Summary

The Christian must live within society without adopting its sins, fashions, values, or fear of public opinion. The blind man near Jericho immediately cries out to Jesus as the Son of David, refusing to let the crowd silence his appeal for mercy. Salvation requires discernment, readiness, and perseverance on the narrow and difficult path rather than conformity to the world.

In our previous talk, we spoke about the difficulties the world places in the Christian’s path. How difficult it is for a person to escape the world’s grasp, to overcome its obstacles, and to become a true Christian, as Christ and the Gospel require. We said that the world is man’s second greatest enemy. His first enemy is Satan, and his second is the world, concerning which Holy Scripture tells us that “the whole world lies under the sway of the evil one.” Unfortunately, we have not yet fully understood this, and most of us remain friends with the world. Someone may ask, “Well then, what am I supposed to do? Should I begin fighting against the world?” No, do not fight against the world. But do not do what the world does. Do not follow what the world dictates. Do not be carried away by its methods, its words, its fashions, or its powers. Otherwise, you would have to leave the world altogether. As Paul says plainly in Holy Scripture, if that were so, you would have to go out of the world.

He says this in the Epistle to the Corinthians. When I say that you will live among the sexually immoral, he tells us, you must not become sexually immoral; you will live among thieves, but you must not become a thief; you will live among false witnesses and dishonorable people, but you must not become like them. Yet the Christian, unfortunately, thinks that because most people have these faults, he cannot be different. He believes that he too must conform to the world in which he lives. But Christ does not agree. A person is free to listen or not to listen, to follow or not to follow the world.

The world, for example, wants a woman walking through the marketplace with a cigarette in her hand. I refuse to follow that. It wants her to adopt its way of thinking. I refuse to follow or listen to the world. It wants a man to wear his hair long so that he will be considered somebody. I refuse to listen. It wants him to be a gambler, a drunkard, and a swaggering tough. It wants the young woman in jeans and the young man with a girlfriend. The Christian is obliged to take a stand against these weaknesses of the world—not merely to refrain from taking part in its evil and dark works, but also to adopt such a clear position that others understand he is not following them, even though this may often expose him to criticism.

The world is like a person’s shadow: when you chase it, it flees, but when you turn away, it draws near. Try to step on the shadow of your own head; you cannot. The more you try to tread on it, the farther it moves away. But when you turn and walk forward, you know that the shadow follows close behind. Why should I follow the world instead of letting the world follow me? Why am I obliged to listen to the world rather than have the world listen to me? That is the question. Why should Christ call me to account tomorrow, or why should I lead someone else to ruin, as we say? If I give my blessing to the world’s weaknesses, the world will conclude, “You are one of us. Things cannot really be as the priests and preachers say.”

Many Christians, including women who are ladies in every sense of the word, regard these matters as secondary. But they are not secondary; they concern Christianity itself. The world is a great temptation, as are the devices Satan employs through it. You see, it was not the devil alone, but Eve as well. She became a powerful weapon in the devil’s hands. He used her in the beginning to overthrow and enslave the first man. Satan did not act alone. Holy Scripture shows the devil using Eve as well. Together they overcame Adam, and we know what followed.

They found themselves naked. When Satan saw that this device had worked, he used it again in the days of Job. You will remember that he spoke with God, and God gave him power over Job’s possessions and household, but not over Job himself. Satan destroyed everything, yet he did not take Mrs. Job. He devastated Job’s children, servants, animals, and property, but he did not destroy Job’s wife. He left her untouched and then used her against Job, for she went to him and told him to blaspheme God and die.

Job had been tormented for years and reduced to a living skeleton, sitting upon the dunghill. “Why should I blaspheme Him? If you told me to blaspheme Him so that I might recover, I could at least understand what you meant. But if you tell me to blaspheme Him merely so that I may die, why should I do it? What benefit would that bring you?” It would not benefit her; it would benefit the one who was inciting her and on whose behalf she was acting at that moment. That is one side of it. But the world too is a great beast, because it has flesh and eyes with which to see, anger it can display, a voice that can be heard, hatred, murder, power, and everything else. Faced with this whole tempest and all these snares, a person asks, “How can I possibly escape?” Of course, if I give way to anger, I will drive Christ away.

The devil will come—perhaps through your mother-in-law—and you will defend yourself, struggle, quarrel with her, become bitter toward her, break off all relations, and refuse even to answer when she telephones. And then you will want to become a godmother! Leave the world aside. Look to Christ and treasure friendship with Christ. If you lose the friendship of the world, you lose nothing you need or that can truly help you. No matter what certificates the world gives you, whether it calls you a saint or says you are damned, it can neither benefit nor harm you. With Christ’s help, a person prepares his own certificate, bearing Christ’s seal. A person may receive every seal of approval that the world can give, but if he does not receive Christ’s seal, it all amounts to nothing.

