Summary

The lecture surveys biblical resurrections from Elijah and Elisha through Christ’s raising of the widow of Nain’s son, Jairus’s daughter, and Lazarus. The lecture identifies Christ’s liberation of the faithful dead on Holy Saturday as the First Resurrection and as the first foundation of the Church. The faithful are urged to reject mediums and spiritual deception, trust God’s just judgment of every person, and concentrate on faithfully following the path to salvation revealed by Christ.

I repeat these last words so that we may reconnect with yesterday’s subject. The Resurrection of our Christ was not the first resurrection. The first resurrection ever seen beneath the sun was performed by the Prophet Elijah for the son of the poor widow who had received him into her home—the widow of Zarephath in Sidon—as we read in the Old Testament, in 1 Kings 17. The second resurrection in order was performed by the successor of the Prophet Elijah, the Prophet Elisha. He, in turn, raised the son of the Shunammite woman, as we read in 2 Kings, chapter 4. The third resurrection in the Old Testament was brought about by the holy relics of the Prophet Elisha, as we read in 2 Kings 13:20. These are the three resurrections found in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the first resurrection performed by our Lord was that of the son of the widow of Nain, as we read in Luke, chapter 7. The second resurrection in the New Testament, and the fifth overall, was when our Christ raised the daughter of Jairus.

We read of this in Luke, chapter 8. The third resurrection He performed in the New Testament, and the sixth overall, was the raising of Lazarus, which, as you know, we read about in John, chapter 11. These, then, are six resurrections: three in the Old Testament and three in the New. The seventh resurrection overall, and the fourth in the New Testament,

was the resurrection that occurred when our Christ said, “It is finished,” upon the Cross. Many tombs were opened, and many of the departed saints were raised and appeared in the Holy City after His Resurrection. That is, they were raised on Friday afternoon and entered the Holy City on Sunday, because Saturday was the day of rest.

The eighth in order is the Resurrection of our Christ. But the resurrections did not end there. We read in the Acts of the Apostles that Peter raised Tabitha, a Christian woman who had performed many good works, and restored her to the people to whom she had shown mercy. This is recorded in chapter 9 of Acts. The Apostle Paul also raised the young man Eutychus. An all-night vigil was being held one evening on the third floor, and Paul’s sermon went on for a long time—about three hours. It seems that a mother had brought her child with her, and the boy fell asleep at the window without anyone noticing.

He fell from the window onto the stone pavement and was killed. Paul went downstairs and raised the boy. We read this in chapter 20 of Acts. These resurrections are recorded in Holy Scripture, but, as I said at the end yesterday, they are not the only ones. Resurrections have also occurred beyond those recorded in the New Testament. Saint Euthymios the Great performed a resurrection; Saint John the Theologian performed ninety-four resurrections; Saint Arsenios the Great performed a resurrection; Saint Nektarios performed two resurrections; and others who performed resurrections can also be found in Holy Scripture.

This is a supplement to what we discussed and connected yesterday: the Crucifixion of our Christ, His burial, and His Resurrection as genuine events that truly took place and prove that Christ really rose—that His body was not stolen. Our Christ rose after first raising others. I do not know whether you have noticed that “Christ is risen” says, “Christ is risen from the dead,” because by His death He trampled down death: “trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life.” Therefore, He bestowed life upon those who were in Hades.

When He rose, He gave life to others and raised them, and then He Himself rose. The words “Christ is risen” are not about us. “Christ is risen” concerns those who were in the tomb. Then what is for us, someone may ask? It is this: “Jesus, having risen from the tomb as He foretold, has given us eternal life and great mercy.” That is for us. The other proclamation concerns those who were in Hades. I do not know whether you realize that the same proclamations preserved for us here on earth were also preserved for those who were below. All human beings—all the souls of those who have been born and died,

those now living, and those who will be born until the consummation of the age—all these souls will be judged by Christ: those who lived before Christ, those who lived in the days of Christ, and those who will be born after Christ until the consummation of the age. All will have Christ as their Judge. From the creation of the world and of man until Christ came into the world, 5,508 years had passed. Imagine how many people had died, how many had departed without knowing about Christ. Even the prophets who wrote and spoke about Christ were no longer here; they had died. Isaiah died 850 years before Christ.

