Summary

Christ’s visit to Martha and Mary in Bethany teaches that spiritual attentiveness must take priority over anxious material concerns. Celibacy is commended for those given freedom from worldly pressure and strength for chastity, while Christian marriage is presented as the proper path for those without that calling. The central necessity is salvation of the soul through knowing, hearing, obeying, and following Christ with humility, faithfulness, and the intercessions of the Theotokos.

Allow me this evening as well to say a few words arising from Christ’s teaching today, occasioned by His visit to the home of that blessed family in Bethany. The Gospel presents Christ to us

as a guest in a home. It presents Martha, one of the two sisters of Lazarus, the other being Mary. She was evidently the elder sister, and so she is shown welcoming this exalted guest. Then Mary also enters the scene.

At one point Martha appears somewhat irritated and angry. She has lost her self-control, and she turns to their guest and reproaches Him in a way she ought not: “Do You not care,” she says, “that she has left me to serve alone? You should have told her, ‘Go; this is no time for such things.’”

“Go over there and help her; she is tired too.” Yet Christ did not vindicate Martha, nor did He thunder against her. He did not vindicate her, but responded indirectly and with illumination, as He always does in every situation and in the face of every reaction. This is also a great lesson for us: how we ought to present the truth and our own opinion—not as teachers, but, if possible, as those who bring light. In that gentle, beautiful, indirect way, He said to her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed. One thing is needed.” What is this one thing? What is needed at this moment?

Is it not to make preparations? Do we not have a guest? Must we not go shopping and cook and do all the rest? Are we now supposed to sit down and listen to words? And yet Christ tells her that she lacked proper discernment. Mary too had chosen a portion, but her portion was spiritual, in contrast to the portion Martha had chosen, which was clearly material. He also revealed a truth that escapes many people. That is why they become entangled along the paths of this world, keep themselves extremely busy, and lose their souls. Of Mary’s portion He says, “It shall not be taken away from her.” Whatever you prepare will remain here.

Whatever Mary does, she will take with her. It endures even beyond the grave. These few words exchanged between the agitated Martha, as we might call her, and our Lord Jesus Christ contain a whole series of teachings.

It is a blessing to have Christ in one’s home. Of course, if Christ had known—and He did know—that Martha would behave toward Him in this way, one might think He would not have gone into the house. What would He go there for? To witness her irritation and shouting? Yet we fail to pay attention. Christ did not act that way then. Today, however, He does; you should know this.

He does not dwell in any soul or remain in any place where there is no calm.

Where there is no peace, no serenity, no mutual understanding, and no faith concerning the spiritual life, God is not there. Put up icons, have the blessing of water performed on the first of every month, make the sign of the Cross, and sprinkle holy water—Christ will not remain. Christ desires serenity and peace. That is precisely why He wants our prayers to follow peace and serenity, after reconciliation between ourselves and other people. Here, then, He was given an opportunity to leave us a lesson that passes unnoticed. This is the Gospel reading for the Great Paraklesis. But it goes in one ear and out the other. What comes of it? Nothing further.

Nothing at all.

Thank you. Christ had a relationship with this family. How was this family counted worthy to welcome God Himself as a guest, perhaps many times? And it is not strange that they welcomed God, for we too welcome God. When we receive Holy Communion, whom do we welcome? We welcome God. Does He not say in John, “We will come to him and make Our dwelling with him”? I will come and make My dwelling—not I alone, but My Father and the Holy Spirit as well. A person receives the whole Holy Trinity within and becomes a dwelling place of the Holy Trinity. His body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, he has no right to subject it to abuse. He has no right to make it sinful, thieving, and so forth, lest he cause the grace of the Holy Spirit to flee, drive it away, and cast it out.

This household, then, was counted worthy to receive God. And there the greatest lesson was given: there are two kinds of life, the material life and the spiritual life—the life filled with cares, worries, hardships, and afflictions, and the life free from care. For those who read, I would point out that Paul writes very illuminatingly about these two ways of life in the seventh chapter of First Corinthians. There he explains them with great skill and presents things exactly as they are. It is true, then, that God has set two ways of life before the human person, and each person must choose for himself.

