Summary
The homily marks the anniversary of the translation of the relics of Saint Nektarios the Myrrh-streaming Wonderworker, observed some sixty years after that event. The second trap corrupts the good work itself, since offerings must come from one's own sweat to survive the fiery river of judgment seen by the Prophet Daniel, as illustrated by the factory owner who built a sanatorium instead of paying fair wages and by the donors whose plaque exposed their vainglory, and as Basil the Great says the good is not good unless it is done well. The continuation of the homily addresses a further device of the devil, keeping people away from the Church, which alone receives the newborn, brings the child at forty days, baptizes and regenerates him, and feeds him with Holy Communion, since salvation is not wages paid by an employer but life given through the Cross, the Tomb, and the Bread of Life, and discernment is the greatest gift of all.

The good God, through the intercessions of His Saint, the Hierarch, the Wonderworker, the Myrrh-streaming Nektarios, has counted us worthy to celebrate this year as well the anniversary of the translation of his holy relics, which took place at about this hour some sixty years ago. The purpose of man in this world, my beloved, is to be sanctified. He has no other purpose at all. If he is not sanctified, he has failed. It would have been better for him never to have been born, never to have passed through this world. After all, Christ too, who came into the world...
...in order to help people return to Paradise. And this, after all, is what every person prays for who is being carried at the last moment to his grave. This is what the chanter will say over him: Make me once again a citizen of Paradise. Make me a citizen of Paradise again. But what have you done, that I should make you a citizen of Paradise? When we stand before the memory of one of the Saints, or of the Theotokos, we ought in some way to imitate the life of those Saints. We should not stop at a merely formal gesture — lighting a candle, let us say, or bringing a gift. No. These too are expressions of piety, but...
...that is not what saves a person, that is not what forms a person, that is not what makes a person fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. It is true that man, for the most part, does evil. The good he does not pursue. And indeed, when he is asked why he does evil, we will get one answer: he will say that he was dragged into it by Satan, or that somebody else led him astray. Man needs to understand this: he is not dragged into anything, and Satan is not the one responsible. He himself is responsible. Because even if Satan points out a sin to us, we commit it only if we want to. We are not obliged to commit it, and he does not force us.
And if somebody else points out a sin to us as well, whether as an idea or as praxis, as something he actually does himself, again, we commit it only if we want to. We are not obliged to commit it, and he does not force us to commit it. Nobody puts a pistol to our ear. And that is precisely why we are guilty before God. From Satan his enemy, man has to face three pits, as the Fathers say — three holes, three trapdoors — and Satan takes care to set them up, just as hunters set traps to catch wild beasts, to catch lions. They dig great hollows for them, deep holes, and lay branches over the top, and the beasts cannot see what is underneath, and they fall in, and there they are caught.
...and then we have the rest of it. In exactly the same way Satan digs such holes, such trapdoors, such pits, to catch man. First, he fights him so as not to let him do good. Now someone will say, what is this good? The opposite of evil is the good. It needs no philosophy. And this good, toward whom am I to do it? I do good — will I not go to Paradise? The question is, toward whom are you doing the good? You give bread to another, you give clothing to another, you say a kind word to him. That is good. But that is only one side of it; it is a kindness turned outward. It is easy for a man to play the teacher to somebody else, but not to do the thing himself. That is the whole problem.
We have heard of and seen many people who take a severe stand against those who speak against religion, while they themselves do not practise what they say to others, or if they practise those things, they fail to practise others. And there a person is inconsistent. So Satan sends him this trap: to be good on the outside. As for the man who is not good on the inside, toward himself, his outward things are not taken into account at all. Someone will say, what kindness is he supposed to do to himself — to take care not to catch cold, to take care not to fall ill? No. He is to take care of his inner self, his soul. The man who does not take care of his soul is a criminal against himself. This is the man who...
