Summary
Holy Scripture is the Christian’s divinely inspired guide and must be interpreted through the Holy Fathers, who were illumined by the same Holy Spirit. Every person freely chooses between Christ’s cross-bearing path and Satan’s promises of worldly pleasure, self-interest, and a fleeting present. Believers should seek first God’s Kingdom and righteousness, entrusting material needs to God while preparing the soul for death, judgment, and eternal life.

I know what kinds of people are present in an audience. I want to believe that they are people concerned about their salvation. That is enough for me. For when someone is concerned about his salvation, he is ready to listen, to pay attention, and to fill in anything that may have been omitted, because we are human: we have weaknesses, we make mistakes, and certain things escape our notice.
For a person to find the right direction, fulfill his purpose on earth, and one day reach a good end, he must have a guide. Without a guide, people easily go astray. The guide Christ has bestowed upon this world is Holy Scripture—but Holy Scripture as interpreted through the Holy Fathers, who were guided by the same Holy Spirit who guided those who wrote the Scriptures. For if we accept, as is true, that Scripture was written through the Holy Spirit, then it must also be interpreted through the Holy Spirit. The most reliable interpreter is the one who wrote it. Who knows a machine better than the person who made it? It is exactly the same in this case. Yet from my limited experience, I know that Orthodox Christians do not read Scripture. We know very little of Scripture, and so many go astray and fashion a religion of their own, made to their own measure, always with concessions and weaknesses. They have come to regard this way of thinking as perfectly natural, as though it led to the Kingdom of Heaven. Someone may ask, “But is it easy to master Holy Scripture?”
Is it easy to read Holy Scripture and put it into practice? I recommend both books, the Old and the New Testament. If a person cannot put the whole of Holy Scripture into practice, let him at least seek a general knowledge of it. But if he wishes, let him concentrate on three chapters: Matthew 5, 6, and 7, or the corresponding opening chapters of Luke—chapters 4, 5, and 6—because the Lord said the same things there. This is what is called the Law of the Gospel.
There we find the whole exalted work of cultivating the soul. If a person resolves to study, practise, and live these three chapters from the whole of Scripture, both Old and New Testament, let him know that he will not merely be saved, but will enter the beauty of Paradise. And yet this law—the so-called Law of the Gospel, the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount—is unknown to most people and, consequently, is not put into practice. Only a small proportion of Christians even know what it says and what it asks of every person, much less practise it. Thank you.
Fewer still are those who have put into practice what Christ proclaims and asks of man. I would like simply to select one small part from these chapters, only a few verses, so that you may see how deeply Christ speaks to man and brings him face to face with the Lord Himself. For unless a person comes face to face with the Lord through Scripture—when we speak of Scripture, we mean Christ upon the page. When He was here, we saw Him in the flesh, and He spoke to us in the flesh. Now He speaks to us through the written page. It is Christ upon the page.
It is the Word whom we behold upon the page. When a person wishes to speak to his God, he can speak to Him through prayer. When he wants God to speak to him, he reads His Gospel, he reads His Scripture, and then there is communion between them. The person tells God what is in his heart, and God makes known to him what benefits his soul. I say, then, that most of us today lack knowledge of this Scripture, and especially of these chapters, in which the whole work is contained. When you undertake the work of building a room or an apartment,
more labor, expense, and work may go into the finishing than into laying, say, the floors and roof, costly though those may be. Yet it is the finishing work that makes the apartment useful and fit for someone to live in. A person says, “I am a Christian. I have icons in my home, I occasionally go to Church, I occasionally confess, and I am careful not to tread on ants.” These things are not the whole of Christianity. The weightier details that concern a person are found in these chapters. If you wish, do not merely read them; study them. Reading is not simply passing over the words. Walk through them, line by line, verse by verse, trait by trait.
What does this verse say? What must my response to it be? Do I ever put it into practice? Did I even realize that this is being asked of me? These things were not printed, as you yourselves understand, merely to fill sheets of paper, to be sold for profit, and to bring in money.
