Summary

The lecture resumes its interpretation of the Akathist Hymn, presenting the Theotokos as the vessel of Christ, the Wisdom and Logos of God, through whom divine providence fulfills the plan of salvation. Christ’s light reveals humanity’s eternal purpose and enables repentance, confession, communion, and practical victory over sins once considered impossible to abandon. Biblical examples including Jerusalem’s refusal, Eve’s temptation, and Cain’s rejection of correction illustrate how misuse of freedom resists God’s saving invitation.

In our last talk, the first after the Resurrection, we spoke about Pascha, about “Christ is risen,” and about the events that took place and proved that Christ truly rose from the dead.

Those of you who were with us before Pascha will remember that we had also tried to say a few words about the other part of our subject, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), and that we were interpreting and speaking from the Akathist Hymn. As we said then, the Akathist Hymn is thoroughly doctrinal, though of course it also contains moral teaching, and a person ought to know its content. We gave several talks on it—perhaps four or five, if I remember correctly. A portion still remains.

I thought it would be good to complete this effort, so that we might better understand what we say on the five Fridays of Great Lent, when the service of the so-called Akathist Hymn is celebrated. Looking at my notes, I see that we had stopped somewhere around the letter rho. The letter rho still belongs to the third section, specifically where it says: “Rejoice, vessel of the Wisdom of God; rejoice, treasury of His providence.” In other words, it greets the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) as the vessel of Wisdom.

Many of us confuse the true meaning of the Wisdom of God with a saint named Sophia. For example, in Thessaloniki or Constantinople people say, “We are going to Hagia Sophia.” But this does not mean Saint Sophia, nor is it the church of a saint called Sophia. It is the church of the Wisdom of God. These churches are dedicated to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Wisdom of God, the Word (Logos) of God. Here, then, the hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) as the vessel that received the Wisdom of God within her—that is, Christ, the Word (Logos) of God. “Rejoice, vessel of the Wisdom of God”: the vessel that received the Wisdom of God. “Rejoice, treasury of His providence...”

“...treasury”—that is, a treasury of God’s plans from before the ages. For by receiving Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) revealed and brought to fulfillment all the plans and foreknowledge of God concerning the salvation of man. It is the Mystery of mysteries. Do you remember how the Church has summed up this matter concerning the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy)? What does it say? “Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the Mystery from before the ages: the Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin.” What is taking place is a strange Mystery: what is being fashioned, what plans God had! All these things are brought to fulfillment; they were contained within the providence of God.

They were fulfilled for mankind in the person of Jesus. This is what the author of these words has in mind in this verse. He continues: “Rejoice, showing philosophers to be without wisdom.” Anyone who has tried, through reason, knowledge, or learning, to explain this Mystery—how this young woman received God within herself without seed and all the rest—makes himself look ridiculous, unwise, and foolish. His knowledge can tell him nothing. He can receive these events only through faith; through knowledge alone, he can receive nothing. No matter how educated he may be or how much he may know, he speaks foolishly. These are matters of grace, not matters of knowledge.

They are matters of the heart, not of the nous, the spiritual intellect. And so it says: “Rejoice, showing philosophers to be without wisdom; rejoice, exposing skilled orators as speechless.” Those eloquent people who know how to compose speeches and such things are shown to be ridiculous and without understanding, knowing nothing. For who can explain this conception without seed? Who can explain how God became man through a woman? Who can explain these things? I do not know whether, with God’s help, you are able to follow and see how much meaning is contained in these words, “Rejoice.” Of course, we retain only a summary: we condense them, hear what the priest says, and so forth, but we pass over them superficially.

We keep moving without going deeper to uncover what the hymn says, why it was written, and what it means. Consider this: “Rejoice, for the formidable disputants were shown to be fools.” Those who tried to argue about the mystery of the Incarnation and the divine economy were proved foolish. “Rejoice, for the formidable disputants were shown to be fools; rejoice, for the makers of myths have withered away.” They too were brought to nothing—all who tried to present human explanations for things that are divine. These things cannot be grasped or defined by human words, as I told you earlier, but only by the heart, only by grace, only by faith. Nor did the hymn forget us; it includes us Athenians as well. You remember this, do you not? “Rejoice, tearing apart the intricate webs of the Athenians...”

“...tearing them apart”—that is, overturning and casting aside the elaborate constructions of Athenian logic, the constructions of the learned. “Rejoice, tearing apart the intricate webs of the Athenians; rejoice, filling the nets of the fishermen.” What is a net? A fishing net. And who are the fishermen? The Apostles. Though uneducated, the Apostles succeeded, through the net of the word, in bringing people into salvation, into Christ. The hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) because she is the one who brought Him, and through Him empowered those who caught and fished for men. As I speak now, I am, so to say, continuing the work of the Apostle. I know the position I occupy as I preach Christ.

I am now carrying on the work that they did. Of course, do I do it to the same degree as they did? No, but to a lesser degree, in some small measure, within the limits of my strength. Yet I am doing that work. At this very moment I am fishing, seeking through the word of God to bring people into the net of Christ, so that they may be saved. What the Apostles did then continues to this day.