God does not impose a choice. He sets before us married life and unmarried life, the life filled with cares and the life free from cares. Mary sat at His feet, the Gospel says, and concerned herself only with spiritual things. If they ate a simple tomato salad for lunch, it would not be the end of the world. “Where will I find Him again? When will I be given another opportunity to hear Him? He may come again, but there may be other people here too. What will I manage to hear then? Now it is just the two of us. I will take my fill of His presence and cling to His feet.” She was being given an opportunity, and a person must not lose such opportunities. Our time in this world is itself an opportunity, one that has consequences for eternity. A person’s life in this world,

even if it lasts 950 years, as Methuselah’s did, or 930 years, as Adam’s did, or 850 years, as others lived—many lived seven, eight, or nine hundred years, perhaps fifteen or twenty people altogether—is nothing beside eternity. It is like a firefly, like vapor: you lift the lid and a wisp of steam rises and vanishes. Such is this life, even if it were to last millions of years, compared with that other life. That is why a person passes through here only once and dies only once. He must carefully weigh how he ought to conduct himself in this world. Christ shows him the matter from different sides, but the person himself must choose; Christ does not impose the choice.

Tomorrow the person will be called to account, and each person must be responsible for his deeds. In this case there are two ways of life, as I said earlier: married life and unmarried life. Unmarried life is the spiritual way, the way in which one travels more lightly through this world. I do not know whether you have ever considered who can walk more easily and freely: someone carrying baskets, loaded down with possessions and burdens, cares and confusion, or someone holding nothing at all? It is easier for the person carrying nothing to climb Mount Olympus, because what we are speaking of is an ascent. We are going up to Jerusalem. The road through this world is an uphill road.

It is better, then, for a person to remain as free from care as possible. That is why people should always try to place themselves under someone’s guidance, so that, if possible, another may bear the greater responsibility. They should not parade their cleverness, step forward on their own, and load themselves with cares, because Satan will strike them on the head and heap those cares upon it. Obedience, freedom from worldly affairs, and celibacy are therefore the best provisions a person can choose. But they are not for everyone, and that is precisely why people often struggle and become entangled. A sober nous—the spiritual intellect—is needed in order to choose.

If a person is thinking of leaving the ways of this world behind, he should choose the life most free from care. Of course, not everyone is meant to remain unmarried; not everyone is meant to become a monk or a nun, as we used to say. Not everyone is meant to remain a virgin, although those who do receive the greatest prize and the greatest reward. But God must be asked. Sometimes a person can also test himself. This question has troubled many people, who say: “How do I know which path is mine? Do I know whether I am meant for Holy Matrimony? Do I know whether I am meant for virginity? Where do I belong? I do not know.” And yet Christ has shown you. Pay attention.

Examine whether Christ has given you two talents. Someone may ask, “What are these talents Christ has given me?” The first talent is whether you can overcome the world—whether the world, its fashions, revelries, and foolishness do not influence you. For many people, from infancy, are preoccupied with the world, with appearances, and with outward life. Leave them be; such a person is not suited to the calling we are speaking about. If, then, you have this talent and you see that another man or woman does not, why has God given this talent to you? Preserve it. He has given you one talent. The second talent is whether, with Christ’s help,

you can overcome the desires of your flesh—whether they do not preoccupy you and you can immediately tell the flesh, “Down.” If so, Christ has given you two talents. You are called to a higher life. If you have these two talents, do not delay at all; follow the celibate life, the life free from cares, in which you will be able to ascend to Heaven more quickly and easily. If you do not have these two talents, do not take a single step in that direction; enter into Holy Matrimony. Do not remain unmarried, because you will fall into sexual immorality, and God did not create sexual immorality. God established either Holy Matrimony or virginity. He did not establish fornication. The devil devised both fornication and adultery, a third way that is neither Holy Matrimony nor virginity, but a sinful life.

That path is an invention of Satan, and it will go with the devil. It is not God’s path. Do you have the strength for chastity and self-restraint? Then take this path. Do you lack that strength? Enter into Holy Matrimony. Do you want to avoid the cares of Holy Matrimony and instead take Satan’s third path? You will be condemned to Hell. Know beforehand, according to the opinion of the Fathers, what reward you will receive on that day. Suppose you enter into Holy Matrimony, take a Christian wife or a Christian husband, establish a family, and both your children and you are saved; you have as many children as God gives you and do not merely establish a family and then indulge in every other course of action. Know that you will receive thirty percent. Suppose, however, that you remain unmarried and live an upright life, as God desires.

