Summary

The Church celebrates Christ’s Nativity, the shepherds’ adoration, and the Magi’s visit together, although the Magi arrived considerably later. The star was presented as a supernatural guide rather than an ordinary astronomical conjunction, disappearing before Jerusalem and reappearing after Scripture identified Bethlehem. Herod’s massacre of Bethlehem’s children followed the two-year period learned from the Magi, and the Church venerates these Holy Innocents as martyrs.

Tonight, since we are on the eve of Christmas and this year we have not devoted any evening to these great feasts, I thought that this final talk before the Christmas break should concern the events of the Nativity.

As I see it, the events of the Nativity unfold in three stages. The first is Christ’s birth in Bethlehem and the events that took place there. The second is the visit of the Magi, and the third is what happened after the Magi departed. Anyone wishing to address the events surrounding the Nativity would need to give three separate talks.

There is also the Sunday before the Nativity, which falls this coming Sunday, when the Church will present to us, through the Evangelist Matthew, the human genealogy of Jesus.

The first part of the birth of Jesus is recorded by the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. When we go to Church at Christmas, summoned that night and awakened by the bells of the churches—which are types of the angels who announced that Christ our God had been born—so that we may worship Him, we already find our Lord born, and indeed we stand before the account of the coming of the Magi from the East. This does not mean, of course, that the Magi arrived in time for the Lord’s birth. Rather, the Church has joined these events together: the Nativity, the adoration of the shepherds, and the adoration of the Magi, all on one and the same

day. For the Church is not concerned with the precise chronology—with the exact hour or day—but with the events themselves and the fact that they took place. The Magi arrived much later, as we can see from Herod’s action when he ordered the slaughter of the infants two years old and under, according to the time he had ascertained from the Magi. The Magi said that the star had appeared about two years earlier. Clearly, these men could not have come from Arabia in a single night, arrived in Bethlehem, searched for the King, made inquiries throughout the kingdom concerning the One who had been born—Christ—and crossed the difficult desert, enduring all that they encountered. But, as I was saying, these three events...

The Church celebrates the Nativity and the adoration of the shepherds and the Magi on one and the same day, presenting the events to us in summary. We are not standing before the events as they unfold. We stand before Christ already born, and we hear these specific words from the first chapter of Matthew: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, behold, Magi from the East,” and so forth. Tonight I wanted to speak about the third part of this whole account—not about the birth itself, nor about the events immediately surrounding it, but about what happened after the Magi departed. I do not know whether you have ever given thought to these Magi. Many people have no clear understanding of them.

We call them Magi, but we mean highly educated men, men of learning—people who, as we might say today, held at least three degrees, and perhaps five, six, or seven. These were the men who were called. They did not simply come; they were called, just as the shepherds were called, because they did not know that God had been born, that the King had been born. Neither the shepherds nor the Magi knew. The shepherds were informed by the angel, while the Magi were informed by the star. Concerning this star, of which we sing, “Those who worshipped the stars were taught by a star,” we must search the Book of Numbers,

chapters 22, 23, and 24, to discover what caused these distinguished men of learning to rise and come to Judea in search of the newborn King. For, as they understood it, the King had been born for them. “Where is He who has been born?”—not, “Where is He who is going to be born?”—but, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” He has been born for us; show us where He is staying, where He is, so that we may visit Him. That was the purpose of these distinguished men, and they came from Arabia. From Arabia. I emphasize this because, in Psalm 71, David says prophetically that Christ will receive gold from Arabia.

This is the worship offered by the nations, and the gold was presented together with frankincense and myrrh. So there, I say, one will find the reason. Perhaps you have heard these events described in earlier talks. Perhaps others among you have read about them yourselves and made the connection. Yet I want to believe that even among us tonight there are people who know nothing about these things, while others know them only imperfectly. So let the rest permit me a brief digression, so that I may explain the source from which these men drew their knowledge and how the appearance of a star—a strange sight in the heavens—caused them to seek a newborn King

in a particular land and a particular place: Judea. The indication begins in the days when Moses was leading the people of Israel through the sea, out of Egypt and toward the Promised Land. One morning, the sea brought forth some three million people. That is how it appeared to those living on the other side: when dawn came, they looked and saw a vast swarm of people. They were frightened and believed that this nation, which had appeared in such a miraculous way, posed a threat to them. There was a king named Balak,

who thought that he would have great difficulty confronting this people. So he decided to summon a magus from far away to curse them and recite some invocation against them, so that his kingdom would not be endangered. Balak therefore sent a company—or a committee, a delegation, as we might call it—with a great deal of money and many gifts. They were to implore a renowned seer of that time, named Balaam, to come and curse this people so that the kingdom would be safe. These men set out in search of Balaam. At last they found him and explained the reason for their visit.

