Summary
The Akathist Hymn teaches that Christ, the Creator and divine Shepherd, voluntarily became human out of love to rescue a world unable to save itself. The hymn then addresses the Theotokos as the wall of virgins, presenting her purity and perpetual virginity as a model and protection for those seeking chastity. The Theotokos is praised as the pillar of virginity, the gate of salvation, and the one through whom Christ—the New Adam—came to renew humanity for the Kingdom of Heaven.

Allow me to continue the subject we began some time ago, so that, with God’s help, we may complete it in one or two more talks before this season comes to an end. Those of you who remember will recall that we have been speaking about the Akathist Hymn. We have said that the Akathist is both doctrinal and moral, and that it contains many things we do not understand; we simply recite them or chant them from time to time. So, with the help of the Most Holy Theotokos, let us continue this evening. According to my notes here, we have reached the letter Sigma.
Sigma says: “Desiring to save the world, the Adorner of all came to it of His own accord. And though as God He is the Shepherd, for our sake He appeared as a man like us; for having called like by like, as God He hears: Alleluia.” Here the author says, “Desiring to save the world.” The world was in danger. A person outside Christ is in danger. He is condemned, lost, and perishing. So, out of love, the Adorner of all—that is, He who created the world...
He came to it of His own accord; no one called Him. Sometimes you hear it said that the public prosecutor brought charges on his own initiative, or that the police intervened on their own initiative. That is precisely the meaning here: He came by Himself, without anyone pressuring or compelling Him, freely and willingly. He came of His own accord. Our righteousness did not summon Him, nor did we ever think to cry out to Him, “Will You not come and save us?” We did not even know that we were lost. But He came by Himself, moved by His own loving concern for humanity; He came of His own accord. “And though as God He is the Shepherd”—He is the Chief Shepherd.
He could have remained the Shepherd. But He did not remain only the Shepherd. “For our sake He appeared as a man like us.” He came down to our level. “For having called like by like,” He spoke to His fellow human beings as one of them, so that He might help humanity.
Do you remember—I do not know whether you noticed—what happened when those shepherds went down there to find Him? What did they find? What did they expect when they went down to the cave in Bethlehem? Whom did they go to find? They went to find the One whom the angels were praising. They certainly did not go there merely to find some ordinary man or some insignificant thing; they went to find...
“A mighty King,” and yet they did not find a mighty King. The mighty King had become a little lamb, resting in Mary’s arms. They went expecting to meet one kind of person and encountered another. I am reminding you of what the hymn says. Something similar is being expressed here. It says that, although He was God, the great Shepherd, although He was God...
For our sake He became a man like us: “for having called like by like.” He came and spoke with man as one man speaking to another. He did all this for humanity’s sake, because He desired to save the world. There is no one else who can take on this responsibility and truly be able to save the world. But what is the salvation of the world? Is it deliverance from war? Deliverance from an illness? Deliverance from physical death? What, then, afflicts man? What is the human sickness that requires salvation?
Man needs healing. Can you tell me what is wrong with him? Do you know what afflicts humanity? You must seek the cause in the first man. What did the first man do? He disobeyed. And what did that bring about? He was cut off from God and died. When I turn a switch and cut a lamp off from its source of light, the lamp becomes dead: it no longer shines; it is no longer alive. This is exactly what man did. He cut himself off from God and died. “On the day you eat from the tree, you shall surely die.” This was both the commandment and the warning. Yet man ate and died; he was cut off from God. What entered the world through man’s disobedience? Death entered the world through disobedience.
What is the remedy for death? Life. Life heals death. “Desiring, then, to save the world.” Who desired to save the world? The One who alone is Life. Man does not possess life in himself; he participates in life, just as this lamp is not itself light but participates in light. If the switch is turned off, it will be dead. No one possesses life in himself—not the angels, nor the archangels—except the Lord Himself. Our Church expresses this beautifully and instructively during the Proskomedia, when the priest removes the Lamb from the prosphora to offer the morning sacrifice upon the altar. There the priest says, “Neither an angel nor an archangel, but the Lord Himself saved us from the curse of the Law.”
The sickness of man, then, is death. The healing of death is life. Therefore, He who is Life in Himself—God—comes to give life to man and to save him from death; not from bodily death, not from bodily death. Bodily death was given as a blessing to man who was spiritually dead. For if man had remained immortal in his present condition, if the second death had not come, he would have been wretched forever amid cancers, bleeding, so many illnesses, and so many injuries.
