Summary

Entering 1975 is attributed not to personal merit, health, or strength, but to God’s providence, mercy, and knowledge of each person’s appointed time. Christ, portrayed as the vinedresser in the parable of the barren fig tree, intercedes for sinners and grants additional time so that God’s patience may lead them to repentance. Spiritual renewal requires covering others’ faults with love, patiently enduring injustice, and learning to say no to sin as Moses and Joseph did.

Once again, may you have a good year, and may the new year be blessed by our Lord. God’s goodness and patient endurance have granted us passage into the new year, though perhaps we did not deserve it. Yet it seems that it was necessary for us to enter it. We did not deserve it, because many among our friends and in our wider circle would also have wished and longed to see 1975, but they did not. So let no one think that we were more capable, holier, or worthier, and that this is why we saw 1975 and were counted worthy to set foot in it, as we say. All these things are ordered by the providence of God. Many think they are still here while others have departed because they looked after their health, went to the baths, had medical checkups, watched their diet, and so forth. But that is a mistake; it is pride. A person must know that there is Someone above who orders all things and knows when each one must depart. He is the true gardener, who knows when to gather everything from His garden.

And some fruits are gathered before they are ripe, so that they may ripen in storage. At times God intervenes in this way; He often puts forth His hand and gathers many of us at a time when we do not expect it, because He knows things we cannot even imagine. Of course, I am not speaking about the madness of the world. I am not speaking about those who go voluntarily. You see, they go on their own and knock at God’s door, because there are people who themselves knock at God’s door. God does not come and knock at theirs. They go to Him themselves and say, “We have come.” We have such cases too. Indeed, one occurred here at the Isthmus near Loutraki on the eve of Saint Basil’s feast, the night before last.

Some young men came from a village to Athens to celebrate. Their car went under a truck, and all three were crushed. They went and knocked at God’s door; God did not send for them. They acted recklessly, with the consequence of sin, which is death—both bodily and spiritual. Such cases do occur. But when we say that a person lives his natural course of life, takes care, does not expose himself needlessly, and does not put God to the test, then that person departs from this world precisely when he ought to. And only God, in His all-wise knowledge and love, knows what that “ought” means. Many among us, then, have departed. Just yesterday morning, a woman we knew was on her way to Church in Kallithea when a car sent her into the other world.

There are cases, I dare say, that accompany obedience. Perhaps God wished to add yet another crown to hers, and she departed as a martyr. Forgive me; that is another matter. One thing is true, and it is the one thing a person must take care to remember: he must not trust in himself, in his youth, in his health, in his wallet, in his strength, in his intelligence or ability, in those around him, or in anyone at all, but in God alone. Such a person will not fail and will lose nothing. By contrast, all those who are swayed by this world find that they have been deceived. A moment comes when they can no longer resist, and they surrender. Thank you.

If a person fails at that decisive moment, it would have been better for him not to have been born. The preparation offered by the Church for this year was entirely spiritual. The great feasts of Christianity, the days of Christmas, were a preparation and a cleansing for each person, so that he might enter the new year somehow changed. It is true that many entered the new year as new people. It is equally true that many entered it still wearing the soiled garment of the old year. Among the various images the ancients devised in order

to symbolize the old and the new year, they fashioned a man with two faces, as people would say today. Seen from one side, he appeared as an elder: disheveled, wrinkled, dirty, sullen, and stooped. Seen from the other side, he appeared as a young man, handsome, dignified, clean, and beautiful. He symbolized the year that had departed and looked toward the new year that had now arrived. If many Christians kept this image in mind, perhaps they would wish to reshape themselves in this sense, so that we might enter the new year somehow changed.

On the night when the year changed, many wished to welcome it and stayed awake with a gathering around a table. Some played cards; others ate and drank; others combined eating and drinking with cards and dancing; others gave themselves over to corruption; and so on. Thus they waited to welcome the new year. When they heard over the radio, “Beep, beep, beep—Greek time, twenty-four hundred hours,” they turned off the lights. They remained in darkness briefly, and soon heard, “One minute into 1975,” and turned the lights on again. They embraced and exchanged suitable wishes and kisses; some shook hands, while others stood and drank toasts, and so forth. In this way they welcomed the new year. They drew a dividing line between one year and the next—a black line of darkness. “We close you, 1974, and open upon a new and radiant year, full of wishes, hopes, and blessings.” But they reckoned without the Host. It is a great and fanciful error. Sadly, it is committed not only by people who are strangers to the truth and to Christ, but also by some so-called Christians, who say they are religious but practise religion in their own way. These people attend Church but have not confessed; they attend Church but do not receive Holy Communion.

