Summary

Authentic prayer requires concentrated attention and an inward turning toward God, not distracted words or careless gestures. True prayer seeks repentance, holiness, guidance, and the salvation of others more than health, travel, success, or other material benefits. Union with Christ through prayer brings spiritual clarity, courage, and freedom from fear, because sin—not suffering or death—is the only true evil.

This is something that concerns everyone, and especially those who have a good relationship with God. It is something human beings felt from the very beginning, from the moment they came into the world, and in some way they put it into practice.

But because man did not give it the attention he should have, he did not obtain good results. I am speaking about prayer. Many people say that they pray, but they do not truly pray. In order to pray, a person must die. What happens at death must also happen in prayer, if his prayer is to bear any fruit. At death, the body remains below and the spirit goes above. This is exactly what must happen in my prayer as well. When a person supposedly prays, merely stirring the air as he makes something resembling the sign of the Cross, while at the same time daydreaming and watching who is passing by, what people are saying, who is whistling, and who is listening, that prayer can never possibly bear any fruit. It is more like mockery of God, and we are deceiving ourselves as well. One thing a person will never fully master in this world is prayer. No one—absolutely no one—

has ever attained perfection in prayer. Imagine, then, how far we are from true prayer. Yet at every moment we say that we are praying or that we are at prayer. We see humanity’s need to communicate with God in the first two children of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel. These were the first two people to set up an altar and offer a supplication to God—a prayer to God in their own way. But a person must remember that when he prays, he is praying to Someone.

The One to whom we pray is not some casual friend or acquaintance, someone who can be deceived, someone whose gaze we can evade. He is God, who sees the disposition of the person praying—not how many signs of the Cross he makes, how long they are, or anything of the kind. No. He sees the disposition of the one praying and how that person regards the time he is to spend in prayer. So, as I was saying, the first two people who appear to have prayed in their own way were Cain and Abel. Yet we know that God did not accept Cain’s prayer. Indeed, God’s righteous response provoked Cain’s wickedness, and he became the murderer of his own brother.

The first blood soaked the virgin earth—the blood of one brother shed by another—and this happened because of an offering made in prayer. God is discerning: He looks at the person, at the gifts he offers, and at the prayer he offers. He tried to help Cain so that he would not reach that point, but Cain was unwilling. Holy Scripture tells us that Abel carefully chose the best of what he possessed. He was a shepherd of sheep, and sheep were what he had, so he presented the choicest among them. Cain was a farmer, yet he did not present wheat;

he gathered whatever he had and offered that to God. But God did not accept his sacrifice; He did not accept his prayer. Therefore, when a person stands in prayer, he must remember to whom he is praying, because God desires what is within him: where his prayer comes from, what he feels, and what spiritual state he is in. God may bear with such conduct, but in the end the account will yield no good result. The fact that He tolerates us filling the air with words does not mean that God is listening to us. And if He gives us certain things, that comes from His goodness and love, not from any righteousness of our own. From such prayer we shall receive nothing—no benefit at all.

A person, then, should feel this need just as the first human beings did. They had not attended catechism classes, read a book, or possessed a prayer anthology or prayer book. There were no handbooks for pilgrims then—nothing at all. And yet human beings spontaneously feel the desire to speak with God and have a relationship with Him, precisely because they were made for God and by God. But in the meantime, as you know, sin came between them and made man hostile toward God. Today, man does not want God. He wants Him, of course, as a kind of nurse, and he treats the Most Holy Theotokos in the same way: “Most Holy Theotokos, help me!” he cries in some difficult moment. But afterward, the Theotokos must leave. Once the difficult moment has passed, there is no place for the Theotokos—neither in the home nor

in the bedroom, on the balcony, in fashion, or anywhere else. The Theotokos must remain outside. The results, then, are precisely what I have already said: they follow from our own conduct. “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly,” James the Brother of God writes in his epistle. The most serious matter, therefore, is for a person somehow to learn to pray. Prayer is the oxygen of the soul. A person who does not pray is spiritually dead. Just as natural oxygen is necessary for the lungs and for man’s bodily life, so prayer is necessary for the human soul. A person who does not feel prayer or the need for prayer, and who does not pray, is dead

spiritually, as I have told you. But he must begin sometime. David commands, “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.” This means that from the moment a person opens his eyes in the morning, the words “Glory to You, O God,” “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me,” and “Most Holy Theotokos, shelter me” should never leave his lips. This requires no great effort; it requires willingness. You do not have to leave your work, put down your needle, step away from the washbasin, leave the cooking pot, stop kneading the dough, or abandon your desk. There is no need. Those are lies from Satan. If a person wishes to keep his nous—his spiritual mind—fixed on God, he can do so. When you are in love,

do you forget your beloved while you work? Do you not remember him or her in the car, on the road, while eating, in bed, and everywhere else? Of course you do. But we are not in love with Christ. We do not truly want Him, and that is precisely why we do not remember Him. The Church has appointed seven times of prayer throughout the twenty-four-hour day, yet we take part in almost none of them. Look at us here now: we are lazy, and only occasionally do we come. Who attends Vespers in his own town? Who attends Matins? Who reads the Paraklesis, the supplicatory canon? Who reads the First Hour or the Ninth? Who reads Compline? Who reads the Third Hour and the Sixth? Who reads any of these things? They simply remain there, written in the books.