Death was given as deliverance, as a setting in order of the body, so that man might be made new. This second death was given to you as a blessing. Man brought about the first death, the separation of the soul from God. But God permitted the separation of the body from the soul, “so that evil might not become eternal,” as one of the prayers of our Church says—in the Funeral Office, specifically in the prayers for one at the point of death. Take up a Euchologion and read it, and you will find that, in His love, God permitted death—the separation of the body from the soul—so that evil might not become eternal. Man dissolves as though in a crucible, and in the age to come he will be made new again. The sick, the injured, and the disabled will all be raised at one age, the Fathers say: thirty-three years old. Open the Triodion, if you have one; otherwise, go to the Church and read the teaching appointed for...
The eve of the first Saturday of Souls. There you will see, concerning the time before the Judgment, how the matter is understood, what our Church teaches, and what the Fathers believe. He, then, desiring of His own accord to save the world, condescended and came into the world. The Adorner of all, He who made everything, now stooped down to man. Man had wandered away along the paths of sin, so He came down and became man, calling like by like, so that He might help man and save him. Yet man often sends Him away: “I do not want You.” What harm am I doing you, that you do not want Me? Why does man not want God? Because His Law contains many commands saying “Do not” and “You shall not.” Man does not wish to give up the pleasures of the flesh and the delights of the world...
The pleasures and personal advantages he enjoys; nor does he wish to lower the banner of his ego. Therefore, he does not receive Christ. For Christ does not want man to push himself forward; He wants him to follow. He does not allow man to walk ahead of the God-Man, nor does He allow him to walk beside the God-Man. “Whoever desires to come after Me”—neither ahead of Me nor beside Me. But man, in his egoism, thinks he knows everything. We see this even in little children: they know everything, while grown-ups know nothing. As the proverb says, “The fox is a hundred years old, but the cub is a hundred and five.” And so, regrettably, in our egoism we continue to reap these results. He humbled Himself, while we became puffed up. This, then, is what the hymn teaches here: “Desiring to save the world, the Adorner of all”—He who made everything—came “to this” world...
“Of His own accord,” without anyone calling Him. Out of love, He came by Himself to offer man what was truly for his good. “And though as God He is the Shepherd,” He became a simple little sheep—and not merely a sheep, but a lamb. When we say “lamb,” we mean what the honorable Forerunner proclaimed: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” A lamb is destined to be slaughtered. This Lamb, then, was to be slain—and He was slain—and He offered His blood to cleanse us, as a ransom for many. This holy man, the hymnographer, held that entire image within his holy mind. He set these reflections down in just a few words and encompassed the whole doctrine.
Here we also reach the end of what we call the Third Stasis. Our Church has divided the events of the Akathist Hymn into four stases, chanted over four Fridays. The Fourth Stasis now begins with the letter Tau and says the following. It turns toward our Most Holy Theotokos: “A wall are you to virgins, O Virgin Theotokos, and to all who flee to you; for the Maker of heaven and earth prepared you, O Immaculate One, dwelling in your womb and teaching all to cry out to you.” Then there follows a series of salutations beginning with “Rejoice.” So the hymn presents her as a wall protecting virgins: “A wall are you to...”
“Virgins, O Virgin Theotokos.” The central subject is virginity. We heard about the Virgin earlier as well. But now the hymn speaks about Mary and her virginity, saying that she is a wall protecting virgins. As you know, especially in our own day, virginity is regarded as nothing by people in general, whether women or men—though in truth it is something of great worth. Yet the devil, together with man’s departure from the path of God, has succeeded in making people speak contemptuously about virgins, and especially about a virgin woman. And yet...
Since those holy persons who played a part in our salvation were virgins, can virginity truly be worthless? Our young men and women have learned to call it a taboo, part of the establishment that must be torn down. Was Christ wrong to be a virgin? Was the Most Holy Theotokos wrong to be a virgin? Was the honorable Forerunner wrong to be a virgin? Was John the Theologian wrong to be a virgin? And what of all those virgin Saints depicted holding a cross and raising their hand in this way? Do you not see this, woman? Is your name Paraskevi? Go and ask Saint Paraskevi what that cross means and why she holds her hand that way. Is your name Barbara? Go and ask Saint Barbara. Is your name Katina or Katherine? Is your name Kyriaki? Whatever your name may be, go and ask the Saint why she holds the Cross and raises her hand in this way.
The Cross means: “To you, devil, I say no. No to you! I will not yield, whatever you may say to me or offer me.” Have you ever found a hymen in any creature other than a human being? It belongs only to man and woman. Birds do not have one, nor animals, snakes, reptiles, or fish—none of them. Only man and woman have a hymen. The notion that the Creator placed these things in us for no purpose, and that man may disregard and overstep them without consequence, is a grave error. It is a grave error. But Satan, who is cunning and hates creation, Evangelia, works in various ways to undermine this beautiful virtue.