You will receive one hundred percent. If you marry and have your children, and then, when you have finished having children, you and your spouse agree to go separately to monasteries and devote the rest of your lives to God, you will receive sixty percent. There is thirty, there is sixty, and there is one hundred percent. Many couples, after marriage, its initial pleasures, the bearing of children, and settling their family affairs, departed for cenobitic communities. They went to monasteries and lived the rest of their lives spiritually, apart from one another. These receive sixty percent. There are three states. According to Saint Isidore of Pelusium, marriage is for the earth, virginity is for Heaven, and fornication is for Hades.

That is how these things are ordered. Anyone who reflects that this world and its present form are passing away very quickly will understand that all these things will be destroyed: every civilization, every invention, and everything regarded as great today, for the enjoyment of which people sacrifice even their honor and their souls. If a person reflects that these things are passing away, then he must choose without reservation Mary’s portion, which “shall not be taken away from her.” Whatever good a person does, he must first do within his own soul. For there are people who have not put their own souls in order, yet do good outwardly. God does not accept such displays of generosity.

It is as though they were doing charitable works with stolen money. God does not accept it. God first wants the person himself to be put in order. Once a person has set his own life right and still has the means to help, then he may also do good outwardly. He may help with this or build that, and he may profess all sorts of beliefs; but if he does not set himself right, has not united himself with Christ, has not learned about Christ, and does not live the Christian life, Christ does not accept the rest. In the same way, many sinful people hold memorial services for their parents because a year has passed, or forty days, or six months. God does not accept these memorial services. “Let not the oil of a sinner anoint my head.” Are you spiritually dead, yet holding memorial services for the dead? God tells you, “See to yourself first.”

Only then should you come and do something for your departed father. First, you yourself must rise from the dead, and then come and concern yourself with your father. God accepts nothing from the living dead. Do you remember the man who asked the Lord for permission to go and bury his father? The Lord said to him, “No. Let the dead bury their own dead.” There are dead men in your village wearing neckties who can bury your father. There are many living dead. God does not accept this. The good portion is to come to know Christ, to receive Christ and become one with Christ, to follow Christ, to listen to Christ, and to do the works of Christ, so that those outside may see and God may be glorified. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and”

“glorify your Father who is in Heaven.” Let it shine in this way: do the good work with humility and do not display it. The Lord did not say, “Make a show of it,” but, “Let it shine.” Let the work speak for itself. Do not display it, or you will lose your reward. These are higher spiritual truths, difficult for a person to understand, and he must always ask for God’s help, because by himself he cannot succeed. Life does not end beyond the grave. Whatever spiritual treasure a person prepares here, he will find there beyond the grave. Whatever material thing he makes will naturally remain here, whatever it may be. Therefore, a person must never work against his own soul or waste an hour. At every moment, he could be preparing something for his soul.

He must not prefer to make something material for his body, his acquaintances, his friends, and so forth, at the expense of his soul. No, God does not accept that. A person must have discernment and know how to make good use of his time. Mary showed us this today: this is the moment. When will I have Christ with me again? If she had not received Him at that moment, then, as you will see if you read what follows, Christ was going to the Crucifixion, and she would not have had another opportunity. It was the same with the father of the demon-possessed child. If he had not reached Christ in time and found Him coming down after the Transfiguration, Christ would have gone on to the Crucifixion; the father would not have seen Him, and the child would have remained demon-possessed. A person does not know when he will depart from this world or when he will be called, as we say. He must therefore always make good use of his time.

In a fraction of a second, in just a few minutes, a person may receive revelations, illumination, even a Pentecost of his own, and many other gifts. It is a matter of sitting close to God. A person sits close to God above all when he is praying. Let us not say, “There is no time”; that is a lie. King David found time. One afternoon, while Peter was waiting for the meal to be prepared, he did not think it right to go and read a newspaper, walk into the courtyard and tend the flowers, or care for the dog and play with it outside until the table was laid. He went up to the housetop and prayed. At that moment, he saw Heaven open and something like a great sheet descending from Heaven.

God showed him an entire vision in the two or three minutes while he waited for the table to be laid. Think, then, how we use the time God gives us and how much we lose because we fail to use it attentively. Remaining at the feet of Christ brings security and eternity. For when a person is close to Christ and listens to Christ, or speaks about Christ—there are three ways, though I do not know whether you have ever considered this—one is to speak to Christ, another is for Christ to speak to you, and the third is to speak about Christ. You speak to Christ through prayer. Christ speaks to you

through reading, preaching, and chanting. You speak about God when you recount the wondrous works of God that you yourself have seen in your life and are obliged to pass on to others. Woe to those who bury the spiritual treasure they have gained through experience. We have a commandment, as Paul says—and you have probably encountered this passage: “Timothy, entrust what I have told you to others who will also be able to teach others.” God’s wondrous works must not be hidden. Knowledge must not be hidden. We must give a tithe of it. We must pay a tax, so to speak. It is the tax we owe on our knowledge, so that what remains may be preserved, just as we pay taxes to sustain the state.