Through these words, He speaks to His child, to whom He has left a sacred deposit and for whom He has made a special testament, and He entreats him. Thank you, thank you.
Christ said nothing that is not for man’s benefit—not only for this temporary life here, but above all for what endures. He speaks about what is temporary and what is eternal. Christ, as the master craftsman, teaches man how to live well even here—not according to what man imagines a good life to be, but according to what Christ knows it to be. For by our own judgment we have invented many things that we call good, though they are actually very ugly. But if we make Christ our measuring rule and Christ our scales, then we will judge correctly. If we desire it, God will bless what concerns this world and will also secure for us that other world. For, whether we like it or not, we are made principally of two things. We are not body alone,
but spirit as well.
There is confusion even among Christians, because they fail to distinguish the spirit—the soul—and give greater care to what they can see, since the soul, the spirit, is invisible. Saint Basil the Great says somewhere, “Pay attention to your partner and give it its proper place.” The soul is superior to the body. If you do not wish to give the superior partner, the soul, all that it deserves, consider it this way: if the whole were divided into one hundred parts, ninety-five would belong to the soul and five to the body. Consequently, ninety-five parts of a person’s concern should be for the soul,
and only the remaining few—five parts—should be for the body. But Saint Basil says that if you are unwilling to give the superior and better partner what it deserves—the soul, which is also the cause of the body’s living existence, since without the soul the body is dead, a corpse, and no longer a human being—then at least give them equal care. As much as you care for the body, care also for the soul. Most religious people do not show this care or make this proper evaluation. They see themselves only as beings of flesh, and they view the people under their influence in the same way. Many mothers look upon their children as ornaments, as objects. They do not see them as souls, as beings made for eternity, as persons. They see only their bodies: they must not come home bleeding or dirty, and so on.
If their children have become unruly, they say, “There is no point discussing it. They will sort these things out when they grow up.” They do not want anyone to point out serious faults to them. What I urge is what Saint Basil the Great says: give the superior partner what it deserves. At the very least, divide your care equally—“fifty-fifty,” as foreigners say: fifty percent here and fifty percent there. Does this happen among us? No, it does not. We give ninety percent to the body and ten percent to the soul. Our chief concern is how we shall establish ourselves here, take root here, and live here. Then, on the basis of certain falsehoods of our own—some supposed good works—we assume that we have secured everything else as well. That is a mistake. Thank you.
Man stands before God and the devil. They are two rulers: one of Paradise and the other of Hell. In his freedom, man will attach himself here and now to one of the two. Here he will choose for himself one of the two paths. It is not imposed upon him, although Christ could impose it. Christ created him and, respecting his dignity, leaves him free. “Before him,” the Wisdom of Sirach says in chapter 15, “are fire and water; stretch forth your hand to whichever you desire.” Nothing more is needed to make you responsible. God gives you everything and says, “Choose.” Yet man sides with Satan, and Satan promises many things:
this world, the flesh, gratification, worldly approval, self-interest, fashion, and the ego. Strangely enough, he gratifies everything that appeals to man. Christ promises nothing for the present; He promises these things for the future. Here, indeed, He tells man that he must take a cross upon his shoulder. This is the faith required of everyone: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him take up his cross daily and follow Me.” There is no one who does not bear a cross. Since Christ carried His own Cross, He requires us to take up our own cross. A person who imagines himself crucified with Christ but bears no cross is not a Christian. And so, I tell you, standing before these two masters, man deserts to one side or the other. Thank you. He sides with Satan, who promises him the present.
But I would like to know: does the present even exist? If man understood that there is no present, he would die of shame. The present does not exist. What, then, is Satan selling? He does not possess the present! What does Satan claim to hold in his hands? The present! Tell me, what is it? Is tomorrow the present? Is even the next second, while I am speaking, the present? What is the present? It is still the future. The present does not exist. Whatever I have said is already in the past, and whatever I am about to say is still in the future. What, then, is the present? It does not exist. And are you not afraid that the switch may suddenly be turned off and you will cry out for Christ? What present are you speaking of? Do you imagine that things will somehow settle themselves and everything will be resolved? There is no such certainty. Something unexpected happens, one event follows another, and before you know it everything has changed. A thought is cut short.
