Summary

The lecture presents Jesus Christ as the spiritual center of human existence and argues that His divinity is uniquely demonstrated by the prophecies preceding His earthly life. Further prophecies anticipate Christ’s flight into Egypt, His public ministry in Galilee, the unjust hatred directed against Him, and His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The lecture concludes that the cumulative witness of prophecy, biblical typology, Christian worship, and historical evidence confirms Jesus as the incarnate God and promised Savior.

The subject of Jesus is our starting point, because everything begins with Him. Just as the sun is the source of the moon’s light, of the stars, and in general of all vitality and existence—and if the sun were to disappear, everything would cease—so it is, in a certain sense, spiritually with the subject of Jesus. Many people stumble over the Person of Jesus, especially all those who still remain outside the faith,

because they cannot accept, absorb, and make room within themselves for

the Person of Jesus in His divinity. They may go only so far as to acknowledge Him as a great man, a wise teacher, a reformer, or whatever else they may call Him; but they stumble over the divinity of Jesus. And I say that they will discover things to be different when they pass beyond the grave, but by then the opportunity will have been lost, because, as you know, no return tickets are issued there. Whatever a person has done is done. There is no longer any opportunity to correct anything. At this point I would like to speak about this subject, but how can I prove that Christ is God? Apologetics offers many arguments: this argument and that one, the existence of a Creator, the fact that someone must have made all these things, and many others. But there is one fundamental fact that no one can dispute: the prehistory of Jesus. What makes Christ stand out so strikingly, what clearly points Him out from all others, is His prehistory. As you know, even the greatest people who have passed through this world, or ever will, have only a history. Jesus, however, was proclaimed in advance within history.

Thus, the prehistory of Jesus gives Him His distinctive character, emphasis, and uniqueness. Through it, anyone who wishes may discover—God compels no one—that He truly was not merely man, but also God. Why God became man is another subject. Our subject now is to present several pieces of evidence from the prehistory of Jesus.

How is His prehistory demonstrated? From the moment each person is born, the recorder begins writing down his life until the hour of his death. Then the record closes. A cold marble slab covers his life, and his story comes to an end. But it is not so with Jesus. His story began much earlier; it did not begin at the hour of His birth. We know, for example, where Napoleon the Great was born, how many years he lived, where he fought, and where he died—and there the story ends. We know that the Kaiser did this and that. We know about other great men, such as Alexander the Great and whoever else might be called great. But with Jesus we have a threefold testimony.

Concerning Jesus, we know beforehand when He would come. We also know where He would come and where He would be born, and we even know how He would be born. Someone may ask, “Are there many different ways for people to be born?” Christ could not be born in the way ordinary human beings are born. He was not to be a common man—koinos in Greek—but a new man, kainos. Was not Christ to be the Savior, the Messiah for whom the world was waiting, who would redeem it? He could not be merely an ordinary man; He had to be a new man. That is why the manner of His birth was unique. He was neither conceived nor born as other human beings are conceived and born. Even in His birth, the conditions that would have prevailed had Eve not sinned were preserved. A woman’s labor pains and the pain of childbirth are consequences of the Fall. “You shall bring forth your children in pain,” was the answer the first woman received from God.

But she who did not conceive through sensual pleasure and did not conceive by the will of man—how did she give birth? She gave birth without pain. She conceived without pleasure and gave birth without suffering. That is precisely why I tell you that His conception was extraordinary, His birth was extraordinary, and the entire manner of His coming into the world was extraordinary. His conception had to be outside the ordinary manner in which a human being is conceived and born, so that He might be a new man, able to help humanity. Otherwise, He too would have needed help. This man, then—the God-Man known as Jesus Christ—has both a personal name and a title: Jesus Christ.

