Summary

Holy Friday is presented as the summit of Holy Week, and the speaker reproaches the faithful for treating it with indifference while attending funerals of their own relatives with far greater seriousness. Prophecies and Old Testament types are shown fulfilled in detail: gall for his thirst, lots cast for the seamless robe, being numbered with transgressors and buried with the rich, the noonday darkness foretold by Amos and attested by non-Christian historians, Joseph the All-Comely sold for silver, and the Passover lamb whose bones were not broken. The three crosses carry moral and doctrinal lessons: the Thief's plea was spoken before Christ said 'It is finished' and belongs to the old covenant, so salvation now comes through the Church and her mysteries even when the clergy are unworthy, while Job's restored children, the preaching in Hades, and the perennial doubt of the Resurrection at Athens and by Thomas confirm that souls live and Christ is risen.

…the greatest day of this whole season. Holy Friday is the summit of all this preparation. If anyone wants to engage with the events of Holy Friday, he will have to find himself, on the one hand, guilty, and on the other hand, in debt to the One who did all this for us back then. As you yourselves unfortunately know, and as you can see for yourselves, we do not take these events as seriously as we should

and by staying away we show that we are indifferent to them.

Whether we want it or not, one day we shall find ourselves face to face with this goodness and with the long-suffering of God, who for His part did everything that had to be done for us, while we showed ourselves unworthy and ungrateful. This last prophecy that was just read is a prophecy that could be called a Gospel, because Isaiah, who was mentioned earlier, is considered the fifth evangelist. Even though he lived eight hundred and fifty years before Christ, he writes like a historian, as though he were watching it all from close up. And he saw the whole affair of Golgotha, and its whole meaning, and why He went up onto the Cross.

Some people think that Christ came into the world to arrange feasts and comforts for people, or to give them a moment's respite, a bit of rest, or the enjoyment of more good things in this world. Yes, these things are given by God for us to enjoy, but we ought also to value certain gestures of God. "For us," he says, and "for us He suffers." If He has no form and no beauty left, if all the blood and serum has drained out of Him, it did not drain for His own sins: "for our sins," he says, "He bears our sins." And when He is so open-handed and so good as to accept taking our sins upon Himself and paying for them, why do we not value this as we should, and why do we not listen to Him?

in what He says. Whether we want it or not, one day we shall stand face to face with His justice. We are not dealing merely with the son of Mary; we are dealing with the Son of God as well. Because the One who went up there is not only man, He is also God. That is the serious point. And when a God suffers such things and stoops to pay for human sin with His own blood, will He then ask nothing of us? Will we never give an account for our own deeds, if we do not repent and turn back? Whether we want it or not, we shall be brought to the place He came to willingly. He came of His own free will; He came to the voluntary passion. It was not the Jews who took Him up there, as some say; His love took Him up there. For if He had not willed to be sacrificed for the people and to give for the people

the ransom that was owed to His Father's justice, His own blood, He would never have gone up; He was God as well. No man could lay a hand on Him. Other times He slipped away through the middle of them, using His human nature. This is the One who passed through closed doors. This is the One who dwelt in His mother's womb and came forth and left her womb sealed and closed. And He could not escape from the Jews? He came to the voluntary passion; our Church says so, but we pay no attention. "He came to the voluntary passion," the willing passion; He was moved by love for man. All these things that took place today, which we shall hear shortly in the Gospel of the Apokathelosis, are events that have to do with God, not with man. The thief on the right said to the one on the left: we are suffering justly; everything that is happening here is happening because of us.

The darkness that lasts six hours happens because of us; the earthquake that happens, happens because of us; the tombs that open, open because of us; everything that happens, happens because of us, and it happens for the sake of the One in the middle. All these things taking place today prove the divinity of Christ. The prophecies, the images and the symbols that are fulfilled in the person of Jesus show that He is the One being pointed out, the One a person must pay attention to. There is no salvation by self, no salvation by works, no salvation by the world. Christ is our salvation. That is exactly why Peter, and Luke repeating him in Acts 4:12, says — do you know what he says? There is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved. There is no one else.

Abraham cannot save us; he did not even save himself. Nor can Adam, nor Daniel the greatly beloved. No one can save us: not an angel, not an archangel, not even the Most Holy Theotokos can save us. Christ saves, God saves, and it is His blood that cleanses us from every sin. The prophets wrote that for His thirst they would give Him gall, and they gave it. David writes this one thousand and fifty years before Christ. The prophet said that they would cast lots for His garment, and they cast lots precisely so as not to cut it up and ruin it, that seamless tunic that our Most Holy Theotokos had woven for Him. Here, as it says, Isaiah saw Him eight hundred years before Christ:

"He was numbered with the transgressors" — and indeed He was numbered between two criminals. But he also saw that in the tomb He would be with the rich, and indeed Nicodemus and Joseph, that rich councillor, buried Him with honour and with expense. Amos sees, seven hundred and fifty years before Christ, that there will be darkness at full midday. And there is darkness at full midday. It is not only the Gospels that record it; the historians record it too, that in the two hundred and second Olympiad there was darkness at full midday. For whom did it happen? For me it happened. For us it happened; or was it for anyone else? For Him it happened. Christ had types in the Old Testament in every detail, both of Himself and of His passion. The first and most important was Joseph the All-Comely; that is why the Church appointed his feast, so that his story and his life would be commemorated on the first day of Holy Week: "we make remembrance of Joseph the All-Comely." Among the other things that took place

and that were connected with Christ, there was this too: they put him into an empty pit.

