Summary

The Gospel Law in Matthew 5–7 requires Christians to unite faith with concrete obedience rather than merely profess belief. The soul must govern the body through discernment and discipline, while the body should be honored as an instrument of prayer, charity, service, and sanctification. Christ’s command not to be anxious calls believers to trust God for bodily needs while placing the eternal salvation of the soul above temporary comfort.

I wanted to say something that would offer moral instruction, but would also have a doctrinal content. I would like to draw it from the events of yesterday, which are taken from the Gospel Law. As we have said before, the Gospel Law is written in the fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of Matthew. There we find all the finer details that a person must attend to and put into practice in order to bring the soul to maturity, rather than leaving it at the mere words, “I believe.” Yes, you believe—but what do you do?

Many times we meet people whose actions are quite different from what they claim to believe. Man, with Satan’s help, tries to unite things that cannot be united. He insists on joining the world to God. He says, “I can be a Christian and still be sociable. I can live as fashion demands, as the world demands, perhaps as my own interests demand, and as the flesh demands. Why should I deprive it? Of course I am a Christian and I believe, but I am not a monk; monks are something else.” This is where many people confuse everything. Today you enter a home and cannot tell whether it is a spiritual home or a worldly one.

You may see an icon somewhere inside, where the other things are less visible, or perhaps a cross; but generally, deep down, the life is not Christian in every respect. Compromises are made. A person must bear in mind that there are two masters. One is called Christ, and the other is called the devil. Now, as Christ tells us very clearly, can a person work for two masters? Can I? One of my employers is in Kolonaki and the other is in Kasipodio. I am working on the building belonging to the employer in Kasipodio. Can I claim that I am also working for the other employer and expect him to pay me as well? Certainly not. I will be paid by the one for whom I work.

He will take responsibility for paying me. Yet we think we can satisfy both masters. What does Christ want? For me to go to Church. Very well, I shall go to Church—but in the afternoon I shall also go to the stadium. I shall go to the racetrack, to the cinema, and to the taverna with my friends. Christ is Christ, and the world is the world. “But I live in the world.” Yes, and a fish lives in the sea, yet it is not salty—not even lightly salted. Does that tell you nothing? Take a fish that has lived in the sea for ten or fifteen years and cook it without adding salt; you will throw it away. Is there anything more tasteless or useless? Fifteen years in salt water, and you still remained like this? “Yes, I remained like this.” And how did you do it? “I did it to teach you, you faithless one.”

You too must live amid the salt, amid the filth of this world, without absorbing what belongs to this world. It is difficult. Yes, difficult—but what is easy? Is chewing not hard work? Will you therefore refuse to chew? Then you will ruin your stomach. And yet, as you see today, people insist on carrying Christ into the world and the world into Christ. Thank you very much! Go to a wedding and see what happens there. Look at those who come supposedly to worship. They do not even know why they are attending the wedding. They go to display their clothes. They do not go to pray that God will strengthen the married couple and keep them from separating the very next day. And you see the sorry state of things; you see what it is all about—romance and passion.

Ten years of courtship and of pulling one another this way and that, and then, five days after the crowns have been placed upon their heads, they separate—as though they had never known each other. And indeed they never truly knew one another; within five days they proved that they had never truly seen each other. Neither they nor those who attended made the sign of the Cross and said, “My Christ, strengthen this couple, because Satan, the enemy of these sacred institutions, will set himself to tear them apart.” We want to bring our worldliness into the Church. Today, when you enter an Orthodox church for a Baptism or a wedding, you cannot tell whether you are in Hollywood or in church; it is all the same. But can this worldliness be brought into this sacred place? If you insist on behaving that way, can you not at least preserve appearances? Do you not have one outfit for going to the market, another for going out on a walk, and clothing for going to the beach?

You have clothes for a funeral, and clothes for paying a visit. Then set aside an outfit for going to Church as well.

Yes, one outfit specifically for going to Church. How can you take all those other things and carry them into the Church? We imagine that we can reconcile the two. Christ says plainly, “No one can serve two masters—God and Mammon.” These two things do not belong together. “I am a Christian, but can I avoid lying in my business? Can I avoid stealing? How else will I meet my tax obligations?” The compromise is made at once. Under the threat of taxation, or of rising prices, or some other circumstance, the commercial lie is told in advance. Thus a person begins serving the devil beforehand, without even knowing whether that difficult situation will ever actually arise.

“It may happen; there is no other way,” he says. Very well, then. But if we pay attention, we shall see that Christ makes the matter perfectly clear: “It cannot be done. Either you will love the one and hate the other; there is no other possibility. Either you will hold fast to the one and reject the other.” Yet we keep looking in both directions. We are amphibious creatures. We climb out of the mud, but at the slightest thing—splash!—we are back in it. Have you seen what frogs do? They come out, and the moment they hear a noise—splash!—they are back in the mud. We have not withdrawn from sin; we have not separated ourselves from the world. We want both the world and God. We do not want to remain far away from God.

But we are also afraid of the world, and so we act according to the world. Suppose a visitor comes during a fasting period. “We shall not fast, because we have a guest.” Does that mean the guest has come to drive Christ away and take His place? Should you not send such a guest away? You have no need of that guest. Keep the other Guest, the One of whom they sing on Great and Holy Friday: “Give me this Stranger.” Keep Him, and send the other one away. Whoever he may be, if he comes to overturn the order of your life, to offend your faith, or to make you betray your faith, you have no need of that guest. It makes no difference who he is—your mother, your father, or a brother whom you have not seen for two hundred years. Yet we compromise. “Of course we cooked that food for them, but we ourselves did not eat it.” Really? But you cooked it! Why did we cook it for them? So that they would not be displeased? So that we would not lose them as customers? Why did we cook it?