He said, “I cannot answer you now; I must ask God.” What god he intended to ask, I do not know. In any case, he kept them with him that night, and in the morning he told them, “I cannot come, because this is not a people who may be treated in that way.” He did not explain what had happened, but God’s answer to him had been: “Do not go there, because this people belongs to Me.” They tried to persuade him but failed, and so they departed, as we would say, empty-handed. In due course they returned to the king and told him what had happened.

Balak reproached them, and in a sense mocked them for having failed. Then he found others who were more capable and sent them equipped with even more costly gifts. And so, after some time, another delegation from Balak visited Balaam. God’s answer was: “Do not involve yourself with this people; they belong to Me.” But money can sometimes corrupt a man. Although Balaam had said that he would not come, he then told them, “Stay here tonight, so that I may ask my god.” He kept them there, asked his god, and his god told him to go.

Delighted now by the money and all that went with it, he rose in the morning and told them, “Let us go.” He saddled a donkey he kept there—a female donkey, not a mule—and they set out. When they reached the open country, the donkey strangely left the proper road for no apparent reason and turned into the fields. Balaam struck it with his staff to make it return to the road, but the donkey would not obey and went farther into the fields. He struck it repeatedly, two or three times. At last it entered a narrow place with a wall on either side and pressed him against the wall, injuring his foot, and then the donkey lay down beneath him.

He kept beating the donkey while sitting on its back. Then, astonishingly, as he was beating it, the donkey turned and spoke to him: “Why have you beaten me these three times?” Yet instead of being terrified that his donkey was speaking and having his knees give way, as we say, he began a conversation with it. The donkey continued: “In all the time you have owned me, have I ever behaved like this?” He answered, “No.” “Then do you not think I have some reason for being unable to continue as before?” At that moment an angel appeared before him with a drawn sword in his hand and said, “I am the one preventing it, because your way is perverse.”

Someone hearing this may ask, “How is his way perverse, since God told him to go?” What follows answers that question for him, but also for us, and we must pay very close attention to it in our prayers. A person receives an answer from God according to the disposition of his heart.

Many times, when we pray, we do not allow God to speak. We tell God what He is supposed to say, and afterward we find ourselves entangled. “But I prayed!” How did you pray? Forcefully, insisting on your own way? That is often how we pray. God forbid; prayer should not be like that. It should be: “My Christ, as You know, this and that is happening to me. Whether I am distressed, embittered, humiliated, or whatever else may happen to me, I beseech You: do what is right, and do not listen to what I want.” Something comes to mind that Sophrony—I do not remember exactly who—used to say in a prayer he offered every day. In this prayer

he said, among other things: “Even if I should ever deny You, know that I still love You. Some overwhelming force made me deny You, but I will continue to love You.” When we ask God, “Yes, my Lord, let it be as You will—but I would like this to happen; I would like to marry this man, or this woman; I would like to make this journey; I would like to do this,” then the heart is already inclined toward its own desire, and you will be embittered if what you want does not happen. Even if fulfilling that desire would mean your death, you may receive the answer you insist upon, only for it to come crashing down upon your head afterward. That is the perverse way. God had already spoken to you. Did He not tell you that this people belongs to Him? Where are you going? Why did you want to ask God again? Does God say one thing and then take it back? More money arrived, so you thought, “Let us see whether He has changed His mind and whether I may go with them.” Thank you.

“Your way is perverse,” the angel tells him. “Nevertheless, rise and go, but you will say only what I tell you.” After such a severe lesson, Balaam promised to obey, and he went. When he arrived with his escort, Balak and all the others received him. Balak praised the men who had succeeded in bringing him, and then took Balaam up onto a small hill. I am telling you all this only in summary. If you are inclined and wish to learn the details, read these chapters in Numbers. “Down there you can see this whole multitude of people”—some 3,200,000, since there were 600,000 men alone, besides women and children—“and how they have come.”