I am Demetrios Panagopoulos; you may be, for example, Katina Soteropoulou, or have some other name. And He has His own name and His own title. He therefore has a prehistory. We know when He would be born, where He would be born, and how He would be born—something true of no other human being. Hundreds of years before Christ, events concerning His life were recorded, and thousands of years before Christ, His Person and His whole life were prefigured. So when I find types corresponding in every respect to Jesus as far back as 1,800 years before Christ,

I am obliged to reconsider and not be so quick to reject Him merely because something does not fit my reasoning. For within Holy Scripture there are types that existed before Jesus and prefigured Him. It was not only the prophetic witness that prepared the way for Jesus: one prophet spoke, then another, and another. The Sibyls spoke—that is, the ancient oracles spoke. The philosophers also spoke; even our own Greek philosophers spoke about the coming of Jesus. This whole threefold witness came from the prophets, the

philosophers, and the Sibyls, together with certain types. All of them spoke about one and the same Person. They pointed Him out and prepared people to receive Him, because humanity was in need of salvation. And that, again, is a separate subject: why was humanity in need of salvation?

Someone may ask, “What evidence do we have concerning when He would be born?” Among the approximately forty-nine books of the Old Testament is a book written eight hundred years before Christ, the book of the Prophet Daniel. Daniel gives the specific time when Christ would be born, saying that He would come sixty-nine weeks of years after the decree was issued to restore the Temple of Solomon, which had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar.

And indeed, 483 years later—for sixty-nine times seven is 483—Christ came. We also have the Prophet Isaiah, writing 850 years before Christ, who describes the whole scene of Golgotha and its events. But he also writes that Christ would be born of a Virgin. He sees her as though in the Spirit and says, “Behold, the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel.” Emmanuel, as we have said, means “God with us.” Isaiah sees her as a Virgin, and it is a Virgin who will give birth.

Extraordinary! The place of His birth was also foretold. Perhaps you still remember from school how those distinguished men from the East, guided by the star, arrived—the men known as the Magi. When we say “Magi,” we mean educated men with, so to speak, at least four qualifications: they were astrologers, men of letters, physicians, and philosophers. At least four qualifications! By worldly standards, they were intelligent men. When they came seeking the King of the Jews, they looked for Him within the territory of the tribe of Judah. They therefore went to the king who ruled Judea, for there were twelve tribes, as you know. When the king asked the scribes and the others, “What do your writings say? Where is He to be born?” they consulted them and answered:

“Thus it is written: He will be born in Bethlehem of Judea.” It was written that He would be born there. And indeed, the prophet writes: “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.” Thus, concerning this man, Jesus, we know beforehand

three things. Consequently, He cannot be an ordinary person, since His coming was known in advance. We know when He would be born, where He would be born, and how He would be born. He is, so to speak, within our reach: we can identify Him, define Him, and point directly to Him. This is He, because we possess these three fundamental signs—how, where, and when. Nothing like this has ever happened, nor will it ever happen, with any other human being. All people, I repeat, as you yourselves know, have merely had a history from the hour of their birth until the hour they departed from this world. Yet beyond these prophecies, these three great indicators of where, how, and when this

man would be born, there are also prophecies—and I have much to say about them—concerning what would happen around this Person and how His coming would be prepared. These are fundamental points. For example, it is written by two prophets, both the Prophet Isaiah and the Prophet Malachi, that a forerunner would precede His coming. A forerunner—do you understand? The Greek word means one who goes ahead on the road. And the one road of supreme importance is the road God traveled when He came to seek out humanity.

That road had a forerunner. This forerunner was John—John the Forerunner, as you know, who was also a historical person. Let me take this opportunity to tell you that there are three forerunners. John the Forerunner is not the only one, because there are three great events concerning Christ and humanity. Christ has two appointed comings to the earth. At His First Coming, when He came among us, John was His forerunner. At His Second Coming, when He comes again, Elijah will be His forerunner. The Prophet Elijah remains alive to this day; he has not died. Another who has not died is Enoch, and there is yet another who has not died.

There are three who have not died. The Prophet Elijah will return before Christ comes again. That is why the apolytikion of the Prophet Elijah says, “The second forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ, Elijah the glorious.” We hear these words, of course, but we do not pay attention to how precisely they are expressed. Thus, John is the forerunner of the First Coming of Jesus, and Elijah is the forerunner of the Second Coming of Jesus. But there is also another road. There is not only the road by which God descends and becomes man; there is also the road by which man ascends to become god by grace. Why did God come into the world? So that humanity might return to God.