They attend Church, yet for years they have not even said good morning to their brother. They are people who have wronged others and have not restored what they unjustly took. They still covet what belongs to others: other people’s possessions, property, and even persons. Their burden is especially heavy, because they were given an opportunity, in some measure, to learn the truth of these things. The others are unfortunate and pitiable, because they have not yet wished to open their eyes and see where true happiness and blessedness are found. People exchanged blessings and good wishes. As you know, there were telephone calls, telegrams, cards, gifts—what did not take place during these days? Yet despite all these wishes, the world is unhappy. The world is anxious, afraid, and in despair.

People suffer from nervous disorders and cannot sleep. The asylums and everything else are overflowing. There are suicides every day and a thousand other forms of misery. There is no family life; there is no love. There is erotic passion and corruption, a satanic kind of love, not the love of God. Why are all these things happening? Why all of this? Because the wishes are made without the Host; they are made without Christ. No matter how many good wishes or blessings you offer me, and no matter how many I offer you, we remain outside reality. A person’s wish ought rather to be, for example, “May God find you at a blessed hour.” Such wishes remind a person that he does not remain here forever; here he has no lasting city.

He seeks the city that is to come. Many people lack this inward awareness. If a person turns to the Word of God to discover what God says, whom God calls blessed, and to whom He gives His blessing, he will be ashamed of what takes place during these holy days, even among Christians. One beatitude stands above all the others and, for me, is the highest: “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered.” These are the blessed. Whether they continue to live here or not, they will live in eternity.

All who live in Christ also live beyond the grave. Yet many living dead entered the new year—many living dead, many moving cemeteries. Yes, from a human point of view they did not deserve to enter it, but this is God’s dispensation. For what is taught in the parable of the fig tree is always being fulfilled: the owner came seeking fruit and found none. He said that it should wither: “Cut it down, for it is using up the ground as well.” And it is true that many of us are harmful both to ourselves and to those around us. We are not beacons of light but signals of darkness, and by our lives we lead weak people astray. Yet the parable says that the vinedresser intervened.

He said, “I beg you, let us not cut down the fig tree. Leave it for this year also.” Who is the vinedresser, and who is the fig tree? Each one of us is that fig tree. And the vinedresser is Christ, who intercedes before the justice of God the Father and says, “Leave Dimitris for this year too. Leave Yannis; leave Giorgos; leave Katina. Let us dig around the tree and put manure at its roots. If it bears fruit, well and good; if it does not, we shall cut it down next year.” And God’s justice yields because the vinedresser has pleaded. Christ steps into the midst, and we ride triumphantly into the new year. Then we imagine that those who departed were the sinners, while we who remain are the saints. That is a mistake.

It is the mercy of God that covers us. Christ stands before God’s justice, and blessed is the person who benefits from this opportunity, because, according to Paul, this goodness and patient endurance of God lead us to metanoia, to repentance. There is some reason, both personal and more general, for our remaining, because there are also people who are needed

for a certain time within their family, their surroundings, the Church, or society, and God knows why. We do not know, and we must not rush to form opinions on these matters. We should accept them exactly as He ordains them. Blessed, then, is the one “whose transgressions are forgiven and whose sins are covered.” The other person is not blessed. What good is it for him to live many years if it never occurs to him to change his life and repent? Listen to what someone said to me a little earlier: “Let us give a present to the couple living in an illicit union.” What blessing am I to write for them? We usually write a few words on a gift we give. What will your wish be? “May you continue living with your concubine”? Or, “May you continue living with the man who corrupts you”? What can you wish them? What can you say? “May you live long and remain just as you are”? How can you phrase such a thing?

