Summary
Christ’s Incarnation and saving work through the Orthodox Church are presented as the destruction of Satan’s works and the liberation of humanity. The third trap corrupts genuinely good works through praise, pride, self-congratulation, and condemnation of those who seem less virtuous. Members of the Church share responsibility for those who remain ignorant of Christ and must offer themselves, their families, and their gifts in humble service instead of merely criticizing the clergy.

You will remember that in our previous talk we asked whether anyone else exists besides man and God. We found that there is indeed a third party, about whom Christians unfortunately know very little. This third party is Satan. When a person knows nothing about Satan, he knows nothing about Christianity either, and the whole sacrifice of Jesus cannot touch his heart.
The whole purpose of the Incarnation was nothing other than to destroy the works of Satan. The same is true of the continuing work of Jesus, for Christ has not finished His work; through His Orthodox Church, He continues His work for the salvation of every generation to come. All this work within the Orthodox Church would have no meaning if this third person did not exist. We spoke about him as much as we could—from Holy Scripture, from the life of the Church, and from the Church Fathers. And I want to believe that those who listened attentively left with the conviction that this third person truly exists and that man must...
...learn about him and about his movements. Above all, he must learn that Satan is a person. He is not merely a negative force, but a person who attacks and defends, who acts with deceit, and who has at least 7,500 years of experience. This is the person who works day after day to undermine man. He has many different ways, methods, and cunning devices, and he sets various traps in order to capture him. He does not become discouraged. He persists. He may remain beside a person for years...
...working to bring about his fall. Satan is the one who sows now so that he may reap a hundred years later. He knows what he is doing. That is why we must always fear him. As I told you, we read in the Life of Saint Anthony the Great that an angel already held Anthony’s soul in his hands and was departing when Satan said to him, “You have escaped me, Anthony.” Saint Anthony the Great answered, “Not yet.” That was how greatly he feared Satan. We, by contrast, do not even take him into account. And as I told you, not only that, but we actually wish for his kingdom to grow by telling everyone to go to the devil—often even those dearest to us, and over the most trivial matters.
Saint John Climacus, one of the Fathers of nepsis, or watchfulness—and I want you to know that all these Fathers are true masters of such matters, because they did not merely struggle against some grandson or great-grandson of Satan; in their own lives they fought Beelzebul himself—offers a fine teaching drawn from his experience, which I now call upon and pass on to you. It concerns the traps of Satan: “The demons dig three pits for us”—three trenches, three traps, like the pits used to catch wild beasts. “The demons dig them”; in simpler language, they open three holes before us.
“First, they struggle to prevent the good from being done.” Their first concern, he says, is not to allow a person to do good. This is a great trap. They offer him another way out: that the Church is unnecessary, for example; that the clergy are unnecessary; that the Mysteries are unnecessary; that works of charity are unnecessary; that nothing is required; that there is no life beyond the grave. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” This is a trap Satan sets to catch a person, and many fall into it and remain imprisoned there. You understand what awaits the lion, the king of the wilderness, once it falls into a pit and is caught.
“They struggle to prevent the good from being done”—to stop people from doing what is good and right. Satan sets such a trap. Some escape it, but for those who are not held there, he places another trap farther down the road. When he is defeated in the first trap and fails to catch us there, his second aim is “that the deed may not be done according to God.” He allows a person to act, but wants him to act according to his own ideas and in his own way—not as God says, not as the Gospel says, and not as the Fathers say. You have often heard people say, “I believe in a higher power.” Or, “Of course I believe in a higher being.” “Yes, I believe in God.” “Yes, I believe in Christ.”
But how do you believe in Christ? As a reformer, a mere man, an intelligent teacher? The question is not how you imagine Him to be; the question is who He truly is. The right faith is to believe in Him as Jesus, the crucified Nazarene. Believing in Him merely in your own way is nothing more than a way of your own making. Saint Basil the Great says, “The good is not good unless it is done in a good way.” This is the second trap by which Satan catches a person when he cannot keep him away from God. He allows him to do certain things to some extent, but still has him do them in his own way rather than in the way God commands. But when a person escapes this trap as well and truly does what is right, when he escapes even this...
“And they fail in this purpose”—when the demons fail, because people escape Satan and perform the good rightly—then he assumes another guise. Quietly, very quietly: “They approach in silence and praise us as more honorable souls who live according to God.” They come and settle beside the person, saying to him, “If only everyone else did what you do.” Then our heads swell with pride, and everything is lost. If someone were to examine these three things separately, he would see that each of us has been caught in one of these three traps.
Either we do nothing at all, or we do something that is not good, or, if we do something good, we spend every day accusing those who do not—and so we lose that good as well. In the end, there is no reward at all. That is why, when people sometimes ask me, “How are things going?” I answer, “I see leaves, many leaves. But what will happen at the vintage? What will happen at the harvest?” The question is whether there will be fruit then, because fruit presupposes many other things. I do not know which category you belong to. If you are in the third, you do things rightly, but you must believe that it is not you who do them. Christ does them through us, and therefore you are unprofitable servants. The Church tells us this in one of her hymns, and here you may turn to James.
“Every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” Everything, He says, belongs to You; nothing belongs to me. Yet we believe these things are our own. Would you like me to say a few words about each of these categories, which may be of greater help to certain souls?
