Summary
The lecture presents Christ’s Resurrection as the central joy of Orthodox faith and the Holy Light of the Holy Sepulchre as a continuing sign associated with Pascha. Christ’s initiative illustrates that God seeks fallen humanity through suffering, need, and providential events, while calling people beyond a merely transactional relationship with Him. The empty tomb, burial cloths, angelic testimony, guarded grave, and later appearances are offered as evidence that Jesus truly died, was buried, conquered death, and rose bodily.

Thank you.
We find ourselves in this season, in this place and at this time, when the Resurrection of our Christ is being discussed. For us Orthodox Christians, it is the most joyful event, because only the Orthodox rightly believe in Christ, who was buried and rose again. And everyone comes running to us to receive this light, the light of the Resurrection, even though some who receive the light of the Resurrection from us still do not wish to speak about Him who rose.
Read the views of various people who belong to other religious confessions, even though they are called Christian, and you will see how they stumble. In a certain way, our Christ has enriched us Orthodox with special grace and shows us particular favor, especially on the day of the Resurrection. You know that He gives the light of the Resurrection only to the Orthodox. Some of the heterodox receive the light from us Orthodox—with the exception, of course, of the Catholics. Although they are present and witness it in those years when their Pascha coincides with ours,
they ought by now to have bowed the knee, yet they still refuse to do so. This year once again the light was given by our Christ to an Orthodox Christian, and indeed at an unexpected hour: as soon as Petros, the representative of the Patriarch, entered, as I was informed, Christ gave the light. You know that the light is given at midday on Saturday, before the night of the Resurrection. When people go to the Resurrection service, they carry the light already burning, taken from that life-giving Tomb, and then they simply celebrate the service of the Resurrection. There is also much discussion about whether our Christ rose. Yes, He rose. Did He appear to certain people? Yes, He appeared to certain people.
To everyone? No, not to everyone, because there was no reason for it. When there is no reason, our Christ does not act. But wherever there is a reason, He always wishes to help, and He does help. Wherever people of good will are found—whether there is one, five, twelve, a thousand, or five thousand—we see that He appears. As we have said, there are many authoritative testimonies concerning the risen Christ. Holy Scripture contains thirteen testimonies, and even sets out in chronological order where and how Christ appeared. On the day of the Resurrection alone, our Christ appeared
five times according to Scripture and six times according to Tradition. Scripture says that Mary Magdalene was the first to see Him risen. Afterward, the other women, the Myrrh-bearing Women, saw Him when they went on Sunday morning to anoint Him with spices. Then Simon saw Him: “He appeared to Simon.” He made a special appearance to Peter to strengthen him, lest he take his own life or be swallowed up by bitterness because of his fall and his lapse. He appeared especially to him, although He had already given instructions, as Mark writes.
Through his threefold denial, Peter had placed himself outside the company of the Apostles. Yet Christ appeared especially to him, to strengthen him and reach him in time. The fourth appearance is presented as that of our Christ walking toward Emmaus with Cleopas and, apparently, Luke as well. In the fifth appearance of that same day, our Christ returned after revealing Himself to those from Emmaus. Though the doors were shut, He stood in their midst, blessed them, and twice said, “Peace be with you.” He also instituted the Mystery of repentance and confession, giving them a special grace of the Holy Spirit, a first Pentecost.
