Summary
The homily opens by naming routine and habit toward divine things as one of the worst faults among Christians, since familiarity strips away the awe with which we ought to stand before God. Peace with God and peace with neighbor correspond to the Liturgy's two petitions and the two great commandments, and without them candles, oil, church buildings, and orphanages count for nothing toward the Kingdom. Expounding the prayer 'O Heavenly King,' the speaker argues that awareness of the Spirit's omnipresence would restrain sin, that the Spirit intercedes with unutterable groanings for the soul's true benefit while we pray only for material things, and that the Trinity remains a mystery which heretics and Jehovah's Witnesses reject.

…one of the very bad habits that unfortunately exist among us Christians is what we call routine. In many things a person can and should get used to what he does; but there is one thing he must never get used to. He must never grow accustomed to divine things, never become casually familiar with them, because once that happens he is no longer edified, no matter what effort he makes. What is divine is always divine.
It must always stand in a place of eminence within our conscience, and we must always stand before it with awe. That is, if we want to be edified and not harmed.
So habit has deceived us, and we pay no attention to certain basic matters and basic lessons. A person does not need to know a great many things if he wants to be saved, if he really wants to succeed and to return to that longed-for homeland.
And that homeland is Paradise. If he attends to a few things and puts them into practice, and makes them the very experience of his life, then he has everything he needs to reach the goal he was made for while he is still here. A person's time on earth is short and uncertain. That is why he must always make good use of it. Let him never be fooled into thinking that tomorrow belongs to him; not even today belongs to him. So as long as the day lies before him, he must make good use of it. Is it necessary for a person to know every book of the Church? If he is able to know them, that is a good thing; but if he cannot, he can confine himself to certain basic matters and take care to apply them. Because it is not enough for a person to worship his God in his own way; he must worship Him as God wants.
This should always occupy him, and he should be asking himself: am I doing what He wants, or am I doing what I suppose? Because we always walk by our own 'I suppose', not by God's 'I will'. Within Holy Scripture there are certain details, and if a person is willing to pore over them and apply them, he can be certain that one day he will arrive where the Lord Jesus Christ has gone as forerunner on our behalf, and where He is waiting for us. Today this opportunity was given to me, because along with you I too heard certain things — because of the day, and because of the saints whom the Church has brought to our remembrance, we who came here to venerate and to receive. And my conscience convicts me, and I say: my God, these five words You spoke to me today, am I applying them? Have I built anything out of them? Or do I simply want to bring a candle into Your church, to bring a little oil, a loaf of offering bread, and things like that? These things You call blessed today out of Your Gospel law — do I have anything to do with them? Have I put any of them into practice? Because the saints who are venerated today applied that whole series of Your Beatitudes. That is an examination of conscience, if only we pay attention. We do not pay attention. The dogmatic troparia are chanted. We know nothing about any of it.
The epistle reading is read out and it preaches; they read the epistle, the Gospel is read, the Gospel is proclaimed — but what do they say? Who are they speaking about? And do we have any obligation, are we one of those to whom the words are addressed? Because of habit, this bad disposition of habit has deceived us, and we never go deep into these matters, and one day we will stand face to face with God. Because of the feast of another holy relic, Saint John the Russian, who is commemorated today at Prokopi in Euboea, this beautiful Gospel from our Lord's Sermon on the Mount has been appointed — because this man fulfilled in every respect
the whole string of the Beatitudes. Has this ever concerned you? Do you read the Gospel? Do you read, let's say, the Acts of the Apostles and the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation? Do you read the Prophets? Be willing to read the fifth chapter of Matthew, and the sixth, and the seventh. Read the Sermon on the Mount of our Christ, and then sit down and apply it in your life as far as Christ allows you, and then you can be certain that you will obtain the promises. If these few words of these three chapters of the Gospel — which are the whole of the fine work that has to be done on the human soul — are not put into practice, then no churches, no chandeliers, no orphans fed, no widows sheltered,
no suffering people comforted in their tears — whatever else we may do, if we do not apply these things, the Kingdom of Heaven has nothing to do with us. 'Blessed are the poor in spirit.' Which of us is poor in spirit? Raise your hand. And who are the poor in spirit? Those who have a certain nakedness before God, those who mourn for their sins, because they grieved God. God was crucified for my sins and I go on sinning — that is the one who mourns. Not the one dressed in black; black is a fashion nowadays, that has nothing to do with it. The one who mourns is the one who mourns because God gave him time, brought him out of non-being into being, called him to become god by grace — that is, called him to theosis — and he did not become it, and worse, he despised the blood that was poured out in order to
