Summary
During Great Lent, the Church’s Friday services honor the Theotokos and reveal her role in God’s plan of salvation through the Akathist Hymn. The hymn presents her as the means through whom Adam is recalled, Eve’s tears are ended, the ancient curse disappears, and humanity’s path to Paradise is reopened through Christ’s Cross and Resurrection. Images such as Jacob’s ladder and a heavenly bridge portray the Theotokos as the one through whom God descended, while Christ alone raises humanity from earth to the Father.

By the grace of God, this evening I thought I would say something suited to this season. The foremost person in this season is our Lord Jesus Christ. Immediately after Him comes the Most Holy Theotokos. The first Person holds the first place, and the second person holds the second place.
And so our Holy Church honors her, in addition to the day of the Annunciation.
The Fridays of the first five weeks of Great Lent are dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, and they proclaim beforehand the role our Theotokos played in the divine economy of the Incarnation. Much is said about our Lord. Indeed, all of Holy Week is dedicated to Him, as is the first, preparatory period of the Triodion. Concerning these great events, then, one can learn many things about our Most Holy Theotokos from the Fridays dedicated to her, and particularly through the Akathist Hymn—what we call the Salutations to the Theotokos—because of the many greetings of “Rejoice” found within it.
The mind that composed this Akathist Hymn must have possessed a great deal of knowledge. Its material comes from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Tradition. Anyone who wishes to delve deeply into this beautiful poem, so rich in doctrine and so resonant, will likewise have much to learn: how these things came to pass, and why they all happened for the sake of man. For if a person does not understand what is being sung, the chanter goes to the analogion and chants the refrain, while that person merely murmurs inwardly, “Rejoice, O Bride unwedded,” and “Alleluia.” This is why, by the grace of the Most Holy Theotokos, I wanted to say something about this Akathist Hymn.
Here, too, we know something about it, and many people are drawn to it because the service is so distinctive and the person of the Most Holy Theotokos is so beloved. Even those who are not Christians or Orthodox tend to be more devoted to the Theotokos than to God, truth be told. We are, of course, misunderstood concerning the Lord, because every honor given to His Mother is reflected upon His own person. If He did not exist, what significance would a maiden from Nazareth have—the person who says, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord”? It is the Lord who gives this person her dignity and radiance. Therefore, my friends, the moon cannot shine by itself, nor can the stars; they all receive their light from another—from the Sun.
Yet the honor belonging to the second person was transferred even into worship, for many people went so far as to worship the person of our Most Holy Theotokos. You can find examples in every age. They may not wish even to hear the Lord’s name, but they constantly invoke our Most Holy Theotokos: “If the Most Holy Theotokos wills it,” and again, “the Most Holy Theotokos.” Let us see, then, who the Most Holy Theotokos is.
One will discover the prehistory of the Most Holy Theotokos. One will find symbols, images, and prophecies that speak of her. For, as we said in another homily, our Most Holy Theotokos emerges from this whole history. Like Christ, like the Holy Spirit, and like the Precious Cross, she too was marked out in sacred history from very, very far back—indeed, from the time when there were only two human beings and the devil in Paradise. Even then the Most Holy Theotokos and the role she would play were spoken of: “And I will put enmity,” and her seed would crush the serpent’s head. Her seed is Christ, who is God, and so forth—all the things we have said on the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, on the Annunciation, and during the days of the Nativity of Christ.
This entire composition is arranged as an acrostic. It has twenty-four letters, and therefore twenty-four stanzas, as they are called. The Church has divided them among four Fridays, with six stanzas on each Friday, together with the canon. Of the twenty-four stanzas, twelve contain six greetings beginning with “Rejoice,” while the other twelve contain only an “Alleluia.” Thus greetings of “Rejoice” are addressed repeatedly to the Theotokos, saluting her in accordance with the role she played.
From this jewel called the Theotokos, I wanted to begin with the first letter of the alphabet, where the priest stands for the first time before the icon of the Theotokos and says: “The chief commander of the angels was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos: Rejoice.” At once a person ought to investigate why he is called “the chief commander of the angels,” what he did, and what he said. To interpret this, you must go all the way back to Eden. You must find the angel from that time...