They are in the prayer anthology, the pilgrim’s handbook, and the Horologion. Yet people say, “Those are for priests and monks; they are not for us.” Then what is for us? “I’ll wait for you on the corner,” or, “Leave your windows open—leave them open tonight.” That is for us; that is for the flesh. But what about the spirit? Do we not have a spirit? Do we not have a soul? Does the soul not need to come into contact with its Creator? Does it have nothing to say to Him? Today we have so many problems that we are close to losing our minds. We have fallen apart, we cannot cope, we have lost our sleep, and the psychiatric hospitals are full—yet we have nothing to say to God. Prayer is conversation with God. None—absolutely none—of God’s other creatures has this right and this privilege of speaking with its Creator. It is a tremendous thing.

Imagine that some prominent acquaintance of yours happens to meet you in the marketplace. What do you do, and what would you like to do? You would want to remain with him as long as possible. On the one hand, you might benefit by hearing some helpful word from him; on the other, others would see that you have connections with important people. Do we not find that flattering? Is it not an honor to speak with the Most Holy Theotokos? Is it not an honor to speak with Christ, the Creator upon whom everything depends? Is it not an honor to speak with your patron Saint and with all the Saints? Yet we do not do it. There is no schedule for prayer. There is a schedule for when the alarm will ring in the morning. There is a schedule for how long I need to shave, drink my coffee, play with the little one or speak with my wife, and so on; how long it will take to reach the bus stop and then the office.

But for prayer, there is nothing. Prayer consists of a caricature of the sign of the Cross as a man goes out of the house, and perhaps, after he leaves, his wife makes the sign of the Cross over him from behind. And that is all. The matter is closed. Then, all day long, the devil makes this head of ours dance to his tune. How can a person go out without prayer? How powerfully prayer guards a person! The divine John Chrysostom says, “Let no one cross the threshold of his door without prayer. Let no one go out without saying, ‘I renounce you, Satan, and I unite myself to You, Christ,’ renouncing your pomp and your worship.” And a person must sign himself properly with the Precious Cross—not merely stir the air, as, unfortunately, I see some men and women doing without ever making the sign of the Cross correctly. Is the devil afraid of these caricatures? Is the devil afraid of such gestures? He fears the Cross.

He remembers the Crucified One. Satan does not recognize the other gestures we make down here, these ridiculous motions. The devil does not know them, and he toys with us like beads in his hand, because he does not fear the sign we make: it is not the Cross. I take this opportunity to emphasize the point once again, especially with these coming days in view, when in a few days the Precious Cross will be set before us. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless His holy name. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.” We hear this here; the Church chants it in the hymns called the Pasapnoaria. What does it mean? It means that a person should speak with God day and night. When he is united with God through prayer, he fears nothing.

He has light in his thoughts, strength in all his powers, and a guide along his path; and in his decisions generally, he has assurance from God. For whenever we entreat Him, we say, “Your will be done.” God’s will is always what benefits the soul and body of the human person. Therefore, God cannot desire anything contrary to the good of the human soul, and so a person has security. He feels secure and should always make everything depend upon God. Among other things, James writes in his epistle about people who say that they will do this or that, travel to another city for a year or two, make money, return, build something else, and so on.

They do not say, he tells us, “God willing,” or, “If God wills.” They arrange everything by themselves, and then we make shipwreck of all these plans, with tears, mourning clothes, and a thousand other sorrows. If God wills! This is why God must always come first, always be set before us, always be present from morning until evening. One evening, when we were speaking about another subject, I told you that every morning, when Saint Kosmas the Aetolian rose to continue his ministry, he would turn toward the East and say, “My Christ, go before me again today.” That was all. He asked Christ to go before him that day. But we do not remember Christ. We make some semblance of the sign of the Cross, some caricature of it, merely so that He will protect us from being struck by a car or suffering some other harm. Those are the kinds of things we ask for.