...executes, with premeditation and at close quarters, his own immortal soul, all by himself. Because if the soul dies here and is condemned to Hell, it is the man himself who executed it. It was not executed on its own; we ourselves executed our own soul. Why? Because we kept it far from the source, far from Christ, far from God, far from His Church, far from His Mysteries, far in general from everything that refines the soul and sanctifies it here and makes it fit for there. So whatever kindness a man may do on the outside will not be reckoned to his account, so long as he does not also do it on the inside, toward his own immortal soul. Satan, then, is a craftsman, and what does he do now? He points out the bad people to us...
...and makes it seem that we are the good ones. Whereas in fact we too are bad, because we are not bad on the outside — we take care of the outside, we are polite, we watch our speech, we watch our behaviour, we wrong nobody — but we are bad on the inside, because we have separated our immortal soul, we have taken it far away from Christ, and consequently we have murdered our own soul with premeditation. So what good is any kindness on the outside? A person must therefore be good both inwardly and outwardly. And again, he must not stop and say, I am a good man, I bother nobody, I harm nobody — but you have shown mercy to no one, you stand by no one, you help no one. So what comes of having only the one side? He must of necessity have both sides: the negative one, not to...
...and the positive one, yes. That is, not to do evil, but to do good. This is a struggle, and it takes sharp attention on a person's part. A person must be a bishop — I do not mean by that that he must be a clergyman — he must be an overseer, one who keeps watch, epi skopon, on the target. That is, I hold my weapon and I take aim. At whom am I taking aim? At the devil, at the evil logismos, the intrusive thought, at evil in general, which comes to harm my immortal soul and to make it hard for me to do good to my fellow man. And even when we often do something good on the outside, there again we are selective: for the most part we do it for our relatives, for our friends, for the people we eat with, celebrate with, sin with. But everyone...
...he too is a person belonging to Christ, is he not? Is he not baptised as well? Is he not an image of Christ? A person must not show favouritism on this point, because that is an injustice. He must do good impartially, in every direction and toward everyone. From the moment a person is born until the moment he dies, Satan is always dropping it into his nous, into his spiritual intellect, not to do good; and if he does do good, always to do the good outwardly and never inwardly. So whatever good a person may do on the outside, if at the same time he does nothing for his soul, if he does not take care of it as well and tend it with what it needs, he has committed the number one sin; that is, he has fallen and been caught in the first pit, the first hole, the first hollow, as we would say...
...that Satan set for him, and he has him for certain. From then on, whenever he likes, he hauls him out of there and plants him in Hell. He has him like a little mouse that has fallen into a big bin — it jumps and jumps in there and cannot get out. Whenever you like, you take a stick and hit it and throw it to the cat. Now, if a person manages both of these things — outwardly, as far as he can, he is good to his fellow man, he does not harm him, he looks after him, he guards him as he guards his own; and at the same time he takes care of his soul as well; at the same time he has a relationship with Christ, a relationship with the Church, a relationship with the Mysteries — then he has escaped Satan. He has escaped him, and he is doing no evil, neither outwardly nor inwardly. So Satan...
...sends him a second trap, to catch him a little further along. Because, you know, Satan will take, let us say, seven hundred, five hundred years. Satan has patient endurance. Where will you go? I will catch you. If I do not catch you, I will catch your wife. If I do not catch your wife, I will catch your child. I will catch you. Where will you go? So he sets his traps, and a person must be alert. He must have glasses, spectacles — not for short-sightedness or long-sightedness, but the special glasses that Christ gives to the faithful, so as to discern the traps and the devices of Satan. We, unfortunately, do not know the devices of Satan. And now look: since you have escaped him, and you are not doing evil but doing good, he looks for a way to adulterate the good itself. For the good to be good, it must be your own, personally yours, a piece of your soul, a piece of your flesh, a piece of your sweat; it must be your own. In truth, we do good works.
