Summary

The lecture revisits the Akathist narrative from the Annunciation and Nativity through the Presentation of Christ and Simeon’s reception of the Messiah. Christ is presented as the guide of those who wander and the redeemer of spiritual captives, whose willing service to him is true freedom from slavery to sin and the devil. Christ’s Incarnation is described as divine condescension rather than spatial departure: the uncircumscribed Word remained divine while becoming man to raise humanity toward heaven and reopen Paradise.

This evening, as you know, we are speaking about the Akathist Hymn, and we shall continue. As we said, with the help of the Lord and the grace of our Most Holy Theotokos, we want to say a little more about it. It is not good simply to hold a summary in our hands without understanding what we are saying and chanting, or what the hymn seeks to teach us. So, within the limits of our ability, let us broaden the subject a little. Tonight, if I remember correctly, this is our fourth talk, and we are still at the letter nu. The rest of the alphabet, of course, still remains. This is more or less where we have reached.

We have discussed how the conception took place, how our Most Holy Theotokos reacted, how the angel answered her, how she finally accepted, how she departed and went into the hill country, and how she returned from there. We also discussed how Joseph dealt with the matter when he found her pregnant and then, through God’s intervention, took her into his care, as you know. Then the hymn spoke to us about the shepherds, the birth in Bethlehem, those who visited Bethlehem, the Magi, and the other events. Afterward, it spoke about the Presentation of Jesus and Simeon the God-receiver: how he too received God’s Holy One into his arms and uttered those beautiful words, “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word.”

That part came to a close, as you will remember. We now reconnect the final words of last Monday’s talk with what happened in this instance: what took place, what Christ came here to accomplish, and how we ought to understand it. It was something supernatural, and He came to accomplish something supernatural, not something merely natural. At the letter nu, the hymn says the following:

“The Creator revealed a new creation, appearing to us who were made by Him.” In other words, a new way, a new manner, was followed and employed in this conception: “Having sprung from a womb that knew no seed.”

And He preserved “her as she was, incorrupt.” He was born without seed from a womb in which no seed had been sown, and at the same time, by His birth, He left her incorrupt. “So that, beholding the wonder, we may praise her, crying aloud.” We behold the miracle, and we raise our hands and greet her, proclaiming why this wondrous event took place. In the first six salutations of this stanza, the hymn greets her first in this way: “Rejoice, flower of incorruption.” Truly, she is a flower. “Rejoice, crown of self-restraint.” Our Most Holy Theotokos is indeed the diadem of self-restraint.

Those who live in virginity, who exercise self-restraint and chastity, always have the Theotokos as their helper. She is their honor and their leader. “Rejoice, you who shine forth the type of the Resurrection.” Here it says, “Rejoice”—you who give us, as we might say, a living image of how we shall be saved through the Resurrection. For just as she remained incorrupt, so we too shall rise incorruptible in the Resurrection. She is a type, a foreshadowing, of the Resurrection. “Rejoice, you who reveal the life of the angels.” Truly, our Most Holy Theotokos left the pattern of an angelic life in this world.

She commends the angelic life to those who are able to embrace it. It is the greatest virtue and receives the greatest crown: self-restraint and virginity. “Rejoice, tree of glorious fruit, from which the faithful are nourished.” She is a tree bearing fruit by which the faithful are fed. Christ is the fruit of that tree, and the faithful are nourished by Him. All the food found in the world is for the human body. But this fruit, which comes from the tree that is our Most Holy Theotokos, is food for the human soul. The hymn speaks of this elsewhere as well; we shall come across it and discuss it there. “Rejoice, tree of abundant shade, beneath which many find shelter.”

It portrays her like an umbrella, like a tree casting deep shade, beneath which many find shelter. Our Church has the feast of the Holy Protection and celebrates it. I do not know whether you are familiar with its story. There is a feast in our Church that would normally be celebrated on October 1. In Greece, however, we moved it to October 28 after the war of 1940, because our Most Holy Theotokos protected our nation. That is precisely why the feast was transferred from October 1. So here too, she is presented as a leafy tree that offers shelter and covers the people. Do you know how this feast was established?

The Holy Protection is the protecting veil of our Most Holy Theotokos. You should read the life of the Fool-for-Christ. There you will learn that Andrew the Fool-for-Christ had a disciple named Epiphanius, who later became a great man. Once, during an all-night vigil at Blachernae in Constantinople, Andrew the Fool-for-Christ was present. To the world he appeared outwardly insane, but he was a saintly man. Epiphanius, who was still young at the time, knew that Andrew was a man of God. This had been revealed to the young disciple, and the two of them spoke about it. So, during that all-night vigil at Blachernae in Constantinople, Saint Andrew the Fool-for-Christ was there.

He drew the young Epiphanius aside and showed him our Most Holy Theotokos in the heavens, spreading her protection over the city. This event gave rise to the feast of the Holy Protection. As I mentioned earlier, we transferred the feast because of another event: she also protected us in 1940, and so we moved it to October 28. Here, then, the hymn calls her a “tree of abundant shade, beneath which many find shelter.” Truly, beneath the grace of our Most Holy Theotokos and beneath Him who was born of her, a person is sheltered and safe. Neither the sun, nor the rain, nor lightning can harm him. But the question is this: are we beneath the wings of our Most Holy Theotokos and Christ? Are we? Most of us are not.

