Summary
A godparent assumes a solemn responsibility before God, becoming a spiritual parent rather than merely participating in a social custom. Baptism establishes genuine spiritual kinship, which families must understand and respect when considering future marriages. Drawing on Christ’s conversation with Nicodemus, the lecture presents baptismal rebirth through water and the Spirit as the decisive birth that prepares a person for eternal life.

This evening I was going to speak about a subject that Christians need to understand, though not everyone does. Yet they ought to know about it. It is the matter of becoming a godparent when someone is to be baptized—not usually an adult, of course, since such cases are difficult and rare, but most often a little boy or girl. Does the person who undertakes this Mystery realize that it is a great matter, and treat it as such?
Does he understand the responsibilities he assumes before God? And does the parent know what must be done in order to have his child baptized?
This is something that remains obscure, and since we discuss so many other things, I would not want it to be left aside, for it too plays a leading role. Every Christian has two parents, two fathers.
He has his natural father, who begot him in his mother’s womb, from which he came forth, and he also has his spiritual father, who brought him forth from the baptismal font. For a person has two mothers as well: a spiritual mother and a mother according to the flesh. Most people do not know these things. To them, Baptism is simply a social bond between families, and that is all. What actually takes place, what it means, and why it is done are treated as secondary matters, although they ought to be primary. So let us speak about all this little by little, so that it may remain with us, so that we may learn it and consider our responsibilities toward those whom we have baptized. First of all, anyone considering becoming a godparent must think carefully. He takes upon himself
sins. He receives another into his care; he assumes responsibility. He takes upon himself responsibilities that belong to someone else, and he makes a promise. The precise definition of the word “sponsor” is this: one who receives something into his care, takes it upon himself, and promises to carry it out. He is, in other words, the contractor responsible for a work. Someone undertakes a particular project, and on signs outside we read, “The contractor for this project is so-and-so.” In the Church, however, the sponsor is the godfather or godmother, the person through whom a spiritual bond between families is formed. This person assumes certain obligations before God, not before men.
It is before God that he assumes them. On that day he promises many things, yet many godparents never even think about them. They do not even know what they are being asked, what answers they are giving, or on whose behalf they are being questioned and responding. They simply give the answers they are prompted to give. But do they understand the responsibility they are assuming, and that one day they will be called to account for what they did concerning the promise they made? It is therefore a very great responsibility. To act as sponsor at someone’s wedding is not such a grave matter.
Nor is it such a grave responsibility to sponsor the Baptism of an adult who has received catechesis—to be present at the Baptism of an adult who will make the confession himself. He will be asked, “Do you renounce Satan?” and he will answer, “I renounce him.” He will be asked, “Do you unite yourself to Christ?” and he will answer, “Yes, I unite myself to Christ.” He himself will make the confession; he himself will spit upon Satan and unite himself to Christ. He himself will recite the Creed three times and make all these confessions. In that case the godparent is present largely as a formality. But we have very few such cases here now, because our custom is infant Baptism. We are Christians from early childhood, and we bear responsibility
for these little ones whom we receive from the font, because we undertake to make the confession on their behalf. This promise and responsibility do not end when the godmother or godfather places the child back into the mother’s arms. The sponsor’s duty continues beyond that. This is why I say it is a great responsibility. Sadly, those of us who invite someone to baptize our child are not careful or discerning about whom we choose. Nor do those who undertake to participate in the Mystery, make the confession, and accept the responsibility understand what they are promising, what they are taking upon themselves, or what will be required of them on the day of judgment.