These are the things on which you relied because they were promised to you. Why, then, do you think about and believe this lie? Have you asked Satan whether he possesses Paradise? Say to him, “Where is Paradise? What is it like?” He will answer, “I have no Paradise. I have only Hell.” And shall I follow you? Does he put a noose around your neck? No. He merely suggests something to you, and you like it. This is how sin occurs, just as the first sin occurred. Satan did not force Eve; he merely suggested self-exaltation to her, a shortcut by which she might become God. She did not wish to follow the path God had shown her: to exercise self-restraint by obeying His command not to eat from that tree, and afterward to eat from the tree of life.
She wanted it on her own terms. She departed by another way, trying to break through and enter quickly. That was a mistake. There is only one way. Go and stand before the iconostasis and look at the Royal Doors. Look also at the north door and the south door. What is the meaning of this? We all desire to enter within. We are journeying toward the Kingdom of Heaven. That central door was not opened there by chance, nor is it called the Beautiful Gate without reason. It has a purpose. Once, that gate did not exist. Christ opened it when He was crucified on Golgotha. It is the veil that was torn. That veil was a type of the sin which our first parents placed between God and themselves. Christ came, tore up the record of mankind’s debt, and opened this door to the Kingdom of Heaven. It is now called the Beautiful Door, the Beautiful Gate, because you will enter through it. If you try to go by some other way, the angel standing there with his sword will stop you; you will not enter. You must go by the middle way.
Will you pass through with your ego, by your own road, through your own works, your own foolish schemes, and your possessions? Certainly not. The angel stands guard with his sword. The Lord’s gaze points toward the tree of life. You must settle everything there in the middle. You must speak about it with these two: the Most Holy Theotokos and Christ. There you will set things in order, there you will make things right, and there you will pass through the great distance. Christ is the mediator; there is no other way. Some blaspheme by imagining that there are other roads to heaven. Years ago, a Freemason told me how he had gone to see Nasser at the time of the Revolution. I asked him, “How did you gain access there?” He replied, “There is a way.” Then he showed me a Masonic publication and pointed something out to me. The Freemason said, “Yes. Fortunately, all doors are open to us except the door of heaven.” Then he added, “And we Freemasons will manage to open that one too.”
Antoulakakis, a member of Parliament from Crete. “What are we going to accomplish?” A few days later he committed suicide in Kolonaki; he fell from the third-floor window of his home. Thank you. I remember his words: “What are we going to accomplish?” You will accomplish nothing there. The one path to the tree of life was guarded then by a flaming sword, and the way leading to the tree of life is guarded even today. The other doors are barred. There is only one way: you must pass through the Beautiful Gate. So make peace with Christ, repent, seek the holy intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in your confession, and come here before the Beautiful Gate to receive your ticket—the Body and Blood of Christ—“for the remission of sins and eternal life.” Thank you.
And so we come to the inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven, which is not a wage earned by merit. The Kingdom of Heaven is an inheritance; it is a gift. It is inherited by those who are kin. But how can a person grasp these things and pay attention to them? He makes up his own little religion and says, “I am all right. I have not killed anyone; I have not stolen from anyone.” Sin today happens just as the first sin did. Satan suggested to Eve, “In this way you will become God. You will have an easy life and do nothing.” She liked the suggestion, discussed it, looked at the fruit, tasted it, and broke the commandment. Then death entered, and evil came about. Sin is presented to us in the same way today.
Does a person need to sin? It is Satan’s trick. Have you ever reflected that you are not a permanent inhabitant of the earth, but only a tenant here? Have you thought about that? At any hour, at any moment, you may have to leave. Nothing here is truly your own. What did you bring with you, and what will you take away? You came with empty hands, and with empty hands you will depart. How often do you think about this? You think that death is the end. The grave is not the end; it is the beginning.