Tell me how you would manage it. Yes, sometimes we find ourselves in such difficult situations, and many of us are ashamed to speak the truth. Taking this opportunity, I must tell you that we need to speak the truth in the proper way and at the proper time, before it is too late. I once read about a man who went to visit his neighbor, who had fallen ill and was in his final moments. The neighbor was an unbeliever. He had no faith in matters of religion and so forth. In any case, the man went to him at the last moment and said, “You know, you must believe, repent, and confess. You may be about to depart.” The sick man replied, “To me, all of that is nothing but fairy tales.” His neighbor said, “No, they are not fairy tales.”

“If they were not fairy tales but the truth, we have been neighbors for twenty-six years. Why did you not tell me all these years? Why do you come to tell me now, when I am departing? Antichrist!” And he drove him away. “We have been together for twenty-six years,” he said, “and this is the first time he has spoken to me about this, now that he sees me dying.” Those twenty-six years place a great responsibility upon us. There are many people around us for whom God expects us to play some part. Not to save them, but to remind them, to bring them some light, whether by word or deed. We might send them a book anonymously, pray for them, fast for them, and struggle on their behalf.

Who knows? During those twenty-six years he might have won that man over. He could not know. Instead, he went to speak to him at the very last moment. “I have no time left at all,” the man told him. “But if what you are telling me is true, and you believed it throughout the twenty-six years we were neighbors, why did you never tell me anything?” Yes. So there are many details for which we who entered 1975 bear responsibility, and the Lord has His reasons for leaving us here. Blessed, then, is not the person who entered 1975 as dark as he had been in 1974, but the one whose transgressions were forgiven and whose sins were cleansed. Listen to another beatitude, one that we do not always keep in mind: “Blessed is the man who has not stumbled through his own counsel.” Here is a blessed class of people. You will have read this as well.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” Here are people worthy to be called blessed. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Here is another class to which we do not belong either, because many of us have made no effort to be reconciled either with God or with our neighbor.

We have forgotten. We have forgotten, and we rest content with the thought that we are good people. Yes, but we must also become Christians. “Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it.” This is another beatitude. We hear the Word of God and, while we are in the hall or the Church, we say, “Good.” But once we step outside the door, our “good” becomes “but.” We place the word “but” in front of the “good” we spoke inside: “But, but who can do these things? Are such things possible today?” Yes, they are.

Another beatitude says, “Blessed are all who put their trust in Him.” Count them on your fingers: who are those who hope in Him? Who? Those who govern the earth? Those who govern us? We ourselves? Who are they? How many put Him first, take Him into account, and reckon with Him in everything they do, whether they are rulers of peoples or those who are ruled? People act blindly and reckon without the Host. The great powers trust in their weapons and their might, while others trust in the black gold beneath their soil, in their oil—not in Him.

A person is blessed if he puts his faith in Him. There is another saying as well, a sorrowful one in view of our present state: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”—the true God. These are the blessed, not simply those whom we bless with our good wishes, nor are we blessed simply because others wish us well. If we possess these qualities, then surely we are, in some measure, among the blessed. But today these signs are absent from most people—and not merely from people in general, but even from Christians. We have Christians today who fashion a little religion of their own, measure everything by their own standard, shut God out, and look for some way to cling to this world, even though He has the power to tear us away from it.

No matter how tightly we bind ourselves to this world, by whatever lawful or unlawful means, He can tear us away. There is a fault even among so-called Christians, and those who have carried this fault with them into the new year should take heed. We are always looking at what belongs to others and desiring it. We are not content with what is ours. There are Christians who have never paid attention to this. They look at another person’s house; at another person’s wife, daughter, husband, or child; at another person’s wallet, land, or garden—always what belongs to someone else. And the other person is looking at what belongs to us. This is what happens. This tendency exists within man.

It is wholly unchristian: that condition we call discontentment. A painter once portrayed it in this way. He made a large painting and divided it down the middle with a hedge—not wire or a wall, but a hedge of trees, like those people make in villages to separate their gardens so that one family’s chickens do not cross into the other’s. Whatever one side of the property had, the other side had as well. The two sides were equal in every respect. On each side there was also a horse. And what had happened? The horse in one field had stretched its head through the hedge and was eating grass from the other field.