We must do exactly the same in this matter. Whenever a person sits beside Christ, he is always edified and stores up a portion, a treasure for eternity. For you know that when a person departs from this world, his account is closed. He can add nothing more to it. If he has stored up something here, it will continue to yield interest. If he has stored up nothing, he cannot begin doing so there. If, for example, I labor today and, through me, people are saved and then help save others, after I depart, the interest and returns from the work I did here will continue to be credited to my account. From the work I did here. Therefore, a person must not waste this time. He must make full use of it.

There, everything has reached a fixed state. We have laid down the body, and even if we wish to work, we cannot. If we have left investments here, the returns will reach us there, and we shall continue to enjoy them until the consummation of the age, when every person’s account is finally closed. A little sound judgment is therefore needed, especially in childhood and youth, when a person is about to choose his path: “Which road should I follow? What should I do? My God, illumine me.” God will give you a green light, but He will not take you by the hand and lead you across. You must cross; you must assume responsibility. He will tell you, He will give you the green light and say, “Go,” but He will not carry you across, because you must contribute what lies within your own power. Do not expect a letter from God saying, “This is the path for you.”

“That is the path for you.” No. You will decide on the basis of what I am telling you, what you see, what you hear, and what you read. You will reflect on the transience of this world, consider your own strength, and so forth; then you will cling to God and say, “My God, I will follow You, and You guide the rest.” All these things are taught in summary within this brief encounter of Christ in that blessed home in Bethany. One thing is needful: the salvation of the soul. One thing is needful: to come to know Christ, to hear God speak to you, and to do what He says. Attend to this, then, within the measure of your strength. Attend to it during the time Christ continues to grant you. Do not lose this opportunity, because once it is lost, it is gone.

Do not exchange the Christ who comes to you in this world for other things that the world considers great and magnificent, though they are not great or magnificent at all. Everything will pass away. A great earthquake will come, a mighty thunderclap will sound, and the earth will vanish together with all the works upon it. “We look for new heavens and a new earth,” where righteousness will dwell. Blessed is the person who came to know Christ here, who spoke with Christ here, and who sat at His feet like another Mary. So whether you wish to follow the first Mary, the sister of Lazarus, or the other Mary, our Most Holy Theotokos, for whose sake these things are taking place and being said, follow her. You will be edified.

Take care also that you never become the reason your parents’ names are blasphemed. Take care. Wherever you go and wherever you stand, may people say, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, my child, and the breasts at which you nursed.” For unfortunately, because of the harm we bring upon society, many people instead say, “A curse upon the mother who bore you.”

And it compels us to turn our attention to certain things that have taken place for our sake,

things that, unfortunately, escape our notice because they have become so familiar. When we say August fifteenth, I would suggest that we ought to say Holy Week. And when we say the Dormition of the Theotokos, I believe we should think of it as another, lesser Great and Holy Friday. Unfortunately...

We, the faithful, of whom it was prophesied that we would call her blessed—“For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed”—do not fulfill this as we should. We do not participate as deeply as we might in this penthos, this mourning, and so we are not generally edified. The fifteenth of August has simply remained among all the other beautiful things, so to speak, that our faith possesses. Its setting is different, of course, because the central person is not Christ, but His Most Holy Mother. I would ask you to allow me to say a few words about her person—not, of course, beginning with her prehistory, because

it is not that the prehistory of our Most Holy Theotokos lacks a moral and doctrinal lesson necessary for us. For she is a person belonging to God and to the things of God even before mankind came into the world. I do not know whether Orthodox iconography has ever occupied your attention. If you enter a church adorned according to the Orthodox tradition, you will see that high in the dome, after Christ the Pantocrator, in the first circle among the angels—that is, among the bodiless spirits—stands our Most Holy Theotokos. A person might ask, “What is the Most Holy Theotokos doing there among them?” This shows that, in the thought of God, the Theotokos existed before she came into being, even before mankind itself came into being. That is why I say that this prehistory makes our Most Holy Theotokos even more radiant

and gives her even greater splendor. These things, of course, are lofty theology, and unfortunately they pass unnoticed among Orthodox Christians. And consider all the other things found in the hymnography concerning her person. I heard the beautiful verse chanted tonight: “Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thine ear, and forget thine own people.” Do you know what this is? It is the Annunciation.