You must begin now to put things in order, and then sit down and ask yourself: Which master do I follow? Christ—the Crucified One, the Nazarene, the Son of Mary—or the devil, who promises me everything and keeps singing sweetly to me? There is no third choice. And as for the things he promises, I may not even live long enough to see or think about them, much less attain and enjoy them. Many people even accuse God when they see sinful and unjust people, far from Christ, conquering this world and apparently enjoying His blessing. “Look who has prospered, while you went about carrying the Cross. Look at those to whom God gives everything. Is God not unjust?” Seriously? And so I place the blame on God.
God may permit this for a purpose. Tell me: did Satan have the right to kill Job’s wife? He did. Why did he not kill her? He kept her in reserve so that she could torment Job and wear him down. And what would the world have said? “Did God have some special arrangement with Job’s wife? Her children are gone, the servants are gone, her husband is covered with sores from head to toe, yet she walks about as healthy as a partridge. Did she have an angel protecting her? Was she such a good woman?” No. The devil had preserved her.
If you stop and reflect on these things, you will renounce that way of thinking. You will say, “My God, what am I thinking? What am I doing? What am I saying? How should I understand these things? What should I do, and how should I think?” Many people recall the words found in the fourteenth chapter of Proverbs: there are ways and opinions that seem right to a person.
Yet their end leads down into the hidden depths of Hades. A person must therefore be watchful and ask: Which of these two masters are we following? How do we conduct ourselves, and how do we act? Satan has a considerable share and a powerful purpose even in actions that appear very proper. People often speak to me about the good deeds of others and about the Kingdom of Heaven, yet Satan may be at work in the deed itself. We lack the measuring rod and the scales needed to judge correctly whether what we are doing is truly pleasing to God. Even if we have done everything commanded of us, what are we? “We are unprofitable servants.” That is what we ought to say. But who believes it? We imagine that we have passed the examination, while we have already sent others to Hell: “He will be condemned; he is like this; he does this and that,” and so forth.
We become judges, we become angels, we become masters. We take God’s place. Will we be able to show our face before God? We will have no face to show before Him. In light of what I have been telling you, let me give you an example. What strange things happen! Because of the world and the flesh, many people try...
to fit both things into their lives. They say that they want dear little Christ, but they also want the world. They want to avoid fasting; they want to avoid having children; and they want every comfort. Yet those comforts are often paid for with injustice, falsehood, stolen goods, fraud, and a multitude of other things. They want both. “What, are we supposed to become monks? Let the monks be the ones who are lost!”
Thank you.
You cannot follow the monk’s way, nor the way of abstinence and chastity, so you condemn it because you cannot live it. But you cannot jump two metres either, and yet you applaud the person who can. Why do you not do the same in this case? “Because I cannot.” Why, then, do we condemn others merely to conceal our own weaknesses? For the most part, as I told you, we try to arrange matters so that we can have both. That is why Christ warns us with these words: “No one can serve two masters.” It cannot be done. Whenever you act for the sake of the world, the flesh, self-interest, the ego, and so forth, you are not serving the Lord; you are pleasing Satan.
If a person begins to measure his life in this way, he will discover that he is not under Christ’s authority; and if he is well-disposed, he will want to change. For he will love the one and hate the other. A man with two girlfriends is not truly devoted, nor is a woman with two suitors.
A person must discern and weigh the value of things, as Saint Basil the Great said in the passage I mentioned to you two days ago. This thought...
is planted in a person by Satan, who then deceives him through it.
Here is an exhortation: a person must attend to the state of his soul and be watchful regarding the world, his flesh, and then the devil. For a person faces three enemies, in ascending order: first the flesh, second the world, and third Satan. Satan is man’s last enemy. Man’s first enemy is the flesh, which he cannot cast off or send away. It is so whining and so deceitful that it fools the person, deceives the soul, and enslaves it. The partnership between soul and body is like that of a dog and a cat.