The Ascension, Holy Scripture, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse, the Kingdom of Heaven—these are the things that matter. The world merely looks for something to chatter about, pecking at trifles like hens scratching beneath the coop. The world has great power, and many people fear it. They draw back and keep looking around at others, asking, “What will people say?” They never ask, “What will Christ say? What will the Theotokos say? What will my patron Saint say?” So a person must decide whether or not to follow the world.

In connection with those familiar words—which you may remember—we took our subject from John’s catholic epistle. Tonight another timely incident brings us to the same conclusion. It concerns exactly what we have been discussing: how greatly the world can obstruct a person’s salvation, and how a person can resist the world if he truly wishes to do so. In the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 18, verse 35 and following, we read this:

“As He drew near to Jericho...” Christ, together with His disciples and the crowd, was approaching Jericho. “A certain blind man sat by the roadside begging.” He was a beggar, sitting beside the road and asking for alms. What else could the blind man naturally do to earn his daily bread? “And hearing a multitude passing by”—he had no sight, but another sense told him that something was happening. In our everyday language, he heard that quite a commotion was passing by. Little by little, he realized that a crowd was going past and that something important was taking place. So he asked what was happening. He was curious to learn why this whole crowd was passing together. “And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.”

The reason for the crowd you hear, they told him, is Jesus of Nazareth. That was the answer given by some of the people standing nearby. He is the leader, the one at the head of this multitude you hear. The blind man immediately seized his opportunity and cried out, “Jesus, Son of David...” He did not let the opportunity pass. He did not say, “Tomorrow I will prepare myself, ask questions, and think it over.” He is passing by now, so I will cry out now. This is an answer to all who are indecisive, to all who procrastinate and turn today into tomorrow.

When tomorrow becomes today, they put it off until tomorrow once again. And when that tomorrow becomes today, they postpone it until the day after. This is one of Satan’s great devices: through our spiritual sloth, negligence, and indecision, he steals the present from us and promises us the future. “What will you become?” “I will change tomorrow.” And then you sin again. “Will you go to confession now?” If you think you can wait until your final days, that thought is deceiving you. What did you imagine? This is one of Satan’s great devices, by which he sends many people alone into eternity.

They know neither the hour when they will depart from this world nor the manner in which they will leave it.

When will the Lord come? In one of two ways, every person will meet his Creator and stand before his Judge: either through death or at Christ’s Second Coming. Since both death and the Second Coming of Christ will come at an unexpected time, a person must always be ready and must not delay. Delay causes hardness of heart—hardness. It is like piling filth upon filth. Is it the same to take a feather duster and remove the dust that gathered today as it is to clean a piece of furniture left untouched for one year, two years, twenty years, or fifty years? Is it the same? Can it be cleaned just as easily?

Do our clothes come clean in the same way when we send them regularly to the cleaner as when we leave them there for fifty years before deciding to have them cleaned again? Is it the same? Of course it is not; anyone can tell you that. Yet a person is swept along, does not come forward, and does not attempt what he ought to do today, but leaves it until tomorrow. Tomorrow does not belong to him, and so he is carried away by the current and passes into eternity. This device is utterly satanic. Indeed, as I once read in a patristic tale, it was devised by a minor demon, but with great cunning. The story said that a council of demons was once convened.

They all gathered together, the various figures of that satanic world, and held a consultation. How could they lead more people into Hell? What policy should they follow, and what measures should they take? Beelzebub, the chief among them, gave the floor to the various demons present, and they offered many proposals. “We will create wars so that people kill one another. We will stir up blasphemies. We will separate husbands and wives. We will promote sexual perversions, mortal sins, and murderous political systems.” Most of them argued, “We will create atheism and persuade people that nothing exists beyond the grave.” For all these ideas come from them: that there is nothing beyond the grave, and that no one has gone there and returned to tell us.

But the Gospel, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, and the Second Coming will still bear fruit among people. How long can we keep telling the world, “There is no God”? How long can we say that nothing exists beyond the grave? How long can we repeat such things? No, they said, we will not manage to convince everyone. God’s existence is palpable. A person must be deeply corrupt, deliberately refusing to acknowledge a Creator. “Then what shall we do?” they asked.