You know that tomorrow they will go before Christ and say, “What You are telling me cannot be true, Christ. I knew certain Christians—this one, that one, and others—who assured everyone that they were Christians and were praised as Christians. Yet they never objected to me and never kept the fast. They should never have prepared that food for me.” You will then find many medals hanging around your neck because of the way you behaved toward these worldly people—but they will be medals of blame. Unfortunately, I repeat, although Christ cries out and says, “Take care to separate yourselves and remain distinct, you who are Mine,” we do not do so. If you open to Matthew 6:24, you will find precisely what I have just told you.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold fast to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon.” They are two opposing things. Mammon, of course, means self-interest. But self-interest is not confined to money. There is also the interest of the flesh, the interest of one’s social circle, the interest of the ego, and the interest of the world. It suits me to be applauded. It suits me to obtain the world’s approval and hear it say, “Yes, this man is all right. He conducts himself properly. He is broad-minded, not foolish. He is an intelligent religious man; he manages to do both.” But how can both be done? A religious person cannot do both. How could it be possible? Either you will be in the water or outside the water. Either you will be with Christ, or—

—you will be with the devil. If you embrace Christ and then go to the devil’s dance, Christ will leave; He will not remain there. If you embrace the devil and then go to Christ’s gathering, into Christ’s Church, the devil will flee, because God has come. How will you join together things that by their very nature cannot be joined? Can wood be joined structurally to concrete? No. Steel can be joined to concrete. How, then, will you join these two things that do not belong together? And yet many times, without even realizing it, we serve the weaknesses of both the flesh and the world, because we have not understood the true value and place of these two elements within us. As you know, man has a spiritual aspect, but also a bodily one. No one sees the spirit; no one sees his own soul. But he does see his flesh.

He sees it growing old. He sees his hair turning white, his teeth beginning to fall out, and his legs no longer able to carry him. And because he is afraid of what will happen to this poor body—which is forever whining that it is unwell, uncomfortable, unable to fast, unable to make prostrations, and unable to stand in Church—he gives in to its complaints.

The flesh is called an antlion: in one place it behaves like a little beast, and in another it plays dead like a lifeless bug. Yet you fuss over your flesh as though you were afraid the dough might turn sour. The soul must sit upon it as the rider. “No, I will not go there; it will not happen. I will not yield to your pleasure, and I will not satisfy you. Your time will come. I shall direct you; you shall not direct me. I am the rider and you are the beast of burden. I am the driver.”

“You are the vehicle. You will not climb on top and do whatever you please with me.” For the flesh, as you know if you have paid attention, always wants, desires, and works against the soul, seeking things that are not beneficial to the soul. The soul, in turn, wants, desires, and needs the very things the body does not want. Thus the soul and the body are at war. If the body succeeds in defeating the soul, we shall be lost. But if the soul perseveres, stands firm, and directs the flesh with discernment—when it should and as much as it should—then all goes well. For the flesh alone is not the human person. Of course, neither is the soul alone the whole human person; man consists of both. To have an egg, do we not need both the yolk and the white? We also need the shell.

Although the shell is necessary for the egg, the shell itself is not the egg; the egg is chiefly what is contained within it. So it is with the human body and with the human person. The flesh is not the principal part of man. The flesh is the shell; it is the cage containing the bird. The principal part of man is the spirit, though the body too is necessary and possesses dignity. This is precisely why Christ sanctifies the holy relics. They give forth a sweet fragrance, work miracles, and possess grace. You know about the holy relics of our Saints, whether their bodies are preserved whole or their relics are divided. Satan fears and trembles before them, because they are regarded as dwelling places of the Holy Spirit. The body is sanctified in proportion to how it suffered and offered itself together with the soul. For the soul dwells within the body, and through the body—

—it offers sacrifice, prayer, prostrations, service to one’s neighbor, almsgiving, and every kind of good work. Thus the body itself is sanctified, and it too remains with the spirit in eternity. How many holy bodies remain fragrant and sweet-smelling to this day because they struggled together with the soul! I do not mean, then, that we should take no care of the body. Should we cast it aside and say that we are purely spiritual people? No. This is why discernment is always necessary. But the body must not consume all our attention, as happens to people today. They are absorbed in material things and in how they can acquire possessions of their own. Is it wrong for someone to acquire something?

If you are going to acquire it at the expense of the other part of you, which is called the soul, then do not acquire it. I remember a small incident. Once I was speaking in Patissia. A certain man would always listen from a distance, from his balcony. They told me, “Downstairs, on the third floor, there is a man who listens to the talk from his balcony, but he does not want to come up into the hall.” “Leave him,” I said. “One day he will mature and come.” They said, “We shall speak with him. Would you be willing to remain a little later and talk to him, if he agrees?” Gladly. If God wills that I should enlighten him in some way, I shall gladly do it. In any event, after two or three occasions, they found a way to bring us together.

As we spoke, I asked him this question: “What is preventing you from going to Holy Confession? I would like you to tell me. I believe you have now reached an age when you are no longer committing sins, at least sins of the flesh, which are among the chief obstacles that keep a person far from Christ. So I would like you to tell me what is keeping you away and preventing you from confessing.” Do you know what answer he gave me? “You are right, Mr. Panagopoulos,” he said, “but at the moment I am building a house.”