What benefits and pleases the flesh does not benefit or please the soul. And whatever the soul desires and whatever benefits it, the flesh does not want. They are constantly quarrelling, always at war. We must take care that the rider, which is the soul, never becomes the beast of burden. Yet we hand the reins to the beast, and the rider becomes the beast of burden. We serve whatever the flesh wants, and we work and think according to the flesh rather than according to the soul. This must not happen. The flesh must serve the soul. It must be an instrument, a means, a vehicle—like an animal upon which the soul always rides. The soul must govern and have the first place, while the flesh does the work. These are the proper safeguards of the soul.
Satan plants the thought that a person can enter by some other way. As you know, he fills him with concerns, anxieties, and fears, until the person feels compelled to accumulate, collect, and save up things that are often unnecessary. Proper care has its limits. God does not want a person to be lazy; He wants care that is lawful, moral, and prudent. Indeed, He directs us to look at the ant: see what it does and how it stores up its food during the summer, each thing in its proper season.
Look closely at such matters and set some other concerns aside. If we examine all these things, we will find that they involve excessive anxiety. Everything we acquire must be acquired lawfully. You must understand where the centre of gravity lies. A person may think that a series of good deeds, considered apart from the Gospel and without asking whether they proceed from an evangelical spirit, will secure the Kingdom of Heaven for him. Yet those deeds may be mixed with his own attachments and weaknesses. For example, you see a married couple offering twenty thousand drachmas for your work. At that moment, what is the man doing? He may be giving away what should have fed his children.
I met a well-dressed woman, a wealthy woman, as the world would say. “How are you?” I asked. “You do not look well.” “I am at peace now,” she answered. “I have no more worries.” “Why? What had been troubling you?” “Do you not know that I have four children—three boys and one girl?” “Very well, I can understand being anxious about the girl. But why were you anxious about the three boys?” “Should I not have provided something for them? Should I not have left them something?” Seriously.
“And did you leave them what they needed?” “Of course. I left an apartment to each of them—to the three boys and to the girl. I also left the girl a small studio apartment.” “So,” I said, “you left all that to your children, and it cost you your whole life. But what did you do for yourself? You did those things for your children, although they did not truly need them. My child, what did you do for yourself? If you die tonight, what will you personally have in the life to come? What your children received does not pass with you into the next life. You laboured out of affection for them, but you did nothing for your soul. From now on, use the short time left to prepare something for your soul. Until now, you have prepared nothing for it.”
It is not wrong, of course, to help those who are weak and in need. But let us not suppose that a person has fulfilled his purpose simply because he helped his son acquire something material, something that may last only a few years and then disappear. People burden themselves with cares for earthly things, and then sleep peacefully, imagining that they are certain to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven and that God would be unjust to say to them: “I do not know you. You never trusted Me; you never asked Me.” My beloved, we do not know the way of salvation. Have you heard how Christ orders and arranges these things? A little further on He says: “Seek first...”},{
His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. A garment, a roof over your head, a piece of bread, medicine, and whatever else you need—I shall give you these things. You must labor to gain the Kingdom. Yet who understands this? Man’s true concern is not vineyards, olive groves, or fields. His concern is the Kingdom. Does man know that he is called to be a prince? No one knows it. And why does he not know it? Because he does not live like a prince. If he truly did, he would know it.
Look at how often Christ speaks about the Kingdom and what you must do in order to become a prince: “Come, inherit the Kingdom of the Father.” Where are your works? If you have no title to inherit the Kingdom, how will you become a prince and receive that inheritance? Does man understand this? Does he at least humbly rejoice that he has been destined to live in the Kingdom with the King, with the Queen, the Most Holy Theotokos, and with the princes, the Saints? Does he believe it? He sees the chandelier in the Church, but does he know what it represents? He sees the candle stand where he places his candle, but does he know what it is and what it proclaims? It proclaims that one day he too must ascend into that heavenly assembly and stand beneath Christ the Pantocrator. And what is he doing to prepare for this?