He is the Archangel Gabriel. The name Gabriel is interpreted as “God and man,” and this angel who bore that name was appointed to serve the mystery of the Incarnation. “God and man”—the name of the archangel sent to bring the message is interpreted in relation to the One who would come as God and man. The hymn therefore says, “The chief commander of the angels was sent from heaven.” He was sent from heaven; it was not the other angel, the apostate, who was sent. The apostate did not come from heaven, for he had fallen away.
In the earliest history, then, you find the first couple, Adam and Eve, and Eve deceived by the apostate angel. From that point begin the curse, the Antichrist, wars, famines, deaths, sicknesses, pain, toil, sweat, deceit, and sorrow. Everything you see is the offspring of sin. I do not know whether you have ever read when all these things began: they came after sin. So the hymn says here, “The chief commander of the angels was sent from heaven to say to the Theotokos: Rejoice.” Rejoice—be filled with joy. But why should she rejoice? The reasons follow below. This also has some connection with the Dormition.
Consider the icon of the Annunciation outside the church of Saint John in the Acropolis area. If you ever pass by the cathedral, look at the mosaic depicting the Annunciation. What is the proper icon of the Annunciation? It shows our Most Holy Theotokos with her head bowed, seated somewhere beside a building, while an archangel stands opposite her holding a staff and raising his hand. Some icons show him holding a lily. That is a later feature of Western origin. It is not Orthodox, because the lily is a symbol of purity and virginity.
This is the Western-style image that is sometimes seen, showing him holding a lily—or surrounded by lilies—symbols, that is, of virginity and purity.
The angel taking part in the dialogue is the same one, and the words he speaks refer explicitly to the Most Holy Theotokos and to the hour of the Annunciation. Listen to what I am going to tell you, and see what it means and where it will lead us. He begins with the angel: the chief commander who leads the host, not the apostate devil.
At that very moment, swift as lightning, the mystery of the Lord’s hour advanced. At the same moment, the Lady beheld our Lord becoming incarnate, while the angel greeted her. And so we sing to her the phrase that begins: “Rejoice, through whom joy shall shine forth.” This stanza says, “Rejoice, through whom joy shall shine forth.” That means we had no joy; we had sorrow. Our heads were always bowed; everyone went down to Hades and no one entered Paradise, for Paradise was closed.
Now we have come to smile again. The One who would crush the serpent’s head was coming, and He would open the door to the Kingdom of Heaven. The day after tomorrow, if you go to Church, you will hear a beautiful troparion proclaiming that the flaming sword no longer guards the gate of Paradise.
A flaming sword had been set there to guard it. Then came the Cross, opening a new path through the Crucified One, so that man might enter holy Paradise and go toward the true life. This is why the hymn says, “Rejoice, through whom joy shall shine forth; rejoice, through whom the curse shall cease.” The barriers began to fall from the moment the Most Holy Theotokos came into the world.
This is the fullness of time. Many years had passed since God said that the seed of the woman would come and crush the serpent’s head. During that time there were no souls pure in the required sense, fulfilling what God willed, so that He might dwell within one of them and borrow flesh from her.
God would not simply choose any child, but the child who would be capable of walking this path; God could not be mistaken. Among the other symbols in the canon of the Akathist Hymn is something we read in the Book of Judges concerning Gideon. It says of our Most Holy Theotokos: “the dew-covered fleece which Gideon foresaw.” What does this mean? Have you ever read the passage? If you have, you will see that God once sent an angel who found Gideon threshing his harvest.
It was summer. “I have something to tell you,” the Lord said to him. “Gather a small force and wage war against your enemies. God will help you.” Gideon did not believe he was capable of doing this, although he had heard the voice of the Lord God, and he said: “I will believe that you have truly been sent by God only if I place a fleece of wool on this threshing floor, and in the morning the fleece is wet while everything else is dry. Then I will believe that you truly are sent by God, and I will obey and do what you tell me.” And so that evening he laid down a fleece of wool—that is, a large mass of wool, as the Septuagint indicates: the whole fleece shorn from a sheep.
The next morning the fleece was wet, and when Gideon wrung it out, it filled a bowl with water, while everything around it remained dry. What does this signify, and why does the hymnographer place it here, saying, “the dew-covered fleece which Gideon foresaw”? The dryness of the threshing floor represented the sinfulness of humanity, which God saw from the foundation of the world. Yet in its midst He beheld the Most Holy Theotokos, represented by the fleece. As dew settles silently upon wool, without the wool perceiving anything, so, noiselessly and mysteriously, God caused the Most Holy Theotokos to conceive Christ.