It is a vicious circle, as we say. The child may be baptized, yet from the standpoint of catechesis it is as though he were unbaptized. For the godparent must one day explain to the child what he undertook to say on the child’s behalf. He must tell the boy or girl, “Do you know what I confessed for you? I confessed this, and this, and this.” What godfather or godmother has watched over a godson or goddaughter spiritually after Baptism? They are content to bring an Easter candle, to take the child to Holy Communion two or three times after Baptism—and even that out of superstition—or perhaps to bring some other gift. But spiritually, I do not know whether there is
even one sponsor in a thousand who has undertaken to form and instruct the person received from the baptismal font. It is a great responsibility, and remember this: one day God will call to account all of you who have baptized someone, if you have not done what you ought to have done, regardless of where your godson or goddaughter may be. For my part, I do my duty. After that, each person is responsible and free either to accept or reject what I say. The parent is also responsible, because he does not take care to find a spiritual person to become the child’s spiritual father, but instead chooses...
someone, I suppose, with material benefits in mind. And you know that in the villages it is mostly politicians who baptize the children. I know someone who worked closely with a member of parliament, and I do not know how many children he baptized on that politician’s behalf. You can imagine that each Baptism brought one, two, or three votes, depending on how many people belonged to the household joined to him through the sponsorship. But there was nothing beyond that—perhaps a lamb, a kid, or a roasted goat. That was all: a feast, and the boast that “so-and-so baptized the child.” But afterward, what becomes of the child? Where is he? Is he alive or dead? Has anyone told him anything about God?
Has anyone spoken to him about what his godfather said on his behalf on the day of his Baptism? Nothing. They often do not even remember where they served as godparents. Others have baptized both boys and girls who may later have married one another, with grievous consequences.
Look at what comes from such relationships, because this is a matter of spiritual kinship. Look at the consequences and at the children who are born. Your heart will weep. I encountered such a case in Nenita on Chios. I had corresponded with a man whom, of course, I did not know personally. He wrote to me that he was paralyzed
from the waist down, though I did not know the cause. Once, when I happened to be there, I went to find him. I went outside the town and found him inside a tunnel. He was sitting on a large wooden bed frame. From the waist up he was a strong man, but from the waist down he was paralyzed. I asked whether he was there alone. “No,” he told me, “my brother Giorgis is here too.” “And where is he?” I asked. “Farther inside,” he said. There was another tunnel beyond that one. I went to see him and found a man shaped like a frog, extremely short, with legs like a frog’s. I also found their mother, withered like a decaying mushroom
from old age, suffering, and all the rest. I asked whether there was another brother, and they told me that another brother was in the Home for the Incurably Ill in Athens. At that time—this happened fifteen years ago—he was twenty-three years old. The whole family was devastated. For what reason, and why? No one managed to give me a proper answer. So indirectly I tried to draw the truth out and discover the cause. “Were the husband and wife perhaps related—cousins or something of that sort?” An elderly woman from Chios
who served in the house where I was staying knew the story. I asked her discreetly, “What do you know about that household?” “Ah, Mr. Mitsos,” she said, “we told her at the time not to marry him, because the same godfather had baptized them both, but she refused to listen. And these are the consequences.”
This is not the only case. I know of three such cases. Many people think nothing of it and pay no attention at all. They repeatedly baptize both boys and girls without any discernment. The husband baptizes some and the wife baptizes others, as though husband and wife were two separate persons.
Husband and wife are one person. Even though they are two persons, they are one flesh, and it is as though the same person had baptized all those children. They are committing a grave offense—a grave offense. This is why the matter is so serious. In the early Church, those who had served as wedding sponsors would also serve as sponsors at the couple’s children’s Baptisms, because they knew the family relationships intimately and could warn them, “Take care that these children do not marry one another.” The parents themselves would even baptize their children so that, just as siblings according to the flesh cannot marry, those related spiritually would also be prevented from marrying. That is how serious the matter is. Today, of course, as you understand, everything has become lax, and this too has been weakened.