Many times our names are even written up in the churches, as donors, as benefactors. We offer many things, and temples and altars of Orthodoxy are raised. But if that money were examined, where it was found, we would discover that it was not genuinely our own; it came from I do not know what. It was not genuine, and consequently the work that was done was not done well. And you know, works must hold up under testing, under scrutiny. I see there across from me the Judgment, as you see it too, where a river of fire pours out from the feet of Christ and comes down and goes below. Look now, above the door. These things are made on purpose, so that a person may see, as he goes out, what awaits him. A person's works, then, must be that genuine. The Kingdom of Heaven; the Nativity of the Theotokos; the...
...from his blood, from his very being, from his sweat, so that they can endure passing through that river of fire. They must not be of wood, they must not be of straw, they must not be counterfeit, because if they are counterfeit they will not hold up. Now the river you see there is taken from the Prophet Daniel, who saw this river of fire pouring out from His feet on the day of Judgment. And people whose works are of gold and of silver — those hold up; and not only do they hold up, they will shine all the brighter when they pass through the Judgment, when they pass through fire. But the other works, the ones done out of calculation, where we do something in order to put a man under obligation, where we send him a plate of food that he needs in order to enslave him in some other way, where we help him in order to exploit his family — those works are not good. They do not hold up.
On the surface they look good, but they are not good. And Basil the Great says it most beautifully and most pointedly in one place: The good is not good, if it is not done well. The good, he says, is not good in the eyes of God if it is not done well. If it is not from good materials and from good intent, it is not good, however good it may look in the eyes of the world. Because many people do things with some calculation, as if that were what God wants. So this too is a way for Satan to catch a person. And while a man thinks he is doing good works, his works are not good. For example: a great factory owner once gave a lunch for a friend of his one afternoon at a hotel. When they had eaten — the friend was a visitor — he said to him, let us go for a drive. He took him in his car and...
...took him out of the city for a drive. They came to a place where a large building was going up, laid out like a hospital. They stopped there, and he says to his friend: Do you see that building? Yes. I am the one putting it up, he says. You? But it looks like a hospital. Yes, he says, I am building it as a sanatorium. And for whom, says the other, are you building it? For my workers. The man laughed. Give them food to eat, he says, give them the money. Do not withhold their wages until they come down with tuberculosis and then build them a hospital here to put them into. You understand? To the world outside it would look as if — see there, he is spending a fortune and building for his workers. But the other man said a wise word to him. Pay your worker properly and he will not come down with tuberculosis, and there will be no need to build that thing over there. Give him what is his, so that he does not fall ill.
The stones are not needed. It is a way that looks good to the world; the man is recorded as a benefactor, but inside it has no such content. Once too, in Egypt, a bishop asked the Greek community there to give something toward building a school where Greek letters, the Greek language, could be taught. And he sent handwritten notes in his own hand to all the important men there, the leading citizens. He collected a hundred dollars. That is what he collected. Not even enough for a lock, let alone for building the thing. Nobody was moved by anything. Then he did the following. He issued a circular and said: Whoever offers the largest sum for this Institute of Greek Letters to be built...
...his name will be written in gold letters on a plaque, and the one who gives the most will be listed first. And the rest will be written in order after him. What do you think happened? Such a competition broke out among them — a secret one, of course — over who would send the most. And within a single week he had collected enough to build five of them, not one. In any case, without saying anything, the bishop appointed a day; once it was finished, after some months, after a year, I do not know how long, he appointed a day for the opening, for a celebration, and for the unveiling of the plaques, so that the donors would be displayed, if you please. And indeed the ground outside filled up with Porsches and Cadillacs. They came inside to attend.
They came for the blessing of the water, the Agiasmos, and for the unveiling of the plaques, to see who had the first place. The blessing of the water was performed, the hierarch spoke fittingly, and someone pulled the cover off so that the names would appear; and there, where they had put on their thick glasses to see their own names, to their astonishment they read the following: This work was built out of the vainglory of the Greek community and for their own self-regard. It was not built because they loved the Greek language, or the homeland, or a good work. It was built out of their vainglory, so that their names would be written up there and they could boast to the others that they had given the most. Because if they had really meant to give, they would have given sooner. Do you know how many such things happen? Many such things happen. God does not want these either.