The work being done at this hour and at other times—in catechism classes, sermons, other talks, readings in the Church, studies of Holy Scripture, and so forth—is the continuation of the Acts of the Apostles, in obedience to the command of Christ, who was born of the Theotokos (God-bearer). That is why, though I do not know whether you have noticed it, the Book of Acts has no epilogue. It has never been brought to a close.

The other books have epilogues and have been brought to a close, but not the book of the Holy Apostles, the Acts. It remains open, as though the writer had paused his account, laid down his pen and paper, and intended to continue writing. Yet he did not, because others would come and continue writing the Acts of the Apostles until the end of the age. It is in this sense, then, that the hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy): “Rejoice, tearing apart the intricate webs of the Athenians”—you overcame them—“and rejoice, filling the nets of the fishermen.” The nets. The fishermen are the Apostles, to whom Christ said: “Leave these things behind, and now I will make you fishers of men.” He said to Peter, “From now on you will catch men alive; you will fish for men.”

These are the fish you will now catch: through your net, through your word, you will bring them into the harbor of God. In the same section the hymn continues to greet her, saying: “Rejoice, drawing us up from the depths of ignorance.” We should picture every person who is far from Christ as lying at the very bottom of ignorance. Such a person lives in ignorance, in boundless darkness. Let him know as many subjects as he wishes; let him fill his head with as much learning as he wishes; let him master all the wisdom of the world. If he has not learned of Christ, if he has not learned of the Son of Mary, if he has not learned of this strange Mystery—that God became the Son of Mary, the Son of Man—then he remains in the depths of ignorance.

The hymn says, “Drawing us up from the depths of ignorance”—you who brought us out of those depths and revealed the true God to us. For only the true God is light, and He brings man into the light. “Rejoice, enlightening many with knowledge”—you who enlighten many with divine knowledge. Not every kind of knowledge truly concerns man or saves him. The one knowledge necessary for man, even though other kinds of knowledge also exist, is to know the true God. What did Christ say? “And this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Him whom You sent.” This is the commandment. If a person does not know the true God...

...he will settle for a god such as one of the twelve we ourselves invented and sent up to Mount Olympus for the summer. Or he will settle for any other god fashioned by man, which is a false god. For you know that idolaters still exist today. They have made gods of their own. They say, “This is what I think; this is how I imagine it. Do not tell me otherwise—I have God here inside me.” Such a person has created his own religion with his own god, and that religion has only Hell. Only the faith of Jesus—the Crucified, the Nazarene—also has Paradise. All other human religions have only Hell. The true faith is the faith of Christ, the Crucified, the Nazarene. This is why you must hold firmly to this point. Do you remember what the angels said to the Myrrh-bearing Women the other day?

“You seek,” they said. Whom do you seek? “Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene.” Three titles, three descriptions were given: Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene. Not just any Jesus, for there were many named Jesus, but Jesus the Crucified, Jesus the Nazarene. For many people, as you know, even to this day believe in God—some in a supreme being, others in a higher power, and others in Christ, but not as God and not as the One who rose from the dead. That is where they stop. When Paul said that Christ had risen, they told him, “We will hear you again about this.” In other words, “Let us stop here.” It seemed ridiculous to them when he spoke of the Resurrection of Jesus. They found it laughable and said, “We can discuss these things again on another occasion. This is far enough.”

They broke off the discussion. Many people like them still exist today. When they reach the point of confessing whether Christ—the One they call God—is truly God and whether He rose from the dead, many leave the discussion unfinished. They may believe in Him as an educator, a great or exalted person, a wonder-worker, or some fakir who went down to India and learned secret arts. They believe a thousand different things, but few believe in Jesus, the Crucified, the Nazarene. This is why the hymn insists on the true God. God has always upheld this phrase, “in truth.” Do you remember His meeting with the Samaritan woman, when their discussion turned to doctrine? “We must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Can a person who does not have the grace of the Holy Spirit worship Christ rightly and, through Christ, worship God? For God is worshipped through Jesus. “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” Such a person does not truly receive Christ. This is why Jehovah’s Witnesses and others do not receive Christ. Nor do the Protestants, the so-called Evangelicals, who claim such zeal for Christ, truly receive Christ. Neither do they receive the Holy Trinity. You should understand this. What do they accept? One man said to me, “Is God a monster? Does He have three heads? The Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) gave birth to Christ, so she should be called Christotokos, the Birth-giver of Christ.” But she is not called Christotokos; she is called Theotokos (God-bearer), because He is Emmanuel, “God with us.” Even these Protestants, who claim such zeal for the Gospel and say they believe in Christ, neither worship nor acknowledge the Holy Trinity.

You must understand this. Here, then, the hymn insists upon the true God—the true God.

“Drawing us up from the depths of ignorance”—out of those depths. “Rejoice, enlightening many with knowledge”—giving them true knowledge. And you have heard what the Doxology says: “In Your light we shall see light.” Without light, can you see the light or possess light? Only through the light. Without Christ you have no light—the real light, the true light that comes into the world. “He enlightens every man”—every man who is willing. When you hear “every man,” add in parentheses, “who is willing.” For those who are unwilling, there is darkness; for those who are willing, light. At the same moment it has this twofold effect: for those who are willing, what we are discussing is radiant light; for those who are unwilling, it is deep darkness. From the very outset they reject it and accept nothing at all.