There are countless illnesses whose causes doctors still cannot discover. If their roots were traced back, or if the Lord were asked in prayer to reveal the cause, many would be attributed to violations of this spiritual kinship. Baptism is the first and most serious Mystery, the Mystery that establishes a person in Christianity. No one can become a Christian without beginning with Baptism. It is the greatest Mystery; everything begins there. The old man dies; the old man is buried and renounced, and the new man is put on. As we have said, it is the Mystery of Mysteries. A man blackened by sin enters the spiritual womb
and a new man comes forth. From then on, this new man must be cared for and watched over through the other Mysteries: through metanoia and Holy Confession, and through Holy Communion. Yet this Mystery has been reduced to a worldly social event. Baptism was never celebrated in the afternoon, never at night, and never at midday. Baptisms were always celebrated in the morning, especially for catechumens and others preparing to enter the Church. They took place on the feast of Theophany, on Great and Holy Saturday, and on similar occasions. The people remained there in the morning and received Holy Communion. Then they departed and accompanied the newly baptized home together with the other Christians, carrying lit candles and singing joyful
With joyful hymns, they escorted them home. For the purpose of Baptism is to make a person receptive to sanctification. As soon as someone is baptized, he must receive Holy Communion immediately. Even with the irregular practice we have now, when a Baptism takes place in the afternoon and so forth, the priest should open the tabernacle and take out the Holy Gifts reserved there since Great Thursday for emergencies in the churches, and give Holy Communion to the newly illumined. That is why he was baptized. He was baptized, the old man departed, Satan was cast out, and Christ enters. Why do you send the child away from the Church without Christ? You have cleansed the room so that you may bring the King into it.
You have driven out the goat-footed devil; why do you not bring Christ in before the child goes home? But these things are not done because people do not know. I do not want to say that it is through indifference. They are not done because of ignorance. This is the purpose. The father, then—the child’s spiritual father—must be a spiritual person. But what do we look at? Who he is, whether he is handsome, whether he has money, whether he holds an important position. These things are all well and good if they are present. But if there is no beauty in his soul, no beauty in his inner, spiritual life, then outward qualities are unnecessary and do not help the person at all. For baptizing someone and then leaving him to himself is like grafting a tree and never pruning it or caring for it afterward.
The other branches will choke it, and the graft will be lost. It needs care afterward. The responsibility expressed in the words, “I renounce you, Satan,” and “I unite myself to You, Christ,” and in the renunciation of Satan’s pomp and worship and all the rest—this responsibility must be passed on to the one who has been illumined, the newly baptized. That is why there must be an understanding beforehand with those who are to become spiritual relatives. “I will baptize your child, but will you permit me to pass on to the child what I am about to profess?” There is a beautiful saying among the people. The godmother says, “I return your child to you baptized, anointed with chrism, and entrusted to God. Guard the child from fire and precipice until the age of twelve.”
After that, you will let me have a part as well. Until then the child is yours and remains in your care, but from that point onward I too must take part. You must allow me to come and say a few words to the child—the things I myself promised on the child’s behalf. I made a profession before Christ, and I am obliged to tell the child about it. I do not know whether you will tell the child, but I too have the duty to say, “My child, this is how things are.” Many people will tell us from the outset, “We do not accept that. I did not intend to make my child a Christian or a saint.” This happened to me personally, and I speak from my own experience. Some relatives once asked me to baptize their little girl. I said that I had never baptized anyone and wanted to avoid doing so. “But if you insist, will you allow me, when the child grows up, to tell her what I will profess at her Baptism?”
And the mother—the elder mother, that is, the grandmother—said, “We do not intend our child to become a little Panagia,” meaning a little Most Holy Theotokos, you understand. I do not know what you intend her to become. If you intend her to be a ballerina, then go your way, but I will not undertake this responsibility. That was the end of it. These understandings must be reached beforehand. It is not simply a matter of establishing a social bond. It is not about what the godmother will carry, whether she is beautiful, or whether sinful motives lie behind the choice of godmother or godfather—for such things happen as well. This great Mystery sometimes conceals adultery and fornication. These are indeed things that make one’s hair stand on end, but what I am telling you is true.
We must be very careful, because it is impossible for anyone to escape God. We may escape the notice of every human being, but we will never escape God. Only metanoia—sincere repentance—will save us, so that we may offer as an excuse that we were ignorant: “We knew nothing of what we have now heard. But now that I have heard it, I turn around. I acknowledge my responsibility and my error, and I ask for mercy. I ask You to find a way to forgive my fault and whatever may have happened because of me.” For many people do not even know their godfather or godmother. They have never met them. This happened to me personally when I was getting married.
