Summary

Matthew’s account continues the Nativity narrative by describing the Magi’s arrival in Jerusalem after seeing the star of the newborn King of the Jews. Herod, fearing a rival king, consulted the chief priests and scribes, who identified Bethlehem through Micah’s prophecy as the Messiah’s birthplace. The Magi likely arrived long after the shepherds, perhaps nearly two years after the Nativity, emphasizing that both the learned and the simple were led to worship Christ.

In our previous talk, we spoke about the birth of our Christ, and we explained why Christ was born in Bethlehem. We brought this event before you because many people, whether because of work or even infirmity, do not attend Church on the other days and therefore do not hear the events surrounding the Nativity. So, in our last talk, we called upon the Evangelist Luke, from his second chapter, to tell us how and why these things took place in Bethlehem. We saw that, because of Caesar Augustus’s decree ordering that census, everyone set out for his ancestral homeland to be registered, including the couple Joseph and Mary. We then left Christ there, newly born. The shepherds visited Him after receiving a revelation from God Himself, and that concluded the matter. Now, when we go to Church at Christmas, God willing, we shall of course find Him newly born, and we shall find the Church also reminding us of the visit of the Magi. This event is related by another Evangelist, namely the Evangelist Matthew, in his second chapter.

He describes it as follows:

“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the East and have come to worship Him.’” This is the first part of the subject. When it says that Christ was born in Bethlehem of Judea—for there is another Bethlehem as well—the Magi came from the East to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” For them, the fact was that He had already been born: not that He was yet to be born, but that the King of the Jews had been born. Of course, if someone had asked them, “How do you know this? What compelled you to believe it?” they themselves immediately gave the answer: “For we saw His star in the East.” Jerusalem is a Hebrew word, and do you know what it means? “Foundation of peace.” In a certain sense, even the city’s name points to the fact that peace between mankind and God was established there. It was signed there, on Golgotha, because when Christ ascended the Cross,

what else did He do with His blood? He signed the covenant of reconciliation between mankind and God. Jerusalem is therefore called, first, the foundation of peace; and second, you should know that it was the capital of Judea. Jerusalem was the capital of Judea. Those regions received their names, as Judea did, from the names of the twelve patriarchs.

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali—forgive me, no. Yes, from the twelve patriarchs, including Judah. Is Judah not also among the twelve patriarchs? Judah was one of Jacob’s twelve children.

He settled in a certain region, the land called Judea, both then and now, whose seat and capital is Jerusalem. It was there, then, that Magi from the East arrived, as the passage tells us. From Jerusalem, “the East” would mean Arabia and Persia. We do not know the precise place; it was either Arabia or Persia. You should bear in mind, however, that a prophecy in one of the Psalms says something about those who would come and indicates that they would come from Persia. I mean that the evidence points more strongly in that direction.

I would like you to know that Jerusalem stands on one of the four hills that make up that whole region. I do not know whether you are aware that Jerusalem—specifically the place where Solomon’s Temple stands—is at an elevation of 830 meters.

These four places, the four small hills, as one might call them, are as follows. First is Moriah, toward the east. This is the very place where Abraham offered his sacrifice, which foreshadowed the sacrifice of Christ. Golgotha is at the same elevation as the place of Abraham’s sacrifice and is only fifty meters away. To the west is another small hill called Akra; to the north is one called Bezetha; and to the south is one called Zion.

And the first temple was on Zion. Hence the more general saying, “Fear not, daughter of Zion, for your King will enter riding on the colt of a donkey.” Since I have touched upon the subject of Jerusalem, you should know that Jerusalem is a city that has suffered greatly. It is enough to tell you that it has been demolished seventeen times. If you read the history of Jerusalem, you will find that it has been destroyed seventeen times. Now the Magi say here, “We saw His star”—the star of this King—“we saw it in the East and have come to worship Him.” By coming to worship Him, they acknowledge that He is somewhat greater than they are. What is this star? To answer that, one must turn to the Old Testament, specifically to the Book of Numbers. There we find an extensive account.

