thrown now over a precipice, now into the water, and now into the fire. It happened so that the ice of the father’s unbelief might be broken. That was the reason. Therefore, we must always bear this in mind...

Behind everything that happens to us there is a cause, and we need to find it. Doctors say, “We are at the testing stage.” What does that mean? They are searching for the virus, searching for the cause, so that they can prescribe the appropriate medicine or antibiotic, attack the virus, and treat its effects.

A person must think in exactly the same way in spiritual matters. This is how physicians think about bodily matters, and they do very well, according to their science. But in spiritual matters we too must go back and find the cause, because the body is often sick because the soul is sick. The soul itself often becomes the cause, because of the sinful life it leads and its attitude toward matters of faith.

Then the body suffers. The body is a servant; the body is a beast of burden; the body is an instrument. The soul is the rider. It directs and guides the body, and without the soul nothing can happen. That is why I say that today offers each of us an opportunity to examine our own affairs, never looking first to lecture someone else. Look at your own home, your own behavior, your own faith, and your own sins. Come to an understanding with God; be reconciled with God, and everything will go well. This father went to Christ only when all human knowledge had shut him out and necessity compelled him. We too go to Christ out of necessity. Out of necessity we light candles to the Most Holy Theotokos. Out of necessity we light candles to the Saints. We do not love them.

We only need them. We do not want Christ, because He reproves our lawless way of life. He reproves our immoral conduct, our unlawful beds, our dishonest dealings, and our sinful lives—how we encroach upon one neighbor’s boundary and another’s, steal what belongs to others, lie, accuse, and slander. We do not want Christ because He reproves us. Yet Christ does not strike a person; He reminds him. So I think that what has been said today, which both you and I have heard, reminds us of many things and teaches us much. Today the father faces this problem: his child will not obey him. This is the common complaint. Why? Because the family scarcely exists today. Today the family has become merely a place people pass through. The son comes home whenever he wishes, and the daughter comes home whenever she wishes.

The mother comes home whenever she wishes, and the father returns from the coffeehouse whenever he wishes. The home is simply a place they pass through, where they go to sleep at night before leaving and returning again. There is no family today. The child does not obey his father, and the daughter does not obey her mother. The father is seen as an enemy; the mother is seen as an enemy. Why do the children not listen to them? Could it be that these parents do not listen to their own fathers? Could it be that they do not listen to their own mothers? This is largely what happens. We want the commandment “Honor your father” to be obeyed, but we ourselves do not want to honor our own fathers. A man blasphemes Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos in front of his own father, yet expects his child to respect him. How will your child respect you when you do not respect your own father and mother? How can that happen? How can a daughter respect a mother who kills her other children?

Will that daughter not become like a wild beast against a mother who is a murderer? You know, as long as Adam had not disobeyed, even the lions came and licked his hands and feet. But from the moment Adam sinned and disobeyed, they began to bare their teeth and threaten him. Why? “Because you sinned against the Creator. How can I respect you when you show no respect?” Yes, we ourselves must return first. In Patristic literature there are two words: hearing and being heard in return. God will hear you if you also hear Him. Your child will listen to you if you also listen to your own father. Of course, because the child possesses freedom, it is possible for you to be a saint and for the child still not to listen.

But for the most part, that is not what happens. How many parents are utterly irreverent? The parents do not attend Church, do not fast, refuse to have children, and practice no self-restraint. Yet they want their children to be saints, although they themselves are not saints. A father wants his child not to smoke, yet tells him, “Go and buy me a packet of cigarettes.” A mother wants her child not to dress immodestly, wear makeup, or become sexually wayward, whether male or female, while she herself behaves like Satan incarnate. How can these things possibly work? My beloved, Christ alone can put everything back in its proper place and serve Satan with his eviction notice. The call, then, is: “Return to Christ.” Does no one want us? We are to blame. Our sins are to blame. We have now entered the fifteen-day fast of the Most Holy Theotokos, yet there are people who remain without confession and without metanoia, without repentance.