My godmother complained because she had not been invited to crown me in Holy Matrimony. Yet she had never once come to find me. I did not even know who my godmother was. She should have found me and said, “You know, my child, I baptized you,” so that I would know she was my godmother. But now, because she would have received the honor of crowning me afterward,
I had invited another friend of mine. We had served together in Albania and had agreed there that if I ever returned—if we returned to our homeland and I married—he would crown me. Keeping the promise we had made as soldiers in Albania, when the time came for me to marry, I invited him to crown me. My godmother was offended, however, and voiced her complaint. Yes, you have a complaint—but should you direct it against me or against yourself?
I was thirty years old and had served as a soldier three times. Did you ever come and tell me, “I baptized you”? Did you ever tell me anything at all? How was I supposed to know you? And now you expect me to come looking for you and say, “Come and crown me, godmother”? These things are absurd, yet they happen just as I am telling you. Many people do not even know who raised them from the baptismal font, who assumed responsibility for them before God—before God. So if there are people among us who, for one reason or another, became godparents and spiritual relatives merely for social reasons, they must take heed. If they have not guided the children they baptized, they should make an effort to guide them, even now, if they are still alive. If they live far away, write to them: “You know, my child, this is what took place between us.”
“I assumed a responsibility toward you. Until now I did not understand my obligations to you, but today God allowed me to learn them. So I tell you: take heed. I do not know what kind of life you are living. I do not even know whether you believe.” You may find that your godchildren have become opponents of Christ. You may find that girls you baptized have become prostitutes or adulteresses. You may find that they have become Jehovah’s Witnesses. I do not know what you may encounter, and you yourselves may bear some measure of responsibility for it. You will answer for that share; you will not escape the law of God. God is true, His laws are at work, and the moment will come when Christ asks you to give an account of what you did. Ignorance is no excuse before Christ. Do not listen when people say, “I did not know.” They should have gone and learned. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
Even in the world, you cannot escape responsibility by pleading ignorance of the law. Can you go before the judge and say, “I did not know”? You are obliged to learn. You are a responsible citizen and are required to know the laws of the state. Yet here you do not know the responsibilities you assume? You come here and recite a whole field’s worth of “I renounce,” and afterward tell me that you do not know? How can you not know? How do you know everything else but not this? So take heed. Perhaps it is not by chance that I am telling you these things. Of course, perhaps my words are falling on empty ground, and those of you who are present and listening may never have placed your hand in a baptismal font, never anointed anyone with oil, as we say, never made this profession, and never assumed responsibility for anyone. I hope that you will do so. But many people think that if what I am saying is observed,
will anyone be found to baptize? Will anyone be found to baptize in the way people do today? Better that no one be found, and that the father himself or the mother herself baptize the child and assume the responsibility, instead of saying, “The responsibility is yours, not mine.” Let these outside arrangements cease—godparent relationships based on transactions, fleshly motives, self-interest, and so forth—and let Baptism remain simply a Mystery. Let the father or mother baptize the child and assume the responsibility. There is no need for an outside godparent, nor for expenses or anything else. Let the mother go to the Church one afternoon or morning, whenever and wherever it may be, have her child baptized, and serve as the godmother herself. That resolves the matter. The child becomes a Christian, and no responsibility is shifted elsewhere. I do not know whether you have heard these things before.
The responsibility of someone who undertakes to receive another person from the baptismal font is great. A human being has three births. The first is birth from one’s father and mother. The second is birth from the baptismal font. The third is when one leaves the body in death, emerging once again from a prison and passing into the life to come. It is the second birth, the so-called rebirth, that gives the third birth its true purpose. That is why all the importance lies there. Mere physical birth is something a cat does, a dog does, and a mouse does.
A rabbit gives birth; all animals give birth. But for a human being merely to give birth is not enough. It is the second birth, rebirth, that gives true meaning to both the first and the third. Do you remember the conversation our Christ had with that noble man Nicodemus, when he went secretly at night to visit Christ, as we read in the third chapter of John? He was one of the prominent members of what we might call the Jewish parliament of that time. He respected Christ and understood that Christ was no ordinary person but someone new. He broke through the bonds restraining him and secretly went to see Him. Of course, he staked his career and his whole standing on the outcome,
because if they had discovered it, they would have expelled him from the synagogue, cast him out, and he would have lost everything. That was a great sacrifice. Yet our Christ did not stop to praise him for it. He confronted him directly. He said, “What you have done is good and blessed, but it does not save you. Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, unless he is born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of Heaven.” The fact that you came here and placed yourself in danger does not mean that you have now become My friend and are saved. None of that is enough. You must be born from above. Nicodemus understood this in a human, fleshly, natural sense. “How can I,” he said, “being an old man, enter my mother’s womb again and be born?”