Do we believe in Him completely? Do we feel that we need and desire His counsel? As far as we are concerned, He can keep His counsel to Himself. An elderly woman once said, “My daughter says, ‘Let her give us her blessing and keep her advice to herself.’” That is what we say as well. We want Christ’s blessing to protect the child, so that the child is not hurt, does not bleed, causes no trouble, and suffers nothing, and so forth. Beyond that, however, Christ has no place in our home. Is He going to tell us what to eat at midday? Is He going to tell us whether to have children, whether I may steal or lie, what I should wear, whether I should become a man or a woman? “That is my business, not His. God does not concern Himself with such matters.” This is where things are headed. We must consider these matters very seriously, because we do not want to examine our lives. If we do examine our lives, we shall face God’s justice even now. Although it does not yet act

in its fullness, even now God lets chastisements rain upon us and helps us return to the right path, yet we refuse. I say, then, that prayer is something all people—even the greatest among them—have felt the need to offer, so that they might be united with God. Whatever you read, you will find prayer at its heart. It is also good for prayer to have an intercessor. Our Church has our Most Holy Theotokos. The Church hardly says anything without immediately adding, “through the intercessions of the immaculate Theotokos,” or, “our most blessed Lady,” and so forth. Five words are spoken, and then, “through the intercessions of the immaculate Theotokos.” Another five words, and again, “through the intercessions of the immaculate Theotokos.” But we disdain the Theotokos. We do not want her to go before us, to intercede and hold an umbrella over us so that we may stand beneath it. That umbrella holds back the justice of God. For the justice of God,

if it acted against us every time we sinned—while our tongues rattle like typewriters, accusing others from morning until evening; while our eyes seek out everything corrupt and immoral; while our ears do the same, and so forth—we would be lost. “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” Who could stand before You if You demanded strict justice from each one of us?

God is longsuffering and gives us this entire opportunity. With these words, then, I would like to draw your attention to the matter of prayer. We lose many things because we do not pray, because we pray carelessly, or because we do not pray as we ought. You may say to me, “But I do pray.” What do you pray for? What do you pray for? You pray that your little grandchild will pass an examination—and is that what you call prayer?

You say you pray? Tell me, what does your prayer consist of? That your daughter may have a safe journey to America? That an operation may succeed? What exactly do you pray for? Prayer must be spiritual. Open the texts of the Church, and you will find a thousand petitions. Nine hundred and ninety-nine are spiritual, and one concerns material needs: “An angel of peace, a faithful guide and guardian; that the whole day may be perfect, holy, and peaceful; that the end of our life may be Christian”—and so on. Everything is spiritual. Then, in one place, there is also the petition “for seasonable weather and an abundance of the fruits of the earth”—for a piece of bread, we might say. Nine hundred and ninety-nine are spiritual. Open the texts and see. We say that we believe and that we go to church

on Sundays. We have icons in our icon corners, we burn incense, and we talk about having Christian identity cards. But open the texts, and you will find material needs mentioned only in the one instance I have just given you. This shows that our own prayers are not spiritual at all—not at all. You may tell me, “You are being absolute.” It is true: on this point, I am absolute. There are, of course, a few souls who understand the distinction and truly pray. They bring before God a child who has gone astray, a daughter who has fallen into an immoral life, a husband or wife, a father, grandfather, grandmother, brothers, or other relatives, and they pray rightly. They ask for their return. They ask for God’s forbearance, and that He may speak good things into the hearts of those who have gone astray.

But these are very few. As I said in church this morning, the proof is that we do not bring a commemoration slip with their names and an offering for these people who have gone astray, these living dead. We do not bring them to the Church so that, even indirectly, their souls may be placed in the Holy Chalice and they may be benefited. Satan fears even this indirect prayer, because it gives Christ occasion to say to him, “Stand aside, because that person is pleading with Me.” For Satan goes and makes his claim before Christ: “You are unjust. This person belongs to me. As You know, he does this, that, and the other. He is mine.” But when Christ has our prayers beside Him, He says,

“He does these things, but this person is asking Me not to act against him, and I will not.” In this way, we give our Christ the opportunity to show still more forbearance toward that man or woman, in the hope that they may come to metanoia, to repentance, and return. All this is the work of prayer. These things are resolved only through prayer. And Christ waits for them. Does He not already know them? Of course He does. But He waits for them from me. He asks for man’s humility, and the more a person struggles in this, the more he will be benefited and edified. The Book of Job is a beautiful book that everyone should read—not merely because of Job’s sufferings, but because of all the teaching it contains. In...

chapter 8, verse 5, it says: “Rise early and make supplication to the Lord Almighty.” We say that we should go outside and give oxygen to the body. That is good and blessed, but who will give oxygen to the soul? “Rise early and make supplication to the Lord Almighty.” Let the morning find you with your hands raised; let the dawn find you with your hands lifted toward the Almighty. “If you are pure and true,” then “He will now hear your supplication.” But only if you are pure and true. We, however, are both impure and false, because our life is not Christian. It bears the name Christian, but it is not Christian in reality.