Let us ask ourselves: are we receiving any benefit? “Rejoice, you who bear the Guide of those who wander.” Every person in this world wanders in pitiable delusion—regardless of knowledge, wealth, or power—if he does not have Christ as his Guide. Pitiably lost is the one who does not have Christ as his Guide. Christ is the Guide who gives meaning to a person’s life and illumination to understand why he came into this world, where he is going, and what his destination is. Unless a person has resolved this matter within himself, he lives in vain. “Rejoice,” then, says the hymn, “you who bear in your womb the Guide of those who wander. Rejoice, you who give birth to...”

“...the Redeemer of captives.” Man was a captive, and people are captives even today. If they are not enslaved to the Turk, they are enslaved to the devil. Captivity of the soul is worse than captivity of the body. I was speaking with a student as I traveled in a car, when another young woman, apparently also a student, suddenly interrupted us and said, “I detest Christianity and the Gospel.” No one had asked her. “Because Christ creates slaves.” I said, “How did you arrive at that?” She replied, “Have you not seen where Paul says, ‘a servant of Jesus Christ’?” “Who? Paul?”

“I am astonished,” she said. “I would have had a great deal to say to Paul if I had known him—going and making himself a slave like that. Man is free,” she said. I asked, “Who made man free?” “He simply is free,” she answered. Really? Man is not free at all unless Christ sets him free. Otherwise, man is a slave. “But if Christ came to free them, why does He want servants?” she retorted. “The servants of Christ are different from the slaves of Satan,” I said. “There is a difference between being a servant of Christ and being a slave of Satan.” I then gave her the following example, and I would like you to know it too. If I remember correctly, we discussed this subject here once before. But it fits the present passage, because Christ came to set the captives free. The story goes as follows:

In the days of the slave trade, a master went to the marketplace to buy slaves. People bought slaves to do their work and exploited them, so that they could recover what they had paid and then profit from their labor. So this man went to the market and bought several slaves. Among them was a very strong man, a giant of a man, powerfully built, for whom he paid a very high price. In fact, the seller demanded an astronomical sum. The new buyer did not haggle or say, “You are asking too much,” or, “Will you not take less?” He paid without a word.

Then he set them to one side, much as we set aside the lambs we buy at the market on Great Thursday.

He told them, “Wait here. I have more shopping to do, and then we shall leave the town and go out to the farm.” When he returned, the slaves were joking and laughing among themselves. It made little difference to them; they had merely changed masters. They were slaves either way. But that strong, powerfully built man was downcast. He looked as though something troubled him, as though he were suffering. His new master asked, “What is wrong with you? Why do you not speak? Why do you not laugh?” and so forth. The man said nothing. Eventually, the master became concerned. “Perhaps you are ill,” he said. “Is something wrong? We are going out to the farm now, but when we return from the countryside, if you are still in pain or something is wrong, we shall take you to a doctor and have you examined.” Yet the man remained this way for an entire month. At last, the master pressed him until he answered.

The man said, “How do you expect me to be cheerful and laugh as the others do?” His master replied, “Why should you not be cheerful?” The man asked, “How much did you pay for me?” “Is that why you are like this?” the master said. “And what concern is that of yours?” The slave answered, “You bought me for such a high price. I can only imagine what I shall have to endure so that you may recover what you paid for me and make a profit, because you did not buy me out of compassion. You bought me to exploit me.” The master said, “Is that why you are suffering? Is that what torments you?” “Yes, that is why.” “I did not pay for you in order to keep you as a slave,” the master told him. “Then why did you pay for me?” “So that you could be free. Go with God’s blessing. I paid your former master the high price he asked so that I could set you free. Go—you are free.” The man was stunned. Then he fell at his feet and said, “I shall always be your servant.” This is Christ, who came to free man from cruel masters, from Satan. Yet man, out of gratitude and love, falls willingly at His feet again. I mentioned this to you in connection with another stanza.

You remember this subject. That is what we have here. They are free servants, but this cannot be understood by people who feel condemned by the Gospel of Christ, because the Gospel does not approve of their lawless and immoral way of life. It does not permit fornication, adultery, theft, or deceit. This is precisely why they do not want Christ. They find fault with Him, claiming that He came into the world to make slaves and denying that He came to set man free. In any case, the next salutation says, “Rejoice, supplication before the righteous Judge.” Our Christ is the righteous Judge. The one person who can entreat Him, move Him, so to speak, and incline Him to mercy is the Most Holy Theotokos. This is why our Church, which alone possesses the Spirit of God...

...always includes the Most Holy Virgin whenever she raises a prayer to heaven. Immediately we hear, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos.” The Church places her there, at His right hand and beside Him, always pleading with Him. Pay attention to the prayers offered by the clergy. After five or ten words, they include a petition to our Most Holy Theotokos. She is always indispensable. She is a great source of help in human hands, yet most of us do not call upon her as we should. We even blaspheme her. “Rejoice, supplication before the righteous Judge”—that is, you who entreat the righteous Judge. “Rejoice, forgiveness for the transgressions of many”—that is, you through whose supplications forgiveness is granted for the offenses of...