It is also connected with the story of Joseph the All-Comely, which we discussed one day. That is where this star was spoken of: when this star rose in the East, the King would be born in Judea—the awaited Shiloh, as He is called. Let me tell you the story briefly. Moses was the leader and head of the three million people whom he brought out of Egypt through the sea and led toward the Promised Land. When the peoples of the surrounding regions saw this vast swarm, like an army of ants, cast up by the sea—as though the sea itself had poured forth human beings—they believed these were an ill-fated people who would bring harm upon them. And so, along their journey, although these people troubled no one—for they even received their food from Heaven and were nourished with manna, and therefore had no reason to touch anyone else’s possessions—the surrounding peoples opposed them. The Jews were consequently forced to travel all the way to their destination through warfare. If you read Exodus, you will see what these people endured for forty years in order to arrive where they did. Among the peoples living there were some called the Amalekites. They were a harsh people, but they feared the Israelites because the Israelites were so numerous.

Their king decided to summon an exorcist, a sorcerer, as such men were called at the time, who was believed to have the power to harm whomever he wished and also to bless whomever he wished. This man was called Balaam. Balak was the king, and Balaam was the sorcerer. The king sent his own men with money to summon this Balaam, asking him to come and curse the people so that his own nation would not be endangered as Israel passed through. And indeed, Balaam went. He took a considerable amount of money and set out. On the way, however, he encountered an obstacle.

Forgive me—he did not go at first. There were two appeals. The first time he refused to go because he consulted God. Although he was an idolater, he asked a god—his own god, as he understood it—and his God told him not to go, because this people belonged to Him and was blessed. So Balaam withdrew and told the messengers, “Gentlemen, I cannot come with you, because my God will not let me.” Naturally, they returned. The king considered this an affront and sent a larger and more distinguished group, with more money to entice him. After some time, they came again and put the same request to him. Balaam now found himself confronted by the lure of money. Although he had received God’s explicit command, “Do not go,” on the one hand he said, “I will not come,” but on the other hand

he gave in and said, “Stay here tonight. I will give you my answer in the morning.” You know, God answers people according to what is in their hearts. This is something that should concern every person: what state is your heart in when you ask something of God? For the Lord gives according to our hearts. Many times, you may ask God for something that is not good for you, and God may give it to you even though it is not for your good, because you want it—although you say to Him, “You decide, Lord.” Yes, but inwardly you still want it. What is the state of your heart? Does it incline toward that person, that thing, that particular outcome? You may receive it, but you will repent of having received it. A person should pray, “If it is for my good, grant it to me; otherwise, do not. In either case I will thank You. If I receive it, I thank You; indeed, if I do not receive it, I will thank You a thousand times, because if You do not give it to me, that means

You are protecting me beforehand from something that would not have been for my good.” In any event, during the night God tells Balaam to go. In the morning, as Scripture says, he rises after his master, takes a donkey—I am giving you only a summary, since the account covers four chapters; you will find it around chapter twenty-four of Numbers if you have an Old Testament and are interested in these things—he mounts the donkey and sets out for Balak’s kingdom.

On the road, however, the animal turned aside. It left the road of its own accord, as though someone were blocking its way. Balaam struck it to make it turn back, but it would not. Not only did it refuse to return, but it went even farther in the opposite direction. He tried once more to bring it back onto the road but could not, and eventually it carried him into a narrow place.

There was a wall on one side and a wall on the other. The animal stopped in the middle and even crushed his right foot, so he struck it with his staff. When he did so, the animal turned and spoke to him, saying, “You have ridden upon me all these years, and I have carried you wherever you wished.” What can one say about a man who has gone so far from God that even when he sees such miracles, he simply begins arguing with his animal? It says to him, “Now that I refuse to go forward, do you not think that something must be happening?” At that moment, Balaam saw an angel before him holding a sword—the angel who had prevented the animal from continuing along the road. Balaam was terrified. The angel said to him, “Your way is perverse, and that is why I oppose you.”

“God does not want you to go, and therefore I stand against you. Nevertheless, since you have come this far, go—but you will say only what I tell you. You will not curse this people.” So Balaam paused there with his aching foot. The animal rose, returned to the road, and eventually he reached the king. The king received him with honor because he needed him to curse this people, whom he feared and could not overcome by force. He took Balaam up to a prominent place from which he could see the whole nation below, a multitude like a swarm of ants—three million people. He told him to curse them, but instead of cursing them, Balaam blessed them. “But I did not bring you here to bless them,” the king said. “I brought you here to curse them.” Balaam replied, “I cannot say anything else. My tongue says whatever God tells it to say.” And so, there

he blessed this people, proclaimed their virtues, and even said that they possessed the strength of a unicorn. I do not know whether you have ever come across this. It is said to be an animal of the wilderness with only one horn on the crown of its head. It does not have two horns, as most horned animals do, nor branching antlers—only one.