bring him back and save him. 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.' Where else was such a thing ever heard, that the peacemaker will become a son of God? And why does He give them this title? Nowhere else did He say 'they shall be called', because He Himself is the great Peacemaker. And whoever resembles Him will himself be, by grace, a child of God. Have we made peace? Am I at peace with God? Am I at peace with my fellow men? Because there are two peaces: 'Again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord' — and it begins with the peace from above: 'In peace let us pray to the Lord', and 'Again and again in peace let us pray to the Lord.' A person lives in this struggle, that he must always be at peace with God
and with his neighbour. There are two commandments: you shall love the Lord your God, and your neighbour as yourself. Do we have anything to do with this? Am I at peace with God? 'But what is there between me and God? I don't know.' Or have you set up a partition again in between? That barrier existed in the Old Testament. Or rather, the sin that man had set up had separated him from God. Christ came, He opened the dividing wall, He was crucified, and He opened it — opened it so wide that even the greatest sinner can pass through. And yet we put this sin back in the middle again. When sin comes in between — whether in word, in deed, or in thought — you have been separated from God. There is no peace with God. And to make peace, you must admit it,
you must repent, you must go to Holy Confession, by the power of the One who gave His Holy Spirit after the Resurrection: 'Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven them; whose sins you retain, they are retained' — so that you may be cleansed and be at peace with God again. And make peace with your neighbour: a 'good morning', a kind word, instead of the courtroom, instead of the grudge and all the rest. And when these two peaces exist, then a person resembles Christ. But who cares about this? Who takes it up? Who else goes and makes himself a bridge, to reconcile a husband and wife, two friends, two neighbours, two people? Who takes that on? Who even lays out money of his own, many times over, so that two people can be reconciled over some small quarrel? Who does such a thing? Candles you light easily, with ten or twenty drachmas, with a coin — those things cost nothing, those things are painless.
But to go and ask forgiveness, and to say good morning to the other person who insulted you, who wronged you — that he will not do. You will not go to a man you consider a sinner and condemned. Then in what way do you resemble God? On what grounds can you say 'Our Father, who art in heaven', when you have no likeness to the Son? So if a person were willing to pay attention when he enters the Church, and not come to church out of habit, not come to church as a kind of pastime, not come to church for show, or to display his learning or his clothes and so on, then he would be greatly edified. My beloved, I did not come out here to do theology, only to remind you of the very thing that convicts my own conscience when we find ourselves in the Church of Christ, and especially at such moments and before such holy shrines. It is necessary…
my God, I beg You, wake me from this lethargy of habit. We are perishing, because everything is collapsing, and yet our Christ insists, through His Church, on reminding us of the truth that saves the world. Yes, a person always justifies himself; he always excuses himself and his own people, and those he sins with, and those he eats with, and those he revels with, and he hands out to each of them — and to himself and to the others — a certificate that he is all right. But that certificate will not pass up there. A person ought always to set himself the way he sets his watch by the observatory; that is how he must set the clock of his soul and of his nature —
by the observatory of Christ. The Church of Christ has great beacons, great luminaries, it has pole stars, so that people can take their bearings — not with reference to their life here in this world and their course through it, but with reference to their return to heaven. Every person believes something; the most unbelieving are in fact the most believing. There are no atheists in the world — never mind that they do not believe in the real God; they may have fashioned an idol of their own and believe in that. Some believe cows are God, others believe in the sun. There are no atheists. But the real God — who believes in Him? Who obeys Him? Who lives Him, so that from today he is registered in this world as a citizen of the other life? That is the question
that should occupy a person. Not: 'I'm fine, I go to church, I make the sign of the Cross' — and at the same time, on the way out of church, I'm discussing fashion. That is a habit, a bad habit; it deceives a person, and one day he will wake up. Something will shift beneath his feet, but it will be the last day — like the mole, who sees on his last day, but has nothing to gain from it. There are people who believe in their own way. Some believe in something higher, some believe in a higher power, some believe in God, some even believe in Christ. Not one of them is saved. Whoever believes in Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene — that is what is required. And whoever does what Jesus says — that is what is required. Just any Jesus does not save.