So he greets the Most Holy Theotokos. She is the one who brought the true light and delivered people from ignorance, from the darkness in which they lived, and from idolatry. She enabled them to understand that their purpose is not limited to this earth. By coming down into the world, Christ gave people meaning, substance, and direction. He enlightened them to know where they came from, why they came, and where they are going. For man has a purpose. Everything that exists here has some purpose. This lectern is here to serve the speaker. This microphone is here to transmit sound. This is for writing, the chair is for sitting, water is for washing, and light is for giving light. Everything has a purpose. Does man alone have no purpose?

Does man have no purpose? How can all these things have been made for man, while man himself has no purpose? And yet many do not know that they have a purpose in this world, or that they will be called to account in the world to come. Whether they like it or not, one day they will stand face to face with the Creator, with Him whom Mary brought into the world. This is why the hymnographer greets her with such spiritual insight—for he was a deeply spiritual man—calling her the one who brought Him who drew us up from the depths of ignorance. “You who draw us up from ignorance”; she drew us out. “Rejoice, you who enlighten many with knowledge,” giving them the knowledge they need to recognize their true purpose. Even in a small way, each of us can confirm this from experience. I do not know how you lived or when you returned to Christ. But I believe that man is rather like influenza: influenza runs its course. No doctor and no medicine can stop it. We often hear doctors say, “It must run its course. Hold on, stay in bed, and take care of yourself.” Man is like that.

Very few—almost none—have kept the garment of their Baptism pure. All the rest of us soiled it and later returned. For a time we lived in darkness. We went far from our Father’s house. We became prodigals. We lived through times of ignorance. Paul says this about others; Paul himself says it. He said it here when he came to Athens: “The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.” He acknowledges that you Athenians lived in ignorance: you worshiped stones, fashioned unknown gods, and so forth. But now that I have arrived, I have brought the light. From this point onward, God has appointed a day on which He will judge us all, and the One who will judge is Christ. So when the grace of God granted us the opportunity, while He waited for us, and we returned, practiced metanoia, made our confession, and began to...

...receive Holy Communion and so forth, tell me: do we not now see things differently? Things we once thought we could never give up, things we considered impossible—when we thought that the Gospel was impossible and Christ’s commandments were impossible—how is it that we now manage to do them? Do we not see it now? “Goodness, what were we saying? What were we saying?” We stood outside and declared that these things were impossible. Were they really impossible? I, who never fasted; I, who said, “I will never give up that man,” or, “I will never give up that woman”; “I will never stop blaspheming”; “I will never give up gambling,” and so forth—how did you give them up? Do you see now? You see that these things are possible. Even if you have achieved only a little, you have achieved something, and if you struggle, you will achieve still more. That is the point. We have personal experience of this knowledge and this light. Christ is the One who gives light to man and says to him, “This is the way. This is what you must do, and I will help you.”

You must be willing. And in this passage he continues by greeting her in these words: “Rejoice, secure ship of those who desire salvation.” An olkas is a ship—a safe, sturdy ship. He greets her as the ship that...

All who enter it—all who are willing and enter it—will be saved. According to Saint Isaac the Syrian, we are crossing a storm-tossed sea. How many will reach the end, I do not know. Most will be shipwrecked along this journey into eternity. For, as you know, our life here is only a passage. We are sojourners, and we will pass on. We will not remain here. We have no abiding city here.

We seek the city that is to come. We are not permanent inhabitants of the earth; we are tenants here, as we have said before. Man came here in order to die, and he dies in order to live. He did not come merely to live here, as some say. And death is not the end. It is the beginning of another life, the true life, which has no end. Here, then, the Most Holy Theotokos is presented as a ship, and all who enter this ship will be saved. Yet the Most Holy Theotokos is not herself the ship in an absolute sense. She brought the ship; she brought the lifeline, who is Christ. Christ is the One through whom all who cling to Him will be saved. Christ is the saving raft—but man must be willing. The hymn puts it beautifully: “Rejoice, secure ship of those who desire salvation.”

People are not saved because they do not want to be saved. The teaching of Jesus stands against their flesh, their pleasures, their egotism, and their self-interest; they do not want such a Christ. Do you understand? That is why they will not be saved. If man could truly understand the words “I will”—what this power of willing really is—he ought, on the one hand, to stand in awe of the power God has given him, at least in this world, and at the same time to recognize the responsibility he bears for this free will. For “I will” is free will. “I do not want You, Lord.” “Very well, My child; we will not quarrel. It is up to you.” Man is a person.

Man possesses a power—and I do not want you to be scandalized, but I will say it. Do you know what power? A power greater, in this sense, than that of the Holy Trinity.

“I do not want You, Christ,” man says, and then he even blasphemes Him. “Very well, do not want Me. Go, get some fresh air; take a walk in the countryside. It makes no difference. We will discuss these things later, when we meet. For now, while you are in this world, you are free.” This freedom, this free will that God has given man, binds God’s hands and makes God appear weaker than man. For, I repeat, when everything reaches its end and the scene changes, then the justice of God will be revealed and will shake us as a dog shakes a hare after catching it. The dog has run until its tongue hangs out in order to catch the hare; now that it has caught it, it shakes it. In the same way, the justice of God will shake us, because today the justice of God is not yet acting in its fullness.