An empty tomb, empty — in Greek kenon, spelled with an epsilon, meaning empty, an empty pit. That is where his brothers put him until they sold him. And there his brother Judah sold him for pieces of silver, just as here Judas sells Him for pieces of silver. And they laid Christ too in a kainon tomb — this time spelled with alpha and iota, meaning new. And the Evangelist notes in parenthesis that no one had ever been laid in it until that day. Why does this happen? At the Crucifixion and at the burial such measures are taken that the Resurrection could never be slandered. If Christ had been buried in an ordinary tomb belonging to Joseph, to Joseph's family, there would have been room for slander, for people to say afterwards that Christ did not rise by His own power,

but that He rose by the power of the relics of some holy prophets that happened to be in that tomb. Because there is an incident in the Old Testament: once they threw a dead man into the tomb of the Prophet Elisha, and when he touched the prophet's relics, he rose. So in order to forestall this too, so that the Jews or anyone else could not say that He did not rise by His own power but by the power of the relics of some prophet, they lay Him in a new tomb. Just as they put his type of that earlier age, Joseph the All-Comely, into an empty one, as I am telling you. There is also another measure taken today to secure the genuineness of the Resurrection, and that was the manner of the burial. Christ was buried according to the Jewish customs. The Jews, even to this day,

anoint their dead with myrrh and aloes. Myrrh and aloes are an adhesive substance, like resin. Apart from the essence they draw out of it, the rest of the material is something like resin. And they would anoint the whole body, wrap it in the sheet, and bury it. What was soft would dry out and become like granite. But tomorrow, when He rises, the linen cloths, the sheets, will be found lying there. They say the body was stolen. If it was stolen, how is it that they did not steal the sheets as well, since the sheets were stuck fast to Him? A thief who goes to steal something — nobody carries along cauldrons of water to dip the body in, to unstick the sheets from it and then leave them behind. And besides, why would he leave them?

You see, you shove the body in a sack, they throw it over their shoulder and off they go. They steal Him, presumably, sack and all. This is exactly what the providence of God had anticipated, so that the manner of the burial would itself guarantee the genuineness of the Resurrection. And of course, at the Resurrection the soudarion is also found, and that soudarion again proves and bears witness that He is risen and is not there. And it means something for us that we believe in a God who truly died, according to His humanity, for love of us, and was buried, and also rose. Because there are others too who lay claim to divinity, and others who present themselves as heads of religions. They are not religion; they are man-made creeds. There is only one religion, the religion of Jesus, whose founder has an empty tomb. All the other founders, whether he is called Mohammed, or

Buddha, or Zoroaster, or the Pope, or Luther, or Russell — any founder of a religion whatsoever lies fixed in his own grave. The only tomb that is empty is Christ's. The only one Hades could not hold is Christ. This is a fundamental thing, and it is built today by the very manner of the burial. It is no accident that He was buried in a new tomb, that He was buried according to the Jewish customs, and that afterwards the sheets and that cloth, the soudarion, remained as witnesses for the defence of the Resurrection. And of course we also have the witnesses, the angels, who say, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, He is risen." But even if all of this were silenced, Christ had said prophetically:

if these are silent, the stones will cry out. The sheets will speak, He says; the stones will speak; everything will speak of My Resurrection and, in general, of My divinity. This is why I say that what happens today is a great event, and our faithful have not grasped it. At their own mother's funeral they would not eat today, they would not go out, they would not go anywhere, out of respect for the person who died. But when it is the funeral of their God, they are indifferent. Why? Because God does not grab a person by the ear. He does not take offence; the loss will fall on the person himself, the one who does not live as he ought and as he must. So I do not know how you hold these things, how you have grasped them and how you face them. Are you celebrating the passion, or are you living the passion? That is the question.

The person who does not live the passion and does not see the Resurrection, but simply keeps the feast, has nothing to gain from it. He is merely a passer-by; he passes through, just as in Greek the word for reading comes from the word for passing through. He does not study, he does not go deep, he does not understand what it is all about; and he does not understand because he never asked Him to give him the way to understand. Because if Christ does not give a person the special spectacles, however clever he may be, how will he manage it? He may reach the moon, and still not know what is going on twenty-two centimetres in here, inside his own soul. That is the point. Another thing that shows the divinity of Jesus and His love for man is the manner of His death. Christ died in a different way. He did not die the way people die. With Christ it was the other way round, as you heard. What did the last Gospel say, and what will it say again in the Gospel

