Summary
The speaker opens the third lecture on the Akathist Hymn, briefly recalling the first two stases and turning now to the third stasis and its treatment of the Virgin's manner of conceiving and giving birth. The speaker argues that every descendant of Adam is born naturally alive but spiritually dead, and that baptism is a burial and resurrection, a second womb of water and Spirit promised to Nicodemus, likened to grafting a cultivated shoot onto wild olive or bitter orange stock. The stanza beginning with Pi describes every rank of angels struck with astonishment at the Incarnation, by which the unapproachable God became approachable to humanity, supported by Baruch, the Transfiguration's measured disclosure of glory, and Isaiah's vision of the coal that cleansed his lips.

Tonight I would like this to be the third part on the Akathist. As you know, we have given two talks, on the two stases — the two sections of the hymn. If only we could manage another two, so that we might complete the whole content of the Akathist Hymn. Roughly, of course, following the twenty-four letters, not the individual themes, not each "Rejoice." In the first two, as you yourselves know, we spoke about the themes — or rather, the hymnographer spoke here and we simply followed along — the theme of the conception, the events surrounding the Theotokos, how she reacted, how he faced —
Joseph faced the matter, how God intervened, how in the end he kept Mary with him and then served in this whole affair. Then the hymnographer set before us the events in Bethlehem, and the events with the magi, how the magi, guided by God, did not return to Herod but departed for their own country. And finally he spoke to us of Symeon the God-receiver, "when Symeon was about to depart this present deceitful age." And with that these incidents came to a close. Now he takes up again the theme of the Theotokos, of these supernatural births, and of a new state of things, because —
the conception did not take place the way ordinary human conception takes place. For if, as we have said on other occasions, Christ the Saviour — the Messiah, rather — had been brought into the world in the way human beings come, then he too would have been a man who could not help anyone else, and he too would have been in need of healing. Saint Gregory Palamas says: if the Saviour came from seed, if someone had sown him and not the Holy Spirit, then he is not a new man; he would not be a new man, a fresh man, but a fallen man himself, and he could not be the Saviour of sinners. He simply could not. We are now, specifically, at the beginning of the third stasis.
It is the letter Nu, and there it says: "The Creator showed forth a new creation, revealing it to us who were made by him." He made a new creation, says the hymn — the Creator did — and he revealed it to us, his own creatures. "Budding forth from an unsown womb." On the one hand, he says, he did this by being born from a womb that had not been sown. "Budding forth from an unsown womb, and preserving it, just as it was, incorrupt." A strange thing happened, he says. On the one hand, he was born from a womb that had not been sown. On the other hand, when he was born, he left her incorrupt.
Let everyone who sees this marvel, he says, and sing praise, and cry aloud, and then greet the Most Holy Theotokos as "flower of incorruption, crown of continence." That is to say, she neither received seed in the human way, nor underwent corruption in the human way. That is why something new came about, a new manner altogether. The sun had never seen it before, and it will never see it again. For the matter of the seedless conception of the Virgin happened once. Christ came into the world once; now he will come not to be born but to judge the world. It is a strange thing, he says — and he greets her for it.
With that sense in mind, allow me to give you one "Rejoice." "Rejoice, you who shine forth the image, the type, of the Resurrection." Do you know what this is saying here, "Rejoice, you who shine forth the type of the Resurrection"? Rejoice, you who give us a picture of how we shall live after the Resurrection.
"Showing forth the life of the angels" — rejoice, you who by your spotless life reveal the life of the angels as well; that is, you have nothing to do with the things of the flesh. Truly, he did act in a strange way; this thing had never happened before, and it is never going to happen again. The very next letter, Xi, speaks in the same spirit, as I see it, and specifically about the manner of the conception and of the birth — that he was both conceived and born in a strange way; and since such a sacrifice was made,
we ought to pay attention to it and to value it. That, I think, is what he is teaching. He says this: "Beholding a strange birth" — because we have seen, he says, a strange and paradoxical conception and birth, which certainly took place for our sake; this is how it had to be. It could not be otherwise. Since what man lost on the paths of sin was life itself, he could not receive that life back from anywhere except from Life itself, from the Author of life. What happened to Adam and Eve when they sinned?
They were cut off from God. They died spiritually. What is the medicine for death? Life. Who has life? Not even the angels have life. Does Abraham have life? Who has life? They all partake of life. The life is not their own; none of them is Life itself.