Satan has caught many people. It is in this sense that I am telling you these things, because the Saint we honour this evening did act: he avoided evil, he did good, and he did the good well, and he remained humble. That is what I am saying. So when he does not catch us on the second side — we do it perfectly, it is from our own sweat, from our own labours, and so on — then comes the third hollow. And what hollow is that? That unsuspected hollow, where he slips into your nous a lofty little breeze that tells you: you have done a great work, only do not mention it anywhere. The very fact that you think to yourself that you did a work, that you gave, that you helped, that you spoke up where others do nothing — rather, where they do the exact opposite...
he only has to toss you one little thought like that... and you feel something lifting you up. Well, that is the moment he lifts you and carries you off. However much you imagine you will escape him, you do not escape him, and what is needed in this case is humility. A person cannot escape from the hands of Satan. Either he will catch him there, or he will catch him there, or he will catch him further on when he least suspects it, when he puts it into his nous, his spiritual intellect, that the good he does, his whole bearing, his family, his behaviour, are good, are holy, and are far better than other people's. Once he has simply planted that, then it gets expressed outwardly — because we do externalise it. If only you were like this too. Do you know what I do in secret? And do you know about my children? And do you know about this
he got top marks in this, and do you know about my dog, and do you know about my wardrobe, and do you know about my house, and do you know about my vineyard, and do you know about my donkey, and do you know, and do you know. There is no need for it. Down into that pit, where he never gets out again. So I say that this Saint avoided evil, he did good, and he lived in humility. This triptych of the Saint is what should stay with us out of the few minutes we have been speaking — something should stay with us. Evil we are obliged to avoid. Good we are obliged to do. And our attitude must be humble. If there is no humility, it cannot be done. When we do good, we must be ready for anything. We must not defend ourselves as though we were losing something. Because the one who is keeping the record is Christ, who knows how each person acts, how he conducts his life, how he thinks, what he shows on the outside and what he is on the inside.
It is recorded in Scripture that once our Christ was at the treasury, in the Temple of Solomon, and people were coming in and putting in copper, putting in money — the Gospel calls it copper — and Christ, it says, was watching how they put it in, not how much they put in. How they put it in, copper, how they put it in. And this was so, because they could actually see Christ there. They threw it in, they threw in even more, and they threw it in scattered so that it would clatter, so that everyone would realise how much they had given. Into that same line came the widow with her two mites, and when she opened her little handkerchief and took out the two mites and threw them in and left only the dust inside the handkerchief, nothing else. Then our Christ said, this woman, he says, has put in more than all of them — all of them together did not put in as much as that lady's two mites. In actual fact they had put in far more.
They had not put in two mites; they were throwing in large sums, staters and so on. But in Christ's eyes, the widow's two mites were worth more than all the millions the others put in, or that we put in today. So examine your life closely, step by step. We are human beings; egotism will slip past us and trouble us, and the eye will trouble us, and self-interest will trouble us, many things will trouble us, and other people's words will trouble us, and the world will trouble us. But we have an obligation to stand firm. If we do not stand firm and we are found fallen at the hour of death, we are lost, and it would have been better never to have been born. God is not obliged to give us anything. All of this we are obliged to do.
He is not obliged, because he sets the table. He sets the table so that you may eat.
So whatever we do, we will do it humbly, and we will say, I have done nothing. And we will say it to ourselves as well, I have done nothing. Humility must be shown towards ourselves first, not outwardly. I am humble — like the man who said to Socrates that he was humble. I can see your humility, he said, your pride, rather, through the holes in your garment. For this man had deliberately made holes in it and wore a torn garment, and at the same time he was saying that he was humble. But Socrates saw him as a man full of pride. Give away what you have, and you have no need of this thing you are doing. These are the things I thought could be said this evening, when this compassionate Saint, this myrrh-streaming one, this wonderworker who has moved the whole world and who still keeps coming to the aid of people in their weaknesses, is set before us this evening.
