Summary

The Passover command to remove leaven prefigures the cleansing of sin required before partaking of Christ, the Lamb of God. Christ receives confessed sins, forgives the repentant, and restores the soul, while postponing repentance hardens the heart and risks death without reconciliation. The faithful should therefore cleanse the soul regularly through repentance and confession before approaching the new Passover of Holy Communion.

In our last talk, if I remember correctly, we spoke briefly about the subject of Passover. And since this subject, this matter of Passover, is timely...

Today I wanted to dwell on one particular point, one detail: the Jews were to eat the Passover not with leaven—that is, not with leavened bread. This was a special commandment, and failure to observe it was punishable by death. All dough had to be removed from every house—that is, all yeast, all leaven, as we call it. As Paul later explains, this commandment and this particular detail meant that the leaven was a type of sin. They therefore had to be unleavened, as we said, so that they might eat the Passover without fear and to their spiritual benefit. They were to eat that lamb and mark the doorposts of their homes with its blood. We, however, live after Christ; we are not living in 1450 BC, when the Passover was instituted.

We must therefore seek the practical meaning of this detail and this commandment. Even today, if a person wishes to eat the Passover we have been speaking about, he must understand the distinction we made: the Passover is not the lamb we customarily put on a spit and roast, and so forth. That is merely a Passover of the belly.

It has nothing to do with the human soul, the human spirit, or our salvation. As we explained, Passover means exodus; it means crossing over; it means passage. It certainly does not simply mean food. Yet we have altered it, as we have altered so many things, and made Passover into something concerned with our stomachs.

So, as I was saying, in order for them to eat the Passover, they had to be unleavened. They had to be free of that leaven—that is, free of sin. The very same thing applies to the new Passover, the Passover we now celebrate. If a person wishes to partake of this Lamb of God, he too must be unleavened; he must partake without sins. It cannot be otherwise. Just as the unbaptized person cannot sit at the table—that is, has no right to partake of the Lamb—so too the person who has stained his Baptism

has no right to sit at the table. You may know from your own observation, perhaps even from personal experience, what I am about to say. During these days of Pascha, or on other great Christian feasts such as Christmas and the Dormition of the Theotokos, you will have seen people who are entirely uninitiated—people who hardly know which door to use when entering or leaving the Church, when to come in, when to receive Holy Communion, or when to leave. You will have seen such people approach without attending to this important detail: a superficial fast on the eve of the feast, or on a Wednesday, or for two or three days, is not in itself enough to make someone worthy to sit at the table

and partake of this fatted calf, this Lamb of God, without the necessary spiritual preparation. Writing to the Corinthians, Paul says, “Let each person examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” A person must examine the condition in which he finds himself. Yes, after Baptism he was given this food, which is the Lamb. But in Baptism he was cleansed. What happened then? He renounced Satan and united himself to Christ; he spat upon Satan, made his confession of faith, and so forth. Yet when that person grew a little older—when he reached ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, or fifteen, and today even at eight or seven—the opposite happened. He denied Christ

and united himself once again to Satan. In other words, what he professed in order to receive the white garment of his soul in Baptism, he later denies when he reaches that age. Whether because of the world, ignorance, the flesh, or any one of a thousand other things, the person is drawn back into sin. Though he said that he would depart from Satan and never unite himself to him again, sadly he returns to the same path. God knew that human beings would sin even after Baptism, and so He established a second Baptism. The Mystery of metanoia—repentance—and Confession is called a second Baptism. Indeed, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the brother of Saint Basil the Great, says, “Even a single falling tear is equal to the baptismal washing.”

It is as though the person has been baptized anew, because we sin in three ways: in word, in deed, and in thought. A person sins with the nous, the spiritual intellect; he sins through his words and through his actions. These, then, are the three ways in which we sin. It is impossible for anyone to live without sinning, as our Church says so beautifully to Christ in the funeral service: “You alone, O Lord, are without sin.” The rest of us sin in word, deed, and thought. In his book, Job says, “How can a man born of woman be pure?” How can anyone remain pure before God at every moment, when God finds faults even in the moon and in the angels themselves?

How, then, could a human being be pure? Even if he lives for only one day upon the earth, Job says, he is sinful, for he drinks iniquity like water. And this is true. If we could wear a tiny tape recorder and a little television camera that worked together, recording us from the moment we awoke in the morning until we lay down again at night, and if afterward we could watch and listen to everything we had done that day, we would often be ashamed of ourselves. We would say, “Did we really occupy ourselves with such things? Did we really do that?” Yes, it was we who did those things. Yet they slip from our memory, and we imagine that purity consists of only two things: “I have not killed anyone, and I have not stolen anything.” Someone says, “I am so careful that I would not even harm an ant. I have never hurt anyone in my life, and my conscience is at rest.”