Balaam was to curse the people from there. Yet, to Balak’s astonishment, he heard Balaam extolling their virtues and blessing them. Something had gone wrong. So Balak seized him and took him to another hill, hoping that from there he might curse the people. Again, it went wrong. Once more Balaam spoke in a remarkable way and began proclaiming things about this people. At one point he said that they possessed the strength of a unicorn. What the unicorn is forms another subject. It is a creature of the wild, of the forests, with a single horn upon its head. Because of the great power believed to reside in that horn, and because of a service it rendered to the other beasts—which I shall describe—it was regarded as mighty by the other animals. They watched it, feared it, and also respected it. In summer, when the waters in the mountains dried up and only a little stagnant water remained in the ravines, that water became foul and the animals could not drink it. They would approach, but the water was filthy, so they could not drink. They would remain there thirsty for days, even weeks, waiting for this beast, the unicorn, to come.

It would pierce the water with its horn, and the water would immediately become clean. The unicorn would drink, and then the other animals would seize the opportunity and drink as well. This is how God, through the prophet Balaam, portrayed the people of Israel. More specifically, I want you to know that the third time—when Balak took him to yet another place so that he might curse them—Balaam proclaimed what was to come from this people: “A star shall arise from Jacob.” A star from Jacob. What is this star from Jacob? If you go to Church on Sunday, you will hear another detail which must be joined to this one: Judaea, as Micah writes, for Christ would be born in Bethlehem of Judaea. And then you will understand the star that went to Arabia and brought those wise men—the Magi—to that place.

When these two lights are brought together—the light from heaven, revealed through the star, and the light of the Scriptures—a person can find Christ; and the Magi found Christ already born. This is why you will hear: “Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.” But Judah was not the firstborn; Reuben was. Why, then, is Judah named here? Go to Genesis, and you will find that Jacob summoned his twelve children and blessed them. Beginning with the firstborn, he spoke the words appointed for each one. But when he came to Judah, he said to him: “From you, from your own loins, a ruler shall not cease, nor shall a king cease, until the One who is awaited comes—Shiloh, the Messiah.”

The royal line would come to an end; and indeed, when Christ came, it did come to an end, as you know. So now they had the star arising from Jacob—that is, in the land of Jacob—and the tribe of Judah: two signs that together would help them find the Messiah. This was written down and preserved, having been revealed by the Holy Spirit, spoken and prophesied through Balaam, the patriarch of astronomy. In their schools, they always awaited the day when this prophecy would become a living reality. Centuries later, it did. And when those astrologers saw that a strange star had appeared, they immediately understood: behold, Balaam’s prophecy had been fulfilled.

our patriarch—our teacher of astrology, that is—Balaam. That is where they begin; from there they pick up the trail, take hold of the thread, and set out in search of the tribe of Judah, in Judea. Judea is inhabited by the descendants of Judah. For, as you know, the land was divided into eleven portions. The tribe of Levi received a double portion, because it also held the priestly office and had to be preserved for the mission entrusted to it in the Church of that time. So that is where anyone must begin if he wishes to discover where the Magi set out from to come and do all that they did. They went and found Him, but Herod had no desire to follow them. He devised an evil plan.

In a sense, he established the date: “Having secretly called them, he determined from them the exact time when the star appeared,” as it is written. “There is no need for me to go. Go,” he said, “and search carefully; if you find the Child, come and tell me as well, so that I too may worship Him.” Was he unwilling to travel the ten kilometers to Bethlehem to see Him? No, because he was certain that he could put Him out of the way with his sword. He had slaughtered his own son and his wife, and I do not know how many others. That is why the saying recorded by Josephus arose in his time: “It is better to be Herod’s pig than Herod’s son”—because, given the choice, he would refrain from eating the pig, but not from killing his own son. Alas! In the end, of course, he became swollen and worm-eaten, and so forth, and was quietly removed from this life, without being able to accuse God of not...