My dear brothers and sisters, if you choose to read what the Saints say about virginity, you will be ashamed—you will be ashamed. Today it is the honorable who are made to feel ashamed, while the dishonorable feel no shame. In the opinion of many, the honorable young woman and the honorable young man ought to be ashamed today, while the shameless person is not ashamed at all. Have you ever heard what the Fathers say about the words of the Most Holy Theotokos, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to your word”? What do they say? “Behold,” she says, “I am like an unwritten tablet, reserved for my Lord alone. Let His word be written upon me. I am ready; I am pure for my Lord alone.” Is today’s bride kept pure for her husband alone? She has wandered through every rubbish heap. Is the young man kept for his wife alone? He has no right to behave otherwise. His body is not his own. “The two shall become one flesh.” By what right can you, a young man, a man, plow through corruption? By what right? You may not have a hymen, but did God’s gift of virginity cost you nothing? Where did you get that idea? And yet this virtue is so deeply misunderstood. I need only tell you one thing, and perhaps your hair will stand on end.
Even now, you will understand what I mean. Four months ago, a young bridegroom sought a divorce and wanted to send his wife away because he discovered that she was a virgin. Have you ever heard of anything so strange? Because he found her to be a virgin! “It is impossible,” he said. “She must be a Jesuit. She cannot be a normal human being,” and so forth. “This cannot be,” he said. The court was appalled when the divorce petition was submitted because the young woman had been found honorable. Do you understand this perversion? Do you understand what kind of age we are living in? What kind of age are we living in?
Has anyone ever considered the value of this virginity? Someone may say, “I had never paid it much attention.” Then how can you sing and chant, “Amazed at the beauty of your virginity and the exceeding radiance of your purity, Gabriel cried aloud to you, O Theotokos”? Tell me, if virginity were nothing—merely a wall we could tear down whenever we wished—how could the Church place it at the center of her worship and chant it in the midst of the Church? That would be impossible in so holy a setting. And yet Satan has succeeded in persuading people that there should be no virginity either before childbirth or after childbirth.
Virginity before Holy Matrimony, and virginity after Holy Matrimony. Someone will say, “What kind of virginity can there be after Holy Matrimony?” It is what the Scripture means by saying, “Let the marriage bed be undefiled.” Let the bed of husband and wife remain undefiled. Let no former lover defile it, and let no new lover appear. Let it remain undefiled. Let the wife belong to her husband and the husband to his wife. This too is regarded as a virtue—a virtue: the undefiled marriage bed. Virginity is a great matter, my beloved. I am not capable of giving this subject the emphasis it deserves. I am not capable. Yet I regard it as something great and beyond my reach; I cannot attain to it. It is, of course, for some people, not for everyone.
Not everyone has the strength for continence. Out of a thousand, perhaps one or two may have it. And you see what a battle erupts when a young woman wants to leave and become a nun. A million may become prostitutes and no one says a word. But if one becomes a nun, it is treated as an enormous affair; the whole world is stirred up. Satan knows the power, the grace, and the blessing she will possess, and what an enemy that nun or monk will become to him tomorrow. It is not for everyone, certainly, but it is for those few—the five, the ten, the thousand. From the warfare Satan wages against it, you can understand...
...how precious virginity is in a human being. I repeat: it is not for everyone. The others must enter into Holy Matrimony. At what age? From the age of twelve. From the day a girl begins menstruating, she is capable of entering Holy Matrimony and should do so.
Instead, she waits until she is forty, and then an entire medical team must be assembled for her to bear a child, leaving her like a sterilized old maid. “Either marry young,” the people of old used to say, “or become a monastic young.” That is what wise people said. But we wait until we have plowed through everything and left nothing untouched, and only afterward do we enter Holy Matrimony—like squeezed-out lemon rinds.
Then we are married. How are you going to bear a child? Oh, she takes vitamins—but still she cannot bear one. I had lunch today in Aigio, where I was a guest. There was a married couple there: she is seventeen, she is pregnant, and she will give birth in ten days. She will give birth as lightly as a little butterfly; the car may not even get her to the hospital in time. Her body has flexibility and the capacity to open; she has her milk—everything. But what can a woman do now after roaming through who knows what, searching for her Prince Charming, and finally getting married? She has a child, but she can do nothing; she will bring forth only complications. How can it be otherwise, when she has spent all her vitality in sin and now comes to Christ, and the priest crowns her, saying, “Crown them with glory and honor”? For what honor? Where did she find that honor? The honor lies in having preserved virginity, but everything has already collapsed; her virginity is like the ruined columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus. A kiss—one kiss—is half of fornication, the Fathers say. Go out into the streets and look at our children. They are our own children.