Let me speak first about the first category: those who remain outside. This includes, for example, those who remain outside the Church, because we cannot separate the Church from Christ. When we speak about Christ, we must also speak about the Church. This is not a political, literary, or scientific discussion. We speak of “Christ, and Him crucified,” who is “a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles,” as Paul says. The first group in this category, then, consists of those who do not believe. They remain outside because of unbelief. They are not few; there are many who do not believe, or who believe vaguely, each in his own way. This is a large category.
At all costs, they want to reject God as Creator. They flatter themselves and take pride in having an ape for their father, for example, so long as they do not have Christ. You know how often this is discussed, especially among our young people abroad, where it is even proclaimed from university lecterns that we have the ape as our father.
Man is flattered by the thought of having an ape—an irrational animal—as his father. In many discussions, young women and others say that we come from the ape. One of the Fathers gave a splendid answer to a mother and daughter who insisted on this and even began lecturing him that we come from the ape and so forth. The daughter was educated...
...and scientifically trained in such matters. At last, when they parted, the usual polite words prevailed: “It was such a pleasure to meet you.” He answered, “For my part, I am sorry, because I have wasted half an hour talking with two monkeys.” When they heard him call them monkeys, they protested: “You have insulted us!” He replied, “What have you been saying all this time? Were you not saying that you came from the ape? Were you not monkeys?” In this and similar ways, he held them to account. But there is also a reasonable answer that could be given to such people: Why must I necessarily be the result of the ape’s evolution? Where do they actually see this evolution taking place before their eyes?
Now that we have fertilizers, vitamins, and hormones, it should be even easier for apes to develop and perform these human tasks. Why did the process stop? Why are apes not continuing to advance now? Are today’s apes not the same as those that existed before? And now they even have experimental laboratories available to them. Why does this evolution not happen today? And why must I be the evolution of the ape, rather than the ape being a caricature of me, something degenerated from me? The point is not whether the theory can stand scientifically; that is a matter for investigation. The real aim is to remove Christ from the picture, to remove God the Creator. That is the stubborn determination behind it. Christ even condescends to bring forward the man born blind and perform, as it were, an experiment upon his eyes: with a little saliva and a little earth, He fashions an eye, the most delicate organ in the creation of man, in order to show who He is. And even then...
...we reject Him. Yet at the funeral service we proclaim, “Your hands have made me and fashioned me.” They read this wrongly if they do not believe it—and woe to them. Come, then; let us sit down and discuss these things.
These are people who would not deign to make so much as a window themselves. Their ego will not allow them to admit the truth. Everything declares that there is something behind it all. Everything declares that I have not existed from all eternity, because we have created no more than our parents did. We have made as much as our parents made, and as much as their parents made...
We have made things, as did our parents, their parents, and their parents before them—but none of us created what exists. Everything here was already present. The most fundamental matter, however—the point at which man stumbles and causes us to stumble—is the mystery of life. People are very careless, not to call them foolish—very careless indeed. They flatter themselves that at last an opportunity has been found to overthrow God the Creator, because human beings have now begun to produce children in laboratory tubes.
But with what? Specifically, with the man’s sperm and the woman’s ovum. What, then, does the tube itself contribute?
What does the tube contribute? It takes the place of the mother; it takes the place of the womb. But what part does it actually play? Whether this happens in the womb or in a tube, it still begins with life that already exists. When man can create life, then let him come and discuss it with us. Man will always stumble over this. Others raced off to the stars, as they say, and went to the Moon and so forth, in order to overthrow the Gospel—to overthrow the Gospel. And his narrow mind, hiding behind a supposed humility, tells him: “Is it possible? What is the Earth compared with all the other heavenly bodies? It is nothing. Can the Earth really have first place?” Yes, the Earth does have first place, because it has life—my life. You do not know what your life is.
In all those places, have you found anything at all? Not even oxygen. You go there and come back carrying your oxygen bag, O man. And before anyone had even landed on the Moon, people were already making such claims. The late Gagarin—if one may call him blessedly departed, though unfortunately people did—said that he went up there and did not find God. Did he imagine that God was a traffic policeman who would say, “This way, Mr. Gagarin; that way, Mr. Gagarin”? When he was roasted like a steak in that airplane crash in Paris, I would have liked to ask him then what he thought: whether God exists or does not exist. “The heavens declare the glory of God.” If man were willing to reflect even a little on himself and on his own existence, he would be compelled to believe in something. There is something beyond us, and he can even identify it and understand it as he should, so that his faith may also bring salvation. For merely believing, as we said earlier, is not enough.
Nothing comes from believing in your own way. If we are speaking precisely, neither a supreme being saves, nor a higher power, nor some undefined God. Christ saves. “All authority has been given to the Son”; authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. The Millennialists insist that they hold fast to the Father. Yet “whoever does not have the Son does not have the Father; whoever has the Son has the Father also.” John 3:36. Christ is the starting point. Everything is done in the name of Jesus. In Christ we are born anew. In Christ we are preserved. We receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. Christ forgives us.
“Whatever you bind will be bound, and whatever you loose will be loosed.” He is the starting point; He is the motive and the power. And not just some imagined Christ—not some socialist, as certain foolish people call Him, or some communist. “Christ was a communist,” they say. Do you understand? No. We mean Jesus as the angel proclaimed Him: “Whom do you seek here? Jesus the crucified, the Nazarene.” Not just any Jesus—there have been many people named Jesus—but Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene. Or the One whom God revealed through Peter. I do not know whether you have read Matthew 16:16 and what it says. One day, when they were gathered together, Christ asked: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” In other words: When you go about among the people, what do you hear? Who do they think I am?