When a person places our Most Holy Theotokos before him as an advocate, as we say, she will arrange the matter and help him concerning his sins. Do you remember Saint Mary of Egypt the other day? When she went to venerate the precious Cross, defiled as she was and accompanied by her companions, she could not enter. Each time she tried, she was unable to enter the Church. She saw an icon of our Most Holy Theotokos inside and said to her, “Please help me to enter, and when I come out, I shall change my life.” And indeed, our Most Holy Theotokos intervened, and Mary entered. She fell at the feet of Christ, asked forgiveness, and said, “Illumine me and show me what I must do.” Then the Lady, our Most Holy Theotokos, took charge and said, “Cross the Jordan, and there you will find the way prepared for you.” The Theotokos takes charge; she comes forward as an advocate concerning a person’s sins. Our Lord receives her plea, because, as our Holy Fathers say, “A mother’s supplication has great power to win the Master’s favor.”

Continuing, the hymn greets her in this way: “Rejoice, garment of boldness for the naked.” Who are the naked? All those who are descendants of Adam and have not yet received Christ. All the people of the Old Testament, until Christ came, were naked, even though they were clothed. They were clothed in flesh, but spiritually naked. They are descendants of Adam. Adam went out naked and exposed. That is why God made garments of animal skins and clothed him. If you read the troparia for the Sunday of Cheesefare,

which commemorates the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, you will see Adam himself say: “Wretched as I am, I have been stripped of the garment woven by God.” Though he was naked, he had been clothed; but when he sinned, his nakedness appeared. That mantle, so to speak, fell from him. He lost the grace of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, all Adam’s descendants need to be clothed. Hence the words: “As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” This is also symbolized by the white garment that the priest blesses and places upon the newly illumined: the person has been clothed in Christ. It is also what the Lord says, as we have mentioned before, if I remember correctly, in the parable of the wedding feast in Matthew, chapter 22:

a man was found there without a wedding garment. The soul must be clothed. We say this repeatedly, especially during Holy Week: “I behold Your bridal chamber adorned, O my Savior, but I have no wedding garment that I may enter. Make radiant the garment of my soul.” That is what this means. And when the king said to that man, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?” he was speechless. They seized him and cast him into the place where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. This garment mentioned here, in connection with mankind’s nakedness, is also represented by the burial shroud we wear. They place over us, front and back, something like a long robe. Some have even had it dipped in the Jordan, thinking that this guarantees their entrance into Paradise, as though Paradise had a special plot reserved for pilgrims to the Holy Land. But its true meaning is that we have not remained naked: we have been clothed in Christ.

We have been clothed in Christ, and so we are clothed. Of course, we have that cloth and wear it front and back, though in reality most of us are not worthy to have it placed upon us. A person who has not received Christ has remained naked, deprived of grace. Here the hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos as the “garment of boldness for the naked.” To approach with boldness, you must appear wearing the garment of Christ. That is why we receive the blood of Christ in Holy Communion, and it cleanses us from every sin. That is also why the Prodigal Son was first given the best robe, and only then entered. All these things speak of the soul’s garment. Man, as a descendant of Adam, is naked and has no boldness before God. Therefore, when he goes up, he must go behind the Cross of Christ, dressed in Christ’s garment and bearing Christ’s blood. Our own righteousness amounts to nothing; it cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Through Christ, however, it can enter, when God the Father sees that

we bear the marks, the likeness, and the garments of Christ. Then, as Christ’s younger brethren, we too shall be granted entry into Paradise. “Rejoice, tender love that surpasses every longing.” Then she is greeted once more: “Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.” The hymn then moves on to the letter xi and gives us a rule for how we ought to live in response to all these things: the seedless conception, the virginity, and this supernatural birth.

And so forth. It gives us this watchword: “Having beheld a strange birth.” We have seen something wondrous, a wondrous birth. “Let us become strangers to the world.” Let us not cling to this world. Let us become strangers to it and distance ourselves from its ways. Someone may ask, “Where are we supposed to go—to the mountains?” That is not what it means. You will live in the world, but you will not live according to the world. You will be among the sexually immoral, says Paul, but you will not be immoral. You will be among thieves, but you will not steal. You will be among liars, but you will not lie. You will be among the dishonorable, but you will not be dishonorable. You will be among adulterers, but you will not be an adulterer, whether man or woman. “Let us become strangers to the world.” “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” Of course, some people say, “But is that possible? Living here amid all this filth, how can you possibly escape it? How can you…”

be saved? You cannot become holy.” Yet you can become holy while living here. The claim that you cannot is false. Let such people ask the fish, and the fish will answer them. What question should they ask? Say to a fish, “How many years have you lived here in the sea?” The sea bream will answer, “Fifteen years.” “Then why are you not salty, after spending fifteen years in salt water?” “I am not salty. The Creator, the King of us all and your King too, made me this way, so that you might learn that you can live in salt water without becoming salty.” You can live amid filth without becoming foul. These things are possible, but we make no spiritual struggle. How does a doctor or nurse care for someone with typhus or some other contagious disease? They are vaccinated, and then they care for the sick person

without being infected. In our case, what vaccines will protect you against the evil and corruption of the world? What is the vaccine? Christ. You are with Christ. You are with His Church. You receive Holy Communion. You go to Holy Confession. Then see whether anything can infect you. Nothing can. But since we make no spiritual struggle at all, how could we remain unharmed? This is precisely why the hymn says: “Having beheld a strange birth, let us become strangers to the world.” Distance yourself from the world; do not do what the world does. “Let us turn our nous toward heaven.” Man is the only creature made to look upward. All the other creatures are made to look downward, because the earth is their destination. Man is destined to go upward. “Let us turn our nous toward heaven.” What should I look for in heaven? Look toward the One who went before you into heaven. And who is this forerunner who entered heaven?