Go out into the streets and see what is happening. Where is virginity? Where is it? Weddings ought to be abolished. The blessing of Holy Matrimony ought to be abolished, because Holy Matrimony has lost its meaning, and so have the crowns, when there is no honor. “Crown them with glory and honor.” Why? Because they struggled, preserved their virginity, and came into the communion of Holy Matrimony. Crown these courageous young people, then. They are heroes, both the young man and the young woman who struggled. Give them crowns. Otherwise, why give them crowns? In former times, my beloved, crowns were not bought at the market as we buy them now. The Church provides the crowns. She has one pair with which she crowns all her children. In the mountain villages of Evrytania, even to this day there are ceremonial crowns made from vine branches. The Church keeps them simply as symbols. Elsewhere they have iron crowns, and the Church crowns the couple with them. Just as she has a baptismal font in which she baptizes, so she has crowns with which she crowns.
But when you buy your own crowns and hang them up afterward, while your bed is continually defiled both before and after the wedding, what right do you have to crowns? On what grounds do you deserve them? There is no proper understanding of this virtue. That is why you see so many divorces and the condition of homes and families today. Built on such rotten, dishonorable, and corrupt foundations, the home becomes a den—a wolves’ den—and society as a whole has become a jungle. This happens especially because, out of a hundred marriages, perhaps only one or two are arranged through a proper introduction, as we say. The others arise from romantic passion: the couple met, pressed themselves together, embraced, fell into corruption, exchanged their saliva, and so forth. As soon as they marry, there is separation, another lover, or jealousy.
Where, then—where is purity? Here the hymn calls the Most Holy Theotokos the wall of virgins: the wall of those who want to struggle and remain upright and whole, so that they may have God’s blessing both as individuals and as a family, if one day they enter the communion of Holy Matrimony. No one forces anyone to go and become a monk. Let him remain here and establish an honorable family. But let him come to Holy Matrimony honorable and morally upright, able to hold his head high. At the wedding he calls Isaiah to dance: “O Isaiah, dance for joy, for the Virgin...” What virgin? This woman has lived in fornication. Who knows how many things she has done or how many children she has cast away? Why should Isaiah dance? “Dance, O Isaiah”? These things become a lie. If only there were metanoia—repentance—at least. Perhaps we did something in ignorance; perhaps we were led astray, clothed as we are in flesh; perhaps we did not understand, and so forth. Very well—but at least let there be metanoia, repentance.
Let them make their Holy Confession and prepare themselves before going on to celebrate their wedding afterward. Then they will appear differently in the eyes of God. But no—they go on as though they were fine, upstanding people. One recent case even involved a man who intended to become a priest. “I took her,” he said. You took her, yes, but you made her your wife before you actually received her in Holy Matrimony. You are a fornicator, and you are also guilty of taking her unlawfully, because you carried her off. And now you will go and become a priest? Of course you cannot become a priest. Do you know how often such things happen? Out of a hundred weddings, ninety are like this. How, then, can the Most Holy Theotokos help people who at least remain unrepentant? I am not demanding one hundred percent purity—at least let there be metanoia, repentance, instead of remaining unrepentant and claiming the right to dispose of themselves as they please. Dispose of yourself as you wish, then—but tomorrow you will go before the judgment above.
It is a virtue and a joy when people preserve their integrity, whether they are young men or young women, widowers after Holy Matrimony, or widows after Holy Matrimony. In His Church, God has appointed the reward appropriate to each one. There are three states: the state of virginity, the state of widowhood, and the state of those in Holy Matrimony who live in continence after their married life. These are different states. Some will receive thirtyfold, some sixtyfold, some a hundredfold, and some will be condemned to Hell. Consider an honorable couple who entered Holy Matrimony and had children, and whose children were saved.
Our children do not know how to be saved. Our life is so disordered that parents themselves are often the cause of their children’s ruin. But if we suppose that our children were saved, that our Holy Matrimony succeeded, and so forth, then it receives the thirtyfold reward. A couple who enter Holy Matrimony honorably, succeed in bearing children, and lead those children to salvation receive the thirtyfold reward. Another couple may marry, enjoy bodily relations, have children, and see their children saved; but later, when the children have grown and the husband no longer has the natural power to beget children, the spouses begin to live separately in continence. They receive the sixtyfold reward.