Daniel died 650 years before Christ, Amos 800 years before Christ, Zechariah 900 years before Christ, and so forth; Moses died 1,500 years before Christ, and Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob 1,800 years before Christ. What was to become of them? What did God do? You know that here on earth He sent John, who preached and said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” And again: “He who comes after me has come to be before me.” The One who will come after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy even to untie, “has come to be before me.” He is not merely the son of Mary, six months younger than I am. No. He is also the Son of God, and He is greater than I am. That is why John said, “He who comes after me has come to be before me.”

John preached repentance to the people in His name and called them to repent. Then this same John descended into Hades and preached repentance to the spirits in prison. When Herod cut off his head, do you think this happened simply because Herod was bold?

“It came about by divine dispensation,” the Church says on August 29. Concerning the beheading of the honorable head of the Forerunner, the Church says, “It came about by divine dispensation.” By divine dispensation—why? “So that he might proclaim even to those in Hades God manifested in the flesh, who takes away the sin of the world.” Just as John spoke here in body and soul

to human beings, so he descended into Hades and spoke there to the spirits with his soul, with his spirit. He proclaimed: “Wait for Him, for He will come. This Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, will be slain, and He will come.” Therefore, just as John preached here and Christ came, so John also preached in Hades. Christ then went there and preached as well, and all who received Christ in faith He gave life to and took with Him. Some people who do not understand say, “Who would hear that he could leave Hell and enter Paradise and refuse? Why do you say only those who believed in Him? But did Hell and Paradise exist before Christ?” No, they did not.

There was one place to which both the righteous and the unrighteous went. That is why our Christ descended “into the lower parts.” Abraham was there, John was there, and all those beloved by Christ were there. They all went into the same place. There was no distinction, with refreshment here and fire there, or cold here and fire there. All were in Hades. Consequently, they were all in the same condition. For if Hell and Paradise had already existed then, who would not have wanted to leave one place and go to the other? Everyone would have listened to Him. They would have received Him out of necessity, not out of love, humility, or faith, but from necessity, simply to escape suffering and go somewhere better. This is why God had arranged matters in this way.

There was no Hell and Paradise; there was Hades. When Christ descended and preached there, where John had already preached before Him, some believed and some did not. He gave life to those who believed, and when He departed, He took them with Him into Paradise, with the thief going first as their leader. The thief entered first. This is why we have what is called the First Resurrection. It is neither the first Resurrection of Christ nor our own first resurrection. It is the First Resurrection of the dead, which Christ brought about among the dead, thereby laying the foundations of the Church. The foundations of the Church were not laid at Pentecost.

Did Peter lay them when he preached and three thousand people were baptized? No. Christ laid the foundations on Holy Saturday in Hades. Peter and the other Apostles, all the preachers throughout the ages, and even I as I speak at this very hour, are adding to the foundations Christ laid during the thirty-three hours He spent in Hades. Our Christ remained in Hades for thirty-three hours, exactly as many hours as the years He remained on earth. From three o’clock on Friday afternoon until midnight on the night of the Resurrection, from Saturday into Sunday, there are exactly thirty-three hours. This, then, is what is known among us as the First Resurrection. The resurrection took place, it says.

Some people, as you know, relax the fast on that day, certainly out of ignorance. Yet Holy Saturday, as I told you one evening when we were speaking during Holy Week, is an even more mournful day than Great Friday. This is why the theology both of our grandmothers and of the Church says, “The fast is relaxed on every Saturday except Holy Saturday.” For on Holy Saturday we do not have Christ with us. On Great Friday we still have Him, even though He is dead. On Holy Saturday we do not have Him. Here the words Christ spoke are fulfilled: “The days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from us.” They will take the Bridegroom from you.