The Mystery of repentance and confession was given as this first gift of grace. These, in order, are the five scriptural appearances of our Christ on the first day of the Resurrection. Yet there is also a sixth appearance, which was actually the first. Our Church, preserving what Tradition has handed down, says in a troparion that the Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother, was the first to receive the news of the Resurrection from the Angel: “The Angel cried to her who is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin; again I say, rejoice. Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day.” This says nothing other than what I am telling you. Yet the Evangelists do not mention it. The news of the Resurrection comes from
a little farther away, so that it may be believed. As the saying goes, a person is not honored as holy in his own country. Therefore, if the news had come from the Theotokos—“My Son has risen”—it would not have been accepted. When the news began to circulate, people would have asked, “Who said so?” And the answer would have been, “His mother.” Well, of course His mother sees Him as risen! But did any of you, did anyone else see Him? This is precisely why it is not mentioned. Nevertheless, through this troparion alone, the Church recounts what took place. There is also another tradition, not widely circulated, which says that the Archangel truly informed our Most Holy Theotokos, and that the first person who saw
the risen Christ was the Theotokos, followed by Mary Magdalene, then the other Myrrh-bearing Women, and afterward the other persons I have mentioned to you. Besides these six appearances, there were other appearances of our Christ. Eight days later, as you know, He appeared to Thomas and used the same words, so as to convince him that He was the One who had risen and that he should not be unbelieving, but believing, as I told you. He also appeared, as we read in the twentieth chapter of John, to ten Apostles. This was the fifth appearance, when Thomas and Judas were absent. Then He appeared to the eleven Apostles—that is, those of whom I am speaking—with Thomas
now included, though Judas was still absent. Then He appeared to the seven who had gone fishing at Tiberias, as John records in chapter 21, verses 1 through 14. Afterward, He appeared again to the eleven in Galilee, as Matthew records in chapter 28, verses 16 through 20. Then He appeared to five hundred brethren, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:6. After that, He appeared especially to James alone—the Bishop of Jerusalem and Brother of the Lord—as mentioned in Acts 1:3–8 and 1 Corinthians 15:7. Then He appeared to all the disciples, as Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15:7. He appeared at the Ascension; they saw Him again when He was taken up at Little Galilee. Luke records this in Luke 24:50 and in the Acts of the Apostles. Finally, He appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus. Paul himself mentions it in 1 Corinthians 15:8: “as to one untimely born.” “Last of all,” Paul writes, “He appeared also to me, as to one untimely born.” I have listed for you thirteen scriptural appearances of our Christ, and one appearance to our Most Holy Theotokos, making fourteen. From that point, the testimony gradually began to spread. The historians of the first centuries wrote about it. Josephus, for example, wrote many things about our Christ after the Resurrection, while other historians described the person of Jesus—what He looked like, and so forth.
Perhaps God will grant me the grace to make a separate recording about this. When it is ready, I will tell you to obtain it, so that you may learn further details recorded in other sources—details that people do not ordinarily have the opportunity to discover because they lack the necessary books. Tonight, beyond all these matters, I wanted to dwell on one of these appearances, one that has both moral and doctrinal significance: specifically, the fifth appearance in order, on the road to Emmaus.
Two Evangelists speak of and present Christ walking toward Emmaus, from Jerusalem to Emmaus, on the day of the Resurrection. Mark speaks of it briefly, in only a few words. Luke, however, gives an extensive account of the conversations and of Christ’s entire manner toward the two men traveling to Emmaus—Cleopas and, apparently, Luke himself, according to a troparion of our Church. I shall take my subject from the Apostle and Evangelist Luke, who records it in the twenty-fourth chapter of his Gospel, beginning at verse 13.
First of all, I want you to know that there were three towns in that region bearing the name Emmaus. One of them is the town mentioned here; another was renamed. One was called Nicopolis, while the other had existed much earlier. Today they are no longer known by those names. When we speak of Emmaus today, we mean the place to which our Christ went that day with the two disciples, about seven kilometers outside Jerusalem, roughly sixty stadia away. “And behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem.” Two of them. Who were they? The Apostles. And the Apostles were not only the Twelve; there were
also the Seventy. Nor was the circle limited even to the Seventy, for there were others among His close followers. Two of those who belonged to the circle around Jesus were traveling toward Emmaus that day. These two “talked with each other”—they were discussing among themselves—“about all these things that had happened,” about what had taken place during those days. Those events had moved, troubled, and shaken every person in Jerusalem. The indifferent, the enemies, and the friends alike were all discussing them. Some found the events strange; others thought things had to happen that way; still others held different views, and so forth. He was not an...
ordinary person. He was an extraordinary figure who affected everyone, some negatively and others positively. So, it says, they were talking with one another “about all these things that had happened.” The text does not list them, because what had happened was well known. “And it came to pass, while they were talking”—as they walked along, discussing these things—“that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.” And there was Christ! As the two men walked and talked, He came alongside them, as it were.
“But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not recognize Him.” Why were their eyes restrained? Because He was known to them. Therefore, these two men must have belonged to His close circle. For if He had been a stranger to them, what reason would there have been to restrain their eyes?