Could there be a greater delusion? No, there could not. Saint John the Theologian wrote in his epistle, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” It is impossible for a person to pass through life without becoming stained in some way. Life is like a coal yard. Could a person dressed in white—a bride, for example—walk through a coal yard without getting dirty? Even if her clothes are not smeared, they will certainly be spattered. It cannot be otherwise. How much more is this true of us, who are not even careful, because we have never concerned ourselves with the matter of sin. What does sin mean? What is it? How does it work? Where is it found? We have never given it any thought. Nor do we give thought to a germ we cannot see.

And yet an invisible germ can strike you down, lay you out straight as a cypress tree, and send you to the grave before anyone can even detect it. How much more serious, then, is sin. But, as I was saying, Christ has provided beforehand for this human weakness. This is why He tells us, “Whenever you fall, rise again and you shall be saved.” You fell; you are human. And there are countless ways in which a person may fall. Someone may push you; you may slip; you may fail to notice something; or you may not know something. In any case, it happened. How often do we repent of something we have done? Very often. In exactly the same way, a person must repent of his spiritual falls and take care, during the time given to him in this world

to set these matters in order. For, as you know—though I do not know whether you wish to believe it—we will be called to account not only for our deeds, but even for idle and needless words, for having given our nous and our tongue over to useless things. Our time is measured. Its boundaries have been set so precisely that there is none to spare. We may imagine that we have time to spare, but that changes nothing. Tomorrow? Who told you that you will still be here tomorrow? Who told you? Do you hold anything in your hand? Do you have a signed promise or any guarantee? Who told you? We depart in a fraction of a second. If a person truly believes that he is like a migratory bird, coming and remaining for a while, like the swallow, and then flying away toward the warmth of southern lands, he will live differently.

A human being is only a tenant upon the earth, and one day he will be served notice of eviction—at an unexpected hour, for most people are caught unprepared when they depart from this world. That we will depart is one hundred percent certain. If we keep in mind the uncertainty of our stay here, we must always be concerned with settling these accounts. I would never, ever want anyone to believe that God is only good. This is what Satan has managed to serve up to the world: that God is love, that God is good. Who said that God is not good? Yes, He is good; He is love. But God is also just. How can you take away

and erase this attribute which belongs to God in its fullness—His justice—when He also exhorts mankind, “Learn righteousness, you who dwell upon the earth”? This righteous Judge, then, will require righteousness. God has two legs, my dear ones. He is not lame, as some people portray Him. He does not have only one leg

—goodness. He is also just. On this side of the grave, He is good, forbearing, and forgiving. Beyond the grave, Christ is the One “who, as immortal King, has authority over both the dead and the living.” He holds both in His hands. Therefore, if a person does not make good use of God’s patience and kindness in this world, he will inevitably encounter His justice—His other hand—in the world to come. Christ told that beautiful Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. You will remember it even from your schooldays. Lazarus lived his life, and the rich man lived his own, indifferent and hardhearted toward everyone. He left Lazarus with no companion but the dog that licked his wounds. But when the rich man died, the justice of God took hold of him. Things went badly for him there, and only then did he ask for mercy. He was told, “There is no mercy to be had now. You received your good things in your lifetime, and here you receive the bitter things. Lazarus received his bitter things there, and now he receives the good things here.” God is just. Let us never lose sight of that. So, on the one hand, there is uncertainty: I do not know whether I will have time. I say that I will—but will I? And secondly, there is something else:

hardening. When a person remains in sin and postpones setting things right, he does nothing but harden his soul, until tomorrow, even if he wishes to desire repentance, he will no longer be able to. Satan will not let him. He accustoms the person to a certain condition, and the person keeps postponing. Satan steals today from him and promises him tomorrow: “Leave it until tomorrow.” And when tomorrow becomes today, he puts it off yet again. In this way, even when reason finally demands that the person act, he is unable to do so. He has become hardened. And this is the most serious danger: that the human heart should become hardened. It becomes like a well-trodden road on which nothing can grow. Do you remember what Christ said in the Parable of the Sower? Some seed, He says, fell upon ground

that was not good soil, but was like a road. When a road is continually trodden down, you can scatter anything you like upon it, but nothing will grow. The seed will remain on the surface, and the birds of the air will eat it. When Satan enters the human heart, when sin enters it, the heart begins to harden. Reverence disappears. The fear of God disappears. A person becomes indifferent to his soul and to everything else. This is why he must not let sin remain even for a moment. Before a person has entered into sin, he feels shame and blushes. You see him turn as red as a rose at once, whether he is a boy or a girl. But once he enters into sin, he becomes so hardened that you begin to feel ashamed on his behalf. Blind people, as you know, have their own form of writing.

