Summary
The lecture begins with the shepherds finding Christ with the Theotokos and recognizing Him as the Lamb and Shepherd who restores humanity to God. Their gifts confess Christ’s identity and mission: gold honors His kingship, frankincense His divinity, and myrrh foretells His sacrificial death and burial. Christ’s lordship is liberating rather than oppressive: He purchases humanity’s freedom through self-sacrificing love and grants believers power against sin, passions, and spiritual bondage.

Our time is limited, so I have tried to continue with the same subject. We are trying to understand more deeply what Jesus said earlier and what we set before ourselves for consideration. Two years have passed, and I think that only lately have we begun to see certain things which, although we had read them for years and many of us may even have explained them, we did not really know what they meant. This is what we mean here. We will not abandon the subject. We have not understood these words in their true depth, with all the meaning given to them through the Holy Spirit; but we are beginning to understand something, together with the reverent awareness that we truly had not
understood as much as we should have. God will count even this to our credit. According to my notes, we had reached the point where the shepherds went down to see whether what the Angel had told them was true. We heard that they went in haste at his word and found Him as the Lamb, held in the embrace of the Most Holy Theotokos. This is the wondrous thing He did for mankind: He was to become the Lamb in order to save His own lamb and bring it back again into the fold. There, I greeted our Most Holy Theotokos as the Mother of the Lamb and the Shepherd, and we reached the final “Rejoice.”
Our Lord revealed Himself to the shepherds. This did not happen by chance, and He revealed Himself to people whose education may well have amounted to nothing. Yet no one should conclude from this that Christ concerns Himself only with people who cannot read, with the uneducated. He concerns Himself with them as well.
Our Christ does not dwell merely in people’s intellects, but in their hearts. Hearts, Glory to God, have blood in them. That is why in the Old Testament He asked mankind, saying, “My son, give Me your heart.” Your wallet? Keep your wallet here, and then you wake up! “Give Me your heart, so that I may come and dwell there.” That is the room I desire, the room called the heart. Give Me your heart. The text then mentions something else. It recounts what happened to the Magi, for He revealed Himself to them in a strange way: through a star with a long history—an exceedingly long history, if only someone is willing to seek out its background. The star that appeared...
in the East was seen by these distinguished and educated men—men with, as we might say, at least four degrees: astrologers, philosophers, physicians, and so forth. That is what the word “Magi” means here. For a Greek today, a magus may mean one of those people living in tents outside Menidi, whom others insult as gypsies. But the learning of the Magi was regarded as a science. They were men of universal learning. And so He revealed Himself to them as well, out in Persia among the descendants of the Chaldeans. They came, sought Him, found Him, and worshipped Him as God. Here, then, in the letter theta, the hymn gives an introduction: “The Magi, beholding the God-directed star, followed its radiance.”
“The God-directed star.” The Magi—the astrologers—beheld it and saw it. It was a strange star, from which they concluded that the King had been born in Judea. If you wish to learn its earlier history, go to chapter 24 of Numbers in the Old Testament, and there you will find mention of this star. A man named Balaam had prophesied that when the star appeared—“A star shall rise out of Jacob”—He would be born. And Balaam’s descendants awaited the fulfilment of his prophecy.
They immediately understood that the prophecy was being fulfilled, and these distinguished men set out. They left their chairs of learning, their homes, their wives, and their work, and departed in search of the tribe of Judah, from which they expected Him to be born. That is precisely why, when they reached Judea—the land of the tribe of Judah—they asked the king, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” For them, His birth was a certainty: “Do not doubt it. We have interpreted a sign known to our science.” Yet the sign itself was from God; it was not their own. You know the events related by the Evangelist Matthew. Unless one connects them all, one cannot understand the subject, and the talk will become unclear. So I will take the opportunity to remind you of them.