Their eyes were restrained precisely so that they would not recognize Him. “And He said to them”—Christ now begins the conversation—“What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you walk, and why are you downcast?” What are you discussing? What is troubling you, gripping you, tormenting you, so that you look so gloomy?
So dejected?
I do not know whether you have paid attention to your own life or to the lives of other people. Sadly, very often a person never begins a conversation with God. It is God who always goes in search of man, and through various circumstances He seeks to speak with him. If a person understands this, stops, and speaks with God, everything will change for him. He will learn things; close to God, he will experience things—deep emotion, joy, fear, correction—and his life will be changed. Look, if you wish, at every case in which someone has been caught, whether
Whether it was a sardine or a dogfish, a small catch or a great one—for that is what I mean by those two descriptions—Christ always took the first step. Here, Christ begins the conversation. At Jacob’s well, with a woman who had had six men—five husbands, while the sixth was not her husband—He begins the conversation. Paul was like a wild beast, and Christ caught him outside Damascus. Look wherever you will. But why look so far away? Examine yourselves. Those of you who are religious: did you go to Christ, or did Christ come to you through some event? It was Christ. We deceive ourselves in the fullest sense of the word. Man does not want Christ, nor the Gospel of Christ, because it reproves his lawless way of life.
If man does want Christ, he wants a Christ who will remove all the “do nots” and “thou shalt nots”—one who permits fornication, permits adultery, permits theft, permits the killing of children, permits this and permits that. That is the God man wants; that is the Gospel man wants. And because Christ has no such Gospel, nor will He ever fashion one, man does not want Christ. That is the final conclusion. Yet various circumstances—pain, need, failure, bereavement, adversity in life, and so forth—compel us to approach Christ as though making a bargain. We make vows to Him: we will bring Him oil if He heals us; we will bring Him a candle if He... We deal with God transactionally, instead of giving ourselves to Him.
We do not give ourselves to Him because He is our Savior, our benefactor, our Maker, our Creator, and our Judge. One day He will judge us, whether we want it or not. Is that not so? If each person honestly examines this and searches himself, he will discover that Christ took the initiative in making His presence known. That is precisely what He did here. He began the conversation: “And He said to them, ‘What are these words?’” Then one of them found the courage to answer Him, and indeed in a stern, human tone, as we unfortunately do so often. “Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered.”
The hymnographer of our Church believes that the other disciple was Luke himself, who records the event. “He said to Him,” as though saying: “Are You the only stranger dwelling in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” Cleopas cannot understand why this man is not also gloomy, downcast, and distressed. He finds it inexcusable. This stranger ought to have known what had happened in Jerusalem and taken the matter with due seriousness. He reproaches Him: “From Your manner of speech and Your clothing, what do You appear to be?”
“You are a Jerusalemite; You are not from far away. You are staying in Jerusalem, and You do not know what happened? Everyone knows about it. It ought to concern You too; You ought to know.” Christ replies as though genuinely asking: “And He said to them, ‘What things?’” What happened? What happened? Were You not there? Of course I know. Was I not there when Your hands were pierced, Your side was pierced—and the wound has still not healed—Your feet were pierced, when they spat upon You and cried, “Prophesy! Who struck You?” Yet He speaks as though none of it had happened: “I know nothing. I remember nothing.” Someone once said a single word to us, and two hundred years later we are still talking about it. We have even said, “The person who once dared to say that to me must not come even to my grave.” And You have forgotten? These things happened only yesterday—what are You saying? This is exactly what I want to teach you. This is what I want to teach you. I am not removed from what happened,
nor from the slaps and blows, nor from all those humiliations. They happened yesterday; they happened today—yet I do not remember them. Blessed is the person who has ever asked Christ for the grace to forget the malice of the world. We not only refuse to forget it; we cultivate it. And we expect the other person to sit and listen to all the accusations we have to bring against him. We pray in such a way that we show we do not want to see the face of God: “I hope I become terribly short of breath, so that He will take me and I can finally rest.” Really? He will take you so that you can rest? Do you think He has everything prepared for you there? With such a mind, such a heart, and such hardness, will He take you to rest? You simply do not know. Fortunately, God often does not listen. He acts as though He were deaf, as though He had turned away and did not hear. If He listened to the things we wish for when we are irritated, angry, and malicious, Hell would already be full. Hell would already be full.