“Hear, O daughter, and see.” Hear what I am going to tell you, and look to see where I am coming. This is the moment when David sees the Archangel going to Nazareth to announce the Annunciation to the Theotokos. “Hear what I am going to tell you, and look to see where I am coming from, for I am not the fallen angel; I am the chief angel.” And I am not from the earth. “The chief angel was sent from heaven.” I would venture to say that the prophecies, symbols, and hymns concerning the Most Holy Theotokos are, in general, more numerous than those concerning our Lord. Perhaps this may seem blasphemous—forgive me; I do not wish to shock you. But if you begin to examine them...

and see all that surrounds the Most Holy Theotokos, you will say that this is indeed the truth. More has been said about the Most Holy Theotokos than about the Lord. So great is her person. She has, then, a prehistory. From the time the first two human beings were on earth, God spoke about the Most Holy Theotokos. She is not merely a young girl whom Joachim and Anna brought onto the scene. When God said to the devil, “Because of what you have done, the seed of the woman will crush your head,” He was speaking about the Most Holy Theotokos. Her seed was Christ. For a woman does not have seed; the seed belongs to the man. The man begets, and the woman gives birth. Abraham begot Isaac; Isaac begot Jacob—not Rebecca. Jacob begot Judah—not Rachel—and so forth. These are mysterious things. There God spoke of conception without seed; there God spoke of perpetual virginity.

Of whom was He speaking? Of a person who had not yet appeared on the scene, and who, when she did appear, entered the household of God so quietly and simply that no one could ever imagine that this little three-year-old girl, being led by two people—two elderly parents who seemed utterly unremarkable—was at that very moment being brought into the Temple as the Theotokos. They were bringing in the Most Holy Theotokos, the Lady of the Angels, she who is higher than the Cherubim and the Seraphim, higher than thrones, dominions, powers, and all the rest. This little girl! How could the human nous, the spiritual intellect, imagine it? How could the human nous comprehend it? But did the elderly Joachim

or the aged Anna themselves know what lay hidden behind this vow of theirs? For it was indeed a vow. The Most Holy Theotokos was vowed to God. Her mother—and obviously her father as well—had made this vow because they desired to be delivered from childlessness. Whatever child was born, male or female, they would give to the Temple. Those God-fearing people did not think as people do today. We want one child. God gives us one child as well. Perhaps He should not give you even one child. Why? Is God evil? God is good. That is why He does not give you a child. Would you be willing for Him to give you ten children? “No, just one.” Then He gives you none. You want one. You want it as an ornament. Get a little dog and play with it, then, if all you want is an ornament.

Would you be willing to keep as many children as God gives you? Then may God give them to you. That is why He chastens you and does not give you even the one. Joachim and Anna asked for a child so that their disgrace and the curse of childlessness might be taken away. They did not want a child for the reasons people unfortunately do today, and they intended to give the child back to God. They did not ask for someone to carry on their name, inherit their property, or close their eyes in death, as we falsely claim in order to justify our lack of faith or our unbelief. And God gave them the child. We read something beautiful and characteristic in the Protoevangelium. When Anna—the grandmother, as we might call her—gave birth, she asked the midwife, “What have I given birth to?” The midwife answered, “A girl.” And Anna said, “Blessed be the name of God.” Had it been a boy? Blessed be the name of God.

Could anyone have imagined, then, that such majesty lay hidden behind this vow? How could anyone have imagined it? Many times, when circumstances have us by the ankle and we are in need, we make vows. But when whatever has seized us by the ankle lets us go, we look for a spiritual father to release us from the vow, to release us from our promise. We have no desire to fulfill the vow! And if it was rather great or difficult because the situation itself was difficult, then see what trouble we get ourselves into. Joachim and Anna disregarded everything. They took the child and brought her to the Temple. And when a person gives God what he has vowed, God rewards him abundantly, both in this world and in the next. How could Anna have imagined that she would become the grandmother of God?

