Summary

The lecture presents the Devil as humanity’s personal and persistent enemy, warning that Christian spiritual labor must always be joined to vigilance. Because this ancient enemy possesses immense experience and cunning, Christians depend on Christ, the Church, the sacraments, prayer, patience, and spiritual counsel for protection. Satan and the angels are limited beings existing in place and time, whereas omnipresence belongs uniquely to the Holy Trinity.

After this break of several months, the good God granted that we should gather together once again.

For our first sermon this evening, allow me to speak about something that has not been discussed in this hall. We are always speaking about ourselves and about our God, and to some extent that is good. But it is not only the two of us. There is someone else as well, and unless a person comes to know this other one thoroughly, his spiritual effort will not succeed. There is also an enemy. We are not alone.

There are we and our God, we and Christ, we and the Most Holy Theotokos, we and our Saints, we and our fellow human beings. But there is also a common enemy, whom God pointed out to the first two human beings. It was such a serious matter that, when He told Adam in particular, “Work and keep watch,” behind that word “keep watch” stood this third person, the enemy of mankind. A person who labors amid the good things of the world but does not keep watch will one day find that he has been deceived. There is one who causes

harm to man by deceit, from evening until morning and from morning until evening. From the time a person becomes conscious of himself until the time he dies, he will always have this enemy over his head and beside him, brainwashing him, planting doubts, blasphemous thoughts, and delusions, seeking, if possible, to crush him to dust in a single second. He is the one called the devil, the one called Satan, the one called the Ancient Serpent. And yet a person ought to know enough about this enemy to take the necessary precautions.

But he knows very little. Not only does he not know him; often, by his attitude and behavior, he treats him as a friend, as a great benefactor of mankind. How many people tell others to go to the devil? How many mothers tell their children to go to the devil, as though they were sending them to God, into His embrace? How many people consign their animals, their tools, and their possessions to the devil, wishing that his kingdom might increase and God’s might diminish? For when you tell another person to go to the devil, that is not merely blasphemy, as some say; it is a wish: “I wish that you may go there.” You are wishing that Satan’s kingdom may increase through the person you send him and, consequently, that Christ’s Kingdom may be diminished. We become antichrists in the fullest sense of the word.

Perhaps we do so unknowingly, and many people take this to be mere blasphemy. They bring this wish addressed to the devil before the priest, their confessor, as a matter of blasphemy. And if our spiritual father should ask, “My child, do you perhaps blaspheme?” they answer, “No, Father, I do not blaspheme. Once in a while I only mention ‘the one out there.’” Well, stop doing that; do not say it. It is not a good thing. “But that is not blasphemy.” You are not blaspheming Satan when you say, “May Satan take him.” You are blaspheming Christ, you are blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos, you are blaspheming God, the Cross, and the Saints. Unfortunately, then, man does not know this third person; and if he does know him, sometimes he is crucified.

By us—the one out there.

What he does, how he acts upon a person, what he can do, what he cannot do, when he began, and so forth—all this remains hidden. To most people, this is merely talk, not praxis, the active spiritual life. So, as a first installment this evening, let us speak about this third person. We need to learn certain details about him so that we may guard ourselves. Opposing armies depend not so much upon their weapons as upon their propaganda and upon those people through whom they manage to draw out certain secrets, infiltrate the opposing camp, penetrate the other side’s strategic plans, and enter its ranks, so that they can steal and gather

certain information necessary for deciding how to act and how to fight their enemy. Do we know any details? Do we know the strength of the enemy? Do we know his movements? Do we even know whether an enemy exists? Many people do not even admit that this third person, the enemy, exists—that Satan exists. They do not accept him as a person, but say that he is a negative force, evil, or moral evil. Nothing of the sort. These are Satan’s own works: he conceals his existence. This is a great matter and a great success for Satan, because this is what Satan manages to do:

he conceals his existence. And when our enemy conceals his existence—when the germ that consumes our inward parts day and night hides its existence—we will certainly take no precautions, give no medicine, and mount no defense against it. That is why a person must learn about him. He is a person, filled with malice and hatred toward God. But because he cannot harm God, he harms God’s property: he harms us. Therefore, we too must be watchful and know his plans. His attack is personal, the defense against him is personal, and his acts of sabotage are personal. This is how Christ dealt with him. Christ did not speak of moral evil or of a negative force; He spoke of a person.

Read the Epistle of Paul to the Hebrews, in the second chapter, where he writes to his own countrymen. It forms part of the epistle reading that we read at the blessing of water. There he says specifically: “Since the children have partaken of flesh and blood”—since human beings, he says, are made of flesh and blood—“Christ Himself likewise shared in the same.” He shared in them in a similar manner, not in precisely the same way, because Christ was not born of the will of man, nor of blood and flesh; He is of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary. “He Himself likewise shared in the same.” Why? “That through His death He might destroy the one who had the power of death,” the ruler of death. Who is that, Lord? “That is, the devil.” He presents him as a person.