These are people who enjoyed bodily relations when they had the full natural right to do so, during the woman’s childbearing years and for the purpose of bearing children. Once the woman could no longer bear children and the purpose of their union had ceased, they lived the rest of their lives in continence. Such people receive the sixtyfold reward. The hundredfold reward belongs to those who preserved themselves in virginity. How many such people there will be, I do not know. There is also another distinction: Heaven for virgins, the earth of Holy Matrimony for those who marry, and Hell for fornicators. These are the three categories. No one is forced to remain in holy virginity. But neither is anyone permitted to dishonor Holy Matrimony. Let him enter Holy Matrimony.
Saint Ignatius the God-bearer says that, before young people run to prostitutes, they should enter Holy Matrimony. But we wait for the young men to acquire apartments, for the young women to acquire apartments, and for them all to become as rich as Onassis before they marry. Virginity, then, is for Heaven; Holy Matrimony is for the earth; and fornication is for Hades.
As greatly as heaven differs from earth, so greatly does virginity differ from the other states. As far as east is from west, so great is the difference. As the sun differs from the stars, so one state differs from the other. That is why the hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos as “the wall of virgins and of all who take refuge in you.” The Theotokos is like a mother hen beneath whose wings the little birds run when Satan pursues them and seeks to bring them into the grasp of sin.
And she protects them. Let our young men and women seek the Most Holy Theotokos as the protectress of virginity, honor, and purity. They have not done so because their parents in particular—the first people responsible for them and their first teachers—did not teach them. They did not tell them how precious virginity is in the eyes of God, whether they later enter Holy Matrimony or not. Nor did they tell them what awaits them if, without God’s law and God’s blessing, they violate this virginity, which God has given uniquely to man and woman, as I said earlier. The hymn therefore greets the Virgin: “For the Maker of heaven and earth fashioned you, O Immaculate One, and dwelt within your womb.” He condescended to come and dwell in your womb. Yet He did not dwell within it...
...by damaging her womb. For as He entered, so He came forth. He entered through her hearing and came forth ineffably, while the seals of her virginity remained intact, her virginity unharmed in childbirth. God, who fashioned the Virgin, preserved her as Virgin, and He Himself remained virgin. The hymn then greets her as the pillar of virginity, saying, “Rejoice, pillar of virginity; rejoice, gate of salvation.” Whenever you find yourself in a difficult moment or in temptation concerning your purity, ask for help, and you will see how God will preserve you. Ask this yourselves, and tell those who come after you as well, so that they may know that anyone who, apart from God’s law, chooses to transgress...
...the boundaries and prohibitions established by God will find himself standing against God. A person today cannot be greeted as the Most Holy Theotokos is greeted in the second phrase: “Rejoice, gate of salvation.” The Most Holy Theotokos opened the door; she became the gate through which we may pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. And you see how she and Christ are depicted together at the Beautiful Gate: she on the right and He on the left. People come there and, through the conjunction of these two persons, pass toward the Kingdom of Heaven. “Rejoice, source of spiritual re-creation.” Truly, the Most Holy Theotokos brought forth Him who re-creates the inner, spiritual human being.
A human being becomes a new creation. The New Adam makes new Adams. All who receive Christ are renewed, and only in Christ do they pass into the Kingdom of Heaven. The person who has not received Christ and has not been baptized has not become a new nature; he has remained the old nature. Such a person has no place in His new Kingdom. He must be renewed and re-created. If anyone wishes to understand this, he must read, as we said in another talk, the third chapter of John: the conversation of our Lord Jesus Christ with Nicodemus. When Nicodemus went by night to meet Jesus, Christ immediately told him that he could not be saved unless he were born from above and became a new creation—that is, unless he were baptized by water and the Spirit.
It is Christ, then, born of the Most Holy Theotokos, who accomplishes this re-creation. “Rejoice, bestower of divine goodness.” The divine goodness is Christ. Through the Most Holy Theotokos, this goodness—Christ—is given to us. Out of love He came to humanity to save humanity. “Rejoice, for you have given new birth to those conceived in shame.” Conceived in shame: it does not say this because conception itself is a shameful act, for Holy Matrimony is honorable. It is not holy in itself, but it is honorable and blessed by God. Rather, it says this because we are conceived bearing ancestral sin. That is why it says, “conceived in shame.” “Rejoice, for you have instructed those whose nous was plundered”—those whose nous, the spiritual intellect, had been robbed by the one who throws understanding into confusion...
You now instruct them in the knowledge of God. For a person who has no relationship with Christ, who has not accepted Him who was born of Mary, is not in his right mind. Satan has robbed him of knowledge. Do you understand? He has robbed him of knowledge. Rejoice, then, you who provide the opportunity for those whom Satan had deprived of knowledge to be born anew. “Rejoice, you who bring to nothing the corrupter of minds.” Who is the corrupter of our understanding, of the mind? Satan. And he is brought to nothing through Jesus, who was born of the Theotokos. “Rejoice, you who gave birth to the Sower of purity.” He is the One who sowed purity...
