Summary

Christ and His Church have faced opposition from the beginning, fulfilling Simeon’s prophecy that Christ would be a sign spoken against. God answered the Church’s prayer by sending an angel who broke Peter’s chains, led him past the guards, and opened the iron gate. Believers are encouraged to place Christ first, seek the guidance of their guardian angel, accept responsibility for their sins, and respond to trials with repentance and trust.

As a continuation of all the lessons we have given, I would like to add something practical, so to speak. We shall see how the people of the Early Church dealt with those who were far from Christ, and also how a person may be benefited when he keeps in mind certain means that Christ offers and grants to him, though most of us know nothing about them. We find ourselves in a difficult situation, for example, and do not know how to cope with it, even though man is all-powerful through God. Indeed, even the Christian does not know how to act; he reacts convulsively and often loses control. He may even lose his health, or his very life, because many people, in their despair, when they see everything closing in around them for evil, lose hope and take their own lives. Christianity has been persecuted from its earliest days. As you know, it is still persecuted to this very day, because Christ Himself is still persecuted today. Christ is the One of whom Simeon the God-receiver spoke—then, now, and unto the ages—when he said to our Most Holy Theotokos at the Meeting of the Lord:

She had gone to fulfill the forty-day observance, and he turned toward the little Child whom the Theotokos held in her arms and said, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rising of many, and as a sign that will be spoken against.” This was indeed fulfilled from the very first days. The event I am about to tell you is taken from the Acts of the Apostles, and it is connected with today: the Church commemorates this event today, on the sixteenth of January. It concerns the Apostle Peter. I shall read it to you and then relate it

in simpler words, from the twelfth chapter of Acts, beginning with verse one: “Now about that time Herod the king stretched out his hands to harm some from the Church.” Herod the king, it says, arrested certain people belonging to the Church of Christ and mistreated them. “Then he killed James the brother of John with the sword.” He murdered James, the brother of John, putting him to the sword. “And because he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to seize Peter also.” Herod saw that the Jews were pleased by the persecution of these Christians, so, wishing to win their favor, he decided to arrest Peter as well. You know, even today many people are sacrificed to this same malice. People often condemn others, by words or deeds, simply to gain the favor of certain persons, to appear good in their eyes and extract some advantage from them, whether through pride or self-interest. This base tactic has always existed: to win the favor of the powerful,

a man destroys others. Today he may slander them or accuse them. In other words, to gain standing in their eyes and obtain some benefit—material, personal, prideful, or whatever it may be—he destroys other people. Sadly, this happens among men throughout the course of life. Now it was during the days of Unleavened Bread that Peter was arrested. These were the days of Pascha, as we would say. During Pascha no executions took place because of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. It lasted eight days, from Saturday to Saturday. “And when he had seized him, he put him in prison.” So he arrested Peter and placed him in prison, evidently intending to keep him there until the days of Unleavened Bread had passed, and then bring him before the people in some amphitheater and have him killed, in order to please the Jews. “And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after Pascha to bring him out to the people.” He therefore handed Peter over to sixteen soldiers. All these precautions, of course, were meant to ensure that Peter could not escape. Four squads of four make sixteen soldiers. So Peter was in prison, guarded by sixteen soldiers.

“Peter was therefore kept in prison.” Peter, it says, was imprisoned. Yet some people now found themselves without him. Peter was their leader, their foremost man, as we might say. He had lived close to Christ, knew many things, and told the people many things. Therefore, for those first people who had accepted Christ and been baptized, he was a person whom it was essential to preserve. “Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the Church.” The others did not give up. They might have been unable to reach Herod or find some influential person

—I do not know what means they might otherwise have used—to secure Peter’s release or acquittal. But they took refuge in a weapon of their own. They withdrew and began to pray. The word used here is significant: their prayer was constant and fervent. They did not merely say, “Lord, help him,” or recite one “Our Father,” or offer some brief prayer. They prayed continually, asking God for help from above. For many people believe that help must be found beside them or within themselves—in their wallet, in their own ability, or in the influential people they happen

to know. Thank you.