That is exactly why Life itself came. He came in person. When the priest or the bishop performs the Proskomide in the morning and takes out the Lamb — that is, Christ — to place him on the paten, do you know what he says? Not an angel, not an archangel, but the Lord himself saved us from the curse of the law. No one else could save us;
no one else had the medicine to save us. What was missing from man was life. Today, if the world cannot appreciate what Christ is for its life, both in this passing age and in eternity, it is because it does not know this one detail. What is he lacking? What is missing from the person who comes into this world? The person who comes into this world does not come alive; he comes dead. He has natural life; what he lacks is spiritual life. And this spiritual life Christ gives him at Baptism. If he believes and is buried — for Baptism is a burial. And having buried him, Christ raises him up. From that hour onward a person lives spiritually, after his Baptism. From that moment he sees differently. Earlier he was like
a puppy that is born blind — not as regards natural life, but as regards spiritual life. People do not know this, and that is exactly why they cannot understand or value the work that the Church of Christ does, the work that his priests do, the work that the Mysteries do and what they offer. And if a person will also take into account, alongside this, a detail that concerns David, in Psalm 50, it can help: "In iniquities was I conceived, and in sins did my mother bear me." How can you say that your child is a little angel? Say it dies unbaptised now. It is not a little angel at all. Its soul is a black coal. It has natural life, yes, but within, its spiritual life is not what
God wants. That is why Christ comes into the world — God himself — to be born, in order to help man. The Saviour had to stand outside the way in which man is created. Man is created in his mother's womb from his father's seed. There, you understand, the ovum and the sperm, the spermatozoon, come together and make life. But if this is not born again, if it is not allowed to be born anew, what will we have? We will have Hell, and death. It is as I have told you on another occasion: like the orange seed that we plant, expecting it to give us an orange tree. And yet it does not give an orange tree; it gives a bitter-orange, and we graft it so as to have an orange tree. So it is with the seed of a man. So it is with human seed.
A stone from an olive, and it makes a wild olive. And we graft it so that it becomes an olive tree, so that we can eat olives from the olive tree. So it is with the seed of man. It is wild; it is dead because of sin. And all of us who come from Adam — for we are all of one blood — have need of this grafting. That is why our Lord, when he spoke with Nicodemus, in the passage we read in the third chapter of John, said to him: Nicodemus, unless you are born of water and of the Spirit, you are not going to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. And Nicodemus supposed — because at first the Lord had said to him, unless you are born from above — he supposed that he
would have to go back into his mother's womb. Can I, an old man, at this age, go into my mother's womb and be born again? That is not what I mean, says the Lord. Of water and of the Spirit. The font is a second womb. A person has two births. In the one he has his natural birth, when he is born of his mother. In the other he has a supernatural birth. In the one he is born; in the other he is born again. You women take the leaven and renew the leaven so that the dough will rise. Exactly the same thing happens here. It is not enough for a person to be born; he must also be grafted with Christ. That is what the Lord did here. Some time ago, years back, when the vineyards at Spata were at their height, they were struck by phylloxera.
What did they do? They brought grafting stock from America — not from here; they brought the graft in from abroad, to graft the vines, to keep the vineyard alive. Not from the infected stock here. That is how man is, whoever he may be, so long as he is a descendant of Adam. Not Abraham, not Isaac, not Daniel — anyone at all, whoever you may think is great and righteous before God: his seed too was sinful, since it came from the common pool. Let us grant that Adam is the Marathon Reservoir and the world is all the taps, all the faucets there are in Athens. If the water there is poisoned, will not all the taps have poisoned water? Where will the unpoisoned water be found — from someone who would himself be in need of a physician? And that is the view I told you of, the view of Saint Gregory Palamas.
So then, as he told us here earlier, that he showed forth a new creation, that he made a new creation, that he brought a new creature to man in order to save him. He did so many things. He was conceived in a strange way, and he was born in a strange way. He did not corrupt his mother — he left her incorrupt — and at the conception, too, he did not make her one who had been sown; she remained unsown. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary the Saviour came. And so, on account of these strange things that God did for you, O man, and for me, the hymn says: "Beholding a strange, a new birth" — seeing this strange thing — "let us become strangers to the world"; that is, let us become estranged from the world, if it is possible. Because when such a great sacrifice is made for man,
man is indifferent, and he clings to the world, and he thinks he exists only for here, for this earth, and he lives like a worm around his own flesh, without seeing anything else, without seeing that he has a higher destiny. For the one who came down here from above and visited man came in order to take man with him, to carry him up to himself. But when a person crawls around his own scrap of flesh and around nothing else, he cannot rise up and fly. That is why it says: "Beholding, then, a strange birth, let us become strangers to the world" — if possible, that is — "transferring the nous, the spiritual intellect, to heaven," saying: there is my homeland. "For on this account the exalted God appeared on earth as a lowly man" — as a man. That, he says, is why he came down here. "Willing" — desiring —
"to draw to himself those who cry out to him: Alleluia." He willed, it says, to take us up. That is why he came down below: to draw us, to pull us, to lift us up, that is, from where we had fallen through the deception, and to carry us there. This is what it says here. And now, at the letter Omicron, just a little further down, it says exactly how this happened. It is a strange thing. Many people are of the opinion that God left heaven and came to earth and became man, and that up there no one was left. That he abandoned it all just as it was and came to find man. That is what people believe. It would be strange. Such things happen to us. As a man, for me to be here,
I am not at home at this hour; I am not in my office; I am not anywhere else. Or you: in order to be here, you are not in your houses. But this is not how it is with God. These things belong to human beings. These things happen with the angels. These things happen with the demons. These things happen with the saints. These things happen with the Most Holy Theotokos. We do not have omnipresence. God, however, is present everywhere. You must not suppose that when he came down here and became man he did not also remain there above. He knows this better than we do, and he teaches it to us in the stanza for the letter Omicron of the Akathist, saying: "He was wholly among those below" — wholly, he says, among those below — "and in no way absent from those above" — and he never left anything empty up there, never left his own place — "the uncircumscribed Word (Logos)" — he never departed from the Father.