“Tell them that everything exists. Hell exists, Paradise exists—everything exists—but they still have plenty of time. Why do anything now?” The words “you have plenty of time” were the proposal of that little demon. Many people prefer the devil to appear great and fearsome. “Why do you honor that great one but pay no attention to me, a little demon?” We should heed neither the small nor the great. This device—“you have plenty of time”—comes to us through the world. Many times it is served to us by the very people around us. They stand over us, having meanwhile arranged and agreed upon our funeral, and tell us, “Tomorrow, when you are back on your feet—tomorrow.” Yet they have already given the funeral director his instructions. Such people are plainly instruments of Satan. It may be one’s father, mother, spouse, brother, or anyone else.

See how thoroughly the world prepares you, how it hides the truth, deceives you, sweeps you along, and leads you astray: what you will become, how you will appear, what you will spend, what you will desire, what you will do, and so forth. It does nothing else; it merely plays its part in wrapping you up and dispatching you into the great kingdom of its ruler, Satan. The world is not always the neighbor outside. What we call “the world” may be inside your own home. You may find your whole household serving evil and becoming an instrument of Satan, suffocating you—not allowing you even to raise your hand and make the sign of the Cross, burn incense, keep an icon, fast, or make a prostration of metanoia. A person may therefore have to resist the devil and the world within his own home. So tell me: what is a person called to do?

What I am telling you is this: none of us, young or old, should waste time. Something my wife said at home today made an impression on me. Our little boy had done something similar at school—he had quarreled with someone, told a lie somewhere, things had become confused, and there had been an uproar. So she imposed a rule of prayer on him: “Tomorrow you will not receive Holy Communion,” she told him. We had come here to Corinth for Sunday. “You will not receive Holy Communion tomorrow,” she said. A punishment, you see—not to receive Holy Communion. But what was needed was for him to confess and receive Holy Communion. You could see him standing apart in the Church. So I said to Father Spyridon—you know him; he is the senior priest here—“Hear the boy’s confession; he has something to tell you.” And the little boy went and confessed inside the sanctuary.

The priest gave him his blessing to receive Holy Communion. The boy told him the truth; the priest examined the matter and told him what he should do, and so forth. I told him, “Go and tell your mother, who is in the women’s gallery, that you have confessed, and ask for her blessing to receive Holy Communion.” After all, she was the one who had forbidden him. I did not want to come between them and undermine her authority—not merely contradict her, but tear it down. And the little boy received Holy Communion last of all, together with you. Then, because he had done something else yesterday, she told me today that he should not receive Holy Communion. “I did not prepare him, so he should not receive.” But did I prepare him? Holy Confession prepared him; the child came willingly.

Did he have to go to his own spiritual father? Were we supposed to find him in Athens? We had a car, but it broke down. The car could not come, and the delay was wearing us out. Why should the child be left burdened in that condition? There was no time to spare. Tomorrow he could go to his spiritual father, recount the whole matter, and receive counsel from him. What remained was a matter of instruction; absolution had already been given there in the sanctuary, and Holy Confession was complete.

Must Holy Confession be made to that same priest in order to be valid? Counsel can also be given by us or by his teacher. That priest is his spiritual father. But at that moment the important thing was for the child to confess, for that sin to be removed from between us, and for him to be set free from it. Who could say that we would return home that evening? And if we did not return, why should he remain condemned? So you see how the devil can be at work even inside the home. What does it matter what the neighborhood has decided? And if it is the mother saying such a thing, and stubbornness has taken hold in the home, just try to deal with it. How difficult it is for a person to become a Christian.

How difficult it is for a person to be different and not run with the crowd. Your so-called brother himself may tell you, “You have no love.” That is nonsense. A person must have discernment. For love must sometimes yield to discernment. That is what our Holy Fathers teach. Although the Gospel, through Paul, says that the greatest virtue is love—“the greatest of these is love”—we also speak of discernment. Discernment, my beloved, is the safeguard of what is good. So this is a matter of discernment. Now—now; tomorrow does not belong to me. My beloved, do you know that the present does not really exist? Do you know this?

A person does not hold the present in his hands, nor does he hold the future in his hands. Does he possess the past? Not even the past; it has gone. Think about it seriously for a moment. Whatever I have just said is already past. Whatever I am about to say is still in the future. Where, then, is the present?

Man is suspended, as they say—suspended between heaven and earth, living in uncertainty. No one knows what may happen. Someone intends to go home, but who knows whether he will arrive? The blind man acted at once, on his own initiative, entirely on his own. I once told you about another incident that happened to me.

I came on Sunday morning and served the Divine Liturgy, and then I returned on Sunday afternoon to give a talk.