This, my dear friends, is a path that most of us do not use, and so we suffer in our lives. There is tremendous anxiety throughout humanity because people have no connection with this path; indeed, they shut it out entirely. I was speaking somewhere the other day, and we mentioned the story of a father who took his young son along to stand watch while he committed a theft. He placed the boy at a crossroads and told him, “Watch from here. If you happen to see anything, warn me—whistle or make some noise. Keep watch on this road, this road, and this road,” pointing to all the roads around them. The little boy said to his father, “Father, is there no other road?” “No, my child; just watch the ones I have told you about.” “But is there no road from above?”

“Is there no possibility that someone may see you from above, Father?” The father stopped and abandoned the theft, because the little boy had shown him that there was another road. The roads you see are not the only ones. Sadly, this is what happens to us—to most of us. People suffer because they do not know this other road. I can understand someone suffering when he is far from Christ, never makes the sign of the Cross, and is indifferent to everything. Such a person will look to his own people, to his political connections, to his cleverness, or to his wallet—whatever may help him escape some difficult situation: a trial, persecution, an accusation, an illness, or anything else. But there is another road, and people do not know it.

Do you know what Paul says in the last verse of the sixth chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews? He says that the Christian has his anchor in heaven. To make a ship or any vessel secure, one ordinarily resorts to its anchor. The anchor is not dropped into the ship’s hold, but cast outside, so that it grips the seabed. Another may be cast from the bow to hold the ship in place and keep it from being shattered against a rock when danger comes. The Christian, too, travels like a ship and must cast his anchor. But the Christian’s anchor must be cast upward, because Christ is there. A person can take hold of Him and be kept secure. We have, it says, “an anchor in heaven, sure and steadfast.” Who knows this? Who makes use of it?

Who calls upon Him? Life has become so full of anxiety because the people of this world do not know this secret. Christians know it, yet sadly only a few of them put it into practice and make use of it. Those first believers were still like children in kindergarten as far as Christianity was concerned, and yet they knew that they could accomplish something. And what was that “something”? Peter’s deliverance. They understood the situation correctly, and Peter himself knew what awaited him from the moment he was arrested, since James had been killed only the day before. They knew what awaited him: humanly speaking, he was lost, and there was no way for him to escape. So they took refuge in their own weapon. They entered a house, shut themselves in, and began to pray.

Thus, it says, constant and fervent prayer was offered for Peter by the Church. The Church is not walls or stones or a building; the Church is the people. And the result was this:

“And when Herod was about to bring him out,” the period of Unleavened Bread had evidently passed, and the day had come when Peter was to be executed—let us say, the following morning. I do not know what means Herod intended to use to do away with Peter. “That night,” on the eve of the appointed day, Peter was “sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains.” Here we see something from the opposite side. Those outside were struggling in prayer, asking God to help in this desperate situation. But Peter, inside the prison, knew what awaited him.

Yet Scripture presents him as having the courage to sleep. That is no small thing. Few people have such complete trust that sleep can come to them at moments of such danger. But Peter had the courage to sleep there among beasts, between those soldiers. Only when a person trusts in God can he peacefully accept what comes, entrusting his cause to Him and believing that He will act in some way. Perhaps from his own experience, Peter himself writes in his epistle, “Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” Cast upon Him, he says, all your concern, your need, and all your striving. Put your trust in Him, “for He cares for you.” In other words: I sleep, while He takes care of how He will help me—in my need, my trial, my work, my journey, my difficult circumstance, the slander against me, or my persecution. He keeps watch over it all, as though saying, “Go and lie down. Rest and be at peace. I am here; I am watching over you.” When you trust another person, you can go and lie down, rest a little, and close your eyes. Something similar is happening here. Peter clearly had such trust in Christ that he was unconcerned. And let us not forget that Peter was married.