These words, then, are deeply edifying for many of us. Take care, O man, to forget. Do not forget your benefactors, but forget your enemies. And understand that those who are called your enemies are not truly your enemies. Forget the wrong they have done, and pray for them. For if they were absent, you would not become a Saint. Consider this: difficult people will help you become holy. They will help you see whether you truly have a relationship with Christ. If no one troubles you, how will it become evident whether you have endurance, patient endurance, and forbearance? Unfortunately, we often hear people say, “Go on, trouble me.” They say, “I want to become holy.” But then they complain that others will not let them. Yet those very people who seem not to let you become holy will sanctify you, if you are willing. It is difficult people who reveal who the good people are. Without the bad, the good are not made manifest.
Thus, on that very day, Christ leaves us a great lesson, boundless in meaning; and blessed is the person who wants to study and follow this path. Peter writes that Christ was “leaving us an example, that we should follow in His steps.” He left us a path, he says. His life was a path showing people what they must heed and follow, if they wish one day to arrive where He has gone, for He has “become the forerunner for us.” “Are You the only stranger dwelling in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” Do you know how many such people there are in the world today—people who know nothing about what happened during these holy days? They know what is happening in Afghanistan,
what Brezhnev says in his messages over there, what Carter says from his side, and what Khomeini says from the other. Yet a man does not know what is happening within him, only twenty-two centimeters from his heart, in relation to Christ, His Crucifixion, His burial, and His Resurrection. That he does not know. Has this person been brought to the faith or not? What those who observed Christ said then is still true today. There are people who did not even bring candles into their homes, nor did they even turn on the radio to hear about Christ, as you have. Such people exist today, here in the full light of the twentieth century. And if you read the figures showing how many have believed in Christ, you will be horrified. Today you have knowledge available to you and the freedom to read whatever you wish, from the most unbelieving account to the most believing. But man does not want to. For the reason I told you earlier, he does not want to.
Christ confronts his lawless life, his lawless deeds, and his ego; therefore he does not want Christ. Yet the events of the Resurrection stand out in vivid relief even in our own days. “And they said to Him, ‘The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth.’” That is what we are discussing. These are the things we want to concern You as well. Very well, then—who was this Jesus of Nazareth? “He was a man, a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; and how our chief priests and rulers delivered Him up to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.” Do You not know these things? Where were You? “But we”—the two of us—“had hoped that He was the One who was going to redeem Israel.”
Besides all this, something else troubles us. “Indeed, besides all these things, today is the third day since they happened. Moreover, certain women of our company astonished us. They went to the tomb early in the morning.” Some women from among us went to the tomb at daybreak and startled us. And what did they tell you? “When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive.” After all these things, is it possible for us to be cheerful, not to be downcast, and not to be troubled? They related to Christ all that had unfolded like a drama—all that weighed upon them—and they justified their distress,
their sorrow and dejection. “And then there were the women,” they say. On the one hand, they crucified Him and took Him from us. On the other hand, something else strange happened today: another report says that they did not find Him. “When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive.” All this has left us confused. And then they continue: “Some of those who were with us went to the tomb.” Some of our own people set out. These were the other disciples, who went in separate groups at different times. That is why some found two angels, others found one angel, some went at the deepest dawn,
others went late on the Sabbath, and so forth. They went at different hours, and each tells in his own way of the same event, but at a different hour and moment. That is why their accounts differ, and people say, “One writes one thing, and another writes something else.” But they did not confer beforehand about what they would write; they did not conspire together. When it was all over, each one wrote his own account. These differences make the truth easier to recognize. Each relates what he saw and heard concerning the same event, though at a different time. All these details, when gathered together, bear truthful witness to that one event. “Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said”—that is, they found the tomb empty, and so forth—“but Him they did not see.” This is the information they had.
