Summary

The speaker explains that his lectures resumed late because Greek Orthodox communities in North America urgently needed sustained preaching and pastoral support. Turning to the feast of Saint James the Brother of the Lord, he distinguishes him from James the son of Zebedee and James the son of Alphaeus and defends the Theotokos’s perpetual virginity. Drawing from the Epistle of James, the speaker teaches that spiritual maturity is revealed especially through careful control of the tongue, readiness to listen, and slowness to speak.

You know, we had to delay resuming our meetings, which we had suspended for the summer, because we found ourselves abroad, where there is need as well.

Some people misunderstood us because of this and wondered why we had not begun sooner—though, of course, they were thinking only of themselves.

Paul says that a person, and above all a Christian, should not look only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others, and often make sacrifices for them. I want you to understand that here we have the word of God in abundance. Yet our deeds do not correspond to all that we have heard over so many years. Therefore, it shall be taken from you. Therefore, we shall turn to the nations. And this will be a blessing from God for both them and us. For unless we experience deprivation, we cannot be brought into conformity.

At the same time, they will be benefited. There, you speak to a hundred people, for example, and ninety-nine listen. Here, you speak to a hundred people, and two listen. The rest remain as they were. This could be confirmed if someone were to record the confessions of two or three people. They would see that they always confess the same things. Therefore, there is no progress. No one can imagine what is happening abroad unless he goes and experiences it firsthand. Those people are in danger on every side. They left here to earn their daily bread there, and found themselves defenseless—without faith, without any foundation, without anything at all.

And they found themselves facing well-organized religious groups. If you turn on the radio or television at any hour of the day or night, you will hear talks attacking Orthodoxy. It is brainwashing. It is a wonder that they hold on at all, and that churches still exist which, at least on Sundays when services are held, are packed full, because the people work every other day. The women work there too; they do not sit around doing their nails. Even those who have prospered still work. At least on Sundays, when people can meet, what happens there is deeply moving. This is apart from all those whom the wolf has devoured: some have become Protestants because they left here without knowing their faith and, as I told you, without even a basic foundation; others have become Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Yet they are eager to listen, especially to hear about our Tradition. They hear about the Bible and Holy Scripture every day from all the Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Jehovah’s Witness programs. Across the whole region of the United States and Canada, six hundred programs are broadcast every day. You can understand what is happening. Their arguments are covered with a great deal of sweet frosting, and you have to be very alert in order to refute them and give an enlightening answer to each group. You can understand how necessary it is for someone to remain there every day, with the radio on, listening to the slogans put out by the Protestants, the Roman Catholics, and the Jehovah’s Witnesses, so that he can refute them. That is why we gave a talk there morning and evening, in addition to our radio talks.

I gave so many talks there—during approximately five days in Montreal and fifteen days in Toronto. It should be noted that Montreal has eighty thousand Greeks, while Toronto has ninety thousand. And distances equal to the entire greater Athens area make up only one small section of the city there. You can imagine how difficult it is for these people to gather. And yet, tired from work in the evening, they would first come to the sermon and only afterward go home. The scenes were deeply moving. Whenever I speak about them, I cannot hold back my tears. What we read in the Acts of the Apostles as having taken place in

the early Church is being repeated today. This is why I am deeply concerned. Of course, I do not know; the Lord is the Master who gives the work, not I. I am merely an instrument, if I may put it that way, of His longsuffering. We are being called to leave Greece, if it were possible, and settle permanently in those countries. They are waiting in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Vancouver, Calgary—there is hardly a place where they are not waiting. And they do not want someone to speak for merely ten or twenty days, but for whole months. The people hang upon every word like grapes on the vine, searching for something firm to hold on to, because they have nothing there. If illness strikes, where can they turn?

If sorrow comes, where can they find spiritual help? Where can they go? Can they run to the Holy Mountain, to Saint Nektarios of Aegina, or to the Most Holy Theotokos of Tinos? Where can those people go? We managed to give each of them a small cross, and people nearly came to blows. We managed to give them a little piece of cotton blessed by our Most Holy Theotokos, and people almost fainted in the crush. They wanted something they could hold on to. Where are they to find support? And if we take a broader view of how God has ordered these things in His plan, then regardless of the fact that they went there for money and abandoned their faith here, one day Christ will make use of them, just as He made use of Joseph. Though his brothers sold him, he afterward became the one who supplied them with grain. And when he wished to comfort them, he said:

“Do not be distressed. You sold me, but God gave His consent, and so you sold me and I came to Egypt in order to prepare the way for you, so that you would not die.” Such, then, is God’s plan. We do not know what role our minority there will play. There are approximately one and a half million Greeks throughout the United States and Canada. And every day we see that, despite the difficulties, they are advancing. They are buying new churches. You now see Byzantine icon screens there. This is so despite the disgrace surrounding certain things we hear about, and so forth. They are heavily assailed by Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Every street corner is occupied, and their doors are knocked on at the most unlikely hours. You are obliged to know certain things so that you can respond, if you wish to be saved.