Each disciple repeated what he had heard: “Some say You are Jeremiah, others the Prophet Elijah, others John, and others one of the prophets.” Very well, that is what people outside are saying, in the coffeehouses. “But who do you say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Then Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The living God—not Apollo, not Zeus, but the living God. You are the Son; You are Christ, the Son of the living God. “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah”—blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah. “Why am I blessed, Lord?” “Because flesh and blood have not revealed this to you.” What you said did not come from you. Who said it? My Father spoke it through you. It is this Jesus, then—Jesus the Crucified, the Nazarene, the Christ—whom we mean.
He is the One we are speaking about. Believe in Him, if you truly wish to believe. The Protestant revolt began, as you know, in 1519. Luther, a papal priest, protested against the abuses and despotism of the papal system. And from 1519 until today, we have acquired four hundred varieties of Protestantism—another religion every year. “No, it is not this way; it is that way.” “No, it is not that way; it is this way.” “We possess the truth.” “And we possess another truth.” Four hundred of them—who, then, possesses the truth? Truth is one. “I am the truth.” The truth is Christ. When the bishop comes out holding the dikirion and trikirion, he says: “Look down from heaven, O Lord, and behold, and visit this vine.”
“This vine which Your right hand has planted.” He is not coming out to bless vineyards. The words are taken from the Old Testament: “this vine.” There is one Church and one true faith, but there are many kinds of religions and many kinds of churches—human constructions. What is true belongs to Christ, to the Crucified One, the Nazarene. It is not enough, then, merely to be a believer, merely to believe. The question is how you believe, in what manner you believe, and where you place your faith. The captain of a ship sincerely believes that he is on the right course, but he has made a small error. I ask you: will his sincerity save him from shipwreck? It will not. It is not enough for me to believe sincerely if my belief is mistaken. The question is what I believe.
Sadly, a great many people today—especially the young, who are shaped in all sorts of ways and caught in a trap while still in their mother’s womb—are being led into unbelief by a satanic method. What will these people do? How will they live? It is not enough for a person simply to believe; he must believe rightly. Many people do not believe today, but Christ foresaw this and said: “Fear not, little flock, for the Kingdom of Heaven has been given to you.” Christ is not a merchant, keeping accounts of profit and loss. He does not sacrifice one person for another; He offered Himself for everyone. That is the point. If only man knew the worth of a single soul.
Even if Christ had come into the world for only one person, the whole work He accomplished would have been worthwhile—to say nothing of the millions who have been saved and will be saved until the end of the age, whether known to us by name or entirely unknown. How many are there? No one knows. Even today Saints are continually being revealed: fragrant relics, bodies that were buried yet remain whole and give forth a sweet fragrance. These things happen today, in the midst of this utterly atheistic and materialistic twentieth century. It is sorrowful, then, that Satan keeps certain people far away—whoever they may be.
If you remember, Christ Himself foretold this.
“When the Son of Man comes, will He truly find faith on the earth?” What is the aim today? To wipe true faith from the earth. Yet miracles will happen again for those who are willing to believe. Do not be afraid, and do not be overwhelmed by the shouting and the noise. Christians today have fallen into defeatism. They see so much evil and so much unbelief spreading everywhere. But faith has never gone out to display itself. Unbelief is like gourds floating on the water: they are on the surface, and so they appear numerous. Yet the people of virtue, of right faith, who sincerely believe in Christ, are also many.
Let this not be mere wishful thinking. Yes, I do not deny the evil. But many people still believe today. And for the sake of these people—for the sake of the Saints, the Martyrs, the holy monastics, the Fathers, and the Theotokos—God still preserves this foul weed called the earth. Blessed are those who, because of them, make use of this time of His goodness and patient endurance. For, as Paul says, the goodness and patient endurance of God lead us to metanoia, to repentance. He gives us an opportunity to repent. If there had been no people praying for the world to be preserved until 1950, for example, when I returned to Christ, I would have been somewhere carrying firewood into Satan’s Hell.
But through God’s patient endurance and goodness, He gave me the opportunity to return, to repent, and to enter the Church. The same is true of others who are younger: some returned ten years ago, some five, some eight, some one year ago, and others only days ago. If our Church had a system that gently required confessors to record those newly returning to the Church, we would see that thousands come back every year. Here the Prophet Elijah’s experience is instructive. He said that he alone was left, but the Lord put him to shame: “Seven thousand have still not bowed the knee to Baal,” He told him. “You are not alone.” Elijah could see only himself. Let us not fall into this defeatism. There are many people—unknown people whom no one even knows about—even here in this city.
Here in this Babylon there are scientists who hold a prayer rope in their hands. Yes, unbelief also exists here in this Babylon. I do not deny it; it exists in university chairs and even in schools of theology. But believers also exist. Do you understand the weight of this counterbalance? One genuine banknote can outweigh billions of worthless old notes at the bank. So do not be afraid. Christ has power, and Christ has His people. Another group belonging to this first category consists of those who remain far from Christ and His Orthodox Church because of ignorance.