The horse in the other field had also stretched its head through and was eating grass from its neighbor’s field. Yet each field had plenty of good, clean grass for its own horse to eat. Neither horse ate from its own field; each ate from the other’s. Underneath, the painter had written: “The discontented: they are not satisfied with what is their own.” And there are many of us—many among the so-called Christians—who could be taught by these horses. Let us take heed, return our attention to ourselves, and be content with what is ours. For many who reach out in this way do so because they have no fear of God.

They do not fear God, take God into account, or consider that God sees them. Because they manage to escape the notice of the authorities and evade the law, they imagine that God does not see them either. Since other people do not see them and the matter is never brought before human justice, they suppose that it does not exist before God as well. And so they continue along the road of sin. On this point, I will tell you the following story. Once, a father sent his two little children to take a parcel to his mother—their grandmother. The great feast days had come, and he said to them, “Come, little George and Leni, take this parcel to your grandmother and come straight back.” The children took the parcel and set off for their grandmother’s house. But on the way, little George became curious about what was inside it. He persuaded the little girl to stop with him somewhere and open the parcel to see what it contained. They found that it was full of sweets. George’s mouth watered. “Let’s each eat one.” The little girl said, “No. Grandmother will count them. Grandfather may already have counted them.” “Let’s each have one,” he said. “They won’t notice. Grandmother doesn’t know arithmetic. Let’s eat one each.”

But the little girl said to him, “All right, George, Grandmother may not know arithmetic—but doesn’t God know arithmetic?” George froze. They put everything back, tied up the parcel, and delivered it. Why? Because God knows arithmetic. Grandmother might not have noticed that two sweets were missing, and perhaps their father and mother had not counted them when they prepared the parcel. But God knows how to count. George’s heart sank when he realized that God could see them, and so the children did not eat the sweets. If we—the supposedly worthy ones who entered 1975—paid attention to this little detail, we would not have carried so many things with us that we do not count, but that God does count.

Thank you. My beloved, God keeps another ledger, one which, unfortunately, we know nothing about. Many tradesmen, besides their official account books, keep another secret book. They keep the official books for the tax authorities, but not the hidden one. In the same way, besides everything we keep out in the open, God has His own hidden book, which He will reveal on the last day. If we are willing to examine ourselves objectively in regard to what I mentioned earlier—our discontentment—and if we examine ourselves objectively in regard to what I have just said—that God knows arithmetic very well—we will catch ourselves guilty. But are these the only things we carried with us from...

1974 into 1975, or are there others? I said earlier that many of us have neither perfect love for God nor perfect love for our fellow man, although God desires this love to be perfect and selfless, free of calculation, filled with humility, and willing to accept loss and bear the cost ourselves. This is the love He desires and requires. And He has both the power and the means to reward us at the proper time and exactly as He sees fit. What excuse do I have for not forgiving someone for something he did to me, some injustice he committed against me, or something he said? It is because I have no love. If I had love, I would try to cover his fault. But not only do I refuse to cover it; I discuss it and publicly shame him before every acquaintance and throughout the neighborhood.

I even go to court to obtain what I consider my due. How far such a person is from Christianity! As I have said before, there are two classes of people in this world: victims and victimizers. Let us strive to be among the victims and never among those who victimize others. But we are weak, unfortunately, and we do not even want to become strong. So we often resort to various means, including the courts, in order to obtain satisfaction. Yet we do not realize, as I have told you before, that sometimes we suffer injustice because we owe a debt and are now paying what remained unpaid from another time. Back then, we escaped like wasps escaping from a spider’s web.

As you know, the spider of human justice catches the flies, while the wasps escape. But the justice of God is different. It requires love from man: love that covers another person’s faults and forgives him. We, however, have learned to be severe with others and lenient with ourselves. These terms must be reversed. We must be strict with ourselves, excusing nothing in ourselves, while forgiving even the strangest things in others. Then we will find mercy in the sight of God. Once, a painter wished to make a portrait of Alexander the Great. But Alexander the Great had a scar here, from a wound.