In essence, the star informed them in the East that He had been born, and then they lost sight of it. For if it had guided them all the way from the East to Bethlehem, they would have had no reason to go to Herod and the others and ask where the King had been born. Secondly, we are told that they received the answer from the Scriptures, because Herod questioned the scribes and Pharisees, asking what the Scriptures said about this King of whom the Magi spoke. That is the setting of this passage. “The God-directed star”—the star that led them toward God. “The Magi, beholding it”—the Magi saw it. “They followed its radiance”—see how it guided them and how they journeyed toward that place, and...
there it led them. They went to find a king, some great personage, and they reached the Unapproachable One. He is indeed unapproachable, yet He awaited them in Bethlehem, and so they reached the One who cannot be reached. They came and worshipped the Child. God awaited them there, born as man. One need only turn to the other Evangelist to see what happened. Notice that Herod, in his pride, did not go with them. Instead, he took utterly shameful measures to ensure that the Child would be killed. He even slaughtered his own son. This is why that famous saying arose...
“It is better to be Herod’s pig than his son.” If you were Herod’s pig, he might not slaughter you; but if you were his son, he would. He slaughtered his own child, fearing that the boy might succeed him and take his throne. “Go,” he said, “and search diligently. If you find Him, return and tell me, so that I too may go and worship Him.” But before you leave, tell me something: when did you see the star? When did it appear? He conceived this evil thought and carefully noted the date on which the star had appeared. That is why his later command concerned all children two years old and under, according to the time he had ascertained from the Magi.
Human reasoning cannot interpret these things. What did they say? “Thank you; we shall return.” They came and found Him in the house. Joseph was also there, and God intervened, telling them, “Return by another road to your own country, and leave Herod behind.” Herod—do you understand? That was the essential course of events for those men. What did they find? They found Christ in the embrace of our Most Holy Theotokos. For in the letter iota it says, “The children of the Chaldeans beheld”—the descendants of the Chaldeans, the Magi, beheld. What did they behold? “In the hands of the Virgin, Him who with His hand fashioned mankind.” In the Virgin’s hands they saw the One who had fashioned mankind with His own hand.
Never mind that we take pride in claiming an ape as our father. Most people defend that view, yet the truth remains what it is. David speaks of God’s hands; the Psalms tell us, “Your hands have made me and fashioned me.” We acknowledge God as our Creator and Fashioner. The hymn speaks of those who saw the Creator of creation as an infant, yet understood Him to be the Master. David anticipated us, no matter how clever we think ourselves, and declared that God fashioned man. And to reveal His identity, God arranged for a man blind from birth to come before Him. Christ met him and, with a little spittle and earth, fashioned an eye. In effect, He showed them: “Gentlemen, you were not there when I fashioned the first man. Now I am showing you who I am. By forming this eye, I reveal My identity.” And then they asked, “Who sinned, that this man was born blind? Was it he or his parents?” The Lord answered, “Neither this man sinned, nor his parents,” but there was something else involved: “that the works of God might be revealed in him.” “I am showing you My identity.” This is one such instance. And so the Magi, these learned men, came and found “in the hands of the Virgin, Him who with His hand fashioned mankind; and understanding Him to be the Master...” Consider: what down-to-earth man or woman among us would consent to regard a little child as king,
as God, as the sacrifice and the One who offers the sacrifice? What more can one say? “And understanding Him to be the Master.” Consider how young our Lord was when the Magi came; this can be gathered from the context. Though He had become man and assumed the form of a servant, they recognized Him with their spiritual eyes. For mankind has two pairs of eyes: outward eyes and inward eyes. The outward eyes often fail to see straight, and so do the inward eyes. That is why I am sometimes tempted to say that it would be better not to have the outward eyes if we do not possess the inward ones; for often we lack those as well. Then we are blind twice over. Yet the Magi perceived Him to be the Master.
“They hastened to serve Him with gifts”—they hastened to respond by offering gifts. They could do nothing more than present Him with certain gifts. Then they addressed their “Rejoice” to the Blessed One, the Most Holy Theotokos. I do not know whether you have read what they offered Christ: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The gold was offered to Him as King, the frankincense as God, and the myrrh because this God would be sacrificed; myrrh is an ointment used for burial. They confessed Him as King and as God—not as an ordinary human king, but as the God-Man, the King,
who would be sacrificed. The gift was itself a prophecy that He would be sacrificed. And indeed He was sacrificed out of love for mankind, as you know. Joseph and Nicodemus placed this myrrh in His tomb on the day of His burial. These objects, known as the Precious Gifts, survive to this day. They are at the Monastery of Saint Paul on the Holy Mountain. They look like a woman’s necklace: some six or seven pieces, fastened together in the middle. Other portions have been kept elsewhere, so that if thieves or pirates tried to steal them, they would not take everything and some would remain safely separated. And the ladies who have gone to the Holy Mountain and visited the Monastery of Saint Paul will surely have venerated them.