Christ. Read the final verse of Hebrews, chapter 6, and you will find that Christ has entered heaven as a forerunner on our behalf. There are three forerunners, not only one. John the Forerunner was the forerunner of Christ’s first coming. Elijah is the second forerunner of Christ’s coming, the Second Coming. And Christ is our forerunner, who has gone before us into heaven. For Christ to come into the world, He had John as His forerunner. For man to go into heaven, he has Christ as his forerunner. “Let us turn our nous toward heaven.” What is there? What awaits us there? What is it? “Let us turn our nous toward heaven. For this reason the Most High God appeared on earth as a humble man.” For this reason the Most High God

humbled Himself and appeared on earth as man: to raise man up and bring him into heaven. “Desiring to draw to the heights those who cry aloud to Him: Alleluia.” Glory to God. If only man could understand and live out this descent and ascent. You have seen, the hymn says, so many wondrous things. What should you do now? Tear yourself away from this world. Put the devil aside; put fashion aside; give a little less to the flesh, to the ego, and to self-interest. Leave them behind. Look upward: “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” He who was God came and became man to help you, to draw you upward, so that you might once again become a child of God. How will this happen? Our destination is not here. Here we have no abiding

“city, but we seek the city that is to come.” Become “once more a citizen of Paradise.” That is man’s destination, and that is what he must seek. Now there is a question that is often put to us: since the Most High God was above, how did He come down? How did this happen? It is said somewhere: “What took place was not a change of place, but divine condescension.” What does this mean? When the priests carry the Holy Gifts back into the sanctuary, signifying at that moment Christ’s removal from the Cross and His burial, they cover Him. Among the words of the prayer, the priest says that Christ was in Paradise with the thief, in the tomb with His body, and in Hades with His soul,

while remaining uncircumscribed and filling all things. How could He be both here and there? He is not merely man; He is God. I believe the hymn explains this a little further on, and I will speak about it there. He was wholly here below, yet He had not departed at all from what is above. Being uncircumscribed, He did not leave heaven; He remained there as well.

The hymn speaks of “divine condescension”—that is, the uncircumscribed Word. He is both there and here. What happened, then? Divine condescension. In what sense? “It was not a change of place.” God did not leave heaven, come here, and cease to be there. “And there was birth from a Virgin who had received God.” Do you hear this? What, then, happened? We still confess God upon His throne. God did not leave His throne.

He reached down His hand; He sent Christ below and said, “Take hold, so that I may draw you upward.” Did He leave His place? He remained there and sent the Word below, stretching down His hand. “Holy God, Holy Mighty, through whom all things were made.” He sent Him below so that people might take hold of Christ and be drawn upward. That is why the hymn rightly calls this “divine condescension.” God condescends to man. It was “not a change of place.” He did not leave there to come here and then cease to be there. The Church expresses this beautifully. If someone knows how to interpret the Orthodox Church, even through the arrangement of the church building, he may stand before a candle stand at the Holy Doors and see two candle stands, one by the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos and the other by the icon of Christ.

You will see that each of these candle stands has a single central column, three feet below, a broad platform above, and then three branches at the top. When you see this, it is an image of what I am describing. The three above represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One of the Three came down—the single column—and became man on earth. Yet even while He was on earth, the Three still remained. I do not know whether you grasp this. It is the image expressed here. The hymn then greets her in these words: “Rejoice, the space that contained the uncontainable God.” That is, you who, in quotation marks, contained God within your womb. Have you seen her depicted above the apse as the Platytera, “More Spacious than the Heavens”? She contained the Uncontainable; a human being contained God. Of course, it was not really man who contained God.

Rather, God made Himself small enough to dwell within a human being, out of love for mankind. In any case, the Most Holy Theotokos was counted worthy to become the dwelling of the God of all creation. That is why this vessel possesses such great honor. “Rejoice, gate of the sacred Mystery.” What the Theotokos accomplished together with the Lord is truly a Mystery. See where the Church places the Most Holy Theotokos: at the Holy Doors. The Holy Doors are beautiful because there man meets God, and God gives him a free pass to go through, between the Lord on the left and the Most Holy Theotokos on the right, and enter Paradise. The first couple, Adam and Eve, closed Paradise. But the iconostasis now has the Holy Doors, which Christ opened when He was crucified on Golgotha. If you remember these things and have absorbed and ordered them within yourselves, the first two human beings placed a barrier between themselves and God. That curtain—and, by extension, today’s iconostasis—represents the sin of the first human beings standing between God and mankind. When Christ was crucified and settled mankind’s debt on Golgotha, the first miracle that occurred, as the Evangelists tell us, was that in Solomon’s Temple

the veil was torn from top to bottom. What did this mean? The way had been opened; communion with God was restored. Who opened it? These two persons, through their obedience: Christ and the Theotokos. And who had closed it, so that there were no Holy Doors, no gate, and the high priest entered only once a year? Who had done this? The first couple had placed sin in the way. Now Christ has opened the door and gives us the entry pass: His body and His blood. What power, whether Satan or any demonic toll collector, can stand before a Christian who bears within himself the body and blood of his God? Could Hades hold Christ? Could it possibly have held Him? Then can Hades hold someone who receives Christ in Holy Communion? Hades cannot hold him. That is why Christ says: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. And I will raise him up on the last day.” He possesses entry

through the pass that Christ gives to man at the Holy Doors. Therefore, those who imagine that they can enter the Kingdom of Heaven by some other way will find themselves deceived. The only way, the only path, the only gate is the one that Christ opened together with the Most Holy Theotokos, as she is greeted here: “Rejoice, O gate.” What joy it is for people, I repeat, to meet Christ there on the solea, at the Holy Doors. There is also something here that ought to disappear from our Church, because many priests, unfortunately, do not distribute Christ from the Holy Doors. They bring the antidoron—blessed bread after the Divine Liturgy—to the Holy Doors, while taking Christ out through the north door and distributing Holy Communion from there. But the Holy Doors are Christ’s proper place. Antidoron does not give anyone a pass into Paradise.