They live unlawfully, kill their children, do not fast, and practice no self-restraint. During these sacred days, where will such a person stand, where will he go, who will cover this up, and who will set it right? We must therefore return to Christ, the only One who can help us. “This kind,” Christ says, cannot escape from Satan’s claws except through prayer and fasting. Children today have become demonized. We feed them from morning until night. Mothers today feed their children ice cream, souvlaki, lamb chops, and one thing after another. Yet in matters of faith, mothers and fathers today are worse than unbelievers. If a doctor tells them, for example, that their child must keep a strict diet for fifteen days, they will do it because the doctor said so. But now the Most Holy Theotokos says it, and Christ says it, and the mother will not do it.

Will that child not become demonized and one morning raise a slipper to strike her on the head? It depends on us. We parents, who are considered somewhat sensible, somewhat more experienced, and somewhat more mature, must be the first to return to the Church and to Christ. We must confess and allow no sin to remain upon us. Then Christ’s hands will be set free, the hands of the Most Holy Theotokos will be set free, and the hands of the Saints will be set free. They will enter our family and say to Satan, as Christ said today, “Come out!” And when Satan leaves, everything will become peaceful. He is the one who confuses everything, obstructs everything, and turns everything upside down so that there can be no understanding. The family becomes a Babylon, as though the father came from one hemisphere, the mother from another, and the children from yet another. He is the one responsible.

He is the one called the devil. That is who he is. And unless Christ casts him out and serves him with an eviction notice, he will not leave. As long as sin remains, he has a stake in us. He will stay there and refuse to leave. The sin must depart; the cause must be removed; the root must be pulled out, so that he too may depart. Then he loses his rights. Then he loses his share. Then he loses his authority, and things return to their proper order. A person then sees differently, because Satan puts spectacles over our eyes and makes us see things differently from the way we ought to see them. We must therefore follow the prescription Christ gives us. For this kind, the prescription is prayer and fasting. These fifteen days through which we are now passing must be days of prayer and fasting. People must return to Christ.

They must practice metanoia, repent, make their confession, and fast according to their strength.

Then Christ will change things for us. If society today has become a jungle, if the laws have been abolished, morality trampled underfoot, the family broken apart, and nothing remains standing, it is because Satan has entered in. The mistress of the house has departed; the grace of the Holy Spirit has departed; Christ has departed, and the robber has entered—the one who leaves nothing untouched. Is there a greater crime than a mother killing her own child? Does a lioness do such a thing? Does a tigress? Does a hyena? Just try to touch a kitten near its mother, or a puppy near its mother—and yet a human mother kills her child. Society has grown savage; the world has grown savage. A few days ago, a lady arrived from Canada with four little children. A cousin of hers from here, another lady...

went to meet her at the airport. And the first thing she said was, “What have you done? Why have you filled the world with children and then come here?” What wickedness! What a murderous thing to say! She said this to an honorable and upright mother who had brought into the world the children God had given her: “What have you done? You have filled the world with children!” How, then, can God have anything to do with people today? Today, if a young woman says that she wants to remain pure, or a young man wants to remain honorable and moral, he is treated as a fool. He is the one everyone mocks and considers stupid, while all the others are thought clever—those who take other women or other men, who live unlawfully, steal, commit injustice, dishonor others, blaspheme, and...

are considered the clever ones, the ones who make up society. How long will Christ bear with us? As He says, “How long shall I bear with you, O evil and corrupt generation?” Do we imagine that because He has not yet pulled away this filthy dish called the earth and crushed us beneath it, He does not exist—or that He has no power? He both exists and has power. But He is longsuffering and waits for each person to repent and confess. He does not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live. This, in brief, is what today’s events teach us: Christ came down from Mount Tabor and met the father who was waiting for Him there, near the village at the foot of the mountain. Yes, this is also the path we must follow, if we are willing. Together with you, I pray to the Holy God...

that the Most Holy Theotokos, who intercedes for us during these days, may illumine us and wait patiently for us; and that we, for our part, may desire to change our lives, repent, confess, and come to Christ, so that He may order the expulsion of Satan, who influences us. Then we may have a worthy life here and eternal life there. This I pray for the whole world. Amen. “O Apostles, gathered here from the ends of the earth, bury my body in the village of Gethsemane; and You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.” These words express the meaning of today’s feast.

