Summary

The Paschal greeting “Christ is risen” should permeate Orthodox Christian life throughout the forty days leading to the Ascension. Christ accepted death voluntarily out of love for humanity, fulfilling scriptural prophecies such as the preservation of His unbroken bones. Old Testament figures and events—including Melchizedek, Joseph the All-Comely, the Passover lamb, and the relics of Elisha—are interpreted as types clarifying Christ’s identity, burial, and Resurrection.

He is risen. We have now passed through the events of both Holy Week and the Resurrection. And for many days—indeed, until the Ascension—the words “Christ is risen” will resound throughout the Church.

But they should not resound only in the Church; they should also be heard from the people of the Church. This greeting should make the very air vibrate, so to speak.

This is something a person must absorb deeply and truly believe. For the Resurrection of Jesus, together with the divinity of Jesus, are the two cornerstones on which man’s salvation—or, conversely, man’s perdition—rests. For if our Christ is not also God, and if He did not rise, there is no salvation for man, because one human being cannot save another. And if Christ was held captive by death and did not rise, then we too will be held captive by death and will not rise. But, Glory to God, He is both God and risen. Sadly, even we Orthodox Christians, who fill the churches, especially on the great feast days of Christianity, are either afraid to use this greeting or, if we are not afraid, do not consider it necessary. From the time the Church was founded, she has always used this greeting throughout the forty days. Everything else was replaced by it. “Good morning,” “hello,” “good night,” and “goodbye”—all of them were set aside.

“Good morning” was replaced by “Christ is risen,” and so were “hello,” “good night,” and every other greeting. “Christ is risen” completed everything, filled everything, and made everything resound, because this is the most momentous event man must come to know—an event that took place for his sake. Christ rose because Christ also died for man. He did not die for Himself or for His own sins; He died for the sins of mankind. And the Resurrection demonstrates this justification, and from the Resurrection of Jesus man now draws strength.

It is the most momentous event, and that is precisely why the Resurrection of Christ has been attacked. It is attacked now and will be attacked until the end of the age, because Satan does not want it. As we had occasion to say one evening while discussing another subject, there are many kinds of religions in the world, yet the true faith is one. There are many founders of religions, but the Church is one, and the one unique Head is Christ. All the others were human beings who died a natural death and did not rise. They remain bound in their burial shrouds. Only the tomb of Jesus—the Crucified One, the Nazarene—is empty.

And this is so in the midst of a hostile environment, in Jerusalem, among Arabs, Jews, and heresies of every kind: both His tomb and the tomb of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother—the tomb of the Author of Life and that of the Mother of Life—are empty. These two tombs are empty, unlike all the tombs of the so-called founders of religions, whether they are called Muhammad, Buddha, Zoroaster, pope, Calvin, Russell, or anything else. They all remain bound in death. This is the fundamental sign: death was conquered by Christ, Christ has power over death, and therefore those who believe in Him will also rise one day.

This is the most important matter: the Resurrection of Christ together with the divinity of Jesus. For Satan, through his instruments, also attacks this truth by claiming that Christ was merely a man, a reformer, or an intelligent teacher. Some even go so far as to call Christ a socialist, and others a communist. But Christ was God. He was not only the Son of Mary; He was also the Son of God. As man, He had a mother but no father; as God, He had a Father but no mother. This is why He is called fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. He had a type in the Old Testament, the one called

Melchizedek, who likewise is described as fatherless, motherless, and without genealogy. Thus, the greatest event of all was sealed the other day by the Resurrection of our Christ. Many truly experienced the Resurrection and felt Christ within their souls. Their days were different, despite their hardships, exhaustion, and the sufferings that beset people today. Yet even those who are simply indifferent, and those who have little connection with the Church, were moved during these days, because Christ is the One who moves all things. But from the moment news of the Resurrection of Christ reached the chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees,

they tried to cover it up, claiming that Christ had not risen but that His body had been stolen. As you know, this is an utter falsehood. Nevertheless, this claim, this report, was circulated.

They also put forward other ideas about the Resurrection in order to weaken people’s sense of its reality: that Christ had not died but had merely fallen into a deathlike state and later revived—that is, that He recovered after receiving care, as we have discussed. Others claimed that Christ

—of course—that between the ages of twelve and thirty Christ had gone to India, where He learned the techniques of fakirs; and that, as a well-trained fakir, He managed to remain for thirty-three hours in Hades, down in the tomb. After all, some fakirs remain buried for fifty or even sixty hours. All of this, of course, is false. Its purpose is to blaspheme the Mystery of the Resurrection by claiming that Christ did not rise. As for the claim that Christ left Jerusalem between the ages of twelve and thirty, let me take this opportunity to tell you that no such thing happened. I have had occasion to address this before; I have written and spoken about it, and there is even a recording concerning where Christ was from the age of twelve until thirty.