“I am not speaking about entering your mother’s womb again. That is not what I mean. Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit...” You will not enter your mother’s womb to be born. You will enter another womb: the water of the baptismal font. It too is a womb. That is why the divine John Chrysostom says, “We underwent the same birth pangs.” In other words, we were born through the same labor pains. But I had one womb, these people another, and that person another. Yes, but the baptismal font is the same, because it belongs to the same Church. The baptismal font is what makes us brothers and sisters in Christ. The baptismal font is what makes us brothers and sisters. We have many mothers according to the flesh, but all Christians have one spiritual mother: the baptismal font.
At the baptismal font we are kin, because we were born from one font. This rebirth, then, is what gives the first birth its true purpose. And later, when you leave the shell behind and pass into the other life, because of this second birth—this rebirth—you will have attained completely what you were meant to attain and what you came into the world to attain. A human being came into the world for no other reason. The things we build here and call civilization, progress, or whatever else—these are broken pieces of pottery, like the things little children arrange when playing house, only to knock them down, kick them aside, and leave when the game is over.
That is what we build while claiming that we have accomplished something. It is absurd. This is not the purpose of the human person. Man did not come here to build such things, to play house, piling concrete and bricks one upon another and imagining that he is building civilization and creating progress. Each person comes here for the sake of his immortal soul. What matters is how he will depart from this world. That is the issue—not what he built in this world. Whatever you may have built here does not count. Does any of it count for Onassis now? For Callas? For Rockefeller? For Livanos? For the Kaiser? For Roosevelt? For Stalin? Whom else would you like me to name? It counts for nothing. They all left it behind and departed. They took nothing with them; they even left their filth behind here.
A person must reflect deeply on this. It is this second birth, the so-called rebirth, that gives true meaning to both the first and the third. If we do not succeed in this, everything is in vain. If we fail in this—this is where we must succeed. We must entrust ourselves to upright people. For example, today I place my godmother first of all on my list of names for commemoration, even before my father. First I write Helen, and then Athanasios. She is my spiritual parent, and after her comes my father. She is my mother first, and then further down comes my own mother, my mother according to the flesh.
My godmother gave me spiritual rebirth; my natural mother gave me bodily birth. My natural mother gives birth to me and may send me to Hell, while my godmother gives me rebirth and sends me toward Paradise. As greatly as the body differs from the spirit, so greatly does a spiritual parent differ from a parent according to the flesh. Yet we are not discerning enough to choose a spiritual person for our child—someone who will pray, truly pray. This is a great matter: to know that there is someone praying for your child. But of course, we usually try to make a relative or a godparent who can offer us worldly support,
We usually want the godparent to have some connection in government, some connection with money, or something of that kind, so that we may have someone to lean on in this world. But that is not what should matter. Who will care about the child’s soul? That is the person we should choose. There are people around us who often cannot afford the expense of baptizing our child. Then let us pay the expenses ourselves. When my son was baptized, I paid the expenses. I asked a spiritually minded young woman to baptize my child, knowing that she had no money. Her father would give her five or ten drachmas to go to church.
Was I to expect this young woman to provide the two, three, or five thousand drachmas that a baptism cost then, ten or fifteen years ago—whatever the amount was? I told her, “You will go shopping with my wife for whatever is needed to celebrate the Mystery. Whatever it costs, we will pay. You prepare your soul: say your prayers, go to Holy Confession, receive Holy Communion, and then make the profession that you must make on behalf of this soul. The burden you will assume and the profession you will make before the Lord are enough. We want nothing else.” So we paid, and she baptized the child. Just consider, I say, what our attention ought to be focused on. Thank you.