That says a great deal. He worked for a public agency, and he was defrauding that agency. He was building a house with stolen money. Do you understand? You steal from the tax authorities, you steal from the Social Insurance Institute, you steal from many people in order to build a house. You tell many lies. “Let me finish all this first, and then I will go to confession.” Do you understand? Of course, may God grant you the time and wait for you. But know that you have knowingly acted deceitfully from the outset, and the Lord knows it. You did not sin in ignorance; you sinned knowingly, taking advantage of God’s longsuffering. And I do not know whether you will obtain God’s forgiveness, nor how deeply you will have to repent and weep. And so many people, because of certain material things in this world, remain

far from Christ, far from the Church, far from the Gospel. A man has taken on installment payments, and so he must lie, devise schemes, take something from somewhere, steal, and so forth, merely to acquire things he may not even need. You see, we have brought our lives to the point where we suffer because of luxuries, not necessities. We have never wished to look back and see how we lived and how our parents raised us. By this I do not mean that what is called progress must come to an end. My father and mother had one cooking pot at home, one earthenware baking dish, and another made of copper—and that was the entire

furnishing of the kitchen. Yet with these they served the nine children we were, together with two adults—eleven people in all. What, then, am I to say today, when my kitchen costs as much as an entire apartment? Did those people not live? They did. Who made the noose and put it around my neck? I did it myself. Anxiety, then, and constant care! What did people do before they acquired television? For thousands of years people lived without television—wise people, scientists, righteous people, people of every faith. But now they have put a noose around their necks. Then they made another noose by replacing the television, and now they must have one in color. Now they measure how many inches they can afford, and so on. Do you understand? We used to walk all the way to Athens. Now...

we go by bus. And now everyone simply must have a vehicle of his own—and, by extension, every person must have his own car. Before long we shall have helicopters carrying us from rooftop to rooftop. Tell me, what have we achieved? Is the world better? Is it more peaceful? Does the world today have more joy and happiness—or only more anxiety, stress, and daily strain? Will anyone say yes? I will tell him that he is telling a Lie with a capital L. If that were true, if happiness were lying there in the street, what purpose would mental hospitals serve? Whom have all these psychiatric hospitals gathered inside—the joyful or those who have lost their minds? And why did they lose their minds? By running after the flesh, running after pleasures, running after the world.

That is why our generation, the world, has lost its mind. Soon every individual—not merely every family—will have a psychiatrist of his own. Abroad they have a family psychiatrist, just as we have our family physician. They have their psychiatrist, and little by little each of us will have one, because we have withdrawn and departed from the way of God. And when the spiritual father—the priest, that is—leaves a person’s spiritual home, his place is taken by the psychiatrist. When a person has no relationship with the Church, he will have a relationship with neurological clinics. People today have lost their sleep. Why? Look into it and find out. Of course, there are certain medical causes, but they account for only a small percentage. Out of a hundred people who cannot sleep today,

perhaps two have a medical cause: something has happened to them, they have fallen ill, and they truly suffer. But the other ninety-eight suffer because of sins and because they have moved away from God. Examine it, reflect on it, and you will see. Why, then, all this strain and anxiety? Because man trusts that contractor called the devil, who steals man’s today and promises him tomorrow. He offers things and ways of living easily, claiming that man can very quickly make his life happy, just as he promised Eve. Yet the result is the opposite. If, then, a person reflects on what we have been saying, he will reach the point of asking, “How can I avoid these things—if not entirely, then at least in part?”

I can act in time. One essential thought must become the possession of every person: there is no present. We often speak about the past, the present, and the future, yet the present does not exist. The words I am speaking now are present—and immediately they are past. The words I am about to speak—what are they? The future. In a fraction of a second Christ turns the switch and says, “Come and give an account.” Where is the present? It does not exist. When a person understands that there is no present, should he not begin to fear? When it happens to him—and it will—he will be like a dog

that acts brave while its feet are planted on the ground. But when the dogcatcher’s net takes hold of it, lifts it up, and its feet no longer touch the ground, its courage begins to fail. I do not know whether you have ever seen a dogcatcher seize a dog in a net, lift it up, and carry it away. The beast that once made your knees tremble loses its courage when the net lifts it from the earth: it feels itself suspended, with nothing beneath it and no support of its own. So it is with man. Unfortunately, he does not believe this. He imagines that he stands securely. He rests on his wallet, his apartment, his property, his securities, his cleverness, his political connections. He thinks he stands firm. He stands on none of them. At this very moment Christ may say to you, “Come and give an account.” What does he stand on then?

Does he stand on anything, my child? On what? On what does Onassis stand now? Why look far away? Who did not envy him? Who would not have wanted his fame and his wealth? He left them behind. And where are those who wanted them—and where are those who mourned him? Let us go on, then. Why do we not reflect more deeply?

If a person understands that he is suspended between heaven and earth, between past and future, and does not know whether his life will end in the next second, why does he not prepare himself? Why does he not say, “Lord, grant me more time—not so that I may finish the upper floor, not so that I may put my country house in order,

but so that I may make a beginning of metanoia, of repentance. Grant me more time so that I may begin to repent.” “Let me marry off my children,” and so forth, “because if I die, they will remain unmarried.” They find spouses by themselves, and others find them without us; when do they ask us anymore? Today we do not arrange our children’s marriages; they marry on their own, and they do not even invite us to the wedding. These are lies that Satan serves us. Who believes them? “What can we do? We are young; we must work.” For what must you work—for what is permanent, or for what is temporary? Where is your reason? By this I do not mean that all concern must cease. But that concern must not expand so far that it harms the other part of man, which is called the soul. Many people work on Sunday morning because they work for their wages during the week, while on Sunday they build something of their own.