One must speak of this in a manner worthy of God. If we may speak in human terms, when God beheld the Most Holy Theotokos through the ages, He was consoled. He was consoled in her person, because through her would come the Man who would take away the whole curse and all sin. A person therefore needs much preparation in order to follow what is written here. The “Rejoices” are chanted, and we may imagine that we are chanting along, while remaining outside what they teach. Thus, in the phrase, “Rejoice, through whom the curse shall cease,” the curse is extinguished. We then come to the words, “grace has come.” Since grace has come, we no longer live under the Law—that is, under the curse that came from the Fall.
People have now been set free from the curse. Yet if they willingly choose to place themselves under it again, reject their King, and live a carnal, worldly, satanic, egotistical, and demonic life, God is not to blame. God has given humanity the opportunity to be delivered from the curse of the Law of Moses. And so the first of the seventy-two salutations found in the service says: “Rejoice, through whom joy shall shine forth and the curse shall cease.” The second says: “Rejoice, restoration of fallen Adam.” Why is she called this? Because she will give birth to the new Adam, who will recall the old Adam, raise him up, and wipe away Adam’s Fall. In spirit, one must descend with Christ into Hades during those thirty-three hours.
From Great Friday until the dawn of the Resurrection, for thirty-three hours His soul was below, while His body lay in the tomb. He went down to accomplish His work there. We say these things, but often do not understand what we are saying. As the Giver of life, He descended into Hades, raised those held there, and took them with Him into Paradise. Before that day there was no separation there between Hell and Paradise; all descended together into Hades—Abraham, Daniel, and all those beloved by God. Christ descended, broke their bonds, healed them, and recalled them. He took them with Him and brought them into Paradise. He entered and found those who longed for the Son of God. This, then, is what is meant by “the restoration of fallen Adam.” Adam had fallen and could not rise again by himself.
It is true: one pair brought humanity to ruin, and one pair restored it. The first two fell through their egoism, disobedience, and refusal to repent; the other two restored what had fallen through humility and obedience.
“Rejoice, deliverance from the tears of Eve.” If a person knew the services of Vespers and Matins for the Sunday of Forgiveness, he would see Eve and Adam weeping outside Paradise. There is no more bitter day than the day on which our first parents departed from Paradise. There you will hear and see them standing outside, striking their cheeks and imploring Paradise to intercede with God, that its gates might open again and allow them to enter. But God had to give them an opportunity for repentance and prevent them from eating of the tree of life and remaining eternally in their fallen condition. The medicine had to be given for their Fall.
They had been in Paradise, but they did not repent after their disobedience. Each blamed the other: the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the serpent. They did not repent. Here, then, the hymn greets the Most Holy Theotokos with the words, “Rejoice, deliverance from the tears of Eve.” The tears now cease; everything changes. The way is opened through the Jordan, the Red Sea, and even Hades itself, because Christ entered Hades and thus enabled humanity to return to Paradise. Then it says: “Rejoice, height difficult for human reasonings to ascend.” The human mind grows dizzy before this mystery. That is why many become heretics: they try to comprehend the Mystery by their own knowledge.
This is not how a human being can approach it. You must come to faith; you must bow down and say, “I believe.” The Most Holy Theotokos herself paused when she heard that she would conceive and said, “I know not a man.” But the angel’s answer was, in effect: “I cannot tell you how; I can tell you what will happen. The Holy Spirit will overshadow you.” How the Holy Spirit will accomplish it, I cannot explain. How can a creature interpret the works of God? These things are done by God and can be understood only in a manner worthy of God. Leave the mystery as mystery; do not imagine that you can fully comprehend and explain the things of God.
Peter writes, as does Paul in the Epistle to the Hebrews, that even the angels desire to look into these things—that is, they bend down from heaven, longing to see what is about to take place.
The morning star appears before the sun and announces that the sun is about to rise. These things are connected. Here the hymnographer presents the Most Holy Theotokos as a star through whom we shall find the Sun—the Sun of Righteousness—and greets her with the words: “Rejoice, star revealing the Sun.”