If the painter depicted him with the scar, he would do the monarch an injustice by diminishing his beauty. But if he painted him without the scar, the portrait would not be true to life. What, then, could he do? He decided to portray Alexander holding his face in such a way that his hand covered the blemish. And that is how he painted him. He neither misrepresented him nor exposed the wound; he covered it in this way. I do not know whether you have visited the Achilleion in Corfu, where there is an image of the Kaiser. Something was wrong with the Kaiser’s hand; perhaps he had only one functioning hand—I do not know. Notice how he holds the defective hand when he is photographed.

If you do not know about it, you will not notice anything. But if you do know, you can see that something is there. What that painter did is what every Christian must do with the faults of others. It is true that many people around us bear scars. They are not as they should be; they are not upright. But if we have love, we must cover their scars. We must not expose them, make a spectacle of them, publicly shame them, or cast them away. They have this scar—what of it? Can they take my soul from me? They cannot take my soul unless I surrender it. Do you not hear people say that they want to become holy but cannot, because wicked people keep getting in their way? But it is precisely the wicked who will help make us holy. Can a person become holy without someone difficult in his life?

Without a difficult mother, a difficult mother-in-law, a difficult daughter-in-law, a difficult neighbor, a difficult business partner, and so forth, how will you become holy? Where will your holiness be formed? Will you become holy among people who are all good to you? You will remain untested. It is beside the difficult person that you will become holy: beside the one who wrongs you, the one to whom you do good and who gives you bitterness to drink. There your patient endurance, forbearance, and kindness will be measured. What will you show? That when you are given bitterness, you add honey, and when you are given vinegar, you add water? Merely paying him back in kind, putting him in his place while losing your own proper place—this brings no spiritual benefit. It is not Christianity, not true Christianity. Many people have therefore failed as Christians, because they have not attended to these details—details that hinder the grace of God from working in man.

Thus the kindness and forbearance of God have carried us, as I have told you, onward on this side of the grave. But there is one more thought that should govern the Christian: he must not always say “Yes”; he must also learn to say “No.” For we are always giving way. If Moses had not said no, for example, would he have become the Moses we know? If he had not said no to the royal palace and no to Pharaoh, would he have been Moses? If Joseph had not said no to the corrupt wife of Potiphar, would he have become Joseph the All-Comely, the type—the foreshadowing—of our Lord Jesus Christ?

On Great Monday, the Church proclaims, “We commemorate Joseph the All-Comely.” Why does she do so? Why is he placed there? What does it mean? He is a type of Christ, and that is why the Church sets him before us. Would he have become such a type if he had not said no? Unfortunately, we do not understand these things. We say no in other circumstances, but we do not say no to sin. We do not say no to pleasure. We fail to do what is necessary so that the time added to our life may be used for our spiritual benefit. You may have heard the tale about a magical garment. Whenever a man wore it, he obtained whatever he desired, every pleasure he wanted. But each time he indulged in a pleasure, the garment tightened around him a little more. He obtained whatever he wanted, certainly, but the garment kept growing tighter, until at last it strangled him and...

he died. He suffered like Annas—one of those three men, along with Caiaphas—whom they placed inside an animal hide and cast out under the sun. As the hide dried and tightened, he died of suffocation within it. Many of us suffer the same fate because we have never learned to say no from time to time. We say, “Well, yes; this one thing does not matter, nor does that one. Surely God is not harsh,” and so on and so on. The result is that man finally comes to his death. What is especially degrading for the person who does not say no to sin but says yes is that he has never considered how much that sin costs.

Sin is the most costly thing on earth, if we may call it a thing. It is not diamonds, as people say, nor anything else they value. It is sin, which Satan sells in exchange for a person’s life—both his temporal life and his eternal life. For sin brings both temporal death and eternal death. Has man ever considered this? Where is his reason, his progress, his supposed superiority? Has he ever thought about it? He has never thought about it. And let me tell you one more thing, which lies before me here and is related to what I am saying at this moment. There are many people...

who do not recognize their passions and sins as masters that rule them, dominate them, and hold them under tyranny. They do not see it. They do not see that they are slaves of the passions. They imagine themselves to be masters simply because the word “Mr.” is written before their name on a document or an envelope, and because people address them as “Mr. So-and-so” or “Mrs. So-and-so.” It is said that Diogenes, that plain and simple man of ours, once met Alexander the Great, and Alexander said to him:

“Diogenes, I am the master of the whole world. Do you know that?” Diogenes replied, “Alexander, though you may appear to be so, in reality you are nothing but a slave of my slaves. I am master of my passions, but you are their slave. You are the slave of my slaves. I have enslaved my passions, while you are enslaved to yours. You rule the world, but you do not rule your own passions.” Consider how much we human beings—especially we so-called Christians—need to understand this. Christ has appointed us to be lights. Others look upon us as cities set upon a hill. They look to us, yet in their cunning they search for a single fault by which they may dismiss our nine hundred and ninety-nine virtues.