There was a Father and there is a Father, and there is a Son at the same time. And the Holy Spirit. And wherever the Spirit is, there too are the Son and the Father. And wherever the Father is, there too are the Son and the Spirit. This is a strange thing. 'For it was a divine condescension, and not a change of place.' He does not move from here to there. A holy condescension. That is, what happened? God, seated upon his throne, stretched out his hand to men. Can he leave his throne? He stretched out his hand to men, so that people could take hold of his hand and be lifted up. Can he leave his place? Our Church has a beautiful prayer. When the priest comes back in through the Holy of Holies, among the other things he says there:
that you are with the Father, and with the Thief in Paradise, and in Hades, everywhere uncircumscribed — that is, there is no place where you are not, all at the same time. This is what we mean when we say 'who art everywhere present and fillest all things,' when we say the prayer 'O Heavenly King.' That is exactly what he is saying here. The one who came down left nothing empty above. He was there as well. And he did it, he says, as a divine condescension, not a change of place. He did not leave here, leaving this place empty, and go there. He was there and he was here. Of course these things are strange to us human beings, and a person cannot grasp them by reasoning, and that is why God has given him faith.
Faith! And that faith we have driven out more and more, and we have replaced it with knowledge — and anything that our supposed knowledge does not inform us about, we reject; because we are not always honest. There are countless things that we simply believe, because if we did not believe them we could not get anywhere. We could not travel, we could not get an education, we could not accomplish anything. We believe them — but those things have nothing to do with our soul. Take me: I set out to travel abroad. If I did not believe that the pilot is not out of his mind, if I did not believe that the aeroplane really has been checked,
if I did not believe in the laws of science — would I have got on board, would I have gone? I would not have gone. I set off and went to Agrinio on Saturday. I entrusted myself to a man I do not know. But I believed that he is a driver, without knowing his name or even his face, and that he would take me there. I came out at Rio, I boarded the ferry, and the sea was enormous. But I trusted the laws of nature, and the laws and the skill of the driver, of the captain, who would bring us across. I did the same thing again today, coming back. If I had to take all these people off to the asylum and have them examined to see whether they are mad, so that I could get a certificate — if I were able, and I am not able, to inspect the car, to inspect the ferry, to inspect all of it — would I ever have got anywhere?
And yet I believe all these things, don't I? We believe them. How do you begin and learn your letters? The teacher tells you, this is alpha and this is beta, and together they make 'ba.' But you did not ask him why it is called alpha and why it is called beta, nor why they make 'ba' — you did not ask him, and so you moved forward. Whatever has nothing to do with faith and the salvation of your soul, you do not merely believe, you swallow it whole. But whatever has to do with your soul — why is it different there? There you bring that little brain of yours down to work, to solve these questions. I told you once that it is written in an apocryphal gospel that a teacher in the days of our Christ, when our Christ was a small boy,
asked his father to let him teach the boy his letters.
Send him to me, he says, so that I may teach him his letters. And our Lord went as a small boy to the teacher. And the teacher began telling him about alpha and so on. And the little one, the Lord, says to him: hypocrite. You do not know the alpha, he says — what does alpha mean? Tell me what alpha means, so that we may sit down to our letters. Do you have an answer? And our Christ began to explain the alpha to him, what the alpha is — such a definition that your head would spin. I have written these things down in a small booklet, about Christ from twelve years old to thirty. It is all faith. Without faith nothing happens. Faith is a sweet thing. If you did not believe that they have been careful with it, would you eat out? You buy bread. Are you going to take it to the state laboratory to see whether they have put poison in it? Of course not — you take it and you eat it. In everything you go by faith. But when it comes to the matter of Christ...
I will take you apart, I will cut you into little pieces to find out what you are. But how can that be? Once you have taken him apart you will not have him any more. Right now you are listening to Panagopoulos and you can see Panagopoulos. If you take hold of me and cut me into little pieces, do you think you will have Panagopoulos? It is the same with this matter. You want to find out how I think, how I act, what I do, what I make. That is how it is. And even so, man, this egotist, wants to find out how. Our Most Holy Theotokos herself said, 'How shall this be?' Do I know how to explain it to you, she says, and would you understand it even if I told you? Do we have shelves inside us big enough to receive the wisdom of the Godhead — how he worked, and how these things come about? He came forth, and he came forth. How did he leave her a virgin? Where does it say this? Scripture says so. Does not Scripture itself say that Christ entered while the doors were shut?
And he went out while the doors were shut. And how did he go out — through the keyhole? How did it happen? Did he not eat with those two men on the road to Emmaus, in the house? Did he not break the bread and give it to them and then vanish from their sight? How did he vanish? And after he had left there, when the others were in the upper room saying, we saw him too, in the breaking of the bread — did he not come in among them again while the doors were shut? How did it happen? Are we going to correct God as well? Are we going to make God small enough for that pinch of brains we have to interpret him — a pinch that understands nothing, nothing at all? What do we understand, what do we know? It is a shame on us; and yet I say, if I do not see, if I do not... I do not believe.