They read with their hands; they turn the pages, find their place, chant, and so forth. The one thing they fear, lest they lose this contact with the book and with the art of chanting, is that the tips of their fingers may become calloused and hard. If they harden, they lose their sensitivity; their sense of touch no longer helps them, and they become lost in their literal darkness. The same happens to a person who enters into sin. That is why sins must be cast away little by little and cleansed away little by little.

We do not leave our hands, face, body, teeth, and mouth unwashed, saying, “Oh, we will wash them in a month, or in two months, or in five years.” We do not do that. We wash them daily and take care to keep them clean, so that the pores remain open, the body can breathe naturally through the skin, and all the other processes that support the body can function properly.

The same is true of the soul. It is difficult, because in people who have gone years without Confession, Satan has formed a hard crust over it, and that crust must be broken. It takes courage to say, “I will break through it.” Then a person will understand what Christ, in His love, has left to us, knowing that we would sin. David knew this from experience, for he underwent terrible trials: though a king and a prophet, he fell into adultery and murder. In one of his Psalms he writes, “You remembered, O Lord, that we are dust.” We are made of earth. What do You expect? That we will do everything well? That we will never make a mistake?

That we will never sin? That we will never be carried away by the world, by the flesh, or by self-interest, or be deceived by Satan? What do You expect? “We are dust. You remembered, O Lord, that we are dust,” and You have dealt with us accordingly. And truly, this is how He has dealt with us. He never condemns the person who falls. He never says, “You wretched boy, you wretched girl, you miserable person—why did you fall?” He never asked anyone why they fell. He asks only one thing: “Do you want to get up? That is what matters to Me. I do not ask for your money, your work, your wife, your child, or your husband. I ask for nothing of that kind. Give Me your sins—whatever is rotten in you, whatever is stained, give it to Me.” Many are astonished at this, because no one normally gathers up filthy things. People gather things that have value—gold,

possessions, and things like that. They say there is no profit in anything else, for people are always moved by self-interest, even when they merely say good morning. But here the opposite happens. Christ says, “Whatever good you have, keep it. Give Me whatever is ugly in you. Whatever mistake you made, whatever evil you committed, give that to Me.” It is a strange thing, beyond human understanding. And what will God do with these things? Ask what money is made from. Go to Aspiotis-ELKA and ask, “What kind of paper do you use to make banknotes?” It is made from rags—rags from filthy things. The thousand-drachma note, the five-thousand-drachma note: man takes a rag and turns it into something valuable. God does the same. He makes use of these things, transforms them, wipes them away, and leaves the person clean and whole.

Sadly, the person—for reasons I do not know, whether ignorance, indifference, or hardness of heart—does not want to make use of this. Every day he falls further into debt before God, yet God does not summon him to demand payment, as the grocer might say, “Tell your father to come and pay, or I will cut off his credit and send him notice,” and likewise the greengrocer, the fishmonger, or the doctor. Christ does not demand settlement of the account. He wants the person to come and reckon with Him so that He may forgive the whole debt. Another creditor says, “Tell your father to come and settle the account and pay. If he cannot pay it all at once, then he must at least pay it little by little.” But Christ says, “Come, let us settle the account. Admit that, being human, you have fallen into debt, and I will forgive it all.” Yet the person does not go. That is our mistake.

Some people learned from childhood, or through various circumstances, that there is a way to give rest both to their soul and to their body. I do not know whether you have ever had a Turkish bath. You have all taken an ordinary bath, of course, but a Turkish bath is something else. It soothes the whole body, and you come out feeling as light as a feather. What happens to the soul is many times greater. Otherwise, a person feels heavy and burdened. He may go and speak to a kind of psychiatrist—not a secular psychiatrist, but a priestly one who wears an epitrachelion, the priestly stole. As we said here in another talk, a secular psychiatrist certainly listens, and the person who is in pain, sorrowful, and burdened with problems receives some relief.

He receives relief in his soul, but only temporarily. He feels like someone who took an aspirin: the pain lessened a little, but its cause remained untouched. When he enters the bathhouse called the confessional, through metanoia and Confession, he becomes a new person—a new person. He feels light. His spiritual vision opens, he sees clearly, and he says, “Where was I? How could things have been this way?” It is said that once an innkeeper went to a monastery for Confession. He mounted a horse, rode to the monastery, tied the horse outside, and went in. An hour later he came out and mounted the horse to leave. As he climbed back into the saddle, he said to his gray horse, “Now, my gray friend, you can certainly carry me.”

He felt one hundred and fifty okas lighter. That is how heavy he felt when he went in, and how light when he came out. Do not be surprised; do not think this strange. The things I am telling you endure beyond the grave. Everything else in this world may be good and useful for our temporary life here, and that is well and good. But these things endure beyond the grave. You will remember my words if you ever make use of this free gift God has left here, this free passage He has provided for every person. If you use this great advantage, you will never regret it. As the saying goes, “No one ever regretted having repented.”