of the Apokathelosis? How do people die, have you ever thought about it? They give up the spirit and then the head drops. Yes or no? That is how it is. But Christ — open your ears in a moment and listen — with Him it was: "having bowed His head, He gave up the spirit." He dies at the hour He chooses. They do not put Him to death; He dies out of love. "I lay down My life," He says, "and I take it up again. I give it Myself; no one takes it from Me," because I am the author of life. This must be valued, we must pay attention to it. And it happens not only to show that He comes willingly to the voluntary passion, that He goes up to Jerusalem to be handed over — that is not the only reason — but so that He may be pointed out, because it was necessary

that He should die at the moment He willed, so that they would not break His legs, as they broke the other thief's legs so that he would die. So that they would find Him whole, entire, with none of His bones crushed. Because in the Old Testament there was a type of Christ. Pascha is not the roast-lamb Pascha that we have made of it. The Passover goes back one thousand four hundred and fifty years before Christ; you will find it written in the twelfth chapter of Exodus. And there God had given a commandment about the lamb the Jews were to slaughter, whose blood they would gather and smear on the doorposts of their houses, so that the angel would not destroy the firstborn. That lamb they were to eat roasted — that is where our own spit-roast lamb comes from. And they were not to break its bones. They would set it on a spit between two forked stakes, and they would take off the meat and leave the skeleton whole,

and that would point to the Lamb of God who would be slain one day, and of whom it would be said, "not a bone of Him shall be crushed." There is a special reason for this, especially since Pilate, when he learned that He had died, was astonished: has He died so quickly? The others had not died, so they came and broke the legs of those two who were crucified on either side of Jesus. Jesus they found already dead. The Roman soldier doubted for a moment whether He was really dead and how far, as you like, and he gave Him a thrust with the lance, a spear-thrust in His side. And that, he says, was no accident. And out came blood and water — and according to medical science, the separation of the serum from the blood proves that He had died. And at the same time, as the Fathers say, He established His Church upon the Cross: the water is Baptism, and the blood is Holy Communion.

Without these two Mysteries there is no salvation. And at the same time, the side of the new Adam was pierced in order to heal the side of the old Adam. The old Adam had for his side Eve, who dragged humanity down into death; and now the new side of the new Adam is pierced and pours out blood and water, to save the descendants of Eve. These are no small events that are taking place. And there are moral lessons here as well. On Golgotha today three crosses are set up. We, for the most part, see one cross, or two — the third cross we do not see. Why? Because many people say, "I will do what the thief did: I will say 'Remember me.' There is no need for me to fast, no need to make prostrations, no need to practise self-control, no need to receive Communion, no need to confess —"

"— I will just say 'Remember me,' as the thief said." Yes — but when did the thief say that "Remember me"? Does "Remember me" apply in the New Testament? The thief said his "Remember me" before Christ said, "It is finished." The proof is that they are still speaking with one another. And Christ says to him, "Today you will be with me in Paradise." But from the moment Christ rose, things changed. That very evening, when he rose, Christ said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained; and if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven." He commanded them to go out and preach and baptise the world: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

"He who believes and is baptised will be saved; he who does not believe will be condemned." He instituted Holy Communion: "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him; and I will raise him up on the last day." Consequently there is no "Remember me" in the New Testament. The thief's "Remember me" belongs to the Old Testament, to the old covenant. Christ, coming into the world, established a new way of salvation; he did not establish the arrangement of the Old Testament. Why, then, do you hang on one incident that cannot benefit you? Take it instead as a kind of lesson in faith — take it that way. Because if you had a quick conversation with the thief and said to him, "How is it that you see this man as Lord? Isn't he condemned along with you, aren't you in the same row?" — yes, you could ask him that. If you said to him, where do you see that he is Lord, and where do you see that he has a kingdom? For he says to him, "Remember me, Lord, when you come into your kingdom." Where do you see the kingdom? How do you make it out? Here is the whole matter of faith, because faith —

— as Paul gives its definition — is the evidence of things not seen. He holds fast to something without seeing it. And he also discerned that the whole affair there was happening for the Messiah; that the Messiah is a person set apart, not like the two of us. From where? From the events I described to you a little earlier. He knew that all of this was not happening for himself: not the earthquake, not the burial, not the protest of humanity and of nature, which veils the light so that the outrage of the creature against the Creator should not be seen. And he understood that these things were happening for the Messiah. That is why this one cannot be an ordinary man like us. This is the one who holds all things together — that is why you recognise him. Take the moral teaching of the thief for that detail. But as for the "Remember me," do not take it. Be careful to be in step with what Christ left in his inn —

— through which he acts by means of his innkeepers. My beloved, a person is not saved outside the Church. Christ took the man who had fallen among the thieves and brought him into the Church. He brought him to the inn and handed him over to the innkeepers, the clergy — whether we like them or whether we do not. Christ himself works through them. And if they are unworthy, they will be judged tomorrow; but we will be saved. Because many people stand far away from the Church and the Mysteries — they do not confess, they do not receive Communion, they do not come to church — supposedly because of the misconduct of the clergy. Judas was rotten within the company of the Twelve. Peter denied him with an oath. Peter's weakness is not something that should be allowed to pass unnoticed. Peter, if you like, sinned more than Judas did.