My beloved, I do not know whether we have realized that this is another Great Friday. On Great Friday we bury our Christ, and today we bury the Mother of our Christ. Then the Author of Life is buried; today the Mother of Life is buried. For us Orthodox Christians, the event and the feast are equally solemn. If we could be in Jerusalem today, we would witness another Great Friday. We would see thousands of people, even believers and unbelievers alike, joining the funeral procession of the Epitaphios of the Most Holy Theotokos from the Gethsemane dependency and carrying it...

through the gardens of Gethsemane to the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos. She is a person who moves not only the Orthodox but even those outside the Orthodox faith. The Muslims also honor the Most Holy Theotokos, and I would dare say that even some Jews do as well. For she shows mercy to everyone, comes to everyone’s aid, and heals everyone, even if they stop with her and go no further—to the person of her Son, that is, to the teaching of Jesus. For us, this is something very serious. It gives us the opportunity to reflect deeply on death. For...

many times, when we face death—the death of our mother, our son, our father, or any other loved one—we lose our bearings. Every person who is born will also die. If the Mother of Life dies, shall we not die? The Theotokos, the Mother of God, dies; will my own mother not die? Why, then, do I beat my breast, turn the pictures to the wall, stop serving sweets, and give myself over to mourning? The Theotokos dies. God became man and died; shall I not die? Will my mother and father not die? This is a debt that every one of us must pay.

The question is not whether we shall die; the question is how we shall die. That is the real question. Faced with these great events, we must reflect deeply. She had the courage to say, “And You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit. I shall give my body to the earth, for I owe it to the earth. It is a debt, and there I shall pay it. But You must receive my spirit.” This is where each person must take his stand: who will receive his own spirit? The earth will receive the body because, I repeat, we owe it to the earth. “You are earth, and to earth you shall return.” As you know, the human body is made from the elements of nature: a little water, a little calcium...

iron, lime, and many other things in small measure. These make up the body. We owe them to the earth: we borrowed them from the earth through our food, and at death we repay them and return them to the earth. But is the spirit buried? Does the spirit go down into the earth? This is the question, and this is what should concern us. The Mother of Life had the strength to say, “And You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit.” Do we have the strength to say this? And if we do not, why not? Does it require money, labor, or education? What does it require? It requires willingness. Nothing else is needed for a person to be saved. Whoever is not saved did not desire to be saved.

He never cared to discover where he came from, why he came, or where he is going. He imagines that he simply sprouted from the earth, as though he were some tree or plant. Man did not sprout from the earth. God Himself died and was crucified for this human being. A human being is not something accidental. His existence is not a chance event. Man is something great, since God Himself concerns Himself with man. So I say again: this is what should occupy us as we stand before the great event of death and the Dormition of the Theotokos. If you are ever granted the blessing of reaching the Holy Land, you will find a place in Little Galilee where the Most Holy Theotokos, while praying, received the news of her approaching death.

Just as the angel said to her in Nazareth, “Rejoice, O Full of Grace,” and told her that she would become the Theotokos, the Mother of God, so in Galilee he told her that she would depart within a few days. She did not begin beating her breast or weeping. Instead, she intensified her prayer. She did not cease praying, and even the trees bowed as she passed them while going up to Galilee to pray. The Archangel Gabriel appeared to her again and told her that she was about to depart. According to Tradition, she then went down to her house and put everything in order. She gave the few garments she possessed to two or three of her friends, and she summoned the Apostles from all across the earth...

to come and be present at her burial. “O Apostles, gathered here from the ends of the earth.” As you know, after the Resurrection of the Lord and the Ascension, the Apostles were scattered to the four corners of the earth to preach the Gospel. There was no television then, and there were no telephones. How could they know that the Theotokos, the Mother of God, was dying in Jerusalem? Yet in a supernatural way, they were all gathered from the ends of the inhabited world to come to her burial—all except Thomas. Thomas, who was then in India, was not summoned. He arrived three days later, and in a certain sense it was he who found that she had both fallen asleep and risen. I want you to know that there are two empty tombs in Jerusalem: the tomb of Christ and...