these are the things that could be said, that can leave behind something useful. So I pray that the good God, through the intercessions of this hierarch, may help us too. If we are not doing good, that we may do it; if we are not avoiding evil, that we may avoid it. That we may do it rightly and in humility, and that we may say that all of it is his. Because as it says, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down. We have nothing of our own. Man's own production is only sins. The other things, the good works, belong to Christ acting through the person. Just as the miracles belong to Christ acting through the Saint. The Saint does not do them; Christ does them through the Saint. Just as with our Most Holy Theotokos — the All-Holy does not do them, it is Christ through the All-Holy. You will have heard the troparia. Glory to Him who has glorified you, glory to Him who has crowned you, glory to Him who works healings for all through you. He is the one who works healings for all through you. And so,
Saint Nektarios the Myrrh-streaming Wonderworker gave us the opportunity last night as well to say something for the benefit of our soul, since God has arranged for us to pass through this world. I would like now, if you will allow me, to set before you again today a few things that shed light on the devices of Satan, who takes care in every way to set his traps so that a person
may not be saved. In our talk yesterday evening we presented three situations that Satan creates as a trap for a person, to catch him so that he will not let him do good but rather do evil, and if he does do good, that he should not do it in such a way that it will have any value in the eyes of God. Today, among these devices, and in the continuation the Saint's feast gives us, I would like to present another one. The only one who knows what happens here inside the Church is the devil. He knows better than we human beings do. That is exactly why he takes care to set his traps so that we will not come to Church. For many people the Church is regarded as a sideline, that is, something that is not really necessary. The Church is simply there for feast days, the Church is simply there for festivals, or even for the interests, as people say, of certain individuals connected with the Church and with the clergy. But the truth is not there, and he really does manage to keep a great many people away, not letting them come to Church. He accuses the clergy to them, he tells a man that he is a good person and that those who are in Church are not like him — how much better he is than the churchwarden, for example, or the chanter.
So, I say, in every way he keeps a person occupied outside the Church. He puts jobs in front of him, he puts needs in front of him, and the person, having no discernment — which is the greatest gift of all, greater even than love itself, discernment, as our Holy Fathers say, the mother of the virtues, discernment. If a mother has no discernment, her love for her child will destroy it, just as if a father has no discernment, his love for his child will destroy the child. So when a person has no discernment, he cannot discern what his own true interests are, and why he came into this world. Man did not come into this world, as
we have had occasion to say before, in order to live. Man came in order to die, and only then to live. Life is beyond the grave; it is not this one. This one is a firefly; this life here is nothing at all compared with eternity. And even so, he has a purpose in having come here: he came to labour and to conduct his life so rightly that he can gain entry into Paradise, which is his return to Paradise. And in order to return to Paradise, he cannot return by way of his house, he cannot return by way of the coffee shop, he cannot return by way of his cruise, or from outside, I do not know where, not to mention other things too shameful to name. He returns through the Church. The Church receives a person when he comes into the world; it is she who gives him birth through the priest and offers her prayers for him
and through her intercessions and prayers the Church protects the infant that has come into the world. Then at forty days she takes it and brings it into the Church, she baptises it and regenerates it, and she is the one who feeds it again from her other breast in Holy Communion, and makes it a perfect man in Jesus Christ, able now to pass over into eternity. So if a person decides to go his own way, because Satan deceives him and tells him that the Church is not necessary, that you can spend your time there but it is for the pious types, that even God gets tired of all those Lord have mercies — and then, when Satan does not manage to persuade the person to stay outside, though sadly he does keep many outside. In all sorts of ways: I say my prayers at home, I am at my work and my work is my prayer. All of these things come from Satan.
to keep a person from coming to Church, from making use of the Church, or even from making something of himself within the Church. Apart from the Church a person is not built up; let him make whatever he likes, let him do whatever good work he likes. Salvation is not a matter of works, man's salvation, Christ is not an employer that we should go and be paid for our good works. Christ is the way — life-giving is that side of his from which the blood flowed and Baptism sprang forth. Life-giving is the Cross, from which man's salvation sprang forth. Holy Communion is called the Bread of Life. Life-giving is the Tomb; out of the Tomb came the Resurrection. It is a matter of life and death for the soul of a human being. And Christ and his Church have to do with the life and the soul of a human being.