He does not present him as an abstract concept, as some people claim. After all, why else did Christ come into the world? “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested: that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Yes, this is the one who revealed his deceitful purposes from humanity’s very first steps. The first person he managed to isolate, as we say, and draw into his nets and under his influence was Eve. Through Eve he also ensnared Adam, and afterward the whole of humanity. Today we see the consequences of this entrapment of our first-created parents: death throughout the whole human race. A person comes into the world dead

through what is called ancestral sin: “I was conceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me.” That is precisely why we bury him in Baptism, so that he may rise again as a spiritual man and live eternally in Christ. The matter, then, is serious—indeed, I dare say, even more serious than the subject of Christ. Perhaps that sounds daring, but I wish to emphasize the point. For unless a person knows who Satan is and what harm he has done and continues to do to humanity, he will not appreciate the work of Christ. He will imagine that Christ came into the world merely to put on a display. Do you understand? But if a person knows of the existence of this personal being, then he will appreciate Christ’s work and say, “My Christ, what You have done for me!”

“My Christ, what You still do for me, though every day I fall so many times and You heal me! What is man?” And yet, I tell you, not only does man fail to regard Satan as his enemy; this also shows that we feel no enmity toward sin. We may avoid sin out of fear, go to Holy Confession, and so forth, but we do not loathe it.

We do not regard sin as our enemy because we do not regard the father of sin, the devil, as our enemy. If we regarded the devil as our enemy, we would also regard sin as our enemy. Perhaps we have not yet reflected upon the matter, and we do not know what harm is done by these two realities: Satan and sin. That is why we conduct ourselves as we do. But from these reflections

a question rises spontaneously to our lips: “Very well, where did this Satan come from? Where did Satan come from?” Recall the words I mentioned earlier, which God spoke to Adam and Eve: “Work and keep watch.” Keep watch against whom? A third one is implied here. Who else could it be? By whom are we threatened? When does a person stand guard, lock his door, and secure it? When there is an enemy, when there is a thief, when there is someone who can harm us. So, when there was only one couple and no other human being in the world, who could possibly harm them? There was someone called an evil spirit, a wicked spirit, one called Satan, one called the devil. He therefore existed when our Christ made Adam and Eve. “Your hands made me and fashioned me.”

Satan. But who made Satan? He became what he is; he was not made that way. He became so. Have we ever read that he became so? Have we ever read in the one-chapter Epistle of Jude that he abandoned his own dwelling by his own choice? I want you to know, then, that Satan was originally an angel: the greatest cherub, who beheld the glory of God face to face. Being free, he chose not to remain in the place where the Creator had established him, but to set his throne above the throne of God. And through this attempt to rise above, he fell below. He had been an angel, the greatest of the angels, the most glorious cherub, beholding the glory of God face to face; and, unfortunately, he drew many others after him. Beelzebub, that Ancient Serpent, was like a commander-in-chief, and as commander-in-chief he led many astray. Tradition says—and our Church accepts this indirectly, as I shall explain—that at the time of the Fall, when Beelzebub was leading them, the Archangel Michael intervened and uttered the words that our Church also says after the Creed: “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.” Those who had fallen had fallen, but he held the others firm, and they did not fall. And this saying of the Archangel, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear,” our Church

has appointed to be said after the Creed, after the confession of the true Faith. I believe in one God; I believe in one Christ, begotten, not made; I believe in the Most Holy Theotokos, who is Ever-Virgin; I believe in the Cross; I believe in the death that took place under the Jew; I believe in the Resurrection; I believe in Baptism; and I believe that He is coming again at the Second Coming. I believe all these things, and then the Church says: “Gentlemen, you have confessed these things. Now stand with fear; stand aright. Believe them, guard them, and put them into practice.” This indirect use of the Archangel’s words shows, as I said, that our Church accepts that something of this kind took place far back in the beginning. Someone may now ask, “Did it happen that far back, or even earlier?”

Even earlier. For if we accept that God created man last and gave him the command to keep watch, then Satan’s Fall had already taken place. God first created the angelic world, the spiritual world. From it this evil order of Satan broke away for the reasons I mentioned earlier. Then God created the material world, and afterward He created the mixed world, man, composed of spirit and matter. Have you seen the Pantocrator above? What is shown in the first circle around Him? The angels. The spirits come first. Thus, in the thirty-eighth chapter of Job, it says that when God was making the earth, the stars, and the material creation,

the angels were praising Him. Therefore, the angelic world already existed. The Fall took place between the creation of the angelic world and the creation of the mixed being—that is, man, composed of spirit and matter. From this, then, we estimate Satan’s age. Satan must be about seven thousand five hundred years old. According to the Hebrew calendar, there were 5,508 years from the creation, from Adam until Christ. Add the roughly two thousand years since then, and we reach seven thousand five hundred years. How much time passed before Adam, back when the angels who praised God already existed, as Job writes in chapter thirty-eight, I do not know. Seven thousand five hundred years are certain. Seven thousand five hundred years. Whether there are another two hundred, three hundred, five hundred, or a thousand years, I do not know. You may say, “Why are you interested in Satan’s age? We conceal our own age; we reach thirty-nine and never turn forty. Why should we now be discussing Satan’s age?” There is a purpose in what I am saying, because many of us fail to recognize his experience. My dear friends, we are not dealing with some young girl who has put on a miniskirt and men’s trousers, let her hair loose, and taken up a cigarette in a holder. What are you talking about?