It has the title, but not the essence. Examine your life according to Christ’s scales and Christ’s measuring rod—not according to your friend, your companion, or the world. The world readily issues certificates of admission to the Kingdom of Heaven: “You must be given a place in the central square of Paradise, while Christ has prepared a special place in Hell for me!” So I say that prayer is indispensable. If you do not pray properly, at least make a beginning. Some people say, “I would like to learn about prayer, but I do not know what to pray.” It is not a matter of cleverness, as though you could outwit God. No. Even if, in your confusion, you say to Him, “Lord, do not have mercy on me,” or, “Lord, do not receive me and do not have mercy on me,” the Lord will grant what is in your

heart, not what your words literally say. There are many beautiful and well-crafted words that move us, but they do not move Christ. Christ is moved by the human heart and by a person’s purity. “A broken and humbled heart God will not despise.” These are the hearts He desires. “My God, You granted me another dawn today, though I have already arranged appointments ten days in advance without saying, ‘If God wills, we shall meet then.’ You granted me the grace to open my eyes.” Many people imagine that they woke up because they set an alarm clock. Four hundred alarm clocks could ring, even if you put them inside a cooking pot to make the whole place shake, and still you might not awaken. For you to awaken, He must will it.

Our bed did not become our deathbed because He willed otherwise. So when you rise in the morning, say, “My Christ, You granted me the grace to behold Your majesty once again and to face new responsibilities today. I beg You, shelter me and guide me.” At once, thank God for adding another day to your life—not merely so that you may do good, but so that you may repent. What moves God is metanoia, repentance, not mere human goodness. Many people perform acts of goodness. They will take the bread from their own mouths and give it to another, yet they blaspheme Christ. They reject Christ, His Mother, and His way of life. They would not step on an ant, yet they trample Christ underfoot. They want neither His Church nor His Gospel, and the clergy irritate them. God’s judgment belongs to another order and follows another measure.

God’s justice is a measuring rod that will astonish us beyond the grave. It will astonish us, for one of the Fathers says: “Three surprises await us beyond the grave. Some people whom we expected to find in the central square of Paradise will not be there; instead, a special place in Hell will have been prepared for them. And some whom we ourselves regarded as utterly corrupt will be found within Paradise.” Those are the first two surprises, the first two perplexities. The third, he says, is this: “If we ourselves are ever saved, we will wonder how we were saved,” because it truly is an extraordinary achievement. It is by God’s mercy that a person passes through that narrow gate into the Kingdom of Heaven. It is not by our cleverness or our own righteousness. It is by His mercy, and that is why I say this.

The assurances and certificates we issue have no validity. Prayer can even change God’s decree. God may issue a command, sign it, and seal it, and then revoke it. I do not know whether you read the Old Testament. Once He sent the Prophet Isaiah to a king named Hezekiah. Hezekiah lay sick in bed, and God said to Isaiah, “Go and tell him: Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die.” Isaiah departed. Hezekiah then turned his face to the wall and prayed. He wept and asked to be given more time. And while Isaiah was still on his way, he received word:

“Go back and tell him that I am adding fifteen years to his life.” And God added another fifteen years because Hezekiah prayed and asked Him to revoke His signature—and God revoked it. God allows Himself to be overcome. His omnipotence allows itself to be overcome by His love, and He condescends to man. As for the command, “Set your house in order,” some people who leave unfinished affairs behind should take it to heart, because woe to them when they depart this life. They could have settled their affairs, divided things properly, and made a will, so that their heirs would not end up tearing one another’s hair out. Then the blasphemies and court battles would not begin, because woe to those responsible: they will be trampled there. Woe to them. This is what “set your house in order” means. But we are afraid: if we make a will, what will happen? We will die!

As though we will not die if we do not make a will! These too are works of Satan. If a person would only open Holy Scripture from time to time, he could learn exactly how he ought to conduct himself. I do not know whether you have ever paid attention to Moses, whom we spoke about the other day, and how many times his prayer changed the course of events. How many times did he shut the heavens? How many miracles did this man of prayer perform? Through prayer, he was mighty. What are hydrogen bombs, atomic bombs, and the like? They are trifles. The faithful person will say, “Lord Jesus Christ, help me,” and the bomb will fall and lie there without exploding. It will fail to ignite.

There is no greater atom than the human person—but I mean the person united with Christ, not the spiritually dead person: the person united with Christ. Put a plug into the socket and then touch the live wire. Will it not seize you? Why is it so powerful, and why does it burn you? Because it is connected to the current. That is what the faithful person is like when he is united with Christ. He is mighty, he works miracles, and all his difficulties are resolved.

He is not troubled by whether he dies now or in a million years. Nothing terrifies him. Neither war, nor cancer, nor a bullet terrifies him. Will a jet frighten him? Can anyone frighten him? He is in danger from no one. A person is endangered only by sin, only by his own self. No one can harm a person except that person himself. John Chrysostom expressed this beautifully and concisely while living in exile at Cucusus in Armenia. The bishops wrote to him from here: “Revered Father, they have treated you unjustly. Revered Father, they have done this and that to you; they have distressed and harmed you.” “Yes,” he replied, “I acknowledge it.” But from exile he wrote back: “No one can harm John unless John harms himself.” No one can injure me or do me evil if I do not harm myself—if I do not sin.