The Crucified One, the Nazarene, the One the angel spoke of: 'You seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen; He is not here.' That is the Jesus who comes to us — this religion, this faith, which has a Leader whose tomb is empty. We Orthodox above all have been shown mercy, because He has given us compasses, He has given us pole stars, He has left us this emptiness of the tomb so that we may believe in Him. All the founders of the so-called religious systems — not religions — lie fixed in their shrouds. Call him Buddha, call him Mohammed, call him Zoroaster, call him the Pope, call him Luther, call him Russell, call him whoever you like — he lies nailed in his shroud. Only Jesus, the Son of Mary, the Crucified, the Nazarene, the Head of the Orthodox Church, has an empty tomb. He is not here. The grave could not hold Him. He opened up death, God descended into the chambers of Hades, He pierced death through and set us free, and granted us eternal life and great mercy. And He has kept watch over us in various ways so that we may be helped. We are not called merely to believe blindly today; we are given knowledge as well. At this very moment, for instance, we stand before Saint Spyridon. Does that say nothing to you and nothing to me? Are people never brought to account for their faith?
It is a proof that our Christ does not accept just any faith. That not every road leads to heaven, but only one road. Does that not strike you? Does it not strike you that He has kept him here for sixteen hundred years, so that people may pass by and see and now, from knowledge itself, reconsider their faith? Is it not clear by now that God does not accept just any faith, or anything a person invents, or any opinion at all? And I insist on this, I would shed my blood for it: there is one truth, one religion, one faith. Does nothing stir in you in these days? Do you not feel the very ground of the faith going out from under your feet?
…that we should wake up the champions of Orthodoxy to stand beside us, so that we may be saved and may save others — because it is not only a question of our own salvation, but of saving others too, of helping those who have been deceived. 'I am not getting into your boat, because you are going to sink' — and tomorrow he will accuse me and say to me, 'Why did you not come in where I was, since I was not careful, and how were we to be saved one day?' We have a great obligation to Orthodoxy, a great obligation to Christianity, especially in these days, and above all when you stand before such holy shrines. Does it not strike you that along this whole ridge of the Ionian Islands, beginning from the peak at the top, from Corfu, all the way down to the far end of the chain, this line is a dividing line between two worlds?
Does it not strike you that He has set five lighthouses along it, so that people may see this dividing line? Do you know that there are two relics here? Do you know that there are two relics on Zakynthos? Do you know that there is another relic on Kefalonia? Why so many? He does this to help people — the people who are willing. A person passes through this earth once, and only once, and if he does not make good use of these years, that is the end of it. A person must understand that one day he will be evicted, because he is not the owner-occupier of the earth, he is a tenant on the earth. The great men speak about the 'inhabitants of the earth'; what inhabitant? Man is a tenant of the earth. He did not come to live in this world. He came to die, and he dies in order to live. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning of another life,
a life which has no end. And so this short time of our sojourning here ought to bring us to our senses — not to leave us in this bad habit, but to make us watchful, to make us search things out, and to make good use of the time we are given.
because tomorrow is not ours, today is ours -- and even today is not really ours. My beloved, there is no such thing as the present. There is a past and there is a future. Picture the present on an imaginary straight line: the present is the edge of a blade. Whatever I am saying is already in the past, and whatever I am about to say is still in the future. So who has promised us that in a fraction of a second we shall still be here, or that they shall still be here? That is why there is fear.