The body he maintains by means of the material things he has. But in order to maintain the soul, the Church is needed. That is why we see so many people who will sit outside in the coffee shop even though the Liturgy is being served in Church. If a person knew what the Church is for him, he would never miss Vespers or Matins, Orthros. And if you read the sermons of the divine Chrysostom, you will see a sermon in the morning and a sermon in the evening. And to whom was he speaking, to the stalls or to the pillars? He was speaking to people. And if you follow the flow of his words, you will see that he was speaking to people, and to great numbers of them in our churches. Nobody would go off to his work before he had passed by the Church. He would go to Church, and after that he would go to his work. Today, when we have arranged to work five hours and four hours and to sin for eighteen, we have room to spare.
The margins are there, we can go to Church gladly and easily. And most people especially, those with their own means and so on, can do it easily, the whole family. But a person does not want to, because he has been convinced by Satan that the Church accomplishes nothing. That is why we see that he has managed to get through to various governments today as well. The slogans are, build schools, build factories, build things like that, and not churches, because the Church is a liability. Because it cannot be advertised that a human being has a soul as well, and that the soul is not fed with beans, or with corn, or with veal, or with hamburgers, or with gold, or with money, or with anything at all. It wants Christ, and every life that has no relationship with the Church is empty. That is why we have the nervous breakdowns, that is why we have the neurological illnesses, that is why we have the psychiatrists, that is why we have the suicides, that is why we have the madness, that is why, that is why, that is why. Because a person is living far from the Church.
In Church a person is lightened; it is like stepping into a spiritual bath, and the more prepared he comes, the more he takes away with him when he leaves. He leaves a different man. So this is one of the devices and one of the traps: to make a person not go to Church. And if someone does happen to think about it a little seriously and so on, and does go to Church, then Satan sets him a second trap, the one about willingness. There is no need for you to be at Church from early morning, he says. And many people ask, has the third bell rung? Which means, the second one and the first one are not for you. The service is not for you from the Blessed is the Kingdom in the morning. From what point is it for you, then? It is for the priests — and for whom is it being said, for God? And everyone will know. Are we to tell you that he is a Saint? Who is a Saint? He is not there from early morning. And so this is the second trap: that a person should go to Church at whatever hour suits him. Whereas when it comes to a dinner table...
he goes quickly to the table; he does not go when they are clearing away the plates and collecting the forks and the others have already eaten or are on their fruit. No, he goes quickly. When he is going to see a film, he will watch the film from the beginning. When he plants himself in front of that demon-box of a television to watch four or five hours of one thing after another, he sits there from the beginning and stares at it, and they run rings around him. He does not want to hear anyone or see anyone; he is not thirsty, he is not hungry, and he has no other bodily need at all that day. He will do everything properly and beautifully when it comes to things that do not benefit him but rather ruin him. But when it comes to Church, well, it is cold in the morning; let the day warm up a little. I am tired, let me go a bit later. This does not only happen with adults; it happens with the children too. And the adults encourage it. You, my dear, come along a little later, you are tired.
from your studying. Whereas if they were going on an excursion they would not be tired, they would get up. If the boy were a scout and had to go, from early in the morning they would not be tired, they would get up. So this too is a device for that purpose, not to let a person go to Church properly. It is a trap of Satan, and that is why a certain force is always needed. Our Christ told us, The Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. A person must press forward in every direction. I am not listening to you, Satan, and I will do what is right. The third trap comes when he sees that a person has got away from him and he has had to let him go, and he does go to Church: then the aim is that he should not go to Church rightly. Because one of the Fathers of our Church, and specifically to you he says, You have entered the temple; count yourself worthy. You have set foot, he says, on the threshold of the church and gone inside
meaning that you have thought it over well, that you are worthy, that your affairs are in order, and so you have come; because you come here to receive. You will bring a vessel with you. When you go to buy something at the market, you take a vessel suited to the things you are going to get. If they are solids, you take the appropriate container, the appropriate bag; if they are liquids, you take the appropriate container or jar, you wash it, you smell it, you do whatever is needed so as to put in what you want, which you are going to pay for with money that came from your sweat, and you cannot afford to throw it away. In the same way, in order to come to Church a person will come with a vessel, and that is called the soul. The soul must be clean, it must be at peace and in love. It is unthinkable for a person to come into the Church without being at peace with his fellow human beings and with God.