“Rejoice, womb of the divine Incarnation.” It was divine, not merely human: God was incarnate within her. Do you remember what the hymn says later? “You contained the whole God within your womb.” Her womb was not merely man-bearing, but God-bearing. Then she went to meet Elizabeth. The Most Holy Theotokos hears these words, “Rejoice,” yet a question arises within her concerning what has been said. The same happens with logismoi, intrusive thoughts. A thought comes into your mind. If you are not watchful enough to reject it at once, but receive it, open it up, and begin discussing it, the devil will cast in a second thought, greater than the first, with still more arguments about the same matter.
If you receive that thought again, hold on to it, and continue discussing it, he will cast in an even greater one. From one greater thought to another, he will fill your head, lead you into sin, and accomplish his purpose. You must not accept it at all. Say, “I see what you are, and I give you back; I cast you away.” That is how a person closes the door against it.
The Most Holy Theotokos, then, heard the message, but answered that what was being said to her was extraordinary—extraordinary to her human understanding. Ordinarily, a child is not conceived without a man and a woman. Yet she did not enter into a whispered conversation with the devil. Notice that such whisperings present themselves as innocent, harmless, and natural. Consider what the devil used in Paradise to accomplish his work: the most subtle of the animals. When something appears harmless, a person may easily accept it. This is what happens to many people. They begin with something that seems natural, and eventually find themselves cast down. The Most Holy Theotokos, however, does not accept the thought into her soul. She stops it and asks for an explanation.
“How,” she says, “can conception come to me without marriage?” How can you speak of “the conception of a maiden who has not known a man”? Though I am betrothed, Joseph was not given to me as a husband, but as my protector. This is why the Evangelist says that, while she was still betrothed, she went up to Bethlehem to be registered. She is the Bride, yet the Unwedded Bride, as the hymn declares at the end of every stanza. “Tell me, then,” she asks, “how can this conception take place without a man and without seed?” The angel did not know how to explain the manner of it. As I told you earlier, he could not say how, just as we do not know how. But we do know what occurred.
The third stanza reveals her reasoning. As the Most Holy Theotokos seeks an answer, it says: “Seeking to know knowledge that cannot be known, the Virgin cried to the ministering angel: ‘Tell me, how can a son be born from a pure womb?’” This is what she asks: she wants the angel to explain the manner in which conception can occur without seed and without a man. The angel then takes courage and cries aloud to her: “Rejoice, initiate of the ineffable counsel.” Notice that these words are addressed to a person.
This is the counsel of God: a Mystery will be accomplished in you. Do not seek to subject the Mystery to human reasoning. The word “mystery” comes from a word meaning “to close the mouth.” My mouth is closed; I do not know how to answer. It is a Mystery. You cannot interpret or explain it. You are the person who will take part in this hidden and benevolent counsel of God. “Rejoice, faith of those who pray in silence.” Do not seek knowledge; receive through faith the Mystery that will be accomplished through you. It will take place miraculously, so do not demand a rational explanation. The next “Rejoice” makes this even clearer:
“Rejoice, prelude of the miracles of Christ.” What does this mean? What was Christ’s first miracle? Everyone says it was the miracle at Cana. That is not so. Christ’s first miracle was accomplished in His Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, when He was miraculously incarnate within her. That was Christ’s first miracle. “Rejoice, prelude of the miracles of Christ.” The first miracle is that Christ came to be within you, that God became man. The first miracle takes place in you. “Rejoice, crown of His doctrines.” You know that Christ is the foundation of every doctrine.
This is precisely why those who deny Christ also reject the decisions that rightly define the doctrines concerning the Father, the divinity of the Holy Spirit, the divinity of Jesus, the Most Holy Theotokos, her Ever-Virginity, the Precious Cross, and so forth. Heretics want us to set doctrine aside. But to set doctrine aside means to push Christ to the margins and then reason among ourselves as though we knew better. The Church did not first receive her doctrines from the later councils. Pay attention to what I am saying. If you read the sixteenth chapter of Acts, verse four, you will find the phrase “the decrees that had been decided.” The Apostles assembled and defined doctrine.
The priests and the others then transmitted the doctrines approved by the Apostles and the elders. There were five apostolic councils before the First Ecumenical Council. If you have the Rudder, read the introductory material to the First Ecumenical Council, and you will find these things there. Here, then, the hymn says: “Rejoice, crown of His doctrines.” Never disregard what has been defined as doctrine, because every such definition is sealed; it bears the seal of the Holy Spirit. All the councils were accompanied by miracles. The First Ecumenical Council, which proclaimed the divinity of Jesus, had four miracles. At the Fourth, the doctrine concerning the hypostasis of the All-Holy Spirit was confirmed through Saint Euphemia.