At this point, I would also like to call our own attention to something: to some degree, we bear responsibility. Am I responsible for another person’s sin? Yes, we bear responsibility, and that responsibility has many aspects. “But what can I do to help another person learn the truth? That is the Church’s work.” This, for example, is our first refrain. Yes—but “the Church” is an abstract expression. Who makes up the Church? Is it not people drawn from among us? They do not come from abroad, nor are they specially made to order. The clergyman comes from the same lump of dough as everyone else in the world; together with the fullness of the Church, the clergy serve as its officers.
Can you picture it? Take a kneading trough filled with dough. You cut off one piece and make it into a loaf; another piece becomes a round loaf; other pieces become bread rings; another becomes rusks; another becomes breadsticks. You keep cutting off pieces, and then you cut off one piece and make it into the prosphora. Even the prosphora comes from that same lump of dough. This is the dough we have; this is the quality of the Church’s people. Since we live in the twentieth century, how can you demand dough that will produce another Chrysostom, another Basil, another Athanasius? How? Besides, are you and I free of responsibility? What have you and I done for the Church? Do you have a good child?
Have you offered that child to the Church? You give the best to God. If I have a fine gift, I think I will give it to my dearest friend. Are you and I good people? Have we offered ourselves to God? “I am not capable.” Who told you that? Did you receive a letter? Has anyone sent you an answer? Did you say, “My God, I offer myself,” and did He answer, “You are no use to Me”? Do you possess any such correspondence? Keep it; you will need it when you go up there. None of those supposedly good people—who consider themselves and their families moral and demand a moral Church, who are educated and demand an educated Church, who consider themselves holy, honorable, and moral and demand clergy of the same kind—have offered anything to the Church. How, then, will this Church be staffed, and how will it fulfill its mission?
How will it fulfill the lofty mission expected of it—and rightly expected? Can anyone accomplish that alone? We are not uninvolved in this matter. Of course, when someone commits some wrongdoing, we are quick to strike him with thunderbolts. That is true. But what would happen if someone struck us with the same thunderbolts? What if he applied the words, “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” When I was abroad, some people said to me: “That man has been excommunicated under the Twenty-Seventh Canon.” I will not tell you where, lest I scandalize you. “He is excommunicated,” they said. “Is that so?” “Of course. Do you know the Rudder?” “Certainly I do. But I saw you yesterday at the Church during the veneration of the Cross, and I saw that you did not come forward to receive Holy Communion. Are you perhaps excommunicated under the Ninth Apostolic Canon?” He merely stared at me. “We could say more,” I told him.
“Shall I find some more Canons you do not observe, my child? You do not fast; you blaspheme; you steal. Look: that man is excommunicated once, while you and I are excommunicated a hundred times over. Where will we end up if we begin biting one another like this?” But we do not understand that. We do not look at our own sins, nor do we concern ourselves with becoming humble and saying: “My God, if there is anything I can do—if one of my children...” I knew a man from a village in Evrytania who had a large family of four or five children, including two or three boys. What was his prayer? “Believe me, Lord, there is no one in my household who will come and light Your oil lamps—no one who will become a monk or enter the clergy. There is no one in my house.” And he wept. All three of his sons entered the clergy.
Today that man himself wears black, but this came after ten or fifteen years of prayer. He would weep: “There is no one here. The Church is falling; the Church is in danger; the Church is being reviled. Will no one arise to support her? Have I nothing to offer from among my children, from my own family? You gave so much for me; You sacrificed Yourself for me. Can I offer nothing from my own flesh and blood?” And Christ heard him. Who among us—or among those gentlemen in drawing rooms and coffeehouses, at racetracks and stadiums, who pour out venom against the Church and against all these things—has ever offered anything, or has ever said, “I will offer myself”? Christ said: “Sacrifices and offerings do not please You; bulls and calves do not please You.”
This is what we are, and we receive accordingly, because, as Saint Athanasius the Great and the Old Testament say, “As the people are, so are their rulers.” We are no better. And yet even today, as I told you earlier, there are towering spiritual figures whose sandal straps we are not worthy to untie. What slanders have we not heard lately? What have those newspapers not written? What filth have they not spewed against the clergy and others? If you wish and have time, come this afternoon, when I shall speak here after 5:30, and hear about these things. You will say, “What is happening? Is such a war truly being waged?” Yes, such a war is being waged. And so many people remain in ignorance.
We have made no effort at all. For example, there was a police officer here. I do not know his rank; perhaps he was a sergeant. He knew that his director’s wife was planning the very next day to kill the child in her womb, cold-bloodedly and with premeditation. That evening I announced that I had published a book entitled Avoiding Childbearing Is a Mortal Sin. The trams were still running in those days. This young man—he was engaged at the time, as I learned afterward—and his fiancée immediately took a copy. But how could he deliver it to his director’s wife after nine o’clock at night? They took it and said, “God will help.” And they arrived. They got off the tram and rang the bell. The lady answered through the intercom upstairs. They said:
“You know us. We happened to be passing by and wanted to wish you good evening over the intercom. That was all; please forgive us.” “Come upstairs! Come upstairs; do not leave.” That was exactly what they wanted—to go upstairs. So they went up, and together with the newspaper the gentleman was carrying, he left the book he had taken on a side table just inside the hall—and forgot it. He “forgot” it! You understand what that “forgot” means. The young couple left, went downstairs, wished them good night, apologized, and so forth. The result was that the lady saw the newspaper. “Oh, the young people forgot their newspaper.” She lifted it, but underneath lay the viper. She saw the book, and its title read Avoiding Childbearing Is a Mortal Sin. She did not touch it. She left it there and would not take it in her hand. At last, after a great struggle within herself, she picked it up and took it to her bedside table. But how could she bring herself to open it? Later...