This animal is said to have the following property: in the ravines, when pools of water stagnate and become foul in the summer so that the wild beasts cannot drink, they gather around the water and gaze at it, unable to drink. They wait for this beast to come, and with its horn it makes the sign of the Cross over the water.

When it makes the sign of the Cross over the water, the water becomes clean and drinkable. Then the other animals rush forward and drink. Thus Balaam said, by revelation from God, that this people possessed the strength of a unicorn, because they were the only people who believed in the true God, and He gave them this power. It was there that Balaam uttered a prophecy. This Balaam, this seer—for we should bear in mind that seers were not like those people here who, how shall I put it, perform satanic acts against particular persons or things, bring trouble upon married couples, harm animals, interfere with the winds, and are said to make use of Satan. They were educated—

They were educated men—philosophers, astrologers, and priests. They held three or four degrees; in short, they were learned men. Balaam, then, evidently belonged to a school of astrology. He was, as we might say, a professor. By the grace of God, he prophesied at that time and said that from Jacob, through his descendant Judah and the kingdom of Judah, would be born the One who was awaited—Shiloh, as he calls Him—the awaited Messiah. This star, then, would arise from Jacob, and specifically from the tribe of Judah. And there, when the Patriarch was called to give his blessing,

he blessed each of his sons in turn, beginning with Reuben and continuing onward. When he came to Judah, their father also uttered a prophecy: that from his loins, from his seed, would come the One who would be born and save the world. It appears, then, that these men preserved the memory of this prophecy in their school of astronomy. And as our Church says so beautifully, “Those who worshipped the stars were taught by a star.” Those who worshipped the stars and studied astrology were now being taught by the star. The star stirred them, guided them, and led them by the hand. They had always watched and waited, while the prophecy seemed to remain unfulfilled. And then

Christ was born, it seems, and this star appeared in the East. When they saw it, they interpreted the prophecy of their own patriarch—the founder of their field, so to speak, as we might speak of Galen, Hippocrates, or some other patriarch of a science. For them, that figure was Balaam, this chief seer. And now they were certain that his prophecy was being fulfilled. “We see this strange star. It does not belong to the familiar company of our constellations.” They knew the heavens precisely, and whenever they saw something new, they immediately recognized it as something new. So they set out in their own way and came—not to some other tribe, Benjamin or Levi or any other—but to the tribe of Judah, to Judea. For that was where the prophecy pointed: the One foretold would be born from the tribe of Judah. That is why they came seeking the King of the Jews.

They speak of the King of the Jews who has already been born. This explanation was necessary so that we could understand what this star was: “We saw His star in the East.” As I told you, you will find this in the twenty-fourth chapter of Numbers. Numbers is one of the books of the Pentateuch, which belongs to the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—the first five books. Numbers is one of these five books, written by Moses himself through revelation. There you will find it. “We have come,” they say, “to worship Him.” To worship: the Greek word is formed from pros and kyneo—kappa, upsilon, nu, epsilon, omega. It means “to kiss”; that is, “We have come to fall down before Him and kiss Him.”

That is what the word means. Here you should understand the following:

after these men had been awakened to the fact that this One had been born, fulfilling the prophecy of their own patriarch and teacher, the star disappeared. We can infer this because, if the star had remained to help them, they would have had no reason to come asking questions and searching. The star itself would have led them to the place where the newborn Child was. They had lost sight of the star, but they held fast to the knowledge that He was in Judea. Where exactly was He? How far away? By what means would they travel? In any event, they set out and eventually reached Judea. Later in the account we can work out when they arrived. We have compressed all these events together: the worship of the shepherds,

the worship of the Magi, and the birth of the Lord—we commemorate them here on the same day. Yet, as you understand, it is not technically possible for all of this to have happened at the same time. The purpose of the Evangelists, however, is not to give us a strict chronology, but to tell us what happened. Whether something occurred two days earlier or later is another matter. That does not concern the truths of faith and salvation. What matters is that both the distinguished and the ordinary worshipped Him, both the learned and the unlearned. That is the point. He was revealed to the one group and to the other. An angel descended here; a star appeared there. Preparation was made for both groups. This is the point being emphasized: all these things bear witness to the importance of the Person for whom they took place.