Everyone, however, has regretted not repenting—but then it is too late. Another saying tells us: if a person dies before he dies, he will not die when he dies. But if he does not die before he dies, then he will die when he dies. A person does not want to die to his ego. He trusts his own knowledge and learning, sets everything else aside, cannot see beyond himself, and refuses to die to his own will here so that he may have no fear of death afterward. Then, when he dies, he truly dies, both bodily and spiritually. In His love, then, God has left us this Mystery of Mysteries. Had this Mystery not existed, none of the living could be saved, as the Saints say.

For there has never been a person who did not sin. Even Abraham sinned. Who has not sinned? Everyone has sinned, some a little and others greatly. But metanoia, repentance, is a key in our hands by which we can set every matter right, if we are willing, whenever we are willing. There is no fixed time when we must say, “I must wait until then.” The moment a person cries out, “Lord, help me,” Christ is ready to stretch out His hand, just as He stretched it out to Peter when he was sinking. But the person delays because he listens to Satan, who, as I said earlier, steals the present and promises the future. “Tomorrow,” he says. “You are still young. Why begin now? Go and do it once more.” And what comes of this? Many people intended to repent, but they never lived to do so.

You know what happened in Athens. Two friends were going to Chrysopiliotissa for Confession. One of them turned aside and went badly astray. On his way to confess, he stopped at a house of corruption. His friend waited for him at their meeting place, but he did not come. He had gone. He was gone. “What happened?” His friend telephoned his house, and his mother answered. “What happened to George?” he asked. “He left quite some time ago,” she said. “But we had an appointment, and he never came.” What had happened? Where he went, his bowels were spilled out: another man stabbed him inside that house of corruption. What had the devil whispered in his ear? “Go and commit this sin, since you are going to confess it afterward.” When a person schemes in this calculating way,

when he handles the matters of eternity and of his soul with ulterior motives, he will pay for it even here in this world. He will lose not only the world to come, but this world as well. Since these days offer an opportunity, and many people approach Holy Communion either from custom or from a sense of obligation, let us remember that this preparation must come first. For all of us sin in word, deed, and thought. Many have gone years without even saying good morning to someone. Many have no relationship with their parents. Many have behaved badly in all kinds of situations. Because they were not punished, or because no one has yet called them to account, they imagine that these things have been erased or that the statute of limitations has expired. But sins are the one thing for which the statute of limitations never expires.

Even human law provides that a worker’s right to his wages never expires. Other claims expire after five or ten years—I do not know exactly how many—and copyright expires after fifty years. But wages do not expire: if you worked for your daily pay, human law never cancels your claim to it. Something similar applies here. Does it not strike you that when John the Baptist came, he went out preaching, and what did he say? “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand”? Does it not strike you that when Christ began His public ministry, taking up where John the Baptist had left off,

He said the same thing: “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand, and believe in the Gospel.” He added just a few words: believe in Me—that is, believe in the Gospel. For Christ Himself is the Gospel.

Did You have nothing else to tell us? John had already told us this. When a person is dying, ask him what he would say. Does he know? “Through repentance, I too have found the way.” If a person is to return and go back to the place from which he came, he must follow the path of repentance. Every evening at Vespers, the priest says a secret prayer over the Holy Table. Among other things, he says, “Receive him in repentance and confession.” In other words, if one of us leaves the Church tonight and departs this life, the prayer asks, “I beseech You, receive him in repentance and confession.” That is what matters. Why does it ask for repentance and not for works? Because we are descendants of Adam and Eve, who remained unrepentant. Many do not know why Adam and Eve were driven out. They think they were driven out because of sin alone.

They were driven out not only because of sin, but also because of their refusal to repent. God gave them every opportunity and every right to recognize their failure: they had not become gods; they felt their nakedness; they began to be ashamed; they became afraid and hid. They had every opportunity to repent, but they did not. Their expulsion, therefore, had two causes: sin—namely, disobedience—and unrepentance. Indeed, they shifted the blame: Adam blamed the woman, the woman blamed the serpent, and both blamed God. Exactly the same thing happens today. Everyone is at fault except us. Our father is at fault, our mother is at fault, the Church is at fault, the headmistress is at fault, the government is at fault, foreign powers are at fault, domestic forces are at fault, Ecevit is at fault—everyone is at fault. Only we are not. And yet it is we who are at fault.

That is where a person must begin, recognizing that he is a descendant of Adam and Eve. Take a very small child, one who has only just learned to say “Grandpa” and “Grandma,” and ask, “Why did you do that?” At once he will say, “I did not do it.” “Who did?” “Grandpa did it.” He immediately shifts the blame. He is a little disciple of Adam and Eve; you can see it plainly. There is no need to travel abroad, gather monkeys, and ask where we came from: “Are you my father?” “I am your father,” and then bow down before it. Such things are ridiculous. Just take a small child, and he will tell you exactly where you come from. This tendency, then, has been planted in us from the foundation of the world. That king and prophet sinned. And it is no small thing to be a king, an educated man.