Peace with our fellow men — you know the way that peace gets shattered: with lawsuits, with gossip, with insults, with frauds, with shady schemes, with thefts, with lies, with slander, and the rest. That is how
peace with people is broken. And when peace with people is broken, the grace of the Holy Spirit does not rest upon those people who are at odds with others. We also need peace with God. I don't know whether you have noticed how the service in the Church begins, what the very first words are: "In peace let us pray to the Lord." "For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord." And with every petition, this and that, "let us pray to the Lord," "help us, save us," and so on. Peace is absolutely necessary. If there is no peace with people, there is no peace with God either. "But do I have peace with God?" Seriously now — do you have no sins? "Well, yes, I have sins." Then how will you have peace with God? Peace means you are settled with God, in the absence of sin. But sin came. Sin came, and a wall went up between him and God. And so, how can He have mercy on you, when what He sees before Him is
your sin — it has tied His hands. He cannot have mercy on you. And many of us go to church simply because it is a feast day, simply because there is a festival, simply because it is our name day, simply because we are used to it and we want to fill up our hours within our weekly schedule. We go at whatever hour we please, we light a candle, and we leave again at whatever hour we please. Have we done anything? No. "I didn't manage to keep you from going, and you went; but you're still mine, because you don't think about where you have gone, who is standing before you, whom you are going to speak with, to whom you are going to offer yourself." You may be able to fool me. You may be able to fool your wife and live a second life. You may be able to fool your husband and live a second life. Your daughter, your brother, the public prosecutor — you may be able to fool them all. Christ you cannot fool. It is a delusion; we are really making fools of ourselves, not of God. Christ knows what we are before we ever walk in.
That is why it is said, in the words of the Scriptures, that He searches the hearts and the reins — our innermost thoughts. It is the most delicate thing there is, to examine a person's heart and his inward parts. And yet Christ is the One who knows how each person who comes here is thinking. And He gives to each one. We say it to you from the very outset, if you have noticed, at the time of the Doxology: "Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have set our hope on You" — that is, according to how we have prepared ourselves, so may He give to us. In the law of the Gospel it says: when you come to the church, and especially when you bring some offering, when you bring some gift, before you go in, it says, stand outside on the steps and think it over, and see whether you have anything against anyone — or someone else may have something against you. You are obliged to ask his forgiveness, whether from below upward or from above downward, no matter whether he grants it to you or not. And then, it says, come and offer your gift.
Because it is the Saturday of Souls, we bring here — sinners as we are — kollyva, the boiled wheat offered for the departed, and it is received. Because it is the Saturday of Souls, one lady or another brings a prosphoron, and so on. But God says concerning sinners that He does not accept such a thing. And so, if he does not manage to keep us from coming at all, and if he does not manage to keep us from coming in the morning, so that in the end we walk into the Church at whatever hour we please, then he sets to work so that we do not come to the Church in a fit state. And even if some do come in a fit state, at the end of this triple round of three traps he has another subtle device, the one I spoke about last night. He has the matter of pride. Look at what it is. You didn't go to church today — well, you didn't go. And he makes a person judge someone else who didn't go to church. Or the man says inside himself: "The church was empty today, but I was there, I answered the roll call."