The account continues by telling us how Herod felt when he heard this news: “When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.” “All Jerusalem” means his own circle—his aides, his ministers, his government, his people. When they learned that the Magi were searching for someone who had been born, they thought, “Then another king has been born, and we know nothing about it. Our kingdom is in danger.” “And all Jerusalem with him. And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ was to be born.” He summoned these learned men, who held the Law and the Prophets in their hands, to find out what their writings said.

Was there a prophecy saying that Christ would be born and where He would be born? They must have searched their scrolls and books, and they found it. “They said to him, ‘In Bethlehem of Judea.’” That is where Christ is born. “For thus it is written by the prophet.” This is the Prophet Micah, in the second verse of his fifth chapter: “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least”—you see, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, because there was another Bethlehem—“Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.” You are not insignificant among the towns of Judea. “For from you shall come forth a ruler”—from you, he says, will come One who shall lead—“who

will shepherd My people Israel.” This is a prophecy from God: “My people Israel.” Bethlehem means “house of bread,” and indeed from there came forth the Bread of Life. The names of the cities, villages, and all the places where Christ stood and played a part speak of Him and call Him to mind. “Then Herod secretly called the Magi and determined from them the exact time when the star had appeared.” Secretly: evil immediately entered his mind. He summoned them discreetly and carefully established from them—notice this—the

date when the star had appeared. Evidently he wrote it down, because he would need it. If events did not unfold as he expected, he would put another, more forceful plan into action, and for that he needed the date. For he immediately conceived the plan to destroy every little child from that age onward—from that day and hour, as it were—so that he could eliminate the One who might threaten his throne.

I do not know whether you are aware of this, but he had a great lust for power. What does history tell us about him? He was fiercely ambitious and extremely cruel. He murdered his wife and his own children, lest one of them should take his kingdom from him. That is why a historian of the time said it was better to be Herod’s pig than his son. If you were one of Herod’s pigs, there was a chance he would not slaughter you. But if you were his son, he feared for his throne and slaughtered you. And as you know, he gave the order, and many children were slain—fourteen thousand infants—

whom we discussed one Wednesday, soon after we first met. In the end, when the time came to bury Herod, his body had become eaten by worms and swollen to such proportions that they had to tear down the doorway to carry him out. In a sense, then, he was punished even in this life. So, as I was saying, when Herod received this news, he summoned the Magi and determined from them the exact time when the star had appeared. He wrote in his notes when these men had seen the star. This is further evidence that, at this point, the star was absent and could not be seen. “And he sent them to Bethlehem.” Since the chief priests and scribes had said that the prophet named Bethlehem, he sent them there.

You know, in those days Bethlehem was fourteen kilometers from Jerusalem; today, with the roads made straighter, it is twelve. “And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, ‘Go and search diligently for the Child, and when you have found Him, report back to me, that I too may come and worship Him.’” That was a Lie with a capital L. This was not his intention, as later events proved. “You go,” he told them. But why do you not go yourself? Why did you immediately fill yourself with malice, begin scheming and making plans to destroy people, and yet not go yourself to see with your own eyes?

What if they lie to you? And yet a man is ruled by his ego and places all his confidence in his own power. He counts everyone else as nothing—even God Himself. A man can even set himself against God. He becomes foolish, beside himself. What would it have cost Herod to climb into his carriage and make the short journey there? Or to accompany these men, since they had a mission of some kind? “No, I will not go with them.”

In any event, he considered it beneath him to go.

The others remembered his request. “When they had heard the king, they departed.” “Certainly, we shall go. Thank you very much.” And what happened?

“Behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.” The star that had awakened them to the birth of the Messiah now appeared again. It guided them from Jerusalem to Bethlehem. As men trained in the sciences, they recognized from its appearance and radiance that this was the same star. Behold, the star they had seen in the East “went before them”: it guided them, moving ahead as their guide, “until it came and stood over the place where the Child was”—until it came and stopped above the place, as if saying, “He is here below.”