For many people this is a problem because they do not read, and since they do not read, they have no understanding of the subject. In any case, Christ neither went away nor learned fakirism, because Christ was not buried as fakirs are. The difference between our Christ and fakirs is this: fakirs are buried alive, whereas Christ was buried dead. Take any fakir you like, even one of the greatest of any age, and let us crucify him as Christ was crucified. Let us drive nails through him and raise him upon the wood; then let us thrust a spear into his side and let all the serum and blood flow out. Once we take him down after he has died, then we may speak about fakirism.

This is the difference. Pay attention to it, know it, and be ready to answer. Our Christ died, and indeed even His death was questioned. When they went to Pilate and asked permission to take Him down and bury Him, Pilate asked, “Has He died?” Of course He had died. “Then how is it that the others have not died yet?” Pilate sought confirmation, and the centurion, the commander of the guard, went and told him, “He has died.” Only then did Pilate grant the body so that Joseph and Nicodemus could bury it. Pilate questioned how He could have died so quickly when the others had not. Their legs were then broken, and they breathed their last, so that they would die before sunset.

The Jewish Passover was beginning. They considered themselves pure in every other respect and did not want to be defiled, so they wanted the bodies buried as quickly as possible, in order to eat their Passover meal. Pilate questioned Christ’s death, but the commander of the guard confirmed that He had died. For our Christ died; they did not cause His death. You must understand this. Our Christ was not crucified by the Jews, as I said here on Great Friday. He was crucified by our sins and by His love for us. For He came to His voluntary Passion, the Passion He freely willed. Had He not willed it, He would not have come. He came out of love for mankind and died at the hour He chose. Death has no power or authority over Life,

for Christ Himself is Life. As He said, “I have power to lay down My life and to take it up again whenever I will.” Death comes to me, to us, and to the whole world; it demands our soul and takes it from us. But He had no such fear that death would come and demand His soul. Instead, He offered it freely. This is why it had been written beforehand: “Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit.” He gave His soul as a ransom for many. Death takes our soul from us. We shrink back from death; we do not want it. But He went willingly to death, and our Christ died

at the hour He Himself chose, before they could break His legs, so that He would be clearly identified. For in the Old Testament there was an event—which we shall discuss one evening—in which a lamb was sacrificed as a type of Christ, and the command was given that none of that lamb’s bones should be broken. For the same would happen to the true Lamb, the One whom that earlier lamb typified: not one of His bones would be broken, and He would thereby be clearly identified. Thus, Scripture says, the saying was fulfilled: “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” This is precisely why our Christ died before they came to break His legs.

Indeed, He died at the hour He willed, as I have said before, and He died in the opposite order from the way an ordinary person dies. A person gives up the spirit and then bows his head. But Christ “bowed His head and gave up the spirit”—He bowed His head willingly. Notice the order: “And bowing His head, He gave up the spirit.” Thus, all these prophecies fulfilled in the person of Jesus both identify Him unmistakably and prove that He was not merely man, but something more: He was also God. Therefore, no one can claim that Christ needed to travel abroad to learn some technique that He could use when He was crucified and faced death. This must become a matter of faith for us; we must know it.

Whenever a person, even through ignorance, says anything against the divinity of Jesus or against the Resurrection of Jesus, he is already an antichrist, whether knowingly or unknowingly. I do not know whether you have ever read the Life of Saint Euthymius the Great. If you have a Synaxarion, open it and read it. There you will find the following incident, which I cite in support of what I am saying. One day, with the blessing of his abbot, Saint Euthymius the Great, one of his disciples went down to Alexandria to sell his handiwork and purchase certain supplies. On the way, he found himself traveling with a Jewish man.

As soon as the man saw that he was a monk, he began speaking against Christ, saying that Christ is not God, that the Messiah had not come, and so on and so forth. The young monk did not know how to answer. He was unlearned. Of course, he believed in the Church, made the sign of the Cross, participated in the Mysteries, obeyed his elder, and said his prayers, but he had no theological knowledge. The man kept pressing him until, simply to get away from him and end the conversation, the monk finally said, “Perhaps it may be so. Leave me alone; perhaps it may be so.” That ended the matter. The Jewish man went his way, and the monk went his. The monk completed his business and returned to the monastery that evening. But Saint Euthymius the Great had given an order that the monk was not to enter and ask for his blessing.