And Thomas, who grumbled at him — come closer, I take that into account as well. Three out of the Twelve were flawed. And if that was so among men whom he himself chose, how much more today — what must there be now? Christ has not left us, my beloved, to be saved by the holiness of the clergy. They are not the representatives of God, as the papists say, or as certain brainless people among us say. They are instruments of God — instruments, a wire that the current passes through. It would be good if they were galvanised; but even if they are rusty, the current still passes through. How am I to get my business done? The doctor I take my sister to is a dishonourable man, an immoral man — and yet I take her to him so that he can operate on her and I can get what I need done. When I go to buy a ticket, I don't investigate who it is that issues it. The man whose place I go to eat at, I don't investigate him. The place I go to sleep, I don't investigate it. Why then, in everything else, do I not investigate but simply go in trust and get my business done, while in these matters Satan puts me —

— up to standing outside and waiting for an angel, so that I may receive it from an angel? What good did it do Judas that he took the bread, the morsel, from Christ's own hands? You came to church last night, you heard it: "after he took the bread, Satan entered into him." What good did Christ's holiness do him, since he himself was wicked? But that is not the issue. The issue is the bread. So let us not stay away from the Church on the pretext that the clergy are rotten, because that too is a trick of Satan to keep a person back. Would that they were saints — but they are not. If God sent us angels to hear our confessions, the angels would take our heads off. Do angels understand our filth? They would take our heads off. That is why he has permitted men of flesh, men who live in this world, to condescend to another man's weakness, so that a person's salvation may be arranged. So there are three crosses up there, and they carry their moral lessons and their doctrinal ones. What is the other thief waiting for, the one on the left?

He did not say "Remember me" as well; he was waiting for Christ to come down — and there was no such possibility. What does that mean? It means that when a person sins deliberately and goes on remaining in his sin without repenting, without confessing and so on, in the end his heart is hardened, and even though he sees the abyss in front of him, he cannot repent. That is what happened in this case too: he could not repent. Satan held him fast and forbade him to say anything himself about the other one. That is exactly why the matter of the three crosses must be taken seriously, and why I should always keep it in mind. What if I become hardened? What if I give the devil so many rights over me that tomorrow he will not let me say "I have sinned," will not let me call a priest and confess, and so on? That, again, is a serious matter. Another thing that speaks to us about the Resurrection of the one who is being buried tonight is —

— the prophecy from Job that was read. What do you know about Job? Job lived five generations after Abraham, as was said. What business does he have now with your Crucifixion, with your burial and with your Resurrection? Why does the Church bring this text into the middle of everything, and specifically the last chapter of the book of Job? Do you know why? I don't know whether you are aware of it: Job went through a trial. He had, for example, two thousand sheep, two thousand oxen, two thousand donkeys; he had seven children, and so on. God gave the devil permission to destroy them. And indeed Satan destroyed everything, and the children as well. In the end, when Job was restored after his trial, God doubled what he had. He had two thousand oxen — now four thousand. He had two thousand donkeys — four thousand.

Everything doubled; but as for children, he gave him seven again. If you doubled everything else for him, why did you not double the children too? The children are doubled as well. The animals passed into nothingness, so I give them back double; but the children I keep with me — I hold their souls. He has the seven from before, and I give him another seven: he will have fourteen. And all this is said in order to speak about the Resurrection: that souls, although they depart from here, are not lost, as the Jehovah's Witnesses say, but they exist. That is the teaching. That is the purpose the Church has in mind when she presses this passage from Job into service and places it there. Our Christ preached here, and he went down into Hades and preached there. His Forerunner preached here, went down into Hades and preached. And all those who received him, he —

— gave life: "and to those in the tombs bestowing life." How many years did Christ preach in the world? Thirty-three. How many hours did he spend in Hades? Thirty-three hours. From three o'clock this afternoon until midnight tomorrow, going into Sunday. As many years as he lived on earth, that many hours he lived in Hades. These were not random events. Here he spoke through his Forerunner, and he himself spoke with flesh and with spirit, to people who have flesh and spirit. And he gave the message in Hades too, and preached to the spirits in prison in Hades. Before Christ there was no Hell and no Paradise — you should know this. There was one place, and everyone went there: Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all of them. And the Honourable Forerunner went there, and Christ went there too and preached. And all who believed in him were made alive.

That is what the hymn means: "and to those in the tombs bestowing life." He kept in Hades exactly the same order he had kept here while he was alive. And he remained thirty-three hours in Hades, and Christ rose. And things change; the whole scene changes. Afterwards they wanted to slander it, as we said. But the matter is so tightly bound together — the whole affair of the Crucifixion and of the burial is so tightly bound — that they cannot slander the Resurrection. The Resurrection is a fact, and it stands, as I told you, to this very day. The tomb of the only leader of the true religion, of Jesus, is empty. And the Church makes an effort to bring forward certain eyewitnesses who can tell us something —

— to tell us that Christ truly rose; because, as you know, today and back then and always, the Resurrection of Jesus is disputed. Even our own forefathers: when Paul brought them the preaching of Christ here in Athens, the moment they came to the point that Christ had risen, they broke off the discussion. It seemed so laughable to them, such nonsense, that they said to him, let us take up that subject some other time. And so today too there are people, and in the days of our Christ there were people, and unfortunately there will always be people, who dispute the Resurrection of Jesus.