God took him sooner and did not leave him time to repent. For God allows things to run their natural course. And then we are scandalized and ask, “Where is God?” He did the least He could: He departed into Egypt—and what else could He have done? He left Herod to his wickedness, and so on. Now, some children were slaughtered; well, it was no evil for them that they became saints. From that moment those poor children were numbered among the choir of saints—all 14,000 of them—and our Church commemorates them on December 29. For if they had lived, subtract the fornicators, the adulterers, the homosexuals too, if you want to be modern, the murderers, and the unbelievers, and not one of them would have entered Paradise. But now all 14,000 entered. Was any harm done? Yet people judge these things by human reasoning and emotion: “What had those children done?” They speak as though the Child who came possessed such wickedness! Indeed, they even speak shamefully of our Christ. Yes—because He made those children saints and has kept them safely in His storehouse ever since. What harm He did them, indeed!

Unfortunately, that is how some people see these things. In any event, the Magi were counted worthy and made it all the way there. As you know, after Herod told them that the Child was in Bethlehem, the star appeared again as soon as they set out. From time to time, you will hear all sorts of fairy tales on the radio and elsewhere—about Saturn, Jupiter, and I do not know what other heavenly bodies coming together among the constellations. None of that is true; it is ridiculous. The star guided them in broad daylight. After all, do we see stars during the day? No. So how did this star guide them? Did they set out at night? No, they left during the day. Can a star move before them in broad daylight and this not be a miracle? It was indeed a miracle. So do not listen to the fairy tales people tell. Let us hold fast to the truth.

It says that when they saw the star, “they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.” So they had seen it in the East and believed that the birth had taken place, but then they lost sight of it. For if it had continued to guide them, there would have been no reason for them to go to Herod and be subjected to humiliation. It would have led them directly to the Child. They lost sight of it, came to Jerusalem, and made inquiries. The authority of Holy Scripture was thus affirmed, and now, guided by both the star and Scripture, they set out.

They set out. And there was the star! They rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

And they found Him there in the house—not in the cave, not in the manger, but in the house. Clearly, this was after the eighth day. For if it had been that same night, and they had immediately risen and fled to Egypt—if all this had happened on the very day of His birth—then how could His circumcision have taken place, and how could the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple have taken place? Since these events did take place, this proves that Christ did not depart during the first few days, but much later.

He remained in Bethlehem. It seems that the Most Holy Theotokos, because she had given birth to Him there, intended to raise Him there. That is why He was found in a house, not in the manger, where the shepherds had gone that same night because they were nearby. The Magi, however, offered gold, frankincense, and myrrh. With the gold they worshipped Him as King; with the myrrh they worshipped Him as the sacrificial Victim who would die; and the frankincense signified a fragrant sacrifice offered to God, showing that God would accept the Lord’s sacrifice on behalf of mankind. The Magi did not return.

Herod remained a raving Herod, as our Holy Church says so beautifully in the Akathist Hymn. “Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, ‘Arise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt.’” Why, then, when just a little earlier you said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife”? This causes Protestants and Jehovah’s Witnesses to stumble, as well as some ignorant and uninstructed people among our own. Why do you not say here, “Take your wife and your child,” or, “your wife and her child”? It is because the Evangelist wishes to show that she continues to live as a virgin. Yet earlier he called her your wife. Thank you.

From the moment our Most Holy Theotokos gave birth, she ceased to be referred to as Joseph’s wife. If Matthew wrote earlier, and if she was spoken of as his wife, it was because she was pregnant; had she not been presented as someone’s wife, she would have had to be stoned as an adulteress. But now that danger had passed, and everything was put in its proper place. And so, great man, you who stand outside this mystery yet were called to serve it: take the mother and the Child. From then on, as you will see, it is “the Child and His mother,” or “the mother and the Child.” Joseph is not presented as her husband; we do not hear “my wife” or “my child.” None of these expressions is used, because the reason for them had ceased. The Child had left her womb and had been born; she was no longer in danger of being stoned, and everything was put in its proper place. Do not disregard these things. Do not take offense and then go searching for other children of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Because we are mistaken. “Take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt.” Flee—not merely go on your way; flee! And so he leaves quickly. But where is he fleeing from? From Herod. God flees. And now, listen: He flees in the middle of the night. Why did He leave at night? There in the darkness, they must have found some animal; Joseph must have placed her on a little donkey or a camel, and off they went. You may ask, “What is happening? Who is fleeing?” God is fleeing. God flees? Yes, God flees. God takes the humbler course—the humbler course. This is another lesson: “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Guard your life. Do not expose yourselves to danger and assume that God will help you. No, God will not help you in that way. God will help you when He must.