It will act beyond the grave. Yet, with the help of Satan and our own egotism, we stake everything on the belief that it either does not exist or has no power. It both exists and has power, but God is longsuffering and gives man the opportunity to decide when he will be willing. God helps him: at times He pulls his ear, frightens him from one side, or strikes at his feet from the other with some affliction, hoping to bring him in—hoping that he may become willing to come in, that he may finally be willing. Man’s will is what makes it difficult for God to act, because man does not want Him. God does not coerce anyone. Otherwise, who could force a man inside by violence? No; only if he is willing. That is why you see Him ask, “Do you want to be made well?” He asks, “Do you want it?” Who would not want his eyesight?

Who would not want his health? “If you want it; I do not compel you.” Yet many people do not want it. Indeed, have you not often noticed people in a very difficult situation, dependent upon someone else in a matter of great importance, who say, “I want nothing from that man. I would rather die; I would rather shine shoes in Omonia Square. I want nothing from him”? You know that such things still happen today. “I want nothing from Christ.” They bear malice toward Christ. They do not want Christ. They have become so possessed by Satan that they do not want Christ. And you know, Christ withdraws. For the present, He steps aside. “Go on, then, my brave fellow. Very well, you do not want Me. Tomorrow you will find the consequences before you. Whatever you sow, that you will reap.” This is why, even today, people who by every outward indication ought to have been saved are not...

...saved: within themselves they do not have this love for Christ. They do not want Him, they do not acknowledge Him as their Savior, and they do not receive Him. There Christ finds it difficult to act; He cannot act, because He Himself gave man this freedom, this free will. You know, it reflects one of God’s three infinite attributes, for man was made in the image and likeness of God. Do you remember what Satan appealed to in Eve back then? What did he appeal to? He told her, “If you eat from this, you will become God.” And if you become God, you will be almighty, all-knowing, and eternal. These are aspirations that man carries within himself: to become mighty in Christ, wise in Christ, and eternal in Christ. And you see these three tendencies in us: we magnify our power until we want to govern everything at the touch of a button.

We want to know everything, even what is happening in the galaxies, and we labor to find ways not to die. These are the three aspirations corresponding to attributes that God possesses infinitely and man possesses in a limited measure. Satan appealed to these, and man misused his freedom. God did not compel him. Indeed, He even helped him toward metanoia, just as He later did with Cain. In Cain’s case this was even more explicit. God stood in his path beforehand to prevent him from committing the crime. Nevertheless, Cain pushed God aside and committed the crime, watering the virgin earth for the first time with a brother’s blood. Afterward, God again tried to help him: “Where is your brother?” He asked, so that Cain might repent. Yet once again, by his own free choice, Cain accepted neither the warning beforehand nor the exhortation afterward to repent. That is why those who remain outside to this day...

...remain there because they do not want Christ. The moment they desire Christ, Christ assumes all their debts, every promissory note, every stain, and every unresolved matter, and settles them all with a single stroke of the pen. It is not difficult for Him. He asks for no payment, no applause—nothing. Moved by love for His creature, He puts everything in order. Therefore, those who have still not entered remain outside because they do not want to enter. I mention this from the Gospel so that no one may ever say, “Why me?” It is because you do not want Him. The only exception might be some extraordinary case in which God wills matters to remain so because, for the time being, it is for your benefit. But in most cases, it is because we do not want God involved.

There are two examples in the Gospel. We heard one on the evening of Great Tuesday, when Christ delivered what we might call Jerusalem’s funeral lament. Do you remember? It is in the twenty-third chapter. If you do not remember, when you go home, open the Gospel according to Matthew to chapter twenty-three, and you will find Jerusalem’s funeral lament. Christ stood and said to her: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing.” He did not say, “You were unable.” Therefore, let no one ever say, “I cannot give this up.” You do not want to give it up. You do not want to tear down the unlawful bed. You do not want to stop stealing. You do not want to. You do not want to. “I cannot” carries no weight with God, because God has said:

“Nothing will be impossible. Take Me beside you, and you will see how you can do all things.” But you do not want to stop this lawlessness. I remember the case of a woman who was living unlawfully with a driver. I finally managed to approach her and said, “Would you not rather become a washerwoman than continue doing what you are doing? For this is what your life amounts to.” She replied, “It is wrong, but what can I do? I cannot end it.” “Do you want to? I will show you how to end it.” “But I have no strength for the struggle, I have no...” “Do you want to?” “And how will you live?” I asked. “Become a washerwoman and earn your living. I do not care whether you dress in white or have forty outfits in your wardrobe while living as a prostitute. How can all those clothes conceal a life of prostitution and dishonor?” What was the truth? She did not want to.

Years passed before her thinking began to cast all that aside. She began to wither, and the man began to mistreat her, so she was forced to return. Fortunately, she practiced metanoia and returned, made her confession, and I believe she has now reposed and, in some measure, was saved. For ten years, then, she did not want to, and therefore she could not. But if I say to Christ, “My Christ, I want to. I cannot do it, but I truly want to,” everything changes. It changes at once. He is right there, waiting to help. But we do not want to, because we think of the pleasures we enjoy. If we put an end to the sin that so easily carries us along, provides for us, feeds us, and gives us status, then we will have to humble ourselves, work, and do without certain things. So our attitude becomes: “We do not want You, Lord Jesus Christ, if You are going to make us do such things. We do not want You.” This clearly happens...