A person does not want to hear; he would rather see. And I don't know whether this happens with us as well. I say: if I don't see it, I don't believe it. I want to see it for myself. But when you see, that is no longer faith — then it is knowledge. Still, our Christ condescends to human weakness and allows a person to be given assurance. The things he ought to have learned through hearing, Christ lets him learn through the other senses as well, so that hearing alone is not the only thing used. I heard that he rose — yes, I believe it, but let me see it as well. And that is why —

— the Church brings forward and presents today, on the first Sunday, the first man who doubted the Resurrection of Jesus. And indeed one from his own close circle. Because, as you know, Thomas is one of the inner circle, one of the twelve of his own staff, so to speak. And yet even he wanted to see. He wanted to use his sense of touch as well, one of the five senses. "Unless I put my finger into his side," he says, "I will not believe." He declared it openly. And that is exactly why, I say, the Church presents this eyewitness, who was in a way broken, so that he might help all the modern Thomases of every century.

Thomas stands in the middle and says: "Sir, you were born two thousand years later — and you dispute the Resurrection of Jesus. I was there; will you not at least believe me, that I represented you there at that time? Have you never read what happened with me, that I too said, if I do not see, I will not believe? Why don't you believe?" That is why the Apostle and Evangelist Thomas is today both a witness for the prosecution and a witness for the defence — depending on how each person will use him. It is a serious thing, whether Christ rose. Because if Christ did not rise, there is nothing. We are all lost. We will go down to Hades, and Hades will keep us. But Glory to God, Christ is risen, and he became the firstborn from the dead.

No one can hold us any longer, so long as we believe in him, the conqueror of death. You saw how they received Christ on Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, with palm branches, as the conqueror of death.

He conquered the death of Lazarus and gave him life; in the same way he conquered our own death; and in the same way he conquers, on our behalf, every death — provided that we believe it. The Church insists on this, because it is a serious matter: everything stands or falls on the divinity of Jesus and on the Resurrection of Jesus. These are the two legs a person must stand on.

— whether he is God, and whether Christ rose. Because if he is not God, or if Christ did not rise, there is no salvation. Everything, then, stands or falls on the divinity of Jesus and on the Resurrection of Jesus.

Next Sunday the Church will present another group, a company of women, the myrrh-bearers, who also went to anoint our Christ with myrrh early in the morning on Pascha itself, and found the tomb empty. These women are further witnesses. We went, they say, and we found the tomb empty. How can you tell us that he did not rise? We found the linen cloths there, the linens lying there. We found the soudarion, the cloth they had tied around his head, folded up in one place — we went there ourselves. We spoke with an angel, and the angel said to us, "Why do you seek here? Jesus the Nazarene, the crucified one, is not here; what has happened? He is risen. You will meet him in Galilee, as he told you." These are further witnesses. And even so, there come people who believe Plato

— thousands of years before Christ; they believe Aristotle; they believe, they believe, they believe — but Christ they do not believe, and he is more recent as a historical figure. And it would be one thing if others did this, but we Greeks do it too — we who would still be worshipping stones today, the way our grandfathers worshipped them, who had made themselves twelve gods and sent them off to Olympus. And today we do not believe — we, to whom Paul came here in Athens and preached this Christ, and we ought to have believed him and held on to him the way Saint Dionysius the Areopagite held on to him, and Damaris, and others; and some of us do hold him to this day. But some have bartered him away, or never accepted him at all, and they do not believe in Christ, neither as God nor as risen. The whole thing strikes them as ridiculous.

I say it to you and I repeat it: the two legs on which our religion stands.

Our religion on the one hand, and our salvation on the other, come down to this: whether Christ is God, and whether Christ rose. Christ is both God and man; he is the God-Man. As man he ate, as man he asked questions, as man he wept. But it was God who opened tombs, God who drove out devils, God who walked upon the sea, God who fashioned eyes with a little spittle and a little clay. These are the things a person must know and believe absolutely. Because when you see the Church insisting on this — what does she want with these women? what are these people trying to tell you? — it is so that you will understand that Christ is risen, that the tomb of the Christ of your faith is empty. The tombs of all the other founders of religions are sealed, and the men are still inside them: the Muslims have Mohammed, and the Buddhists have Buddha.

All the other heads of the so-called churches and religions are inside their graves. There is only one empty tomb. The tomb of the head of Orthodoxy, the head of the right faith — his tomb is empty. And if you go there today, you will find it still empty. “He is not here, he is risen.” So the question of the Resurrection of Jesus is fundamental, I repeat, and so, as I said, is the Godhead of Jesus. Christ condescends to Thomas’s weakness. How did the Apostles describe it to him last Sunday? “Here, upstairs where we are, with the doors shut, he came and stood in our midst and said to us, ‘Peace be unto you,’ twice. He even breathed on us and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. Whosesoever sins you forgive, they are forgiven unto them; whosesoever sins you retain, they are retained.’”