Marital and family responsibilities make a person even more distressed and anxious: What will happen to my family? How will my wife manage as a widow? How will she cope with the children? The same is true in reverse if the wife is the one who faces suffering and must leave the rest of the family behind. The concern grows and the burden becomes heavier, so that a person cannot even close his eyes. Yet Peter had the courage to sleep. Thus, at that very moment, he was asleep between two soldiers and bound with chains. And those chains were certainly not little watch chains of the sort we men wear; they were thick chains, strong enough to hold him. “And guards before the door were keeping the prison.”

It says that still more guards were stationed at the door. In other words, Peter was completely secured. There was no possibility of escape. At that very moment, then, Peter was asleep, and Herod was at ease, certain that his prisoner was safely guarded. But God hastened to act in His own way: “And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the room.” An angel of the Lord appeared inside the prison, and light shone forth. When an angel appears, would darkness appear with him? No, light shone forth. “And striking Peter on the side, he raised him up, saying”—he struck him and said, “Get up.”

“Arise quickly”—get up at once—“and his chains fell off his hands,” for he could not easily have risen while he was bound. The angel released him from his chains. Here is another lesson: the chains fell from Peter’s hands, and the man was set free. Many times, whether through our own carelessness, pride, and supposed wisdom, or because others bring us into difficulty, we find ourselves bound in chains and unable to move forward. When everything closes in around us for evil, as I said earlier, and there is no human solution, another power—a power from above—can send an angel to resolve the matter. I do not know whether your age has yet allowed you to hear of the many people who have escaped even from before the muzzles of a firing squad. At the last moment, behold, an angel appears in some manner and snatches them from the jaws of death. Other people were about to lose all their property, when at the last moment a law was enacted that saved their possessions and allowed them to remain in their homes. There are countless such cases in which everything appeared—and truly was—about to close in upon someone, yet something was found

that halted the disaster and transformed it from black to white, from darkness into light, just as the angel’s presence did here. The prison was immersed in darkness, but he transformed the darkness into light. There is always an angel for the affairs of our lives. You have much of your earthly life still before you; I do not know what God will do.

Do not forget what I am telling you, for it is not my own teaching. From my personal experience, I can tell you that this is not merely true—not ten percent true, nor fifty percent true, but a million percent true. Never despair in any difficult moment of your life. Place your trust in God.

Thank you. He has the power. What He will do, I do not know.

It may seem strange to you. Many times we have created situations—I do not know whether I have mentioned this to you on another occasion—that perfectly fit the saying, “A precipice ahead and a torrent behind.” There seems to be no solution, because of the way things have turned out. I remember one such case here in Athens. Years ago, I was speaking at Saint Artemios. At the end, a young woman stayed behind—not fifteen years old, of course, but perhaps twenty-five or thirty; I do not know exactly. Weeping, she told me, “Tonight you were speaking about me. But for me there is no salvation, no solution. That is how impossible my problem is.” I said, “But did you not hear?”

“God has the power to resolve even the most difficult things. Did you not learn in school that when Alexander the Great stood before the Gordian Knot, which no one could untie, he drew his sword and said, ‘What cannot be untied can be cut’? That is Christ.” “Yes, but what about me?” she asked. “For you too. The very fact that you are still alive and your chest still draws breath is a guarantee that you still have the opportunity to live. And He will bring you out of this difficult situation.” We walked together for about a kilometer, which was roughly the distance to my house. All the way she spoke and I answered; she wept, and I kept trying to encourage her.

Finally, I said, “Listen to me. Just as an experiment, if you like, follow your own reasoning wherever you think it leads. But tonight, in your prayer, say to the Lord: ‘Lord, as far as I can see, there is no salvation for me, no way for me to be freed from this sin.’” She had become entangled in a sin from which she could not free herself. She asked me, “Shall I tell you the whole story?” “I do not want you to tell me. I want you to do just one thing. Tonight, say to Christ, even though your reason tells you otherwise: ‘Panagopoulos told me this. If it is true, help me.’ Say nothing else.” So I left her there, weeping and lamenting, and she went away. The following Wednesday, after I had spoken and was leaving, she came up to me again in the street. I confess that I had forgotten all about it. “A miracle, Mr. Panagopoulos!” she said. “Glory to God,” I replied, “if a miracle has happened.” “Shall I tell you?” she asked. “Do not tell me anything. I do not want to know. It would not be right for me to learn the details of your life.”