Many people know the miracle of Saint Euphemia. One side wrote its confession of faith on a sheet of paper, and the other side did the same. They opened the reliquary of the Saint and placed both papers in her hands. They sealed it in the presence of both parties and opened it three days later. They found one paper at her feet and the other in her hands. This is why our Church beautifully chants: “You greatly gladdened the Orthodox and put those of false belief to shame, O Euphemia, fair virgin of Christ; for you firmly confirmed what the Fathers had rightly defined.” At the First Ecumenical Council, Saint Spyridon used the tile to demonstrate the Mystery of the Godhead. Saint Achillios, a member of the First Ecumenical Council, made oil flow from a stone before the Ecumenical Council and in the presence of Arius, who had challenged him.
Saint Nicholas received his omophorion and the Gospel while he was in prison, where they had confined him because he had slapped Arius. And another saint, whose name escapes me, performed yet another miracle; I cannot remember which miracle it was. So when you hear the word “dogma,” take off your hat in reverence. The Holy Spirit is speaking. Consequently, you cannot set yourself above the dogmas, nor can you put them aside and say, “Let us speak as though we were superior people.” Therefore: “Rejoice, the foundation of His dogmas. Rejoice, heavenly ladder by which God descended. Rejoice, bridge leading those on earth to Heaven.”
In the canon of the Akathist, we find that Jacob’s ladder represents, symbolizes, and prefigures the Most Holy Theotokos. Outside Jerusalem, on the road toward Ramallah, is the place where Jacob had his dream at night, after placing a stone beneath his head and lying down to sleep. He saw a ladder stretching from Heaven to earth, with angels ascending and descending upon it. The Church takes this image and applies it to the Most Holy Theotokos. My dear friends, there is an important phrase here: “by whom.” Here is the ladder, the Most Holy Theotokos, by whom God descended and became man. And here is Christ, through whom human beings ascend and once again become gods by grace.
If the Theotokos had not brought Christ down to us, man could never have gone to God, because man cannot reach God by his own power. “No one comes to the Father except through Me,” says Christ. Apart from Jesus, no one inherits the Kingdom of Heaven. The hymnographer, then, has both of these truths in mind here.
Man did not come to remain on earth. He came in order to depart, and he departs in order to abide forever. That Kingdom will have no end; this earthly kingdom will come to an end. Therefore, we must also greet the Most Holy Theotokos, who, through her purity, became the means by which God was drawn down to earth like lightning to a lightning rod. She brought down Christ, who offers Himself as the way by which we ascend and once again become gods by grace. For man, in the state to which he had fallen, could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven by himself. Christ transforms this man—the old man, the corrupted man—and makes him a new man, able and fit to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. For this reason Christ took our human nature upon Himself, sanctified it, and left it to us for our sanctification, like a life-giving remedy placed within us.
That is why a person must frequently receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion: so that his very constitution may be transformed and made fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. Man, too, must become spiritual. Flesh and blood will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Man must become spiritual, be counted worthy of that Resurrection, as Christ says, and draw near to Christ, who has entered Heaven as a forerunner on our behalf. Since I have used the word “forerunner,” I do not know whether you have ever considered it. There are three forerunners: John, before Christ’s first coming into the world; another before Christ comes a second time; and Christ Himself, as the forerunner on our behalf, before mankind enters Heaven. This is what Paul says in the final verse of the sixth chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews.
Thus the Most Holy Theotokos is greeted as the bridge that makes it possible for the faithful to go up to Heaven: “Rejoice, wonder greatly proclaimed among the angels. Rejoice, wound greatly lamented by the demons.” Truly, Satan—and I do not know whether I have told you this before—did not hate Christ as much as he hated the Most Holy Theotokos, who enclosed God within human flesh and, in this way, brought Him down into Hades.