Have you noticed this? They do not look for the good we do, nor do they listen to the good we say. They look for some evil we might commit or some careless act of ours. Satan points it out to them. We hear it all the time. Those who do not understand how virtue is brought to perfection demand perfection from us. People do not understand. If they did, they would not demand perfection from us either. They would know that we too are sick people in the same hospital called the Church, and that we too are trying, little by little, to heal our illnesses, so that one day we may come out of the Church restored to health.

We go to Church, make the sign of the Cross, receive Holy Communion, fast, and do other such things. So they expect us to be saints—holy physicians who can heal everyone. We are not saints, but the devil will not let them understand that. Nor have they ever drawn near to learn and be instructed about these matters as they truly are, so that they might acknowledge that we too have weaknesses. Yet we are among those who struggle. The difference is this: I must struggle against my falls, while the other person does not struggle at all. Indeed, he boasts of his falls, whereas I grieve over mine. And Christ is with the sinner who struggles; He is not even with a supposedly sinless egotist who believes that he has communion with Christ. He does not understand this. Therefore, under no circumstances should we— This is why Christ told us—pardon me, Saint John mentions this.

“Even if we keep the whole Law,” he says, “but stumble in one point, we are guilty of breaking the whole Law.” It is James who says this. Yes. It is like hanging a chandelier from a chain with one or two hundred links. If just one link breaks, the chandelier will shatter into a thousand pieces; all one hundred links do not need to break. That is exactly how it is. Satan enters through that fall, through that weakness, and brings disastrous consequences both for the person himself and for others. For Satan will publicize it, point his finger at it, and exploit it: “This is what the priests did; this is what the monks did; this is what that man did; this is what Panagopoulos did; this is what the others did. And you are preaching to me?” And so on. Yet they do not know each person’s struggle, nor do they understand that we are all liable to fall. There is no love within them to cover my weakness,

to conceal it, as that painter concealed the scar of Alexander the Great with his hand. Instead, such a person thinks he can cover his own faults by pointing to mine. But as our elders used to say, whoever takes another person’s faults to justify his own is like someone washing himself with mud. Can anyone wash himself with mud? My friend, you gain nothing by recounting and learning about another person’s faults. Look to your own poor self, and pray for the other person too, that he may stand firm and not keep falling. When Christ sees such love and sacrifice, He will help the other person as well and have mercy on him. These reflections, then, are necessary for those of us who were shown mercy and allowed to enter 1975. For one reason or another, some failed to notice the one whom Christ sent on the night of 1974

to take away their book for 1974 and place the book for 1975 into their hands. Let them take notice now. For the people, in their folk wisdom, say that there is a cupboard of time, and everything that can no longer be acted upon dies and is buried. They say, “It has gone into the cupboard of time,” and it cannot come out again. In the same way, the years pass one by one; each enters the cupboard and never comes out again. Surely no one expects 1974 to return, or 1973, 1972, 1971, 1970, and so forth. We await new years; we do not expect the old ones to return. Whatever happened in 1974 is gone, and now what happens in 1975 is being written down.