But he gave us faith, and the Apostle Paul gave a beautiful definition of it when he said, 'the evidence of things not seen.' The evidence of things not seen — that is, things I do not see, and yet through faith I test them; I believe it, I see it. And look how, out of our own malice, our eyes travel all the way to Australia — do you realise that? Out of our malice our eyes go to Australia. 'It is as if I were standing right there; they are talking about me now, and of course he is sitting there running me down.' You can see your own malice over there; you can see, but what you see comes out of your malice. So why do you not turn that crooked thing around the other way, so that you can see the things of faith too, the things Christ has told you? But it is egotism; it will not let us. So then, 'He was wholly in the world below,' here. And it is not Christ alone; he has the Father and the Son with him,
and the Spirit — the whole of God is here below, 'and in no way absent from those above,' and he is above as well; the uncircumscribed Word (Logos), he says, never left what is above, and he is above, because above there is the Spirit and the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Wherever one Person is, all three Persons are. 'For it was a divine condescension,' he says — God condescends, as I told you, without leaving his throne. 'And not a change of place' — and a birth,
'and a birth from a Virgin who had received God, who hears these things.' That is, this coming down — this divine condescension, rather — was brought about by the fact that the Lord was born of a virgin who was, of course, wholly dedicated to God, and who now hears us as we sing her praises: Rejoice, land of the uncontainable God,
the place that made room for the God whom nothing can contain. We greet her as a field, as a vessel, that contained the uncontainable God. But this is a strange thing; it is a Mystery. That is why he goes on and says, Rejoice, door of the sacred Mystery.
Anyone who tries — as we often say, and as we are maintaining now — to solve the things of God with his own reasoning will be left standing in the entrance hall. The nous of man, the spiritual intellect, is not fashioned to discern or to know the things of God. Not even our Most Holy Theotokos knows God: his essence (ousia), his nature, his divine uncreated energies, his wisdom — not even she. Much less the angels and the rest. 'Only God knows the things of God,' Paul says to the Corinthians. The Spirit knows the things of God; the Holy Spirit knows them. Because the Spirit too is God, just as Christ is, and just as God the Father is, who is the cause both of Christ and of the Holy Spirit.
that we are discussing, and this holy man sets his own seal upon it. And in the next letter, at Pi, he says: 'Every nature of angels was amazed at the great work of Thy incarnation.' At what it saw — that God had become man — every nature of angels, he says, was amazed; that is, all the ranks of the angels. They were seized with astonishment, with wonder, before this great Mystery of the incarnation. For Peter writes in his epistle
that the angels, seeing where they were being sent to minister in all that was taking place, wanted — out of curiosity, if I may use such a word — the angels, it says, desired to stoop down and look into these things. It is like a great and serious household where something is going on, something is being prepared, something is happening, and the young servants outside want to peek in and see what is happening inside. Something like that — I am speaking in human terms, of course — happened with the angels too; and this is what leads him to write, 'every nature of angels,' that is, all the ranks of the angels, 'was amazed.'
'Every nature' — all of them were amazed, seized with astonishment. 'The great work of Thy incarnation.' How you became man in order to play this role for mankind. 'For the unapproachable God' — that is, seeing you, who as God are unapproachable. Can God be approached even by the angels? If God does not condescend even to the angels themselves, can the angels stand before him? Our God is a consuming fire; who can stand before him? 'The unapproachable God' — as if to say, the incomprehensible one, the one who as God cannot be approached — 'it beheld as a man approachable to all.' You have now become, he says,
easy for all to approach. That is, you became man. Even though the angels cannot approach him, he condescended and became man, and men approach him. Now he speaks with people, he eats with people, he sleeps among people, he counsels people, he travels together with people, he guides them, he teaches them. Baruch the Prophet, in his third chapter, says that God appeared on earth and lived among men — that one day God would come and would clothe himself in human nature; because if he had come as God with all his glory, and not veiled within human nature, man would not have been able to approach him. And likewise, if the one who was to set us right with God had been merely a man, he would not have been able to approach God. The two opposing camps, if you will allow me to put it that way, are God and man. Dust on the one side; on the other the unattainable, the eternal, the fire. If God had come as he is, men would have been turned to ashes. If man had gone to find God, again man would have been turned to ashes. That is why he clothed himself in flesh, became the God-Man, and united man with God. Have you seen those pencils that are blue at one end and red at the other? That is exactly what happened.
It was condescension, it was his love, and he became approachable to men. At the Transfiguration he wanted to show them something of what he has within. Did you notice? He opened it just a little and it showed, and they all fell to the ground as though they would die. It says there: 'You showed your disciples your glory as far as they were able to bear it' — as much as they could take, no more. If he had shown them all his glory, what he truly is, they would have been lost. If these things are followed carefully, they can be explained, and the questions in our heads can be put in order. God does not want us to remain in the dark, nor does the Gospel; the Gospel has said these things rightly. Everything we need, he has told us. All that is needed is that we use the right way to receive it.