How could she have imagined such a thing? How could she have imagined the honor that this grandmother would receive? You know that on the Holy Mountain, which is the garden of the Most Holy Theotokos, only the grandmother has a church. No other female saint, no other woman, has a church there. Only the grandmother—only Saint Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos—has a church on the Holy Mountain. Great is the honor bestowed upon her. Later, she too devoted herself to ascesis, to ascetic discipline, and established a monastery for virgins at the place where her husband Joachim had prayed. I do not know whether you know where Joachim went to pray for a child. Do you know where he went? To the cave of the Prophet Elijah at Chozeba. He went into that cave, and afterward she established a community for virgins there.

For young women. She established a women’s monastery, and there, at Chozeba, Saint Anna died. She died in that monastery, and later her relics were transferred from there. Some of them are on the Holy Mountain, as I told you earlier. The person we are preparing to bury in these days, then, is the greatest person after God.

There are also people who were informed of their death before it came. The first person to be told beforehand of her death was the Most Holy Theotokos. Those of you who have been counted worthy to go to Jerusalem—or those who have not yet gone but will be counted worthy—and who visit the place called Little Galilee, will find the church there. I showed it to you the day before yesterday, if you remember and were following: the church at the place where the Most Holy Theotokos went every day to pray.

Christ prayed on the Mount of Olives; she prayed at the summit of the Mount of Olives. She prayed there, and there the Angel came and gave her the news: “In three days you are departing.” And she prepared for her death. It is a great thing for someone to be told beforehand of his death. It is a great honor from God. Such a person is counted worthy to know, so that he may attend to every final detail. Do you remember what God said to the prophet? “Set your house in order, for you shall die.” And yet a person should always be ready and should not wait for a message from God, for there is even a measure of egotism in that. Whatever God may do, a person must always be ready. The Church has surrounded this spiritual preparation with fasting and mourning. It is a mournful season, because

a real funeral is going to take place. If you are in Jerusalem and attend the services, August 15 becomes Great Friday. From the dependency of Gethsemane, an image of the Theotokos is carried in funeral procession down to Gethsemane, just as she was carried to burial by the Apostles at that time. It remains there for nine days, and afterward it is brought back again in solemn procession; then this image of the Most Holy Theotokos remains once more there in Gethsemane. Anyone who speaks about the Most Holy Theotokos will make mistakes. It is inevitable. Even an angel could not fully approach or comprehend her person. What above all reveals the greatness of the Theotokos is, on the one hand, the worth God gave her, the honor He bestowed upon her, and the place in which He set her

directly opposite Eve. For if one reads the events surrounding the conception and birth of the Theotokos and, on the other hand, the events surrounding Eve’s conception—not from the good, but from the evil one, Satan—and the birth of humanity’s destruction, one finds the same pattern of events. What chiefly magnifies the Theotokos and has placed her high above the apse as the Platytera, “She Who Is More Spacious than the Heavens,” is that she is the gate: she opened Paradise to us; she opened the way for us. Why did God give her this greater honor? So that she might receive those who are destined for Paradise. When Eve conceived from the evil one, she was a virgin. “Eve, being a virgin,” says Joseph Bryennios.

She conceived from the evil one and gave birth to death. Mary also, being a virgin, conceived from the Good One and gave birth to Life. The circumstances correspond exactly. Her great honor is that God made use of her as a mother, yet also left her a virgin. He is the One, it says, who did not violate her virginity in giving birth, and who came forth from the tomb just as He came forth from His mother. He left the tomb closed, locked, and sealed, just as the Jews in their malice had made it; yet they were put to shame, and He came forth just as He had come forth from His mother, without violating her virginity in giving birth. The greatest virtue today, which I might say

reaches into heaven, is virginity. The iconostasis is framed by virgins. The Lord is a virgin; the Most Holy Theotokos is a virgin; the Forerunner is a virgin; and others depicted here—John the Theologian, Saint Barbara, and so forth—are virgins. Virginity is the greatest virtue. In Holy Scripture—more precisely, in chapter 19 of Matthew, where Christ speaks about virginity—He presents three kinds of virgins in this world. He speaks of those who are virgins from their mother’s womb, those who remain virgins because they were made eunuchs by men, and those who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. “He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”

It is a daily struggle until the day a person dies, if he is to remain in the order of the Theotokos, the order of the Lord, and the order of the Forerunner. All of them shelter those who struggle. This is why Satan attacks the monastic order above all—the order that lives in virginity and preserves purity and chastity. No Christian figure in the world frightens him as much as a monk or a nun. I remember that Satan once appeared to a nun at the monastery of Saint Nektarios of Aegina and said, “It is you I want.” She replied, “You want me?