The tomb was found empty, angels spoke, and so forth. We know what the angels said when they met the Myrrh-bearing Women: “We know whom you seek—Jesus of Nazareth. He is not here. See the place where they laid the Lord.” They had placed Him here, but Christ is no longer inside. At this point I would like to say something that I believe we have mentioned before: this gives us some consolation. We possess one unique weapon—the empty tomb of the Crucified One, Jesus of Nazareth. He alone is the head of a faith whose tomb is empty.
This is in contrast to all the other so-called founders of religions, whose tombs are full. Go to Mecca, and you will find Muhammad still bound in his burial shroud, inside the tomb. Go farther on to find Buddha, and you will find him there as well. Go to any other leader, to any pope; go to Luther; go wherever you wish. Wherever people are crowned and claim to be heads of religions, you will find all those leaders held fast in their tombs. Only Jesus, the Crucified One of Nazareth, conquered death. Behold, His tomb is empty. It bears witness, silences every mouth, and cries aloud. For Christ told us, “If these should keep silent, the stones would cry out.” This is what has happened. The empty tomb proclaims the truth.
The stones speak. Indeed, the stones speak, just as the linen cloths spoke, just as the face cloth spoke, and just as the myrrh and aloes spoke, bearing witness that Christ is not there, but has risen. From that time onward, these stones have shown the tomb to be empty. But who will pay attention? From the first day, the Jews paid the soldiers to say, “While we were sleeping, He was stolen away.” So that is what happened—He was stolen? “And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will intervene”—why should you worry?—“and keep you soldiers out of trouble. You just tell that story.” And the money began to flow from that very day. Money was paid to betray Him, and money was also paid to cover up the truth about Him.
They wanted to prevent people from saying that Christ had risen. And do you know how many arguments still circulate about this subject today? What inventions have they not devised concerning our Christ? Some come forward with great concern and ask, “Where was Christ from the age of twelve to thirty? He went to India to learn secret arts and become a fakir. Then He returned here to play the part of a fakir.” That is what they want to establish; that is their purpose. They are not interested in learning, as a matter of general knowledge, where Christ studied, or whether the poor child had a harder youth than today’s pampered children. That is not the point. Their purpose is to claim that Christ went to India and learned an art by which He supposedly rose. And fakirs, they say, do not remain below for only the thirty-three hours that our Christ remained in Hades; they remain for fifty, sixty, or eighty hours.
So they would make the fakirs greater than Jesus. What new thing, then, did Christ do for us? Very well—but take a fakir and put him on a cross. Nail him there for several hours. Then take a spear and thrust it into his side, so that all the blood and water pour out. Bury him, and let us see whether he rises. Fakirs are buried alive and come back out alive. Christ was dead. “Bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” And yet they claim that Christ did not die. Others say He suffered only an apparent death. But then why did the very Jews who crucified Him go to Pilate and say, according to their own testimony, “We remember that that deceiver said, while He was still alive...” He is not alive now; now He has died. If even they say that He died, then who are you, appearing two thousand years later when you were not there, to dare to claim that Christ did not die or that Christ was not buried?
Do you not grasp these things? Do you not see them? “Command,” they said, “that the tomb be sealed,” because that deceiver had said that He would rise on the third day. Therefore He was buried—He truly was buried. They asked for the tomb to be sealed, “and they made it secure with the guard.” Five hundred soldiers went there, in addition to the Jewish guard. Tradition says that five hundred went, and all of them remained there. They guarded the stones, the keys, the imperial seals, and every mark of authority.