A person is always looking for how to prosper here, gain prominence here, and make an impressive appearance here: whom he has chosen as his child’s godparent and whom he can rely on. He does this because he himself is empty. He has nothing; he does not even have God. If he had God, he would count all these people as nothing—the so-called great, eminent, powerful, and well-established. He asks a man who does not even know how to make the sign of the Cross to baptize his child. He asks a man who has grown old without knowing the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, or “Holy God” to make the profession on behalf of his child. He asks a woman who lives immorally and goes about with her breasts exposed to say, “I renounce Satan,” on behalf of the child. She cannot do so; she has a whole regiment of demons upon her and must first renounce Satan herself. Yet she imagines that she can renounce him on behalf of your child or mine.
Think about these things and take them to heart. Do you understand what grave offenses we commit and what happens around us every day? There are even cases in which heterodox Christians have been invited to serve as godparents and baptize Orthodox children. Heterodox people have become spiritual sponsors. What can a heterodox person profess? How can he profess the Creed? He does not believe it. He may merely read it because our religion requires it, but does he believe it? Can God be mocked? What have we made of this poor little child? What has the child done to you, anxious parent? Why do you bring its soul under condemnation? How many grave offenses are committed from the very outset! Why do you bind the child in this way? Why? This responsibility, then, is many-sided, my beloved. It rests both on me, when I undertake this and aspire to become so-and-so’s spiritual sponsor,
and on the person who chooses me to be the sponsor. Both must think carefully, and both must be discerning: the one in choosing a godparent, and the other in deciding whose godparent to become. If they can work together in the fear of God, let them proceed. If not, let them not proceed; let the baptism not be arranged that way. And if other worldly motives are involved, it should not be done. Forgive me for bringing up another personal example, but it is instructive. The man who served as sponsor at our wedding also wanted to baptize our child. But because he had already baptized girls, I did not give him our child to baptize. Instead, we asked the young woman, who had never baptized either a boy or a girl, and she baptized our child.
People said, “But surely they could never marry one another.” Yet that misses the point. We seize upon the exception and say, “What if they marry?” Who told me that I will still be alive when my son is ready to marry? Who am I to presume that? Such cases do occur, because Satan knows these things. He arranges circumstances so that people who are strangers, living far apart and knowing nothing of one another, meet and come together. Only afterward is it revealed that they are related—not merely through baptismal sponsorship, but sometimes even by blood. There have even been cases of a brother and sister coming together abroad without realizing who they were, only to discover afterward that they were siblings.
You therefore have no right to dismiss it by saying, “That could never happen.” Anything can happen. I am obliged to take precautions and shut that master craftsman with the little horns and tail outside. I must give him no room; after that, let each person do as he sees fit. These are obligations laid upon us. This Mystery of Baptism is of the utmost importance. There are also other details concerning Baptism that pertain to the clergy and to what they must watch carefully. For this reason, if we are able to be discerning—even about which priest will baptize our child, though I do not wish to speak dogmatically on this point—then let us pay attention to that as well. Let us be careful about it. We know that everything plays a part.
We must have spiritual discernment. We are Christians; we have practiced our faith for years, and we know and see how each priest serves in his church, how he baptizes, how baptisms are performed at this shrine, at that place, or in a monastery. For the Lord’s sake, let us not be stingy with money when our aim is to celebrate the Mystery properly and fully. God sees that we seek what is complete, and then He will bless the Mystery. Certain things are done that ought not to be done. God, of course, provides for them through economia, but if I can avoid them, let me do so. I should not always presume upon God’s economia. As far as I can, I should handle the matter according to the Church’s exact order. This is a serious matter.
The Mystery itself is great. And what a great blessing it is to know that you have given your child a spiritual parent. Often the godfather or godmother is spiritually superior to the parents. The parents should therefore respect the godparents—when they are worthy of that respect—as their superiors and as their child’s spiritual parents. But they must choose them carefully and pray to God about it, just as many mothers pray that their daughter may be given a good husband, or their son a good wife, and God, the Most Holy Theotokos, or a Saint providentially arranges these things. The same care should be taken with this Mystery. It should not be left to chance.