And you lose it all, with a single stroke of the pen. It is a hard thing for a person to guard what he has gained. And it takes humility. "My Christ, do not take anyone before he is ready. I am a sinful man. And that is exactly why I come. I do not come because I am holy." Rather, we ought to know that the Church is not for the healthy, it is for the sick, just as hospitals are for the sick. The doctors who are inside, the medicines that are given, and in general the prescriptions they hand to each one — all of it is because people are ill, so that they may get through this transitional period and one day become well and be cured and walk out. This is exactly what the Church does. The priest is a sinner, the chanter is a sinner, the sacristan too is a sinner. But we must be sinners who are struggling, not sinners who stay put and sit down and pile sins on top of our sins. Even though
we make a small confession and say, "We are sinful people." Agreed. That is all the more reason, since you yourself confess that you are full of sin. So what are you doing about it in that case? Because, as I told you once, an angel of the Lord took an ascetic and led him out to show him the strange things of this world. And do you know what he showed him? Listen to it if you have not heard it; and if you have heard it, forgive me for wearying you. He brought him near a man who had been cutting wood and was going to load it up. But the wood was too much and he could not load it. So he set the bundle down on the ground, and instead of taking some wood off, he went and cut still more wood and put it on top, and tried again to load it. He could not lift it. And he sets it down again, and instead of taking wood off so it would be lighter, he went and cut still more and put it on top.
"Come along," he says to him. And he takes him from there and they go on. He leads him further down to a well — a big, beautiful one, with clear running water. There was a man drawing water with the winch, but his bucket, his pail, was full of holes. By the time the water came up to the top, the pail was arriving empty. He watched this man too and marvelled. "Let us go," he says to him. He goes on, he leads him further down; there was a lovely little chapel, and he showed him a man on horseback who was trying to go in and could not fit through the door, for one thing. And for another, he had a long pole beside him, held out in front of him, and he would not so much as lower it so that he could get through, and it was making it impossible for him. "What is that man doing there? How is he going to get in? He cannot get in." In any case, the angel now drew him aside to give him the explanations. "The first man you saw," he says to him, "stands for sinful people, who, although they already have sins, instead of unloading some, keep loading on still more."
And this happens every single day. Instead of cleaning ourselves up, we add more sins. But the things we do for the body, we do not do for the soul. If we get dirty, the very moment we have put on our suit, we will go and take it off and put on another. And that is what the dry cleaner's is for. Or if we get lightly soiled, we will go and wash. And again, and again. And again, and again. A hundred times a day we will clean ourselves. Cleanliness. But for the soul, there is no discussion at all. Sin upon sin. We wait for the fifteenth of August, the Dormition fast, we wait for Pascha, we wait for Christmas, to go to Holy Confession and to leave the soul filthy the rest of the time. It is our own responsibility. The second man, the one who was drawing up the water like that, was the man of good works. Many good works — but he does them, it says, with pride, and he puts others under obligation. And these are the holes in the pail, it says, and he holds nothing at all, and he will be found empty on that Day. Just as the pail came up empty, so will that man be found who did not do his works for the glory of God, and did not do them out of his own sweat, but did his good works out of injustices and the like.
And the third one, he says, is the proud man, who wants to put God down underneath him and trample on Him, who wants everything in the church to be done the way he wants it, even though he never goes to church except once a year, either at Theophany or at Pascha, and he takes the light from outside and the Agiasmos, the blessed water, from outside, and off he goes home — and he wants to walk in with his pride intact. Such a man will not be able to be benefited, neither in this church here, nor in the church not made with hands of the Kingdom of Heaven. In one or another of these categories stand both I and you. My beloved, I set these things before you on that evening, because our Saint gives us this opportunity. The Saint did not do evil. The Saint always did good, from the time he was a small child. And he did the good in the way God wants it done. As I told you yesterday as well, and as Basil the Great says, the good must be done well, for the good is not good unless it is done well. I do not know how you will take hold of these things and
how you will be able to take them in and make them your own. In any case, I have one thing to say: that the Saints are set before us for imitation, and not only as physicians. May they be physicians of our souls first, and of our bodies afterward. And just as they were counted worthy to gain their own souls, may they help us also to gain our soul.