It is deeply moving to see them. I did not intend to tell you my own cherished experience, but I will, for the love of the faithful and for the Lord’s wonder. When I first went to the Holy Mountain, I knew from books that the Gifts existed, but I did not know where they were kept. When I arrived there, through divine providence, I happened to meet someone I knew. He brought them out and said to me, “Mr Panagopoulos, what are these? These,” he told me, “are the Precious Gifts.” Something happened within me; I felt a great shock in my soul. You simply marvel there, because in such wonder you do not know what to say. Of all the things that move you most deeply when you see them for the first time, this is something truly extraordinary.
With awe I venerated them, and afterward we went up to the archontariki. The archontariki is the common reception room where guests are welcomed. There they rest and relax; there they receive Turkish delight, raki, and a small cup of Athonite coffee. Then they wait to be told which room they will go to, where they will stay and rest, and when they should return for their meal or go to the common refectory. I too went there, sat down, and waited to be told where I should go. Then the former superior, the man who had shown us around and brought me in, came up from below. “Yes, Mr Panagopoulos,” he said, “I want to tell you something, and I also want to give you something.”
He held out a tiny black fragment, like a little piece of wood. “When you venerated the Holy Gifts and walked away,” he told me, “a tiny piece broke off before my eyes. These Gifts become hard, you see, sir. A small piece broke away, and I seemed to hear a voice within me saying that it belonged to you and that I must bring it to you. Here it is; take it.” I was speechless. I made the sign of the Cross, made a prostration, and took it. I keep it inside a wooden cross, together with the other blessed objects I carry with me. These Gifts, then, truly exist. We may be speaking about material objects,
but our Church tells us that our faith is true—it is true. Do not doubt it in the least. Your reason cannot follow everything. It is true, but it all lies beyond reason. Even as we speak now, do we know how I am speaking to you or how you understand me? Reason cannot explain everything we wish it to explain. It has not explained these things. Some educated people say, “What a wretched lot we are: our learning prevents us from believing.” Others use their lack of education as an excuse: “I cannot read; do not ask anything of me.” And then there is the person who is educated.
“I am an educated man. You are speaking to a scientist, and so forth. I cannot believe these things.” His learning does not allow him to believe. Yet how did those men with their four degrees worship this little Child as God? They worshipped Him as King, as the sacrifice and the One who offers the sacrifice. They truly worshipped Him. This is faith. In this instance they did not use their outward eyes. They used their spiritual eyes, the eyes of the soul, which told them, “This is how things truly are.” That is why they brought the corresponding gifts. And I would like to add this: they came prepared, because simple reason itself tells us to prepare. When you visit someone and the child is a little girl, you choose the ribbon accordingly.
If it is a boy, the ribbon should be of the appropriate kind. Is that not what people say? What do you give to girls, and what do you give to boys? Something fitting for each. If you are taking a gift to a father, what will you bring him? If you go to someone who is about to be consecrated a bishop, and the next day he will hold high office, you bring a gift suited to the position he will occupy. So the Magi already believed beforehand that this Child was all these things, and they brought the corresponding gifts. Do you understand? They had not even met Him yet. While they were still journeying, knowing that one day they would meet Him, they had already brought the appropriate gifts—and indeed, at that very moment, they offered them. The hymnographer and iconographer had all this in mind, along with what the God-bearing witnesses handed down and recorded.
This is what you see in what follows. When a person brings all these texts together, he can understand quite clearly how the events unfolded. The hymn then offers another salutation, expressing what the Magi surely said: “Rejoice, Mother of the Star that never sets.” This Star who has come is Christ, and He will never set. Notice that the light, too, is the unsetting Light. At Pascha, all the lights in the Church are extinguished, but behind the Holy Altar the ever-burning lamp remains, symbolizing Christ. Then the priest cries out, “Come, receive the light from the unsetting Light”—come and receive light from the Light that never sets.
Here, allow me a brief digression for those who light lamps before the Theotokos on feast days. The oil lamp should always be burning, for it represents Christ. Its parts should be made of olive wood if possible—the stem, the doors, the openings—so that it may continually remind us of God’s mercy. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, oil is presented as mercy. The lamps should always remain lit, because they portray Christ. Christ is not One who is extinguished and then lit again. He is the Star that never sets, as the hymn says, and all these things in our churches remind us of this.