Looking down at the audience, I saw a young woman come in. Among the great crowd, this one young woman entered. From her manner and bearing, I could tell that she did not attend regularly. I do not know what she heard from the sermon outside, but it held her there. She remained standing for fifty minutes. I had not even been speaking for ten minutes when she arrived, and she did not move at all. At the end, while other people who had come were gathering around, and the bishop was there amid all the commotion, she too came forward last. In my haste I said, “You—come here.” She was about twenty-six or twenty-seven years old. “Go to Holy Confession now.” She asked, “Why?” I said, “Go now, while your heart is warm, because you need to confess now. Go and confess now, in Athens.”

She said, “I will come to the talk this afternoon, and then we can discuss it.” I replied, “Very well, but do what I am telling you now, and come back this afternoon. This afternoon is...”

That afternoon, the young woman went boating with two others, and all three drowned. Do you hear what a Mystery this is? All three drowned; they went boating that afternoon. They were young people. While I was speaking, they went out toward Mikrolimano. The result was that between noon and afternoon the girl was gone. How did I come to tell her, “Go now; come here”? What she said and what she finally did, I do not know. I only mean that this event remains before my eyes. We can rely on nothing. Now—that is what matters. A person is like a cypress tree standing alone. “Later I will come to my senses; later I will change...”

“I will still have time to be saved.” That is supposed to be spirituality: “I will still have time to be saved.” Yet many people not only fail to act themselves, but also make it difficult for others to be saved. Instead of helping them, they become obstacles. Listen. This man was blind. He was suffering. In a sense, he looked to those who could see for support—both material support from those near him who understood his needs, and moral support as well. Listen! As I told you, he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David,” the biblical name of Christ. It is a biblical name, that is, a name...

that was proclaimed among the nations. The prophets had said that Christ would be a descendant of David, that is, the Son of David. So this blind man knew the biblical name of Christ, while many sighted and highly educated people know nothing about Christ. Even after 1,970 years, we still know nothing about Christ—Christ, who, with twelve simple men, without atomic bombs, wealth, silver, or worldly power, overturned the whole world, brought down established orders, raised up the Cross, changed the calendar, changed the names people bore, and caused them to be called Christians.

People today know nothing, yet this blind man hears that Christ is coming and cries out to Him by His biblical name: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” And those who were going ahead rebuked him and told him to be silent. Who were those going ahead? They were the people traveling with Christ. But that is not why you go with Him—to make it harder for those who are approaching Christ. Do you know how many of us, instead of making it easier for others to come to Christ, find their way, abandon sin, practice metanoia, go to Holy Confession, begin attending Church, and undertake the spiritual struggle—instead of helping them do all this, we place obstacles in their way? Do you know how many? Many—very many.

I know of many such cases here in the provinces, and Athens certainly has many among Christian families. It is not so much the openly worldly person who makes it difficult for someone to approach Christ, as the person who appears to follow Christ but acts in a worldly way. You visit a Christian home during a fast, and they serve you chicken. That makes you reject even the atheist. If you go to an unbeliever’s home and are served chicken, it does not hinder you in the same way. But if you go to a religious home and they serve you chicken, you may never become a Christian. If the host is a priest, you may certainly become a Jehovah’s Witness; and if he is a bishop, you may certainly become a heretic—one hundred percent. Do you understand? These are the people who appear to be following Christ, those going ahead. People say, “This is Christianity.” But this is not Christianity at all. It is merely a travesty of Christianity.

You see Christian mothers holding their Paschal candles while wearing men’s trousers. How can these things be celebrated together, when God has said that it is an abomination for a woman to put on a man’s clothing? How can you hold Christ in your hands in that way? He is risen—and the One who rose is the One who said this. Either the one thing is true or the other. Both cannot be true together; they do not fit. Either you believe Him and follow Him, or you do not believe Him and reject this as well. If Christ is risen, and you believe that one day He will come to judge the living and the dead, then you are bound to live accordingly and not in a manner contrary to Orthodoxy. Do we not now see Christian homes opening their doors and accepting what Holy Scripture calls abominations? Or within the home itself, the girl and the boy are dressed in such a way that today you can scarcely tell them apart...

You would need measuring instruments and experts just to know whom you were speaking to. This mixing and confusion, as things have become today, is not found only in so-called worldly homes. It is also found in other homes, the so-called religious ones—among those who go ahead, journeying with Christ on the way up to Jerusalem. These people become obstacles. They prevented the blind man from approaching Christ, although they were the sighted ones and knew that Christ possessed this power. Before the blind man even spoke, they should have stopped Christ there and said something like, “Please, here by the bridge, here at this narrow place...”