...especially today, even in Christian families. We do not want the Most Holy Theotokos either. Let some young woman in a medical uniform, or some lady going to buy fabric for a dress, tell me that she took the Most Holy Theotokos with her when she went shopping. In effect she says, “My Lady, Most Holy Theotokos, this is none of Your concern. I am going now to buy jeans that show off my figure.”

Shall I have to bring you to your knees by a miracle before I ask you? When dressed as a servant or a nurse, you say, “Come with me, Most Holy Theotokos.” But not when wearing immodest clothing. “Stay outside now, Most Holy Theotokos. I do not want You near me.” For if someone sincerely turned and said, “Will You come with me, Most Holy Theotokos, while I go shopping?” she would be struck with fear and compunction there in the shop. She does not want the Most Holy Theotokos. She does not want Christ—on the street, at work, or at home. She does not want Him. He said it plainly: “You were not willing.”

There are many different voices, because naturalists say, as I have told you before, that a hen has nine different calls.

When all is well, you hear her going along, “Cluck, cluck, cluck.” She finds a worm: “Cack, cack, cack,” and the chicks come running. She sees a hawk: that is another call, a different voice. “I spoke to you,” He says, “in every kind of voice. I sent you prophets; I sent you this person and that; I did one thing for you and then another; I even permitted captivity—and still you were unwilling.” And in John 5:39, a passage many people interpret incorrectly, He says this to the Jews: “Search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life.” Search the Scriptures, He says, because you think that these Scriptures contain eternal life.

“And these are they which testify of Me.” They speak about Me. “And you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life.” You think that simply by reading what the Scriptures have written for you, you possess eternal life. No. Holy Scripture is not eternal life. Eternal life is the person of whom Holy Scripture speaks. And Holy Scripture speaks of Me, Christ says, yet you do not want Me, so that you may have this life. You do not want Me—that is the matter. Why does a person today reject the Gospel? Why does the young woman reject the Gospel? Why does the lady reject the Gospel? Why does the merchant reject the Gospel? Because it exposes their sinful way of life.

So a person does not want Christ because He calls him to fasting and self-restraint; He calls married people to bear children and the merchant to be honest, and so forth. That is why he rejects Him and pushes the Gospel aside. Yet in court he may even swear upon it. That is the matter. There is something else I want you to know, so that you may never lay the blame on Christ, but upon yourself—and so that I may lay it upon myself. If I remember correctly, it is found in the fifteenth chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach. Read the final verses. There man is presented as possessing free will, as being free, and it says: “He has commanded no one to act impiously, nor has He given anyone permission to sin.” God neither told anyone to act impiously nor helped anyone to sin. There was water.

Here was fire, and here He placed water. “Stretch out your hand toward whichever you desire.” Do you want to put your hand into the fire? Then accept the consequences. Do you want to put it into the water? You are free. This reveals man’s free will and freedom. If, then, you have been burned by this life and depart from it scorched, it is because you yourself placed your hand in the fire and followed the road that leads to destruction. If you were saved, it is because you yourself, in your freedom, placed your hand in the water and chose it. And if you have fallen, it is in your hands whether you rise or remain fallen. You are human. “To fall is human; to persist in the fall is satanic; to rise again is divine,” says John Chrysostom. The hymn puts it beautifully, presenting her as “a ship for those who desire salvation.” Those who enter that ship will be saved. And the captain of the ship is Christ.

When a person has Christ in his ship, he is secure. For you know the wisdom spoken by David: “Yea, though I walk through the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.” I will go even into Hell with Christ, provided that I have Christ in my ship. For the presence of Christ will turn even Hell into Paradise. With Christ, I will go even into Hell. A person must either bring Him into his little boat or enter the ship of Christ. Do you know what Christ’s ship is? The Church. The Church. Open the Rudder of the Church to its first page, and you will see the ship.

There are the Apostles, with Christ at the stern—or rather at the bow, holding the helm—with the sail above bearing the Cross, and the ship journeying toward eternity. All who enter this strong and secure vessel, this ship which is sometimes covered by the waves but rises again to the surface, will be saved, because they have Christ at their bow.

They will be saved. But those who, for one reason or another, live out their lives here without desiring either the captain, Christ, or His Church as the ship of salvation, will perish along the paths of their own pride. They will perish. For the way by which man returns to Paradise—since, as we said earlier, here we have no lasting city but seek the one to come—is the Church.