On the basis of this, every merely scientific, non-miraculous explanation must be ruled out. This was a miracle. It was not a conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, as some claim, or anything of that kind. Such explanations are absurd. Here was a star moving in broad daylight. Night came, and still it moved; then again, a star in broad daylight. It moved and then stopped: “He is here.” Constellations and planetary conjunctions do not behave like that. According to astronomy, stars and other phenomena do appear, and that is true. But in this case we are dealing with a miracle, not a coincidence, as some who study these matters claim. “When the Magi saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.”

All our toil was worth it.

Our labors were worth it. “And when they had come into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother.” Not in the manger—this is the distinction I mentioned earlier. “Into the house.” Obviously, our Most Holy Theotokos had left that place by then. Indeed, a considerable time had passed. Do you know how long it was before the Magi arrived? About two years, as we can infer from the slaughter of the children. Herod slaughtered those two years old and under, “according to the time which he had carefully determined from the Magi.” He had learned that they had seen the star about two years earlier, and he gave his order on the basis of that time.

The infants of Bethlehem and the surrounding region, two years old and under, were slaughtered, according to the time Herod had carefully determined from the Magi. The Magi were coming from Arabia; their company could not possibly have arrived so quickly. What means of travel could they have used? First they had to discuss what they had seen, then make their decision, and then prepare for the journey. These learned gentlemen may also have had an escort with them. They would have set out on camels, using the primitive means available in those days, consulting maps and so forth. Those maps were not precise. So they traveled in search of the place, reached Palestine, sought out Judea, and went there. All this certainly required time, and we have no reason to claim otherwise.

Did He leave immediately for Egypt, as some say? He could not have left at once. If He departed for Egypt immediately after Herod’s threat, when was our Christ circumcised? After eight days Christ was taken to the Temple and received circumcision. That is what the Evangelists tell us. Where, then, was He? If He had gone to Egypt, did He come back again? And where did the Most Holy Theotokos observe her forty-day purification at the Presentation? How was she in the Temple? The Evangelists give us both the events in the Temple and the flight into Egypt. Therefore Christ was still there; He had not yet departed. He left later. When the persecution came two years afterward, He went away—a Child now able to be carried in the arms of the Most Holy Theotokos, with Joseph’s help—and fled to Egypt. You may be hearing these details for the first time, because the force of habit has inclined us

to remain on the surface. We have never seriously examined the details, connected them, drawn the conclusions, and spiritually entered into that time. If we laid out the periods and events carefully, we would discover these things and come much closer to them. Yet we Orthodox Christians have not drawn near to them, and they do not move us. “We learned all that at school,” we say, and leave it there.

In any case, this proves once again that the star was miraculous and was an instrument of God. These men arrived, and with the star’s help they were led to the place where it stood above the Child. Here we are told that the Child was in a house. It appears, then, that after the eight days, the forty days, and all the rest had passed, our Most Holy Theotokos did not return to Nazareth.

It seems that she no longer had parents there; they may have already fallen asleep in the Lord. Elder Joseph also appears to have had nothing there. And because the Child had been born in Bethlehem, they regarded the place as holy and thought it would be good to remain there. It seems they either rented some little place or were given hospitality in a small house or hut. They remained there until the persecution came afterward. When Christ returned from Egypt—after seven years there in exile, according to some—He went to Nazareth, so that, as the prophets said, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” The account now gives us this detail: “They found Him, and falling down, they worshiped Him.” This is already a profound matter of faith.

Does this tell us something about faith? Show us an example of faith.

Here is faith: educated and learned men worship a Child who bears no outward sign of greatness. In every visible respect He is a child like all other children, beside a mother who nurses Him and cares for Him. What more can be seen? Yet they worship Him, and not merely as some great man. First of all, they worship Him as King, for the account says: “And opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” These three gifts

give special emphasis to His person, showing that He is no ordinary person, no mere man. They worship Him with gold as King; with myrrh as One who is to die. Myrrh, as you may know, was an aromatic, adhesive substance used in burials. They anointed the body with it and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. This is why the linen cloths lying in Christ’s tomb are evidence that Christ rose; they are witnesses of the Resurrection. Since they had been stuck to His body, how could thieves have removed them,

and why would they have removed them instead of carrying the body away in them? Were they too heavy? Myrrh is both a fragrant essence and an adhesive substance, rather like resin. Once it sets, the linen cloth becomes as firm as reinforced concrete around the body. So they offered gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Frankincense was offered to Him as God. The myrrh showed that He would die and become a sweet fragrance, and that God would accept this sacrifice. And to whom do they offer all this? To a little Child. Where do you discern His kingship? Where do you discern His divinity? And how do you, wise man from the East, discern that He will die? This is faith. I do not see these things with my bodily eyes. I see only a Child.