Out of our egotism we do not use that way. In the sixth chapter of Isaiah there is a vision. God showed himself there to Isaiah — read it if you like. When Isaiah saw God, he was terrified. God was sending Isaiah out to preach, and he said, am I to go and preach? I, a sinful man, I with my unclean lips — how am I, filthy as I am, to go and preach? And God says to him, do not say that, and he shows him an altar. On the altar there were coals, live coals. A live coal is taken up with a pair of tongs, with a small
with a pair of tongs, with a pair of pincers, as we used to call them — and he took that coal and touched it to Isaiah's lips, and he says to him: "Behold, this has touched your lips; it will take away your iniquities and cleanse your sins." These, in fact, are the very words the priests say when they receive Holy Communion inside the sanctuary, with the Holy Chalice. Afterwards, when they are being cleansed, this is what we say: "Behold, this has touched my lips; it will take away my iniquities and cleanse my sins." Now let me come and stand in front of this scene. Christ cannot be grasped — that's true — and yet he has given us a pair of tongs called faith, with which we can take hold of him and make use of him. So why don't we use those tongs called faith?
There is a way to handle it. You take the coal, you set it down, you carry it off, and you go and light a fire with it. You have those tongs to pick it up with. So why is it that with every material thing you reach for the method that gets the job done, but in matters of faith your pride won't let you? A person will not use faith, that mystical pair of tongs, so as to be helped. He could — but he wants to manage with knowledge alone. And knowledge doesn't help you. Does your bare hand help you pick up a burning coal? You'll be burned; you can't hold it. Be careful. With the tongs you can pick it up — yes, you can. So why, in this case here, don't you do the same? So then, that whole angelic world was struck with astonishment when it saw the great work of Your Incarnation.
"For it beheld Him who as God is unapproachable" — the One no one can come near — "as a man approachable to all." It sees people walking right up to him now, and him saying, "Let the children come here so I can bless them." Aren't these strange things? To see him being crucified, all of it — how did the angels look on without their heads spinning?
dwelling among us, to set us right, to reconcile us with the Father. Is that a small thing? That is why it says he hears from all of them this: Alleluia — that is, Glory to You, O God; praise God — for what he has done, which is beyond the grasp even of the angels themselves, who were astounded
at the Incarnate Dispensation: that she conceived without seed; that she gave birth and remained incorrupt, the Theotokos, the God-bearer; that she conceived without pleasure; that she gave birth without birth pangs. All of this left people truly mute as fish. Who is there who could speak? Let's imagine the greatest orator of all, Demosthenes, brought up here in front of us — or all those clever wordsmiths who are always ready with an answer, answers crafty, or witty, or right to the point. Who can say a single word about how these things happened? Nothing. In this case they are all fish. That is what this holy man writes in the stanza beginning with Rho: "Eloquent orators we behold mute as fish before you, O Theotokos."
In your case, he says, we see the orators who in other situations talk on and on without ever finishing, always ready with an answer — but in your case they are left speechless, mute as fish, truly fish. "Eloquent orators we behold mute as fish before you, O Theotokos. For they are at a loss to say how you remain a Virgin and yet were able to give birth." How can they explain it? They cannot explain it. Elsewhere they are ready to answer, to poke fun, to do this and that. Here, he says, we shut the door — they cannot say a thing. "But we, marvelling at the Mystery, cry out in faith: Rejoice, vessel of the Wisdom of God." "But we, marvelling at the Mystery" — do you know what a Mystery is?
It is something I believe without being able to put it into words. It comes from myo — my mouth is closed; I cannot formulate it. That is what a Mystery is: I believe it, it is real, I hold it inside me, but I cannot express it. The things that took place around the person of the Theotokos cannot be put into words. That is why the Theotokos is a person beyond all explanation. And because she played this weighty role, she was of course counted worthy — after two words she said: "Behold, behold the handmaid of the Lord." Everything rests on that. It was her obedience that counted. Yes, certainly her purity too,
but her obedience — because the Theotokos was not forced. The question was put to her, whether she accepted. She questioned what was proposed, by reason, in a human way, since these things do not look reasonable; but in the end she gave way and said, in effect, I lift up my hands: do whatever you will. And so all these things came about that we now see. And there is a beautiful "Rejoice" that goes with this.
"tearing apart the tangled webs of the Athenians" — that is, the intricately crafted rational constructions of the Athenians, meaning the philosophers. Rejoice — he greets the All-Holy, who dealt with the Athenians like that. "Rejoice, you who fill the nets of the fishermen" — simple people, people who simply believed. You filled the nets with human beings, not with fish like those others you left speechless. Not with fish like that. Do you follow?
This is what I was telling you another time: if you ever get the chance, study the Akathist, don't just read through it. And there is one more "Rejoice" — allow me to mention it to you — which we find in another place as well. This one: "Rejoice, olkas" — he greets her. An olkas is a ship, a vessel; an olkas is a safe ship. "Rejoice, ship of those who wish to be saved." Those who want to be saved — because for all that he said, for all that he wrote, for all that he prophesied, for all that he did, for all that he will do and all that will come to pass, it still comes down to whether the person wants it. The person is always asked: do they want it, or do they not?