“Rejoice, all-holy chariot of Him who sits upon the Cherubim.” In other words: rejoice, all-holy chariot of the One enthroned upon the Cherubim. The Most Holy Theotokos is a chariot, a vehicle bearing Him upon her. Elsewhere in the canon of the Akathist, if you remember, she is called “the light cloud that bears Him who is above all divinity.” The Most Holy Theotokos bears Christ, who transcends all, and here she is greeted as His all-holy chariot. “Rejoice, most excellent dwelling of Him who sits upon the Seraphim.” In other words: rejoice, most perfect dwelling place of the One enthroned upon the Seraphim. What honor and glory belong to the person of the Theotokos! “Rejoice, you who bring opposites into unity.”

“Opposites” means two contrary things. What are they? Virginity and childbirth. How can she be a virgin and yet be pregnant? How can she be pregnant and remain a virgin, give birth and remain a virgin? Yet in her own body she united both. “Rejoice, you who bring opposites into unity. Rejoice, you who join virginity with childbirth.” She united the two. “Rejoice, through whom the transgression was annulled.” This means the first transgression and, by extension, the transgressions of all the descendants of the first transgressor. Sins are absolved only through Christ. If a person is deceived by Satan into believing that his charitable deeds can pay for even one sin, he is greatly deceived. All human sins are forgiven; they are not paid off. They are forgiven. No one will ever be able to say, “I paid the price.”

Can anyone say, “But I have paid so much for this”? No. The blood of Christ cannot be bought. No economist in the world can put a price on the blood of Christ. Our own blood—the blood of fornicators, the corrupt, adulterers, and dishonorable people—is bought for so many drachmas a gram when we donate it to a fellow human being. But the blood of Christ is beyond price. Here, sins are forgiven freely. “Rejoice, through whom transgression was absolved.” Transgression was absolved through Christ, who came and whom she brought into the world. “Rejoice, through whom Paradise was opened.” The first woman closed Paradise, and the second opened it. The first disobeyed; the second obeyed. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.” You tell me I shall give birth without a man? I do not understand it, yet I surrender myself. You are God; do whatever You will. “Where God wills, the order of nature is overcome.” This is humility; this is love.

“Rejoice, key to the Kingdom of Christ.” The Most Holy Theotokos gave birth to the Key, and Christ has placed this key in human hands. It is a double-sided key, as women say, with two faces. One side opens Paradise, and the other opens Hell. Man holds it in his own hands. The side that opens Paradise is called metanoia, repentance; the other is called refusal to repent. Stretch out your hand toward whichever one you choose. Do not demand an explanation from God for sending you to Hell. He did not send you to Hell; you went to Hell. It lies in human hands. If you read the Apocalypse...

you will see that it says He holds the keys of the Abyss. And if you read Matthew and John, you will see that He brought the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to the Apostles. “Take them, Peter,” He says, “the keys of the Kingdom. Whatever you loose will be loosed, and whatever you bind will be bound.” He left them here. Consequently, no one can say, “You know, salvation is difficult.” No—you are ruled by pride. You invent your own religion and do not want to humble yourself, because your reasoning, your education, your knowledge, your conceit, and your position all get in the way. Here she is greeted as the key to the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet behind this key stands the human will. Man has never ceased to possess free will. This freedom...

is given to man so that he may use it for good. For salvation or perdition depends on man. God is not always a savior to someone against his will. If a person wastes away and becomes covered with sores, does that depend on the sun or on the person? On the person: though it is midday, he sleeps with the windows shut and neither wants to go outside nor let the sunlight in. And does a person’s flourishing and renewal depend solely on the sun? No, it depends on the person going out and being renewed in the sunlight. This is Christ. “I have set before you fire and water; stretch out your hand toward whichever you choose.” You are free. “I do not want You, Christ.” Very well; have it your way. Of course, we shall discuss it tomorrow. One day the curtain will fall. Eight hands and eight feet will carry you away, and then we shall discuss it. No matter—do as you please for now.

Drink, blaspheme, do whatever you want. Here, then, she is greeted as a key, but a key placed in human hands, to be used only if man so chooses. In the third chapter of the Apocalypse there is a beautiful image in which Christ says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” Through various circumstances He knocks at the heart of every person—the educated and the uneducated, the prominent and the unknown, the poor and the rich. Christ leaves no heart untouched, no door—no heart—without a knock. But man does not want to open to Christ. “If anyone,” He says, “hears and opens, I will come in to him.” What beauty! “If anyone hears and opens.” But are You not God? Can You not simply enter? No. I gave you this door, and if you wish, you may let Me in. If you do not wish it, I shall remain outside in the wind and rain...

and under the blazing sun. But on that day I too shall leave you outside, since here you left Me outside. For whoever hears and opens, He says, “I will come in to him and dine with him.” And when Christ dines with him here, at the Beautiful Gate as we have said, it is only natural that the man should enter there as well. For he will bear within himself the seeds of the Resurrection, and Hades cannot possibly hold him. He will lodge there “for a little while,” just as Christ did. “For a little while” he lodges there. “O children, bless the Lord.” Yes, he will pay the debt and descend below, but he will rise again, because he bears the seeds of the Resurrection—the Body of our Lord. This is what is taught here. “Rejoice, then, key to the Kingdom of Christ. Rejoice, hope of eternal good things.” Truly, man has consolation. In what else could he place his hope?