“Have mercy on this man too. He will be delivered and will no longer have to sit in the bitter north wind, collecting pennies for his bread; and we too will be relieved.” For when a blind man stretches out his hand and says, “I look to you who can see,” he places a moral demand upon you. Whether you want to or not, you feel obliged to give him something, little or much, and that also relieves your conscience. Yet those people not only failed to help him; they made matters harder. It is good for a person to have good neighbors. Leave your house open, and they will watch over it. But if your neighbors are wicked, even if you lock it, they will rob it and break in. What is the value of having Christians around you? Their moral presence restrains evil.

A Christian environment ought to help a person. Why, then, should it make his spiritual struggle harder? Why should it make Christianity difficult for him? Many openly acknowledge the Christian’s strength and virtue. I know a businessman who is a friend of mine. He owns workshops, has a great deal of money, and runs a large enterprise. Whenever he had to leave to do some good work—to attend to a social need or visit someone in mourning—he would entrust his keys to his Christian employee, the one who lived according to the Canons. At the same time, he mocked that employee for his faith. Yet when it came to the keys, he turned to the Christian employee, not to the others, though he himself would not follow that way of life. Do you understand? This is what lies within people. The world, then, is a great obstacle and hinders man. Yet people are waiting for someone to make it easier for them to go to Christ.

Do you expect to reach Christ by traveling along a broad highway? The way that leads to life—to Christ—is narrow and difficult. It is narrow and filled with tribulation. When we say difficult, we do not simply mean gloomy or miserable; we mean a path of complete devotion, under the protection of the Theotokos.

And so, what is this meant to teach us? That you must always keep your eyes fixed ahead. You never know around which corner someone may suddenly appear and cause a collision. What do drivers do when they travel along a road with many bends? They pay attention, expecting someone at every turn. If they say, “There is nothing there,” they will certainly collide.

At every turn, the driver assumes that he may meet someone, even though he may meet no one at all. Then he will arrive safely. In the same way, the believer does not know what will happen around the next corner. When he steps out of his door, how can he know what the next second of his life will bring, what tomorrow holds for him, or what the coming year may bear? He cannot know. So he walks with his eyes forward, always attentive. If he begins turning this way and that, looking at shop windows and televisions, listening to one thing while looking at another, he will certainly suffer a disaster in his life. He will not reach his destination. When Peter walked upon the sea—pay attention—he looked at Christ, and he walked upon the sea. But when he turned to look at the raging waves...

he began to sink. When he took his eyes off Christ, he began to sink. As long as his eyes were fixed on Christ, he walked upon the sea, just as Christ did. That is the lesson. The moment you turn aside and take your eyes off Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), off your place and your journey—where you are going, before whom you will appear, and how you will appear—you will begin to sink. Do not lose heart. Cry out, “Lord, help me!” Reach out: He is beside you and will give you His hand. It is a great device of Satan to discourage people and persuade them that no help exists. Even today I hear many say that teachers have disappeared, principles have disappeared, and the appointed times and spiritual guidance have disappeared...

No, that is false. There is always help. For those who truly desire it, there will always be a person to guide them. There will never be an age in which someone who truly seeks help will find no one. But it depends upon the person—whether he is willing to remain steadfast and persevere. Saint Kosmas of Aetolia, the teacher of the nation, expressed it beautifully: “They may take away your animals, your wives, your children, your husbands, your homes, your wheat, and everything else. But no one can take your Christ or your soul unless you surrender them.” And that is true. The world is an obstacle, but I must go around the world. Zacchaeus faced many obstacles.

His rank and high social standing were an obstacle. His short stature was an obstacle. His dignity was an obstacle too: how could a man of his position climb a sycamore tree? Yet he ran. He went around the crowd that would not let him pass, took another way, moved ahead of them, and disregarded his position. He did not care what the newspapers might write the next day, calling him a mayor, a chief, Zacchaeus, or anything else. He was an important man, not an ordinary person, yet he saw Christ. And he not only saw Christ; he was counted worthy to receive Christ into his home and at his table, to introduce Him to his wife, if he had one, to have Christ bless his children, to drink from the same pitcher and eat the same food, and for God to converse with His creature.

All this came through the sacrifice he made when he went around the world and its opinion. So regard the world as both something and nothing. Do you understand? Make use of the world only as long as it does not enslave you. The moment it tries to enslave you, let the world remain in its place and you in yours. If the soul begins to follow the world, you will leave your proper place. The world may appear to be a great friend, yet in such matters it is always an obstacle to living the Christian life. A woman from Ioannina telephoned me in Athens today. Among the things she told me, she said, “The bank is holding a celebration here. My husband has social engagements during these days, and we are at our wits’ end.” I asked her what they would do. “We cannot refuse to go,” she said. “And what will happen?” “I need your blessing...”