What is also moving is that, in a congregation of fifteen hundred, perhaps only ten or fifteen are elderly. All the rest are Greece’s young people. All that was rotten remained here; all the young people are over there. You see vigor and life. You see very young married couples arriving with one, two, three, four, or five children, in their car, and so forth. Among the thousand or fifteen hundred people I counted and saw there in the Church, perhaps fifty were elderly. Evidently, some were parents who had not gone there to settle, but were visiting and happened to come to Church. A large proportion of them certainly would not have gone to Church in their own villages. Yet over there, I do not know how, they gather closely

around the Church. And clearly the Orthodox Church will once again play a great role in humanity after the great slaughter that we are already bringing about with our own hands because of our sins. It will play a great role. The Holy Mountain is becoming a reserve of spiritual lifeblood. Unbelief and atheism expected to bury it within a few years. Yet the Holy Mountain is not being buried; it is being filled with men, and not by chance. The Most Holy Theotokos does not labor in vain; she works in earnest, however little we may understand these things. In much the same way, those people abroad will become centers of spiritual life, like the Jews who, scattered throughout humanity, played a great role in spreading Christianity.

We see how Paul made use of this: he always went to the synagogues, found the Jews there, and through them stirred the whole remaining mass. This is precisely what will happen with the Greeks this time—with the new Israel. So, as I say, what is happening abroad is deeply moving. Let us pray for those Greeks. They are the blood of Greece, regardless of the fact that they now live there, and regardless of the fact that they went without understanding why. Yet Christ makes use of them and preserves them in certain mysterious ways. You know, we Greeks are divided everywhere, and those divisions exist there too. There are disputes over calendars and political parties—PASOK and all the rest. Unhappy people! You came all the way here and brought your political and religious passions with you. Yet there are also invisible hands behind these divisions, and this is precisely why we are in our present condition. If we were united,

as the Jews are, and as all the other Protestants are—they do not accuse one another—then things would be different. Such things happen only among us Orthodox Christians, because we possess the truth and are therefore assailed by Satan, and this is why we suffer these troubles. We would be a very powerful force and a great cause of alarm—not to these groups alone, but to many people. In any case, I wanted to explain what kept us there. To remain away from home for forty days is a serious matter; it is not something trivial. Let people say what they will; they do not know how God acts. I had no work of my own there, just as I had none here. Yet I found work both here and there, and I do not know where else I may still find it. Christ, not men, carries out the work of human salvation. People are simply instruments of God’s providence. He is the One who presses the buttons; He is the One who makes the connections;

He is the One who plugs in the cables and joins people together, especially those who entrust themselves to Him, so that He may take them, as though lifeless in His hands, from this world into the next—which I pray may be yours. I thought I should say a few words, since everyone would want to hear something. What I want you to retain from this introductory part of my talk is that you should pray for these people. Pray for Orthodox Christians everywhere, because Orthodoxy is the salt of the world. A Christian is one who shows mercy even to the unbeliever, the atheist, and the robber. For the sake of the Orthodox Christian, humanity receives mercy—wayward humanity, indifferent humanity. It receives mercy for the sake of the Orthodox Christian, and especially through the Church, through the Mysteries, and above all through the clergy, whether a clergyman is good or bad. That is his responsibility; it is not ours.

This is precisely the point: if a man like Paul asked for people’s prayers, consider how necessary it is for us, out of love, to pray for these unknown people who live amid so many temptations, so that they may preserve Orthodoxy and thus keep a lamp burning there until the moment comes—and it will come very soon—for its flame to be passed throughout the world, to the billions who do not understand what this is about and who even worship cows and snakes. Many people speak about the end of the world. One well-read man said to me, “We still have time, Mr. Panagopoulos.” “What do you mean, Mr. Nikos? How much time do we have before the Second Coming?” “Well,” he said, “events concerning the nations will take place at the end, and then it will all be over, but