“Then you will mourn.” When was the Bridegroom taken from us? On Holy Saturday. On Friday we had Him with us, though dead, and on Sunday we had Him alive again. When was He absent? Only on Holy Saturday. This is why Holy Saturday is the most mournful day of the entire year, and the fast is not relaxed. It has nothing to do with the First Resurrection. The First Resurrection is the resurrection Christ granted to those who were dead and heard His preaching. If you wish to read about this and have no other books, read your Gospel and the catholic epistle of Peter, chapter 4. There you will find that Christ went into Hades and preached to the spirits in prison—to those imprisoned in Hades. They were prisoners; they could not go wherever they wished, nor can the departed go wherever they wish now.

Let me take this opportunity to warn you: beware of those mediums and others who tell you, “Come and speak with your father, your sister, or your child.” You will be speaking with the devil; that is absolutely certain. Satan assumes the role of the departed person. Your money is thrown away for nothing, and at the same time your soul is condemned. For God forbid that a soul should be able to leave or go wherever it wishes. How could that be possible? After all, the Lord told us in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, as you remember: “Even if we wish to come from there, we cannot; and even if you wish to cross over from here, you cannot.” Therefore, there is a fixed state beyond the grave. Who would remain in Hell if he could simply leave? Everyone would depart for Paradise. But how could they enter Paradise in that way? These are things people need to know, so that they may understand how matters truly stand and not be led astray.

According to the Holy Apostles, the Resurrection took place during the night from Saturday to Sunday. In the Apostolic Constitutions there is a specific command from the Holy Apostles that the fast is to be ended. Since it commands that the fast be ended, this means that something joyful had occurred. We ceased mourning; we ceased fasting. I also want you to know this: the day Christ rose is so important, as we said last night, that we commemorate it for forty full days. All these days are joyful. “Christ is risen” is proclaimed; kneeling is forbidden; fasting is forbidden; and the faithful are encouraged to receive Holy Communion continually, every day.

These are joyful days. The week through which we are now passing is Bright Week. According to Canon 66 of the Sixth Ecumenical Council, people should come forward to receive Holy Communion every day, regardless of fasting, provided, of course, that they have not fallen into sin. In other words, those who went to Holy Confession and received Holy Communion on Great Thursday, Holy Saturday, or Pascha, with the blessing of their spiritual father, may come forward throughout the entire week, regardless of what they eat, provided they have not fallen into sin, because it is Pascha. You also know the folk theology, do you not? “Three days for the Nativity, three for Theophany, and six for the Resurrection.” The Resurrection is celebrated for six days. Indeed, there is a type—a prophetic foreshadowing—in the Old Testament: during their Passover, the Jews also ate unleavened bread for six days.

They ate the Passover and celebrated. That Passover was replaced by our Pascha. That lamb, the typological lamb, was replaced by the spiritual Lamb, the true Lamb of God, slain from the foundation of the world. And even on every Wednesday after Thomas Sunday, for as long as “Christ is risen” is sung, oil is permitted. Oil is permitted on Wednesdays, because after Pentecost we shall fast on Wednesdays and Fridays without oil. But during these days, while the joyful proclamation that Christ is risen is still heard, oil is permitted. Kneeling is forbidden during these days, just as it is forbidden on Sundays, because the Resurrection is a joyful event. There are eight Canons of the Church that forbid kneeling.

People who have not studied these matters deeply, and who remain attached to a merely formal kind of Christianity, cannot break free from this habit. Yet I have seen that some progress has been made here as well. On the Monday feast of Saint George, I was in Montreal. They have a church dedicated to Saint George there. None of the other churches in Montreal celebrated the Divine Liturgy that day. All the priests, together with His Grace the bishop, gathered in that one church. They all celebrated Saint George together—at Vespers, at Matins, and at the Divine Liturgy the following day. My soul rejoiced when, on Bright Monday, I saw three Holy Chalices brought out to give Holy Communion to the people. His Grace stood in the middle holding a very large Chalice and giving Holy Communion.

Two priests stood on either side of him, also giving Holy Communion to the people. But the people remain in deep darkness concerning these matters; they are not interested. Perhaps they have not even been informed. Yet there are many other things about which no one informs us, and still we search for them ourselves and discover them. These are things everyone ought to know, because without Holy Communion a person can do nothing. Now I want to speak about another event connected with our Resurrection, one that makes it more radiant and vivid as the one true Resurrection. This event takes place in the Holy Land every Holy Saturday. It is the Holy Fire, which Christ grants each year only to the Orthodox.