Normally, when he returned, he was to make a prostration and say, “Elder, through your prayers everything went well; I did this and that,” and so forth. But the elder said, “He is not to come in or speak to me. I will not receive him.” The monk understood that the elder would not receive him for some reason, so he began searching and examining himself, trying to discover where he had gone wrong that day. Yet he could find no fault. He sat outside the door and began to weep. The other members of the brotherhood felt sorry for him and interceded with the abbot, asking him to receive the monk and at least tell him what he had done wrong. Finally, after the pleas of the other brothers, the elder relented. They opened the door, and the monk entered. As soon as his elder saw him, before the monk could even draw near, he said to him, “So, perhaps He may not be?”

He neither remembered nor understood what this meant, and he kept moving toward the elder to make a prostration before him. “So, perhaps He is not?” “Are you speaking to me, Geronta?” he asked. “I am speaking to you.” “What does that mean?” he said. “How am I to understand it?” “You understand it, do you? Yet this morning, as you were going down with the Jew, you said precisely that: ‘Perhaps the Messiah, Christ, is not God after all.’” He had indeed said it, but only casually. Perhaps he did not actually believe it; he merely wanted to rid himself of the man, who had been clinging to him like a tick. So the elder put him under penance once again—yes, under penance again, do you understand? He had fallen into heresy, or reached its very brink, and the elder imposed penance on him before receiving him back.

We can simply say, “When we do not know something, we will keep our mouths shut. I do not understand the matter; leave me alone.” Or we can say, “This is what I believe,” even if we cannot prove it from Holy Scripture. This is fundamental; it is a confession of faith. For when a person goes so far as to undermine, directly or indirectly, any one of the twelve articles of the Creed, he is spiritually ruined. When the Creed is recited, the priest calls out from within, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.” What does this mean? We must stand aright regarding the articles just proclaimed: “I believe in one God; I believe in one Lord; I believe in the Holy Spirit.”

Concerning the Most Holy Theotokos, I believe that He was “begotten, not made.” I believe in one Baptism; I believe in one Church. I believe, I believe, I believe. If, for one reason or another, you tear out even one of these, you believe in nothing. And the words, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear,” are the words spoken by the Archangel Michael when the angels were falling and being transformed into demons. He stood in their midst and said, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear,” so that no others would fall. For we too will become like demons if we choose to question even one article of the Creed, whether knowingly or unknowingly. This is a serious matter, a very serious matter. A person must be attentive even to the smallest details whenever the Creed is concerned.

Consider what certain Jewish publishers have done when publishing versions of the Scriptures. They want to insert their own tradition and absolve themselves, because they seek to fight us with our own weapons. Where the Creed says that Christ was crucified “in the time of Pontius Pilate,”

they have changed “in the time of” to “by”: “by Pontius Pilate,” not “in the time of Pontius Pilate.” Thus Pilate crucified Him, rather than the Crucifixion taking place during his rule. For “in the time of Pontius Pilate” means that Christ was crucified in the days of Pilate. By whom? By the Jews. To remove this accusation from themselves, they have changed “in the time of” to “by.”

Pilate crucified Him; He was crucified by Pilate, not by us. That is how they seek to remove themselves from the matter. I am telling you this not so that you may become theologians, but to give you a small glimpse of just how subtle and delicate the matter of our faith is. We must guard it as the apple of our eye. It admits of no alteration, no correction whatsoever, because everything has been ordered and set in place by the grace of the Holy Spirit. It was not established by intelligent or educated men, but by the grace of the Holy Spirit, which cannot err in such matters. Returning, then, to our central subject, the Resurrection: a person must give it careful attention, absorb it deeply, and understand what a serious matter it is.

Do not begin your examination with the Resurrection, but with the Crucifixion. The Crucifixion and the manner of Christ’s burial are the guarantee of the Resurrection. So many safeguards were provided at His burial that the Resurrection could not later be discredited. The Resurrection was to stand as an undeniable fact, leaving no room for doubt. No one was to be able to intrude and claim that perhaps it never happened. Allow me, then, to go back and connect these things for you, so that you may see how the providence of God had already arranged everything beforehand to establish the certainty of the Resurrection afterward. First, our Christ...