There are no other true evils. They are only things that appear to be evil. There is only one evil, and its name is sin. That alone is evil. Everything else merely appears evil. Where is death? The body will dissolve and then rise again. It is foolish to argue over whether I remained here ten days longer or departed ten days earlier. But when a person prays and is illumined by the grace of the Holy Spirit, all these matters are resolved within his nous, his spiritual intellect. There are no riddles, no darkness, no hidden chambers in the soul, and no fears. Everything is resolved. If you wish, read the passage where our Christ prayed at the Transfiguration. See what happened there.

His whole being shone. He shone while He was praying. Those of you who have heard the story of Saint Nektarios of Aegina know that, when he returned from Alexandria under persecution, he disembarked at Chalcis. Following a revelation, a man from Chalcis went to meet him and hosted him in his home for a time. One evening, the man’s young son ran to his father, crying, “Father, there is a fire in Grandfather’s room!” He ran to him, saying that something was ablaze, that there was a fire. He opened the door and saw Saint Nektarios kneeling in prayer, surrounded by fire, his whole being aflame.

The bush that burns yet is not consumed is present even today—but during prayer. When a person prays, Christ stands over him and listens, while the angels receive the prayers and carry them upward. This particular ministry belongs to the order of the Archangel Raphael. If you wish, read the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament. See what Raphael says to Tobit: “I took your prayers and carried them to God, and God sent me to take your son and lead him to recover the money, so that you, who were ill, would not die.” Yet these things are foreign to Christians today. We entertain ourselves instead: one person has the radio on and listens, while another keeps an ear turned outside to hear what the neighbor is saying.

Unless a person becomes detached from earthly things and finds a distinct way of lifting himself toward Heaven, how can he reflect divine grace? Look at the way homes are built today. What do they not contain? What provision do they not make? They have absolutely everything—except an icon corner. Out of a thousand buildings, perhaps five have an icon corner and a special place for prayer. There is room for everything, even for the dogs, but no place where a person may close the door, kneel, and lift his hands upward. That is why these homes are desolate, and before long owls and ravens will be crying within them.

Christ has departed from the home. He went out, and everything else came in. I will not list all the devilish things in the house or how much space each one occupies, while there is not even a small place for prayer. In your tribulations, troubles, and problems, draw the curtain, lift your hands upward, take hold of God, and bring Heaven down. Your problems will be resolved, you will be comforted, you will stop taking tranquilizers, and you will lie down and sleep the sleep of the righteous. We have reached this condition because prayer has departed. I do not mean formal prayer; there is plenty of formal prayer. I mean true and essential prayer—the prayer that truly helps a person

to be united with God and become one with Him. When a person is united with God through prayer, everything changes. Somewhere in the Gospel Law—specifically in Matthew—we find this written, and you will remember it as well. The Gospel Law is contained in three chapters of Matthew: chapters 5, 6, and 7. Since the thought has come to me, let me say this: even if you read nothing else from the Gospel or the Old Testament because you have no time, you must read these three chapters—5, 6, and 7. A person should read these three chapters and put them into practice.

He will already be in the Omonia Square of Paradise, right from the outset, and all he will need is one small event that takes place at the throat.

The shell called the body must break, so that the shell remains below and the little bird flies upward. That small event is called death. Everything else is trivial. So if a person reads chapters five, six, and seven—five, six, and seven—he will learn everything there. For there Christ tells us: “Ask, and it will be given to you.” Ask; I am waiting. “Seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds. He who does not ask does not receive, and he who does not seek does not find.” So it is in my hands to ask.

Suppose you have to submit a petition. You sit and think about how to compose a request concerning some worldly matter. You try to find the finest words, so that the request will be justified and, at the same time, will contain words capable of moving the department or the person to whom it is addressed, so that you may obtain what you seek. These same elements are necessary when we approach Christ—not because He needs them, but because we do. The way we approach Him reveals our inner state, and then we shall receive. If the petition is not properly made, it will be returned. That is why James says, as I told you earlier: “You ask and do not receive.” Why? “Because you ask wrongly.”

There are people who ask the Most Holy Theotokos, at the Gorgoepikoos shrine, to help them get Nikaris out of prison. Is that a proper request? Is that something to ask for? One woman asks that a married couple be separated so that she can take the husband, or a man asks to take another man’s wife.

What the Most Holy Theotokos hears in the Paraklesis services! If you knew, you would shudder. People ask for the strangest things. Can such requests possibly receive an answer? No, they cannot. You must ask rightly. “Knock, and it will be opened to you.” When you go and knock at a door and no one opens, do you simply turn around and leave? The person may not be at home, and yet you persist.