No one is coerced — and coerced, of course, no one is saved either. The human "I want" is absolutely necessary. That is why you will have noticed it in yourselves: the more you believed, the more you gave yourselves over, the more you let go of your own will and left yourselves to God, the better you stood. You are that much more at peace, your mind is that much more illumined, and you live that much more quietly and peacefully. Because the person who to all appearances entrusts their affairs to God, but does not hand over the file of their life — who does not entrust the whole of it to Christ,
who keeps back the rest with a "yes, but" — that person does not have Christ as a helper the way the one does who gives everything, who leaves it all in his hands, who hands over the entire file for him to manage. Sometimes we have a serious case, and we think hard about whether we should entrust all the evidence, the receipts, the copies, the papers to the file we are going to hand to the lawyer. We do think about it. But in the end we decide we must, because the lawyer cannot act unless he has all the papers in his hands. And so we entrust everything — here, in worldly, earthly matters — into the hands of a lawyer who might be hit by a car a little later, or whose office might catch fire, or who might sell your case out, and so on. And still you entrust everything to one
mere man. But Christ we do not trust. Here, to someone you met only yesterday, you give your honour, your good name, everything you have. To God, no. So how is this God supposed to act? He cannot act. That is why it says here "who wish" — "of those who wish to be saved." The All-Holy is a ship: all who go aboard her, all who make use of this raft, will cross to the far shore, will be saved. That is why our Church places her right opposite you at the Beautiful Gate. When you stand at the Beautiful Gate and receive Holy Communion, above you is the Most Holy Theotokos, the Platytera, the icon of her who is more spacious than the heavens. Come, I am waiting for you. She stands in that very place where the first Eve stood, who by her pride,
by her sin and her disobedience, shut Paradise; and then the second Eve came and opened it and says, Come, let me tell you. That is how he presents her here. If people knew what the Most Holy Theotokos is for their salvation, and for their life in general, then whether they were drinking water, or eating, or walking, they would do everything in the name of the All-Holy. Hers is the sweetest person and the sweetest name, just like our own mother's. Have you noticed that whatever happens, we cry, "Mother!"? We don't cry "Father!" — just as in those moments people cry, "My Christ! My All-Holy Lady!" Even people who blaspheme her cry "My All-Holy Lady!" in their hardest moments. It is woven into our very being.
We have a mother in the flesh, but we also have a spiritual mother, whether we want to understand that or not. When our soul finds itself let down by the powers of the body, that is where it turns. It is warm there. Even someone who was blaspheming her yesterday, or a few minutes ago — if something happens, they will cry out, "Our All-Holy Lady!" But we do not use that name as much as we should. The fathers on the Holy Mountain do this beautifully. Whatever you say to them, they answer, "If the All-Holy wills it." "If the All-Holy grants us the morning." "If she wills it, we'll go there; if she wills it, we'll do that." In other words, they are more worshippers of the All-Holy, as I once put it, than worshippers of Christ. Of course, this is not a doctrinal statement, because if they honour the Most Holy Theotokos so much, it is because Christ stands in the middle of it — he is the one who gave her this glory, who gave her this power, who gave her this worth. So here he presents her as a raft. An olkas is a safe ship.
a safe ship: those who go aboard her, who make her their intercessor — "By the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us" — those people will be saved. "Rejoice, haven of those sailing the sea of life." A haven, he says, for those sailing on the open sea. Because here a person is making their way across an open sea. Indeed, Isaac the Syrian says that life here is a putrid sea, a filthy sea. Good luck to anyone who can get through it. But when a person is willing to make use of the Theotokos, she will help them, she will guard them, she will keep them safe, she will get there ahead of them. The proof is this.
If you want to see the worth and the power of the Theotokos, and how much we need her, look at the hatred Satan has against the All-Holy. Satan does not hate our Christ as much — even though Christ crushed his head at Golgotha — as he hates the Most Holy Theotokos, who served Christ up to him in human form. Because, as John Chrysostom says in his catechetical homily on the night of the Resurrection — if we may borrow for a moment what is said there of Christ — Satan took what he saw, a man, and fell by what he did not see, the Godhead. It took earth, he says, and encountered Heaven. Because he got Christ out of the way through those who opposed him. He had him raised up on the Cross
as a righteous man, not as God — for against God he would never have laid a hand — but as a righteous man: "Let us condemn him to a shameful death," he says, "that we may know his forbearance." And from there — because our Christ kept them off balance: one moment he showed them what God is, the next he showed them what man is, and they stood there staring. He ate — does God eat? He wept — does God weep? If he is God, why does he ask where they had laid Lazarus? He would know. But the greatest delusion Satan fell into in this whole affair, the thing that finally made him dare, was on Great Thursday, when our Christ was praying and said, "Let this cup pass from me." Satan is watching. If he is God, what is he afraid of?