He was buried as a Jew. The Jews had—and those who still keep the Jewish customs have even today—a particular burial practice. Many, of course, no longer concern themselves with their religion; they have become Europeanized and see nothing beyond business and the flesh. Yet others genuinely continue to observe the Jewish customs. Before Jews were buried, certain preparations had to be made. The dead person’s entire body had to be anointed with an adhesive substance called myrrh or aloes. Both myrrh and aloes, besides the fragrant essence extracted from them,

also contain a resinous substance, like the resin we know. They anointed the entire body and then wrapped it completely in strips of cloth, like swaddling bands. Within a few hours, therefore, this adhesive hardened and dried upon the buried person’s body like granite. The question is this: since Christ was buried in this manner, and these linen cloths and wrappings were later found in the tomb, was Christ stolen, or did He rise? When someone goes to steal something...

he goes on tiptoe, moves quietly, and tries to spend as little time as possible carrying out the deed. What would have been the best way to steal Christ’s body? First, enough people would have had to be found to lift the great stone—and it truly was a great stone. Yet the more people involved, the more dangerous the undertaking would become. Therefore, only one person, or at most two, could have gone. But two men would not have been enough to lift the stone. That is the first point. But let us set it aside. Then how did the linen wrappings remain there? If the body had been stolen, they would have needed to bring hot water, place Him in it, and soften...

and remove the wrappings. But why remove them at all? Why not bring a sack, place Him inside it, carry Him away on the shoulders of two men, and leave? That is how a theft is carried out. The fact that the linen cloths were found lying there—and all four Evangelists record this—is proof that He was not stolen, but rose. The face cloth was also found, the cloth tied around the head, just as we too bind the head with a cloth and untie all these things, along with the hands, before the coffin lid is placed on top. The face cloth was rolled up in a place by itself. Who untied these cloths, and who rolled that one up, if this was a theft?

Do such things happen in a theft? Are we to take such details into account? They do not take them into account. So what do we see here? Our Christ once said, “If you remain silent, the stones will cry out.” You may try to cover up the Resurrection, but the monuments themselves will speak: the stones themselves, the linen cloths themselves—all these things will speak when you attempt to conceal this truth. Christ also said this on another occasion, and there, where He said it, the surrounding stones opened their mouths. Those stones still exist today inside the Armenian Patriarchate. If you ever go there, ask them to show you. You will see them; they were later cemented back together, and their mouths remain open. Yet our Christ’s words also referred to this particular detail and to this very case.

These, then, are safeguards taken by the providence of God so that the Resurrection could not later be accused of being a fraud on the grounds that Christ had supposedly been stolen, as the soldiers claimed. They told a lie: “While you were sleeping, they took Him.” You were sleeping witnesses, and sleeping witnesses are not accepted. You were not awake to see what happened; you yourselves say that you were asleep. Since you were asleep, your testimony is invalid. How, then, can you have an opinion and assure us that they stole Him, or tell us how they did it? And, as I said, how were those wrappings found there? God also took another providential measure to establish the Resurrection of our Christ. It was this: Christ was buried...

in a new tomb.

The Greek word here means empty—pardon me, it means new: a new tomb. And John adds in parentheses—why did we need this detail?—“in which no one had ever yet been laid.” No one else had been placed there. Why tell us this? I tell you because there is a reason. In the Old Testament, there is a resurrection. It is not a self-resurrection, but one brought about through the power of the holy relics of the Prophet Elisha. In 2 Kings, chapter 13, verse 20, it is recorded that some men once went to bury someone in the cemetery.

The situation was critical; some kind of raiding party appeared at that very moment. The men became frightened and did not manage to carry the dead man all the way to his intended grave. They hastily threw him into another tomb, which happened to be the tomb of the Prophet Elisha. When the dead man’s body touched the relics of the Prophet Elisha, he rose, got up, and went away. Thus, no one would be able to claim that relics of some prophet or man of God had been inside Christ’s tomb and had caused Him to rise, rather than that He rose by His own power. Joseph of Arimathea, of course, would have had a family tomb.

Christ too would have had a family tomb in which He could have been buried. The tomb used for Him was not His own; by divine economy, He was buried there because there was too little time to open another tomb after His death at three in the afternoon. They could not have finished it in time. Therefore, Joseph’s tomb was used, which Joseph had commissioned for himself, hewn into the rock. But you know that to open a tomb in rock with a chisel takes months. So this tomb was used, and Christ was buried, as Scripture says, in a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Our Christ has a type, whom the Church sets before us on Great and Holy Monday.