I want to believe that, unless someone had a valid reason, no one failed to go to Church today. Everyone went to Church. But how many received Holy Communion? How many received? And those who did not, why did they not?
We should bring joy to Christ. Christ rejoices when you receive His Body and Blood. Why? Because your nature is changed, you become a prince, and He prepares you for the Kingdom. Without the Body and Blood of Christ, how can a person become a prince? How, then, are you preparing yourself, brother, if you have not become a prince? Yet you expect to be saved while refusing to receive Him. Everything is found there, within the life of the Church. There you will also find the words I am telling you. You will discover whom you are serving and what you are preparing yourself for. And, if you wish, you will change direction and do what is right. The purpose of man’s stay in this world is not merely to build houses, arrange marriages, or get married, without thereby rejecting these things in their proper place.
His purpose is to be able to enter the palace and prepare himself to stand among the princes of Heaven. You have seen what is portrayed in the church temple: the sun, the moon, the stars, Christ, the Theotokos, and the Saints. The domestic Church should reflect this: Christ as the Father, the Theotokos as the Mother, and the Saints as the children.
The home must become a domestic Church that leads its members toward the Kingdom above, so that they may acquire the dignity needed for that palace. “I gave nothing,” someone says, or, “I gave only a few coins,” while another says, “I gave millions.” Let them undertake all the works of this world. If those works do not give them a title to the Kingdom, they will not enter. A person’s works will remain merely his luggage.
Consider someone returning from abroad. What does he bring back? He may carry three hundred suitcases with him. Yet when he arrives at an apartment, even a penthouse with six or seven rooms, he still needs a bed on which to rest. So it is with people who do not know these details, which are set forth above all in the Evangelical Law. Even if you have performed works and your luggage is full of precious things and costly gifts for your relatives and friends, you still have not obtained a ticket. Thank you.
Let me put it the other way around: people with good works did not enter Paradise, while people without works, but with a ticket, did enter Paradise. Did the Pharisee have no works? Which of us, defiled as we are, could stand beside the works of the Pharisee? “I tithe; I fast twice a week; I am not an extortioner, an adulterer, or a thief.” Yet he was told, in effect: “Remain outside; you are of no use to Me.” His works did not move God and did not open the door. And the elder brother in the parable—although the father spoke to him—the Scripture does not say that he went inside.
But the tax collector cried, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner,” and he entered. The other said, “I have sinned against Heaven and before you.” The younger son confessed his sin, and he entered. “Change his garment, put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet, and prepare the feast.” This is the point. Measured by the standard of Christianity, Christianity is not merely a contract for doing good works. Someone behaves well and performs good works—but tell me whether he has a living relationship with Christ. If he does good works, help him also to be united with Christ, so that he may carry his works with him. Otherwise, his luggage travels without the ticket. And that ticket is issued in the Orthodox Church. No so-called church in the world issues tickets for Paradise.
The Orthodox and divine Church issues the tickets for Paradise, whether we like it or not. You can discern this even by a negative test, using a person possessed by a demon. If you wish to discover which faith belongs to Christ, which one He loves and wills, observe before what holy power the demons are driven away. Otherwise, you may go down to the decorated tombs of the founders of the various religions, where their dead founders lie hidden, and ask which of them can give light and freedom to the afflicted person. Only Christ can reveal where the true faith is.
I am telling you these things not to frighten you, but to impress their importance upon you. Be careful not to be carried away by some other misguided plan.
Remain within the Church and Her Mysteries, so that you may form a living bond with Christ. Stop relying on empty words and papers while having no true relationship with your Brother, Christ.
Where does the Apostle say that God is the Father of all people? Where did this false teaching come from? God is the Father of Christians, of those who have Christ as their Brother. The people of the world are not children of God, as even some of our educated people and theologians claim. No; they are His creatures and His creation. The children of God are those of whom Scripture says: “As many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” Those who have no organic, living relationship with Christ—not merely a theoretical one—are not His children. Merely believing that Christ exists is not enough; the devil also believes. Indeed, “the demons believe and tremble.” Someone may say, “I am a respectable woman; how could I ever blaspheme Christ?”