What mattered was that she had now learned through experience that things are not always as our reason tells us. Human reason says that one plus one equals two. But for Christ, one plus one may be three, or five, or a thousand. People cannot understand this. Let me add a brief aside. They caught a woman in adultery and brought her to Christ. They said to Him, “We caught this woman in the very act. The Law says that we must kill her. What do You say?” What could He answer, yes or no? That was the answer they were waiting for. But He turned to them and said, “Hypocrites, why are you testing Me? Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” They were left speechless. See how Christ deals with such a situation. It is not simply yes or no. What could He say? They thought, “We have caught Him and made our accusation. If He answers one way, He opposes the Mosaic Law; if He answers the other, He overturns what He Himself teaches. So now we will trap Him.”

Does one plus one always equal two for Christ? Never say that. Christ is not confined by human logic. We need logic to keep ourselves from falling into a ditch, to stop us from putting our hand into an electric current, and so forth. But when you come to a difficult moment, ask Christ for strength, and you will see miracles in your life. Remember another occasion: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?” That too was a cunning question. Go in peace and joy. Glorify God, and be careful from now on.

“Let me tell you,” she insisted. “I do not want you to tell me anything,” I replied, and I left her. I did not know what had happened, only that something had happened. I did not want to sit there discussing her life and hearing all the details. It was enough that the miracle had occurred and had given her an experience that would surely teach her in other areas of life as well. We can destroy ourselves because one person copies another person’s faults, and those of us who go astray unfortunately have the pride to spread our weaknesses to others by talking about them. Or, if we choose, we can help one another. That is exactly what happened in this case. Eight years passed. Then one day, by coincidence, one of her relatives came to eat at our table with my wife and me. I had completely lost touch with the young woman. After we had eaten, the lady called me aside and asked, “Would you like to learn something?”

I said, “Is it spiritually beneficial? Would it do me any good to know?” She replied, “Whether you want to or not, I am going to tell you about that case from years ago.” “I do not want to know,” I said. “I closed that matter long ago. Why should I learn about it now?” “You need to know,” she replied. What, then, had happened? This separated woman lived in a house with her sister and brother-in-law. They rented out rooms, and she had fallen into sin with a driver who rented a room there. When she heard about Christ and heard that what she was doing was wrong, she came to herself. She wanted to guard herself, but by then she could not. The man blackmailed her, threatening to expose her. She could not evict him; under the rent-control laws of that time, he remained there for fifty drachmas. A precipice ahead and a torrent behind. She was forced to submit to something she neither desired nor wanted nor accepted, and so she remained trapped in sin. On the night when she prayed,

this is what happened the next morning. The man took his car and drove up Syngrou Avenue. Near the column of Olympian Zeus, he collided with another vehicle. He panicked, jumped out, abandoned the car, and never returned to the house—not for his suitcases, his camp bed, or anything else. She was freed from that sin and was even able to rent the room for a higher price. That is Christ. It was a solution she had never expected and could never have conceived in her nous, her spiritual intellect. And the angel said to Peter, “Gird yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. Then the angel said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” In other words, “Put on your garment and come with me.” Now, as you can understand, Peter thought he was dreaming, because he could never have imagined

that such a miracle could happen in this situation. Nor did he know what was happening outside—that others were praying for him. We have a saying: “A hungry man dreams of bakeries.” Peter thought it was something like that, as the passage says a little later: he followed the angel out, but did not know that what was being done by the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. He had not yet realized that this was reality and not a vision. He thought he was seeing a vision there where he had lain down.

“When they had passed the first and second guard posts, they came to the iron gate.” The angel went ahead. They passed the two guard posts, went out into the courtyard, and reached the great iron gate of the prison, which led into the city. Once that gate opened, they would be free to enter the city. “It opened to them of its own accord. And they went out and passed along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.” The angel was in front. When the angel goes before us, every obstacle is overcome.