Through the Church, man returns to Paradise. And the man who does not have the Church as his mother has neither Christ as his brother nor God as his Father. To have God as your Father and Christ as your brother, you must have the Church as your mother. Those who do not enter the Church, this spiritual vessel—what shall we call it?—this ship, will remain outside, because they imagined that they could return by their own way. In the service for the day of our death, we say: “May I also find my way through metanoia, through repentance.” And in another verse it says: “Make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” If I am to become a citizen of Paradise again and go there, man can return only through the means Christ has given:

the Church. That is why Christ sends the Church to receive each person as a newborn entering the world. The priest must be called at once to offer the prayers of the Church over the newborn who has come into the world. The Church receives a person through her prayers, and the Church sends him forth again to become once more a citizen of Paradise, again through the Church and through her prayers: “Blessed is the way in which you walk today.” Therefore, let us never accuse God. We were unwilling to listen to what He says. A child who refuses to listen to his parent, his spiritual father, or his teacher will inevitably be shipwrecked along the paths of sin. And the same is true more generally of people in this matter. So the hymn greets her: “Rejoice, O ship”

“of those who desire salvation. Rejoice, O harbor for those who sail upon the sea of life.” “Rejoice, O harbor for those who sail upon the sea of life.” Who are these voyagers upon life? We are, sailing in the midst of this sea. Christ is my harbor. In Him people find rest. Satan is like a fishhook. He gives you a moment of pleasure, a little sweetness from the carob pod of sin, but afterward it makes you vomit. You quickly come to spit upon that very pleasure. Eat too much, and you will vomit. Drink too much, and you will vomit. Gamble, and you may kill yourself; you will even sell everything you own. Let a woman betray her husband, or a man his wife, and afterward they will spit upon that pleasure. Take any example you wish. The soul finds no rest. The only One who gives rest to both soul and body is Christ.

That is why He says elsewhere, “Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden.” Some people do return to Christ, but on their own terms. They do not entrust everything to Him and let Him take charge. Christ sees whether we have handed Him the whole case, whether we have placed our complete trust in Him, and He acts accordingly. Many return while still holding something back. Do you know what “I believe” means? It means, “I surrender myself.” To believe means to surrender. My own will no longer prevails. A person who falls into the sea stretches himself out upon the water as though dead, and the sea does not pull him under. Yet man does not trust Christ in this way.

“Yes, but...” Always “but.” “We do this, but we are only human.” The Christian is not merely human; the Christian is more than human. And those who do not surrender themselves entirely to Christ... In the Old Testament, in 2 Chronicles 16:9, if I remember correctly, it says: “The eye of God ranges throughout the earth, that He may show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him.” God says, “The eye of God ranges throughout the earth, that He may show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward Him.” Have you ever watched a plant facing the sun?

It gazes straight at the sun all day long. As soon as the sun leaves it, it closes up. It does not appear to look at anything else. It waits for morning, to see the sun again. But man does not do this—rational man does not do it. All these things have been given to teach us. And do you remember how God shows us this? He was about to bring the Flood and destroy everyone. Yet no—this household, this family, was upright and had not disobeyed. So He brought the old man Noah and his family safely out. He was about to burn Sodom and Gomorrah for their sin, their sexual immorality, their unnatural lust, which today has flared up to such a degree, even among married couples—and woe to us. It is a day of judgment if there is no sincere metanoia, repentance, and confession. His eye ranged over the land and found the family of Lot.

Plainly, He did not burn Lot. In the first case, some cunning person might say that God spared Noah because He wanted to preserve human seed and create the rest of humanity again. As though God could not have created everything anew out of nothing! But what did He intend the second time, O Lord? Why did He not destroy Lot along with the others? Because the eye of His justice found that Lot was a whole and upright man and should not perish with them. Yet again there was a loss. His wife perished, and only Lot and his two daughters were saved. His wife perished because she was curious and turned back to see what was happening to the buildings of Sodom and Gomorrah. She became a pillar of salt, which remains to this day. Such is God. But He wants man to give himself to Him completely. “Yes, Lord, I have made a mess of everything. Yes.

Take this tangled skein of my life and set it in order.” We human beings have tangled this skein into a Gordian knot that no one can untie. We often hear people say, “As things now stand, there is nothing left for me. My life cannot be set right. There is no solution to my problem,” and so on. They see a precipice ahead and a torrent behind. Do not say that. In doing so, you become a great blasphemer, because you blaspheme Christ’s omnipotence and portray God as weaker and Satan as stronger. For if the devil, who led you or me into sin, has managed to overcome God’s mercy and omnipotence, then God can do nothing. And many people do not return

because of this reasoning of their own, this thought that nothing can be done now that matters have reached such a state. I do not know whether I have ever told you this story. But since the woman is doing very well now, I will tell it. Many years ago, I was giving a talk at the Church of Saint Artemios. One evening, after I had finished, I was walking home late at night toward Pangrati, where I lived. A woman of about thirty-five or forty came out and began telling me things through her tears. “Everything you said tonight was meant for me,” she said, “but nothing can be done. I cannot be saved.” “Why?” I asked. “So long as your breast still rises with breath, this is Christ’s guarantee that He is waiting for you.” “But if you heard my situation, Mr. Panagopoulos, you would know there is no solution for me.” “Even if I hear your situation, I will not be able to solve it.