we still have time.” “How do you know that?” “Has the Gospel been spread?” he replied. “The Gospel has not been preached; so many people do not know it.” Let Christ take television into His hands, and I will show you how quickly the Gospel can spread: in a single evening. Let the Church use television—television! The Chinese will learn, the Indians will learn, Black people, Yellow people, Green people—everyone will learn. Let them shut down the corrupt programs and begin preaching the Gospel. Within a week, all who wish to become Christians will do so. There is no need for so many people to be physically present in India now; there is no need. We have a satellite above our heads, as they call it. Does that not make an impression on you? You pick up the telephone and call Madagascar as though you were speaking to the next room. This is especially so for us Greeks, because there is a satellite overhead. But

there is no need now for missionaries to spend weeks traveling there to preach. They will simply go afterward to give catechesis, baptize, and carry out the rest. The work itself will be done through the countless means with which God has illumined science—though science has taken them as though in betrayal and uses them against humanity. With one change of direction, the Gospel could be given to the world within a few years. Therefore, we do not know what is happening. None of us knows whether we have even another minute to live, and it is absurd for each of us to say that we have time. More broadly, however, events will unfold very quickly, as Isaiah says: “You will sow in front, and immediately reap behind.” This is what I meant: today dark powers use these things for humanity’s destruction. But tomorrow, if these same things are used for good, people will be enlightened

within a few days—not years, but a few days. Therefore, those of you who live to see it will witness astonishing things. How long it will be, I do not know. In any case, from the day Christ came into the world, only two days have passed for Christ. Christ is not in a hurry, nor does He seize people in the very act. He is longsuffering and waits for their salvation. Two days. “A thousand years in Your sight, O Lord, are like yesterday when it is past.”

One day is as a thousand years; therefore, the two thousand years that have passed are only two days for Christ. And as you understand, God does not need to go to work, nor does He depend upon the passing of summer or winter. But woe to us if we fail to make good use of His longsuffering and loving-kindness. In any case, that is what I wished to say in answer to the question of why the beginning of these talks was delayed. Now, then.

I thought I would use the rest of our time to speak about today’s feast. You know that today our Church celebrated Saint James, called the Brother of the Lord, the first bishop of Jerusalem. This too is important and has much to teach us. Out of a thousand Christians—not a hundred, but a thousand—perhaps one has read, if indeed even one has, the life of that first hierarch, the hierarch who was ordained by Christ Himself. As far as I know, this was granted to no other man. His Epistle is a General Epistle: it includes us as well. It is not addressed to one particular community, as are the Epistles to the Corinthians or the Romans. Yet his General Epistle remains unknown to many. For if people knew the Epistle of James, read it, and desired to put it into practice,

you would already be in Paradise. Only one small event would remain: the shell would be left below, and the little bird would fly upward to its proper place. Yet the Epistle remains obscure. People do not know it. The various heretics take one or two passages—one that speaks about confession, and another that says that if someone helps a person turn back from error, he “will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.” Apart from these two passages, everything else remains in darkness. So I would like to share with you a few things from my notes about this man. I ask you: as Orthodox Christians, do we know where James the Brother of the Lord came from? Do we know who this James is? How many men named James appear in the Gospel account? Most people do not know.

They are not interested. If it concerns fashion, yes; if it is some remedy for corns, yes; if it concerns anything else, yes. But if it concerns the soul, there is no discussion. Why were these things written? So that paper merchants could sell paper? Why were they written? “These things were written,” it says, “that you may believe”—that you may read them and believe. But we do not read them. Why such hostility toward Holy Scripture? Why such hostility toward God’s letter? If the letter came from your girlfriend or your boyfriend, if it spoke about money, the flesh, fashion, or travel, you would read it, read it again, and go on reading it—and so would I. Is that not so? But this letter you do not read, do you? In any case, I want you to know that three men named James appear in the account. The first is John’s brother: John and James,

the sons of Zebedee. He is not the author we are speaking about, nor the one whose feast is celebrated today. The second James is the son of Alphaeus. Both the first and the second James belong to the Twelve Apostles. The third James is not one of the Twelve Apostles. He is the Brother of the Lord and is called the Lord’s brother. You know that four boys, and perhaps several girls, are named as brothers and sisters of our Christ. The various Protestants constantly repeat this to us, claiming that the Most Holy Theotokos had other children, and so forth. The four men are named James, Joses, Simon, and Judas.

These children are alleged to have been children of the Most Holy Theotokos. Now this James is one of them. He is neither the son of Alphaeus nor the brother of John. The James called the Brother of the Lord—the author of the Epistle, whose feast is celebrated today, and who became the first bishop of Jerusalem—is one of those four children

who were regarded as brothers of the Lord. They were either the children of Cleopas, the brother of Joseph, or children of Joseph by another wife. I want you to know that those who say they were Joseph’s children by another wife have nothing in Holy Scripture to present in support of this. Those who say they were the children of Cleopas have historical testimony stating that they were the children of Cleopas, Joseph’s brother.