Saint Kosmas the Aetolian preached to our people when they were under Turkish rule, traveling from town to town and village to village. Every morning, before beginning the work of that day, he would turn toward the East and say, “Lord, go before me today as well.” That was his prayer. He offered no other prayer: “Go before me today as well.” In the present case, it would mean: “Send Your angel before us today as well, to deliver us, to arrive ahead of us, or to guide us in every good work.” Yet this is the one thing we do not ask. We always put God last.

We do not put Him first. As I said earlier, the only One we do not consult, and the only door we do not knock upon, is Christ’s. A person puts Christ last. We often hear this in cases of serious illness: “We went to Europe, we tried everything, and nothing worked. Now we have turned to the Church.” The things of the Church come last. Is this not a picture of our own lives? When a person does not put Christ before him, his efforts amount to zero, and their results are zero. If you write down several zeros—say, two zeros—and then put a one at the end, what happens? The zeros remain zeros.

But put the one in front, and the zeros become one hundred. That is the measure of man. These are his affairs, these are his needs, and this is the person who needs help. “Lord, send me an angel today as well, so that You may guide me rightly.” If we feel ashamed—and surely we ought to feel ashamed—of certain days in our lives, it is because whatever we did, whether with our tongue or with our flesh, we did in the absence of the angel. For if we had possessed this fear, realizing that the things we say, the things we agree to, the things we steal, our fornication, our mockery, and everything else are done before our angel, we would not have done them.

We do not see the angel, though we ought to be aware of him and ask him to go before us. Every person has an angel, a guardian of his soul. We often express this incorrectly by saying, “He had a Saint watching over him.” There may be an accident, a collision, in which only mangled metal remains, yet the people emerge completely unharmed. How did it happen? People say, “He had an angel,” or, “He had a Saint watching over him.” That is indeed what happened. People say this in difficult moments, but they do not believe it throughout their lives, though doing so would greatly benefit them. Before I read this passage, I would drown in a spoonful of water. Since reading it, I have preached it so that others may hear it as well throughout the thirty years I have been doing this work. At the same time, I have tried to apply it to myself, especially in difficult moments,

though I should do so even when things are not difficult, because a person is never able to judge everything correctly and do what is right by himself, without a guide. He must always have Christ as his guide. So I say, “Send Your angel. You see that things are difficult. I am at fault; the others are not.” Never shift the responsibility to someone else. Even if someone harms you, troubles you, dishonors you, or treats you unjustly, it is not an accidental event. Our sin has given Satan the right to do this to us. The other person is simply an instrument of Satan through whom we are chastened. That is how you must approach it if you want good results. Do not say, “You know how wicked she is, what a gossip she is,” or, “He is a scoundrel.” Why say this? What good comes from it? Through this difficult person, you are being compelled to kneel, to go and venerate, and to ask Christ to send His angel, just as those first Christians did.

They prayed for Peter, and God heard them and sent an angel. The angel broke his chains, took him out from among those beasts, led him unseen past the two guard posts, and even opened the gate for him automatically. Perhaps these things seem strange to you. Have you never gone to a government ministry or a bank where the door opens by itself as soon as you approach? You have seen it. You press something, and the door opens on its own. Once you pass through, it closes again. I remember that recently I was abroad. There was snow outside, although it was September, and we entered an enclosed garage to drive the car out.

I said to the priest, “Shall I get out and open the door?” He replied, “No, stay where you are.” As the car slowed, I asked, “Who is going to open it for us?” There was a metal strip on the ground. When the wheel rolled over it and pressed it, I saw the door ten meters ahead begin to open by itself, almost welcoming us to pass through. The same thing happened when we returned. Human beings have made such things. We see these things materially, but God can do them spiritually. The prison gate, the passage says, opened automatically, by itself, and then closed again. In the morning, pandemonium broke loose. They searched for Peter, but Peter was nowhere to be found. Everyone was interrogated. The whole place was in an uproar. There was tremendous confusion that morning. How had he escaped? Where had he gone? Everything was locked. How had he left? In any case, the result was that the angel brought him out and led him one street farther,