Secondly, are we not dealing with someone who has been cunning for 7,500 years? Am I some fourteen-year-old or eighteen-year-old girl, some young woman who has cast God aside and sees nothing beyond what is in her underwear and her empty head? We are not dealing with someone like that. We are dealing with a cunning person who has thousands of years of experience behind him, who has devoured saints, priests, bishops, and patriarchs; he has spared no one. And can we outwit Satan? Unless Christ has mercy on us, illumines our nous and our heart, and guards us from Satan’s devices, how can we ever make our way to heaven and see Paradise? We will not see Paradise even through binoculars or in a dream, much less live in it, unless we understand that we are dealing with such a cunning enemy and must labor for the salvation of our souls within the Church,

which shatters all his plans. Through the Mysteries and the clergy, this whole scheme and all the cunning of Satan are destroyed and brought to nothing. That is why he continually attacks Orthodox clergy. Whenever you hear accusations against priests, know that something is happening there that threatens Satan’s interests. The only people who possess authority over unclean spirits, and over all Satan’s plots and works against mankind, are the Orthodox clergy—no one else. Have you ever heard this kind of attack against the papists or the Protestants? No. It is always the Orthodox who are portrayed as doing everything wrong, because they alone have the authority

“to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.” Yes, let us not be deceived. If we paid attention, we would see Satan’s tracks and discover where the truth is. Satan himself helps us see where the truth is. Go into an Orthodox church. From the candle stand to the sanctuary, you will see everything in turmoil. During the vigil, people chatter idly about anything and everything. What happens in any so-called other church? Dead silence. Someone might say, “Where are we, in Paradise?” Yet among us there is talking, wandering about, and who knows what else. Strange disturbances happen only within the Orthodox Church. Why? Because it belongs to God. That is why all the regiments of demons from the whole Athens basin gather

in the Orthodox churches. People do not understand this, and many stay away from church because there is chatter, because they cannot find hesychia, inner stillness, or pray. But where else shall I go? Here is the Spirit; here is grace. That is precisely why the devil is here. If there were no grace, he would have no reason to come and stand guard. What would he be guarding? It is said that an elder once left his hermitage and went into the city with his disciple because of some urgent need. As they passed through a village, they saw a devil sitting comfortably on top of a church. Farther along they came to a hut and saw an entire regiment of demons gathered outside. The younger monk found this strange and asked, “Geronta, did you see something?” “What was I supposed to see?” the elder replied.

“There was a demon sitting on the village church we passed,” he said. “And do you see what is here?” “Who are all these here?” the elder asked. “No one prays in that church,” he replied. “One demon is enough to guard everyone there. But in this hut there is a married couple who pray, and that is why all these demons have gathered around it.” This should strengthen our faith. A child cries and disturbs me, so we will take it outside. Really? Yes, we will take it outside, but we may lose the ewe as well. When you ride the trolley and it rattles and roars, you can whisper with the woman beside you so that you can criticize someone else, and the noise of the wheels does not bother you. But now, in church, you hear everything? Who makes you notice it now? It is the other one, trying to drive you outside. Do you know whether Satan goes and pinches the child to make it cry? Do you know this or not?

This actually happened. One year I was preaching at Saint Philothei, speaking from the pulpit. A woman had gone to the front of the sanctuary to take her place in line to give her baby Holy Communion. The baby began crying and caused a commotion. Then voices arose from all around: “Go outside! Take the child outside!” I said, “If that woman goes outside, I will come down from the pulpit, and the sin will be upon you.” Why should she go outside? “Do you know,” I said, “that Satan may be pinching the child right now to make it cry, so that he can drive the mother outside and leave her spiritually exposed? Do you know this or not? Does Satan think that all of us here are saints?” Then I said, “In the name of Jesus Christ, let Satan leave the child alone.” The child stopped crying. They found it astonishing. There was no need for me to preach or say anything more. But because we fail to take account of this third person,

we do not consider what he does to a priest surrounded by thirty children, or what he does to all the others. We do not consider what he puts into a man’s head: that his work is to look after the church of Saint George, rather than the souls entering the church. They have made Saint George serve Saint George. It is the same with Saint Demetrios and Saint Constantine—nothing else matters.