“On Great and Holy Monday, we commemorate Joseph the All-Comely.” One evening we will explain the parallels, so that you may see Christ prefigured in the person of Joseph seventeen hundred years before Christ. Among the many things that happened to Joseph was this: his brothers planned to kill him, but Reuben, the eldest, intervened and told them not to do so. Instead, they threw him into a pit. Scripture specifically says that the pit was empty. This is important. In the same way, when our Christ was later buried in a tomb, that tomb was empty; no one else had been laid in it.

Joseph, His type, was placed in an empty pit; Christ, the reality fulfilled by that type, was placed in an empty tomb. There, Joseph’s brother Judah sold Joseph; here, Judas sold Christ. Are there other parallels? There are many, indeed, in the life of this man. I mention this only in passing: the empty pit had a purpose there as well. There it was a type and symbol; here it became reality. This is another reason why Christ had to be buried in a new tomb. Now to a second—or rather a third—point. They went to Pilate and said, “Sir, we remember that this deceiver said while He was still alive”—they call Christ a deceiver—while He was still living...

“After three days I will rise.” Therefore, they said, “So that the second deception may not be worse than the first, give orders for the tomb to be guarded. Otherwise His disciples may come, steal Him, and say that He has risen.” Pilate answered them...

Pilate said, “You have a guard, a custodia. Go and make it as secure as you know how.” In other words, take whatever measures you wish, whatever you think will make it secure, so that no one can take Him away and bring about the very thing you fear. And so they went, it says...

And they sealed the tomb and stationed the custodia there. They sealed the tomb, locked it, and so on; then they posted a guard, whether paid or unpaid, to keep watch. In doing so, they accomplished nothing except to guarantee the authenticity of the Resurrection. And the tragic irony is this: If He is a deceiver, why are you afraid of Him, gentlemen of Judea? But if He is God, what do you think you are doing? This is how man always behaves. Judas betrayed Him with a kiss, did he not? And even as he betrayed Him, he kissed Him. We are forever doing things backward. And the result is...

There were women who had seen what happened—how they placed a great stone over the entrance, and so forth. When they went later, early on Sunday morning, while it was still very dark, carrying the myrrh with which to anoint Him, the question troubling them along the way was who would roll away the stone. They were certain He was inside and that the disciples had not stolen Him. And what disciples? They had scattered like frightened birds; they had all fled. “I will strike the shepherd,” Holy Scripture had said, “and the sheep will be scattered.” And that is exactly what happened. Judaism struck the Shepherd, and His sheep fled—although, when He rose, He...

Gathered them together again. “We shall meet in Galilee,” as I told you; “Tell My brethren, and Peter.” So the women went, expecting to face this difficulty. They were certain the guard was there. But God intervened: He sent an angel, who moved the stone, and they found themselves before an empty tomb. “Why do you seek the living among the dead? You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here; He is risen.” This was the angel’s proclamation. And the women returned with the myrrh still in their hands. The tomb was empty, and that tomb remains empty to this day. There are no relics of God, nor are there relics of the Theotokos, as I told you at the beginning.

The tomb has remained amid hostile hands for two thousand years, right down to the present day, and just this past Saturday it once again gave forth light to the Orthodox. At midday last Saturday, the light appeared to the Orthodox above the All-Holy Tomb of the Resurrection. Some non-Orthodox also saw it—Abyssinians, Copts, Assyrians, and others—but not the Roman Catholics, who light their candles with a match and do not accept the Resurrection and the Light of the Resurrection. Nor do the Protestants. They remain entirely outside the All-Holy Tomb. They have made their own raised place there, which they call Golgotha, and have transferred there what they claim to be the tomb of Christ, and so forth. They are completely outside. Yet, as I say, even as recently as last Saturday and continuing to this day, the tomb proclaims: “I am here. Take heed, if you wish, and do not be deceived.” For the matter of Orthodoxy...

Is a matter of faith, but it is also a matter of knowledge. If I am asked whether I believe, I can say, “I no longer merely believe, because now I know.” I know from my personal conversations. The thousands of people who have gone there will be called to account; they will find themselves standing before a Mystery. And surely you understand that Judaism, the Arab world, the Papacy, and the rest could not be deceived by the ten people we have there, when officials are present—ambassadors, ministers, prime ministers, Turkish police, Israeli police, everyone. Could the handful of us there deceive them? Such formidable powers are not easily deceived. But because Christ wills it, it happens, it has happened, and it will continue to happen until the end of the age; and they will be without excuse.