Christ did not rise in the way the Catholics say, or as they depict it in their pictures: that an angel came, lifted the stone, and Christ came out. What does our Church sing? “O Christ, preserving the seals intact, You arose from the tomb; just as You did not violate the keys of the Virgin in Your birth.” Just as He came forth from His Most Holy Mother without harming her virginity, so also, “You came forth while the sepulcher remained sealed; You came forth, O Christ, while the tomb was sealed.” Then why was it opened, so that we could see it empty? This was done for the sake of the Myrrh-bearing Women. They were wondering, “Who will roll away the stone for us?” Why are you concerned? An angel goes and uncovers the tomb—not so that Christ may come out, for He had already come forth during the night,
so that they could see that Christ had come out. Not so that He could come out, but so that they could see that He had already come out. All these conclusions, then, follow from their own words and from the course of events. For us, this is the great fact: Christ’s tomb is empty. And this brings us some consolation. In the same way, our own tombs will be emptied one day, whether we want it or not. Let us take care, then, because at the Resurrection each of us will be judged in this body, which will be formed anew from our bones. Each one of us will be judged. Let there be a dove within it, and not a raven; for sadly, whatever we give the grave to keep is what will be found within our body after the Resurrection. If we give it faith, metanoia—repentance—Confession,
goodness, integrity, chastity, and the like, we shall have a blessed outcome. But if we give it blasphemy, refusal to repent, separation from Holy Communion, and indifference, that too will rise up to be judged and condemned, and it will have a raven within it. That is the point. When we returned at night from the Resurrection service—forgive me, from the procession with the Epitaphios—the prophecy was read that tells us how we shall be made human beings again. Take the page and tear it out so that we do not have to read it! Yet the Church stubbornly continues to read it to this day. Those of you who did not pay attention should open the Holy Week service book that you held absentmindedly in your hands. Turn to the place where the Epitaphios returns, and the prophecy of Ezekiel is read, beginning with chapter 37, verse 1.
Do you not have the service book? Read it in the Old Testament: Ezekiel 37, from verse 1 onward. It tells us how we shall be made human beings again and how we shall rise. And the Church places it at precisely the proper moment. He whom you buried this evening is going down below for your sake, so that one day He may raise you, and He tells you this to console you. In the same way, He consoled us with the promise that He would come, from the time when there were only two human beings, together with the devil in Eden. He said, “I will put enmity between you and her seed,” consoling us even then that He would one day send the One who would crush the serpent’s head—which He did on Golgotha. So now, here too, He tells us that He will open the graves, whether we want it or not, whether we believe it or not. What comes out of the grave depends on us, as I said earlier. In any case, they told Him,
“This is how things appear to us. These are the things that weigh upon us; this is what we have endured. We thought He was someone great, but they crucified Him. Yet amid this one event that filled us with bitterness, a strange report has come from some of our own women, who went there together: the tomb is empty. That is where matters stand. How are we to reconcile it all? For now, however, we are packing up and going home.” It appears that although they lived in Emmaus, they belonged to Christ’s close circle. But after everything that had happened—after He had been crucified—they lost all hope, gathered their belongings, and set out to return home, back to their former life, as we were saying. Now our Christ responds and says: “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!”
If you had paid attention to what the Prophets wrote in Holy Scripture, you would have understood the things you saw today. Everything that took place had been foretold. The sacred writers wrote beforehand that these things would happen. How plainly they had spoken! Was this not also what Joseph the Betrothed was told?
“Send Mary away secretly,” he said, and so forth. “No,” the angel tells him. “This is written in Isaiah: a virgin shall give birth. She is that virgin. Take courage and keep her with you.” And he drew back and humbled himself. If only we paid attention! Everything is written, whether by our Fathers, in the Gospel, or in the Old Testament. Everything that concerns us, including the things we imagine to be entirely new questions, has already been spoken of. And this is where Christ begins with them. And “He interpreted…”
“in all the Scriptures.” “You are foolish,” He says, “and slow of heart.” Your understanding does not turn toward “believing all that the prophets have spoken. Was it not necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into His glory?” Did all these things not have to happen first, He asks, and then His glory—His Resurrection—be revealed? “And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” He still has not revealed who He is. He does not say, for example, “What do you make of this passage? Does David not say this? Does Isaiah not say that?” He goes on from passage to passage. They listened in amazement, and they listened gladly. Meanwhile, as they spoke and discussed these things, they came…
to the crossroads. Even today, if you travel toward Tabor, Kiti, and the surrounding area, you will find it. What is it like? It is on the right. There is a crossroads where you must turn, with an arrow pointing toward Emmaus. They reached that crossroads while still absorbed in their conversation. All this was taking place in the late afternoon. By the time they arrived, evening was approaching, because the journey takes about two hours on foot.
Christ makes as though He is going farther. “Good night, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye.” He continues along the road. He is merely a traveler, as far as they know. But their conversation had so warmed and consoled them that they thought it good to ask Him to stay with them that night. “They drew near,” the Gospel says, “to the village to which they were going, and He made as though He would go farther.” It was as though He were saying, “I still have a journey ahead of Me; I must continue.”