“Should I go? What else can I do?” “Yes,” she told me, “but there will be feasting and drinking there, and it is during the fast.” I said, “Is there no fish there? Does all Epirus produce no eel or anything else, so that you do not have to eat meat?” “Perhaps,” she said, “but that is how things are.” You see how her husband’s position becomes an issue. Her husband had gone a few days earlier and eaten meat, and now, she said, they were on tenterhooks and did not know what to do. It is as though you must make yourself ill voluntarily so that others will not make you ill, and then take a sedative. But you do not have to become ill. You can stand firm. “The manager will misunderstand me; this person or that person will take offense, because they believe in nothing.” So what? Shall we give in? Shall we follow them?

When the governor of that time, one of your own people, came here to take charge of the island, it was a fasting season, and they offered him fasting food. He protested, saying, “I do not fast for the Nazarene.” Before long, his end approached and he became ill. A priest went to give him Holy Communion, but he drove the priest out, crying, “The Nazarene!” He drove the Nazarene away and turned his back on Him. But surely the Nazarene also left him outside in the end. For the Nazarene to remain outside here is not the most serious thing; for a person to remain far from the Nazarene there, in the next life, is truly serious. Therefore, do not fear the world. Its certificates of approval will help you in nothing. We shall value other people.

We shall respect them, but we shall not follow them in their weaknesses, their idolatry, or anything else that leads us toward foreign gods and pagan deities. I respect you, and I will humble myself before you, whoever you may be; but I will not attach my life to yours, imitate what you do, or go where you want me to go. That would mean abandoning the Gospel, extinguishing the spirit, and separating oneself from Christ. The blind man in today’s passage was not intimidated. They told him to be silent, but he did not listen. Instead, he raised his voice and cried all the louder, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And when a person truly desires...

Christ is the One who heard Jonah from within the sea creature and brought him out. It is prayer that reaches Christ. Christ is the One who said to Nathanael, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Before Philip came to speak to you, He was saying, I knew where you were, my brother. I knew what you were doing beneath the fig tree: you were praying, and your prayer was coming to Me. A person must truly desire. When he does, every obstacle is levelled, as though a bulldozer had passed through and made everything flat. All obstacles are swept away. However many mountains stand before him, he has the strength to level them all.

But the person must truly desire it and cry out from within, “Christ, I desire You; make me what You want me to be.” A man who was going away to pray in the wilderness used to say, “Your property is in danger.” By “property” he meant himself, as belonging to Christ, because Christ suffered for us and, according to the faith, we are His possession. This remains true even though we offer incense to the devil and evict Christ because He tells us “no” and “you shall not,” while our present way of life, our fashions, the world, self-interest, and the ego do not agree with Him. These are entirely different things. Nevertheless, we are His possession; this is the truth of the matter. Holy Scripture says, “You were bought at a price.” And remember that prominent Indian whom Christ introduced to Thomas in order to prepare the Apostle to go and preach in India. Remember what he asked him.

Christ said, “I have a servant, and I am selling him.” They came to an agreement, and the Indian would take him. Christ said that he was a skilled craftsman who could undertake various kinds of work. Then He brought them together, and the Indian asked the Apostle Thomas, “Tell me truly, are you His servant? Is He your master?” Thomas answered, “Yes.” “He has sold you,” the man said, “and the document says that He bought you at a very great price.” Our Lord received the gold from that Indian, but later found Thomas and gave it to him—the money from the sale. I am telling you the story simply to show you what our God reveals to us. “Yes,” Thomas says, “He bought me, and at a very great price.” The purchase price was immense: we were bought with blood. Yet we sell ourselves so cheaply, for one small pleasure...

For a single carob pod, as the parable of the Prodigal Son presents it so beautifully, a person exchanges Christ, his faith, his mother, his Church, his catechesis, and every human and sacred bond. He aligns himself with Satan, although at Baptism he stood at the font and said, “I renounce Satan, and I unite myself to Christ.” Then, when he grows up, merely to avoid offending this gentleman or that lady, and to escape certain difficulties, he betrays Christ and betrays himself. But when a person refuses to do these things, everything changes. Christ hears him, hastens to him, and draws him out—from the depths, from the sea creature, from wherever they have shut him in, whatever they have made him drink, and whatever they are doing to him. He can be confined in a cell, yet Christ can rescue him from everything. It does not matter if Christ sometimes seems to delay and the soul remains in anguish. I would like to remind you that...

In the boat, the disciples cried out to Christ while He appeared to be asleep in the stern. There are times when you call to Him and He answers at once, “I am here,” and the miracle happens. But there are also times when you call repeatedly and He seems not to hear. It is not that He is absent. He is there, but He has a reason for not answering: as Basil the Great says, it is to make us more earnest in seeking Him and to keep us close to Him. As long as a mother does not give her infant what it desires, the infant stays near her and remains safe. Once it receives what it asked for, it runs off, where a car may strike it or a dog may attack it. Christ often has His reasons for not granting our requests, even when they seem just, reasonable, and beneficial to us.