Honor, moral integrity, and virginity, both in Himself and in His Mother, as an example for mankind. “Rejoice, bridal chamber of a seedless union.” Do you know what a bridal chamber is? It is the room the couple enters after the wedding. So the Most Holy Theotokos is greeted as the bridal chamber of a seedless union: within her, her womb became a bridal chamber in which humanity was united with God without seed. Within that pure bridal chamber, the womb of the Theotokos, soul and God were joined like bride and bridegroom, without seed, without the will of man, but by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary.
“Rejoice, you who unite the faithful to the Lord.” Just as her womb became the chamber in which humanity was joined and united with divinity, and there took place that betrothal of which we spoke earlier—compare the note here—so she also became the means by which man is joined and betrothed to the Lord. A woman is given to a man and joined to him; likewise, man is given to God and joined to Him. “Rejoice, gracious nurturer of virgins.” A nurturer is one who nourishes children. Rejoice, then, gracious nurturer of virgins—not of the dishonorable, but of virgins. “Rejoice, bridal attendant of holy souls.”
That is, through Jesus you give a wedding garment to the souls of the saints. This garment is given to everyone at Baptism. Yet afterward, when we reach twelve, thirteen, or fourteen years of age, God is no longer there for us; there is only our flesh, our ego, and our self-interest. We cast back at Christ this garment of adoption, which He had given us earlier at Baptism, when we said, “I renounce Satan and unite myself to Christ.” Now we turn around and tell Him, “I renounce Christ and unite myself to Satan.” That is what happens. And the passage closes with, “Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.” There is no unwedded bride except in the case of the Most Holy Theotokos. She is a bride, and yet an unwedded Bride. In any case, as we move further down to the letter upsilon...
With humility it says the following: in response to all that God has done for us, “Every hymn is defeated when it strives to match the multitude of Your many mercies.” However much we chant, however much we pray, however much we entreat, however much we give thanks, we accomplish nothing. It is defeated and overcome before what God has done for us, before His many mercies. “For if we offered songs equal in number to the sands”—that is, if we chanted and offered You as many odes as there are grains of sand by the sea...
“We would still do nothing worthy of what You have given us, as we cry to You: Alleluia.” Glory to God. In other words, however many thanks we offer, whatever gratitude we show, however many hymns we compose—even if our odes were as numerous as the sands of the sea—we would still have done nothing, he says. We would have offered nothing compared with what You have done for us. Sadly, as you know, this gratitude toward God is absent from man. He even reaches the point of blaspheming God, the Most Holy Theotokos His Mother, and His saints, and of rejecting Him in many different ways, as you know. But here he says...
Whatever I do, whatever I offer, however much I praise, give thanks, or pray, I do nothing compared with what He has done for me. That is truly how it is, if a person reflects upon it. But in order to measure, he needs a measuring rod; and in order to weigh, he needs the proper scales. Such scales are not sold on earth, for they weigh the things of Heaven. The things of Heaven are weighed on heavenly scales and measured with a heavenly measure. What we applaud as good may not be good in the eyes of God. Do you understand? He continues and comes to the next letter, phi, where he again says of the Most Holy Theotokos:
“We behold the holy Virgin, who appeared as a light-bearing lamp to those in darkness.” In other words, we see the Most Holy Theotokos as a shining lamp for people who are in darkness. Why does he call her this? What does a lamp carry? Here we have a lamp. What does it bear upon it? It bears the wick. The lamp itself does not give light; rather, it is the wick, borne and offered by the lamp, that shines. Christ, then, is the Light who comes through the lamp. This wick, this light, is what illumines the whole world. And now he greets her as light-bearing, because this lamp brings us the Light. “Who appeared to those in darkness”—to people who dwell in darkness.
“We behold the holy Virgin, for she kindles the immaterial Light.” Not material light, but the immaterial Light. She comes into contact with the immaterial Light, with God who dwelt within her. “She guides everyone to divine knowledge,” because light enables a person to see clearly and to walk rightly. Man does not know how to walk. He may possess worldly knowledge and education, yet he still does not know how to walk. Unless he has Christ as his guide—“a light to my feet and a lamp to my paths,” as the Psalmist says of Christ in Psalm 118. Christ is the Light coming into the world, who enlightens every person who desires to be enlightened.