She was bathing; the devil whispered in David’s ear, and David sent the woman’s husband away, had him killed, and took his wife. But he repented of this. When God saw that he had fallen, He sent him the Prophet Nathan. One prophet approached another and set before him a simple, practical case in order to help him. He said, “O King, I know that you are an intelligent man, and I have come upon a difficult matter. Help me. A very rich man, who could have prepared a feast from his own flocks, went and took the ewe lamb—the little sheep—of a poor man for his celebration and enjoyment. Though he was very rich, he did not use one of his own animals,

though he certainly could have. What should be done to this man?” David said, “That man deserves to die.” Nathan replied, “He did such a thing? You are that man, O King. You took the wife of the poor man, Uriah the officer, although as king you could have had five hundred wives.” What did David say? “I have sinned against the Lord.” That was all. He did not make excuses, ask who had reported it, or tell Nathan to be careful. Nothing of the kind. “I have sinned against the Lord. Yes, I did it.” Nathan then answered, “The Lord also has put away your sin.” Since you admit that you did it, God wipes it away. “He has put away your sin.” What happened here? One prophet heard the confession of another prophet and spoke on God’s behalf. Nathan did not say, “I put away your sin.” I want you to remember this, because many people, unfortunately,

never come to Confession because priests are sinners, or because priests have things in their past. That is a grave mistake; keep this in mind. Nathan said, “The Lord has put away your sin,” not “I have.” He also gave David a canon, a rule of repentance: the child conceived with Bathsheba outside lawful union would die. Although David himself was forgiven, that fruit of lawlessness would die so that God would not be blasphemed, with people saying, “This is the illegitimate child of the king and prophet.” The child would be taken away so that God’s name would not be blasphemed, for it was the fruit of lawlessness. From this we see that in Paradise God asked man to repent and set the matter right there. But man refused and instead accused God: “Did You not give me this woman? You should have made her better, so that she would not deceive me.”

“Did You not make the serpent? You should have made it more innocent, so that it would not deceive me.” In other words: “You are not at fault; I am at fault for having made them? Thank you very much—out you go.” And God cast them both out and closed Paradise to them. What does He ask of us now? The very thing they failed to offer then. Do you want to return? When eight hands and eight feet carry you to burial and they chant, “Blessed is the way in which you walk today,” do you want to be restored to the place from which you came? Then, by a corresponding remedy, you must do what they failed to do. Through sin and unrepentance came expulsion; through sinlessness or repentance—their opposites—comes the return. There is no other way. Sins are either paid for or forgiven. Many people, deceived by the evil one, do not

Many people do not go to confess their sins. Or, if they do confess them, they do it in their own way. If a particular illness requires a particular prescription, but you follow a different one, will you get results? No, you will not. Not only will you fail to be healed and restored to health, but you will also suffer harmful consequences. It is exactly the same here. Some people say, “I said, ‘My God, forgive me,’ and God forgives.” Does God not forgive? Does Christ forgive? I do not forgive.

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” On the very day Christ rose, that evening, in His sixth formal appearance, while the doors of the upper room were shut, He stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

He breathed upon the eleven, into their faces, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Does Christ not forgive? People say, “Forgive me, my Most Holy Theotokos.” The Most Holy Theotokos does not forgive sins. “Forgive me, my Saint George; forgive me, my Saint John.” The Saints do not forgive sins. The priest forgives sins. Christ sent him to act on His behalf. This is not because of the priest’s holiness—no. When he places the epitrachelion over you and raises his hands, the priest says this in the prayer of absolution: “You, O Lord, who said, ‘Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed,’ loose also this Your servant.” You, O Lord—not I. The priest himself may be sinful. We may know one side of his life, while he has another life of which we know nothing. That is not the point.

The priest is simply an instrument in the Lord’s hands. Therefore, if we so choose, let us cast aside the alternatives Satan suggests. I tell you, suppose none of this is true and we are merely wasting our time. But if even one billionth of it is true, what then? You do not want to believe? Then do not. The choice is yours. The soul is yours; God gave it to you and tells you to love it. Do you not want to live with God in eternity? Do you want to live your life here in some other way and remain indifferent? Then remain indifferent; it is in your hands. But know that one day He will bring you to judgment. If you could somehow avoid departing this life, never pass beyond the grave, and remain here, then by all means do so. But since neither you nor I can remain here, and we will be carried away whether we wish it or not, matters are rather different. Moreover, we Orthodox have