At midnight she began reading it from the back, or however she began, and by daybreak she had read the whole book. Then the tears began to flow within her, and her eyes grew red. The child was saved and would be fifteen years old today. A person of faith is resourceful. A person of faith does not live only for himself. Do you know what it means to be a Christian? To be a Christian means to place yourself at the service of another. A Christian puts into practice what Paul says: “Love does not seek its own, but the good of the other.” People remain in ignorance, although we could in some way bring light into their darkness, metaphorically speaking. So many resources are available today. Panagopoulos cannot go throughout the whole world; neither can Kantiotis, nor this or that person, nor the fathers who preach. But a little cassette can travel to its destination.
People have turned back and found Christ. A gentleman told me about this; I do not know whether he is here tonight, but he came the other day. Somewhere down below here, perhaps around Kallithea, he picked up a gendarme in his car and played a cassette for him. When that man heard the cassette, he changed. He set out on the path of God and now wants to go to Holy Confession, and so forth. An upheaval took place within him. One person did one small thing—what he could do from his own position. Today a person can reach the ends of the earth. Once I was speaking somewhere—I shall not mention names or details—and the hall was so full that there was nowhere for people to stand. They surrounded me even from behind. At one point while I was speaking, I heard a woman’s voice behind me say, “If only they had wings!” I heard her but did not turn around; I continued my talk. When I had finished, I kept that remark in mind.
And I said, “Who was it that said during the talk, ‘Oh, if only they had wings’?” A well-known and distinguished lady, highly educated and very wealthy, said, “I said it, Mr. Panagopoulos.” “What did you mean? I do not understand such things.” She said, “If only your words had wings.” “And what would they do?” “They would travel throughout the whole world.”
“Do they not have wings?” I asked. “They do,” she said. “You have those wings inside your handbag.”
She stared at me. “Why are you staring at me?” I said. “You have the wings in your handbag—not five hundred or a thousand drachmas, but hundreds of thousands, even millions. You could fill the world with these words. Would not even one person come to faith? Would not even one person be enlightened and discover that there is another way to live?” Yet this does not happen. People here send material abroad. I was on the Holy Mountain—forgive me for turning the discussion back to myself—and when I was leaving, crowded into the little boat at Daphne, many people were coming aboard. I saw Theoklitos of Dionysiou pointing me out from the ship to a priest. The priest appeared to be a foreigner. Then I saw him cut through the crowd, come over, seize me, and kiss me. “Are you Panagopoulos?” he asked.
“Unfortunately, I am,” I replied. I had seen Theoklitos of Dionysiou pointing me out to him. “Do you know,” the priest said, “how earnestly I prayed to God that I might meet you?” “Why?” I said. “Would you have lost anything if you had never met me?” “I heard your cassette, the talk entitled ‘One…,’ on a bus. They were going on an excursion and had one of our cassettes from here. I was down there in California, and I wanted to meet you. When I heard that talk, do you know how many people went to Holy Confession because of it?” Some dear soul from here must have spent fifty, forty, or thirty drachmas—whatever the price was then—and sent it there. It became the means by which a whole circle of people was enlightened. And they, in turn, will say a few words to their children, and their children will pass something on to others.
This is how the message spreads and the darkness of ignorance is enlightened. Yet we do not do this. Instead, we say, “They are to blame.” I do not deny that they too are to blame, but we are also to blame. When ignorance exists, it very often exists because of us: we remain closed up within ourselves, and some even say, “What concern is it of mine? Others have been appointed to do that work. Let them do whatever they want.” That is not right. When you see another person caught in error, you must find some way to help him—not by driving a nail into him, not by confronting him bluntly, but graciously, humbly, and with words that bring light, after praying first. Let your speech be seasoned with salt, so that whatever you offer may take hold. Do not throw out hard, dry bait; offer something soft that will adhere within the other person’s nous, his spiritual intellect.
When Jesus sees that you speak out of love, that you speak from genuine concern, and that you yourself are moved to tears first, things change. The other person is touched, begins to pay attention, and is set in the right direction—or else is left without excuse. Holy Scripture presents two relevant passages. One is found in the eighteenth and third chapters of Ezekiel, and the other is Isaiah 55:11. In Isaiah it says, “The word that goes forth from My mouth shall not return empty.” The word goes forth from a person’s mouth with two possible outcomes: a person hears, obeys, and is saved; or a person hears, refuses to obey, and is condemned. If he is unwilling to respond, he must at least be left without excuse, so that tomorrow he cannot stand before Christ and say, “I never heard.” You heard, but you rejected it. The other passage says, to put it simply:
“When I say to the lawless man that he shall die in his sin”—that is, that he will be condemned—and you fail to admonish him... Notice: it does not say to attack or condemn him. Condemnation and judgment are forbidden. God will judge that person; and if even God has not yet judged him, shall I judge him? If you do not admonish the lawless man, notice the words Scripture uses: “He shall die in his sin”; he will be condemned. “But his blood I shall require at your hand.” You will answer to Me for it. Then, of course, comes the reasonable question and response: “Who listens to you today? Do people listen nowadays? Where can I go and speak? To whom can one tell the truth? They do not listen. So I too shall close my mouth and go home.” Really? Do you think that is the answer? No!