Many people do not want the light of Christ. “I do not like that kind of life. I do not like that kind of virginity. I do not like such things.” People reject them. But the light is there for those who desire it. “For she kindles the immaterial Light.” The immaterial Light, he says, is kindled in the lamp, the Most Holy Theotokos. “She guides everyone to divine knowledge, enlightening the nous with her radiance, and is honored by this cry.” And then he continues to greet her. Christ is the true Light of the whole world. All other lights are artificial lights belonging to this world. However much a person may claim to know, through his own cleverness he may produce the very opposite result. If you want confirmation of this...
Read Proverbs 4:12. There is a way, it says, that appears to lead rightly, but its end leads to the depths of Hades. All the reasoning of the world speaks in this way, and the result, it says, is Hell. Christ must be consulted. “I say this; my lawyer told me that; the uncle I asked told me this; my aunt told me that; my adviser told me this.” But what do You say? He must be asked. He is the Light of the world in every aspect of life, both in matters of the soul and in the life of this world. Christ is not consulted about the most fundamental matters, much less about the details and the smaller things.
We must often be careful, because a small transgression, which a person regarded as insignificant, has become the cause of crime and of destruction both spiritual and bodily—something he did not foresee. For you know how temptation begins and how it develops. Go in summer to a field that is full of dry thorns, and then visit the same field in spring. What will you see? A difference. In spring you can lie down on the fresh green grass. But if you return to the same place in summer, you will find those plants turned into thorns, and you cannot even look at them from a distance. Sin is like this. Man’s failure is like this. In spring he sees everything as harmless, unable to foresee the summer thorns—unable to see that these things will grow into thorns and lead to destruction.
Christ knows. That is why a person must always depend upon Him and place the lamp before him, bearing the Light who is Christ. “My Most Holy Theotokos, intercede with the Lord that He may enlighten me as to how I should act, whether in this way or in that.” Some will say, “I asked Him, but He did not answer me.” You did not ask while standing upright. You asked while already leaning in one direction: “Tell me what to do, but I would like it to happen this way.” When from the outset you are already leaning and saying, “I would like it to happen this way,” then you will receive an answer according to your heart, for the Lord gives according to your hearts. When Christ tells you, “You must put an end to this and tear down the unlawful bed,” you reply, “I did not want to tear it down; I wanted something else.” There we refuse to agree with Him, and that is how you fall into the trap.
There are two things involved here. We want to pull Christ over to our side—to our sin and to our Fall. We want Him to bless us as we are in that condition. Christ does not agree. And so your own will is done, with your destruction as the eventual result. That is what happens. In any case, he then greets her as a ray of the noetic Sun. As a ray. What place do we give the Most Holy Theotokos? And what place do the followers of Zlotianos give her? What do they make her out to be?
A ray stands before the Sun. She is a ray before the Sun, before Christ. Yet the devil has confused them into creating a religion of the Most Holy Theotokos, as though the Most Holy Theotokos herself saves. They say that those who are not found in the school of the Most Holy Theotokos are condemned. They do not say, “Those who are not found in the Church of Christ.”
“Those outside the school of the Most Holy Theotokos are condemned; they will be lost.” Yet the Most Holy Theotokos is a ray, only a ray. A ray stands before the Sun, who is Christ. Do you understand? Do we grasp this? Here especially, our Church teaches us these things. Guard yourselves as much as you can. There is no greater delusion of the ages than this: to succeed in moving us away from Christ, away from the Sun, and toward the ray as though the ray could save us. They claim that the Most Holy Theotokos writes a Gospel, hunts down the devil, drives him into Spain, and so forth. Guard yourselves as much as you can. “Rejoice,” it says, “ray of the noetic Sun; rejoice, beam of the unsetting Light.” The Most Holy Theotokos is a gleam before Christ. Consider the distinction being made here.
This is the order of things. The Most Holy Theotokos is the moon of the noetic firmament. Can there be a moon without the sun? Tell me. Can there be stars without the sun? Tell me. Sun, moon, and stars: Christ, the Theotokos, and the saints. That is how it is. This is the distinction and the correspondence between the material firmament and the noetic firmament. Here, then, he describes the Most Holy Theotokos, who is above the Cherubim, above the Seraphim—above, above, above them all. Yet before Christ, before God, she is “a ray of the noetic Sun, a beam of the unsetting Light.”
Unsetting. It is that light which we went to receive the other day at the Resurrection service: “Come, receive the Light from the Light that knows no evening, from the unsetting Light.” That is, a light for which evening never comes. It is always day. This is what “the Light that knows no evening” means. It has no evening. It is always day. This Light is never extinguished. It is symbolized by the sanctuary lamp that burns continually behind the Holy Altar. This is also what the oil lamp in our home symbolizes. It symbolizes Christ. And woe to those homemakers and householders who replace it with an electric lamp so they will not get oil on themselves, and who thereby fail to show the goodness and mercy of God toward man—or who light it only at certain hours and on certain days.