the testimony of miracles through the Saints, through the Theotokos, and so forth, by which we see that something lies beyond this life. The other day, a woman took some basil from the Cross and telephoned me. “Come, Mr. Panagiotis! A miracle has happened—a miracle!” I said, “I believe in miracles; I do not need to see one.” Miracles are unnecessary for believers. She said, “I took basil from the Cross, along with a little rosemary and other things, put some flour in a bowl, prepared it, and it became leaven. It has even overflowed the bowl. You, who are skeptical, should come and see it!” I know about this; it is no profound mystery. Take water over which even a sinful priest has read the prayer—it never spoils. I know this. I do not need to travel to Kypseli to see it, though she regards it as something great. We have miracles in our very hands; they are plainly visible. We have the opportunity to touch the Lord’s side. What is Saint Gerasimos? A part of the Lord’s side remains there. Let science go and examine it. It cannot provide an answer.

What is Saint Spyridon? A permanent, unmistakable miracle. Saint John the Russian, so many other Saints, and all the rest—miracles. At Malevi, myrrh flows. What is that? How will you explain these things? Bring your science down here; lay out your books. Nothing. Set them aside. Everyone is powerless before such things. We have miracles. Through knowledge and through our own senses, God presses us and compels us to believe. Do I wish to reject them? Put your finger into the print of the nails, and do not become unbelieving. He has left signs here today for the modern Thomases, for those who find it difficult to believe. Thomas was not an unbeliever; he was slow to believe. That is precisely why Christ told him, “Do not become unbelieving, but believing.”

So let me return to this point and emphasize it. I do not know how you are approaching these holy days. I do not know how each of you lives.

That is a matter between God and each person. But I have a duty to remind you that there is a way to settle our accounts with God. It is free, without payment, and without hardship; all that is required is a right disposition and humility. In truth, a person ought to guard either against his sin or against mishandling his metanoia—his repentance. In other words, he should be ashamed when he is about to sin, but not ashamed after he has sinned and is about to repent. What does Satan do? He reverses the two. When it comes to sin, he instills shamelessness and indifference.

He makes sin seem like an ordinary way of life. But when it comes to repentance, he brings shame: “Am I really going to tell these things to the priest?” Yet the person tells them to his girlfriend and to his friends. He tells them within a small circle and even before a large one. But Satan forbids him to tell the priest. For when the things in our lives are told to other people who bear no responsibility and have neither this command nor this office, those sins multiply; they do not die. One person hears, others learn of them, some imitate them, and the sin multiplies. But if a person tells them to the priest who possesses the authority—not power, but authority, for he is merely an instrument, perhaps even like a rusty wire through which the current nevertheless passes—then those sins are put to death and destroyed. That is why Satan always leaves no stone unturned. Through shame, fear, and a thousand other devices, he makes a person postpone, keeps him from reaching confession, or ensures that even if he does arrive, he still remains under Satan’s control. He allows the person to go and receive Holy Communion.

Indeed, he is quite content for the person to go, because he is certain that he will still have him in his grasp. Many criticize the clergy for being uneducated, for being this or that. But this is not a matter of education. The priest holds a book and reads a prayer. The learned and the unlearned priest read the same words. He possesses nothing of himself. His learning can contribute nothing to the absolution. What he has is the right and the authority to bind and to loose—nothing more. You may not even seek his advice. You may consult someone else. Many people have two guides: the priest to whom they confess and another spiritual person whom they consult. For a so-called spiritual father may not be spiritual at all. He may have no experience of the problems of life and may be unable to guide people properly.

I will go and tell the priest my sins—that I did this, that, and the other—because he has the authority, through the epitrachelion, to absolve me of them. But I may discuss my concern, my particular problem, with someone else who has experience. I may discuss it with an experienced woman, a young woman, a young man, or an older man—people who are illumined and have advanced in the spiritual life. If, of course, the clergyman who is called a spiritual father fulfills both roles—if he has experience of life, is truly spiritual, and also possesses the authority—then that is ideal. But if no such priest is available, I will not say, “I refuse to go to this spiritual father.” I will go to confess my sins: that I stole, committed fornication, entertained sinful logismoi—intrusive thoughts—did this or that, blasphemed, or whatever other sins I may have committed. I will go. But I will seek counsel from someone else—from a person of experience and discernment. A particular spiritual father often does not possess both gifts and therefore cannot also give suitable counsel on the matter.

Discernment is greater than education—far greater. Discernment is spiritual, and Christ grants it. You will not find discernment at a university. You may learn a profession and many other things there, but not discernment. Another person may say a single word that opens your understanding, though he has never attended school at all. Yet he knows how to say, “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner,” in the car, on the road, and wherever he may be. Christ illumines him, and he helps people who need support. Have you never come to a crossroads in your life, when everything before you seemed dark, and then approached someone—or God brought someone to you—and after you explained your problem, that person gave you a fitting answer? Immediately another road opened before you, and you saw that the road with which Satan had blocked everything was not the only one, but that another road also existed.