It is given at midday on Saturday, during a special service. The Resurrection, as you know, is celebrated at midnight. We are not there beside the All-Holy Tomb, but within the altar there is what is called the vigil lamp that never goes out, which represents Christ. We extinguish all the other lights, and the priest or hierarch goes and takes light from that lamp. He then comes out and says to the faithful, “Come, receive the light”—come and receive light—“from the Light that knows no evening,” from a Light that never sets. Christ is a Light that is never extinguished, whether through lack of oil or through some fault. He is “the true Light, which gives light to every man coming into the world.” And so we go to receive light from the Light—spiritual light. There, then...

Christ has been giving this light from His All-Holy Tomb for two thousand years. A service is held, and during that service our Patriarch—or the Patriarch’s representative, one of the bishops—enters the Holy Edicule in the presence of the Armenian Patriarch. The Patriarch enters almost naked, wearing only his undergarments and a single inner cassock. The Tomb and the Edicule have already been searched beforehand. They are sealed on the previous day and guarded by Jewish and Arab police officers.

The next day, the binding placed all around it is cut, the seal on the Tomb is opened, and the Patriarch enters. Kings and dignitaries are present, along with the leading figures of the Jewish government and society. The leading Arab figures are also present. All the consuls, the great and the small alike, are there. They wait in silence before the miracle that is about to occur. Within a few minutes, the Patriarch or his representative comes out carrying two long bundles of white candles, thirty-three candles in each hand. In these two bundles he bears the light he received over the All-Holy Tomb. There is a special prayer—I was not familiar with it, and I do not have it with me to read to you. As he kneels inside and reads this prayer in the presence of the Armenian Patriarch, something like blue bubbles appears over the All-Holy Tomb...

They are like blue bubbles. He gathers them with a piece of cotton, and as they are gathered together, they become light. If you try to extinguish it, it does not go out, nor does it burn you. For quite some time, you can pass it over your beard and your hands and play with it without being burned. Then, in some manner, it takes on its ordinary properties and becomes fire. It is carried to the ends of the earth by pilgrims traveling by air, and so forth. This light, which only the Orthodox Patriarch receives, is passed out through two openings. Before one reaches the Tomb itself, there is a circular hall. In its center stands something like a chalice-shaped pedestal, similar to the font at the Life-Giving Spring. On top of it there is...

A slab of marble—a stone from the stone that had been at Christ’s Tomb—which now serves as the Holy Altar. Every night, when the Divine Liturgy is celebrated at the All-Holy Tomb, the Prothesis is inside the All-Holy Tomb, while this stone serves as the Holy Altar. In that hall there are two large openings in the wall, passing right through it to the outside. They are about eighty centimeters long and quite wide, one on each side, while the door is in front, with the people waiting outside. Through these two openings, the Patriarch gives fire to the nations; he gives light to the nations. From this fire, from this flame, from this light of the Resurrection, the Armenians receive, the Copts receive...

The Syrians and the Abyssinians also receive it. The Papists do not. They do not acknowledge the light of the Resurrection. Although they are present there and celebrate their services over the All-Holy Tomb every day after us, they never receive it; they light their candles themselves with matches. The Protestants do not go near the place at all. Outside Jerusalem, on a small hill, they have constructed a tomb of their own. After two thousand years, they supposedly discovered where Christ had been buried, and they even have a Golgotha of their own there. Through this light, Christ shows us which faith is true. There is a very vivid incident involving the Armenians, and it is not the only one. On four occasions they have found themselves in difficulty over this matter, because many times they tried to prevent the Orthodox...

From receiving the light, yet Christ gives the light to no one else. This proves that ours is the authentic faith, and we must take this seriously. As I told you on another evening—and even showed you on a slide—to enter the Church of the Resurrection today, one must pass through a single doorway, which serves as both the entrance and the exit. There is no other door.

On each side of this doorway there are three columns. In 1574, the Armenian Patriarch paid the police and the authorities there, who were Muslim, to lock our Patriarch outside, while he himself went in to receive the light of the Resurrection. When our Patriarch came down with his procession and reached the church, he found the doors shut. He remained outside in the holy courtyard, before the holy door, weeping and lamenting. As he stood there praying and pleading...