But I see with the eyes of my soul, because I have been miraculously guided. I have come here after traveling for two years, leaving my teaching chair and my home behind. I hold fast to faith, and this faith is true, because through His star He revealed to me His appearance here on earth. This is one aspect of faith, one illustration, one powerful example. Another enduring example of faith is that of the thief on Christ’s right. Though crucified beside Him, he confessed Him as Lord and King, saying, “Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your Kingdom.” But He looks like a criminal too—why call Him Lord? And yet, with the eyes of his soul, the thief discerns that this Man is not a criminal like himself.

Did the sun not hide its rays because of Him? Did the earth not quake because of Him? The thief sees these things, perceives their meaning, and says to himself, “Surely this is happening because of the Man in the middle.” That is why he speaks to the thief on the left and says, “We are receiving what we deserve for what we have done. But this Man in the middle has done nothing, yet He suffers as we do, though we have done evil.” So the faith of these men, the Magi, is likewise a classic example that remains for all time. The eyes of the soul are one thing, and the eyes of the body another. Sometimes you see a man or woman in love, while you, as a detached observer, look and ask, “What did you see in him? What did you find in her?” Borrow that person’s eyes

and look at the beloved through them; then tell me what was seen. You look outwardly, and your own eyes see things in that way. But the eyes of that man’s or woman’s soul see differently. That is the point. So do not always subject everything to the proof of a microscope. The soul also receives revelations of its own. Here, for example, these men came from Arabia to worship a God who would die and whose sacrifice would be a sweet-smelling offering to God the Father. Reason, too, can draw these conclusions by considering the meaning of their gifts, and the Fathers teach this as well. Gennadius, for example, says exactly what I have told you: “Gold as to a King, myrrh as to One who would die, and frankincense as to God.”

Another says of Him, “The Lord of the inhabited world,” and, “To Him shall be given of the gold of Arabia.” David says that gold from Arabia would be given to the One who was to be born. He wrote this in Psalm 71, 1,050 years before Christ: “To Him shall be given of the gold of Arabia.” They would bring gold from Arabia and offer it to Him. Before I conclude this section, there is something else we should notice and remember: how Christ was found. These men found Him because Heaven revealed Christ to them. If God had not shown that star to these men—who evidently had pure hearts despite being men of learning—

they would not have found Him. They had left an open space within themselves, a door, an entrance. Unfortunately, we close that door. Anything we cannot see, touch, taste, smell, or hear, we reject. We supposedly proceed only by the five senses, by what is certain. This is rather absurd, because there are many things we neither touch, hear, nor see, and yet we use them and believe in them. So what were the means by which Christ was revealed? Heaven revealed Him through the star. What other means did this foundation of truth employ? What did the earth provide? The earth provided Holy Scripture. The star informed them that He had been born, but then it also gave authority to Holy Scripture: “Look into Holy Scripture, and it will tell you where He was born. I have written it down for you.” Do you always expect revelations and miracles?

It is written. Do you remember how Abraham answered the formerly rich man who was suffering in Hell? The man said, “Father Abraham, send Lazarus to my father’s house. I have five brothers; let him speak to them so that they may repent.” Abraham answered, “No. They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.” They have the books of Moses and the Prophets to read. “No, Father Abraham,” the man replied. “They do not read them. But if they see someone risen from the dead, then they will believe.” Abraham answered, “If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” Do you know the power of Holy Scripture?

Among a hundred Christians, it is doubtful whether even one reads Holy Scripture—whether even one truly reads it. I do not say studies it, but merely reads it, because perhaps only one in a thousand studies Holy Scripture. The others simply read across it, pass over it superficially, merely to gain an impression or taste something. Yet Holy Scripture requires study, the connecting of passages, and help from those who are more experienced and tested, especially with difficult passages, if we are to enter its depths. Every time you read it, you discover something you had not noticed before, and you say, “I have read this so many times. How is it that I see it only now?” Now it has been revealed to you. For Holy Scripture and the words written within it are Christ. There Christ was present in the flesh; here Christ is present in Holy Scripture. The Gospel is Christ.