Pay attention to what follows: “But if you admonish the lawless man”—Scripture insists on this and comes to the heart of the matter—“and the lawless man does not turn from his lawless way, he shall die in his sin”; he will be condemned. “But you have delivered your own soul.” I have done my duty. This much lies within my power: to offer a prayer, send a book, send a cassette, or speak a good word. That lies within my power. I cannot put a new brain into his head. I am not a surgeon; I cannot perform transplants. Those are works that the Lord God performs. I did what I was able to do. If many people remain in ignorance, then, they remain so for this reason and for certain other reasons as well. See how evil becomes known, multiplies, grows, and races forward at dizzying speed.
Evil reaches everyone, while people who encounter something good do not pass it on. Whatever evil we have, we spread. Once I went with an elder—he heard Holy Confessions while I preached—to the mountain villages of Kyparissia, in the municipality of Trifylia. One evening I asked him, “Tell me, Geronta, what are you seeing here? We have stayed in this village for four days. Which sin appears most frequently in Holy Confession? Blasphemy, theft, gambling, or something else?” “Avoiding childbearing,” he said. “Up here?” “Yes, even here.” “But how did it reach this place?” “A woman from Athens,” he said, “came to Raptopoulo, a village across the way—those of you from that region will confirm it—and introduced the fashion.”
She introduced the fashion of avoiding childbearing. “And in these five villages,” the elder told me, “there is not a single baby; not one baby’s cry can be heard.” This came from a woman who arrived from here, adorned with jewelry around her neck and imagining herself very wise and knowledgeable. See how evil spreads! I preached there on those two evenings. When we returned the following year, children’s clothes were hanging outside every young household. That shows how evil spreads on the negative side, but good can spread in the same way. People will listen; they desire the truth and are receptive. But they have not heard it, and we can do something about that. Even if the Church wished to do it alone, how many workers are there—five or ten percent of us? How could they accomplish it by themselves? All of us have an obligation to pass on whatever we know and whatever we can. Therefore, if some remain in ignorance, they remain so because of
our own indifference. If a person placed himself at the service of others, he could help in some way—especially beginning with his own flesh and blood. A few days ago, while I was away, I heard that Benedict, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, had come here. I do not know whether he has left. Among other things, he earnestly appealed to the Church and to the Greeks to send people there to staff and care for the All-Holy Shrines. Only a hundred people are holding everything together throughout Palestine. What can they preserve, and what can they attend to first? Who has taken an interest in these things? Which of us? The Church asks for our own flesh and blood; she gives her lifeblood and asks for ours. Is there anything more honorable than for a person to be bound to the Church?
Is there? And yet we remain far away and begin spewing poison against her. When we die, then we shall understand the harm we did to ourselves here. And if the Church and the clergy are no longer there, then we shall understand. We do not yet understand it now. If one day no priest is available and someone must be buried without the funeral service, then people will begin to understand how matters truly stand. Ignorance does not exist merely because the Church or the pulpit has failed to do its work. The success of a talk—of preaching and enlightenment in general—does not depend solely on the speaker. Christ says otherwise. The parable of the sower, which we heard in recent weeks, teaches the opposite. The sower scattered the seed: some fell on the beaten path, some on rocky ground,
some among thorns, while one quarter fell on good soil and bore fruit. Seventy-five percent of the seed was lost—not because the speaker lacked eloquence, not because the sower did his work poorly, and not because the seed was bad, but because of the soil. One kind was hard; another had rocks beneath the surface; another had thorns within it and tried to combine God with the world. That is why it failed. This is the reason. Even if Christ Himself came to earth today, people here would not receive Him. We would crucify Him again—and we would crucify Him in a modern way. Today we would devise a “super-crucifixion” for Christ. People today do not want Christ. They do not want His Gospel. They knowingly remain in ignorance and unbelief. You have heard people say, “I do not want to know; do not tell me.” When you tell someone a truth, he says, “Do not tell me.”
He does not want to hear it. The Gospel is not to blame. The priest is not to blame. The Church is not to blame. Christ is not to blame. The person himself is to blame. I have told you this story before, but for the sake of the account I shall tell it again. It concerns what happened in Corinth in the days of Lais, that famously immoral woman. During her lifetime, a kind of looking glass—a mirror—was invented and sold at an astronomical price. Lais was among the first to buy one. She paid a great deal of money for it.
The next day, she smashed it in a rage. She shattered it into a million pieces. The servant girls who witnessed what she was doing...
The maidservants who saw what she was doing said that she had gone mad. She had paid so much money for something that anyone would want to own. Today we go to a kiosk, pay five drachmas, and put a little mirror in our pocket. A woman carries a little mirror with her. But in those days, owning a mirror was a great thing. People had to look at their reflection in water. So they wondered what had happened to her. One of the cleverest women close to her approached her tactfully and managed to draw out what had happened. And what did she discover? She discovered that Laïs had smashed the mirror, without caring how much she had paid for it, and had smashed it with such fury because it reminded her that her face was beginning to wrinkle.