These measures, then, which Christ took concerning His burial were intended to prove that His Resurrection was genuine, certain, secure, and true, so that people would not be shaken. For everything that took place afterward was supernatural, and it demonstrated that Christ had truly risen. Some people, of course, stumble at this point. If He rose, why did He not appear to the Jews?

People ask, “Why did He not go into the Jewish marketplace and say to them, ‘Gentlemen, you crucified Me, but I have risen’?” Human beings behave that way. That is what people do: “You crucified me, but I have risen, just to spite you.” People do such things, not God. When God knows beforehand...

That a person will not receive Him and will therefore be condemned more severely—for “he who knew and did not act will be beaten with many stripes”—He does not appear to that person, because He loves him and does not want him to be condemned more severely. He appeared wherever it was necessary for Him to appear. How many times did Christ appear at Pascha? Do you know? Let me count some of them for you. Holy Scripture says that Mary Magdalene was the first to see Christ and the first to receive the news of His Resurrection. That is what Holy Scripture says. In reality, however, I want you to know that this is not quite so. Does that mean Holy Scripture is lying? No.

The Christian stands on two feet: Holy Scripture and the Church. What do we chant during these days before the Most Holy Theotokos? Do you know what replaces “It Is Truly Meet”? “The angel cried to her who is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin; again I say, rejoice! Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day.” Why does the angel say, “Rejoice”? “Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day.” According to the teaching of the Church, the first to receive the news of the Resurrection of Jesus was the Most Holy Theotokos, through the Archangel. Why, then, does Holy Scripture say that Mary Magdalene was first? So that the report would not come from a close relative and therefore be rejected.

When the report spread that Jesus had risen, people would ask, “Who said so? Who saw Him?” “His mother. Now His mother says she has seen Him risen. Did anyone else see Him?” God never sets Himself against people; He makes it easier for them, if they are willing. For what happened afterward in Jerusalem? What miracles took place? The disciples came out of the upper room—twelve uneducated men—and spoke in eighteen languages and dialects. People would learn the truth from that; they would learn it from those signs. Or should Christ have gone to the café and told them, “Whatever you do, here I am; come and try again if you like”? Does God act in such a way? God does not do such things. “Let Him appear to me as well.” If it is necessary, and if you have a good disposition so that you may see...

And believe, then even now He appears to you, to me, and to everyone. It is enough to have a good disposition, because He knows. Have you prepared the proper ground for Him to appear to you? His purpose is not to torment you more severely. He does not indulge your whims, because you do not know what Hell means; you do not know what Tartarus means. That is precisely why you say such things. I remember once hearing a demon-possessed woman. While the demon was speaking, she suddenly said, “Go to Tartarus.” And the demon answered in that harsh, vulgar manner: “Woman, if you knew what Tartarus was, you would not even utter the word.” “Unbelieving Thomas,” the demon called her.

We speak of these things lightly and ask, “Why?” Ask God to tell you why. Did He do wrong by not appearing to confront them, or did He allow the truth to reach them indirectly, as He did with all His miracles? “Tell no one.” The miracle itself would speak. He departed; He did not wait for applause. Nor did He wish to confront their malice, provoke them further, and give them occasion to go astray in yet another way. Yet He did appear. After the Holy Resurrection, He appeared first to His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos. That is the first appearance. He appeared to Mary Magdalene, who mistook Him for the gardener. That is the second.

He appeared to the other myrrh-bearing women who went early in the morning. That is the third. “He appeared to Simon”—to Simon Peter. He made a special appearance to him, although He had already sent him word through the myrrh-bearing women: “Tell My brethren, and Peter.” Now, Protestants, tell us: who are His brethren? Who are these brethren? They are the disciples, and here He calls them brethren.

Is Peter not a disciple? Why does He say, “And Peter”? Is Peter not a disciple? Of course he is. But through his threefold denial, he had placed himself outside the company of the Apostles. “Tell My brethren, and Peter.” He sends Peter a special message that they will meet in Galilee. Why does He send this special message to Peter, and why does He afterward go and meet him alone? “He appeared to Simon.” Because there was a possibility that Peter might take his own life, as Judas had done. Christ wished to prevent this by showing that He had forgiven him and no longer held against him what he had done. Peter had taken it very hard: he went out and wept bitterly.

For as long as Peter lived, until the day he died, whenever he heard a rooster crow, he wept. The evening before, Christ had told him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times,” because Peter had used a little three-letter word: “I.” He had said, “I do not know what the others will do.” He did not say, “With Your help.” Yet the Lord had told him that evening, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you all like wheat”—he asked to sift you that very night—“but I have prayed for you,” not that you would not fall, but “that your faith may not fail,” so that you would not be lost. You will suffer a hard fall, as we say, so that from then on you may learn not to speak that way, but to say, “By Your strength.”