Sometimes you even see a light inside. Someone must be in there—though perhaps they left the light on and went out. Still you call again, ask the neighbors, perhaps even throw a stone at the roof, if it is made of tin, or whatever else you can do. You go to all that trouble to find out who is inside and to make contact, do you not? Then why do you not do the same with Christ when He does not open to you? Christ is always within. He is never absent. Never. Only Saint Nicholas was once absent, because he is a Saint. A Saint exists within place and time. Christ is present everywhere. Yet Christ, having received the petition, notified Saint Nicholas. “Run,” He told him. “They are killing men in the prison; they are going to execute them in the morning.” So He sent him to the prison, and Saint Nicholas delivered the men. Read the Life of Saint Nicholas. Christ is always within. If He does not open, He has His reason.

Perhaps He should not grant your request at this particular moment. Do not give up. Say to Him: “In any event, I shall keep knocking. If You judge that what I ask is for my good, then grant it. You will do whatever You know is best. Give me patient endurance as I wait.” As you know, we often ask wrongly. We face a temptation, an illness, poverty, lack of work, and so many other problems today. Do not ask Christ to take this cross away from you. You will gain far more if you say in your prayer: “My Christ, do not take this cross away from me, since You have given it to me—if indeed You gave it to me, for I may have made it for myself. Do not take it away; only give me the strength to bear it. Give me the strength to carry it.”

In tribulation, pain, illness, abandonment, earthquake, wrath, famine—in all these things—the soul finds benefit. When everything is going well, all is slack. For water to rise, it must be placed under pressure. Without pressure it cannot rise. It remains weak and spills downward, flooding streets and basements. But under pressure it can pierce a wall. In precisely the same way, the events of life must press a person into prayer. And you know that our most fervent and finest prayers are offered in our difficult circumstances—our blessed circumstances—when our money fails us, when medical science fails us...

When our strength fails us, then prayer begins to act, and then the power of God is revealed. “Keep knocking,” He says. “Keep knocking.” One evening a man was hurrying toward the outskirts of the city, and someone asked him, “Where are you going, Varmaniko? Where are you going?” “I am going to break down God’s door.” There was a little chapel outside the city. He would go there, light the oil lamps, and say his prayers. At that time he had a very grave problem. Medical science had given up on his wife, and if he relied on medicine alone, she would be dead within two days. Her illness was incurable. He had prayed many times, but that afternoon he had received no answer. “I am going,” he said, “to break down the door—to break down God’s door.”

He knew that God was within. “You will answer me. What if You do not open?” Such things are powerful. I remember when penicillin first appeared in London. There was an elderly shipowner, a man of faith, who prayed to Christ and said: “Please, let me depart first. Do not let Kalliope go before me. Kalliope, you will remain behind. I shall die first; you will hold my memorial services, and afterward you will die. I have already discussed it with Christ.” And within himself he had the consolation that events would unfold just as he had asked Christ in prayer. But then Kalliope fell ill with severe bronchopneumonia, with fluid in her lungs. The doctors gave up on her. “Nothing can be done. Mrs. Diamanti will not live to see the morning.”

Then the nurse, who had been instructed to... administered a dose of penicillin—I do not know how much—but made a mistake and gave her three times the prescribed amount. The old woman rose from her bed in the morning. In the eyes of the world, it was the nurse’s mistake that raised her up and kept her alive. Diamantis died first, and she held his memorial services—the fortieth day, the third month, and the sixth month—and then she too died. What does anything cost God? Is God a politician? Have members of parliament deceived Him and obtained His signature for their case? God is almighty. But who entrusts himself to Him? Who speaks such words to Him and discusses matters with Him? Who takes hold of His feet and says, “I will not let You go”? Have you ever read in Genesis about the prayer Jacob offered when he was returning home?

He saw and learned that Esau was coming against him with more than three hundred men. What did he do that night? Scripture says that he sent his family—about fifty people altogether—across the river, while he remained on the other side. All night long, it says, he wrestled with a man and held fast to him. That man was none other than Christ. At daybreak the man said to him, “Let me go, for the day has dawned.” Jacob answered, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.” He held Him fast through prayer. He kept God there. Since Jacob would not release Him, that man—that is, God—touched the joint of his thigh and put it out of place, so that the pain might make him let go. “Even so, I will not let You go,” Jacob said.

The man asked him, “What is your name? What are you called?” He answered, “Jacob.” Jacob means deceiver or supplanter. Do you remember what he had done with his mother, Rebecca, when she dressed him in goatskins and he stole Esau’s birthright? That was why Esau was now waiting to make him pay. So the man asked, “What is your name?” He answered, “Jacob,” which, as I repeat, means deceiver or supplanter. “From now on,” He told him, “you shall be called Israel.” From this name come the Israelites, our friends. Israel means one who is strengthened by God, one who is powerful with God. That is the meaning of Israel. Only then did Jacob release Him. And when day dawned, Esau’s nous, his spiritual mind, was changed.