A person must understand these things: what Satan puts into the speaker’s mind and what he puts into the chanter’s mind—making him strain himself raw merely to utter some foolishness or perform some affected vocal flourish. You must take all these things into account. And you will do so only when you know that the so-called third person exists. If you fail to take this person into account, know that nothing will make sense. You will be lost, continually deceived, and you will say, “I went into a Protestant church; I went into a papist church. Look at them there—they are praying.”

Are they praying? To whom are they praying? They are praying to the one who already has them in his inner pocket through heresy. Take this as a serious sign. You go to receive Holy Communion, and he will not even let you do that. You see an elderly woman who has been sitting there for three hours, yet she cannot move for two minutes. She will not even give her place to another woman holding a child who wants to bring it forward for Holy Communion.

He is the one who stirs up these burning irritations within you—the other one, the one we have been speaking about, whom you fail to take into account. You must arm yourself with attentiveness, prayer, long-suffering, and the rest, so that you may defeat him and also make the way easier for the others who are coming forward. My dear friends, it is essential that we understand these things. When a person does not understand them, he easily falls into Satan’s hands and looks outside himself for someone to blame. If people understood Satan, would they harbor enmity against their human enemies? Someone has robbed you; someone else has treated you with blatant injustice. You would look upon him with much greater compassion: “How could he do such a thing? The devil has clouded his vision.” Perhaps he welcomed it and allowed the devil to do so. Nevertheless, he remains a victim of the devil. Instead of praying for him to be freed from the devil—which would save both me and him—

I seek that man’s destruction. If a person truly understood, whom would he see as the enemy: the man or the devil? He would see the devil as the enemy. “My God, deliver him.” And when God delivers him and Satan departs from within him, he will come and fall at your feet, saying, “Forgive me; I was at fault. I do not know how I could look upon you that way or how I could feel as I did. Yet I am responsible. Take my head if you wish.” We would no longer regard people as enemies, but as victims of demons and even as our benefactors. For when an enemy—the person we call our enemy—falls into the hands of the common enemy, Satan, he immediately becomes our benefactor. Without enemies, we cannot behold the Kingdom of Heaven. It is through our response to our enemies that we shall behold the Kingdom of Heaven,

if we show long-suffering and pray for those people. Seeing this Fall and the designs of Satan, Isaiah writes through the Holy Spirit in the fourteenth chapter: “How have you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who rose at dawn? You have been crushed to the earth, you who trampled the nations. You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the throne; I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.’” But he fell instead. Who is Lucifer? He is the Morning Star, the brightest star of dawn. So we are dealing with a person of immense age. And you know from your own lives

that the more years pass, the more experienced we become. Through our particular experience, we are able to speak with greater certainty and warn those younger than ourselves about dangers. This is why the Old Testament urges us to ask our fathers and our elders, who possess experience, so that we do not fall into traps. People who insist on doing only what they themselves think best are people who fall into traps. We all need counsel, and woe to the person who seeks counsel from no one. God alone has no need of counsel, as Saint Maximus the Confessor says. There is something else a person must know about this third person, this unrelenting enemy: what can he do,

and what can he not do? Is he everywhere present? No. How does this apply to an evil spirit? I want you to know that he is not everywhere present; he exists within place and time. Omnipresence belongs only to the Holy Trinity—to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Neither our Most Holy Theotokos nor the saints nor the angels are everywhere present. Consequently, the demons are not everywhere present either; they do not possess omnipresence. Another question follows from this: if, as we say, they are not everywhere present, but exist within place and time, then how do they act?

Take yesterday’s feast of Saint Demetrios as an example. How many people went to the many churches of Saint Demetrios throughout the world and called upon him? The Protestants might seem justified when they say, “Where is this Saint Demetrios supposed to go first? They call him in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Europe, America, Australia—on all five continents. Where is your Demetrios supposed to go? Have you no shame? Why do you not speak directly to Christ, who is everywhere present?” This reasoning takes hold of some people who reduce everything to human logic and do not understand how these things truly work. I know from experience that Satan will come and cast this intrusive thought into someone’s mind, so I want beforehand to tear apart this net

by which he traps people, as the Church also teaches. He offers them these supposedly rational thoughts. This question arose in the first years of the Church and troubled others as well. On one occasion they asked Saint Athanasius the Great, that pillar of Orthodoxy: “How can we call upon a person, even a saint, if that person is not everywhere present? How can a saint respond to so many people at the same time while existing in only one place?” Do you know what he answered? And this is indeed how it is. Yes, the Most Holy Theotokos is in one place; Saint George and Saint Nicholas are each in one place. But in all the other places where people call upon a saint or the Theotokos, the Lord sends

an angel in that saint’s place. In this way, everyone in need—everyone asking simultaneously or needing to receive help—is served. Do you understand? Therefore, do not let Satan deceive you. If you read the life of Saint Nicholas, you will see in practice what I am telling you. Once Saint Nicholas had gone to help some people who were in danger. At the same time, others who had been unjustly condemned were about to be executed. They were in prison, and dawn was already breaking. They called upon Saint Nicholas, but Saint Nicholas neither heard their voices nor received their message; their prayer did not reach him directly. I do not know whether you understand how prayers to the saints work. Christ therefore alerted him and said,