“Rabbi, Lord, I will come with You”—but not by your own strength. It was as though Christ said to him, “You will deny Me. Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times,” and that is exactly what happened. This weighed very heavily upon Peter. That night, as Christ was enduring His all-night ordeal—from Annas to Caiaphas, then to the Praetorium, and so on—Peter was outside in the courtyard, warming himself by a fire, as the texts tell us. It seems to have been a bitterly cold night. And what happened when the rooster crowed? From inside, through the window, Christ turned and looked at Peter; and Peter saw that Christ had looked at him. You can understand what followed. Peter was utterly broken. He went out, fled from there, and wept bitterly. The text expressly says “bitterly.” And so Christ sent him a special message.

He sent a special message to Peter and also appeared to him especially. So we have the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother; Mary Magdalene; the other myrrh-bearing women; and Peter. That makes four appearances so far. That afternoon, He walked toward Emmaus with two others, Cleopas and Luke. This was another distinct appearance. They welcomed Him into the house that evening, and in the breaking of the bread they discovered and recognized that it was He. That makes five. Then He appeared behind closed doors when Thomas was absent. Six. There was another appearance eight days later, this time to Thomas. Thomas did not deny the Resurrection. He was not demanding some extraordinary proof. He did not say that unless...

“I put my finger into the mark of the nails, I will not believe.” And Christ, who does not fear being touched because He is the Truth, came eight days later, repeating Thomas’s own words and referring to the same wounds. We shall commemorate this the day after tomorrow, on Sunday. Though the doors were closed, He stood in their midst and said to Thomas, “Come here; put your finger here, and do not become unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas was not an unbeliever; he was slow to believe and wanted complete proof. That is why Christ said, “Do not become unbelieving, but believing.” When God sees a good disposition, He condescends to man’s weakness. Thomas, too, needed to see Christ, because the next day, when he went out to preach with the other Apostles and someone asked him...

“You preach that Christ has risen. Did you see Him?” all the others could say, “We saw Him,” and could even accept death on the Cross for that confession. “We saw Him.” But if they asked Thomas, “Yes, but did you see Him?” he would have to answer, “I did not see Him; I only heard about it.” “Then go away.” But now he had seen Him. Thomas had seen Him, and so there was a twofold benefit: one for Thomas and one for the rest of us, who also want to see and who so often say, “Unless I see, I will not believe.” Thomas saw Him. What more is there to debate? Seek sincerely, and you will see. But woe to you if you see and still do not believe. So that makes six appearances on that same day, including the one when Thomas was present. Then came the appearance at Tiberias.

They were fishing. The Lord came down to the shore, and when Peter saw Him from the boat, he threw himself into the sea and came ashore. He asked them, “Do you have anything to eat?” When they came ashore, He already had grilled fish and bread prepared for them, and they ate. John recounts this in chapter 21, beginning with verse 1. He also appeared on the mountain in Galilee—“You will see Me in Galilee”—as Matthew records in chapter 28, verses 16–17. Then He appeared to five hundred people at once, as Paul records in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 15. Afterward, He appeared especially to James, the Brother of the Lord, the first bishop of Jerusalem; Paul also records this in chapter 15, verse 7.

Then He appeared at the Ascension, with the Most Holy Theotokos, the Apostles, and the others present, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 1, verse 9. Later, He appeared especially to Paul on the road to Damascus. Where did He not appear? And so Christ appeared wherever He needed to appear, and where He did not need to appear, He did not. Even today, anyone who desires fuller assurance concerning the faith should know that it is available. But when someone prays for an answer to a problem, whether moral or doctrinal, he must stand upright as he prays. What do I mean by upright?

I do not mean standing upright in body, but standing upright in spirit. We pray, but inwardly we are bent over. We want the answer to conform to our ego, our interests, our world, our weaknesses, and our flesh. Then God does not answer. But when He sees sincerity, God answers. He has His own way of giving your request a green light or a red light. He has His way. Until now, most of us have not asked God sincerely and left our concern in His hands. Instead, we ask in such a frame of mind that we want our own will to be done. In other words, we alter the words of the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy will be done.”