With God—believing that God had perhaps allowed this because of his sins—a tremendous noise was suddenly heard to his left, and the middle column split open. Light came forth from it. The Patriarch received the light there and distributed it to his people outside. That column remains to this day. It is blackened, and any Orthodox Christian who is counted worthy to reach that place, who knows what the fissure is and venerates it, encounters the fragrance of the All-Holy Tomb—even though the column is exposed to rain, dust, and air, and is dirtied by various people who go and sit upon it without knowing what it is. In that place...

There is the fragrance of the All-Holy Tomb. I am an eyewitness; this happened to me. Many years earlier, someone had brought me a photograph and said, “Mr. Panagopoulos, this is what happens there.” I had not yet visited the place. Then, five years ago, when I was counted worthy to go there, I was being pressed along with the crowd as I tried to pass through the doorway. Without realizing it, I found myself beside that column. The moment my eye caught sight of it, my knees bent automatically. I remembered the photograph I had in my pocket, though it had not occurred to me to investigate the matter. I immediately understood that this was the column, and I made the sign of the Cross. I had not even entered the church yet. I had venerated neither the Deposition from the Cross, nor the All-Holy Tomb, nor Golgotha—nothing. This was the first thing I encountered, and it gave off a fragrance as though perfume had just been poured upon it.

Who would perfume the columns there, and who would even care to do so? The guards are Turkish and Jewish. Who would concern himself with such things? Everything is in foreign hands; it is not in our hands. We have one guardian on Golgotha and one below at the All-Holy Tomb. Everything else inside is in foreign hands—all of it. Who would care to do such a thing? This also proves that Christ did not give them the light even then. There are four such incidents altogether; this is only one of them. On another occasion, when they again placed obstacles before the Orthodox, the light appeared at the Praetorium, about a thousand meters away in a straight line. To reach the Praetorium, you descend along the paved street and pass through the marketplaces—a distance of about a thousand meters. The light appeared there. Such is the obstinacy of men: they want to create denominations and religions. But there is only one true faith.

When they go to celebrate the Resurrection at night, they already have the light from Saturday at midday. There is not, of course, a second Holy Fire given there. When they proclaim, “Christ is risen,” and “Glory to the Holy, Consubstantial, and Undivided Trinity,” the light they use is the light they have kept since midday. Here there is another lesson: God is not bound by hours. The Resurrection took place at night, so one might suppose that the light ought to appear at night; yet He gives it during the day. For however many generations people have celebrated this service of receiving the Holy Fire, He has given it during the day. God is not concerned with the exact hours over which we sometimes quarrel so fiercely. God is eternal. Every person, then, ought to know this and understand why we plead, “Gentlemen, return; gentlemen, take heed,” since the Author of the faith Himself, in this sense, shows favor toward the Orthodox.

Who are we to imagine that we are more compassionate than the Lover of mankind, or more royal than the King? Since Christ does not give them the light, He must have a reason for not doing so. Are we, then, going to correct Christ? Are we going to force the matter at all costs? What are we to do—sell the truth? How could we, when Christ cannot be bought, when Christ Himself stands against falsehood and says, “Here it is; this is the truth”? Do not find this strange, and let us not bring our own human reasoning into the matters of faith and the Church. These matters are in Christ’s hands. Christ says, “Fear not, little flock.” I often hear people ask, “What will happen to the others? What will happen to the little Muslims? What will happen to the little Catholics?” Very well—look to what will happen to you, and leave them to God. God will not deal unjustly with anyone.

He did not tell us what He will do with them. He told us what we must do to be saved. That is the issue, and that is what He will ask you about. Will He ask you what He should do with the Turkish children, the Catholic children, or the Protestant children? What He does with them is His concern. But He told you what you must do. He showed you, guarded you, and helped you—not only through faith but also through knowledge—so that you might see clearly how matters stand. Therefore, I say that during these days the most serious subject of all is the Resurrection of Christ. Christ is the one Person who has stirred the whole world. If only one could read how the historians recorded the events of those days, and what they wrote about the events surrounding Christ...