Joseph had cared for these children from the time they were young because Cleopas had passed away. One of them, then, was this James, who wrote the General Epistle, as I have told you, and whose feast is celebrated today. For example, Mark 15:40 says: “There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses.” James the Less—there is a distinction here. This James was called the Less, in contrast to James the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He, then, is one...

of these brothers: Joses, Simon, Judas, and James. Because he was one of these four children, he is called the Brother of the Lord. Tradition also relates the following: when Joseph wished to give each child his inheritance, the other three brothers—we know nothing about the girls—did not wish to give Christ a share, since they regarded Him as the youngest. For Jesus, the young Jesus, was also in their household through the Most Holy Theotokos, whom Joseph had taken as his wife, though only outwardly so. James alone was willing to divide his own portion and give a share

from what belonged to him. He argued on His behalf: “You keep what belongs to you; from my own portion I will give a share to the young Jesus.” James the Less was the youngest of the four children. He gave a portion to the young Jesus and therefore regarded Him as his brother. From this, the title was extended to him, and he came to be called the Brother of the Lord. This James is also said to be the young man mentioned in Mark 14:51: on the night of the betrayal, out in the fields, a young man escaped naked, leaving his linen cloth behind. It is said that James was that young man who fled naked.

In Matthew 13:55, as we see, these men are named as brothers, as I have told you, and for this reason James is presented as the Brother of the Lord. He is not the son of Alphaeus or the son of Zebedee. He is one of the four children who were called brothers of the Lord. Although they were not brothers in the strict sense, they were nevertheless called brothers. We should also know that this Brother of the Lord was sanctified from his mother’s womb. He never ate meat in his life. He never drank wine, raki, cognac, or any other strong or intoxicating drink. This abstinence was characteristic of the Nazirites—the consecrated ones, whom we might compare to monks. He never shaved in his life. He never anointed himself with perfume or myrrh.

He never bathed in a public bath and never wore sandals. He was always barefoot and was called “the Barefoot.” He also always wore white garments. Because of him, the bishops of Jerusalem who came immediately after him all wore white, following the first hierarch, who had worn white. He was called Oblias, which means “the righteous.” He foretold that a priest named Anastasios would one day become Patriarch of Jerusalem, and so it happened. He remained a virgin throughout his entire life.

He was a virgin. Because of his constant kneeling—he would enter the Holy of Holies and pray—his knees became hard like a camel’s. His forehead, too, had become darkened and swollen from striking the ground in prostration. Wherever he passed, young and old alike kissed his garments, his clothes, and their fringes. It is said that the Lord Himself ordained him. Epiphanios also says that Peter, James, and John elected him as the first bishop of Jerusalem. He served as bishop for twenty-nine years.

Finally, during a Jewish Passover, they summoned him to give an account of his faith in Christ. After taking him up to the pinnacle of the Temple, he said from there: “Why do you question me about Jesus, the Son of Man? He sits at the right hand of Almighty God, and He will come with the clouds of heaven to execute judgment and give to each his due.” That was the answer he gave after they had taken him up there. When the Jews heard these words, they violently cast him down, stoned him, and said, “Even the righteous one has gone astray.” Then a fuller—a man who dyed cloth—took the wooden club with which he...

stirred the cloth in the dyed water so that it would absorb the color more thoroughly, and struck James on the head, splitting it open. To this day, the place of his martyrdom and burial still exists. It belongs to the Armenians and lies within the Armenian Patriarchate. In earlier years, for financial reasons, the place was sold. Although it was Orthodox and is connected with many other Orthodox events, the Armenians bought it and retained possession of it afterward. John Chrysostom writes that all the brothers of James were called the Desposyni, meaning the relatives of the Lord. James was also the one who composed a liturgy—the first Divine Liturgy, as we were saying—

which remained in use in our Church for many years, until Basil the Great appeared and, so to speak, shortened it. Since it required six or seven hours, he reduced it to four.