We turn them into, “My will be done.” That is what we want. This is why many people receive an answer, but then go and ask somewhere else, and then somewhere else again. They keep asking and create a vicious circle, refusing to hold fast to the first answer God gave them, while accepting all sorts of later answers that lead nowhere. My dear friends, as I said at the beginning, the Resurrection of Jesus requires that the faithful be given sound assurance, because many know very little about it. In the few minutes remaining, I also want us to understand that Christ’s Resurrection was not the first resurrection the world had ever witnessed. It was the eighth in order.

The first resurrection the world witnessed took place a thousand years before Christ, through the Prophet Elijah, who raised the son of the widow of Zarephath in Sidon, in whose home he was staying. This is the first resurrection, recorded in the Old Testament, in 1 Kings, chapter 17. The second resurrection the world witnessed took place through Elijah’s successor, the Prophet Elisha. He too raised the son of the woman who had received him into her home, the Shunammite woman. This is recorded in 2 Kings, chapter 4.

The third resurrection is the one I mentioned earlier, when the relics of the Prophet Elisha raised a dead man. As we said, this is recorded in 2 Kings, chapter 13, verse 21. These are the three resurrections in the Old Testament. The fourth was performed by Christ upon the son of the widow of Nain. Outside the village of Nain, at its boundary, God encountered the dead man; death met Life, and Life conquered death. This is recorded in Luke, chapter 7, verse 14. The fifth resurrection overall, and the second in the New Testament, was that of the daughter of Jairus. She too was raised when Christ simply took her by the hand, as we read in Luke, chapter 8.

The sixth of all these resurrections, and the third in the New Testament, was that of Lazarus, whom Christ raised after he had been dead for four days. We commemorated this only a few days ago, if you remember. It is recorded in John, chapter 11. The seventh resurrection was that of certain people at the moment when Christ said, “It is finished,” upon the Cross: many tombs were opened, and many of those who had fallen asleep were raised.

Να τα βγάλουν. Αλλά και γιατί να τα βγάλουν; Πώς δεν πήραν ένα τσουβάλι, να τον βάλουν μέσα, να τον πιάσουν δύο στον ώμο και να φύγουν; Αυτή είναι η κλοπή. Πώς κλέβουν; Το ότι ευρέθηκαν τα οθόνια κείμενα, και το γράφουν και οι τέσσερις Ευαγγελιστές, αυτό είναι απόδειξη ότι δεν εκλάπη, αλλά ότι ανέστη. Ότι ευρέθη το σουδάριον, αυτό που δένει το κεφάλι, όπως το δένουμε κι εμείς με ένα μαντήλι το κεφάλι, και τα λύνουμε όλα αυτά τα πράγματα και τα χέρια την ώρα που πλέον θα μπει το καπάκι από πάνω. Το σουδάριον τετυλιγμένο σε έναν τόπο. Ποιος τα έλυσε και ποιος το τύλιξε, όταν πρόκειται περί κλοπής;

Μέτρα, λοιπόν, αυτά, λέγω, τα οποία πήρε ο Χριστός κατά την Ταφή του, ήταν για να αποδειχτεί η Ανάστασή του ειλικρινής, βεβαία, ασφαλής, αληθής, για να μην κλονιστούνε οι άνθρωποι, διότι όλα αυτά τα οποία έλαβαν χώρα εκ των υστέρων είναι πράγματα υπερφυσικά. Και απέδειξε ότι πράγματι ο Χριστός ανέστη. Ορισμένοι βέβαια εδώ σκοντάφτουν. Εφόσον ανέστη, γιατί δεν παρουσιάστηκε στους Εβραίους;

Παρουσιάστηκε έπειτα στην Ανάληψη, Παναγία μαζί, οι Απόστολοι κλπ., που αναφέρεται στις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων, στο Α΄, εννέα. Παρουσιάστηκε έπειτα στον Παύλο, ειδικά στη Δαμασκό. Και πού δεν παρουσιάστηκε; Εκεί, λοιπόν, που έπρεπε να παρουσιαστεί ο Χριστός, επαρουσιάστηκε. Εκεί που δεν έπρεπε να παρουσιαστεί ο Χριστός, δεν παρουσιάστηκε. Και σήμερα, όσοι άνθρωποι θελήσουν πλείονας πληροφορίας γύρω από την πίστη, να γνωρίζουν ότι τις έχουν. Αλλά θέλει τον άνθρωπο, όταν προσεύχεται για να πάρει μια απάντηση σε ένα πρόβλημά του, είτε ηθικής τάξεως είναι είτε δογματικής τάξεως, ο άνθρωπος που προσεύχεται να στέκεται όρθιος. Τι εννοώ όρθιος;