God will help you when He ought to help you, but He will not help you in your pride, when you are able to protect yourself or manage on your own. God always provides what you and I cannot provide. And so here God flees. He flees into Egypt. He flees into Egypt, and He is told, “Stay there. Remain there in peace.” There is no television, no radio, no telephone, no wireless communication—none of these things exist. Stay there quietly, in inner stillness, “until I tell you.” I am watching over you; do not be troubled. “Until I tell you.” Now let Me tell you the reason for all this: “For Herod is about to search for the Child in order to destroy Him.” Herod will learn that the Magi have slipped away from him.

He will take it as mockery, become enraged, and order the massacre in an attempt to take the Child’s life. So take the Child and flee. “And he arose and took the Child and His mother by night.” The Child and His mother—not his wife and their child, nor his own child. The Child and His mother. Nor does it say his child and the child’s mother. No: the Child and His mother. Joseph now appears at once as a third person, an outsider, who takes this pair with him: a mother and child. The Child and His mother—those are the two. So he took the mother and the Child, withdrew into Egypt, and remained there. God had foreseen this and had it written through the prophet, in Hosea chapter 11, verse 1: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

You should also know that this scene appears in the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah, where he sees our Most Holy Theotokos as a light cloud. The Theotokos is the cloud who bears God, who transcends all things. You also know that when Christ, as a little Child, entered Egypt, all the statues—the idols of the Egyptians—fell and were shattered. The Egyptians were utterly bewildered and confused, not knowing what had happened. They went and consulted their oracles, but the oracles gave no answer, because when the Lord enters their midst, the oracles fall silent. It is absurd that we go to mediums, table-turning, and séances. Enter with Christ, holding a cross in your hand, and speak the name of Jesus Christ. Hold the séance and summon the spirit; they will tell you, ‘It cannot be done. It has been postponed.’

He is not welcome in here. But what can we do? We believe. Show a cross to a Jehovah’s Witness, and he will fall out the window; he cannot bear it. So when our Most Holy Theotokos went there, fifteen years old, with the Child in her arms, and so on, all the idols fell. Read the nineteenth chapter of Isaiah, I tell you. God foresaw this very moment and had it written down. And she remained there, it says, “until the death of Herod”—until this Herod’s life came to an end. It is said that they remained there for seven years. Seven years they stayed. “Then Herod, when he saw that he had been deceived by the Magi”—as we were saying earlier—“was exceedingly angry; and he sent and slew all the male children in Bethlehem and in all its surrounding districts.”

“Two years old and under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the Magi.” From this it is clear that they had seen the star two years earlier. That was when it first gave its sign and set its power in motion. Something comes to mind: the Holy Forerunner must also have been included in this murderous decree of Herod, because he was about the same age as our Christ, with only six months between them. Yet after this massacre he was found in the wilderness, for Tradition tells us that his mother took him and fled from the swords of Herod’s soldiers. It is said that one of the soldiers was catching up with her, intending to seize him from her arms.

He was pursuing her. The mother was Elizabeth. Saint Elizabeth offered a brief prayer and said to a mountain she came upon, “O mountain, receive the child and his mother.” Those few words were enough: the mountain split open, and she found shelter within the cleft. Thus the young John found himself in the wilderness, where he remained until the appointed time, when he came down and went forth—later rebuking Herod and baptizing our Lord, and so on. At this point I would also like to tell you that even today, if God blesses you and you ever reach Bethlehem to venerate the holy places, look down inside the cave, on the right. There is another cave where relics have been preserved of the—

The relics of the fourteen thousand infants remain there to this day. Among them are also some relics of adults, though far fewer. If, for example, there are a hundred bones of small children, there may be ten bones of adults; and besides the small skulls, there are larger ones as well. These were evidently mothers who refused to surrender their children. When the soldiers tried to tear the children from them and they would not let go, they killed both mother and child. The evidence remains there to this day. Of course, we do not believe these things, but one day we shall find ourselves above, and then we shall believe. And I pray it will not be too late for this truth to convict us. The Holy Spirit had foreseen this as well.