We do not want the preacher; we do not want the Gospel; we do not want Christ. That is why we remain where we are. But we are burying our heads in the sand. We are burying our heads in the sand. If Christ were to change “You shall not commit adultery” into “You shall commit adultery,” “You shall not engage in fornication” into “You shall engage in fornication,” “You shall not steal” into “You shall steal,” and fasting into “You shall not fast,” and so on, then we would say, “Ah, this is the Christ we want! I will accept a Gospel like that. Why have You made our lives bitter all these years?” But Christ will not do that. As Paul says in Hebrews, “Every transgression received its just reward.” When angels sinned, He cast them into Tartarus—angels who had sinned. And when our Christ appeared to take away our sins, He went up upon the Cross. Will He simply excuse everything in us?
He does forgive them, but egotism is what prevents a person from being willing to see and willing to believe. Today they have declared God dead and buried Him—especially the young and the intellectuals, apart, of course, from certain people who can see. A fifteen- or sixteen-year-old young lady puts on men’s trousers and takes a pipe in her hand, and for her God is dead. Likewise, the young man, with his own theories, has declared Him dead, buried Him, and done away with everything; then he sleeps peacefully. The world has filled with psychiatric hospitals. Is there any country with a higher standard of living than Sweden? Yet there are thousands of suicides. Christ is the One who gives the answer to every human problem. And not just some Christ of our own imagining, but the Christ I have told you about:
Christ crucified, within His Orthodox Church. When a person goes there, the scales of egotism, ignorance, and unbelief will fall from his eyes. He will cease to be Saul the persecutor; he will become Paul and offer his whole self. The ways are the same, provided that the person is willing. Christ has an answer for everyone. He will no longer be an unbeliever, but a believer. Christ has left wounds in this world into which a person may put his finger and become a believer, like Thomas. Christ allows Himself to be examined. This is not the Catholic saying, “Believe and do not inquire.” It is: believe and examine. Yes. If someone seeks Christ even only among the Saints and in the holy relics scattered throughout Greece and throughout Orthodoxy, he will find Him. But one may also go and hear Christ proclaimed through negative testimony.
At the shrine of Saint Gerasimos, or at Saint Nektarios, one can hear Him proclaimed through negative testimony. Do you hear Satan? He is the one proclaiming God there. He is the one who said, as it is written in the Gospel, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” The devil calls Him the Son of the Most High God, while man—who has received such benefits from God, who was brought by Him from non-being into being, endowed with gifts, and given a second life—rejects Him. How sorrowful this is! And yet how great is the forbearance of our Christ, who would sacrifice Himself again for each person if He knew that person would believe. He would ascend the Cross again for every one of us, because He has a special way of bringing each person in. That is all for this evening. Forgive me for the manner and tone in which I have spoken.

«Πᾶν δώρημα τέλειον, ἄνωθέν ἐστι καταβαῖνον, ἐκ τοῦ Πατρὸς τῶν φώτων». Κάθε τι, λέει, είναι δικό σου, δεν είναι δικό μου, και εμείς πιστεύουμε ότι είναι δικά μας. Θα θέλατε να έλεγα μερικά για κάθε μια εκ των κατηγοριών αυτών, που ίσως διευκολύνουν περισσότερο ορισμένες ψυχές;
Και επιστημονικώς στα πράγματα. Τέλος, όταν χωρίστηκαν, επρυτάνευσαν τα ψέματα εκείνα τα δικά μας, «Χάρηκα πάρα πολύ». Και αυτός απήντησε: «Εγώ λυπήθηκα, διότι μιλούσα και έχασα την ώρα μου με δύο μαϊμούδες, μια μισή ώρα». Όταν άκουσαν ότι είπε «μαϊμούδες», πήρε θέση. «Μας προσβάλατε». «Τι λέγατε μέχρι τώρα; Δεν λέγατε ότι προέρχεστε από τον πίθηκο; Δεν ήσασταν μαϊμούδες;». Σε διάφορες περιπτώσεις ούτω καθεξής τους υπευθύνους. Αλλά δυστυχώς και το λογικό είναι το εξής, που θα μπορούσε να δοθεί στους ανθρώπους αυτούς μια απάντηση: γιατί σώνει και καλά θέλει να είμαι εγώ η εξέλιξη του πιθήκου; Πού βλέπει στα μάτια την εξέλιξη αυτή;