They leave the oil lamp unlit all week and light it on Saturday. Why? Does Christ not exist on Monday? Does He not exist on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday? The sanctuary lamp should burn continually. Even if it is only a tiny flame, it must remain continually burning. It should never go out, because it symbolizes Christ. And it should be lit by the master of the house, who symbolizes Christ. The woman represents the Most Holy Theotokos, the children represent the saints, and together they form the Church in the home—provided it truly is a Church in the home and not a den of theft or corruption. That is the meaning here. “Rejoice, lightning that illumines souls.” She brought Christ, and with that flash she kindled a fire.
She set souls aflame. “Rejoice, thunder that strikes terror into the enemies”—you who terrify the devil like thunder, thunder against Satan. “When the Most Holy Theotokos hears me, he is lost; he vanishes when she hears me.” But when our own lips, hands, and heart are defiled, how can the power of the Most Holy Theotokos act upon us, so that Satan should perceive her as thunder and flee from before her? “Rejoice, for you cause the many-rayed Illumination to dawn.” What has she not brought us? What knowledge, what assurance, what graces has she not brought? Christ is wholly radiant with light, and He gives graces and blessing to man, both for this life and the life to come. “Rejoice, for you cause the many-streamed River to spring forth.” A River flowing in many streams, bringing every kind of goodness and grace.
“Rejoice, you who portray the type of the baptismal font,” that is, you who symbolize the baptismal font. “Rejoice, you who take away the stain of sin.” She is the one through whom the stain was taken away by Christ, for Christ came to cleanse the world from sin.
Perhaps I have tired you with all that I have said, but I want to believe that, by the grace of God, something will remain with you. Allow me to stop here, at this verse—“you who take away the stain,” and so forth, and “you who symbolize the baptismal font.” God willing, I shall return to the next verse this coming Monday, so that
we may speak about certain events of which we are unaware.

Για το χατίρι το δικό μας, καθ' ημάς άνθρωπος, έγινε σαν και εμάς άνθρωπος, «ομοίω γαρ το όμοιον καλέσας». Και ήρθε και μίλησε με τον άνθρωπο σαν ίσος άνθρωπος. Όλο αυτό το έκανε για το χατίρι του ανθρώπου και θέλων σώσαι τον κόσμο. Δεν υπάρχει κανείς που μπορεί να αναλάβει την ευθύνη και να είναι πραγματικώς σε θέση να σώσει τον κόσμο. Ποια είναι η σωτηρία του κόσμου; Να τον γλιτώσει από τον πόλεμο; Να τον γλιτώσει από μια ασθένεια; Να τον γλιτώσει από τον θάνατο τον φυσικό; Λοιπόν, από τι πάσχει ο άνθρωπος; Ποια είναι η ασθένεια του ανθρώπου, που έχει ανάγκη σωτηρίας;
Ακόμη θα αντιλαμβάνεστε αυτά. Προ τεσσάρων μηνών εζητήθη διαζύγιον από έναν νεαρόν νυμφευόμενον, να διώξει τη γυναίκα του διότι τη βρήκε παρθένον. Έχετε ακούσει παράξενα πράγματα; Διότι τη βρήκε παρθένον. «Είναι αδύνατον», λέει, «αυτή είναι Ιησουίτισσα», λέει, «δεν μπορεί να είναι άνθρωπος νορμάλ» και λοιπά. «Δεν μπορεί», λέει, «αυτό το πράγμα». Και εφρίξαν στο δικαστήριο όταν υπεβλήθη αίτησις διαζυγίου, διότι η κοπέλα ευρέθη τιμία. Καταλαβαίνετε διαστροφή; Σε ποιον αιώνα βρισκόμαστε, το καταλαβαίνετε; Σε ποιον αιώνα βρισκόμαστε;
Δυο πράγματα τέτοια υπάρχουν. Εμείς θέλουμε τον Χριστό να Τον παρασύρουμε στο δικό μας, στην αμαρτία μας, στην πτώση μας. Να μας ευλογήσει εκείνο που είμεθα εμείς εκεί. Δεν συμφωνεί ο Χριστός. Κι έτσι γίνεται το δικό σου, με αποτέλεσμα έπειτα την καταστροφή σου. Αυτή είναι η περίπτωση. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, στη συνέχεια τη χαιρετίζει ως ακτίδα νοητού ηλίου. Ως ακτίδα. Πώς την έχουμε την Παναγία μας εμείς, ε; Πώς την έχουν οι Ζολοτιανές την Παναγία; Πώς την έχουν, ε;
Σας!