the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Neither the tomb nor death could hold the Author of Life and the Mother of Life. This is our great encouragement. All those who claim to be founders or leaders of religions—whether Buddha, Muhammad, the Pope, Calvin, Luther, Russell, or anyone else—if we go to find their tombs, we will find them held fast within them. Their tombs kept them. But the tomb and death did not hold Christ, the true God and Author of Life, or the Mother of Life. This is also a promise to all who believe in Him: one day they too will rise. We Greeks...

were represented at the burial of the Most Holy Theotokos. Representatives were summoned from here, while no other nation had a representative present at the burial of the Queen. Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, Saint Hierotheos, and Saint Titus were the three representatives called to represent Greece at the burial of the Most Holy Theotokos. As an honor, this nation was invited to the burial of the Queen. If you look at a Byzantine icon of the Dormition, you will see the Most Holy Theotokos lying dead, and among the Apostles you will also see two or three figures wearing vestments covered with crosses. These are the Greek representatives who went there and represented the Greek people.

The burial of the Most Holy Theotokos is a great event, second only to the burial and Resurrection of Christ. The signs of these events remain to this day. If a person ever reaches those places, he will truly see what Holy Scripture tells us, what Tradition tells us, what sacred iconography tells us, and what the Church’s hymns tell us. It is all true. This is a great day, but allow me to say that it is also a day of mourning. If our own mother dies, we have no desire for anything. We may accept a cup of coffee, and even that only after much insistence. So how can people revel today? How can they carouse today? How can they dance about? How can they behave this way? This year the feast...

has fallen on a Friday, and the Church does not permit meat today, though fish is allowed. Fish is permitted on the Dormition of the Theotokos, because when the feast falls on a Wednesday or Friday, the day is regarded as mournful, not festive. We do not pay much attention to these things. We simply celebrate and disregard everything else. Mourning is pushed aside, tears are pushed aside, and the lessons of the feast are pushed aside—we are going to celebrate. We are going to receive name-day greetings: “My name is Panagiotis,” or, “My name is Maria.” Yes, but the names you receive from the Most Holy Theotokos are not ordinary names; they carry a teaching. The proper reverence is needed if you are to receive the corresponding blessing. If you act only according to worldly custom, because you are afraid...

that someone might misunderstand you and call you a religious fanatic, then you will gain no spiritual benefit from the empty name-day wishes people offer you, from the bouquet they bring you, or from the sweets they serve you. What matters is that the Most Holy Theotokos should also be present in your home—the very person who is the reason you celebrate today. I do not know how many of you have understood or grasped this. But because of my position and because of this day, I am obliged to remind you. One further point—and I do not wish to take up too much of your time—is this: the feast of August 15 moves almost all humanity, because the words spoken by the Most Holy Theotokos in the hill country are fulfilled: “For behold, from this day forward all generations shall call me blessed.” Wherever there are Greeks, wherever there is Orthodoxy, across all five continents...

people are present for the feast. Indeed, a large proportion also come forward for Holy Communion. As at Christmas and Pascha, so it is also on August 15. People have the good custom of coming forward for Holy Communion. Yet, if I may say so, some come without any preparation. They come because it is the feast day, for good luck, or simply to receive name-day greetings.

But they come without preparation. To reach the Mystical Supper and sit where the fatted calf is served, like the prodigal son, a person must first pass through the words, “I have sinned.” He must admit that he has sinned. He must confess it.

His garment must be changed. He must be clothed in a new one, as the prodigal son was, and then led in to where the fatted calf is served. Yet we come forward “for good luck” without metanoia, without confession, without proper preparation, without making peace with the person we have hurt for one reason or another, and without setting right the financial wrongs that some of us have committed. This is not good. It is not good, because Basil the Great says, “What is good is not good unless it is done in a good way.” Medicine is good. But if I do not take it as the doctor instructed—on an empty stomach, at the proper intervals, and in the prescribed doses—then although the medicine is able to heal, when I take it in my own way it can kill me. The same thing happens in the case of Holy Communion.