“Go quickly and help the people in prison who are calling upon you.” Do you not know this account about Saint Nicholas? Let us picture it in a way everyone can understand. I have one telephone here and another telephone right beside it. I want to use this telephone to call the one next to it. How do I do that? The call goes through the exchange. The exchange connects me to that telephone. The two telephones may be side by side, but my call still goes to the exchange, and the exchange connects them so that I can speak. In this case, the exchange is Christ. He is everywhere present and fills all things. He makes the connection; He presses the buttons; He gives notice; He orders all things. Therefore, never be troubled by what you have heard: that even the good spirits, apart from the Holy Trinity, are not everywhere present.

Satan is not everywhere present. If he is tempting me, he is not at that same moment tempting my wife at home, unless he sends another demon to tempt her. He himself would have to leave me and go there. While he is tempting you, he cannot be tempting me; while he is tempting me, he cannot be tempting you. He exists within place and time, as we say. If he sometimes tells you about things happening far away, another demon has acted as an intermediary and brought him the information. I will tell you an incident. A suffering woman had a brother who was possessed by a demon. She took him to the monastery of Saint John. The monastery gave her a cell, and she stayed there with him for about a week.

Every day she tried to force him to go to church, beseeching the saint to free her brother from that evil spirit. Two things happened there, and I will tell you both. One is beside our subject but will be useful to you; the other concerns our subject directly. I will tell you the first one so that you may understand what the devil is. She tried to make her brother pray, but he would not. “George, please say, ‘Holy God.’” “Holy God,” he said. “George, say, ‘Holy Mighty.’” “Holy Mighty.” “George, say, ‘Holy Immortal.’” “Holy Immortal.” “Now say, ‘Have mercy on us,’ George.” Nothing. He would not say, “Have mercy on us.” He acknowledges God; he acknowledges that God is holy and all-holy, but he says, in effect, “Not us.” He remains impenitent.

That is why many who are in Satan’s hands remain unrepentant. Do not be surprised, and do not call them foolish. They are under his influence; as Paul says, they have been taken captive to do his will. The other incident was this. The sister secretly said to a woman who was there, “Go and make some coffee. There is a small bottle of the Agiasmos—the blessing of water—in my bag; pour some into the coffee.” While they were making it, twenty or thirty cells away, he shouted, “Do not put that in! I am not going to drink it.” Who told him? Another little demon told him, “You know, they are about to put the blessing of water in it.” There is the other one; there is this whole company of them, many of them working together.

At the monastery of the Great Lavra, two years ago, a monk who had received mercy through Saint Gregory Palamas undertook to restore a small chapel dedicated to the Saint. It stood on a rock within the monastery’s territory, and he did this out of gratitude to him.

Demons! Demons! How many times they stoned him, and how many times they tore down what he had built! These are recent events that I am telling you about. In any case, through his prayer, through the blessings of water he performed there, and through the Divine Liturgies he served even before completing the chapel, he managed to restrain them. One afternoon he was going to read Vespers and, as I recall, to put the final icon in place. Whole regiments of demons had gathered there. He could see them clearly, and they were ready to tear him to pieces.

Then he cried out, “So, my Saint Gregory, are you going to let them kill me?” At that very moment a whistle was heard. A small demon, which was standing on another rock, signaled to the others: “It seems Saint Gregory is coming. Let us turn into birds and flee to the olive trees.” He is coming. Do you understand? And do not be surprised by what our Lord says. Many people go to mediums to speak with their father, their mother, or their mother-in-law. They summon them and claim that they have spoken with them. With whom did you speak? You spoke with Satan. You did not speak with the soul of your mother or your father. That would be possible only if souls could escape from the place where God has appointed them. Who would remain in Hell? And who would leave Paradise to come to a medium in Kypseli and answer questions?

But we do not know these things, and so that cunning criminal mocks us and gets us into his hands. We ought to feel hatred toward him, but we do not. We feel nothing. Instead, we cooperate with him: whatever he throws at us, we surrender at once and raise our hands. Have you seen what the female Saints do in their icons? They hold a cross in one hand, with the other palm raised like this. Do you know what that means? “I would rather have you crucify me. I will not do what you tell me, what you suggest, what you recommend, what you urge me to do, or what you deceitfully scheme against me. I will not do it.” Have you seen how Byzantine iconography teaches us? “I choose the Cross. Nail me, bury me, bring me to the point of the nail—I will not do this.” That is confession of the faith. But we have not yet resisted, as Paul says, to the very end.