So she is the Mother of a Star that will never be extinguished. “Rejoice, dawn of the mystical day.” The mystical day is the eternal Kingdom, a day that has no end and will never fade. It is, of course, a mystery—something still veiled, as we have said. “Rejoice, you who extinguished the furnace of deception.” That furnace is idolatry. Christ came and put it out. “Rejoice, you who enlighten the initiates of the Holy Trinity.” You enlighten those who belong to the Holy Trinity, enabling them to believe and understand what we have said about the Holy Trinity: that God is Triune and is not merely one person.
“Rejoice, you who cast the inhuman tyrant from his dominion.” Who formerly held dominion? Who ruled? It was an inhuman tyrant, one who seized the human soul, dragged it down into Hades, and held it captive there with him. For you know that in the Old Testament, whether you were good or evil, you went down to Hades. Paradise and Hell had not yet been opened: Abraham was there, greatly beloved Daniel was there, and all the righteous were there. Both righteous and unrighteous descended to Hades. This ruler was inhuman; he was no ordinary ruler, but a true tyrant—Satan. And through the Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos drives him out and removes him from our midst.
“Rejoice, you who revealed Christ as the Lord who loves mankind,” in place of that tyrant. Yet the Lord who loves mankind does not force Himself upon anyone; He leaves each person free. Many people do not want Christ and prefer to remain with the devil. Consider the Israelites. God sent Moses to bring them out of captivity and slavery. He led them forth and gave them manna each day, food from heaven. Yet those ungrateful people complained, “Would it not have been better to remain there, eating leeks and onions beside the fleshpots of Egypt?” There they had to make bricks and suffer, yet they preferred slavery to being here with God, who gave them manna. They did not want this freedom; they preferred their former bondage.
It was so then, and it is so today: people choose to side with Beelzebub instead of Christ.
Did we not say that Satan was cast out? For those who desire freedom, Satan the tyrant has indeed been cast out. But those who do not desire it remain slaves of Satan, even though Christ came to set them free. Allow me to mention something I once heard in a discussion: “I do not accept Christ, because He wants me to be a slave.” Some people come very close to saying this. But what kind of slave does Christ want a person to be, compared with the slavery imposed by the devil? The phrase “servant of Jesus Christ” is often misunderstood. Yet we must distinguish between a person’s willing service to Christ and the bondage imposed by this fallen life.
At this point, then, I would like to give you an example so that you may understand what this service means. If I remember correctly, I once told a similar story while speaking here or in another community. In the days of the slave trade, people went to the market to buy slaves. One man did so. Among those he bought was a slave who stood out from all the others in chains, and he paid an astronomical price for him. The seller demanded a great deal of money. The buyer bargained over every slave, but in the end he paid the price.
The slave heard how much his new master had paid for him. He carried out his orders and obeyed him, but he was dejected. His master asked, “Why are you not cheerful?” The slave replied, “How could I be? I heard how much you paid for me. And what does that mean? I understand what I shall have to endure so that you can recover the price you paid and make a profit as well. You did not invest all that money out of love for mankind. You will wear me down and squeeze every ounce of labor from me, so that I earn back what you paid and then bring you a profit. How, then, can I be cheerful, knowing what awaits me?” The man who had bought him answered, “I did not buy you in order to exploit you.” “Then why did you buy me?” the slave asked. “I bought you in order...”},{
“...to set you free from slavery. You are free,” he told him. “You may go wherever you wish.” When the man heard this, he fell at his feet and said, “I will always be your servant.” This is Christ. This is why Christians, the faithful, become servants of Christ. Christ is not an inhuman tyrant; He is the Lord who loves mankind and cares for the human soul. If a person had understanding and a sense of grateful honor, this is what he would do: he would cling to Christ. Allow me to tell you one more thing. Listen.
Once, a man stood before three people who were each claiming his allegiance. The first was very rich, and the second richer still. One said to him, “If you come with me, you will have everything. You will own houses and cars; you will be free and have money to do whatever you want.” “Thank you very much,” the man replied. Then the second said, “If you come with me, I will make you important and raise you up. You will have glory and success. You will not need to work. You, your children, and whole generations after you will live in comfort. I guarantee your security.”