The same thing was later done to Basil’s Divine Liturgy by John Chrysostom, who shortened the Divine Liturgy of Basil the Great and reduced it, as you know, to three hours. Saint James is a very important Saint in our Church, yet he remains largely unknown. Those who are able and willing celebrate the Divine Liturgy of Saint James on this day. It is a Divine Liturgy at which there is no antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy. Only then does a person feel the absence: after remaining there for two, three, four, or five hours, in the end he is not given even antidoron. For the purpose of attending the Divine Liturgy is not to receive antidoron, but to receive the Gift itself—Holy Communion. The people leave without antidoron, and many who expect it do not understand or pay attention. The deacon must come out and explain that it is time to depart: “He dismisses us in peace; depart in peace. Nothing else will be given to us. We distributed it earlier; you did not come to receive it.” The Divine Liturgy exists for Holy Communion, not for antidoron—for us to take the antidoron, eat it, and scatter the crumbs over our bald heads so that they fall to the ground. Then a person will understand what harm he does and how inconsistent he is when he goes to Church without being prepared to receive Holy Communion. In any case, I thought it appropriate to place these things first

as we speak today about this honored person. Now, if we wished to consider his teaching more broadly and draw several lessons from it, we could dwell on the matters he mentions. In the second and third chapters of his Epistle, he gives a beautiful lesson about who may be called a Christian and who may be called a perfect man. He says: “The perfect man is the one who does not stumble in what he says.” It is not merely the man who does not kill because he is afraid of the prosecutor. Nor is it the man who does not steal because he cannot climb over fences. It is the man who watches his little tongue, who holds it back and bites it. That is the man. But someone may ask, “Is the matter of the tongue really so serious?” Quite simply,

I will give you two verses. The first is taken from the first chapter of his Epistle, verse 19 and following. He says: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear and slow to speak.” Listen quickly, but answer slowly. Do not let your tongue answer at once. Many times afterward we repent, humble ourselves, and ask forgiveness. Why bring such disgrace upon the whole matter? Why are you not careful? Why do you not, as the saying goes, swallow your tongue? Why did God place it behind your teeth? Why do you not bite that tongue? The tongue is a precious thing, a great thing, a mystery—but everything depends on how it is used. Has anyone ever stopped to consider this?

If this tongue did not exist, what value would the whole creation connected with the belly have? None at all. Through the tongue, the sense of taste gives value to the entire material creation that Christ made for our sustenance. If I remove your sense of taste, what remains for you to experience, and for what are you to thank God? God has placed these tastes in this skin, this flesh—this little piece of tissue, one might say—which possesses so many abilities. At some point you may find yourself before ten or twenty bottles containing different substances, and you may want to discover what each one contains. You would have to take them to a chemist and say, “I would like you to tell me what is in each of these.” After counting the bottles, he would tell you, “Come back in a week for the answer.” But you...

taste what is in each bottle and say: “Ah, this is bitter; this is astringent; this is sour; this is sweet; this is salty.” The answer comes at once. What, then, are you? What am I? Ask the One who made me what I am. He gave you this tongue, yet you do not understand what it is. He did not give it to you merely so that you might blaspheme Him. He did not give it to you so that you might destroy your neighbors or corrupt the Christians around you. He gave it to you so that you might bless God. “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.” “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless His holy name.” The tongue was not given for blasphemy or accusation. It was not given for slander. It was given so that you might bless God, communicate with others, and speak with your God. Yet although it was given for these purposes, man misuses it. Saint James says: be careful to listen quickly and speak slowly. And a little farther on, he says: “If anyone thinks...”

“If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious,” he says, but “does not bridle his tongue”—does not put a bridle on his tongue, as they put a bridle on a horse, restraining and taming it and leading it wherever they wish, an image he explains more fully below—“but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.” His religion is vain. A person’s religion can be defiled by his tongue. And further on, in the third chapter, he speaks more extensively: “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things.” We stumble—not you stumble; we stumble. He included himself.

All of us—every one of us—stumble in many things. “If anyone does not stumble in word”—in word, not with his hand, not with his eye, not in the flesh, or in anything else—“if anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.” Then he gives examples: “See how we put bits into horses’ mouths so that they may obey us.” We put in the bridle, he says, to restrain the tongues of the animals, the horses, and guide them. “And we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: though they are so large and driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.”

A whole ocean liner has such a tiny board at the stern for its rudder, yet according to the way that board is turned, it steers that entire ocean liner. He compares this to the tongue: what the tongue is capable of doing and where it is capable of leading us. For you know that if this tiny rudder is not used for good—to keep the ship safe from the waves

and steer it away from the currents—the ship will run onto the rocks and be shattered, or strike the reefs beneath the sea. “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” Look, he says, at this little thing, this tiny tongue. It can start a fire; it can divide families, divide communities, divide everything.