And his angels were cast down with him. The angel fell, the great angel, and the whole host followed after him. Then the Archangel, as Christ said, proclaimed, “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear.” Now—

There are still other workings that a person must understand. When someone is unbaptized, the grace of the Holy Spirit is outside him and Satan is within. When a person is baptized, the grace of the Holy Spirit is within and Satan is outside. As long as someone remains unbaptized, he has the devil within him; he is a dwelling place of Satan. If you wish to confirm this according to the teaching and standard of our Holy Church, go to a priest who knows how to baptize properly. Listen to what he reads, what he exorcises, and how he commands the devil to depart even from the water and from the child’s heart. Then you will understand what this truly means.

Take a Euchologion and, by yourselves in a quiet place, sit down and read it so that you may understand what is involved. And if you wish, look at a Byzantine icon of the Baptism. When Christ enters the water and John places his honorable hand upon His head, you see the dragons fleeing from the water. For demons exist even in the water, in the depths of the earth, in the air—everywhere. A demon is a spirit. It neither sweats nor grows hot, nor does it die from suffocation. And because demons are spirits, their speed is like that of the human spirit. If you have traveled to the four corners of the earth, in a fraction of a second your nous can leap from here to Italy, elsewhere in Europe, America, or Australia. The nous goes there immediately. A spirit moves with that same speed. A demon may be tempting you here now and burning you with its attack.

Even while tempting you, it can leave and be in Constantinople, then leave and be in Australia, then leave and be in Vladivostok—or wherever else. It moves with such speed. It is not a human being that must get up, open the windows, open the door, lock it, and take the road. Satan moves with that kind of speed. That is why you may see a possessed person speaking gently and humbly at one moment, and then it is as though an electrical discharge passes through him: his master has arrived, everything within him changes, and the other behavior begins. A person must know all these things. And what I told you earlier is not my own teaching. It comes from Macarius the Great. He says—and I have often made use of this saying—“Before Baptism, grace remains outside and urges the soul toward what is good, while Satan lurks within its depths.”

He says that while a person is unbaptized, the Holy Spirit urges him from outside, while Satan sits within, in his lair. “But from the hour in which we are born again”—when we are baptized and come forth from the water—“the demon is outside, while grace is within.” Yet many of us have driven grace away again and brought that cloven-footed one back inside ourselves. At Baptism, our Church gave us grace through the confession of our devout parents and the confession of our godfather or godmother, our sponsor. For we confessed then and said, “Do you renounce Satan and unite yourself to Christ?”

But when we grew older, things changed. We wanted neither Christ nor the Church, and we joined ourselves to Satan, who permits us everything, while we cast grace aside. And grace, which alone places no burden upon a person, withdraws. Just as it comes when a person desires it, so it departs when he no longer desires it. A spark certainly remains within, but it is covered by ashes and other debris. Metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession are then needed to clear away the ashes and filth, uncover that spark, and allow the Holy Spirit to breathe upon it, rekindling it until it once again becomes a blazing fire. I remember once finding myself in a mountainous region of the Peloponnese during the years of the Occupation.

I was given hospitality in a home that was extremely poor. There I saw yet another way of being economical. In the evening, the grandmother buried the fire beneath the ashes in the corner where the hearth stood. In the morning, I watched her brush away the ashes and find a few glowing coals. She placed some dry twigs over them and blew until a fire sprang up, all to save a single match. This is exactly what happens spiritually. Sins accumulate over the coal that Christ kindles in the depths of every human being. But when a person repents and makes Holy Confession—

those sins depart and are lifted away from that hidden corner. The coal then remains, and the Holy Spirit rekindles it. Once again the person grows strong and becomes red-hot, and Satan cannot touch him. For Satan wants a person not to be burning with divine fire, but frozen cold. This is also what happens in our own Church.

A great part of our Church is often frozen by Satan, from the clergy all the way down to the candle stand, the chanter, and the rest, because we do not approach the Holy Eucharist. We do not come forward to receive Holy Communion, to commune with the fire of divinity and become red-hot, so that Satan cannot get us into his hands. We do not do this. We do not receive Holy Communion; we go merely for the antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after the Divine Liturgy. Some have even eaten breakfast and take the antidoron home for the following day.

On that day, they receive nothing at all. Consequently, such a person remains frozen. He is like the ice cubes we keep in the refrigerator—what can they do? They can do nothing. But when a person struggles and, with God’s help, approaches the Mystery—unworthily, of course, yet still approaches—he becomes red-hot and is united with Christ. Plug an iron into the socket. It grows hot; it can burn you, press your clothes, and do its work. Unplug it, and cockroaches go and build nests inside it. While it remains plugged in, no cockroach, bedbug, or anything else can enter. Such is the Christian. Satan does not mind if a person goes to church; he is not afraid of those who merely attend. What troubles him is that a person might become worthy to receive Holy Communion. That is what pains him. For when Satan was asked by Saint John of Bostra, “What do you fear from Christians?” do you know what he said?