He may grant them, but only at the proper moment. Our faith and patient endurance must be tested so that we will be able to preserve what He gives us. The world therefore did not succeed in silencing the blind man. Nor can anyone today say, “I truly desire Christ, but the world prevents me.” You must desire Him; I must desire Him. If I conform to the world, I am choosing it. Otherwise, I go around it and cry out even more loudly, as the blind man did. “And Christ stood still,” the passage says. When the man cried still louder, although others told him to stop and be silent, he did not stop. He cried out even more, and then Christ commanded that he be brought near. Do you understand? When you turn on the light, the cockroaches scatter. All those supposed “lords” and “gods” who interfere with the salvation of the soul are cockroaches. They demand sacrifices, but when Christ comes, they vanish. They vanish and swallow their words!

Their words have no power. They cannot stand anywhere. Only the believer can stand firm. As someone once told me, the only person capable of offering consolation and remaining beside another person through every trial is the Christian—the one who has Christ. Another Evangelist adds something that complements the passage from Luke which I am reading to you: when the man heard that Jesus had stopped and was calling him, he threw off his cloak. Let us learn another lesson from this: we must not be materialistic. A merchant loaded down with bundles upon bundles cannot move quickly or throw them aside. There is a story about a shipwreck...

A woman there, who was also an artist, drowned because of the weight of her jewellery. Everyone else was saved, but she took her suitcases and refused to let them go until the end, and so she drowned. All these possessions become weights that hinder a person from going toward Christ. You must throw them aside; you must leave them and free yourself as much as you can. You know that when someone is climbing a mountain—and the ascent toward Christ is a mountain, a Golgotha—the one whose hands are empty climbs more easily. We criticize certain people because they leave things behind, attach little importance to them, refuse to cling to comforts, flattery, and the delusion of this world, and fly away like birds. We criticize them, but they have understood the secret better than we have.

They run more easily, so do not criticize them. People may say, “She is foolish; she goes about like some simpleton. She will gain nothing from it.” Yes, the blind man threw off his cloak so that he could go more easily toward Christ. You too will have to cast off many things if you wish to go toward Christ. You will cast off pleasures and every trap. Papers, coverings, and all those devilish things—you will throw them away. You cannot go to Christ while carrying them. You will not reach the summit. You must cast them off in order to arrive. And when you reach Him, He will ask you, “What do you want?” What did that poor man say? “Have mercy on me.”

Can you go to Christ and say, “Will You make my field produce a good crop?” Ask first for light, and He will take care of the field. Do not begin by begging Him to arrange a marriage for your daughter. Ask Him first to open your daughter’s blind eyes so that she may know Christ, and He will then arrange what is best for her. Do you understand? Christ established the proper order when He said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things”—bread, a roof, clothing, and money—“shall be added to you.” I will give you these things, He says. Do not expect Him to provide them if you are unwilling first to put your soul in order, to deal with your sins, and to have your eyes opened so that you may see where you are, why you came, and where you are going. This is what Christ desires: that you see where He has come, why He has come, and where He awaits you. And if a person...

If a person comes to know only the things his eyes can see—the world and all its contrivances—but does not learn Christ, does not know Christ, and is not born anew with Him, it would have been better for him not to have been born. It would have been better for anyone not to have been born, whether an ordinary person, a poet, a king, an accountant, or whatever else he may be. For the life of this world is nothing compared with the life of the world to come. Let this lesson, together with the one given the day before yesterday about the world, remain with you, and let each person make use of it. It has been expressed in simple words so that everyone may understand. Where there is willingness, everything becomes possible. Where there is no willingness, nothing does. For the willing person there is abundant light; for the unwilling, deep darkness. When a person does not desire salvation, not even God Himself will compel him—the God without whom the creature can do nothing...

Thank you. He came so that we might be made complete and be saved.