If they were building their grave, at least I could understand it. But why are they building their grave? In reality, that is precisely what they are building—not the grave of the body, but the grave of the soul. For anyone who works on Sunday or on a feast day while the Divine Liturgy is being celebrated does something immoral, dishonorable, and accursed. It ruins everything else. It is as though you filled a jar with crystal-clear water all week, and then on Sunday poured ink and poison into it and spoiled it all. If only Satan would at least let him go to Church, attend the Divine Liturgy, receive Holy Communion, and then return to work in his garden or at his labor. But Satan does not let him

work only after worship; he makes him work from morning until evening, before the sun is even up. Then the man takes his wife and children out for a drive, to the beach, to a tavern, and so forth. And Christians do these things. Do they then expect God to put everything in order for them? People make five times the effort. They strain themselves, lose sleep, ruin their health, quickly fall ill, and so forth, because they have poured all their effort into making material things—acquiring this and that, adding, increasing, saving, endlessly grasping—because they have no hope in God. And then a single incident cuts the thread of their life, especially today, when there are so many modern ways to die, and often it is not an individual death but the death of an entire family. Every day we read of whole families, of spouses...

and parents being taken from this life in a car accident; of groups of companions and friends perishing in a plane crash. Today, it seems, one is not even to die a natural death. You are in danger from electricity, from gas, or from a car mounting the pavement and running you down. What are you not in danger from today? If once a person needed to be insured only once, now he must be insured a thousand times—not merely insured, but carrying the proof of insurance with him. In other words, he must be ready at every moment to put into practice what the beloved disciple said in the final verses of the Apocalypse. He heard Christ saying that He was coming, and Christ said to him:

“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to each according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega.” And He who bears witness to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. And John answers, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” I am ready to depart. If He appeared at this very hour and called us to give an account, which of us would be able to say, “Here are my papers; everything is in order”? What excuse could anyone offer Him? Would he say, “I had a body; I had a wife; my wife was pregnant and I could not come; I had a husband; I had people around me; I lived in the world; I had worldly interests; I had this and that and the other”? Such excuses will not be accepted. They will not pass. But have we reflected on this? The question continually arises: do we work for our daily bread, or do we not? What is this daily bread, the supersubstantial bread? The supersubstantial bread is Holy Communion, the Bread of Life. What the poor eat is their daily bread; what the birds eat, though they neither sow nor reap, is their daily bread. But Holy Communion is the supersubstantial bread, the Bread of Life. That is the bread for which we pray every day: “Give us this day our daily bread.” Yet how have we forsaken sin so that we may come forward each day and receive Holy Communion? In any case, continuing with the thoughts we have been discussing, our holy God counsels us as follows: “Therefore I say to you, do not be anxious about

your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” Take care, He says, that one part of you does not absorb all your attention. The soul matters more than the body. Let the body suffer, so that the soul may not suffer in eternity. Even if the body suffers a little in this world, it will rest in eternity. But if the soul suffers in eternity, the body will gain nothing, for the body too will be tormented in eternity together with the soul. If the soul is saved, the body too will rest and share in its joy. But if the soul is condemned to Hell, the body will be condemned with it. It is therefore both beneficial and reasonable not always to indulge the body.

You should know that Satan has arranged matters in such a way that he never leaves us alone and never makes concessions. “We own nothing; we are renting. Rent comes due month after month. Ah, if only I had one little room of my own, so that I could escape the burden of the landlord!” And God provides, one way or another, and you move into a single room. As soon as you enter the first room, you say, “Ah, if only we had one more! If a guest comes, where will he stay?” Now comes more strain for the second room. Then the second is built, but the daughter is growing up and she too needs a room. “Girls must each have a room of their own.” So a third is needed, then a fourth, and so on—more and more and more—until one day death finds you still straining after all these things, with the result that...

Do you remember that fine story told somewhere? A king, wishing to show what greed means, told a man, “Starting from this place in the morning, all the land you cover and return from will be yours. But by sunset you must be back at your starting point.” Now this was a man who lived not for eternity but for what is temporary. So he set out running: “This will be mine, and this too,” running and running. When midday came, he said, “Let me go just a little farther.” He calculated that he would make it back, because all his labor would be lost if he did not return by evening to the place from which he had started.

So he strained onward. He went farther and farther. The result was that on his return he did not manage to reach the finish. Caught in the claws of greed, he liked one piece of land and then another, all the while confident that he would return. He failed to make it back. He reached a point just outside the palace and collapsed. Not only did he fail to gain any of that land, but he died there and left everything behind. It is also said that another man was given the same promise: “All the land you walk around from sunrise until sunset will be yours.” All day long he pointed with his tongue, saying, “That much—this is all mine.” When he finally saw the sun setting, he threw himself full length upon the ground,

as goalkeepers do, stretched out his arms, and said, “This too is mine.” Then he died, and that alone was his: a grave one by eighty. He had exhausted himself all day—“This too is mine!”—only to fall down and die, and that small patch was all that belonged to him. We need wisdom and reflection. Did Christ not teach us in this way? Listen to what He says: “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much more value than they?” Your Father—your own, with the emphasis on “your.” He is not the father of the birds. God is the Creator of the birds, not their father. He is the Father of human beings—of those, certainly, who have received Christ. “Your own Father,” He says, “feeds the birds; will He then abandon you?”