And about what happened, one could learn many things. Generally speaking, we are not well read. We devour certain magazines and newspapers from cover to cover, but we do not devote ourselves nearly as much to the true things—the things that save and edify a person. I have with me some material from manuscripts I found on the Holy Mountain, which were later published as a book. I found correspondence between Pilate and Caesar. You know, Caesar had not instructed Pilate beforehand about how he should conduct himself in this grave matter. Pilate was carried away by the Jews and gave in to them, although God had warned him through his wife not to become involved. His wife told him, “Take care, for I suffered greatly in a dream tonight because of this man.” Pilate did not heed the warning. Afterward, however, he wrote a report to Caesar. Caesar was his superior, for Pilate represented the Roman occupation there, and he reported these events to him. Unfortunately for Pilate, Caesar had already learned of them before the report arrived, because after these events Mary Magdalene departed and went to Caesar, where she denounced Pilate and the others and told him what had taken place. Caesar knew what had happened, but he had not yet received an official account...

From one of his own officials. Listen, then, to what Pilate writes in this report to Caesar: “Pontius Pilate, governor of the eastern province, to the grain-sustaining, most fearsome and mighty sovereign Tiberius Caesar, my own lord and king: greetings. With this illustrious pen I wish to report to you the audacious and inhuman event that has taken place here, and to relate to you in full detail, most excellent ruler, all the circumstances of this affair—things so fearful and extraordinary that their like has never been heard of since the beginning of the age.

“Pontius Pilate, governor of the eastern province, to Tiberius Caesar, provider of grain, most fearsome and greatest sovereign, my own lord and king: greetings. With this most illustrious pen I wish to report to you the audacious and inhuman event that has taken place here, and to relate to you in full detail, most excellent ruler, all the circumstances of this affair—things so fearful and extraordinary that their like has never been heard of since the beginning of the age.”

“Such things have never been done anywhere in the world. We have seen them with our own eyes, and fear and trembling have seized both my soul and my body, most mighty king.” He says that the things they witnessed in those days had never happened before anywhere in the world, and that fear gripped his soul and body. “At the present time, when the Jewish feast of Passover, called the Feast of Unleavened Bread, was approaching, the whole multitude of the Jews in this city of Jerusalem delivered to me a certain man called Jesus, bringing many charges against Him, though their accusations were false.” They were not telling the truth; everything they said was a lie.

The ungrateful murderers! “Although they made many accusations against Him, they could find no definite crime in Him. One of their charges was that He did not observe the Sabbath.” This was one of the accusations they brought against Him: that He did not honor the Sabbath. “But this too was untrue, for they spoke out of envy. On that day”—that is, on the Sabbath—“He performed many good works, healings, and awesome miracles, of which I myself am a witness. With a single word He healed the blind, the lame, lepers, paralytics, and those possessed by demons. He raised the dead as though from sleep.”

“And with a single word He raised a man named Lazarus, who had been dead four days, calling him by name”—as when He said, “Lazarus, come forth”—“although after four days his body had been corrupted by worms and had decayed, and the stench of his bones poured forth as he lay in the tomb. Having raised him, He commanded him to rise and go on his way. He bore not even the slightest sign of having been dead,” though he had been dead for four days. “Instead, he came out of the tomb like a bridegroom from his chamber, filled with fragrance in place of the stench that had been there only moments before. There were also certain people possessed by demons who lived in desolate places”—out in the fields and wilderness—

“and devoured their own flesh. He restored them so that they could dwell in cities.” He healed them, and they returned to their homes in the city. “He made them sound of mind. He also healed a man with a withered hand, and with a single word He healed another whose body was half-paralyzed. There was also a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years. Her condition was so severe that the joints of her bones were visible and her veins were drained. She scarcely retained a human appearance and was continually wasting away in silence, for even the physicians had been unable to heal her. But once, as Jesus was passing through that region—”