Be especially watchful concerning the tongue. Further on he says: “Every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.” Man tames the wild beasts, he says: lions, hyenas, crocodiles, basilisks—everything. But his own tongue, he says, he cannot tame. “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” Deadly poison comes forth from this tongue. “With it we bless God and the Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God.” With this tongue we say, “Our Father,” and “My dear God,” and so forth; yet with the same tongue we pour out our poison upon others.

“Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” This cannot be; it must not happen, he says. “Does a spring send forth both fresh and bitter water from the same opening?” Can bitter and sweet water flow from the same fountain? How, then, do you manage to have your tongue pour out poison at one moment and cry, “Oh, Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” the next? How can this be? “Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring can yield both salt water and fresh.” And yet there are people who do not watch their tongue as carefully as they should. The tongue is a great thing. Saint Gregory the Theologian says the following about the way the tongue is used:

“How sweet it is for people to condemn the affairs of others.” From morning until evening the tongue discusses other people’s business. There is nothing sweeter for a person, he says, than to use his tongue for such talk, although it was given to him to bless God and to reflect upon his own concerns—his personal life, his soul, his family, and the world more generally. Instead, he talks endlessly about this and that, condemning governments, Churches, public figures, individuals, neighbors, parents, all manner of things and supposed wonders—everything except himself. Yet Christ has said that among the means and criteria He will use in judgment is the tongue: “By your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” That is written in the twelfth chapter of Matthew. What is sorrowful and wrong—indeed, if you will permit me to say so, immoral and dishonorable—

is to speak against someone who is absent. That is extremely base. Then, if you are unexpectedly caught or the matter is later revealed, you say, “Me? Never in my life! I said that about you?” On top of it all, you tell countless lies, swear a thousand oaths, and kiss the Gospel book while swearing. Why? To cover yourself in a situation that cannot be covered. This is why David said from the beginning, in Psalm 100, verse 5: “Whoever secretly slandered his neighbor, him I drove away.” Saint Basil the Great, interpreting the matter of the tongue and speaking about backbiting, says: “Backbiting is speaking against an absent brother with the intention of defaming him, even if what is said is true.”

The purpose of someone who speaks behind another person’s back is not to help him, but to speak evil of him. Of course, some people say, “Yes, we discuss these things, but we do not tell lies; we tell the truth.” If you were telling lies, you would be a slanderer. As it is, you are a backbiter. You would be a slanderer if what you said were false.

Do you imagine that you are free to speak about true things while accusing someone? “You know, I saw him myself. I was there. I know it; I know it myself.” And who asked you to say it? What compels you to say it? It is the twisted inclination within you that enjoys talking about such things, while the other person enjoys listening and wants to hear more. Do you see? “Even if what is said is true.” Even if it is true, it remains backbiting and nothing else. Do you understand how serious this matter is?

It is not only those who speak evil who are guilty, but also those who give them the opportunity and make it easy for them. “Wait, let me tell you something.” “About whom?” “Let me tell you something about the man from Preveza.” “I do not want you to tell me anything.” “Let me tell you something about the neighbor.” “I do not want you to tell me anything.” “Let me tell you something about Seraphim.” “I do not want you to tell me anything. I will not sit here listening to you. Go and talk to the trees; go and talk to the mice.” When I strain my ear to listen, take it all in, and even add my own comments, what am I doing? I am making it easier for him. Listen, then, to what Saint Basil the Great says. These are not my own words: “Not only those who speak evil, but also those who give them occasion to do so, are equally liable to the punishment appointed for such accusation.” Just as that person will be punished, so will you, because you sit listening and give him the opportunity to pour out

all the filth he has inside. You should ask him, “Have you nothing better to tell me? What are you—a fly that runs wherever there is filth, gathers it all up, and then writes it down or brings it to me?” You are not playing a good part in this; you are not acting rightly. The divine Chrysostom says, “It is better!”

“It is better to drink wine and eat meat on a fast day than to devour the flesh of your brethren with your tongue.” It would be preferable, he says, to eat meat and fish on Great and Holy Friday than to devour people with your tongue.

“If anyone is found backbiting another, or listening to a backbiter without rebuking him, let him be excommunicated together with him.” You will be excommunicated along with the person who says such things. If you do not rebuke him and tell him to be quiet and stop, you too are guilty. But once you have heard it, bury it. Your spiritual father heard your Holy Confession, but he buried it. He did not go out into the marketplace and repeat it. He did not telephone your husband, your wife, your father, or your children. He did no such thing. Bury it. This is why the Wisdom of Sirach says in chapter 19, verse 16: “Have you heard a word? Let it die with you. Tell it neither to friend nor foe.”

“Let me tell you. I am telling no one else, because I do not know what might happen, but I trust you.” “Tell it neither to friend nor foe.” You heard it? Bury it.