to make sure he was safely away from that district, where Herod had his headquarters, his prisons, his guards, and everything else—for prisons cannot exist without guards. This is also a lesson for us. If we can personally guide someone to safety, we should not avoid the effort; we should guide him ourselves. Many people merely say, “Go there and find such-and-such a person. There is a priest there; go and make your confession to him,” and so forth. But the person will not go. And even if he sets out, Satan may deceive him somehow and turn him back. If you can go yourself, go with him and personally take him safely to where he needs to be. Many times, we simply give instructions. People say, “Father, send me your prayer.” No. If you can go yourself, then go, even if it costs you some of your time and even if it tires you.

Accompany that person so that he may safely reach the place where he needs to go, whether it is the Church or somewhere he must go for some personal matter. Be sure of this; let us not neglect it. The angel did this here. He did not merely bring Peter out; he also led him to safety. He took him one street farther and left him there. When Peter found himself in those surroundings, then, “coming to himself,” he regained his senses. Until that moment he had thought he was dreaming, that he was seeing a vision. And indeed, it seems like a dream for doors to open by themselves and chains to fall away on their own. It truly surpasses understanding and human reason. Peter said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel”

“and delivered me from the hand of Herod and from everything the Jewish people were expecting.” They were waiting to see him the next day as though he were a Paschal lamb. “Now I understand,” he said. Now he had come to himself and understood. Sometimes something similar happens to us: something entirely unexpected occurs after our situation seemed to have closed in around us with no possible good outcome,

It seems strange to us; it seems unreal. Many times the doctors had given us no hope, and that truly was what medical science said. Yet now you find yourself at home, eating with your family and back at work. It seems unreal that this is actually happening, since they had even made the funeral arrangements and people were waiting outside to bury you. Then you come to your senses.

So it was with Peter here. “Now,” he says, “I understand; now I realize it. No, this is not unreal; it is reality.” And although there are many things in our lives that we cannot comprehend as they unfold, when they are in Christ’s hands, afterward we taste the good fruits of His actions. “And when he had considered this”—when he had come to himself—“he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was called Mark.” This was evidently Mark the Evangelist. “There many were gathered together and were praying.” A great many people, it says, were gathered inside that night, praying. “And when he knocked at the door of the gateway,” he knocked at the outer door in the middle of the night. Those inside heard, and a young servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.

She ran out to the door to see who was knocking, and she asked who it was. She did not open the door. That is a fine detail, and it teaches us something, though we often fail to pay attention to such things and suffer harm as a result. “A servant girl named Rhoda came to answer,” and she asked who was there. “And recognizing Peter’s voice”—she knew Peter’s voice. Peter was outside knocking, and inside she had heard what they were asking for in prayer. Now she saw that the very thing they were praying for was standing outside the door.

She was completely overcome. She had not expected it and did not know what to do. “Because of her joy, she did not open the gate.” She left the man standing outside and ran in to tell them that Peter was at the door. “She ran in and announced that Peter was standing before the gate.” She ran inside and told them that Peter was outside the door. You can imagine how this sounded to those people. They were inside praying, yet “they said to her, ‘You are mad!’” “You have lost your mind, my child.” That was their answer. This may seem strange to us and may even make us smile, because we too often pray without fully believing that an answer to our prayer can actually come. That is exactly what happened there. “What are you praying for?” “We are praying for Peter.” “Well, Peter is here.” Then why do you tell the girl that she has lost her mind?

That is how they were, how we are, and, unfortunately, how people will continue to be. “You are mad!” But she kept insisting that it was so. “No, Peter is outside.” When they saw how persistently the girl insisted, others went out into the courtyard, toward the outer gate, to see what was happening. Yet some continued to say, “It is his angel.” Some of them said that it must be Peter’s angel standing outside. In any case, Peter kept knocking. They too finally heard the knocking and had to go out. “But Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.” This too may have been an act of divine providence. You know, just as a person cannot receive sorrow all at once, neither can he receive joy all at once.