At once you took courage, followed that road, and came out into a place of rest. This is exactly what happens in these cases. A person must therefore know that no one outside the clergy forgives sins—not even Christ Himself directly. You know how it is. Suppose I have a check in my pocket. If I go to the bank and approach the manager, I will say, “Mr. Manager.” Do you know what he will do? He will direct me to the appropriate employee. “But I understand that you are also a shareholder.” “Yes, I am a shareholder and so forth, but you must go there, and from there to the cashier to receive the money.” “But I want it from you.” He will take me by the ears and throw me out. “You must go there. I am the one in charge, I sign the authorization, and the employee acts on my behalf—but you must go there.” This is what Christ says. When He healed the ten lepers,

leprosy being a type—a foreshadowing—of sin in the Old Testament, where did He send them? “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” Why? Physicians gave their judgment on every other illness, but the clergy gave judgment on leprosy, because leprosy is a type of sin. God had entrusted this judgment to the clergy. They would issue the declaration permitting a person to associate freely with others, deciding whether he could live within the city among the people.

Is there, then, some other way outside this one? Whether the priest is handsome or plain, young or elderly, educated or uneducated, he has received the command and possesses the authority. No one else does. As for all the other sins—whether we confessed them to the stormy sea, dashed them against a stone as some say, told them to our master Saint George or to the Most Holy Theotokos, or even told them directly to Christ—we will find every one of them still hanging upon us after death. Not one will have departed. Only the sins confessed in Holy Confession will depart.

My dear friends, this is a matter of obedience. As I have told you before, Satan brings shame, in addition to the arguments he plants in the mind: “How can this be? The priest is not even educated,” and so on. Then he brings shame—the very one who first takes away our shame so that we will sin and commit deeds we are ashamed even to think about afterward. We confiscated a foreign magazine from a second-year secondary-school student. Sadly, I had recently seen the same magazine in the hands of some Japanese students boarding in Paris when I was returning from abroad. If you saw what that magazine contains—a magazine also sold here in Athens, on which young people, grown men, and others are feeding—you would be horrified. You would be ashamed to belong to the human race. Its contents are unspeakable.

Neither dogs nor any other animals do what is depicted in that magazine, yet human beings do such things without any reason at all. But when a person lives far from God, he loses his bearings. He has no direction, and nothing satisfies him. You see wealthy shipowners’ wives living on drugs, their lives disfigured. They do not have Christ, and all their money cannot give them joy, because Christ alone fills the human soul. They have psychiatrists but no spiritual father, and they seek joy in the underworld of crime and corruption. Where can they find joy there? Christ alone gives joy, and you will feel it immediately. You will experience it in both your spiritual and bodily life when you come out of Holy Confession.

Is there anyone who will never sin? Yet Christ condescends to us and says, “Whatever you have done is gone; I wipe it all away. From now on, begin a new life.” Have you fallen again? Rise again. Have you fallen once more? Rise once more. Sadly, after a person commits such deeds, he wonders, “How can I possibly go and tell what I have done?” But it is the devil who causes this. How can the person go and say it? The devil deceives him. First, I repeat, he takes away his shame; now he gives it back. An elder who heard confessions once saw this happening. A crowd was waiting outside. At one point he left the person whose confession he was hearing, went outside, and spoke to someone. I have told you this story before, but because it is relevant, I shall repeat it; forgive me. The elder saw a tall gentleman standing among the people and handing something out. “Why are you here? What do you want?” he asked him. The people could see no one. “What is the priest talking about?” they wondered. “You there,” the priest said, “the tall one—what do you want here?”

They looked at one another, thinking that something had happened to the priest. “In the name of the crucified Jesus Christ, what do you want here?” Then they saw a tall figure. They looked at one another again, realizing that someone had been standing among them whom they could not see before. The figure stood with his head bowed. “What are you? What are you doing? Tell us why you came here.” “I am Satan.” “Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos preserve us!” the others cried. “Satan is here!” And where else would Satan go? He goes to the priest’s very door, seeking to turn you back. “What are you doing here?” “I came to give something back.” “What are you giving back?” “Something I had taken.” “What had you taken?” “I had taken away their shame.” “Why?” “So that they would sin.” “And what are you doing now?” “Now I have brought it back to them.” “Why?” “So that they will be ashamed to tell you their sins and will remain mine.” That was his answer, and that is the truth. If a person sincerely considers what I am telling you, he will see that this is the truth. There is no other way. Therefore, once this leaven—this bitterness—is removed from our midst,

the person can at last be restored and becomes a new human being. Consider how a garment is washed. When my wife takes my shirt from the laundry basket to wash it, she does not begin by rinsing it. First she puts it into the washing machine and soaps it; only afterward does she rinse it. Metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession are the soaping, and Holy Communion is the rinsing. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin. All other blood, whether human or animal, stains; the blood of Christ cleanses. That is the wondrous thing. But this is the blood of God. That is the point. Therefore, when a person receives this medicine of immortality properly, all will be well.