And yet many of us, some to a lesser degree and some to a greater, place the center of gravity elsewhere. Let me tell you another story about this, so that you may see what man is like—and perhaps recognize that you too bear some guilt in this matter. It is said that a king once dressed as a commoner and walked through the neighborhoods of his city. He came to a house where he found a man in deep distress. “You do not seem very happy,” he said. “What is troubling you?” “Ah, do not ask, my friend.” He did not know that this was the king. “Do not ask,” he said. “My friend, I would like to know. I too am a human being. Not that I can do anything for you, but at least we can share your sorrow.”

“Well,” the man said, “I have six children, and they are hungry.” “Why are they hungry?” he asked. “Do you not work? Are you lazy?” “No,” he replied, “I am not lazy. I work.” “What is your trade? What work do you do?” “I am a fisherman.” “What does that mean? Do you sell fish, or do you catch them?” “I catch them.” “Then what is the problem?” “I catch nothing,” he said. “I catch so little that it is nowhere near enough for my family, and we suffer terribly.” The king said to him, “Tomorrow, when you go fishing, do not sell whatever you catch. Bring it to the palace.” “To the palace?” he asked. “Yes. I am the king.” He opened his garment, and when the fisherman saw his decorations beneath it, he was dumbfounded.

“Do as I tell you. Bring whatever you catch to the palace. We shall weigh it, and on the other side of the scales we shall place an equal weight of gold. From now on, whatever you catch, bring it to me, and I shall give you the same weight in gold, so that you can provide for your family.” The fisherman rejoiced and thanked him, and at once his cunning began to work. That very evening he went out and prepared all his gear, setting everything he could so as to catch as much as possible. The next day he went and hauled in his nets, his longlines, and all the rest of the fishing tackle. The result was one fish—the whole night’s labor had yielded one fish. And even that was a small, round thing,

like an eye; indeed, fishermen call it an “eye.” He was disappointed and deeply grieved. He had expected to catch five or ten okas of fish and to receive the corresponding amount of gold, enough to live on. He took the fish and went sorrowfully to the palace. “Is this what you caught?” the king asked. “This is it,” he replied. The king then said to his officials and treasurers, “Go and weigh this fish. Put it on one side of the balance and the corresponding weight of gold on the other. Since this is what he caught, and this is what I promised him, this is what I shall give him. Give him the gold and let him go.” So they took the fish to the balance, placed it on one side, and began putting gold on the other. But although they kept adding gold, the balance would not tip toward the gold.

They added more and more until the treasuries were emptied and there was no gold left. Yet the side with the fish remained weighed down. They were astonished. What could this mean? They notified the king. “Something extraordinary is happening here,” they told him. “We have put all the gold on the balance and even hung more from the outside, but the fish’s side still will not rise.” The king was bewildered. “What is happening here?” he asked. There was a great commotion, and just then a shrewd man happened to be passing outside—a poor man, but a sharp-witted one. Hearing the uproar, he asked, “What is happening in there? Do you kings have problems too?” It sounded as though they were making some wager. Someone who knew him replied, “We certainly do, and a very serious one.” “What happened?” he asked. They quickly explained the matter to him. He laughed. “What are you talking about?”

“Are you really sitting there marveling at this? I can settle it in a second.” “You can settle it?” They brought him inside. The king had turned pale, for he had given his word and could not go back on it. Someone said to the king, “This man—let us call him George—is a saddler. He often jokes, but many times he also says very clever things. He says he can solve this matter and free you from your predicament, O king.” “Tell him to come,” the king said. So the man entered. When he saw all that gold on one side and the fish resting on the other, he laughed. “The matter is simple, O king. Do you not know what the eye desires?” “What does it desire?” the king asked. “They are giving it gold,” the man said. “Bring me a little soil.” So he took a handful of soil and threw it upon the eye.

As soon as he threw soil upon the eye, the balance tipped toward it. “Only soil can satisfy the eye,” he said. “Gold can never satisfy it.” So it is with our own eyes: only when soil is cast over us will we stop looking downward at earthly things. God could have made man out of gold, but He did not. He made him from the lowly soil that we plow and tread upon, soil worth not even a penny, so that you would not set your heart on such things. Do not fix your attention on the glitter of gold or other precious things. Could He not have made man from silver or tin? Did God not think of that? He made man from what is considered the lowliest material in creation, so that man would not become preoccupied with it.

And yet this is precisely what man struggles over from morning until night. Through it he sins, in it he sins, for it he sins, and under its power he sins. This once made such a deep impression on me that I wrote a book entitled Perdition Through the Flesh: how man is lost, how the immortal soul is lost through the flesh, which was given as an instrument into the soul’s hands, while instead the soul has become an instrument in the hands of the fleshly appetites. Yet, I say, if God does not abandon him—for the man who cares only for this world and pays no attention to the next, or who thinks that through material things he can somehow steal his way into gaining something in the world to come—such a man is deceived in many ways.