“she secretly approached from behind and touched the hem of His garment. At that very moment, all that had been depleted within her was filled with strength, as though she had never suffered at all, and she began running swiftly toward her own city of Capernaum, six days’ journey away. These and countless other deeds are the works Jesus performed on the Sabbaths. Moreover, He worked fearful and extraordinary signs. From what I have understood, He is greater even than the gods whom we worship. The sacred precinct surrounding the temple of Judea appeared to me to collapse, and a chasm in the earth repeatedly gave forth a thunderous sound—”

“and dead men were seen risen from the grave.” A sacred structure had disappeared and then appeared again, and the dead came forth and were raised. “The Jews themselves testified that they had seen Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob risen, as well as the twelve Patriarchs, Moses, and John, who, according to them, had died three thousand five hundred years before.” Though they had died thousands of years earlier, they appeared risen. “They also saw many others appearing bodily, lamenting the lawless deed committed by the Jews, the destruction awaiting them, and the ruin of their law. Darkness lasted from the sixth hour until the ninth hour on Friday. Toward evening on the first day of the week, a sound came from heaven—”

He says this happened in the morning, when the Resurrection took place.

“Men appeared on high in glory, an innumerable multitude, and voices like mighty thunder were heard crying: ‘The crucified Christ has risen, for He is God. Rise up from Hades, you who were held captive in the regions beneath the earth!’ The chasm in the earth was greater than its foundations.” The chasm was so immense that no one could imagine it. “Then the waters above the sea of the abyss returned, amid thunder in the heavens, while the risen dead walked bodily among the multitude. He who raised the dead and conquered Hades said to His disciples, ‘I go before you into Galilee, and there they shall see Me.’ Throughout that entire night, O king, the light never ceased to shine. Many Jews died”—they died from fear—“and others were swallowed by the chasm”—the earth opened and swallowed them—“so that in the morning they could not be found. Only one synagogue remained within the city of Jerusalem.”

“Nothing else remained after that dreadful collapse. Having written these things and given an account of all that the Jews did against Jesus, I send this report to your mighty authority, my lord.” Pilate sent this letter to Rome, where it was read publicly before the people of the city and the emperor. Everyone was astonished that, because of Pilate’s lawlessness, darkness and an earthquake had come upon the whole inhabited world. Filled with anger, Caesar sent soldiers and ordered them to bring Pilate before him in chains. He sent them to bind Pilate and bring him to Rome. Now listen to the reply of Tiberius Caesar to Pontius Pilate the governor. It was sent with his chief courier, Rahab, who delivered it, together with two thousand soldiers—

to bring Pilate as a prisoner to Rome. “Tiberius Caesar, invincible and fearsome sovereign, to Pontius Pilate, governor of Judea. Because you unjustly sentenced Jesus to death, agreeing with the envious and wicked Jews and accepting gifts from them for His death, I therefore issue this command against you: You shall come before me in chains and give an account for the life you delivered to death without cause. What folly and hardness of heart! After witnessing so many great and weighty signs and miracles performed by Him, you dared to deliver such an innocent man to death. Who gave you, hardened and profane man—”

“unworthy of all mercy—who gave you the audacity and authority to take part in so great and God-hating a deed, to agree with the wicked council and the corrupt people, and to give them authority to inflict such a death? Judgment therefore hangs over you. Come quickly and give an account before me. You did not even write to me first concerning this matter, so that you might learn my will and ask whether you should do these things. Only after you had accomplished everything you desired did you write to tell me of the evil that had been done. Elsewhere in your letter, you freely reveal your own folly, telling me that you saw Him perform works and wonders greater than those of the gods whom we worship. All this arose from your envy and malice.”

“Since you did not receive Him as God, could you not at least have kept Him among you as a physician?” You did not accept Him as God, he says; but since He healed every illness and even raised the dead, could you not at least have kept Him as a physician? “For my part, merely by hearing of these fearful and extraordinary signs and miracles performed by Him, I reasoned within myself: Can He be only a man? He cannot be merely a man; He must also be God.” And indeed, that is what He was: not only man, but also God. “For only God, and not man, can raise the dead, open the eyes of the blind, cast demons out of people, and make paralytics stand upright. What man has ever had the power to raise someone who had been dead four days?”