A prophecy had been written. The Prophet Jeremiah wrote this prophecy in his thirty-eighth chapter concerning the events of that massacre at Ramah. Ramah means a height or hill—an elevated place. Ramah. You know, Ramah is what is now called Arimathea. That is Ramah. You know Arimathea from the title, do you not? Joseph was the man who cared for our Lord after His death, when He was taken down so that they might prepare Him for burial. “A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and weeping and great mourning.” You can imagine what took place.

“She was weeping for her children and refused to be comforted, because they were no more.” How could anyone persuade such a mother, when even we today, at the fullness of the age, after so many miracles, so much of the Gospel, and so many sermons, still do not trust that there is life beyond the grave? How could you comfort that mother of many martyrs, who did not know what to believe? “She refused to be comforted.” This is spoken in the person of Rachel. Rachel, as you know, was Jacob’s wife. From her came Joseph; from her came the Most Holy Theotokos, David, and the Most Holy Theotokos—they are her children. Thus, looking ahead from that time, she “refused to be comforted.” I do not know whether you are aware that Rachel’s tomb stands on a road called the Hippodrome Road.

There was a hippodrome outside Bethlehem, and that road was therefore called the Hippodrome Road. Rachel’s tomb is on the right-hand side. Rachel, as you know, died in a difficult labor—she died in childbirth, as we say—outside Bethlehem, and she was buried there. Today, if you go there, the site is under Jewish jurisdiction. They have stationed soldiers there to guard it, just as they guard the tombs of the fathers and Patriarchs, and the tomb of David. Whenever they recognize something as belonging to them and to their lineage, they take possession of it and place it under guard. Elsewhere they also profit from such places, as at the Temple of Solomon. A person pays a dollar to enter Mecca, because they believe that Abraham was there.

It makes no difference that others also claim it: the Muslims through Hagar, and we as well. Hagar, from whom the Hagarenes take their name, was also Abraham’s wife, and we too trace our descent from there. How they will resolve all this, or whether the Jewish authorities will drive the Muslim claimants away some night, God knows. In any case, the passage continues: “When Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt.” As I said, God had not forgotten him. An angel came again to notify him. “Rise,” he now tells him, “take the Child and His mother”—again, you see, the Child and His mother—“and go into the land of Israel.” He does not say, “Flee.”

Now you may go calmly; there is no danger. Go in peace. “Go.” You may stay a while if you wish, prepare yourself, gather your belongings, and leave tomorrow or the day after. The road is open now. We have a green light, as we would say. “For those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” “They are dead”—not “he is dead,” but “they are dead.” It was not only Herod who died; Antipater, his son, had also died, having been executed by Herod five days earlier. Both had been against the Child. So the plural is correct. For Herod’s three sons—Archelaus, Philip, and Antipater—were devils just like their father. Notice how quietly the text says, “those who sought the Child’s life.” Herod died at about seventy years of age, in the thirty-seventh year of his reign. Thank you.

He had given orders for three thousand people to be slaughtered, and three thousand were slaughtered at his death, so that there would be mourning, you understand—such was the wickedness in him. Thus, “those who sought the Child’s life” had died. “Then he rose, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.” He returned from Egypt to the land of Israel. Some people are troubled by this and ask how it could be, since Egypt too was under the Roman yoke. Everyone was under the Roman yoke, yes—but Herod did not have authority there.

He had authority in his own territory. That is why the Child escaped abroad, as we would say. There was no Interpol in those days to come and arrest Him, you understand. Herod had authority over his own subjects, but they had escaped him. Many people raise questions about this; they become troubled, stop at that point, and then try to demolish the entire structure of the faith. That is precisely why I am discussing it. What I am telling you may be new to many of you. I do not know. We would need to discuss this thirty times over, so that you could see—and so that I too could see and hear, and you could hear—everything contained within it. And this applies not only here, but to every passage of Holy Scripture. We are merely giving signposts and broad outlines. Anyone who wishes can go more deeply through prayer and study and learn many things. In this case, then, he took the Child and His mother. Once again it does not say, “his wife and his child.” He took...