During these holy days, many had time to settle their accounts through metanoia—repentance—and confession, as you have been told in our Church. They handed over the book of 1974, with all its 365 pages made white again, its accounts settled and its pages clean. For there is no one who lives and does not sin. The difference lies in the measure of our sins: some of us sin a little and others sin greatly, but all of us sin. “You alone, O Lord, are without sin. Your righteousness is righteousness forever, and Your word is truth.” Christ alone is without sin. As Saint Mark the Ascetic says, “One is righteous through works of righteousness: Christ. Through repentance and confession,”

“many people become righteous.” One alone was sinless: Christ. As Paul says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Because of these holy days, many hastened to cleanse whatever they too, being human, had soiled—whether in word, deed, or thought. And when the year changed on the night of 1974, that book of 1974 departed clean. It was placed in the cupboard and added to the books they had handed over in previous years. Many others, however, crossed into the new year with their book still dirty. They handed it over dirty, received the new one, and continue sinning in the new year. Today we are on the second step, the second page. It is January 2. Tomorrow we ascend to the third step, the third page.

The pages open in this way and are numbered one after another. Every good thing and every evil thing is written down. God knows grammar; God knows arithmetic. God knows and understands. God records every good thing, while the devil records every evil thing. And there are countless ways in which a person is drawn into sin each day—especially through the human tongue, through our words. Once, a man was sent to a wise man with a request that he send back both the best thing and the worst thing the man possessed. The messenger carried a note folded inside an envelope: “From the man I am sending you, return to me the best thing he possesses and the worst thing he possesses.”

The wise man took him, cut out his tongue, and sent the tongue back. This is both the best and the worst thing, depending, of course, on how it is used. For when the tongue is not used rightly, it is the worst thing a person possesses. And if one reads how James describes the tongue—as a rudder, as a world belonging to Satan, as the outer fire, so to speak—one sees what the human tongue can be. But consider it from the other side: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name,” and, “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord,” and so forth. Seen from that side, nothing is more precious. The tongue is at once capable of the greatest evil and the greatest good. It all depends on how it is used. The tongue itself—this piece of skin, this flesh inside the mouth—is not to blame, poor thing.

It depends on how it is used. Yet many of us still pay no attention, even though we confess, even though we receive Holy Communion, even though we do this and that. The tongue is like a typewriter. James insists: “A man who does not stumble in speech is perfect”—not merely the person who does good deeds and the other customary things we do. And if, as I sometimes say, Christ were to come to us simply as a physician and say, as village doctors do, “Bring me a spoon, and open your mouth so that I may see your tongue,” who would come out clean? Tell me. I have not murdered; I have not stolen. But how many people have I devoured? How many priests?

How many nuns, how many monks, how many neighbors has this tongue devoured? Yes—and we have entered 1975 while claiming first place for ourselves. We are the sanctified ones, and surely, if God has no dealings with us, with whom will He have dealings? Yes, then: the goodness of God, His patient endurance, and His kindness

have granted us time to be perfected in these details. Therefore, during these days, while we are still taking our first steps, let us be sober and serious in mind. We have only just begun to climb the great staircase of 365 steps, and we are on the second. Let us consider how we may sin less. Where do we stumble? I have simply touched upon a few things that escape our notice, to give us an occasion to do as wise Solomon says: “Give an occasion to a wise man, and he will become wiser.” Each person must search the depths of his soul and examine himself. Where does he stumble? What within him is contrary to the will of God? For God waits, but He does not forget. A person must fear God and reverence Him. There is, of course, another kind of fear that is just as necessary: one must fear God, but one must also beware of the person who does not fear God. What I am telling you is true. Yet we do not pay attention to these things, and our conduct is fitting neither toward God nor toward those who do not fear Him. Why is this? Is it because we are not wise? And when I say wise, I do not mean cunning

in sin. We must not allow sin to lull us to sleep, but must conduct ourselves rightly in word and deed, so that we neither make ourselves enslaved and guilty before the judgment of God nor place obstacles in the way of others. Yes, and I pray that our Lord Jesus Christ will bless this year for His glory and for our salvation. Amen.