Holy Communion should be received only after preparation, so that it may be for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Holy Communion is the rinsing. No woman has ever taken her husband’s shirt or her own handkerchief to rinse it without first washing it with soap. First she washes it with soap, and then she rinses it. That is how it is. Yet some people pay no attention to this. People who do not attend Church, people who blaspheme, people who refuse to have children, people who do not fast, people who do not harbor good thoughts—they come forward today simply because it is the feast day. They bring harm upon themselves. “Many die, and not a few.” Why are there cancers? Why so many incurable diseases? Why so many earthquakes, famines, wars, and so on? Why?

Because we approach Holy Communion unprepared. I do not know who is before me. I do not know who is hearing these words. I do not know how they are presenting themselves, or how they will come forward when the priest comes out in a moment and says, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” I do not know how they will come. But I have a duty to speak, because I know that during these days people are more deeply moved by this great feast and approach the Mystery, yet they do so unprepared. Paul says it clearly: “Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” Therefore, if for one reason or another some people recognize that these words are true and realize that they are not ready, let them postpone receiving and not come forward. Let them prepare themselves, go to Holy Confession, and then come.

But perhaps the priest is the problem. If the priest is not worthy, if he is not the saint you want him to be, if he does not have the grace to hear your confession, forgive your sins, and prepare you for Holy Communion, then neither is he worthy to celebrate the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. How can he celebrate the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist so that you and I may receive it, if, when hearing confession, he is unable to say, “For the forgiveness of sins and eternal life”? After all, we are not forgiven through the holiness of the clergy; we are forgiven through their Holy Orders. When our Christ rose, on the evening of the Resurrection, the first thing He said to them was: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” That was the first thing He told them.

Consequently, the priest acts on behalf of Christ. “You, O Lord, who said to Your disciples, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose also this servant of Yours.” He does not say, “I loose him,” or, “I crown you.” The couple is crowned. Does he say, “I baptize you”? No—the servant of God is baptized. Therefore, the priest is able to do this; he has the authority. He may be sinful, but that is his own concern. That is a matter between him and Christ, and they will settle it between themselves. But in the person of the priest, I see Christ Himself. And if I want the blessing—if I want Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of Christ that I receive, to be for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life, and not for condemnation to Hell or the death of my soul—then I have a duty to follow the path of the Prodigal Son.

I must come to metanoia, to repentance. I must arise, go to Holy Confession, and say, “I have sinned.” Yes. Then the old garment must be taken from me and the new garment put upon me, and only then may I be led to the fatted calf, to the place where the fatted calf is served. Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be opened to the human person. This, then, is what I am saying, and this is what takes place. Let us pay attention to it. And today let each person imitate the Most Holy Theotokos, especially every mother.

As Christ was speaking, a simple woman in the crowd suddenly cried out in her own words: “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts that nursed You.” She was so filled with wonder that she blessed His mother. “Blessed,” she said, “is the womb that carried You, my child, and blessed are the breasts that fed You with milk.” What are these things You are saying? What are these things You are doing for us

today? Are such things said about mothers today? Are mothers called blessed today? Or do we hear people say, “Cursed be the mother who gave birth to you—you who took away the father of my children, you who took away the mother of my children. Cursed be the mother who gave birth to you”? Why?

Because today we mothers are raising possessions, not children for the Kingdom of Heaven. We educate them, but not in Christ. Diplomas, foreign languages, possessions, cars, possessions, jobs, money—but no formation in Christ. And woe to the person who is not formed in Christ as well. Today let us entreat the Most Holy Theotokos to illuminate us: how to live as human beings, how to live as a family, and how to live as the Church. After Christ, great indeed is her grace; great is the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos. Woe to the person who has not come to know the Most Holy Theotokos in this world, and woe because of those mouths whose tongues speak blasphemies against her. Whether we want it or not, my beloved,

we shall meet her there, in the place that is hers. She is the moon beside the sun, just as the Saints are the stars. As there is a material firmament, with sun, moon, and stars, so there is also a spiritual firmament: the sun, the moon, and the Saints as stars. I pray to our Holy God that, where she has gone and now intercedes for us, she may never cease her intercessions. But may we also be willing to listen and obey and to prepare ourselves, so that Christ—and no one else—may receive us: not only us who are here, but the whole world. Amen.