Keep it to yourself. If we acted in this way, all those stories that circulate, scandalizing people, sometimes teaching them new sins and even causing them to lose their souls, would be restrained to some degree.

We hear someone say, “We have not seen each other for ages. I have so much to tell you—you would not believe it! I will come over one day so that we can talk.” What will you talk about? Your own filth and the filth of your children? What will you discuss—things from your youth, things happening now, or other schemes? What will you say? You will talk about other people, will you not? And you open your house and invite such swallows inside, so that they may come and foul your home.

Those who come to tell you things and carry tales to you are bringing you droppings and making your house filthy. Yet you would not permit that. You drive such swallows and flies outside. So why do you invite this woman or that man—this wasp—into your house to talk?

Saint John Chrysostom—forgive me, Saint Augustine—used to say, and had these words written on the plaster in the entrance hall of his house: “Brother, if you have come here to devour the flesh of your absent brother, there is no place for you here.” If you have come here, he says, to devour the flesh of someone who is absent, you have no place in this house. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says: “Do not receive swallows into your homes—that is, talkative people and those who cannot control their tongues. Do not share your roof with them.” Do not bring such people into your home. Many times we are not without blame: they steal our time, our food burns, our husband comes home and scolds us, and someone else is kept from his work. We lose out in all these ways as well.

It is not only that we lose our souls; we also suffer practical harm. They begin chattering endlessly, then accusing others, telling lies, and boasting about their exploits and achievements. And this little tongue, which should be saying, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us sinners,” has no time to say such things. Proverbs rightly says, “In a multitude of words you will not escape sin.” When a person talks on and on for a long time, he will eventually tell lies as well. There are not enough true things to fill all those hours, so he will lie, and tomorrow he will have to give an account to God. His tongue becomes an instrument of Satan. But whether a lie is told for a good purpose or an evil one, it does not cease to be a lie. It requires a canon, a rule of prayer, and must be confessed.

Therefore, the tongue must remain clean, so that in the evening you may say the Our Father, or “Glory to You, O God,” or, in some difficult situation, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me.” Saint Cyril of Jerusalem spoke about the evils caused by a wicked tongue. Listen to what he says: “The serpent is said to be fearsome because the sting is in its tongue.” The snake, he says, carries its venom beneath its tongue. “But nothing is more fearsome than a wicked human tongue.” Yet the venom of a serpent—whether a basilisk, a viper, or some other snake—is not, he says, as fearsome or as evil as the tongue of a human viper. It is not as terrible. There is also a serpent called the green lizard, which...

It strikes—and down you go. It bites you and kills you at once. “But nothing is more venomous than the tongue of...” the chatterer, the person whose stream of words never ends. “The sting of a scorpion can be healed, but an evil word issuing from the mouth of a chatterer strikes his neighbor.” If a scorpion stings you, he says, you apply ammonia and the pain will pass. But when a person’s tongue is like a scorpion, the wound cannot be healed. “A flame of fire is extinguished with water, but no one can subdue an evil tongue. A bridle tames a stiff-necked horse, but no one can tame an evil tongue. A wild beast is easily made gentle, but the tongue cannot be subdued. Nothing in the world is worse than an evil tongue. It sets city against city, household against household, children against parents, and brother against brother.”

Such evils come through the tongue. And yet we do not watch our tongue, though even the place where the Creator set it should make us reflect and ask why He placed it there and what He meant thereby to prevent. But there is something more. When a person does not use his tongue for good, does he ever consider that his soul is becoming leprous? As long as his tongue speaks accusations, slanders, insults, or whatever else it may do, giving harmful counsel, at the same time it is piling up...

Like snow upon snow, it is piling leprosy upon the soul. Have you ever read in Numbers, chapter twelve, what happened in Moses’ family among those three siblings—Aaron, Miriam, and Moses? Read the twelfth chapter of Numbers in the Old Testament. Aaron the high priest sat with his sister Miriam, and together they spoke maliciously about Moses because he had married an Ethiopian woman and had not consulted them. They accused both Moses and his wife. And while they were speaking against them, Miriam became white with leprosy from head to foot. They were terrified. They understood at once that it was because of this malicious talk...