If you refuse to bear children, are you not blaspheming Christ? If God gave you hair and you cut it off in rejection of what He gave you, are you not blaspheming Christ? If He made you a woman and you make yourself into a man, are you not blaspheming Christ? Whom are you blaspheming—me? You blaspheme the All-Wise, the Almighty, the Provident, the Good One, your Savior. When I insist, “I want to do my own will,” I blaspheme Him. Whatever form that rebellion takes, it is He whom I blaspheme.
We must therefore pay attention to certain things, and Christ grants us additional time so that we may enter. We shall not enter by some other way. The Kingdom of Heaven is for Christians, and Christians are those who have an organic, living relationship with Christ. Take care to receive Holy Communion more frequently and deepen your divine communion with God. Why is it called divine communion? Because you come into contact with God; man enters into communion with God. And what happens? It is like a transfusion of royal blood into man: by grace he becomes a prince, and in this way he is prepared for the Kingdom. If Christ does not make men princes, how will they become princes fit for the Kingdom?
There was once a man living abroad who left behind many millions of dollars. There appeared to be no heirs. Then one day we read in the newspaper that the heirs of this man were being sought.
We must have Christ as our Brother and God as our Father by adoption. Those who have this relationship also have the Church as their Mother. Whoever does not have Christ as his Brother, God as his Father by adoption, and the Church as his Mother will remain outside the Kingdom. Our purpose is not to become gardeners in the Kingdom of Heaven, nor courtiers there. We must enter the Kingdom. We are not going there merely to sweep its floors; we are called to be princes, and Christ gives us the full right to become so. Therefore, do not burden and restrict yourselves excessively with material concerns, the flesh, self-interest, and all the rest. A satanic distraction is hidden in these things: as they multiply, they create ever more cares.
At first we did not have even one pair of trousers to wear. Then we acquired another pair for a change, and then another. We began to want one for the morning, then yet another, until twenty years passed and still we could not find a moment of peace. Or take another simple example. We had a small studio apartment, and after some time we thought we needed another room for guests, then a storage room, then some further addition. Each new thing brings another care, until it absorbs the person and draws him away from the spiritual life.
Once, in Patissia, there was a man living on the upper floor whose pride would not let him speak openly, though he wanted to meet me personally. One evening after the talk, he came upstairs and spoke with me. “Mr. Hilarion,” I told him—if I remember his name correctly—“there is nothing else for me to tell you beyond what you heard. Go to Holy Confession and return to Christ.” He said to me, “I want to break away from the things in which I have become entangled, but now I cannot.” He was bound by financial dealings, property, and the many complications surrounding his home. I remember this clearly. My beloved, many people today burden themselves with things that are not necessary, supposedly for their children, and these burdens shift the center of gravity away from our spiritual life. That is the problem.
Is a person ever satisfied with what he has in this world? You may have read the story of a man with a large family and a king. It comes to mind in connection with this, so I will tell it to you. Once, a king appeared in a neighborhood and saw a poor-looking house. He went inside, without the people knowing that he was the king. “How are you managing here?” he asked. “We are suffering. The children are growing up, and we cannot make ends meet.”
“Are you lazy, then? Why can you not make ends meet?” “No, I am not lazy. I go out and cast my nets, but I cannot catch anything. I cannot make ends meet. That is why we suffer and find ourselves in this condition.”
The king asked about his circumstances and said to him, “Listen: whatever fish you catch, bring them to the palace. I am the king. Mark well what I am telling you. Bring every fish you catch there; we shall weigh them, and I shall give you the corresponding weight in gold. In this way you will be able to provide for your family.” “Agreed, agreed. I shall begin tomorrow.” The man was overjoyed. He went out that very evening, prepared his nets, and cast them, hoping to gather as many fish as possible. Just imagine the great stretches over which he spread them, as we were saying earlier. Then he went...