That is what he told him.
The third said, “I have nothing to offer you. I merely have something to show you.” He pulled back his sleeve and showed him the scar where his arm had been burned. “I simply remind you,” he said, “that this arm was burned when I saved you from a fire as a child.” The man ran to him, threw his arms around his neck, and said, “I will go with you. You are my savior, and it is with you that I must remain. I do not want the others; I thank them very much.” This is Christ. But we treat Christ as a decorative figure. We have a little icon of Him, offer incense before it, light our lamps—and that is all. He has no real say in our lives.
That is the reality. If a person were to give himself a canon—a rule of prayer—for one month, praying with the single phrase, “My Christ, show me what You are to me,” he would weep for the rest of his life. If Christ showed him what He had done for him, he would weep for as long as he remained in this world. This is why the words written through the Holy Spirit say: “Rejoice, you who cast the inhuman tyrant from his dominion; rejoice, you who revealed Christ as the Lord who loves mankind. Rejoice, you who deliver us from barbarous religion.”
You free us from barbarous religions. “Rejoice, you who rescue us from the mire of evil deeds.” Rejoice, for you free us from the mire, from the filth of shameful works. Without Christ, a person cannot cut off a single sin. He becomes a slave to his flesh and buries his talent in the earth, in the soil. Like the servant who buried his talent, he buries it in bodily indulgence, in his desires, in wantonness, and often even in unnatural passions. Only Christ can free a person from these shameful works of the flesh. “Rejoice, you who ended the worship of fire.” Even our own people now take part in fire-walking rites, such as the Anastenaria; that is idolatry. Christ came into the world to put an end to such things, which also occurred in the world during Old Testament times.
“Rejoice, you who deliver us from the flame of the passions.” A person’s passions burn him every day, and Christ gives him the power to be freed from the passions of the flesh. “Rejoice, faithful guide of the faithful to chastity.” Chastity means self-restraint, moral purity, purity within Holy Matrimony, and an undefiled marriage bed: neither allowing another to defile it nor defiling it yourself. Only Christ can accomplish these things. “And rejoice, gladness of all generations.” Truly, apart from Christ there is no genuine happiness. Material happiness is artificial. Unless a person possesses a deep, inward happiness welling up from within, he only appears to be happy; he is not truly happy.
“Rejoice, O Bride unwedded.” Here the scene changes, and the hymn shows us what happened when God intervened, as I mentioned earlier. In the stanza beginning with the letter kappa, it says: “Having become God-bearing heralds, the Magi returned to Babylon.” They did not return to Jerusalem. They were the first Apostles to proclaim the coming of Christ. The Twelve Apostles and the Evangelists who wrote the Gospels were not the first in this particular sense. The first to proclaim God’s coming into the world were these Magi. As we said, they proclaimed Him beyond the borders of Judea.
After them came those holy people who heard and saw what happened on the day of Pentecost—Parthians, Medes, people from Mesopotamia, Arabs, and others. When they returned to their homelands, they too preached. Then came the Twelve Apostles, the Seventy, the Fathers, and the rest, unless some had preached earlier. So, “Having become God-bearing heralds”—not bearers of mere human words, but bearers of God—“the Magi returned to Babylon.” They fulfilled the prophecy and proclaimed Christ to everyone wherever they went, leaving Herod behind as a babbling fool who did not know...”},{
“...how to sing Alleluia.” One need not see everything with one’s own eyes before giving glory to God; otherwise, the heart can become deceitful. Herod acted as he did. The Magi, then, departed by another way, as the Evangelist tells us, and returned to their own country. You know that when Herod realized that the Magi had outwitted him, he became exceedingly angry and issued an order that every child two years old and younger in that region should be slaughtered, so that the Lord might be killed among them. But, as we have said, the Child had divine protection. God intervened again and warned Joseph in a dream: “Take the Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for there are men seeking the Child’s life.” God intervened, and Joseph obeyed: “Arise, take the Child and His mother.”
Not “your wife and your child.” Notice the words: “the Child and His mother.” Nowhere after the birth is Joseph called His father. Indeed, in the third chapter of Luke, Jesus is described as the supposed son of Joseph. Why “supposed”? Because that is what people thought; in reality, He was not. And Joseph departed by night. God humbled Himself before Herod’s malice, although He could have struck him down. He did not do so. He preferred to flee and allow Herod to die a natural death, so that on that Day Herod could not say, “If I had known, I would have repented.”