Πότε ο Κύριος θα έρθει; Διότι ο άνθρωπος κατά κάποιον από τους δύο τρόπους θα συναντηθεί με τον Δημιουργό, θα συναντηθεί με τον Κριτή. Και πρέπει, εφόσον είναι σε έναν ανύποπτο χρόνο ο θάνατος ή η Δευτέρα Παρουσία του Χριστού, να είναι πάντα έτοιμος και να μην αναβάλλει. Και η αναβολή δημιουργεί σκλήρυνση. Σκλήρυνση. Είναι σαν να επισωρεύεις επί ακαθαρσιών ακαθαρσίες. Όμοια είναι να πάρεις ένα πούπουλο και να καθαρίσεις τη σκόνη η οποία εμαζεύτηκε σήμερα, και το ίδιο είναι να καθαρίζεις ένα έπιπλο που είναι έναν χρόνο, δύο χρόνια, πάλι είκοσι χρόνια, πενήντα χρόνια ακαθάριστο; Είναι το ίδιο; Τα ίδια τα χέρια καθαρίζουν;

Ετοιμάζει. Πόσο δεν σου λέει την αλήθεια, πόσο σε ξεγελάει, πόσο φυσικά φεύγεις και σε πλανά: ό,τι θα υπάρξεις, ό,τι θα δείχνεις, ό,τι θα σκορπίζεις, ό,τι θα επιθυμήσεις, ό,τι θα κάνεις κλπ. Δεν κάνει τίποτα άλλο, μόνο παίζει ρόλο για να σε αμπαλάρει, να σε στείλει στο μεγάλο του βασίλειο, του νου, του σατανά. Ο κόσμος δεν είναι πολλές φορές ο γείτονας, όταν απέρχεται· μπορεί να είναι και μέσα στο σπίτι σου ο λεγόμενος κόσμος. Να κοιτάτε, το σπίτι σου όλο των πονηρών, για να είναι όργανο του σατανά, για να σε πνίγει, να μη σε αφήνει ούτε το χέρι σου να σηκώσεις, να προσκυνήσεις, να μη σε αφήνει να βάλεις το θυμίαμα, να μη σε αφήνει να έχεις μια εικόνα, να μη σε αφήνει να νηστεύεις, να μη σε αφήνει να κάνεις μετάνοια. Θα φύγει να αντιτεθεί σωστά μέσα στον διάβολο, τον κόσμο, μέσα στο σπίτι. Συνεχά μου, τι υπάρχει που καλείται ο άνθρωπος να κάνει;

Πόσο δύσκολο πράγμα είναι να είναι ο άνθρωπος διαφορετικός, να μη συναγελάζεται. «Δεν έχεις αγάπη», που λέει ο ίδιος ο λεγόμενος αδελφός σου. Αυτά είναι ανοησίες. Να έχει διάκριση. Γιατί αυτή η αγάπη πηγαίνει στην άκρη μπροστά στη διάκριση. Αυτό λέγουν οι Άγιοι Πατέρες μας. Παρότι το Ευαγγέλιο λέγει, ο Παύλος, ότι η μεγαλύτερη αρετή είναι η αγάπη και «μείζων δε τούτων η αγάπη», λέμε, η διάκριση. Διάκρισης, αγαπητοί μου, η διάκριση είναι το αγαθό. Λοιπόν, θέμα διακρίσεως εδώ. Τώρα, τώρα· το αύριον δεν είναι δικό μου. Γνωρίζετε, αγαπητοί μου, ότι παρόν δεν υπάρχει. Το γνωρίζετε;

Παρόν δεν έχει στα χέρια του ο άνθρωπος, ούτε μέλλον έχει στα χέρια του ο άνθρωπος. Έχει το παρελθόν; Ούτε παρελθόν, έχει φύγει. Και εσύ το έζησες λίγο σαν σοβαρά. Ό,τι λέω είναι παρόν ή παρελθόν. Ό,τι θα πω είναι στο μέλλον. Πού είναι το παρόν;

«Να πας, τι θα γίνει;» «Ναι», μου λέει, «εκεί έχει», μου λέει, «φαγοπότι και λοιπά. Σαββατοκύριακο δεν θα γίνει. Κι εδώ εκεί», μου λέει. «Δεν υπάρχει ψάρι εκεί πέρα; Η Ήπειρος ολόκληρη δεν βγάζει κανένα χέλι, τίποτα, για να μη φας κρέας;» «Και μπορεί», μου λέει, «είναι έτσι τα πράγματα και λοιπά. Βλέπετε η θέση του συζύγου, και ο σύζυγος πήγε προχθές και έφαγε», μου λέει, «κρέας και είμαστε στα κάρβουνα, δεν ξέρω τι να κάνουμε». Να αρρωστήσεις δηλαδή με το καλό για να μην αρρωστήσεις με το ζόρι και να μην πάρεις την ηρεμιστική. Δεν θα αρρωστήσεις, μπορείς. Δεν θα αρρωστήσεις κι εσύ. Του Κυρίου, θα παρεξηγηθεί από τον διευθυντή, θα παρεξηγηθεί η άλλη, επειδή δεν πιστεύουν σε τίποτα. Τι θα γίνει; Θα ενδώσουμε; Θα ακολουθήσουμε;