But I trust Christ: since He has kept you alive until now, it means that He can solve your problem.” “Impossible,” she said, and began to weep. “Do not cry or press me like this. I am telling you: leave your case in Christ’s hands.” “My case cannot be resolved,” she said. “I am lost and condemned to Hell, judging by what I heard tonight and last Wednesday, when I also came to hear you.” “Shall I tell you my story?” she asked. “I do not want you to tell me anything. Keep your secret. I am not curious, and I will not humiliate you. Keep it to yourself. I do not have the medicine, but I know the pharmacist, and I recommend Him to you.” She walked with me as far as the Church of the Holy Apostles. Then I asked her:

“Do you pray?” “I do,” she replied. “Tonight you will not say your usual prayers. Go home, to the place where you live, kneel down, and say: ‘My Christ, tonight I heard these things from Panagopoulos. As You know, I told him this much, and he said there is a solution. But I cannot see any solution. Yet if You have a solution, I am willing to accept it and glorify Your name. Deliver me from the anguish of sin and set me free.’ That is what you will say.” She did not even have the strength to promise me that she would say it. “I have nothing else to tell you. I repeat: say these words, and let Him find the way. Nothing more.” I left her and went on, because I had reached the limit of how far I could walk with her. I did not want anyone saying, “Who is this woman Panagopoulos is leading around, weeping beside him?” I did not want to scandalize anyone, since people did not know who this woman was. I left and went home, and she went to hers. How could I know what she did? This was on a Wednesday.

The following Wednesday, as usual, I came here to speak. When I had finished, I again set off in that direction. I had completely forgotten the whole affair. And there she was again. She had also been in the audience that evening. She came up and caught me. “Good evening, Mr. Panagopoulos.” “Good evening, madam.” “A miracle has happened. A miracle!” “Go home and glorify God.” “Let me tell you,” she said. “I do not want you to tell me. I believe in miracles and in the miracle-worker, and He is the One I pointed you toward. If a miracle has happened, let it be a lesson to you. Use it to strengthen someone else whom Christ will surely bring to the bow of your ship—someone whom Satan has driven to despair by convincing him there is no solution.” “But let me tell you.” “I do not want you to tell me. I do not even want to know who you are. I do not want to learn anything, so that you will not be humiliated by revealing what happened to you, and I will not be scandalized. Do I know this woman? Do I know who she is?” So I left her and went on my way.

Seven years passed. One day, some people invited me to lunch. “Come over at noon and have lunch with us,” they said, and so on. I went; their house was nearby, by the First Cemetery. After we had eaten lunch, the lady took me aside. “May I tell you something?” “And do you want to tell me in private?” “Yes,” she said, “in private.” “All right, let’s go into the next room.” “I want to tell you a secret,” she said. “What secret? Tell me.” “Something you would want to know.” “I’m not sure I would want to know. In any case, tell me, before you burst from keeping it in.” Then she said, “Wouldn’t you like to hear about a certain woman at Saint Artemios—the one with this and that problem, and so on?” “No,” I said, “I would not. She herself wanted to tell me, and I refused to listen—before or afterward—and I do not want to hear it now either.” “But,” she said, “you must hear it.”

She approached it this way and that, trying to persuade me. I thought to myself, perhaps I should listen so that I may see the method—not to learn what had been happening, because that did not interest me. Any number of things can happen to us human beings. What interested me was the method—that is, the all-wise providence of God. In the end I gave in and said, “Tell me.” The woman was a widow. She had married brothers, and they all shared a courtyard surrounded by rooms. The family lived in some of them and rented out the others. One of the rooms had been rented to a driver, and this lady was sleeping with him. But when she heard the teaching and understood the true state of things, she came to her senses. Yet how could she escape from him?

He threatened to put it in writing and publicly disgrace her before her brothers, her brothers-in-law, and the others. They could not evict him, because he was protected by rent control and paid a hundred drachmas. He worked as a driver and would not leave. So, under that pressure, she gave in and continued to sin, unable either to drive him away or to free herself from him. Humanly speaking, it was a difficult situation. It could not easily be resolved. She prayed that night. The next morning, the man, who delivered oranges, took his truck and set out toward Athens. I do not know where he was going. When he reached Hadrian’s Gate, another truck was coming from Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, and they collided head-on like two rams, one climbing up over the other.

The man involved in our story was terrified because he thought the accident was his fault. He jumped down, abandoned the truck, and vanished from the face of the earth. The traffic police could not find him. He never returned for his belongings or for anything else—nothing. One month passed, then two, then three, and still nothing. To this day, he has never appeared again. Christ removed him from her path, and afterward they rented out the rooms he had occupied for half a gold sovereign. That is Christ. Who could ever have imagined such a thing? Yet who is willing to accept that Christ does everything to save the human person? And so people remain where they are, because they cannot comprehend it; they cannot understand what this truly is. These, more or less, are the doctrinal teachings we have covered

up to this point. But we must stop here and, God willing, with the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, continue on another evening.