He said, “I fear one water, one blood, and one piece of wood.” By these he meant Baptism, the Blood of Christ, and the precious Cross. These are what he fears. But we neither know these things nor wish to learn them. That is why Satan finds us frozen, gets us into his hands, and devours us. I could tell you something else about this. There was once a foolish rich man who had no children but kept dogs. He had a special cook for the ten or so guard dogs he owned. The cook prepared their food in special vessels, stirring the choicest morsels in a great cauldron with a large ladle. Drawn by the smell, the dogs crowded around the cauldron. But the cauldron was boiling. The cook would ladle out their food, yet they never learned—

to test it by smelling first. As soon as one thrust its muzzle toward the food, it sprang back like a bullet. Then the dogs ran around it, sniffing, whining, and waiting for it to cool. None could put its tongue into it because it burned. When it had cooled, they settled down and ate it. This is the Christian. As long as he remains spiritually hot, the devil can only drool over him. The Christian breathes flames from his mouth, especially when he frequently approaches the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist and receives Holy Communion. But how can we approach frequently? We do not make Holy Confession; we do not fast; fashion comes first; we have endless other concerns; we steal, lie, cheat, and engage in all sorts of things. How can we approach? Consequently, through Satan’s method, we grow cold. These too are matters to which a person must pay attention. Now listen to a few more sayings of holy people. For example—

Saint Basil the Great says, “The devil is evil and the creator of every wickedness.” I repeat: “The devil is evil and the creator of every wickedness.” “And just as abundance follows what is good”—when you possess the good spirit, there is abundance—“so envy follows the devil.” Thus, he says, you will be wretched and ill-fated. Nothing in this world will bring you joy or satisfaction when you have dealings with that cunning Satan. Saint Maximus the Confessor gives us another fearsome saying: “The nous is a holy place and a temple of God.”

The human nous is holy, a temple and dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Yet within it, “the demons, having laid waste the soul through impassioned logismoi—intrusive thoughts—set up the idol of sin.” Into the nous, into this temple of God, Satan shoots fiery logismoi. The Apostle Paul calls them “fiery darts.” He shoots them in and defiles the nous until he can establish himself there, take possession, and remain. This is why spiritual struggle is necessary. A person’s nous is like an unfenced plot of land. Satan throws rubbish into it, just as neighbors toss in empty milk cartons and dump everything there.

A person is called to struggle: to pick these things up and throw them out. Do not leave them there; do not accept them. Throw out every logismos, every intrusive thought. If you see something approaching from over there and realize it is about to pass before you, lower your head beforehand. Do not let him throw anything into you. Do not let him place or write anything there. Do not let him engrave anything upon you, because he will swallow you. He keeps striking and striking until he brings you down. It must not be so. Instead, what happened to the Apostles must happen within us: “They were pierced to the heart.” How does this happen? They were pierced by truths. The Greek verb means to prick, to prick repeatedly, and finally to pierce deeply. To prick means to draw blood—yet here one is pierced by the truth, through prayer and all the other spiritual means, until the desires are subdued, the fiery darts of Satan are extinguished, and one succeeds in overcoming him.

How do things stand so far? Still, with the grace of our Most Holy Theotokos, we may need to give another talk like this, so that we may gain a more correct understanding of this third person. I pray that Christ our God will protect us from him and from his snares. Amen.

άγγελοι τον υμνούσαν. Άρα υπήρχε ο αγγελικός κόσμος. Ενδιάμεσα μεταξύ του αγγελικού κόσμου και της δημιουργίας του μεικτού, δηλαδή ανθρώπου μετά πνεύματος και ύλης, εκεί έχει γίνει η πτώση. Τώρα, λοιπόν, από αυτό βγάζουμε τα χρόνια του Σατανά. Τα χρόνια του πρέπει να είναι περίπου 7.500 χρόνια, του Σατανά τα χρόνια. Έχουμε 5.508 χρόνια, κατά το εβραϊκό ημερολόγιο, από κτίσεως, από Αδάμ μέχρι Χριστού. Έχουμε 2.000 χρόνια τώρα περίπου, φτάνουμε 7.500 χρόνια. Τώρα πόσα χρόνια πίσω είναι από Αδάμ μέχρι που έφτιαχνε ήσαν οι άγγελοι που υμνούσαν, όπως γράφει ο Ιώβ στο 38, δεν ξέρω πόσα ήταν. 7.500 είναι σίγουρα. 7.500 χρόνια. Τώρα πόσο ακόμη είναι, 200, 300, 500, 1.000, δεν ξέρω. Θα μου πείτε: «Τι ενδιαφέρεστε για τα χρόνια του Σατανά; Εδώ εμείς θα κρύβουμε τα δικά μας· φτάνουν 39 και ποτέ πάμε 40. Για ποια δουλειά να μιλάμε τώρα για τα χρόνια του Σατανά;» Έχει τον σκοπό του αυτό που το λέγω. Γιατί πολλοί δεν αναγνωρίζουμε την εμπειρία του. Δεν έχουμε να κάνουμε, αγαπητοί μου, με κάποια κοπελίτσα, διότι έβαλε μίνι, έβαλε το αρσενικό παντελόνι και κυκλοφορεί και τα μαλλιά, και πήρε και ένα τσιγάρο με πίπα και τα μαλλιά. Τι είναι αυτά που λέτε;