“The Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel,” as I told you. Along the routes toward Nazareth, Bethlehem, and other places, there were inns dating from those days, when caravans traveled to and from Egypt. The Most Holy Theotokos and our Christ stayed in such places on their journeys, and some remain to this day. In fact, as you travel out toward Hebron, on the right-hand side, after descending through several bends, one such inn lies below. I have photographed it on a slide. When Joseph reached the borders of Israel, he asked who the king was, who was reigning there. The elder had already learned to be wary because of what had happened in Jerusalem.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid. “This one will be just like his father,” he thought. And so he was afraid.

He was afraid to go there, to enter that region. See how the All-Seeing One watches over such a problem: where should Joseph go, and where should he settle them? Before he had time to torment himself over it, “being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the regions of Galilee.” “Go in that direction,” God tells him. Some people imagine that God has other business and is too occupied. “Would God really take the time to concern Himself with me?” But He died for you, man—He died for you! Yet you do not believe that He died for you. That is why, whenever matters of faith arise, you doubt Him so readily and treat Him as though He were of no account. But if someone touches the sore spot of your ego or your self-interest, then you immediately react: “Do you know who I am?”

“You will have to answer to me!” Yet the other person is nothing in your eyes—an obscure man, though perhaps a wise gentleman and a friend. Well, until now he was your friend. How did you get to the moon, then? How are you no longer his friend? You went all the way to the moon. You have been saved! Tell me about it. A great achievement indeed. But let us not philosophize about these things. God sent Joseph in that direction, and they returned to Nazareth. Christ came to Nazareth for the first time and remained there, and so what the prophets had foretold was fulfilled: “He shall be called a Nazarene.” Yet you will notice that this prophecy is not found anywhere in Holy Scripture. “He shall be called a Nazarene.” Are you pleased now that this proves the Evangelist a liar—you who think you know everything and do not believe in Tradition? The saying is nowhere recorded. Is that it? Then Holy Scripture must be false.

You accept whatever suits you, and whatever does not suit you, you reject. The prophecy is not written there. When the Myrrh-bearing Women went to find Him and learned that He had risen, what did the angel tell them? “You seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He is risen.” Even the angel calls Him the Nazarene. Yet you still persist in speaking as you do, and there are even people within the Church who repeat such things. These are the events of the first part of the whole account. I have woven them together as best I could, in order to give you a broader understanding of the Nativity, the coming of the Magi, and, more generally, the flight of our Christ into Egypt.

These people are an example of faith. An educated friend of mine once said to me, “You may describe me however you wish, as a man of letters. But tell me: what does faith mean?” “How should I know?” I replied. People from Cephalonia say, “How would I know?” “Well then,” he told me, “close the matter.” “You will close it yourself,” I answered.

They were to go the next day.

Men from the East, with all their learning and qualifications, worshiped a Child as God—and that is where the matter closes. If he did not understand this, he would want to examine everything endlessly. Tell me: how did they look upon one who seemed condemned and yet perceive that kingship was His and that He was the Lord? That closed the matter. I do not know whether my friend has kept it closed even now. One more thing I would like to tell you. There is a tradition. You saw that when I came in, I wrote something here on the board. It appears in an ancient fresco connected with Mithras. You can imagine how many centuries old it is—fourteen hundred years. These are presented as the five names of the five Magi: Sator, Arepo, Tenet, Opera, Rotas. They are found in a fresco and in another recorded inscription. The remarkable thing is this: when you write them out, you find Sator from this direction and Sator from that direction; Arepo from here and Arepo from there. In other words...

You can read them this way and that way. From whichever direction you look at them, even crosswise, they give the same names. You may need this for Paradise! So I leave it to you as an inheritance.

You said, “the angel.” It is not the angel; he comes here—it is this one who is hungry. Forgive me, it is the one who is hungry. The Ascension, the Annunciation, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, Diadochos of Photike, Hesychios the Priest, the Gospel, the Annunciation... They remain to this day; we shall not wait any longer. Now, as for you, if we must be ready, I shall prepare myself for our sake and go. We are the ones who make mistakes.

Pay close attention to this. I have only one thing to tell you: God, for His part, has done what was necessary. What, then, shall we do on our part? Let us not bring Him only our sins the day after tomorrow. What shall we bring? Metanoia—repentance—Holy Confession, Holy Communion, love, and the settling of every unresolved matter in our souls. These are the proper marks of these days, if we truly wish to celebrate Christmas in freedom.