He must pray that God will give him eyes to see. As we were saying about the king, do we not at least want to give more to that which is worth more—to the soul, which sustains the body? For the soul lives without the body, but the body cannot live without the soul. It returns to the elements from which it was formed; it quickly begins to decay, and in summer it must quickly be taken to the grave. The body with which we sinned is the very thing we now abandon. That for which we struggled so desperately is what we shall leave behind. Yet we do not reflect deeply enough to grasp the matter and see it as it truly is. And even if we admit that man wants to build and accomplish things, can he do so unless God blesses him? Whatever he accomplishes must have been enabled either by God or by the devil. He does not do it by himself, and many times it comes from Satan. Many people are scandalized because...

they see people who have no relationship with God making a great deal of money, acquiring many properties, living comfortably, eating well, and enjoying the world. They call such a man blessed. The world does not understand. “God gave him these good things. God gave them to him,” they say. How do you know? Do you have a letter from Him? Did He say, “I gave these things to him”? Perhaps God has abandoned that man. Do you know how just God is? There was once a woman whose husband was a drunkard and would return home at three or four in the morning. She always had the table laid for him. He never left her any money for food; he spent it all with his friends at the tavern. She lived on her own daily wages,

yet she always prepared a little plate for him—perhaps an egg, a little cheese, a small meat patty, or something else, together with a glass of wine. Whenever he came home drunk and she heard him downstairs, she would go down, take him by the arm, help him upstairs, sit him down, and set the food before him. Another friend who drank with him would return home drunk to find his wife waiting behind the door with a club. She would split his head open with it and beat him. The next day, when he had sobered up, his friend would see him with his head bandaged and say, “Ah, I do not have troubles like that. My wife looks after me.” “Is that really true?” the other man asked. “We drink together, spend all our money here, and your wife still looks after you?”

“I am telling you, my wife looks after me.” The other man could not believe it. One night they stayed out especially late, and the man who was usually beaten was afraid to go home. “I cannot go home now,” he said. “I shall be beaten again.” “Come to my house,” his friend said. “To your house? Mistress George will throw us both down the stairs!”—for the husband’s name was George. “She will not do anything to us,” George said. “Why not?” “She needs us,” he replied drunkenly. “What if we break something?” “Just come with me.” So they went and knocked on the door. At once she called, “My dear George!” “I have also brought my friend Nick,” he said. “Thank you so much, my dear George, for giving me the opportunity to meet your friend Mr. Nick. You have told me so many good things about him, but never before gave me the chance to meet him.” The other man listened in amazement. So it was all true, exactly as George had said, though he had never believed him. She took them both by the arm, helped them upstairs, and seated them at a small table. She immediately brought another glass, poured them some wine, and set out a little cheese, some bread, and whatever else she had.

“I have these things for George’s sake, but also for your own.” The man was dumbfounded. “I do not want anything, Mistress George,” he said. “I want nothing. My head has cleared. There is only one thing I want to ask you. I know your husband well. We have never brought any money home. You can see what my own wife has done to my head. Yet here everything is just as George told me for all these years, though I never believed him. Where do you find the strength to care for him and show him such love? Where do you find that strength?” “Is that what troubles you, Mr. Nick?” she asked. “Tell me that,” he said, “and I could die this very moment content.” “Then listen, my dear Mr. Nick. I do not know whether George has told you, but I married him out of love. George and I came together because we loved one another. I loved George then, and I still love him now.

“Because I know that, as a drunkard, he will be condemned—for he stands outside the Kingdom, and drunkards shall not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven—I try to make his life here as pleasant as possible, since I see and know that he will suffer in eternity.” And this is what she did. If an ordinary person—or rather, a woman, a Mistress George—can act this way, then what is Christ’s attitude when He sees that we are going to suffer in eternity? “Let them enjoy themselves here, since they will suffer in eternity.” God does not become poor; God does not become poor. He is rich. Nor is God in haste. For Him a thousand years are as one day. Christ came into the world two thousand years ago, and to Him only two days have passed. We are the wretched ones. He desires all people to turn back. What then...?

Who told you that God gave him those things? Let me take you to the scene in the Book of Job. Satan received permission to strike Job’s family, his children, his wife, his servants, and all his possessions. He was able to kill them all. Why did he not kill Job’s wife? How righteous must she have appeared! What would the world have said when people learned of the destruction of Job’s household? His children were gone, his servants had been wiped out, but Job’s wife remained. “She must be a saintly woman; she must have an angel watching over her, some saint protecting her. See how God protects good people,” the world would have said. Yet it was the devil who had preserved her.

He preserved her so that he could later use her against Job, sending her to say, “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die.” It was the devil who had spared her. Man, never thrust your nose into God’s judgments. Does God commit injustice? Is God unjust? Perhaps a man’s wealth comes from his own sweat; perhaps it comes from Satan. Whatever has not been gathered with God’s blessing, at the proper hour, on the proper day, and in the proper way, is gathered by the devil only to be scattered by him.

“Gathered by the wind, scattered by the devil,” as the simple folk saying puts it. And the Gospel says in the twelfth chapter of Matthew, “He who does not gather with Me scatters.” Though it seems that a man is gathering, he is really scattering. Those things will leave him; they will be lost, they will be lost. The other day I was returning from the countryside and passed through Peristeri. The entire district of Peristeri once belonged to one man. The estate was so large that he had to ride around it on horseback; he could not cover it all on foot. Yet he died in utter poverty, and his son, who squandered everything, is a pauper today. The whole district had belonged to them. Do you understand? It happened because he never placed his trust in God. Whatever you build, let it be blessed; let it bear God’s seal. Better to have less that is honorable; better to have less that is truly Christian.