«Στην εκκλησία του χωριού που περάσαμε ήταν ένας σατανάς επάνω», λέει. «Βλέπεις εδώ τι είναι;» «Και εδώ», του λέει, «ποιοι είναι;» «Στην εκκλησία», λέει, «δεν προσεύχεται κανένας. Εκεί που πάμε, τους φυλάει ένας όλους. Εδώ είναι ένα ανδρόγυνο που προσεύχεται, γι' αυτό έχουμε μαζευτεί όλοι αυτοί οι σατανάδες γύρω». Αυτό πρέπει να μας δίνει πίστη. Κλαίει το παιδί και με ανησυχεί· θα το βγάλουμε έξω. Σοβαρά; Α, θα το βγάλουμε έξω, μα θα χάσουμε και την προβατίνα. Όταν πηγαίνεις στο τρόλεϊ και το τρόλεϊ βροντάει και φωνάζει, εσύ ψιλοκουβεντιάζεις με την άλλη, για να κατηγορείς την άλλη, δεν ακούς τίποτα από τον θόρυβο των τροχών. Τώρα ακούς; Ποιος είναι αυτός που σε βάζει και ακούς τώρα; Είναι ο άλλος, για να σε βγάλει έξω. Και ξέρεις εσύ πού πάει ο σατανάς και τσιμπάει το παιδί και κλαίει εκείνο; Το ξέρεις ή δεν το ξέρεις;

Τότε αυτός φώναξε: «Ώστε, Άγιέ μου Γρηγόριε, θα με αφήσεις να με σκοτώσουνε αυτοί;» Και εκείνη τη στιγμή ακούστηκε ένα σφύριγμα και ένα διαβολάκι μικρό, άλλο ήταν εκεί σε έναν βράχο, και τους κάνει νόημα: «Έρχεται, καθώς φαίνεται, ο Άγιος Γρηγόριος. Πουλιά γινήκαμε, φύγαμε στις ελιές». Αυτός έρχεται. Καταλάβατε; Μη θαυμάζετε τούτο που λέει και ο κύριός μας. Πολλοί πάνε στα μέντιουμ να μιλήσουν με τον πατέρα τους και με τη μητέρα τους και με την πεθερά τους. Φωνάζουν τους και μίλησαν, λέει. Με ποιον; Με τον σατανά μίλησες, δεν μίλησες με την ψυχή της μητέρας σου ούτε του πατέρα σου. Άλλο μόνο, αν μπορούσαν να αποδράσουν από εκεί που τους έχει ο Θεός. Ποιος θα καθόταν στην κόλαση; Ποιος και ποιος από τον παράδεισο θα έρχονταν στην Κυψέλη, στα μέντιουμ, να απαντήσει;

Την ημέρα εκείνη δεν παίρνουν τίποτα. Κατά συνέπεια, αυτός ο άνθρωπος είναι παγωμένος. Είναι όπως κρατάμε εμείς τα παγάκια στο ψυγείο· τι να κάνουν αυτά; Δεν μπορούν να κάνουν. Όταν ο άνθρωπος αγωνίζεται και προσέρχεται, με τη βοήθεια του Θεού, αναξίως βέβαια, αλλά προσέρχεται στο μυστήριο, τότε πυρακτούται και γίνεται ένα με τον Χριστό. Βάζετε το σίδερο στην πρίζα. Πυρακτούται, καίγεστε, σιδερώνεστε, κάνετε τη δουλειά σας. Βγάζοντάς το από την πρίζα, πάνε οι κατσαρίδες και φτιάχνουνε φωλιές μέσα. Όταν το έχεις στην πρίζα, ούτε κατσαρίδα, ούτε κοριός, ούτε τίποτα. Αυτός είναι ο χριστιανός. Ο σατανάς τον άνθρωπο τον θέλει· ας πηγαίνει στην εκκλησία, δεν τον ενδιαφέρει αν πάει στην εκκλησία. Δεν φοβάται αυτούς που πάνε στην εκκλησία. Μην φτάσει αξίως και κοινωνήσει· αυτό τον πειράζει, αυτό. Γιατί όταν ερωτήθη ο σατανάς από τον Άγιο Ιωάννη τον Βοστρινό, «Ξέρετε τι φοβάται από τους χριστιανούς;», ξέρετε τι είπε;