People sometimes place their child before certain icons—before Saint Spyridon, the Most Holy Theotokos, or Saint Nektarios—and some random person rushes over, picks up the child, and says, “I will baptize the child because I was the one who picked it up.” But who are you? What sort of person are you, that you should become my child’s spiritual father? What does it mean to place the child there and let just anyone become its spiritual father? What do I know about you? Do you believe? Do you go to Holy Confession and receive Holy Communion? Where are you from? Will you ever see this child again? Do we live near each other? Will you be able to visit the child? If you are from America and baptize me here, how will you ever see me? Once, when I happened to be on Aegina, I went to the late Father Ieronymos and asked him to hear my confession. He said to me,
“But, Dimitri…” I asked, “Why, Geronta?” He replied, “Your doctor must live in your own neighborhood. If you fall ill, will you come all the way to Aegina? You should go to Holy Confession in Athens.” At the time I was not going to Holy Confession in Athens, but I thought that he, being a spiritual man, would tell me something more and I would be edified. Yet he would not hear my confession. You see, there are people who once baptized a child and never saw that child again. They have no idea where the child is, where he goes, what he is doing, or what has become of him. Last year, while I was abroad, there was talk in Evia about a man who had baptized a child at a fort outside Ioannina. The child would now be grown—he estimated perhaps twenty-five or thirty years old.
When he came to Greece this year, he intended to go and see him—for the first time in thirty years. Who knows how harshly that godchild may have spoken to him? What kind of spiritual kinship is that? What kind of fatherhood or role is that? If, of course, you can discern who the person is who will take the child and baptize him, that would be a blessing. If you can observe him and learn who he is—whether he is a spiritually minded person, whether he lives near you, and whether you will remain in contact—then perhaps you may consent. Otherwise, I do not approve of it. Many people have presented this custom as something good. There is also a practice here, I believe, though I do not want to state this with absolute certainty because I do not know how some of the fathers approach it: they impose a canon, a rule of prayer, on certain people who lived far from Christ for many years
and then went to Holy Confession, requiring them as their canon to baptize someone. If it were up to me, I would not do that. What is a person who until now lived far from Christ ready to do by baptizing someone? Should he not first attend to his own soul before attending to another’s? What can he do as a godparent? What can a person who knows nothing profess? Why burden him with so great a Mystery and impose such a canon upon him? If you require him to make prostrations or to give alms according to his means, I understand. If you require him to attend church, I understand. You may require other things of him. But if you require him to take part in this Mystery of Mysteries as a godparent, I do not understand it.
It is a grave sin, my beloved. Do not undertake it lightly. If you fulfill the responsibility well, it is a great blessing, because you bring a person forth as a Christian. Before God, you receive that person from the baptismal font, and your name is written beside his as the guarantor of that soul. You present yourself as guarantor. What happens here in this world when you cosign a promissory note and the other person does not pay it? You know what happens: you must pay it. Exactly the same thing happens there. You will have to fulfill the promise you made. So I do not know what has happened in your lives up to this day.
Nor do I know what those who hear this talk, which is carried to the ends of the earth, may have done in their own lives.
They should find a priest who understands these matters—not just any priest, but an experienced one—and discuss everything thoroughly with him. They should confess the mistakes they made through ignorance, so that they may set things right with Christ. Thank you. Only metanoia—repentance—and Holy Confession can set these matters right. There is no other way. And they must pray day and night: “My child, I did not understand. Wherever this child may be, Lord, shelter and bless him. I do not know what he is doing or what became of him. I have neither seen nor heard from him since then, and I never showed any concern. I hear that he is doing well in his work, but I do not know how his soul is doing. I did not make my profession for the sake of his career or his bank account.
Did I make my profession for the sake of his pleasures? I made it for his soul. Yet I do not know how his soul is doing; I showed no concern. May I not be called to account for this. I did not understand what I was doing.” It is true that we did not understand what we were doing. That is the truth. Had we understood, we would have done something; we would not have left matters as they were. In any case, farewell, and may this be a blessing, since God granted that this subject be discussed. Be careful in every case. Do not panic because of what I have told you; I have simply explained the reality of the matter. Continue to celebrate the Mysteries, but do so with wisdom, care, discernment, and preparation. Yet people who are unrepentant and have not gone to Holy Confession—any woman wandering the streets here and there, any man from the marketplace, a liar, thief, swindler, and so forth—come forward to baptize. What are they fit to do as godparents?