Take this to heart, because Satan is a skilled craftsman, and he steals our time. You can see it yourselves: after straining all day long, when you go to pray, your legs suddenly give way. Then you become drowsy; then your back begins to ache. And all this over fifteen minutes of prayer. Yet when the prayer is finished, you may sit for another two or three hours gossiping on the telephone, or washing and putting the kitchen in order. But when the time comes to do something for your soul, a dark cloud immediately descends upon you. These things require struggle; they require real effort. If a man does not succeed in understanding this, he will be deceived. But when he realizes that he is destined for the Kingdom of God—as we have discussed before, so I shall not repeat it—and that he must become a royal child in order to inherit a kingdom, then he will understand the command: “Do not be anxious; but seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.”

“And all these things shall be added unto you.” A man will fail if he does not think in this way. If he remembers that he is a royal child—or rather, that he must become one in order to inherit the Kingdom—he will think of the Church; he will think of Holy Communion, through which he becomes a royal child; he will think of Christ, the royal Son; he will think of the Most Holy Theotokos, who is the Queen; he will think of the Saints, who are princes; and he will think of Christ, who is King. Then he will labor more for his soul and less for his body. Without neglecting the care of the body, then, let us give more water to our soul for as long as Christ allows us to live in this world. These are the things I thought could be said—though, of course, the subject can never be exhausted—about these words by which Christ reminds man how he should think: that his life is fleeting.

He does not know whether he will still be here one second from now, and so he must always be ready. Together with you, then, I pray to Christ that these words may bring forth some good fruit. Amen.

Ήθελα να έλεγα κάτι που θα είχε ηθική διδασκαλία και δογματική θα έχει. Θα ήθελα να το δανειστώ από τα γεγονότα της χθεσινής ημέρας, που είναι παρμένα από τον Ευαγγελικό Νόμο. Ο Ευαγγελικός Νόμος, όπως έχουμε πει και άλλοτε, είναι γραμμένος στο 5ο, στο 6ο και στο 7ο κεφάλαιο του Ματθαίου. Εκεί υπάρχει όλη η ψιλοδουλειά που κανείς πρέπει να προσέξει και να εφαρμόσει, προκειμένου να ολοκληρώσει την ψυχή του, να μην την αφήσει απλώς «πιστεύω». Ναι, πιστεύεις. Μα τι πράττεις;

Δέκα χρόνια και τραβήγματα από εδώ και από εκεί και, σε πέντε ημέρες, μόλις τους βάλουν στεφάνι, χωρίζουν. Λες και δεν γνωριστήκανε. Και δεν γνωριστήκανε ποτέ τους, δεν ειδωθήκανε σε πέντε μέρες. Και εκείνοι οι ίδιοι και εκείνοι που παρευρέθησαν δεν έκαναν έναν σταυρό να πούνε: «Χριστέ μου, στερέωσε αυτό το ζευγάρι, γιατί ο Σατανάς, ο εχθρός αυτών των θεσμών, θα βαλθεί να τον διαλύσει». Θέλουμε να μεταφέρουμε, λοιπόν, εμείς τον κόσμο μας στην Εκκλησία. Δεν γνωρίζετε: ο κόσμος εκεί πέρα μέσα, ή είστε στο Χόλιγουντ ή είσαι σε εκκλησία ορθοδόξων σήμερα, σε βαφτίσια, παραδείγματος χάριν, ή σε γάμο, είναι ένα και το αυτό. Μα μπορεί η κοσμικότητα αυτή να μπει μέσα στον χώρο αυτόν; Θέλεις να κάνεις αυτά, δεν κρατάς τουλάχιστον τα προσχήματα; Δεν έχεις τουαλέτα που πηγαίνεις στην αγορά; Δεν έχεις τουαλέτα που βγαίνεις και πηγαίνεις στον περίπατο; Δεν έχεις ενδυμασία που πας στο μπάνιο;

Φοβούμεθα και τον κόσμο και ενεργούμε σύμφωνα με τον κόσμο. Έρχεται μια επίσκεψη, ένας άνθρωπος κατ’ αυτάς, έχουμε ξένο. Δεν θα νηστέψουμε, αλλά τώρα έχουμε ξένο. Δηλαδή ο ξένος έρχεται να διώξει τον Χριστό, να καθίσει αυτός; Δεν τον διώχνεις τον ξένο αυτόν; Δεν σας χρειάζεται αυτός ο ξένος. Κρατήστε τον άλλο Ξένο, εκείνον που ψάλλουν τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή, που έλεγαν οι άλλοι: «Δος μοι τούτον τον ξένον». Κράτησε αυτόν και διώξε τον άλλον. Οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είναι, εάν έρθει να σου ανατρέψει τη σειρά σου, να σου προσβάλει την πίστη σου ή εσύ να προδώσεις την πίστη σου, αυτός ο ξένος δεν σου χρειάζεται. Οποιοσδήποτε κι αν είναι. Μα μάνα σου, μα πατέρας σου, μα αδελφός σου, που τον βλέπεις έπειτα από διακόσια χρόνια. Εμείς τα συμβιβάζουμε. «Εμείς, βέβαια, μαγειρέψαμε αυτό, αλλά εμείς δεν φάγαμε». Σοβαρά! Και μαγείρεψες αυτό; Γιατί τους μαγειρέψαμε, να μη δυσαρεστηθούν; Μην τους χάσουμε πελάτες; Γιατί τους μαγειρέψαμε;