A Mystery full of love for mankind — coming back from death, coming back from Hades, he established this Mystery of love for mankind: the Mystery of metanoia, of repentance, and of Holy Confession. For there is no one who does not sin. Just try, you women, putting away the brooms and the dusting cloths you use around the house — the house turns filthy. Only by that constant upkeep is cleanliness kept. Throw out the soap and the towels and the water, and we will start to stink. Exactly the same thing happens with the soul. A person’s soul sins in word, in deed, in thought. Whether with the hands, or the ears, or the eyes, or with speech, or with the flesh, it sins; it gets dirty. And it too has need of a washing-basin. That basin is repentance and Confession. That is what he instituted last Sunday evening, when he rose.

Coming from the tomb, he instituted this Mystery. That is how they described it to Thomas. Thomas was not there by coincidence — by human coincidence, that is. I would rather say that by God’s own arrangement he was not there. So that the Resurrection would be doubted, and so that Christ could then prove the Resurrection to Thomas as well, and there would be a witness for the defence, or for the prosecution. That is how I believe it. So they told all this to Thomas. And Thomas says, “Is it true?” Yes — John told him so, Matthew told him so, the next one told him so, all of them, every one, and so on. “All right, lads, fine, I believe you and so forth. But I wanted it for myself as well. So — not until I see him too. And if possible, until I touch him: until I put my finger into his side, into the marks of the nails, and so on.”

“I still have — how shall I put it — I am holding something back; there is something left in me. I cannot give myself over completely and believe.” Christ, being God, knows all this, even though he is not present. And eight days later — that is today — keeping to the very same forms in which it had been described to him, with the doors shut he stood in their midst and said, “Peace be unto you.” There it is: that evening, exactly as it had happened the Sunday before, with the doors shut, he stood in the midst and says to them, “Peace be unto you.” Only now Thomas is there. Just as they had told him, Christ kept the same scene again, the same forms; and he turns to him and takes him, so to speak, by the ear — in a manner of speaking — and says to him, “You, come here, and put your finger into the print of the nails, and be not faithless, but believing.”

“…be not faithless.” Is this the “doubting Thomas” some people talk about — “away with you, doubting Thomas”? No. Thomas was hard to convince; he wanted full proof. Yes, inside himself he believed, but if he could see it for himself, it would be different. And indeed it would have been different. Because when the Apostles went out and preached to those brutes of that day, if one of the audience had stood up and said, “Hey there, preacher, you tell us this man rose — did you see him yourself?” and he had said, “I did not see him, but they told me,” the answer would have been, “Leave us alone.” But now, if such a question were put to him: yes, I saw him. And I was badly put to shame, too. He took me straight by the ear and corrected me on the spot and told me to put my finger into the print of the nails. I saw him myself.

That is exactly what gave the Apostles their strength — because they had seen him, they went as far as martyrdom. You know, not one of them died a natural death. Some they crucified upside down, some they killed, some they beheaded; not one was left, of those who dared to speak about the Resurrection of Christ. Because a great war broke out immediately, as soon as the Resurrection was spread abroad by the soldiers who were keeping guard. A great war broke out, and a great deal of Jewish money was spent so that the Resurrection of Christ would not be discussed. “You will say,” they told them, “that while you were asleep his disciples came and stole him.” “But if we say we were asleep, they will stand us against the wall, because we are a detachment under orders. How can we say we were asleep — they posted us on guard and we fell asleep?” “We,” they said, “will pay, and we will persuade them, and keep you out of trouble.” And just as money was spent then to shut mouths on the subject of Jesus, so it is being spent to this day. Money used in this way harms mankind — not only us Greeks, but the whole human race — at least as far as the soul is concerned. And you heard: Scripture does not say whether Thomas dared to put his hand on the body of Christ. Our hymnography, however, speaks to us today of the touching by Thomas. But Scripture does say that as soon as he saw these things he cried out — for Christ forestalled him from the very beginning, speaks to him without any discussion at all, knows what is happening within him, and so on. He cried out, “My Lord and my God!” That is: you are my Lord and my God. And from then on things had changed.

But two words of correction for Thomas: “Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed,” he says to him. You saw me, he says, and you believed; I do not call you blessed. “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Because if, for example, I show you this and tell you it is a watch, and you can see that it is a watch, and you say it is not — then you are not right in the head. And if you say to me now, “Oh, of course I believe it is a watch” — how do you believe it? You do not believe it. Faith means the evidence of things not seen. That is the definition Paul gives in the eleventh of Hebrews, the first verse. Faith, he says, is the evidence of things not seen: I have evidence for things even though I do not see them. That is what faith means. But faith presupposes humility. The egotist, though, does not believe: “Ah, I saw for myself. I saw it and I worked it out myself.”