Με τι όμως; Ειδικά με το σπέρμα του ανδρός και με το ωάριον της γυναικός. Ο σωλήν σε τι;
αν δέσετε επιδεδεμένα και όσα λύσετε λυμένα, λύσετε και του δουλουσικού του. Είναι η αφετηρία, αυτός είναι το κίνητρο. Κι όχι κάποιο Χριστό, ή κάποιο σοσιαλιστή που λένε ορισμένοι ανόητοι, ή κάποιο κομμουνιστή που λένε. «Ήταν κομμουνιστής ο Χριστός», ε; Καταλάβατε; Όχι, τον Ιησού, εκείνον που εδογμάτισε ο άγγελος: «Τί ζητεῖτε ὧδε; Ἰησοῦν τὸν ἐσταυρωμένον, τὸν Ναζαρινόν». Όχι κάποιον Ιησού· πολλοί Ιησοί υπήρχανε, αλλά τον Ιησούν τον Εσταυρωμένον, τον Ναζαρινόν. Ή εκείνον που είπε ο Θεός διά του Πέτρου. Δεν ξέρω αν έχετε διαβάσει το Ματθαίο 16, 16, τι λέγει. Σε μια συνάντηση μια μέρα ο Χριστός μας ερώτησε: «Τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ἄνθρωποι εἶναι, τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;». Τι λέει που γυρίζετε έξω, τι ακούτε, για ποιον έχουν;
Της Εκκλησίας. Το φαντάζεστε; Πάρτε ένα σκαφίδι που έχει μέσα ζυμάρι. Κόβετε ένα κομμάτι και το κάνετε μια φραντζόλα. Κόβετε ένα άλλο κομμάτι και το κάνετε καρβέλι. Κόβετε άλλα κομμάτια και κάνετε κουλούρια. Κόβετε άλλο κομμάτι και κάνετε παξιμάδια. Κόβετε άλλο κομμάτι και κάνετε κριτσίνια. Κόβετε, κόβετε, κόβετε. Κόβετε και ένα κομμάτι και το κάνετε προσφορά. Από το ίδιο το φύραμα αυτό θα γίνει και η προσφορά. Αυτό είναι το φύραμα, αυτή είναι και η ποιότητα των ανθρώπων της Εκκλησίας. Πώς, εφόσον έχουμε 20ό αιώνα, ζητάς φύραμα Χρυσοστόμου και Βασιλείου και Αθανασίου; Πώς; Άλλωστε, είσαι ανεύθυνος και είμαι ανεύθυνος; Τι έκαμες εσύ και εγώ για την Εκκλησία; Έχεις καλό παιδί;
Έδωσες στην Εκκλησία; Γιατί το καλύτερο το δίνεις στον Θεό. Εγώ, αν έχω ένα δώρο καλό, θα το δώσω στον πιο αγαπημένο μου φίλο ή στην πιο αγαπημένη μου φιλενάδα, νομίζω. Είσαι καλός εσύ και εγώ; Εδώσαμε τον εαυτό μας στον Θεό; Δεν είμαι ικανός εγώ. Ποιος σου το είπε; Έχεις γράμμα; Πήρες απάντηση από κανέναν; Του είπες εσύ, «Θεέ μου, εγώ προσφέρομαι», και σου είπε Αυτός «Δεν μου κάνεις»; Έχεις καμιά αλληλογραφία τέτοια; Φύλαξέ τη, θα σου χρειαστεί όταν πας απάνω. Κανένας από τους λεγομένους καλούς, που πιστεύουν για τους εαυτούς τους και την οικογένειά τους ότι είναι ηθικοί και ζητάνε ηθική Εκκλησία, είναι μορφωμένοι και ζητάνε μορφωμένη Εκκλησία, είναι άγιοι, τίμιοι, ηθικοί και ζητούν τέτοιους, δεν προσέφεραν να δώσουν τίποτα στην Εκκλησία. Πώς, λοιπόν, αυτή η Εκκλησία θα επανδρωθεί και πώς θα επιτελέσει τον προορισμό της;
αδιαφορίας της δικής μας, που αν ο άνθρωπος διέθετε τον εαυτό του και στην υπηρεσία του άλλου, κατά κάποιον τρόπο θα μπορούσε, κατ’ εξοχήν αρχίζοντας από αίμα, από αίμα. Έμαθα προ ημερών — έλειπα, δεν ήμουν εδώ — ότι είχε έρθει ο Πατριάρχης Ιεροσολύμων εδώ, δεν ξέρω αν έφυγε, ο Βενέδικτος, και μέσα στα άλλα παρακαλούσε θερμώς την Εκκλησία και τους Έλληνες να πάνε άνθρωποι κάτω να επανδρώσουν τα Πανάγια Προσκυνήματα. Εκατό άνθρωποι σε ολόκληρη την Παλαιστίνη κρατάνε. Τι να κρατήσουν και τι να πρωτοκρατήσουν; Ποιος ενδιαφέρθηκε για αυτά τα πράγματα; Ποιοι από εμάς; Αίμα ζητάει, αίμα δίδει και αίμα θέλει η Εκκλησία. Υπάρχει τιμητικότερο πράγμα από το να έχει σχέση ο άνθρωπος με την Εκκλησία;
Δεν θέλουμε τον ομιλητή, δεν θέλουμε το Ευαγγέλιο, δεν θέλουμε τον Χριστό. Γι’ αυτό μένουμε εκεί. Στρουθοκαμηλίζουμε όμως, στρουθοκαμηλίζουμε. Εάν ο Χριστός τροποποιήσει το «οὐ μοιχεύσεις», κάμ’ το «να μοιχεύσεις», το «οὐ πορνεύσεις», κάμ’ το «να πορνεύσεις», το «οὐ κλέψεις», κάμ’ το «να κλέψεις», το «οὐ νηστεύσεις», κάμ’ το «να μην νηστεύσεις» και λοιπά, «α, εσένα θέλουμε. Παίρνω ένα τέτοιο Ευαγγέλιο. Τι μας επίκρανες τόσα χρόνια;» Αλλά δεν πρόκειται να το κάνει ο Χριστός. «Πᾶσα παρακοή», λέγει ο Παύλος στους Εβραίους, «ἔλαβεν ἔνδικον μισθαποδοσίαν». «Ἀγγέλους ἁμαρτήσαντας» τούς εταρτάρωσε, αγγέλους αμαρτήσαντας. Και ο Χριστός μας, όταν παρουσιάστηκε να πάρει τις αμαρτίες τις δικές μας, ανέβηκε στον σταυρό. Θα τα χαρίσει σε εμάς;