...θα σταθεί σε έναν θεό, φερ’ ειπείν, εκ των δώδεκα που είχαμε φτιάξει εμείς και τους είχαμε στείλει και στο ξεκαλοκαίριασμα στον Όλυμπο. Ή, ξέρω εγώ, σε οποιονδήποτε άλλο θεό που φτιάχνει ο άνθρωπος, που είναι ένας ψεύτικος θεός. Γιατί, ξέρετε, και σήμερα υπάρχουν οι ειδωλολάτρες. Έχουν φτιάξει δικούς τους θεούς. «Εγώ νομίζω, εγώ φαντάζομαι, μη μου λες εμένα τώρα, εγώ μέσα εδώ έχω». Έχει φτιάξει δική του θρησκεία με δικό του Θεό, που αυτή η θρησκεία έχει μόνο κόλαση. Μόνο του Ιησού, του Εσταυρωμένου, του Ναζαρινού, έχει και Παράδεισο. Όλες οι άλλες θρησκείες, οι ανθρώπινες, έχουν μόνο κόλαση. Η αληθινή θρησκεία είναι του Χριστού, του Εσταυρωμένου, του Ναζαρινού. Γι’ αυτό πρέπει να στέκεστε στο σημείο αυτό. Θυμόσαστε προχτές τι είπανε οι άγγελοι στας Μυροφόρους;

Χαιρετίζει, λοιπόν, την Παναγία μας. Είναι αυτή που έφερε το πραγματικό φως και έβγαλε τους ανθρώπους από την άγνοια, από το σκοτάδι που ζούσανε, από την ειδωλολατρία. Τους έδωσε να καταλάβουν ότι ο προορισμός τους δεν είναι μόνο για εδώ, τη γη. Κατερχόμενος ο Χριστός στον κόσμο έδωσε νόημα στους ανθρώπους, περιεχόμενο στους ανθρώπους και οδηγία στους ανθρώπους. Τους εφώτισε να μάθουνε πούθε ήρθανε, γιατί ήρθανε και πού υπάγουν. Διότι ο άνθρωπος έχει προορισμό. Κάθε τι που υπάρχει εδώ έχει κάποιον προορισμό. Αν αυτή η έδρα υπάρχει εδώ, είναι για να εξυπηρετεί τον ομιλητή. Αν αυτό το μεγάφωνο είναι για να μεταδίδει. Αν αυτό είναι για να γράφει, η καρέκλα για να κάθεται, το νερό για να πλένεται, το φως για να φωτίζει. Όλα έχουν προορισμό. Ο άνθρωπος δεν έχει προορισμό;

Θα ενεργήσει πέραν του τάφου. Και εκεί εμείς ποντάρουμε, με τη βοήθεια του σατανά και του εγωισμού μας, ότι δεν υπάρχει ή δεν δύναται. Και υπάρχει και δύναται, αλλά μακροθυμεί και δίδει ευχέρεια στον άνθρωπο πότε θα θελήσει ο άνθρωπος. Τον βοηθάει, του πιάνει καμιά φορά τ' αυτί, τον φοβερίζει από εδώ, του χτυπάει τα πόδια από εκεί με κανένα τσεκούρι και λοιπά, μήπως τον φέρει μέσα, μήπως θελήσει να έρθει μέσα, μήπως θελήσει. Το θέλω του ανθρώπου είναι που δυσκολεύει τον Θεό να ενεργήσει, διότι ο άνθρωπος δεν θέλει. Δεν εκβιάζει κανέναν. Διαφορετικά, με τη βία τον άνθρωπο ποιος θα τον βάλει μέσα; Όχι, εάν θέλει. Γι' αυτό βλέπετε: «Θέλεις υγιής γενέσθαι;» Ρωτάει: «Θέλεις;» Ποιος δεν θέλει τα μάτια του;

Αλλά. Ναι, αλλά. Κάνουμε αυτό, αλλά άνθρωποι είμαστε. Ο Χριστιανός δεν είναι άνθρωπος, είναι υπεράνθρωπος ο Χριστιανός. Και οι άνθρωποι οι οποίοι δεν παραδίδονται τελείως στον Χριστό... Στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, στο Χρονικό 19, αν καλώς ενθυμούμαι, λέγει το εξής: «Ο οφθαλμός του Θεού περιτρέχει τη γη, ίνα φανεί δυνατός εις τους έχοντας την καρδίαν τελείαν προς Αυτόν». Ο Θεός λέει: «Ο οφθαλμός του Θεού περιτρέχει τη γη, ίνα φανεί δυνατός εις τους έχοντας την καρδίαν τελείαν προς Αυτόν». Έχετε δει ένα φυτό, τον ήλιο;

Από δω το έφερε, από κει το έφερε. Είπα μέσα μου, λέω, μήπως για να δω τη μέθοδο, όχι για να μάθω τι συνέβαινε, δεν με ενδιαφέρει. Χίλια δυο πράγματα μπορεί να συμβαίνουν σε εμάς τους ανθρώπους. Αλλά τη μέθοδο, δηλαδή την πανσοφία του Θεού. Εν πάση περιπτώσει υπέκυψα, λέω: «Πες». Αυτή ήταν χήρα. Είχε αδελφούς παντρεμένους. Είχαν μια αυλή που γύρω γύρω είχαν δωμάτια. Μέναν αυτοί και είχαν και νοικιάσει. Είχαν νοικιάσει και σ’ έναν σοφέρ. Με τον σοφέρ αυτόν κοιμότανε αυτή, η κυρία με τον σοφέρ. Όταν ήρθαν τα πράγματα όμως και άκουσε πώς έχουν τα θέματα, έρχεται στον εαυτό του ο άνθρωπος. Αλλά πώς να του ξεφύγει;