Where can a person find consolation? In his father, his mother, or his protector? In whom? If a person has no God and does not set his hope on Him, where can he turn? But if his hope is in God, then a father will be found, a brother will be found, a protector will be found, health will be found—everything will be provided. If a man has everything but does not have God, he is without protection. Therefore, we should never say to our children, “You know, I am the one who cares for you, and when I am gone, then you will appreciate me.” Bind the child to God. Then, if you should depart, God will protect and guide the child, so long as the child has some relationship with Him. And so it should be in every aspect of our lives. In any event: “Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.” This stanza also comes to an end. And now the hymn continues with the letter pi and says: “Every order of angels...”

“was amazed at the great work of Your becoming man.” All the angels, it says—the Cherubim, the Seraphim, Thrones, Dominions, Principalities, Powers, and the rest—were amazed when they saw what God had done. To see God becoming man; to see God burdened with a wooden Cross; to see God struck with fists while they said to Him, “Prophesy! Who struck You?” How can this be? There is, unfortunately, a Roman Catholic image of Christ going up to Golgotha with the Cross and lying fallen, because according to their tradition Christ fell eighty-eight times before Simon of Cyrene relieved Him of the Cross. And among the ten stations the Catholics have on the way up to Golgotha, they depict such a scene.

Jesus is below, made man, wearing a crown of thorns, and above Him stands a row of angels, gazing in awe at what is happening. What is this terrible sight? What is God doing? Why did this happen? How could they comprehend it? How could they comprehend God’s love for man? If only a person had a little spiritual sensitivity and asked God, “My God, will You not give me a pair of glasses so that I too may see what You have done for me?” For we do not know what God has done for us. We do not know. Our soul has not become refined enough to grasp what God has wrought in the midst of the earth. Do we understand, amid suffering, what Christ is to us? We do not. We have never devoted ourselves to prayer and implored Him, “Grant us to understand what You have done.” We thank Him for the cow, for father, for mother, and so forth—for things great and small.

But we do not understand the truly serious matter. At this moment I remember something, and I would like to tell it in honor of a woman who surely is no longer alive. When God was preparing me to return to Christ, He brought me into contact with a nun who gave me my first book—this was about thirty years ago. The fathers and others who read such works will know it: the first volume of Theotokis’s Kyriakodromion. It contains a sound interpretation of Scripture, free from fanciful tales, together with moral teaching in each homily. After interpreting the text verse by verse, he also gives a moral discourse. In God’s providence, this woman gave me that book, the first such book to come into my hands, and I read one part after another.

In any event, one day she said to me, “You know, you must give that book back to me.” I said, “Let me read a little more,” and so forth. Then I began avoiding the woman so that I would not meet her and she would not ask me for the book. I had neither the money to buy another nor any idea whether another book like it even existed. In any event, one morning she was coming down from the Church of the Ascension, where she attended services every day, while I was going up. We met there on Philolaou Street—near Isokratous, if I remember correctly—and I ran straight into her. As we spoke—I did not want her to mention the book—she began talking to me about Christ. The moment she spoke His name, tears began pouring from her eyes as though someone had opened a faucet—not drop by drop.

The tears streamed down her face. I was left speechless. “If only you knew, Dimitri,” she said, “how much Christ loves us, you would want to die this very moment and go to be near Him.” As she said it, her tears poured out. And as for me, even if I were beaten for years, I could not shed a tear. We have no knowledge of what Christ is to us; we do not understand it. This is precisely why all these words come here to impress it upon us. “Every order of angels,” it says—pay attention to the words this holy man chose—“was amazed.” They marveled at “the great work of Your becoming man; for they beheld Him who is unapproachable as God become a man approachable by all.” He whom no one can approach, it says, can now be approached.

What did it say about the shepherds? They went to find the Unattainable One, and they found Him waiting for them. He whom no one can reach was waiting, and they reached Him. These are paradoxes. “They beheld Him,” it says, “as a man approachable by all, dwelling among us and hearing from all: Alleluia.” That is, He kept company with us, and He Himself heard the words, “Glory to God.” The hymn now introduces another thought: what this strange birth brought about among learned men, among those who tried to grasp the Mystery with the nous, the spiritual intellect.

At the letter rho it says: “Eloquent orators.” “We see eloquent orators become as speechless as fish.” Fish, it says. What can orators say? What can scientists say? What can the wise say about what the Holy Spirit—what God Himself—worked within a virgin? “We see eloquent orators,” it says, “become as speechless as fish before you, O Theotokos; for they are at a loss to explain how you remain a virgin and yet were able to give birth.” How did this happen? Science cannot solve these things; for science they remain insoluble. “But we, the faithful, marveling at the Mystery”—it is an ineffable Mystery; we cannot solve it. The very word Mystery means that my mouth is closed.