That egotism, which clings to the one thing it has seen, stinks before God, it stinks before Christ, and he will not have it. He wants a person who is humble, with a humble mind, and who believes even at the risk of being taken in. Because when our Christ sees that a person believes with the simplicity of a little child, then he is moved; and if that person has taken some crooked road, he still finds the way to set him right and bring him back to the right road, to exactly the place where you must believe rightly, so that the two of them may meet one day. “Blessed,” he says, “are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” To you, “Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed.” And we are — those of us, at least, who believe rightly — we are among…

…among those he called blessed then, because we were not there, as you know. We were born two thousand years later; others were there in those days. We heard it from tradition, we read it from the Evangelists; and we go, even today, to the Holy Places, and we see the tomb of our God under Muslim and Jewish custodianship, and we see that it has not been wiped out, although for two thousand years many hostile forces have been working to erase the name of Christ from the earth. And yet, there to this day are the imprints of Christ’s passing: where he was born, where he was arrested, where his Mother, the Most Holy Theotokos, was buried, where he ascended into the heavens. They are still there to this day, and perhaps some of you have been counted worthy to reach the very places where Christ walked and suffered and was buried and rose, and you may have a particular understanding of the things I am telling you.

What our Christ once said is being fulfilled: “If you keep silent” — if people keep silent about my Resurrection — “the stones will cry out.” The stones will speak, he says, just as the linen sheet is speaking now, for example. Because when the sheet is lying there — the linen cloths are the sheets, “the linen cloths lying” — and you say that he did not rise, then I say that he did. You have been paid off, you are corrupt, you are faithless; but I, the lifeless thing, will speak, and I will say this: if my master had been stolen, the thing they had wrapped him in would have had to be taken as well. Since they did not take me, then my Christ, my master, was not stolen. Because — I do not know whether you know this, and it is a basic point, so allow me to tell you.

For a person to be able to understand whether Christ rose, he has to follow the events of Holy Friday. How was Christ buried? Christ was buried according to the Jewish custom. The Jewish custom was that the dead man be smeared with an adhesive substance, something like resin, which came from myrrh and aloes. Myrrh and aloes, besides the essence they give off — that is, the fragrance — leave behind a residue like resin. With this they would smear the whole of the dead body and then bind it up afterwards, the way we put a bandage on the arms and legs; they would wrap the whole dead body, and then it would set like granite. That is to say, the sheet, the wrapping over the whole body, would turn to granite.

Was it possible for such a thing to be peeled off there? And if he was stolen, how did they get it off? To unstick that sheet, they would have had to bring cauldrons of hot water there, put him in, soak him, and so on, and then start slowly working that sheet loose and taking it off. But why take the sheet off at all? When you steal something, or I do, is that how it is done? They throw a blanket down, they toss the thing on top, two of them take hold of it, sling it over their shoulders and off they go. Or they drop it into a sack, two of them take it by the corners, pick it up and off they go. Why leave the sheet there, and why take the sheet off? So he was not stolen; he rose miraculously. Second: that cloth, the soudarion, which they tie around the head — how was it found wrapped together in a place by itself?

Folded. He folded it — and why would they have folded it? So he was not stolen; Christ is risen. And a person needs to learn this thing, that Christ is risen, and to believe in the Resurrection of Christ. He must not listen to the fairy tales of Satan and of this one and that one. Because the person who does not believe in the Resurrection will not see his own resurrection as he would wish. Someone will say: will he not be raised? He will be raised, but it would be better for him not to be raised, because there will be two resurrections. When the graves open one day, doves will come out of certain tombs, but ravens will come out of other tombs. For the grave is a sincere friend, a faithful friend, and whatever you entrust to it, it will keep. What will you entrust to it when you die? Faith, repentance, Confession…

…faith in Christ — that is what it will give back. Faithlessness, indifference, unrepentance, not receiving Holy Communion — that is what it will hand back. So if you give it a dove of a soul, at the resurrection it will give back a dove. If you give it a raven of a soul, it will give you back a raven; whatever you give it. Because death, you see, is a camera lens. At the moment you die, it will take you in one pose. Whatever that pose of the soul may be — if you are repentant, confessed, set in order, with the right faith — you will go to the right as a dove, and on that day you will rise a dove. But if you leave this life faithless, indifferent, sinful, unrepentant, unconfessed, and so on, you will go to the left, and you will come out on that day, but you will come out as a raven. All the graves will open; “and not one dead remains in the tomb,” says the divine John Chrysostom in his Catechetical Homily.

No one will remain down there. But what will he be — will he be white, or will he be black? That depends on the man himself, on what use he makes of his sojourn in this world. So during these days, pay attention to all the teachings. After the Resurrection, the Church will prove the Resurrection of Jesus through eyewitnesses: through Thomas today, through the Myrrh-bearing Women the day after tomorrow. And from then on, other Sundays will begin, with other events, which will prove the Godhead of Jesus.