Today is not ours, not even this minute is ours. Just as our Christ hung suspended between heaven and earth to save us, so we too hang suspended between present, past and future -- we hang in the air, we hang in the air. Paul said, 'One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind, straining forward to what lies ahead.' He said nothing about a present. Is there a present? Tell me, where is the present? There is no present, and you hold nothing in your hand. Your past has gone from you, the future does not belong to you -- and yet you feel no need, you have no fear, there is no fear within you. No fear of this preparation, of this watchfulness, of going back over certain events of your life, or of making peace with God so that you can stand before Him on that day.
That is the fear. These are the things we must keep in mind, and we must always ask God, 'My God, we are close to You. You were crucified for me -- not because of who I am, but because I am Your own possession. I am the collateral of Your blood, which You have deposited in the bank of God's righteousness.' And for my part -- where do I stand, what am I at this moment? At the same time, when we find ourselves, as I said, standing before these great stars, we should put the question to them: why has He set you there? So that you may be guided, if you are willing; so that you may see that this is the road that leads to the Kingdom of Heaven. Not every faith saves, because the faiths that men invent and the religions that men invent have only Hell to offer. They have no Paradise.
Only the road of the Crucified One, the Nazarene. By His Cross and by His descent He quenched the power and the fire of that flaming sword which turned every way and had closed the road that leads to life, and by His Cross He opened it again. Only this road, only this faith, only this Person is the one who leads people rightly into Paradise. And so today I would like to remind myself of this, and to say a couple of words to all of us as well: take care, brothers and sisters. Let us stand aright, let us stand with fear, in the matters of our faith. Faith is the pupil of the eye; nothing at all can be allowed to touch it.
He drained the cup to the very bottom and poured out all His blood, down to the last drop, in order to set His seal on this truth and to give it to us. Surely it is not so hard for a person to be willing to set aside his own egotism and his own ambitions and to submit himself to Christ, who is the only guide, through these helpers of His, to carry us into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Today is, in a certain sense, the continuation of yesterday. It is closely bound up with the day of Pentecost. The Person who played the central role yesterday, the Holy Spirit who came down, is the very One whom we are celebrating today, and He is the One who gives us this opportunity
to celebrate. It is a joyful event, as joyful as the event of Pascha. For the Holy Spirit and our Lord Jesus Christ are of equal honour, and one could well imagine that we are keeping another Pascha. Our holy Church has framed this joyful event with a whole week of rejoicing, just as she framed Pascha with Bright Week, which was joyful from beginning to end. So from today until the Sunday of All Saints she keeps this too as a festal week, with no fasting at all -- abstinence only from sin. Even the Wednesdays and Fridays of this week are not days of mourning but days of joy; the fast is set aside.
And the Holy Spirit, to whom, along with God, we ought to be saying thank you again and again -- we do not say it as we should, because we know nothing about Him. Our Christians know about God, they know about our Lord Jesus Christ, about our Lady the Theotokos, about the saints -- but about the Paraclete, about the Holy Spirit, they know nothing. And yet He is the One who is present in the Church; He is the One who regenerates people from the very day of their baptism; He is the One who cleanses people from the sins they commit after baptism; He is the One who makes food for the soul upon the Holy Table; He is the One who cleanses us from our sicknesses;
who sanctifies the waters, who sanctifies the ends of the earth, who holds all things together -- and yet He has somehow managed to live unnoticed. People do not know about the Holy Spirit. There is a beautiful, all-embracing prayer that goes by the name 'O Heavenly King, O Comforter' -- and for today it is especially fitting. In it He says -- and this is a prayer addressed purely to the Holy Spirit, not to God the Father, nor to the second Person of the Holy Trinity, our Lord Jesus Christ. So then: 'who art everywhere present and fillest all things,' it says in one line, 'Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Good One.'