“These are they which testify of Me.” Christ is here, because He came in the flesh and departed, yet He remained upon the written page so that He might always be with us. And among a hundred Christians, one reads Holy Scripture; among a thousand, one studies it. Yet people read so many other books and materials, learn so many other languages, and keep up with the development of some field of knowledge—and rightly so. But Holy Scripture is a work that neither changes nor receives additions or revisions. For twenty-five centuries it has remained the same, and it remains the same into eternity. It was not written merely by men, as though it needed improvement; God wrote it. Not even its enemies succeeded in altering it. They interpret it in their own way, but they have not changed it. Its words remain forever the same. What is needed, then, is the prayer:

“Illumine me, that I may see what You have written.” Revelation, the star, and Holy Scripture—through these you find Christ. And when you find Christ, everything changes. For when a person is willing to make even the small effort that lies within his power, God immediately intervenes. He sends you an angel; He sends you a guiding star and leads you where you need to go, so that you may be united with Him even in this world. This section of the whole Christmas Gospel concludes as follows: “And being warned by God in a dream,” the Magi—who had received Herod’s order to return and tell him if they found the Child, so that he too might go—were instructed otherwise. They had evidently arrived at Bethlehem, which was fourteen kilometers away, and probably remained there throughout the day,

unless they had left for Bethlehem very early that morning. They stayed there that night, intending to depart the next day, return from Bethlehem, and perhaps begin the long journey home. But that night they were warned in a dream “not to return to Herod.” They were not to go back to him. “They departed for their own country by another way.” How did they believe at once? How had they come to recognize the authority of this King? How did they believe that He was greater than an earthly king? This is what happens in pure souls. Many people wonder, “I had a dream; was it from the good one or from the evil one?” But when God speaks to His people, whose hearts are wholly devoted to Him, He speaks in such a way that they know with complete certainty that it is He.

They did not need to find an interpreter of dreams, nor did they need to ask Mrs. Tasia from the neighborhood to explain what they had seen. They knew with certainty that it was from God. It was the same with the shepherds, who said, “Let us go over.” Let us go, they said, and see this thing that God has made known to us, that the Lord has revealed to us. They believed that it was from God. The same happened with the Magi. They truly departed “by another way to their own country” and, as the hymnographer of the Akathist Hymn so beautifully writes, they left Herod behind in his senseless raving. There he remained, open-mouthed and waiting. From that point, other events begin: Herod’s fury, his command for the massacre,

and Christ’s flight into Egypt. God made Himself the lesser and fled from the presence of Herod. This is another stumbling block for those who approach everything through human reasoning and demand forceful solutions. “He was God,” they say, “yet He let Herod do all these things.” But things are not as some people say. They are very different. God does not see things in that way. He desired even Herod’s soul. Though Herod launched his persecution, God still gave him the opportunity to repent. He desired Judas’s soul as well. He gave Judas the opportunity to repent, while also leaving him without excuse: “I let you act; I endured you; I accepted the massacre and so many insults, in order to help you repent. You did not benefit. At least you will not stand before Me tomorrow and say that you would have repented. I gave you the opportunity, and you did not repent.”

God did not allow Herod to die a natural death, as I told you earlier. He became so swollen and so eaten by worms that they even had to tear down the doorway in order to carry him out. These, then, are roughly the events connected with the night whose celebration we are approaching. As for the rest, God willing, we shall discuss them next Wednesday, the one Wednesday still remaining before the feast. In any case, the night of Christmas is something beautiful for a person, and he experiences it differently when he knows these things, so to speak, and especially if he has gone there himself, has seen the places, and has brought his faith and his knowledge together. For where knowledge ends, faith begins.

And yet knowledge is also needed again. In other words, when faith and knowledge come together, the work becomes complete. I pray that God will one day count you worthy to go there. So, let us stop here, and may God be our helper.