Instead of killing Jacob, Esau ran to him, embraced him, and began to kiss him. You should also know that this injury to Jacob’s leg became the reason the Jews do not eat the sinew of the thigh. If you go to a Jewish market, you can buy that part, because the Jews do not eat it. God had twisted the thigh of their father, the Patriarch Jacob, and they regard it, in a certain sense, as accursed, so they do not eat it. Jacob prevailed with God. He said to Him: “I will not let You go unless You have mercy on me and bless me.” He received the blessing, Esau’s nous was changed, and everything became different. If we were to search for other such examples, you would be astonished.

Shall I take you to the night of Great and Holy Thursday? Name one action, one gesture, one undertaking of Christ that was not preceded by at least one all-night vigil. He went out to choose His disciples. He kept vigil throughout the night, and in the morning He went out and chose them. Who did this? God. Who? God. Yet you make deals, divide property, buy shares, form partnerships, take a wife from the street, or take a husband from who knows where, as though there were no one to ask. Naturally, you suffer shipwreck. When even God undertakes something that marks a crossroads in life, it is surrounded by prayer.

And then you, a human being, stand at the threshold of Holy Matrimony. Is there any greater crossroads in a person’s life than this? Where are you going, and what are you committing yourself to? A man must ask God for his wife, and a woman must ask God for her husband. This is what Scripture says: “House and possessions are divided by fathers among their children.” You inherit fields and vineyards from your father and mother. “But a wife is joined to a man by the Lord.” They spend ten years in the mire, amid every kind of corruption, love affairs, and the rest. Yet ten days after they marry, they claim “incompatibility of character” and separate. During the ten years they dragged one another through all of that, they did not separate. But as soon as it became apparent that they might come under God’s blessing, suddenly there is incompatibility of character, and it is over. Why? Because God was never consulted.

He is the One who gives the rib. When you reach out on your own, you do not know whether the man you are taking is your Adam, and you may be left bewildered. Nor do you know whether the woman is your Eve, your own rib, so that harmony may exist. The Creator alone knows who belongs with whom. But we do not think this way. We form partnerships, undertake other ventures, and make journeys without first praying: “My Christ, should I do this?”

“Should I refrain? You Yourself prevent it if it is not right.” Whatever comes from His hand, I receive with thanksgiving. And do you know what John Chrysostom says? If you ask God for something and He gives it to you, offer Him one word of thanks. If He does not give it to you, offer Him a thousand words of thanks, because He has protected you from something. If He withholds it, that means some evil would have come from it.

God is protecting you. “A thousand thanks, my God, for not giving it to me; because if You do not give it, You know why.” And among all these actions of Christ, let us consider the night of Great and Holy Thursday. Have you ever read what Luke says about that night? He tells us that on the night of Great and Holy Thursday, Christ went

to the Mount of Olives, according to His custom, as Holy Scripture puts it, and fell down to pray. He withdrew from His disciples about a stone’s throw—the distance one might throw a stone, perhaps sixty meters—and there He fell down. Listen: “And He came out and went, as was His custom”—for He was accustomed to go apart to the mountain, the Mount of Olives—“and His disciples also followed Him. When He came to the place,” when they arrived there, “He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation.’” Pay attention to what was at stake. It was the night of Great and Holy Thursday. Pray that you may not enter into temptation. “And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw.”

He went a little farther, about a stone’s throw, “and knelt down and prayed.” He knelt there and prayed, saying, “Father, if You are willing”—if You will. He places it in the Father’s judgment. God places it in the Father’s judgment. And now think of us, insignificant human beings: because we consulted the notary, the lawyer, an experienced uncle, or a knowledgeable grandmother, we go ahead. My friend, ask God to tell you. All the others know nothing. “If You are willing, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” In the Our Father you said, “Your will be done.” We say it, but we say it for others, not for ourselves. “Your will be done—not My will, but Yours.” And what happened then, as He knelt there?

“Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.” In the midst of prayer, on that difficult night, at that turning point, an angel came from heaven. At that moment the angel helped Jesus in His humanity—the man Jesus, not Jesus in His divinity. Do you understand how greatly we need these things? “And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” When have we ever broken into a sweat during prayer? We weep because we have lost material possessions, as I told you. We chase after material things, carnal pleasures, and unlawful partners, and then we weep.

These are not tears of salvation. They are not tears that can enter into prayer, be taken seriously, and bring us an answer. If Christ Himself prays, then what must we do? And He Himself says: “Watch therefore, and pray always, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass.” This has eternal force. I will read it again. It is from Luke, chapter 21, verse 36. “Watch.” When we say “watch,” it means: remain outside sin, far from the gloomy sleep of sin. “Watch therefore, and pray always.” Prayer should always be on your lips. “That you may be counted worthy to escape”—so that you may be delivered from

“all these things that will come to pass.” If you wish to avoid all the terrible things that are going to happen, you will avoid them through prayer. That is the only way. But unless what Job said is put into practice—that a person must be pure when praying—nothing will happen. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the brother of Basil the Great, says: “That voice is sweet-sounding”—beautiful, good, with a pleasing sound—“which rises to the hearing of God and reaches the ears of the Lord of Hosts. It is not the cry uttered with great force,” by someone shouting loudly and speaking eloquently to Him. No. “It is the thought offered up from a pure conscience.” From a pure conscience.