People can die upon suddenly hearing terrible news, which is why we tell it to them gradually. In the same way, sudden joyful news can also cause death. Here, their initial disbelief served as a kind of preparation, and so no one came to harm. Imagine it: the young girl had gone outside, while the others were inside chanting and praying, and then Peter suddenly appeared at the door. They would have been stunned! There may have been elderly people among them, frail people, people with heart conditions; they might have died from the shock and fright. They may not even have heard the knock at the door. Perhaps the girl had been outside playing, or somewhere nearby—I do not know—and heard the door, so she went over to it.

If she had suddenly brought Peter in and presented him at the door, they would have been stunned, and someone might have come to harm. Many times, the things that happen are also acts of divine providence. In any case, both aspects of this account are useful to us. The result was that everyone now gathered around Peter, eager to hear how it had happened. Peter raised his hand—“motioning to them with his hand”—and said, “Be quiet; sit down, and I will tell you.” He quieted and calmed them and had them sit down, despite all their exclamations and everything else they must have been saying—“Glory to God,” and the usual things we human beings say. He calmed them and told them how the Lord had brought him out of prison.

Then, of course, he asked them to tell James what had happened, if they could notify him that Peter was free and safely outside, and to tell everyone else they knew so that they would not worry. “And he departed and went to another place.” After he had thanked them, so to speak, and said what he needed to say, he left; that is, he withdrew from the danger. And as I said earlier, I mention here what followed: “As soon as it was day, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers.” The soldiers must have been shouting, “Where is he? He was on your watch—or yours! You must have been bribed. You must have let him out.” They could not understand it. How had he escaped? Everything was locked. One soldier must have begun blaming another.

So there was no small disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. The next day Herod searched for him. “Bring him out,” he said, for he had arranged everything we spoke about. But when he could not find him, he questioned the guards and ordered that they be put to death. Herod killed all the soldiers because he had lost his victim. Then he left Judea and went down to Caesarea, where he remained, because the Jews had been expecting Peter the next day. They would ask, “What happened, Herod? Where is Peter? We are waiting for him.” Herod was deeply troubled and apparently left until tempers had settled and he could decide how to deal with the malice of the Jews. My dear friends, at first this may seem like merely one incident among many. But consider its teaching.

Many things in Peter’s story relate directly to our own lives. We too find ourselves in difficult circumstances. We too are often bound in chains by sin. We too can find ourselves trapped by our surroundings and unable to cope. Some people, because they do not know that there is another door they can knock on—a door through which their troubles can be resolved—even go so far as to take their own lives. That is the tragedy. I have brought this account forward for two reasons. First, since the Church proclaims it, there is a reason for it, and it must be brought to light for those who do not read it. Second, we must learn the power of prayer.

There is no one who does not pass through difficult times. A thousand and one devils surround us every day: troubles with our family, our work, our flesh, the world, and everything else. If all these things close in upon you for evil, know that there is still a path. The early Christians knew this path, and today we ought to know it even more deeply through experience. They had been Christians for only a few days, while we have been Christians for two thousand years. We ought to know all the ways of God: how God acts and how He deals with His people. We must also learn the power of communal prayer. When a person shares his request, his cross, his trouble, or his need with someone else, and Christ sees that this other person is praying out of love and not for personal gain,

God is moved and grants the request for the sake of others as well.

For the sake of others, He gives abundantly.

We have many examples that we could offer in such cases. Never withdraw into yourself. Write about it, speak about it, or telephone someone and say, “I am in a difficult situation; I have a serious problem; I have a need.” It may concern someone who has died, someone living far away, one of our children, our husband or wife, or anyone who is going through a trial. Tell others too. You do not need to give the person’s name if you do not have it; God knows it. Let others pray as well; let others also entreat Christ. And when He sees that a person is moved by love for his fellow human being, the supreme love of the Lord is moved, and He acts on behalf of that request.