All the work, all the care of the soul that makes it fit for the Kingdom of Heaven, is, as we might put it, in the hands of the Holy Spirit -- about whom a person knows nothing at all, nothing whatever. If a person really knew that the Holy Spirit is present everywhere, and that even if he hid inside a keyhole, even if he crawled into the horn of an ox, the Holy Spirit -- that is to say, God -- would still see him, then he would not sin, or he would sin only a little. But as our divine Christ says, a person sins above all from lack of the fear of God: he does not fear, he takes no account, he shows no reverence for God, he does not reckon with God at all. If a person did reckon with God,
and knew that God sees him at the very moment he is sinning, he would not sin, or he would sin only a little. Do you know what precautions people take in order to sin? Let no one see us, let no one hear us, let us tell no one, let us leave no fingerprints. Let it be dark, let it be deserted, let there be just the two of us, let there be only a few of us. And yet all of it happens, and is discussed, and is carried out in the presence of the Holy Spirit -- that is, in the presence of God. And so, if a person would only learn 'O Heavenly King' by heart for his whole life and actually put it into practice, he would not merely be saved, he would not merely return to Paradise; he would go and live in the very heart of Paradise. It is a prayer that is always said first. Whatever prayer, whatever service the Church undertakes,
she begins with 'O Heavenly King'; she calls upon the Holy Spirit to come and help. A person cannot even pray without the power and the grace of the Holy Spirit. When Paul writes his letter to the Romans, in the eighth chapter, he says: 'The Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.' It is the Spirit who tells the Father what is truly to our benefit, what our soul needs. We, meanwhile, pray away and fill the air with words. We pray for material things. We pray that little Katina may pass the examinations, for little George, for the journey, that father may get well, that grandfather may get well -- these are the things we bow down for, these are the things we pray about. For the soul we do not pray. But the Holy Spirit is the One who prays on behalf of every person, if only each person will let Him,
and He tells God what is truly to the benefit of a person's soul. It is as though He said to God the Father: do not pay attention to the seaweed this man is talking about; he is thoughtless, he does not know what he is asking for, he is asking for the sort of rubbish that washes up on the shore. He is talking about kernels of corn; he is not talking about pearls, he is not talking about his soul. And the Holy Spirit is the One who, when He sees a person's ignorance but also his good intention, prays to God that it may be given to that person in proportion, not to his material benefit, but to the benefit of his soul. For the Holy Spirit has no other purpose in this world than to prepare souls for the Kingdom of Heaven. And this quite apart from the fact that He also sustains
this material world of ours -- because if there were no Holy Spirit, the seas would putrefy, even though God has salted them. There would be no waters, there would be no life, no natural life; there would be no trees, there would be no birds, there would be nothing at all, for He is the One who makes all things deathless and gives life to all things. It is said in just a few words. When we make our prayer to God the Father and to Christ, we speak of the Holy Spirit as well. Holy God -- the Father. Holy Mighty -- the Son, through whom all things were made. Holy Immortal -- and the Immortal One is He who gives life and gives worth and sustains all these things that Christ has made. Have mercy on us.
Three Persons, one essence, one power. The Holy Spirit is God to exactly the same degree as the Father and the Son. The difference between them is that the Father is the cause both of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He begets the Son and He causes the Spirit to proceed. God is without beginning, and since Christ comes forth from the Father who is without beginning, the Holy Spirit too is co-eternal with Him. If you count in years, you are counting Jesus as man, who became man; and if we, who believe, speak of one thousand nine hundred and eighty years of salvation, that is from Christ as man, not from Christ as God -- for Christ was God and is God. Before He came He always was, and He is, God. Of course, all this discussion around the subject of the Holy Trinity is something we cannot grasp. The heretics do not understand it at all. The Jehovah's Witnesses do not understand it at all.