Will such a person make the profession and say, “I renounce Satan,” while Satan is within him? He is unrepentant, has not gone to Holy Confession, and has a legion of demons within him. What can he profess on behalf of this little child? What can he profess? What could Christ say to him? “First look to your own soul, and leave aside such grand gestures.” That is what Christ would say to him, and what ought to be said. Perhaps these words sound harsh. But from what I understand and from all I still observe, we have done nothing properly in our lives. Nothing. We go our own way. But where are we going? To our apartment? To our penthouse? Where are we going—to the Kingdom of Christ? The Kingdom of Christ has laws. The Kingdom of Christ has laws.
Whoever keeps those laws will enter. Whoever does not keep them will remain outside; it cannot be otherwise—unless, I repeat, there is metanoia, sincere repentance, in dust and ashes, as Holy Scripture says. Only then are the conditions present for a person to be saved. I thought these things also needed to be said.
Do as you judge best. Pass on whatever you think proper, and guard yourselves as carefully as you see fit. Correct whatever you can correct, if you have anything that needs correction after all that God granted us to hear this evening concerning godparents, Baptism more generally, and parents. May God be our helper.

Απόψε το βράδυ θα μιλούσα για ένα θέμα που είναι απαραίτητο στους χριστιανούς να το ξέρουν και δεν το ξέρουν όλοι. Θα έπρεπε όμως να το ξέρουν. Είναι το θέμα του αναδόχου, προκειμένου να βαφτίσουν κάποιον. Αν όχι βέβαια μεγάλους, γιατί είναι δύσκολες και σπάνιες οι περιπτώσεις αυτές, αλλά ως επί το πλείστον να βαφτίσουν κάποιον, ένα μικρόν ή μια μικρή. Ξέρει ο άνθρωπος αυτός, ο οποίος αναλαμβάνει να κάνει αυτό το μυστήριο, ότι το θεωρεί μεγάλο και είναι μεγάλο;
Τις ευθύνες που έχει έναντι του Θεού; Επίσης, ο γονέας ξέρει τι πρέπει να κάνει προκειμένου να βαφτίσει το παιδί του;
κάποιον, ξέρω γω, που αποβλέπει σε υλικά οφέλη. Και ξέρετε, στα χωριά ως επί το πλείστον οι πολιτικοί είναι οι περισσότεροι που βαφτίζουν τα παιδιά εκεί. Έχω ένα γνωστό μου, ο οποίος ήταν κοντά σε ένα βουλευτή, και δεν ξέρω πόσα παιδιά έχει βαφτίσει για λογαριασμό του βουλευτού του. Υπολογίστε ότι κάθε βάπτισμα είχε και έναν, δύο, τρεις ψήφους, δεν ξέρω πόσοι ήσαν στο σπίτι, καθόκουμπαροι. Αλλά τίποτα παραπέρα. Κανένα αρνί, κανένα κατσίκι, καμιά γίδα ψητή, αυτό ήταν όλο. Ένα γλέντι και «έχει βαπτίσει ο τάδε». Τώρα, τι γίνεται αυτό, πού είναι αυτό το παιδί, ζει, πεθαίνει; Του είπε κανείς τίποτα για τον Θεό;
Εγώ καλούσα ένα φίλο μου άλλον, που είμαστε μαζί στην Αλβανία και είχαμε συζητήσει πέρα, αν ποτέ γυρίσω πίσω, γυρίσουμε ξανά στην πατρίδα και παντρευτώ, θα με στεφανώσει. Και κρατώντας τον λόγο αυτών των στρατιωτικών της Αλβανίας, όταν ήρθε η ώρα για να παντρευτώ, τον κάλεσα να με στεφανώσει. Αυτής κακοφάνηκε όμως και το εξέφρασε ως παράπονο. Ναι, έχεις παράπονο, αλλά εναντίον εμού το εκφράζεις το παράπονο ή εναντίον του εαυτού σου;