“But they constrained Him, saying, ‘Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.’” Night is falling; where will You go now? They see Him simply as a man. The same thing often happens to us: we meet a fellow traveler who warms our heart, and we feel close to him. “Stay with us tonight. Please sit with us; we will enjoy one another’s company. Get up in the morning after you have rested, and your journey will be easier.” We say such things. Something like this—perhaps exactly this—happened here. In this instance Christ accepted their humble invitation: “And He went in to stay with them.” I often hear people tell me, “I feel spiritually dry. I pray, but I feel dry. I attend the Church, but I feel dry. I receive Holy Communion, but I feel dry. I feel nothing.”
“It is not like the early days, when I first returned to Christ and could feel His grace,” and so on. But do you say what those disciples said to Christ? “My Christ, come with me. My Christ, come to my work. My Christ, come to my table. My Christ, come to my bedside. My Christ, come into my life.” Do you plead with Christ, “Stay with us”? The Gospel says that they constrained Him. Christ allows Himself to be overcome. This may sound strange to you: can a human being overcome God? And yet He allows Himself to be overcome. A human being does not overcome God’s almighty power; he overcomes God’s love. Have you ever seen a little grandchild wrestling with his grandfather, and the child pins the grandfather to the ground,
then stands over him proudly, like a rooster, delighted to have beaten his grandfather? Was it the grandchild’s strength that threw the grandfather down? No; it was the grandfather’s love for his grandchild. This is how Christ allows Himself to be overcome. What grace, in this sense, have we ever asked of Christ that He has not manifested in our life? “There is nothing there; these people are unbelievers.” Very well, I agree with you. I cannot tell you how many millions of times you may insist that there is nothing. But what if there is even one chance? What will you do then? For the sake of that one chance, ask. Humble yourself enough to inquire and say, “If You are alive, come out and show me. If You are there above, I want to know You. If You exist, reveal Yourself to me, and come so that we may speak.” However hostile you may be toward Him, simply tell Him whatever you wish: “I would like to know whether He exists, because all these things people relate about the glory of God and His existence…”
“may be true, but I cannot grasp them; my understanding is distorted. Yet can You do something for me?” Try this seemingly foolish experiment, and then you will see. Try it, and then you will see. People who intended to mock the faith have been changed. Read The Spiritual Theatre by Saint Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain. There you will find a story about a theatrical performance in which the Mystery of Baptism was mocked. The actor playing the person being baptized entered the font to ridicule the Mystery before the audience. But once he was immersed, he was overwhelmed. He came out, made the sign of the Cross, and said, “I too believe in Jesus, the Crucified Nazarene, the One whom…”
“I entered this font to mock.” Of course, they said that he had gone mad. But that was a blessed madness. If only I had possessed such madness throughout all my years! For to the world, Christianity is madness. Christianity is madness. There was a poor man who filed his tax return and declared that he had given monasteries, churches, and other charitable causes an amount equal to all his earnings. He was summoned to the tax office to account for it. How could a poor man give away so much money? Yet there it was: he had given it. “Only madmen do such things.”
The tax officer called him mad, because everyone else accumulates wealth. “Why do you give yours away, especially when you are poor?” Such things seem strange. Everyone gathers; no one gives. Here, however, the result was this: they reached the house and naturally began to care for their guest. And what happened there? “Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.” Notice His conduct here. The stranger pronounced the blessing in their home; He prayed in their home. Yet at our own tables, we do not pray ourselves; and if a guest is present, we are even less likely to pray.
We do not have the courage to pray because the guest may be an atheist or an unbeliever. We gather around the table, and although someone ought to offer the prayer, the guest does not pray in the house and does not even know what to say. He knows only how to eat; he does not know how to thank the One who provides the food, nor do the hosts know how to do so. Here, then, Christ is shown blessing the bread.
“And when they received the bread, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.” Their eyes were opened when they received the blessed bread from His hands. “This is Christ!” Receive Christ in Holy Communion; partake of the bread of Jesus, and you will see how your eyes will be opened.