And so he had him raised up on the Cross. Then nature began to protest and brought on darkness. The tombs opened and the dead came out. The rocks split, all of it. There was an earthquake, and so on. And then he says to him, "Come down from the Cross. Come down from the Cross." I am not coming down. First I will crush your head, and then — you are the ones who put me up here. So this is something that only a mystery can cover, and that mystery is the All-Holy. Satan hates the Most Holy Theotokos, then, because she served God up to him as a man, and she slipped through his fingers. He could not keep watch over her when she was small, could not corrupt her, could not prevent him being born of a Virgin, as he was. Because back in Eden he had been told about "the seed of the woman" — and he knows that a woman has no seed; the seed belongs to the man.
He had every angle covered, so that the corruption in the world would be such that no virgin would be left. Yes — but God took her and set her in the Holy of Holies and guarded her there. He saw a child nursing at his mother's breast, and this was God. The nursing of the little one, he says: she slipped past you. You didn't catch it. God weeps. And he cried like the little child he was, because he grew up in every way as a human being does. All of these were the paths along which Satan was deluded, and dared, and did this thing. That is why he hates the All-Holy so much. There is a story told: a monk, an old man, was warred against for fifty-five years by Satan with the passion of fornication, in a hermitage where he lived. One day the devil had appeared before him and was talking with him.
The monk says to him: the two of us have both grown old — won't you leave me alone at last? And the devil says: I will leave you alone, if you promise me something — will you really do it? The monk, full of hope, says: I will do it, whatever you tell me. And he says: that icon you keep, that piece of wood you've got in there in your hut — you'll take it out. It was an icon of our Most Holy Theotokos. That, he says, you will take out of here. Now the monk was in a real bind. And there, faced with the torment of fornication, he gave his promise. But then he said: I'll give you my answer in three days. So he gets up and goes deep into the desert and finds a man there, and he tells him: this and this has happened to me. Under the weight of this torment I made a promise to Satan, and he laid down this canon for me, this rule — that I should take the icon out of there. And the man says to him: that you must not do. Sooner choose to die.
The Most Holy Theotokos will not let you go to Hell, even if you have to go on falling into fornication. And that is what happened. Satan comes back on the third day for his answer, and the monk tells him: if that is what it takes, let me go to Hell together with the Most Holy Theotokos rather than go with you and be rid of this temptation of fornication. People will never grasp what this whole matter of the Most Holy Theotokos really is. The last stanza in this section is: Wishing to save the world, the Adorner of all things came to it of His own accord, unbidden; and being Shepherd, as God He appeared for our sake among us as a man; for calling like by like, as God He hears. God willed, of His own free will, to save the world by Himself — He who fashioned it, the Adorner of all things — and He came of Himself, unbidden, on His own initiative, and God became man with us, and He was reconciled with men and spoke with men. And so, he says, we cry out Alleluia, and we say Glory to God for what He has done. And here the third part of the Akathist comes to an end. My prayer is that our Most Holy Theotokos will help us and give us understanding,
so that we may live this life here, and one day find her there.

τέτοια θυσία θα πρέπει να το προσέξουμε και να το εκτιμήσουμε. Αυτό μάλλον διδάσκει. Λέγει το εξής, ξένον τόκον ιδόντες, επειδή είδαμε λέει μια ξένη, παράδοξο σύλληψη και γέννηση, που ασφαλώς αυτή έγινε για το χατήρι το δικό μας, έτσι έπρεπε να γίνει. Δεν μπορούσε, εφόσον ο άνθρωπος εκείνο που έχασε στα μονοπάτια της αμαρτίας ήταν η ζωή, δεν μπορούσε αυτή τη ζωή να αντιλάβει ει μη μόνο από την ίδια τη ζωή, από τον αρχηγό της ζωής. Τι είπεστε ο Αδάμ και η Εύα όταν ημάρτησαν;