And even the Orthodox, if they set out to understand it as it truly is, will not be able to, because it is a mystery. The word 'mystery' itself says it: my mouth is shut, I can say nothing. It comes from the word 'myo' -- my mouth is shut, I cannot put into words how it happens. Do you remember when the Archangel spoke to the Most Holy Theotokos and told her that she would conceive in a mysterious way? Our All-Holy Lady asked, 'How shall this be?' -- I cannot tell you. The how of it I do not know; what I can tell you is what will happen: 'The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee.' How the Holy Spirit will do it, I do not know. I would have to be the Holy Spirit, or something greater than the Holy Spirit, in order to understand the works of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit Himself. So people who set out to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity are being ridiculous. Every one of them has stumbled;
that is how the Jehovah's Witnesses became heretics, and so it has been from Arius right down to our own day. Because they wanted to solve the mystery with their own logic. How am I in the Son and how is the Son in the Father? How can Christ say, 'I and the Father are one'? And how can Christ say that when we eat His flesh and drink His blood, He abides in us and we in Him? How? No one knows how. But so it is -- and there is a most beautiful word of counsel in the Gospel according to John, which says: 'In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.' In that day ye shall know -- when you lay aside the flesh, because the flesh cannot discern spiritual things. And so, when it comes to the Holy Trinity, we walk forward by faith.
We cannot see this Holy Spirit at this moment, and yet the Holy Spirit is here among us. If there were no Holy Spirit, I would not be able to speak and you would not be able to listen. The One who at this very moment is opening the nous, the spiritual intellect, of each person, who is searching the heart, who is bringing sins or other faults to mind, is the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit withdraws, no one can move so much as a step toward anything good. The evil one will rise to the surface, and destruction is swift and certain. So we ought to be entreating this Holy Spirit, who abides in the Church -- this Paraclete, this other Paraclete. 'I will send you,' He says, 'another Paraclete' -- and this was not long after all these things -- and not ten days had passed before the other Paraclete came. The first Paraclete is Christ; He too is called Paraclete, and Paraclete means
Comforter. The One who comforts a person, who pays off his debts -- for the Holy Spirit is the One who cleanses us. If the Holy Spirit does not cleanse us, no one can be cleansed. As I was saying in the car on the way here, a person's good works do not pay off a person's sins. People must confess their sins if their good works are to count for anything. Otherwise they will be condemned, and their works will not be taken into account. When our Christ rose, on that same day in the evening, when He stood in their midst, the doors being shut and Thomas being absent, He said to them twice, 'Peace be unto you,' and then He said to them, 'Receive ye the Holy Spirit.' And what is it for? 'Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.' So it is through the Holy Spirit that sins are forgiven, or not forgiven.
Consequently, if I have no relationship with the Church, no relationship with the workers of the Church, no relationship with those innkeepers to whom the commission and the authority have been given to care for those who have fallen among thieves -- if I have no relationship with them, if I do not make use of them, then how can I expect my sins to be cleansed? They are not cleansed. My beloved, just as there is a blood bank, and when we have an emergency we run to find the right blood group and buy it for our needs, for our family, for our friends and so on, in just the same way there is a bank of the Spirit. The bank of the Spirit is the Church, which puts the affairs of a person's soul in order. Woe to those who stand far away from the Mysteries. Woe to those who think the Church is for Pascha and for Theophany -- to take the light from out in the courtyard, and to take the blessed water, the Agiasmos, from out in the courtyard,
Woe to the people who think the Church is there to hand out antidoron, the blessed bread given after the Liturgy, and to hand out the artos as well, and to have candles burning inside. Woe to such people; it would have been better for them not to have been born, better for them not to have been born. People need to learn what work the Church actually does, what the Mysteries of the Church are, and above all the Holy Eucharist. What is this that is about to come out and give us His own Body and His own Blood? A short while ago the priest, while he was praying — while we out here were singing 'We praise Thee' — was inside praying to God the Father and saying: Send down Thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts here set forth, upon the bread and upon the wine, and make this bread the precious Body of Thy Christ, Amen; and that which is in this cup the precious Blood of Thy Christ, Amen; changing them by Thy Holy Spirit, Amen, Amen, Amen — so that for those who receive them they may be for the watchfulness, the nepsis, of the soul,