But when he went the next day to haul in the nets, he pulled them up and looked. In all, he had caught only one fish—the kind they call an “eye-fish.”
“I do not want him to bring me bad luck. Please, why does he not present it, sir?” “He must present it, sir.” That day the matter came before the king. The king considered it, but nothing came of it. “We shall settle it,” he told him, “and we shall put this here,” but the matter would not go away. That day a shrewd, cunning man happened to pass by.
Theophoria, or whatever it was called, from Akrotomidia, and so forth. He heard what had happened to the king: that he had promised to give a corresponding weight in gold, and that there was a fish called an “eye-fish,” and so on. “I shall look into this matter,” he said. “I shall get him out of this difficulty.” So they summoned him to deal with it. “If they wish,” he said, “that is not the answer.”
Will he put an end to sinfulness? Why will he not put an end to sinfulness? He does not want to take it away. I am the one; I am the lord of the Ascension. He is the lord of immediate sinfulness and of sinfulness. If, then, we truly believe that He has destined us for the Kingdom of Heaven, we must change our lives. We must go to Church and receive Holy Communion regularly. There are, of course, certain obligations, duties between husband and wife, and other such things. Therefore, little by little at least, the rest of us must find a way to make this part of our daily life. Thank you.

Θα πάσαι πόσο λέει περί βασιλείας, τι να κάνεις αναφορικά για να γίνεις βασιλόπουλο. «Δεύτε να κληρονομήσετε τη Βασιλεία του Πατρός». Πού είναι τα έργα σας; Εάν δεν έχεις τίτλους να κληρονομήσεις τη Βασιλεία, τι είναι ο τρόπος που γίνεται βασιλόπουλο για να κληρονομεί τη Βασιλεία; Το ξέρει ο άνθρωπος; Κολακεύεται τουλάχιστον ταπεινά ότι προόρισε να ζήσει σε Βασιλεία μαζί με τον Βασιλέα, με τη Βασίλισσα την Παναγία και με τα πριγκιπόπουλα, τους Αγίους. Το πιστεύει αυτό; Βλέπει τον πολυέλαιο στην εκκλησία, ξέρει τι είναι ο πολυέλαιος; Βλέπει το μανάλι που βάζει το κερί του, ξέρει τι είναι αυτό και τι ομολογεί; Ότι αυτός μια μέρα πρέπει να ανεβεί στον πολυέλαιο και να είναι υπό τον Παντοκράτορα, τον Χριστό. Και τι κάνει σχετικώς;
Σας θέλω να πιστεύω, εκτός κανείς αν είχε λόγους ευλόγους, δεν πήγε σήμερα στην Εκκλησία. Όλοι πήγαν στην Εκκλησία. Πόσοι κοινώνησαν; Πόσοι κοινώνησαν; Και οι άλλοι που δεν κοινώνησαν, γιατί δεν κοινώνησαν;
Ανάγκη, λοιπόν, λέγω ορισμένα να τα προσέξουμε και ο Χριστός μας προσθέτει το χρόνο να μπορέσουμε να περάσουμε. Μην θα περάσουμε διαφορετικά. Η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών είναι για τους χριστιανούς και οι χριστιανοί είναι εκείνοι οι οποίοι έχουν οργανική σχέση με τον Χριστό. Φροντίστε να πυκνώσετε τη Θεία σας Κοινωνία, την Θεία σας επικοινωνία. Γιατί λέγεται Θεία; Διότι έρχεσαι σε επαφή με τον Θεό, επικοινωνεί ο άνθρωπος με τον Θεό. Και τι γίνεται; Γίνεται μια μετάγγιση αίματος βασιλέως προς τον άνθρωπο και γίνεται κατά χάρη βασιλόπουλο ο άνθρωπος, και έτσι πρόκειται η Βασιλεία. Εάν ο Χριστός δεν φτιάξει τα βασιλόπουλα, πώς θα γίνουν τα βασιλόπουλα για τη Βασιλεία, εφόσον πρόκειται η Βασιλεία;