There Satan encountered God; he encountered Heaven itself. That is why he later said, “It would have been better for me not to take the Son of Mary down below. I took Him as one of the living who had died, but there I encountered Him as God.” And he says, “With the tree I filled Hades, and with the Tree He emptied Hades.” Through the tree of knowledge and disobedience, Satan filled Hades; through the wood of the Cross, Christ emptied Hades. The person of Mary is therefore a wound greatly lamented by Satan. “Rejoice, for you ineffably gave birth to the Light. Rejoice, for you taught no one how this came to pass.” The birth, he says, is beyond explanation—ineffable and beyond interpretation. No one at all, neither angel nor archangel,
can tell us how this happened. Human reasoning is called to take off its hat in reverence and believe. What more does it want? These greetings concern the Most Holy Theotokos asking how these things would happen—how she would conceive and give birth. Brothers and sisters, remember that to follow the Akathist Hymn, one must keep the Annunciation in mind. At a certain point, after the Archangel had presented many assurances, the Most Holy Theotokos raised her hands and said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” This is her answer. Here the introductory dialogue comes to an end. Immediately, “The power of the Holy Spirit then overshadowed the Maiden who knew no marriage, that she might conceive.” Thus, in the fourth stanza, beginning with the letter delta, it says: “The power of the Most High then overshadowed the Maiden who knew no marriage, that she might conceive.”
She had no experience of marriage; she had no husband. And for whom was this done? God wills salvation for everyone, but He also requires their willing response. He compels no one, because Christ is born and offered for all, yet salvation reaches those who desire Him. Here, then, human freedom is not violated or set aside. The hymn says: “He revealed her as a fruitful field, sweet to those who desire to reap salvation.” Does it say everyone, or many? “Those who desire to reap salvation.” Even to this day, although the field of the Most Holy Theotokos brought forth the sweetest Jesus, many do not wish to reap salvation from Him. Salvation depends upon...
the fruit of the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. From Him you will receive salvation. Your salvation does not come from your own works; do not be deceived. You will reap your salvation from the womb of the Most Holy Theotokos. Your works will be found, and you will receive your recompense for them. But when you know Christ, have a living relationship with Christ, have been baptized into Christ, confess Christ, and receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion, then you truly desire salvation. This is why the hymn says, “those who desire.” Many people today do not want Christ. They may go to church on Sunday, yet by their way of life they show that they do not want Him. He exposes their lawless life, their unlawful relationships, their dishonest money, their wrongful course, and their corrupt dealings. That is why they do not want Christ. Instead, they fashion a Christ of their own, one who will approve their theology and accommodate everything they do.
That is what they seek: for the Gospel to be altered, so that every “no” and “you shall not” may become “yes.” But Christ did not do this, nor will He ever do it. Let us therefore take care to correct ourselves. Christ forces no one: “If anyone desires to come after Me.” A Father of the Church expresses it beautifully and concisely—and I have quoted it many times: “He who created you without you cannot save you without you.” Would the conception of Christ in the Theotokos have taken place if she had not freely consented and said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord”? Read the accounts of the Annunciation both to Zacharias and to the Theotokos. You will see the distinction between them, what was said in each case, and what resulted from each response.
God was waiting for her to say “yes,” and she had to say it freely. When she said “yes,” the two wills—the will of God and the will of man—were united, and the conception took place. The same thing happens today. If we do not know the things of God, and if we have not been benefited by God as much as we should have been, the fault lies with us. We did not desire it. Others desired it and received it. John the Theologian is called “the beloved disciple,” and Jesus Christ Himself calls him this. Some mothers and mothers-in-law claim to love their children and sons-in-law while keeping them under their thumb. Is that what love means? Certainly not. John is called “beloved,” and Christ loved him greatly, because John himself loved greatly and was greatly loved. John’s love for Jesus was expressed first, and then he received the love of our Christ.
Those who advance in virtue are sanctified because they struggle more intensely and cut down their pride and everything that can harm them. For this very reason, Christ finds room within them and sanctifies them more fully. Thus the hymn says here: “Those who desire it will reap salvation.” Then we come to the fifth stanza, which speaks about the Most Holy Theotokos going up into the hill country. She had conceived, but she could not calmly wait to discover whether the conception had truly taken place, since, as you know, a woman must wait a certain length of time before knowing that she is pregnant. She could not wait, especially after what the Archangel had told her—that...
her kinswoman was already in her sixth month. That kinswoman was the mother of the honorable Forerunner, and although there was a difference of about eighty years between them, she was related to the Most Holy Theotokos, because the Theotokos’s own mother had given birth to her very late in life. So she arose and quickly went into the hill country. But our time has run out. We shall stop here and, God willing, continue next time.