I cannot explain it, yet I believe it. “But we, marveling faithfully at the Mystery, cry aloud.” And now the hymn greets her with six acclamations of “Rejoice.” “Rejoice, vessel of the Wisdom of God.” Who is the Wisdom of God? Christ. Have you ever read the Wisdom of Solomon? Have you read, in the tenth chapter, the prayer in which Solomon the Wise asked God for Wisdom who sits beside His throne—that is, Christ? There you will see who Wisdom is. Is Socrates Wisdom? Is the Milesian philosopher Wisdom? Are we the wise ones? Are philosophy and science Wisdom? Christ is the Wisdom of God.

There is a church in Constantinople called Hagia Sophia—Holy Wisdom. It is not dedicated to some woman named Saint Sophia. It is the church of the Wisdom of God, of Christ. The same is true in Thessaloniki: it is dedicated to God’s Wisdom, to Christ—not to a woman named Saint Sophia. Saint Sophia, whose children were Faith, Hope, and Love, is another matter entirely. Here the hymn addresses the Most Holy Theotokos: “Rejoice, vessel of the Wisdom of God; rejoice, treasury of His providence.” God provided for our salvation through this great divine dispensation. In any event, we shall stop here for tonight and, God willing, continue later. I would like to use the five minutes that remain to say a few words about Pascha, since we shall have a short break in the coming days. Next week is Holy Week, with the services of the Church—the Bridegroom services, Great Friday, and so forth. We will not have our talk here, nor on Bright Monday; but God willing, we shall celebrate on the Monday after Thomas Sunday. So I would like to say a few words to you about this Pascha.

The Church tells us that Christ said: “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem.” The Son of Man will suffer this and that; He will be crucified, and so forth. “And on the third day He will rise.” Whenever He speaks of His Passion, He always speaks also of the Resurrection. I say this for those who, unfortunately, prepare for the Resurrection without passing through Pascha. Let them pay attention to this. Let them ask Christ, “Why are You ascending the Cross?” And they will hear: “I ascend because of your sins.” “Then I shall bring You two candles.” I do not want candles; bring Me your sins. “I shall bring You a wreath.” Bring Me your sins. Unfortunately, many bring wreaths without taking Great Friday into account. “I am going to celebrate Pascha.” No, this is not what the Church teaches. The Church first reminds us of the Passion and the reason for the Passion. Only then does it speak of the Resurrection. You will rejoice...

and we shall rejoice together, if you first set matters right with God. Make peace with other people, and make peace with God. “In peace let us pray to the Lord,” says the Church. “For the peace from above, let us pray to the Lord.” That is the second petition. Be reconciled with others and be reconciled with God. Go to the person and say, “Good morning, my dear friend.” He is not likely to tell you to get lost. Come to terms with him and put right your offenses against others, even if it costs you morally or materially. Then be reconciled with God in the way He appointed: through your metanoia, your repentance, and Holy Confession. Only then should you go and celebrate Pascha. To celebrate Pascha and say, “Christ is risen,” a person must understand this: Pascha did not begin when Christ came into the world. Pascha dates to 1450 BC. We have said this before, but for those who have recently joined us, we shall say it again.

It is a Hebrew word meaning exodus, crossing, or passage. It does not mean food, though we have reduced it to feasting and then say that we have celebrated Pascha. Pascha concerns the soul first and the body second. Pascha is connected with Pharaoh’s tenth plague. Pharaoh would not let the Hebrews leave because he wanted them there as workers for economic reasons. At God’s command, therefore, ten plagues came upon him to compel him to release them. The tenth plague was this: On the fourteenth day of Nisan—April fourteenth—you shall take a lamb without blemish, perfect, with no deformity or lameness. You shall keep it for five days. On the fifth day, in the afternoon before sunset, you shall slaughter it, collect its blood in a basin, and sprinkle the blood upon the doorposts of the houses.

That night an angel of the Lord would pass through and slay all the firstborn of the Egyptians. Wherever he found blood, he would not enter. Did the angel not know which houses belonged to the Israelites? That is not what God said. Wherever there is blood, the angel will not enter. And indeed, an angel passed through and slew all the firstborn. The next day all Egypt was in mourning, and the Hebrews had the opportunity to depart. So it was the blood that preserved them; the blood protected them. Concerning the lamb, He told them this: They were not to eat it boiled, but roasted in fire—thus the spit-roasted lamb from that time onward. They were to eat it whole, with its entrails; they were to eat the head and the legs, leaving nothing over. Take a lamb, run the spit through it from here and bring it out through the legs, and set it in place.

Across the back, at the rear, what do we put? Do we not put something crosswise, like a cross, and turn it on the spit? And if you place the lamb’s front legs there as well, what will it look like? It will become an image of Christ crucified. Once you have roasted this lamb, you will place it on two forked supports and pick the meat from it to eat. You will not disturb its body or skeleton; the skeleton will remain intact. For one day, when this Lamb ascends the Cross, His legs will remain unbroken: “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” The legs of the others will be crushed, but He will be clearly distinguished. Whatever remains in the morning you shall burn. It is like what the priests consume. That, then, prefigured the blood of Christ. This, Scripture says, is called Pascha, and it shall remain forever. Pascha does indeed remain forever, because it gives you the opportunity to survive and, at the same time, to cross over