“I left you alive, and you did not repent. I chose instead to spend six or seven years away in Egypt.” They did not know the way, nor did they have some other means of escape; and with an elder who was not an experienced traveler, they all chose this path in humility, so that Herod would have no excuse on that Day. And you know that afterward he did die a natural death, but in a manner no one could have imagined. He became swollen and worm-eaten, and they even had to tear down the doorway to carry him out. So greatly had the man swollen before he died. Once again God intervened and spoke to Joseph in Egypt in a dream: “Take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” And He told him, “Rise; you must set out now, during the night.” Who must do this? God Himself. This raises another question, with a different theological meaning.
Holy Scripture, the Annunciation, the Resurrection, the Apocalypse—in the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah. Read it there and you will see that the flight of our Most Holy Theotokos and our Lord into Egypt was written down 850 years before Christ. And here, in the section beginning with the letter lambda, it says: “By shining in Egypt the illumination of truth, You drove away the darkness of falsehood; for its idols, O Savior, unable to endure Your power, fell.”
What is being described there? When our Most Holy Theotokos went into Egypt with our Lord, the idols of the Egyptians fell, and all their marble images were shattered. The people even came into conflict with one another, claiming that certain powerful men had pulled them all down and destroyed them. They went to the oracles to ask the devil, but no oracle could give an answer. His dominion was scattered at the sight of the Theotokos. And as though all this were not enough, a little Child arrives there on a camel with a frail young maiden, and she becomes the means by which all that idolatry disappears from Egypt. This is what the hymnographer has in mind here. “By shining in Egypt”—this is the “swift cloud” that bears the God who is above all, the Most Holy Theotokos, the swift cloud who carries Him into Egypt. “By shining in Egypt the illumination of truth, You drove away the darkness of falsehood; for the idols of Egypt...”
“Unable to endure Your power, fell.” They could not withstand You, and so they fell and shattered. “And those delivered from them”—those who escaped that death and were delivered through Your coming—“cried out to the Theotokos.”
I want to explain what is said here. “Rejoice, restoration of mankind.” Is this not true? Who raised us up from sin and from the Fall? The fruit of the womb of the Theotokos. “Rejoice, downfall of the demons.” How were the demons destroyed and cast down? By the power of Him whom the Theotokos bore. “Rejoice, you who trampled down the delusion of deception.” Our Most Holy Theotokos, together with Christ, trampled down every delusion that existed. “Rejoice, you who exposed the fraud of the idols.” Through the Holy Spirit, Christ exposed the idols and proved that they were demonic. “Rejoice, sea that drowned the spiritual Pharaoh.”
Where did this take place? There at the sea, when Moses struck it with his staff and the sea opened, allowing the people to pass through. Then Pharaoh pursued them with his army and entered the sea after them. Once the people had come out on the other side, Moses struck again, the sea closed, and they were all drowned. This was a type of the Most Holy Theotokos. The Most Holy Theotokos would give birth to Him who would drown the spiritual Pharaoh—that is, the devil, who is drowned in Baptism. There we have the cloud, Moses, the water, and Pharaoh. Here we have the Holy Spirit, the baptismal font, the priest, the demons, and the person being baptized. Just as the spiritual Pharaoh was destroyed there...
so he is also destroyed in Baptism. That event was both a type of Baptism and a type of the Ever-Virginity of the Most Holy Theotokos, as I told you on another evening. “Rejoice, rock that gave drink to those thirsting for life.” What was the rock that Moses struck? It was Christ, who came from the Most Holy Theotokos. Read the tenth chapter of First Corinthians and you will find it there. “Rejoice, pillar of fire guiding those in darkness.” Who is the pillar of fire? Christ, who guides all those who dwell in the darkness of sin and unbelief. “Rejoice, shelter of the world, broader than the cloud.” She is the one who shelters everyone. That is why we depict her above the Holy Altar, in the apse, in the place of the ancient tabernacle, with her arms open. She awaits all who will pass through the Beautiful Gate, receiving Christ in Holy Communion, so that they may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. “Rejoice, successor to the manna as our food.” What was the manna? It was a type of Christ.