Δυσκολίες. Ασθένειες, μα αναποδιές, μα θανάτους, μα δεν ξέρω τι, μα δυστυχήματα, θα πρέπει να ρωτούμε τον εαυτό μας: «Γιατί αυτό;» Όχι να τρέχουμε να θεραπεύσουμε τα μπιμπίκια. Έχει μπιμπίκια η δεσποινίς στο πρόσωπο. Θα της θεραπεύσει τα μπιμπίκια ο γιατρός ή θα τη ρωτήσει το ιστορικό, να της θεραπεύσει την κοιλία, το έντερο, δεν ξέρω ποια αιτία;

Ό,τι ώρα θέλει έρχεται η μάνα, ό,τι ώρα θέλει έρχεται ο πατέρας από τον καφενέ. Απλώς είναι ένα κέντρο διερχομένων, που κατευθύνονται εκεί πέρα και κοιμούνται το βράδυ και ξαναφεύγουν και γυρίζουν. Δεν υπάρχει οικογένεια σήμερα. Δεν ακούει το παιδί τον πατέρα. Δεν ακούει η κόρη τη μητέρα. Είναι εχθρός ο πατέρας. Είναι εχθρά η μητέρα. Τα παιδιά... Γιατί δεν τους ακούνε τα παιδιά; Μήπως δεν ακούνε και αυτοί το δικό τους τον πατέρα; Μήπως δεν ακούνε και αυτοί τη δικιά τους τη μητέρα; Κάτι τέτοιο συμβαίνει εν πολλοίς. Θέλουμε να εφαρμοστεί μια εντολή, «Τίμα τον πατέρα σου», αλλά δεν θέλουμε εμείς να τιμήσουμε το δικό μας τον πατέρα. Ένας βλάσφημος του πατέρα σου βλασφημεί το Χριστό και την Παναγία, θέλει να τον σεβαστεί το παιδί του. Πώς θα σεβαστεί το παιδί σου, εφόσον εσύ δεν σέβεσαι το δικό σου τον πατέρα, τη δικιά σου τη μητέρα; Πώς θα γίνει αυτό το πράγμα; Να σεβαστεί η κόρη τη μάνα, που σκοτώνει τα υπόλοιπα, η μητέρα;

Η Θεία Κοινωνία, κατόπιν προετοιμασίας, θα πρέπει να λαμβάνεται από τον άνθρωπο για να είναι εις άφεσιν αμαρτιών και ζωήν την αιώνιον. Η Θεία Κοινωνία ξεβγάζει. Ουδέποτε μια γυναίκα επήρε το πουκάμισο του συζύγου ή το χειρομάντηλό της να πάει να το ξεβγάλει, εφόσον δεν το σαπούνισε πρώτα. Θα το σαπουνίσει πρώτα και θα το ξεβγάλει έπειτα. Αυτό είναι. Πράγμα το οποίο ορισμένοι δεν το προσέχουν. Άνθρωποι οι οποίοι δεν εκκλησιάζονται, άνθρωποι που βλαστημούν, άνθρωποι που δεν κάνουν παιδιά, άνθρωποι που δεν νηστεύουν, άνθρωποι που δεν έχουν αγαθάς σκέψεις, προσέρχονται σήμερα για τα χρόνια πολλά. Κάνουν ζημιά. «Πολλοὶ ἀποθνήσκουσι καὶ ἱκανοί». Προς τι οι καρκίνοι, προς τι τόσες ανίατες ασθένειες, προς τι τόσοι σεισμοί, λιμοί και πόλεμοι κ.λπ.; Γιατί;

Σήμερα. Σήμερα λέγονται τέτοια πράγματα για τις μανάδες; Μακαρίζονται οι μανάδες σήμερα; Ή ακούμε και λένε: «Ανάθεμα τη μάνα που σε γέννησε, που μου πήρες τον πατέρα των παιδιών μου, που μου πήρες τη μητέρα των παιδιών μου. Ανάθεμα τη μάνα που σε γέννησε». Γιατί;