Συνεχίζοντας, αναφέρει το πώς αισθάνθη ο Ηρώδης όταν άκουσε αυτή την πληροφορία. «Ακούσας δε Ηρώδης ο βασιλεύς εταράχθη και πάσα Ιεροσόλυμα μετ' αυτού». Πάσα Ιεροσόλυμα είναι η δική του, δηλαδή οι υπασπιστές του, οι υπουργοί του, η κυβέρνησή του δηλαδή, οι άνθρωποί του. Όταν έμαθαν ότι αναζητούν γεννηθέντα, άρα γεννήθη βασιλιάς άλλος και εμείς δεν το ξέρουμε, κινδυνεύει η βασιλεία η δικιά μας. «Και πάσα Ιεροσόλυμα μετ' αυτού, και συναγαγών πάντας τους αρχιερείς και γραμματείς του λαού, επυνθάνετο παρ' αυτών πού ο Χριστός γεννάται». Εκάλεσε αυτούς τους γραμματισμένους και τους έχοντας τον νόμο και τους προφήτες στα χέρια· από τα χαρτιά τους τι βγαίνει;

Ξέρετε, ήταν τότε 14 χιλιόμετρα από τα Ιεροσόλυμα, σήμερα είναι 12 με την ευθυγράμμιση των οδών. «Και πέμψας αυτούς εις Βηθλεέμ είπε· πορευθέντες ακριβώς εξετάσατε περί του παιδίου, επάν δε εύρητε, απαγγείλατέ μοι, όπως καγώ ελθών προσκυνήσω αυτό». Αυτό ψέματα με Ψ κεφαλαίο. Δεν ήταν αυτός ο σκοπός του. Απεδείχθη εκ των υστέρων ότι δεν είναι αυτός ο σκοπός του. Πηγαίνετε, λέει, εσείς. Εσύ γιατί δεν πηγαίνεις; Γιατί έβαλες όλη την κακία, μηχανορράφησες, έκαμες σχέδια αμέσως, να καταστρέψεις κόσμο, δουλειά, και δεν πηγαίνεις μόνος σου να έχεις μια ιδία γνώμη;

άφηναν ένα κενό στον εαυτόν τους, μια πόρτα, μια είσοδο. Γιατί εμείς, δυστυχώς το λέγω αυτό, κλείνουμε. Κάθε τι που δεν το βλέπουμε, κάθε τι που δεν το απτόμεθα, κάθε τι που δεν το γευόμεθα, κάθε τι που δεν το οσφραινόμεθα, κάθε τι που δεν το ακούμε, το αποκλείομεν εμείς. Εμείς βαδίζουμε δήθεν με τις πέντε αισθήσεις, με τα βέβαια. Πολύ αστείο, γιατί πολλά πράγματα ούτε τα πιάνουμε, ούτε τα ακούμε, ούτε τα βλέπουμε και λοιπά, και εντούτοις τα χρησιμοποιούμε και τα πιστεύουμε. Εντούτοις, έρχομαι εν προκειμένω και λέγω: Τι είναι οι τρόποι; Απεκαλύφθη ο Χριστός. Απεκαλύφθη από τον Ουρανό διά του αστέρος. Τι άλλο συνδυασμό χρησιμοποίησε αυτός ο στυλοβάτης; Η γη τι έδωσε; Η γη έδωσε τη Γραφή. Ναι μεν να μας πληροφορεί ότι εγεννήθη, αλλά και ο άλλος δίνει αξία στη Γραφή. Για κοιτάξτε τη Γραφή να σας πει πού εγεννήθη. Σας το έχω γραμμένο. Περιμένετε πάντοτε αποκαλύψεις και θαύματα;

Γεγραμμένα. Θυμόσαστε πώς απήντησε ο Αβραάμ στον ποτέ πλούσιο, ο οποίος εκολάσθη; Λέει: «Πάτερ Αβραάμ, πέμψον Λάζαρον στην οικία του πατρός μου. Έχω», λέει, «πέντε αδελφούς, να τους μιλήσει να μετανοήσουν». Και ο Αβραάμ του λέει: «Όχι, ἔχουσι», λέει, «Μωσέα και Προφήτας, ἀκουσάτωσαν αὐτῶν». Έχουν, λέει, βιβλία του Μωσέως και Προφήτας να διαβάσουνε. «Οὐχί, πάτερ Αβραάμ», λέει, «όχι», λέει, «δεν διαβάζουν», λέει, «αυτοί. Αν δούνε», λέει, «κάποιον από εδώ νεκραναστημένον, τότε», λέει, «θα πιστέψουν». Και απαντά: «Εἰ Μωσέως καὶ Προφητῶν οὐκ ἀκούουσιν, οὐδ' ἐάν τις ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῇ πεισθήσονται». Ξέρετε τι δύναμη έχει η Γραφή;