ορισμένον καιρό στην οικογένεια, στο περιβάλλον, στην εκκλησία, στην κοινωνία, και ο Θεός ξέρει. Εμείς δεν ξέρουμε και δεν πρέπει να σπεύδουμε να έχουμε γνώμες στα θέματα αυτά. Να τα δεχόμεθα όπως ακριβώς Αυτός θα τοποθετεί. Μακάριος λοιπόν είναι αυτός, «ὧν ἀφέθησαν αἱ ἀνομίαι καὶ ὧν ἐπεκαλύφθησαν αἱ ἁμαρτίαι». Ο άλλος δεν είναι μακάριος. Τι του έρχεται να ζήσει χρόνια πολλά και δεν του έρχεται να αλλάξει η ζωή και του έρχεται να μετανοεί; Ακούσατε τι μου είπαν γρηγορότερα. Να δώσουμε δώρο στο παράνομο ζευγάρι. Πώς θα του γράψω ευχή; Γιατί συνηθίζουμε να γράφουμε και δυο λόγια επάνω σε ένα δώρο που θα δώσουμε. Τι θα είναι η ευχή σου; Να ζεις με την παλλακίδα σου ή να ζεις εσύ με τον διαφθορέα σου; Τι να ευχηθείς, τι να πεις; Να ζείτε, να είστε οι ίδιοι; Πώς θα το βάλεις, πώς θα το φτιάξεις;

Το διακρίνεις αν δεν ξέρεις· αν ξέρεις όμως, βλέπεις ότι κάτι υπάρχει εκεί πέρα. Αυτό λοιπόν που έκαμε αυτός ο ζωγράφος πρέπει να το κάνει κάθε άνθρωπος χριστιανός στα σφάλματα των άλλων. Είναι αλήθεια ότι πολλοί στο περιβάλλον μας είναι με ουλές. Δεν είναι εντάξει, δεν είναι σωστοί. Εμείς όμως, αν έχουμε αγάπη, πρέπει να τις καλύπτουμε. Να μην τους ξεσκεπάζουμε, να μη θελήσουμε να τους θεατρίσουμε, να μη θελήσουμε να τους διαπομπεύσουμε, να μη θελήσουμε να τους διώξουμε. Έχουν την ουλή αυτήν· τι θα γίνει; Την ψυχή θα μου την πάρουνε; Δεν μου την παίρνουν την ψυχή, αν δεν τη δώσω. Δεν ακούτε τους ανθρώπους που λέγουν ότι θέλουν να αγιάσουν και δεν μπορούν να αγιάσουν γιατί τους φταίνε οι κακοί; Μα οι κακοί θα μας αγιάσουν. Χωρίς κακόν μπορεί να αγιάσει ο άνθρωπος;

δυσκολεύουν τη χάρη του Θεού στον άνθρωπο. Η χρηστότητα λοιπόν και η μακροθυμία του Θεού μάς πέρασε, όπως σας λέγω, εντεύθεν του τάφου. Αλλά, δυστυχώς, μια σκέψη ακόμη, η οποία θα πρέπει να πρυτανεύει στον χριστιανό, είναι να μην λέει πάντοτε «Ναι», να μάθει και το «Όχι». Διότι εμείς υποχωρούμε. Εάν, φερ' ειπείν, ο Μωυσής δεν έλεγε όχι, θα ήταν ο Μωυσής αυτός; Εάν δεν έλεγε όχι στα ανάκτορα τότε, όχι στον Φαραώ, θα ήταν αυτός; Εάν ο Ιωσήφ δεν έλεγε όχι στη γυναίκα τη διεφθαρμένη του Πετεφρή, θα ήταν ο Ιωσήφ ο Πάγκαλος, ο τύπος του Κυρίου ημών Ιησού Χριστού;

Αναλόγως χρήσεως. Γι' αυτό πολλοί μας πάλι δεν προσέχουμε, παρότι εξομολογούμεθα, παρότι κοινωνούμεν, παρότι, παρότι. Η γλώσσα, γραφομηχανή. Παρότι επιμένει και λέγει ο Ιάκωβος: «Ανήρ τέλειος εστίν ο μη πταίων εις γλώσσαν», όχι αυτός που κάνει το καλό και τα συνηθισμένα τα δικά μας, Και αν, όπως λέγω καμιά φορά, ο Χριστός μας έρθει απλώς ως ένας παθολόγος και ζητήσει «φέρε μου ένα κουτάλι εδώ», όπως λένε οι γιατροί των χωριών, «και άνοιξε το στόμα σου να ιδώ τη γλώσσα σου», ποιος θα βγει καθαρός; Πείτε μου. Δεν έχω σκοτώσει, δεν έχω κλέψει· πόσους έχω φάει όμως; Πόσους παπάδες;