The Holy Spirit made the manna each day. And even today the Holy Spirit prepares the daily manna, which is the food of the human soul. That is, the Body and Blood of Christ are the food of the human soul. Of course, people do not believe these things. They believe that the Gifts do not become the Body and Blood of Christ, that they do not become Christ. They say that they remain merely a little bread and a little wine. They have very little faith. Others claim that if someone receives unworthily—that is, without metanoia, without Holy Confession, cut off from communion, and ultimately unreconciled—then he receives only wine and bread. No, he never receives merely wine and bread. The elements are wine and bread, but within them they bear life. They have life. If a person is prepared, repentant, and has made Holy Confession, then the benefit is...
eternal and immortal life. But if he receives in a disorderly and unprepared state, it is to his condemnation. That is why “many are weak and sick, and many have fallen asleep.” The human mind cannot grasp this. Let me give you a simple example. My friends, suppose an egg is brought before you. You look at it, and I ask, “What is this?” An egg. What do you mean by an egg? Does it have a shell on the outside? Yes, this is the shell. Inside its shell, the egg has a yolk and the white. What is inside the egg? It is food; agreed. What do we have now in the Divine Liturgy? We have food. We have the shell, as with the egg; agreed. But is there anything else? Yes. What is there? Life as well.
The egg does not contain only food; it is not merely bread, as we were saying. The egg also contains life. Put it beneath a hen’s wings, and you will see that there is life within it. In the same way, the bread that the priest gives you in the Church has life within it. It is not merely a little bread and a little wine. Do not be deceived. That is the meaning of “Rejoice, successor to the manna as our food.” We will not have the old manna falling from heaven. We will have the true manna. Christ is the successor and fulfillment of the ancient manna. “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.” Those who eat what I shall give, which is My Body, will live forever. Read the whole sixth chapter of John and follow its teaching, and you will see what this concerns. “Rejoice, land of promise.”
The land God promised to the people then, and the land He promises now—Paradise—is the land of promise. “Rejoice, land from which flow honey and milk”: spiritual honey and spiritual milk, by which the human soul is nourished. “Rejoice, Bride...”
Here we come to the events surrounding Christ’s birth: how He was conceived by our Most Holy Ever-Virgin, how she became pregnant, how she went up into the hill country of Judea, what she learned there, how Joseph received her, and how Joseph reacted. Then Joseph repented, because God intervened. They went to Bethlehem, Christ was born, the Magi were informed, the shepherds heard, and all these events are brought together. Magi came from the East, and so forth. And now we come to the Meeting of the Lord. A promise had been given to an elder, Symeon the God-receiver, that he would not die until he had held the Child in his arms. And now, after Christ our God has been born, we come to the Meeting of Christ. In the section beginning with the letter mu, it says:
As Symeon was about to depart from this present deceitful age, You were given to him as an infant, yet he recognized You as perfect God. Symeon was to leave this deceitful age—because, as you know, this age is a deceiver. It deceives people into thinking that they are made for this world, when in fact they are made for the world to come. It deceives them into thinking that they are permanent inhabitants of the earth, when they are only sojourners here, not permanent citizens. “Grant me the desired homeland, and make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” There lies man’s true homeland. That is why this present age is called deceitful. So Symeon, as he was preparing to depart from this deceptive world, received Christ in his arms. Though You were given to him as an infant, he knew You to be perfect God.
He held You in his arms as an infant, yet he recognized You as perfect God, and in amazement at Your ineffable wisdom he cried: “Alleluia! Glory to God.” He recognized Him. He did not say to His mother or to Joseph, “This Child is destined for the fall and rising of many.” He said, “Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.” You know the elder’s words. He was saying, “Now release me. Let me depart from this bodily life, for I have seen what I needed to see.” And so it happened.
the nature of mankind. This is a new creation, a new human nature. People can overcome the tempter and conquer many things through His power. The human person is changed and becomes Orthodox, becoming what he was meant to be. That is why, in January, at the beginning of the third stanza, following the order of our Church, we always say: “The Creator revealed a new creation when He appeared.”
We will marvel and say, “Rejoice,” and the other words that follow. But we shall stop here for now and continue, God willing, in our next talk. I do not think we should rush our thoughts merely to finish the whole subject.