When a man has been paralysed for thirty-eight years and with a single word he makes him well, what is this? Is this a man? He must be God as well, to have such power. When a Samaritan woman who had had five husbands, and the sixth was not her own — you understand what kind of life she was living — and in a fraction of a second she is changed…

This woman of Samaria, once darkened, became the one we now call Saint Photini, the enlightened one. And she had the power to draw along with her, by her faith and by her life, six of her own sisters, so that they too became martyrs. Read the account of her martyrdom, on the twenty-sixth of February, and see what that corrupt woman of those days accomplished, from one moment when she met Christ at a well, where she had gone to draw water. And when he spits on the ground and makes an eye out of saliva and dirt, what is that? That is the divinity of Jesus. That is why in these days the Church sets before us the Resurrection of Jesus. Later on she will set before us the divinity of Jesus. That is how we must come to know Christ, and that is how we must believe in Christ. Because we need two oars if we are going to make the voyage to eternity. One oar is called Orthodoxy; the other is called Orthopraxy.

To believe in God, but not to do what God says, means my little boat is not making the voyage to eternity. I believe in Christ, but Christ said, do not steal. You who steal, how do you believe in God? He said, do not commit fornication, do not commit adultery, do not kill your children. He said to fast, to do this, to do that. How do you believe in God if you do not do these things? Both oars are needed: right faith, that he is God and that he died, was buried, and rose again; and right praxis, right action, within the limits of your strength. These two oars are what carry a person toward eternity. So then, if you believe that our God does all things well and orders our affairs, let us also pay attention to our own lives, let our faith grow, and let us show everyone that if people do not become Christians it is because they do not want to. Not because they did not see Christ, not because they were not at Capernaum, not because they were not at Caesarea and so on, where miracles were happening. Miracles happen today as well.

Christ, just as he kept to the very same wording and the very same scene and helped Thomas, who back then was slow to be convinced, does the same today. Christ, do you exist? I have heard, I have read, that there is a Christ, that God became man. Is it true? I beg you, I am ready to listen to you and to do whatever you tell me, if you will show me that it is so. That very moment he will have his answer. God did not die. The God who died is alive. He is not here, he is risen, it says. God lives. And just as all the faithful of Christ pass from this world into the other, they pass through it standing upright: their shell, their dust, they leave in the earth, and their soul passes on from here. For those who believe in Christ, though they die, yet shall they live. That is the truth. That is how things stand, and that is how the Church will set them before us. And that is what is to the benefit of a person's soul, to know it from here, so as not to find everything in confusion there.

Ώστε να μένω απ' έξω και να περιμένω άγγελο, να πάρω απ' τον άγγελο. Τι ωφελήθη ο Ιούδας που πήρε απ' του Χριστού τα χέρια του το ψωμί, το στελότο; Ήρθατε χθες το βράδυ στην Εκκλησία, ακούσατε. Ο λαβών τον άρτον, ο σατανάς εισήλθε εις αυτόν. Τι τον ωφέλησε η αγιότητα του Χριστού, εφόσον αυτός ήταν πονηρός; Αλλά δεν είναι αυτό το θέμα. Θέμα είναι το άρτο. Μην λοιπόν μείνουμε μακριά από την εκκλησία δήθεν ότι είναι σκάρτη η κληρική, γιατί και αυτό είναι ένα τέχνασμα του σατανά να κρατάει τον άνθρωπο. Μακάρι να είναι Άγιοι, αλλά δεν είναι. Αν μας στείλει τους αγγέλους να μας εξομολογήσουν, θα μας πάρουν το κεφάλι οι άγγελοι. Καταλαβαίνουν οι άγγελοι από τις βρωμιές τις δικές μας; Θα μας πάρουν το κεφάλι. Γι' αυτό έχει επιτρέψει σε ανθρώπους σαρκικούς που υπάρχουν στον κόσμο τούτο να συγκαταβαίνουν στην αδυναμία του άλλου ανθρώπου και να οικονομείται η σωτηρία του ανθρώπου. Υπάρχουν λοιπόν τρεις σταυροί εκεί πάνω που έχουν τα ηθικά τους διδάγματα και τα δογματικά τους. Τι περιμένει ο ληστής, ο άλλος ο εξ ευωνύμων;

Δυνατόν αυτό το πράγμα να ξεκολλήσει από εκεί πέρα; Και εφόσον εκλάπη, πώς το ξεκόλλησαν; Για να ξεκολλήσουν αυτό το σεντόνι έπρεπε να μεταφέρουν εκεί καζάνια με ζεστό νερό, να τον βάλουν μέσα, να τον μουλιάσουν κλπ. Και να πιάσουν σιγά σιγά να ξεκολλήσουν το σεντόνι αυτό, να το βγάλουν. Αλλά γιατί να το βγάλουν το σεντόνι; Όταν κλέβεις εσύ ή εγώ, έτσι κλέβουν; Βάζουν κάτω μια κουβέρτα, το πετάνε πάνω, το πιάνουν δυο, το κόβουν στον ώμο και φεύγουν. Ή το ρίχνουν σε ένα τσουβάλι μέσα της ρήγας, το πιάνουν από την άκρη δυο, το παίρνουν και φεύγουν. Γιατί να το αφήσουν το σεντόνι εκεί και γιατί να το βγάλουν το σεντόνι; Άρα δεν εκλάπη, θαυματουργικώς ανέστη. Δεύτερον, αυτό το μαντήλι, το σουδάριον που δένουν το κεφάλι, πώς ευρέθη τετυλιγμένον σε ένα τόπο;