An old woman of seventy-eight?” “It is you I want.” “Why do you not go out into the world, where there are so many people?” “I already have them. It is you I want—you who burn me with your virginity and with your ‘Lord have mercy.’” These things, of course, mean nothing to most people. But they do mean something to the few, for few are being saved, and few have truly grasped what this matter is about. The Most Holy Theotokos is not merely a virgin in the physical sense. She is virgin in her eyes, virgin in taste, virgin in touch—virgin in every respect, says Saint Gregory the Theologian. She is virgin in all her senses, because many people today, unfortunately...

preserve physical virginity, while everything else in them has fallen. For precisely this reason, the Fathers—and especially Saint Isidore of Pelusium—put it beautifully: it is a great mockery for a person to be a virgin in the organs of procreation but not in the rest of the senses. Unfortunately, this happens to many men and women because they do not understand what the devil is or what sin is. If Satan cannot get you to cast away physical virginity, he will get you to cast away the virginity of your tongue, the virginity of your sight and hearing. He will corrupt you through these, leaving you with a barren virginity, like the remaining columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, while everything else lies deserted and in ruins.

He says specifically: “It is mockery to keep the organs of procreation virginal, but not to keep the tongue virginal; not the sight, not the hearing, nor the hands.” These too should have been kept virginal. Yet the heart is not kept virginal, but prostitutes itself to pride, anger, and the rest. Is such a person truly a virgin? Nothing is gained from that. If you read the passage by Saint Gregory concerning the Virgin, he says: The Virgin was virgin in every respect. All her senses were clean and pure, truly like rays of the sun.

When the Most Holy Theotokos sees someone struggling to attain perfection, she helps him. She is beside him and helps him. Indeed, many who struggle in some measure and have received a deeper spiritual assurance sense her beside them and seem to hear her voice telling them what to guard against. Because we do not know Satan’s schemes, we often fall through avenues we never expected. Satan is not concerned with making you fall deeply into sin. A little is enough—one small place, here on the tip of your finger, where you let him stand. You do not need to bring him into your bedroom. You do not need to bring him into the living room of your soul, or even into the hall. Just let him stand here, down at the edge, in one tiny corner.

That is all he wants, because once he manages to set foot on the edge of your soul, he has already taken possession of you. A person must have a correct understanding of sin in order to guard himself; otherwise, he will not be able to do so. Once he yields to sin and Satan manages to enter the territory of his soul by some other way, Satan has taken possession of him. The other day, while speaking, I mentioned an incident I had read about a queen and a king; you may have heard it. There was a king named Ninus and a queen named Semiramis, who for many years begged him to allow her to reign for one day.

He said to her, “But it is not permitted for a woman; it cannot be done.” “You do not love me,” she replied, and one thing after another: “I am only asking you for one day, so that I too may see what it is like,” and so on. After many years, she finally persuaded him to give in. So he issued a decree declaring that on the following day the queen would reign, and that every law, command, or decree she issued—whatever she did—was to be obeyed. And indeed, the next day Semiramis ascended the throne, took the great seal, sat down, and began issuing orders. Her first order was that King Ninus be arrested and executed immediately. And so her husband, King Ninus, was arrested and put to death at once. She asked for just one day—just one

time. You understand what that means. This is how the devil works. He is content if you give in only once, even in the smallest matter. Then he will have you in his grasp. Therefore, a person who wants to remain pure and who says, “Most Holy Theotokos, help me,” must admit absolutely nothing. He must be watchful and stand guard at every moment. John Chrysostom says, “Virginity is a beloved dwelling place of Christ.” A beloved dwelling place of Christ. Wherever there is pure virginity, joined with purity of all the other senses, that soul is a beloved dwelling place of Christ. Saint John Climacus teaches this as well.

I will tell you something bold, to show you just how serious the matter of virginity is. Do you know what Basil the Great said? “I have not known a woman, and yet I am not a virgin.” Do you understand what an admission that is? A person does not lose virginity only through the body. If he fails to guard his soul and his eyes, he is already corrupted. Then Saint Isaac the Syrian says something—and you women and we men should all pay close attention to it: “A virgin is not merely one who has kept his body undefiled from sexual relations, but one who feels modesty before himself even when he is alone.”