The things you mock, and the things you marvel at in others, will appear entirely different to you. How can a human being speak of Christ without Christ? Holy Scripture says, “No one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.” Only through the grace of the Holy Spirit will you confess Christ as Lord. And what else does it say? “In Your light we shall see light.” How, then, do you expect to see the light without light? Turn off the light—where is the light now? Show me!
So He blessed the bread, their eyes were opened, and then they knew that it was He who had been speaking with them. How could they possibly rest now? They left everything as it was and hurried back to Jerusalem—another two or three hours from Emmaus. They returned at once. “So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the Eleven and those who were with them gathered together.” The disciples were in the upper room for fear of the Jews, so that they might face the danger together. The two began to recount and explain the things that had happened on the road. Forgive me—the others were saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.” Besides the reports from the women and the other disciples, they now had one further report: Christ had appeared privately to Peter. They were discussing this there that very evening, saying that He truly had been seen.
Now the two arrive and explain what happened on the road and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread. “Wait, let us tell you what happened to us—how He revealed Himself to us, and how we saw Him when He blessed the bread and gave it to us, and our eyes were opened.” “Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them.” Though the doors were shut, He stood in their midst and said, “Peace to you.” There He is! They came running, and He came through the closed doors. “But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.” They thought He was a ghost. “And He said to them, ‘Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.’” And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” Do you have anything to eat? And they gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. He took it and ate before them, and said, “These are the things I told you about when I was still with you.” And now everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms is being fulfilled. Then He opened their nous—their spiritual understanding—to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and for metanoia—repentance—for the forgiveness of sins to be preached in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.”
These are the events of the fifth appearance of our Christ to His own disciples. As you have seen, they contain both dogmatic and moral teachings. Let each of us retain what he can, according to the measure of his strength, purity, receptiveness, and the grace of the Holy Spirit. My only prayer is that Christ may count us worthy to journey with Him into the Kingdom of Heaven.

«Οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν ἐκρατοῦντο τοῦ μὴ ἐπιγνῶναι αὐτόν». Γιατί εκρατούντο οι οφθαλμοί των; Διότι τους ήταν γνωστός. Άρα ήσαν από το στενό περιβάλλον οι άνθρωποι οι δύο αυτοί. Διότι, αν ήταν ένας ξένος προς αυτούς, ποιος ο λόγος να κρατούνται οι οφθαλμοί των;
Να κρατούνται οι οφθαλμοί των, παρά μη τυχόν τον γνωρίσουν. «Εἶπε δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς», παίρνει τον λόγο ο Χριστός, «Τίνες οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι οὓς ἀντιβάλλετε πρὸς ἀλλήλους περιπατοῦντες, καὶ ἐστὲ σκυθρωποί;» Τι συζητείτε; Τι είναι αυτό που σας απασχολεί, που σας συνέχει, που σας βασανίζει, τέλος, και είστε κατσούφηδες;
Ο υμνωδός της Εκκλησίας μας θέλει να πιστεύει ότι ο άλλος είναι ο ίδιος ο Λουκάς, ο οποίος γράφει το περιστατικό. «Εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν», σαν να του λέγει: «Καλά, σὺ μόνος παροικεῖς ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνως τὰ γενόμενα ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις;» Δεν του δικαιολογεί να μην είναι κι αυτός σκυθρωπός, να μην είναι κι αυτός κατηφής, να μην είναι στενοχωρημένος. Δεν το δικαιολογεί. Έπρεπε να γνωρίζει τα γεγονότα της Ιερουσαλήμ και να έχει πάρει την ανάλογο σοβαρά θέση. Τον κατηγορεί. Πώς φαίνεσαι εσύ και από τη διάλεκτον και από την ενδυμασία;
Αν προσέχατε αυτά που είναι γραμμένα στη Γραφή από τους Προφήτες, θα τα δικαιολογούσατε αυτά που είδατε σήμερα. Όλα αυτά τα οποία έλαβαν χώρα είχαν προγραφεί. Τα έγραψαν οι ιστορικοί ότι θα γινόσαντε και τα έγραψαν. Λοιπόν, πόσο τίμια θα είχαν πει. Αυτό δεν είχε πει και τότε και ο Ιωσήφ ο Μνήστωρ;