It will have the proper results. You may be given the most perfect medicine, truly second to none. But if you do not take it according to the prescription—if you are told to take three doses a day and you take only one, or if you are told to take one dose a day and instead tip up the bottle and drink it all at once—what will the results be? It is exactly the same with spiritual matters. In spiritual matters, a person must follow precisely what God has prescribed. There is no other way. I accept that you will fall, but I give you the right to rise again. John Chrysostom puts it beautifully: “To fall,” he says, “is human; to persist in the fall is the law of Satan.” People do not know what sins are. Some time ago I had the opportunity to write a book entitled The Great Mystery of Repentance and Confession,

in which I included a list of six hundred sins. “But I have not killed anyone; I have not stolen anything.” Six hundred sins—and even that list certainly does not exhaust the subject. Therefore, if you believe these words have some place in these holy days through which we are now passing and which lie ahead of us, then take a practical and proper approach to repentance and confession. That is all for today.

Ακριβώς έτσι είναι και η ψυχή. Είναι δύσκολο πράγμα, διότι ο σατανάς στους ανθρώπους που έχουν χρόνια να εξομολογηθούν έχει δημιουργήσει επάνω μια κόρα, ένα σκληρό πράγμα, και χρειάζεται αυτή η κρούστα να σπάσει. Μια παλικαριά, όπως θα λέγαμε: «Θα τη σπάσω». Και τότε θα νιώσει ο άνθρωπος τι είναι αυτό το οποίο, εν τη αγάπη του, έχει αφήσει ο Χριστός στους ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι ήξερε ότι θα αμαρτάνουν. Ο Δαβίδ μάλιστα, ο οποίος είναι ένας έμπειρος, γιατί έπαθε μεγάλες λαχτάρες, έπεσε σε μοιχεία και σε φόνο, ένας βασιλιάς και προφήτης, έχει γράψει σε έναν ψαλμό του το εξής: «Εμνήσθης, Κύριε», του λέγει, «ότι χους εσμέν». Χώμα είμαστε. Τι περιμένεις; Να τα κάνουμε όλα καλά; Να μην κάνουμε λάθος;

Υπάρχει και ανθρώπινος ένας νόμος ο οποίος δεν παραγράφει ποτέ τα εργατικά δικαιώματα. Άλλες υποθέσεις μετά 5 χρόνια, 10 χρόνια, δεν ξέρω πόσο, συγγραφικά δικαιώματα μετά 50 χρόνια παραγράφονται. Αυτά όμως, εργατικά, εργάστηκες το μεροκάματό σου, δεν το παραγράφει ο ανθρώπινος νόμος ποτέ. Κάτι παρόμοιο γίνεται και στην περίπτωση αυτή. Δεν σας κάνει αίσθηση ότι, όταν ήρθε ο Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος, εβγήκε και κήρυξε και τι είπε; «Μετανοείτε· ήγγικε γαρ η Βασιλεία των Ουρανών». Δεν σας κάνει αίσθηση όταν ήρθε ο Χριστός και βγήκε στο δημόσιο βίο, στο ποδάρι, όπως θα λέγαμε, του Ιωάννου του Προδρόμου;

Παραπάνω από τη μόρφωση, τη μόρφωση, είναι η διάκριση. Και η διάκριση είναι πνευματική, τη δίδει ο Χριστός. Δεν θα βρεις στο Πανεπιστήμιο τη διάκριση. Μπορεί να μάθεις τέχνη, πολλά πράγματα μπορεί να μάθεις εκεί. Αλλά τη διάκριση όχι. Ο άλλος θα σου πει μια λέξη και θα ανοίξει το πνεύμα σου, ο οποίος δεν έχει πάει καθόλου σχολειό, αλλά ξέρει να λέει «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, ελέησέ με τον αμαρτωλόν», στο αυτοκίνητο, στο δρόμο κλπ., και τον φωτίζει και βοηθάει τους ανθρώπους που έχουν ανάγκη από στήριγμα. Δεν έτυχε ποτέ στη ζωή σας να τύχετε σε σταυροδρόμι και να σας έρθουν όλα μπροστά σας μαύρα, και πλησιάσατε κάποιον ή ο Θεός σάς έφερε κάποιον, και μιλήσατε το θέμα σας και σας έδωσε μια ανάλογη απάντηση, και αμέσως διηνοίγη ένας άλλος δρόμος μπροστά σας και είδατε ότι δεν είναι μόνον αυτός ο δρόμος που έκλεισε ο σατανάς την υπόθεση, αλλά είναι και άλλος δρόμος;