the Red Sea toward the Promised Land. This is the Pascha a person should celebrate—not with the offspring of an earthly sheep, but with the Lamb, Christ. And this is the Pascha I urge you also to celebrate: settle the matter of your sins, receive Holy Communion, and mark the doorposts of your life with the blood of Jesus Christ. One final point. There is a verse from a doxastikon of the Church which says: “Let us forgive all things for the sake of the Resurrection, and so let us cry aloud: Christ is risen.” Have you not forgiven? Then “Christ is risen” is not for you. You may even hold your Paschal candle upside down—do whatever you like. “Let us forgive all things for the sake of the Resurrection, and so let us cry aloud: Christ is risen.” If we have not forgiven, then Christ’s Resurrection has no place in us. Secondly, in 1050 BC, David

foresees the anti-Christian Christians, the enemies of Christ, and says: “Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from before His face.” What do we see on the night of the Resurrection? Thousands of people. And what do we see after “Christ is risen”? They fly away like birds, hurrying off to eat the Paschal soup. A man takes the Holy Light and his candle and carefully keeps it from going out along the way. When he reaches his door, before entering, he makes a cross on it with the soot, so that the devil will not enter his house. But the devil is already inside him, and he has brought him home from the Church while making that cross. How does that other verse go? “As wax melts before the fire.” How does it say it there? “As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish.”

“As wax melts before the fire.” People flee when they see Christ rising from the dead. Francis does not see it either; he does not. Do you understand? You must take notice of these things. At four o’clock, it is “He is risen,” and then, see you next year. Let us go.

Παρουσιάζει σαν μια ομπρέλα, σαν ένα δέντρο με παχύ ίσκιο. Κάτω εκεί σκεπάζονται πολλοί. Η Εκκλησία μας έχει την Αγία Σκέπη και την εορτάζει. Δεν ξέρω αν ξέρετε την περίπτωση αυτή. Υπάρχει μια εορτή στην Εκκλησία μας η οποία κανονικά πρέπει να εορτάζεται την 1η Οκτωβρίου. Εμείς την έχουμε μεταθέσει στις 28 Οκτωβρίου, τελευταίως, μετά τον πόλεμο του ’40, διότι η Παναγία μας εσκέπασε το έθνος μας. Και γι’ αυτό ακριβώς μετέφεραν από την 1η Οκτωβρίου. Έτσι και εδώ την παρουσιάζει σαν ένα ευσκιόφυλλο που έχει σκέπη και σκεπάζει τους ανθρώπους. Ξέρετε η εορτή αυτή από πού έχει θεσπιστεί;

δεν κινδυνεύει. Στην προκειμένη ποια είναι τα εμβόλια που θα κάνεις έναντι της κακίας του κόσμου και της διαφθοράς του κόσμου; Ποιο είναι το εμβόλιο; Χριστός. Εσύ είσαι με τον Χριστό. Εσύ είσαι με την Εκκλησία Του. Εσύ είσαι με τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Εσύ είσαι με την Εξομολόγηση. Να δεις, σε πιάνει τίποτα; Δεν σε πιάνει τίποτα. Αλλά εφόσον δεν κάνουμε κανέναν αγώνα, πώς είναι δυνατόν; Γι' αυτό ακριβώς: «Ξένον», λοιπόν, λέει, «τόκον ιδόντες, ξενωθώμεν του κόσμου». Απομακρύνσου από τον κόσμο, μην κάνεις ό,τι κάνει ο κόσμος. «Τὸν νοῦν εἰς οὐρανὸν μεταθέντες». Είναι το μόνο ζώο ο άνθρωπος, ο οποίος είναι φτιαγμένος να βλέπει επάνω. Όλα τα άλλα είναι φτιαγμένα να βλέπουν κάτω, γιατί προορίζονται για κάτω. Ο άνθρωπος θα πάει επάνω. «Μεταθέντες». Τι να κοιτάω στον ουρανό; Θα κοιτάζεις εκείνον ο οποίος πήγε πρόδρομος για σένα στον ουρανό. Καλά, ποιος είναι ο πρόδρομος που πήγε στον ουρανό;

λιοπύρι. Αλλά θα σε κλείσω και σένα εκείνη την ημέρα έξω, εφόσον εσύ θα με κλείσεις από εδώ έξω. Διότι όποιος, λέει, ακούσει και ανοίξει, «εἰσελεύσομαι εἰς αὐτόν καὶ συνδειπνήσω μετ' αὐτοῦ». Και όταν συνδειπνήσει από εδώ μαζί, εκεί στην Ωραία Πύλη που λέμε, φυσικό είναι να εισέλθει εκεί πέρα. Γιατί θα φέρνει μέσα τα σπέρματα της Αναστάσεως ο άνθρωπος και δεν είναι δυνατόν να κρατηθεί υπό του Άδου. «Εἰς μικρὸν» θα ξενοδοχηθεί, όπως ο Χριστός μας. «Εἰς μικρόν», ξενοδοχείται. «Παῖδες, εὐλογεῖτε». Ναι, θα πληρώσει το γραμμάτιο, θα πάει κάτω, αλλά θα βγει επάνω όμως, διότι θα φέρει τα σπέρματα της Αναστάσεως, σώμα του Κυρίου μας. Αυτό διδάσκει εδώ πέρα. «Χαῖρε», λοιπόν, «ἡ κλεὶς τῆς Χριστοῦ Βασιλείας. Χαῖρε, ἐλπὶς ἀγαθῶν αἰωνίων». Πράγματι, ο άνθρωπος έχει παρηγοριά. Επί τι να λέει;