Against Moses and his wife that Miriam had become leprous. They immediately fell down before Moses, asked his forgiveness, and begged him to pray to God that Miriam might be delivered from the leprosy. Moses, a simple man, prayed to God to free her from it. “I forgive her,” he said. “Lord, forgive her as well.” For when a person sins, whether with the tongue, the flesh, or any other sense, he sins in two directions. He sins against God, who said, “Do not do this,” and he also sins against the person he has harmed. He may slander him, rob him, dishonor him, or harm him in some other way. In any case, God said:

“Miriam will be judged; she will serve her canon of penance and remain leprous. According to the Law, she must go outside the camp. She will remain outside for a week to fulfill her canon, and then she will be healed.” So Miriam went outside the camp. Read about these things in Leviticus, chapters thirteen and fourteen, and see how lepers were sent outside; they were types of sin. And remember that our Christ met ten lepers outside, and there He healed them. Only one returned to thank Him. Where were the other nine? Such is ungrateful humanity. In any case, Miriam became leprous because of her tongue. If Christ allowed us today, every time we opened our mouths, to see a clump of leprosy fall upon us, I assure you that neither you nor I would readily open our mouths again.

I would like us to notice that Aaron did not become leprous. They were involved together: so to speak, one was listening while the other was speaking. Yet Aaron did not become leprous. Why, then, did Aaron not become leprous? Aaron was a high priest, and Holy Orders do not become leprous. This is a serious and eternal lesson. We may beat the ground and cry out as much as we like; we may have before us the most sinful and immoral priest in the world. Do not lay hold of this matter, or you will be burned. Holy Orders do not become leprous. That man, as a human being, may be condemned to Hell, but he does not cease to be a high priest; he does not cease to be a priest; he does not cease to be a deacon; he does not cease to possess grace. Holy Orders do not become leprous. This is what the passage teaches us. As you know, these subjects cannot be exhausted, so let us stop here, though I also wanted to touch upon two other matters:

“Confess your trespasses to one another,” a passage that some people distort; and the other passage, which says that whoever saves a person by turning him back from error will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. But perhaps we shall be granted another opportunity to speak about these things. I pray that His grace may be with the whole world and with us. Amen.

πρώτη Εκκλησία, αυτά επαναλαμβάνονται και σήμερα. Γι' αυτό προβληματίζομαι. Δεν ξέρω βέβαια· εργοδότης είναι ο Κύριος, δεν είμαι εγώ. Εγώ είμαι απλός εκτελεστής, αν μπορώ να πω, της μακροθυμίας Του. Καλούμεθα να φύγουμε από την Ελλάδα, αν ήταν δυνατόν, και να φύγουμε μόνιμα για τις χώρες αυτές. Περιμένουν στη Νέα Υόρκη, περιμένουν στο Σικάγο, περιμένουν στη Φιλαδέλφεια, περιμένουν στη Βοστώνη, περιμένουν στο Βανκούβερ, περιμένουν στο Κάλγκαρι, περιμένουν και πού δεν περιμένουν. Και όχι για 10 και για 20 ημέρες· μήνες ολόκληρους να ομιλείς. Σαν σταφύλι κρέμεται ο κόσμος και ζητάνε πού να στερεωθούν, γιατί δεν έχουν τίποτα εκεί. Αρρώστια βρούνε, πού να τρέξουνε;

σας μεταφέρω δύο εδάφια. Το ένα είναι παρμένο από το πρώτο κεφάλαιό του, στίχος 19 και κατωτέρω. Λέγει: «Ώστε, αδελφοί μου αγαπητοί, έστω πας άνθρωπος ταχύς εις το ακούσαι, βραδύς δε εις το λαλήσαι». Να ακούς γρήγορα, αλλά να απαντάς αργά. Μην αφήνεις τη γλώσσα σου να απαντήσει. Πολλές φορές μετανοούμε και ταπεινωνόμεθα και ζητάμε συγγνώμη. Γιατί να ξεφτελίζεις αυτό το θέμα; Γιατί δεν προσέχεις; Γιατί δεν την καταπίνεις, κατά το λεγόμενο, τη γλώσσα σου; Γιατί σου την έβαλε από μέσα από τα δόντια; Γιατί δεν τη δαγκώνεις αυτή τη γλώσσα; Τίμιο πράγμα η γλώσσα, μεγάλο πράγμα η γλώσσα, μυστήριο η γλώσσα, αλλά εξαρτάται από τη χρήση. Έχει σκεφθεί κανείς;

Αυτοί που έρχονται να πούνε, να σου μεταφέρουν, κουτσουλιά σου μεταφέρουν και σου λερώνουν το σπίτι. Δεν το κάνεις, όμως. Τα χελιδόνια αυτά, τις μύγες, τις βγάζεις έξω. Πώς αυτή την κυρία, αυτόν τον κύριο, αυτή η σφήκα, την καλείς στο σπίτι να μιλήσει;