for the remission of sins, for the fullness of the Kingdom, for communion of the Holy Spirit, and a thousand other things. So the person who does not receive Holy Communion does not receive the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not sold, the Spirit is not handed out as a favour. The Spirit is given by the Church above all in Holy Communion. Communion. That is why, if it were possible, Holy Communion should be daily. But because we are not willing to stop our sins even during the three great fasts of the year, then at the three great feasts — Pascha, Christmas, and the fifteenth of August — we do not come prepared for Holy Communion even then. And so the person who does not receive Communion does not have the grace of the Holy Spirit, and therefore his life is not put in order. And that petition which the Church says, that whatever stains of transgressions he bears, have compassion on Thine own creature, O Master —
he has not put that right, because here he never made use of what was said a moment ago, the prayer that asks God to cleanse us from every stain. Where am I to find you, so as to cleanse you? You do not come. You blaspheme Christ, you blaspheme the Most Holy Theotokos, you steal, you slander your neighbour, your eyes go chasing after other people's, and so on. You, you, you, you. Where am I to find you, so as to cleanse you? You remain unclean. And then the Church, even though it prays 'Blessed is the way,' finds that the way is not blessed at all, because the person refused to make use of the grace of the Holy Spirit. Listen to what the Apostle said. There are, he says, works of the flesh that it is shameful even to speak of. And indeed, if we were to name the things people do every day — and if it were possible one night to lift up that black veil that we call the night,
to take the roof tiles off and see what goes on inside the houses, what goes on inside the nightclubs, what goes on out in the streets, what goes on — you would hold your head in your hands, you would lose your mind, you would say: My God, how do You still put up with us? Why do You not shake this filthy plate and leave nothing standing? But He is long-suffering and full of mercy, and He waits for a person to repent, to turn back, to bring his sins and have them cleansed, and to be blessed for the Kingdom of Heaven. It is easy for Him to rain down fire and brimstone; it is easy for the deep to be opened again and the floodgates to open and for Him to send a new flood. But what would that accomplish? It would fill Hell all the sooner. That, however, is not the purpose of Christ's coming into the world. Christ is long-suffering, He is full of mercy, He is in no hurry, He waits. But blessed is the one who makes good use of repentance,
who makes good use of the kindness of God — that is, the one who will use this weapon that we call metanoia, repentance, that we call Holy Confession, in order to receive forgiveness through the Holy Spirit. So there are works, and there are also fruits. The works of the flesh are things it is shameful even to speak of. But the fruit of the Holy Spirit, as Paul writes in another of his letters — not to the Ephesians, but to the Galatians, chapter five, verse twenty-two — is love, gentleness, kindness, goodness, self-control, and so on and so on. Who would not want to have these things? But where is he to find them? They are not sold by the kilo. These are the produce of a tree, and that tree is called the Holy Spirit.
So if you do not have the tree, if you do not have the apple tree, how do you expect apples? You do not have the orange tree — how do you expect oranges? You do not have the olive tree — how do you expect olives? We are still wild olive trees; we have not been grafted in, so as to have the good fruits of the Holy Spirit. Do not ask people to cut off their faults as long as they have no relationship with the Church. And if the relationship is only formal and not living, then, my friends, they cannot even throw a cigarette, a bit of leaf, out of their hand. And they are called gentlemen — gentlemen who are slaves to a weed. And they are called ladies — ladies who are slaves to a weed. They cannot give up a single cigarette. That is how it is: the grace of the Holy Spirit does not come, and that is exactly why you cannot cut off anything — not your tongue, not your flesh, not your gluttony, nothing. Because only the grace of the Holy Spirit can change a person's nature, so that the things he loved yesterday and thought he would take with him into the grave, today he finds disgusting. For the grace of the Holy Spirit takes charge of a person and throws out the filth from within,
and it cleans a person's glasses so that he really sees. Take Paul — a colossus, a giant of learning — before Christ he had scales over his eyes. When he came face to face with Christ, the scales fell from his eyes, and when he ceased to be Saul and became Paul, he turned around and preached the very One he had been persecuting. But he stayed three days in darkness, and the scales fell from his eyes. That is what all those sharp-eyed people are like who are far from Christ: the ones who manage well, the ones who have arrived, the ones who have contrived to stay afloat, who have their flats and their savings and possessions and wonders, colour televisions and I do not know what other goods a person can easily come by. But they do not have Christ. They have scales over their eyes, and they still have not learned where they came from, why they came, and where they are going.