That is, he is ashamed to look upon himself naked, even when he is entirely alone. I remember—and let me make this brief digression—that I was once speaking in Athens. I do not remember the subject, but I mentioned this teaching. The young women and the others looked at one another as though it were strange. Is it really possible, they wondered, that when someone changes clothes alone, he should not look at his own body? I do not know exactly how it happened, but that evening I was occupied with something and did not notice the people leaving at the end. I came down from the platform, grabbed my bag, made my way through the crowd, and went downstairs. Two young women were walking ahead of me on the staircase, discussing this very subject. I was behind them, and one said, “Did you hear that?

Was that not ridiculous, telling us that you should not change your clothes or uncover your body?” “Oh, certainly, certainly,” the other replied. So from behind them I said, “You will not uncover your body if you turn off the light and change in the dark.” They were thunderstruck. Yet it is true. The Saints tell us, “Take care to close even this door if you wish to escape Satan, who is a master craftsman and can lead you where you never imagined you could go.” Even when you are entirely alone, Saint Isaac the Syrian says, you must be watchful about this too. John Chrysostom assigns the degrees, comparing virginity with Holy Matrimony, and says: “Virginity surpasses Holy Matrimony

as greatly as heaven surpasses earth and the angels surpass human beings.” That is how great the difference is between Holy Matrimony and virginity. Jerome also says, “Virginity is a sacrifice offered to Christ, bearing an angelic likeness.” So it is not something insignificant. We chant and sing, “The beauty of your virginity,” while someone else tells you, “Virginity is nothing.” If virginity is nothing, why did Christ give a woman a virginal membrane? Why did Christ give virginity to a man? Why did He not give it to animals and beasts? We will be called to account in every respect. Therefore, if in some measure we desire

to receive this blessing of the Most Holy Theotokos and to carry something of her fragrance ourselves, let us guard against everything that could deliver us into Satan’s hands. From one small concession, a person can fall into sin and lose both this passing life and eternity. The Most Holy Theotokos devotes all her care to those who desire to struggle, and all who continue that struggle to this day will have experienced her power. For Satan roars like a roaring lion, seeking to bring everyone into his grasp, so that he may stand before God and say, as he did in the days of Job, “I have come after going around the earth and walking through it.” They are all mine, he says; I trample upon them, and I rule them. Let us not grant him this boast. Instead, let us implore the Most Holy Theotokos to help us.

«Πήγαινε να βοηθήσεις εκεί πέρα, κουράζεται και αυτή». Όμως ο Χριστός μας δεν την δικαίωσε, δεν την κεραυνοβόλησε. Δεν την δικαίωσε· με έναν πλάγιον πάντοτε τρόπο, διαφωτιστικόν, όπως κάνει πάντοτε προς όλες τις κατευθύνσεις και προς όλες τις αντιδράσεις. Αυτό είναι μεγάλο μάθημα και σε εμάς, πώς πρέπει να παρουσιάζουμε τις αλήθειες και τη γνώμη μας. Όχι ως διδάσκαλοι, αλλά ως διαφωτισταί, ει δυνατόν. Της είπε με τον πλάγιο αυτόν, τον ωραίον, μειλίχιον τρόπον: «Μάρθα, Μάρθα, μεριμνάς και τυρβάζεις περί πολλά. Ενός δε εστι χρεία. Ενός δε εστι χρεία». Τι είναι, ποια είναι η χρεία αυτή, ποια είναι η ανάγκη αυτή τώρα;

Μπορούσε κανείς να φανταστεί λοιπόν πίσω από αυτό το τάμα ότι εκρύπτεται αυτό το μεγαλείο; Πού να φανταστεί ο άνθρωπος; Εμείς πολλές φορές τάζουμε στις ανάγκες μας, όταν μας έχουν πιάσει από το ποδάρι τα περιστατικά, τάζουμε, και όταν μας αφήσει αυτός που μας έχει πιάσει από το ποδάρι, τότε φροντίζουμε να βρούμε πνευματικό να μας λύσει από το τάμα, να μας λύσει από την υπόσχεση. Πού να θέλουμε να το κάνουμε το τάμα! Και αν ήταν λίγο μεγάλο, λίγο ζόρικο, λόγω ότι ήταν ζόρικη η περίπτωση, τότε κοίτα μπλέκουμε. Αυτοί αδιαφόρησαν για τα πάντα. Το πήραν και το πήγαν. Και όταν ο άνθρωπος το δώσει, το τάμα του Θεού, ο Θεός τον αμείβει πλουσιοπαρόχως και σε αυτόν τον κόσμο και στον άλλον. Πού να φανταστεί ότι θα γινότανε γιαγιά η Άννα του Θεού;