“Or to open the eyes of a man blind from birth? I learned these things not only from your own letter, but even more from a woman who arrived here several days ago and related everything to me precisely. She came from the region of Magdala and was called Mary. She said that she too was a disciple of Jesus, and before the multitude she testified to and recounted the things He had done. Among other things, she told how He had cast seven demons out of her with a single word. Therefore, I cannot overlook this injustice.” And so they went to Jerusalem and bound these men.

I am telling you: after taking Pilate and the whole council into custody, they departed for Rome. The ship on which they were traveling reached Crete. Caiaphas died there, and they went ashore to bury him. They opened a grave and placed him in it, but the earth cast him out and would not receive him. They put him in again, and again he was thrown out. So they suspended him instead; they did not put him into the ground, but left him hanging there, and continued their journey.

Eventually they reached Rome. Caesar gave orders concerning the punishment of each one, and the account says: “When they reached Rome, Caesar utterly refused to look upon them. Instead, he ordered that Annas the high priest be wrapped up.” They enclosed him in the freshly stripped hide of a young ox.

They wrapped him in the freshly flayed hide of a calf and cast him out into the sun. The hide dried and contracted, and he died. That was the punishment of Annas. “As the hide dried from the encircling heat of the sun, he breathed his last.” Caesar kept Pilate in prison so that he could execute him himself.

There was a custom there—how shall I put it?—that if a prisoner managed, at any time during his imprisonment, to see the emperor face to face, the emperor would pardon his sentence.

The emperor! One day the emperor went out hunting. Pilate learned of this, and because there was a narrow opening in the prison wall, like an arrow slit, he crawled toward it so that when the emperor passed outside, he could call out to him. If the emperor saw him, his sentence would be pardoned. But what happened? While Caesar was hunting, a gazelle suddenly leapt out and began to run. He drew his bow to shoot, but the animal darted into hiding. At that very moment Caesar released his arrow, and it struck Pilate in the eye and came out through the back of his head. And so Pilate too met his end. There are other accounts as well that describe our Christ—

what He looked like and how people saw Him in those days; what the historians and other people wrote about the Most Holy Theotokos and how they described her. But there is not enough time tonight, so allow me to continue tomorrow evening. These accounts come from a tradition close to the events themselves. What I have told you tonight is by no means all of it. I have simply passed on a few things, so that you too may share in these serious matters that we shall one day face.

Λοιπόν, στο όνομα του οποίου εκήρυξε ο Ιωάννης μετάνοια στους ανθρώπους και τους κάλεσε να μετανοήσουν, αυτός ο Ιωάννης εκατέβη στον Άδη και εκήρυξε κήρυγμα μετανοίας στα εν φυλακή πνεύματα. Όταν ο Ηρώδης του έπαιρνε το κεφάλι, έχετε τη γνώμη ότι το έπαιρνε γιατί ήταν παλικαράς;

Και ως Θεόν τούτον ουκ εδέξασθε, καν ως ιατρόν ουκ έχετε Αυτόν; Δεν τον δέχεστε, λέει, ότι είναι Θεός· για γιατρό τουλάχιστον δεν τον κρατούσατε, εφόσον έκανε όλες τις αρρώστιες καλά, μέχρι και νεκρών αναστάσεις ακόμη. Εγώ γαρ εξ ακοής μόνον τούτων μαθών και τοιαύτα φοβερά και εξαίσια σημεία και θαύματα παρ' αυτού πραγμένα ακούσας, έκκρινα τω νω μου, είπα, λέει, με τον νου μου: Μη είναι αυτός άνθρωπος μόνον; Ότι αυτός δεν μπορεί να είναι άνθρωπος μόνον, αλλά και Θεός. Και πράγματι έτσι ήταν· δεν ήταν μόνον άνθρωπος, ήταν και Θεός. Το γαρ αναστήσαι νεκρούς και οφθαλμούς τυφλών ανοίξαι και δαίμονας εξ ανθρώπων διώξαι και παραλύτους ανορθώσαι, ταύτα Θεός μόνον δύναται ποιήσαι και ουχί άνθρωπος. Τις γαρ άνθρωπος ίσχυσε ποτέ νεκρόν τετραήμερον να εγείρει;