δεν πίστευα στους νόμους της επιστήμης, θα ανέβαινα επάνω, θα πήγαινα; Δεν θα πήγαινα. Έφυγα, πήγα στο Αγρίνιο το Σάββατο. Ενεπιστεύθην σε ένα άνθρωπο που δεν το ξέρω. Πίστεψα όμως ότι αυτός είναι οδηγός, χωρίς να ξέρω ούτε το όνομά του ούτε τη φάτσα του, να με πάει. Βγήκα στο Ρίο, μπήκα στο φέριμποτ και θάλασσα τεραστία Ευαγγελία. Εμπιστεύτηκα όμως στους νόμους της φύσεως, στους νόμους και την ικανότητα του οδηγού, του καπετάνιου, που θα μας βγάλει πέρα. Το ίδιο έκαμα και σήμερα που γύρισα. Εάν όλους αυτούς τους έπρεπε να τους πάω στο τρελοκομείο να τους εξετάσω αν είναι τρελοί για να πάρω πιστοποιητικό, αν εγώ ήμουνα σε θέση, γιατί δεν είμαι σε θέση, να εξετάσω το αυτοκίνητο, να εξετάσω το φέριμποτ, να εξετάσω αυτά, θα είχα πάει πουθενά;
σε διαλύσω κάτω, θα σε κάνω κομματάκια να μάθω τι είσαι. Πώς είναι, όταν τον διαλύσεις δεν θα τον έχεις. Σας ακούτε τώρα τον Παναγόπουλο έτσι και βλέπετε τον Παναγόπουλο. Όταν με πιάσετε να με κάνετε κομματάκια, λέτε θα έχετε τον Παναγόπουλο; Έτσι είναι και το θέμα του στιγμού. Για να βρείτε πώς σκέφτομαι, πώς ενεργώ, τι κάνω, τι φτιάχνω. Έτσι είναι. Και αιτούτοις ο άνθρωπος, ο εγωιστής αυτός, θέλει να βρει πώς. Και η Παναγία μας είπε πώς έστε με τούτο. Ξέρω εγώ, λέει, να σου πω ή θα το καταλάβεις εσύ αν σου το πω; Έχουμε εμείς ανάλογο ράφη να δεχθούμε τη σοφία της Θεότητος; Πώς ενήργησε και πώς γίνονται αυτά τα πράγματα. Βγήκε, λέει, και βγήκε. Πώς την άφησε, λέει, η Παρθένα. Πού το λέει αυτό; Το λέει η Γραφή έτσι. Η ίδια η Γραφή δεν λέγει ότι ο Χριστός τεκλημένον των θυρών εισήθε;
με μία λαβίδα, με μία τσιμπίδα όπως τα λέγαμε, και πήρε τον άνθρακα αυτόν και τον επέρασε στα χείλη των Ισαΐων και του λέγει τούτο ύψατο των χειλαίων σου και αφελείτες ανομίας και τας αμαρτίας περικαθαρεί. Είναι μάλιστα τα λόγια αυτά τα οποία λένε και οι ιερείς όταν κοινωνούν με το Άγιο Ποτήριο μέσα. Έπειτα όταν καθαρίζονται, αυτό λέμε, τούτο ύψατο των χειλαίων μου και αφελή τας ανομίας μου, τας αμαρτίας μου περικαθαρεί. Έρχομαι εγώ τώρα μπροστά σε αυτή τη σκηνή. Ο Χριστός είναι άπιαστος, έτσι, όμως μας έχει δώσει μια τσιμπίδα που λέγεται πίστης, που μπορούμε να τον πιάσουμε και να τον χρησιμοποιήσουμε. Γιατί αυτή την τσιμπίδα που λέγεται πίστης δεν τη χρησιμοποιούμε;
Δική σου λέει περίπτωση, βλέπουμε τους ρήτορας οι οποίοι σε άλλες περιπτώσεις ομιλούν χωρίς να τελειώνουν και έτοιμοι να απαντήσουν, στη δικιά σου την περίπτωση λέει μένουν άφωνοι ως ηχθείες, ψάρια πραγματικά. Ρήτορας Πολυφθόγκους, Οσυχθίας Αφώνους, ο Ρώμενε πισί Θεοτόκε. Απορούσι γαρ λέγειν το πως και παρθένος μένης και τε κίνηση σας. Πώς μπορεί να το ερμηνεύσουνε; Δεν μπορεί να το ερμηνεύσουνε. Ερώτη είναι έτοιμοι να απαντήσουν, να σατιρίσουν, να, να, να. Εδώ το κλείνουμε, λέει, δεν μπορούν να μιλήσουν τίποτα. Εμείς δε το μυστήριον θαυμάζοντες, πιστός βόμεν χαίρε Σοφίας Θεού Δοχείων. Εμείς δε το μυστήριον θαυμάζοντες, ξέρεις τι πάει να πει μυστήριον;
Τα σπλοκάς διεσπόσα, τα περίτεχνα δηλαδή λογικά κατασκευάσματα των Αθηναίων, δηλαδή των φιλοσόφων. Χαίρε, χαιρετίζει την Παναγία που τους έφερε στους Αθηναίους έτσι, χαίρε των αλλιέων τας Αγίνας πληρούσα, ανθρώπων απλών, απλώς που πίστευσαν, που εγέμισες με ανθρώπους, όχι με ψάρια σαν αυτούς που τους άφησες αφώνους, όχι με τέτοια ψάρια, καταλάβατε;
έναν δίκαιο, όχι ως Θεόν, στε Θεόν δεν θα βάρει ποτέ τα χέρια του, σαν έναν δίκαιο, ασχήμονι θανάτω ετάσωμεν το δίκαιο αυτό λέει, ίνα γνώμεν το επιεικές αυτού. Από εκεί, γιατί ο Χριστός μας τους πήγαινε μια στο καρφί μια στο πέταλο, μια τους έδειχνε τι είναι Θεός, μια τους έδειχνε τι είναι άνθρωπος και κοιτάχαναν αυτοί, έτρωγε, τρώει ο Θεός, έκλαιγε, κλαίει ο Θεός. Αν είναι Θεός ρωτάει που έβαλαν τον Λάζαρο, θα χάνει εκεί. Μεγαλύτερα δε πλάνη την οποία αν υπέστη ο Σατανάς σε όλη αυτή την υπόθεση και το απετόλμησε εν τέλει, ήταν τη Μεγάλη Πέμπτη, εκεί που ο Χριστός μας προσευχόμενος είπε παρελθέτω απ' εμού το ποτήριον. Σατανάς παρακολουθεί. Αν είναι Θεός τι φοβάται;