In one place, the divine John Chrysostom says concerning those who have fallen asleep—and we can apply his words here as well: “When you hold a memorial service for someone who has died, do not invite only your relatives, who will merely offer their condolences. They may be unbelievers with no relationship to Christ, and they may even blaspheme Him. They will not benefit you. Give the name instead to other people who are faithful. Even if they do not attend that particular Church, let them pray in their own Church. From there, let them entreat Christ and pray for that person. Give the name to a devout woman, a God-fearing man, a young woman or a young man—to someone whom you know has a relationship with God. Give them the name.” The departed person receives great benefit; his case receives great benefit. When Christ is earnestly entreated—when the Judge, so to speak, is earnestly petitioned—He looks upon a case differently and examines every detail so that He may judge it more justly.

This is unlike a bare case concerning indifferent people and an overlooked person that simply arrives before the judgment seat of God. Therefore, I repeat: whatever happens to you, never give up. God has an angel for you as well. Whatever chains Satan or your own carelessness may have placed upon you, there is a way for that too to be set right. This is what I wished to offer to your love this evening. I pray that God will bless us and grant us to experience what those first Christians experienced, so that God may be glorified and we may pass through this life somewhat more peacefully, amid all the beasts that surround us every day.

Εις την προς Εβραίους επιστολή, στο έκτο κεφάλαιο, στο τελευταίο εδάφιο, ξέρετε τι λέει ο Παύλος; Ότι ο Χριστιανός την άγκυρά του την έχει στον ουρανό. Για να εξασφαλιστεί ένα καράβι, να εξασφαλιστεί ένα πλωτό μέσον, ως επί το πλείστον καταφεύγει στην άγκυρά του, την οποία δεν τη ρίχνει στα αμπάρια του, τη ρίχνει έξω και πιάνεται από τη θάλασσα κάτω και ρίχνει και άλλη μπροστά, να μπορέσει να το σταματήσει κάπου, να μην το συντρίψει ένας βράχος, όταν είναι σε δύσκολη κατάσταση. Και ο Χριστιανός, σαν ένα πλοίο που ταξιδεύει κι αυτός, πρέπει να ρίχνει την άγκυρά του. Η άγκυρα του Χριστιανού πρέπει να ρίχνεται επάνω, γιατί εκεί είναι ο Χριστός, από τον οποίο μπορεί να πιαστεί ο άνθρωπος και να ασφαλιστεί. Έχουμε, λέει, «άγκυραν εις τον ουρανόν ασφαλή τε και βεβαίαν». Ποιος το ξέρει; Ποιος το χρησιμοποιεί;

τα 'χασε, τα 'χασε, δεν το περίμενε, τα 'χασε. «Από της χαράς ουκ ήνοιξε τον πυλώνα». Δεν άνοιξε την πόρτα του ανθρώπου, τον άφησε έξω και έτρεξε μέσα να τους πει ότι ο Πέτρος είναι απ' έξω. «Εισδραμούσα δε απήγγειλεν», λέει, «εστάναι τον Πέτρον προ του πυλώνος». Τρέχει μέσα και τους λέγει ότι ο Πέτρος είναι απ' έξω από την πόρτα. Καταλαβαίνετε τώρα πώς τους φάνηκε των ανθρώπων αυτών. Οι δε, μέσα προσευχόμενοι, «προς αυτήν είπον· μαίνη». «Τρελάθηκε, τρελάθηκες, παιδί μου». Αυτή ήταν η απάντηση. Ίσως να μας φαίνεται παράξενο αυτό και να δημιουργεί και κατά κάποιον τρόπο ιλαρότητα. Γιατί εμείς πολλές φορές προσευχόμεθα χωρίς να πιστεύουμε απόλυτα ότι μπορούμε να έχουμε απάντηση σε αυτό που προσευχόμεθα. Αυτό τούτο έγινε και εκεί. «Τι προσεύχεστε, κύριοι;» «Προσευχόμεθα για τον Πέτρο». «Ορίστε, ο Πέτρος ήρθε». Γιατί λέτε στο παιδί ότι τρελάθηκε;