τη θυσία, προσφέρει την προσευχή, προσφέρει τη γονυκλισία, προσφέρει την υπηρεσία στον άλλον, προσφέρει ελεημοσύνη, προσφέρει πάσης φύσεως αγαθοεργία διά του σώματος. Και αγιάζεται και αυτό το σώμα και μένει και αυτό μαζί με το πνεύμα στην αιωνιότητα. Πόσα σώματα δεν είναι άγια και μοσχοβολούν και ευωδιάζουν μέχρι σήμερα, διότι αγωνίστηκαν μαζί με την ψυχή. Δεν θέλω να πω, λοιπόν, ότι δεν θα ενδιαφερθούμε για το σώμα. Θα το κλείσουμε έξω και θα πούμε ότι είμαστε μόνο πνευματικοί άνθρωποι; Όχι. Γι’ αυτό πάντοτε χρειάζεται διάκριση. Αλλά να μη μας απορροφήσει, όπως συμβαίνει σήμερα στους ανθρώπους. Είναι απορροφημένοι στα υλικά πράγματα. Το πώς θα αποκτήσουν δικά τους. Κακό είναι να αποκτήσει κάτι κανείς;

πατάει κάτω, κάνει τον παλικαρά. Όταν τον πάρει η απόχη του μπόγια και τον σηκώσει και δεν πατάει κάτω, αρχίζει να του φεύγει το κουράγιο. Δεν ξέρω αν έχετε τύχει ποτέ μπροστά που ο μπόγιας τον αρπάζει με την απόχη και τον σηκώνει επάνω, το σκύλο, και τον παίρνει. Το θηρίο που σου έκανε και εγονάτιζαν τα γόνατά σου, όταν το πήρε η απόχη και το σήκωσε, δεν πατάει κάτω στη γη, νιώθει ότι αιωρείται, δεν στέκεται στον εαυτό του, αρχίζει και χάνει το κουράγιο. Έτσι είναι ο άνθρωπος. Αλλά δυστυχώς δεν το πιστεύει αυτό, νομίζει ότι πατάει. Πατάει στο πορτοφόλι του, πατάει στο διαμέρισμά του, πατάει στο ακίνητό του, πατάει στα χρεόγραφά του, πατάει στην εξυπνάδα του, πατάει στην πολιτική του, πατάει. Ούτε ένα δεν πατάει. Αυτή τη στιγμή ο Χριστός σου λέει: «Έλα για λογαριασμό». Πού πατάει;

Πατάει, παιδί μου; Πού πατάει; Πού πατάει ο Ωνάσης; Γιατί πάτε μακριά; Ποιος δεν τον εζήλεψε; Ποιος δεν θα ήθελε τη δόξα του και τα χρήματά του; Τα άφησε. Και πού θέλει, όχι, και πού τον εκλάψανε. Πάμε λοιπόν. Γιατί δεν φιλοσοφούμε;

όπως πέφτουν οι τερματοφύλακες, και τεντώνει και τα χέρια του. Λέγει: «Και αυτό δικό μου». Και εκεί πέθανε και ήταν μόνο αυτό δικό του. Βγήκε η ψυχή του όλη μέρα, βγήκε η ψυχή του, «και αυτό είναι δικό μου», και πέφτει και πεθαίνει και ήταν μόνο αυτό δικό του, ένα επί ογδόντα. Χρειάζεται φιλοσοφία. Δεν τα έχει πει έτσι ο Χριστός; Για ακούστε εδώ τι λέει: «Εμβλέψατε», λέει, «εις τα πετεινά του ουρανού, ότι ου σπείρουσιν ουδέ θερίζουσιν, ουδέ συνάγουσιν εις αποθήκας, και ο Πατήρ υμών ο ουράνιος τρέφει αυτά. Ουχ υμείς μάλλον διαφέρετε αυτών;» Ο Πατήρ υμών, ο δικός σας, με ύψιλον το «υμών». Όχι ο πατέρας των πουλιών. Ο Θεός είναι δημιουργός των πουλιών. Δεν είναι πατέρας των πουλιών, των ανθρώπων είναι πατέρας, βεβαίως όσων δέχτηκαν τον Χριστό. Ο πατέρας ο δικός σας, λέει, τρέφει τα πουλιά και εσάς θα αφήσει;

«Διότι ξέρω, σαν μέθυσος, ότι θα κολαστεί, γιατί είναι έξω· οι μέθυσοι Βασιλεία των Ουρανών ου κληρονομήσουσι. Κοιτάζω να του κάνω όσο μπορώ πιο ευχάριστη τη ζωή του εδώ, διότι βλέπω και ξέρω ότι θα κολάζεται στην αιωνιότητα». Και το έκανε αυτό. Αν ένας λοιπόν, λέγω, μάλλον μία, μία κυρά Γιώργαινα, κάνει αυτό, ο Χριστός πώς στέκεται όταν βλέπει ότι θα κολαζόμαστε στην αιωνιότητα; Ας απολαύσει εδώ, εφόσον θα κολαζόμαστε στην αιωνιότητα. Δεν φτωχαίνει ο Θεός, δεν φτωχαίνει ο Θεός, είναι πλούσιος. Ούτε βιάζεται ο Θεός. Χίλια χρόνια, μία μέρα. Έχει δυο χιλιάδες χρόνια που ήρθε ο Χριστός στον κόσμο, δύο μέρες έχουνε περάσει. Εμείς είμαστε δυστυχείς. Θέλει όλους τους ανθρώπους να επιστρέψουν πίσω. Όλος τι;