Make your confession, practice metanoia—repent—change your life, and pray; then you will see results unlike anything you have ever seen in your life. He also says one more thing, and with this I will finish: “Prayer made the sea creature a home for Jonah.” You heard this the other day. “It brought Hezekiah back from the gates of death to life.” You heard earlier about King Hezekiah. “And for the three young men, it turned the flame into a cool and refreshing breeze.” The Three Holy Youths in the furnace were preserved so completely that their clothes did not even smell of smoke. All this came through prayer. I pray that the Holy God may grant that we too desire to pray, seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and God will add all other things to us. May He help us.

αν ενεργήσει σε μας, ανά πάσα στιγμή που αμαρτάνομε, η γλώσσα μας πηγαίνει σαν γραφομηχανή κατηγορώντας από το πρωί μέχρι το βράδυ, τα μάτια μας δουλεύουν ό,τι διεφθαρμένο και ό,τι ανήθικο, τα αυτιά μας και ούτω καθεξής, πάμε χαμένοι. «Εάν ανομίας παρατηρήσεις, Κύριε, Κύριε, τίς υποστήσεται;» Ποιος θα σταθεί μπροστά, εάν ζητήσεις δικαιοσύνη να κάνεις με τον καθένα μας;

Μακροθυμεί ο Θεός και μας δίνει όλη αυτή την ευκαιρία. Θα ήθελα, λοιπόν, με τα λόγια μου αυτά να σας επιστήσω την προσοχή στο θέμα της προσευχής. Χάνουμε πολλά που δεν προσευχόμεθα ή που προσευχόμεθα πλημμελώς, που δεν προσευχόμεθα όπως πρέπει να προσευχόμεθα. Θα μου πείτε «Μα εγώ προσεύχομαι». Τι προσεύχεσαι; Τι προσεύχεσαι; Προσεύχεσαι για το εγγονάκι να επιτύχει στις εξετάσεις, και αυτό λέγεται προσευχή;

Ώσπου η νοσοκόμα που της είχαν δώσει εντολή να... Ρίχνει δεν ξέρω πόση δόση πενικιλίνης, κάνει λάθος και της ρίχνει τριπλή μερίδα πενικιλίνης. Η γιαγιά σηκώθηκε το πρωί. Στον κόσμο, το λάθος της νοσοκόμας τη σήκωσε και έζησε, και πέθανε ο Διαμαντής και του έκανε τα μνημόσυνα, τα σαράντα και τα τρία μήνα και τα έξι μήνα, και πέθανε και αυτή κατόπιν. Τι του κοστίζει του Θεού; Πολιτικός είναι ο Θεός; Τον γέλασαν οι βουλευτές και έδωσαν υπογραφή στην υπόθεσή τους; Παντοδύναμος ο Θεός. Αλλά ποιος του εμπιστεύεται και ποιος του είπε λόγια τέτοια να τα συζητεί μαζί του; Τον πιάνει από τα πόδια: «Δεν σε αφήνω». Διαβάσατε ποτέ τη Γένεση, την προσευχή που έκανε ο Ιακώβ όταν γύριζε;

Αυτός πήγε παραπέρα, ως λίθου βολήν, «και θεις τα γόνατα προσηύχετο». Και γονατίζει κάτω και προσηύχετο, λέγων: «Πάτερ, ει βούλει», εάν θέλεις, το θέτει στην κρίση του Πατέρα. Ο Θεός το θέτει στην κρίση του Πατέρα. Σκεφτείτε τώρα εμείς τα ανθρωπάκια, διότι ρωτήσαμε τον συμβολαιογράφο, γιατί ρωτήσαμε τον δικηγόρο ή τον θείο που ήξερε ή τη γιαγιά που ήξερε, προχωρούμε. Ρε, ρώτα τον Θεό να σου πει. Όλοι οι άλλοι δεν ξέρουν τίποτα. «Ει βούλει, παρενεγκείν τούτο το ποτήριον απ’ εμού· πλην μη το θέλημά μου, αλλά το σον γινέσθω». Γενηθήτω το θέλημά σου, είπες στο Πάτερ ημών. Και το λέμε, αλλά το λέμε για τους άλλους, όχι για τον εαυτό μας. «Γενηθήτω το θέλημά σου, το σον γινέσθω». Και τι έγινε τότε, εκεί που ήταν γονατιστός;