For humanity to go to God, Christ has gone ahead as the Forerunner. The very path Christ followed when He became man—He died, was buried, rose from the dead, and ascended—is the path He has appointed for every human being. And on this return of humanity to Paradise—“Grant me the longed-for homeland, making me once again a citizen of Paradise”—Christ has gone ahead as the Forerunner, because He came to restore humanity to Paradise. Paul mentions this, for those who read Holy Scripture, in the final verse of the sixth chapter of Hebrews. There are, then, three forerunners; I have mentioned this in passing. Scripture tells us that before this Person came, before the one called the Messiah came, a forerunner would first come to prepare the way.

Usually, someone goes ahead to make preparations. If a king, a president of the republic, or a prime minister is going somewhere, others go ahead and prepare for his arrival. The same thing happened when Jesus came to earth. John was six months older than Christ, because when the Archangel brought the good news to Mary, John had been in Elizabeth’s womb for six months. “Now in the sixth month Gabriel was sent to Mary.” The sixth month was counted from Elizabeth’s pregnancy. This forerunner, then, was written about 850 years before Christ. Even the manner of his preaching in the wilderness was foretold: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.” All these things were written prophetically.

And indeed, the Forerunner came, prepared a people, and baptized in the Jordan. He said of Christ, “He who comes after me,” and also, “I am not the One; I am only a lamp.” That is why, at the Little Entrance in the Church, you see someone carrying a candle in front. This represents the Forerunner. The Gospel book follows close behind and represents Christ; thus the candle symbolizes the Forerunner who came before Jesus. Everything in the Church is drawn from the life of Christ. It reenacts Christ’s thirty-three years in the world, His sacrifice, and the Ascension. If I had the opportunity to explain the Divine Liturgy to you, you would see these events portrayed there in vivid relief.

But we pay no attention because we do not know these things. For us, religion amounts to lighting a candle, and that settles the matter. Naturally, a person will know nothing—just as someone who merely walks past a university knows nothing of what is taught inside. It is exactly the same here. Concerning the Forerunner, then, prophecy says that a forerunner would precede Christ’s coming, and indeed he came. And if you enter a monastery adorned with Byzantine iconography—or if you visit Daphni, Kaisariani, or any other frescoed monastery—you will see Christ the Pantocrator at the top of the dome: Christ who upholds all things, upon whom all things depend. Then comes a circle of Angels.

Below that is another circle with the prophets, and farther down another with the Evangelists, for such is the hierarchy. But in the first circle after Christ, among the Angels, you will also see the Honorable Forerunner and the Most Holy Theotokos. The Most Holy Theotokos was also part of God’s pre-eternal plan. Before she came, we knew that she would come and what role she would fulfill, just as we knew this concerning Christ and the Honorable Forerunner. That is why the Church has placed the Forerunner there among the bodiless spirits, among the Angels. We therefore knew before Christ came that a forerunner would precede Him. Secondly, there is another prophecy which says that this God

would come at a certain time, appear upon the earth, and dwell among mankind. This was written by the Prophet Baruch, specifically in chapter 3, verse 38: “Afterward He appeared upon the earth and lived among men.” It was also prophesied that He would flee into Egypt when, as a little child, He was driven into exile. Did He not flee to escape Herod’s sword? Did God not command Him through the Angel, “Take the Child and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; I will let you know when to return”? And indeed He fled, fulfilling the prophecy of Holy Scripture, which says:

“Out of Egypt I called My Son.” The prophecy foresaw that this persecution would take place, that He would be forced to flee so that Herod could not destroy Him, and that He would return from there. This too was written concerning Him: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” There is also another prophecy declaring that His coming into the world would be God’s coming among mankind. This is what I mentioned earlier concerning Emmanuel. Emmanuel means “God with us.” It is a Hebrew word, and this is its meaning: “God with us.” There is yet another prophecy saying that He would become

the object of unjust hatred. No one has ever been hated as much as Christ. I found a prophecy concerning this, written by David in Psalm 68, verses 4–5, 1,050 years before Christ: “Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head.” Christ had done nothing to them; as the saying goes, He had not troubled anyone’s waters. If we are persecuted, we are human beings; perhaps even by the way we looked at someone, we gave that person cause to misunderstand and hate us.

It may have been something we said, our attitude, or some aspect of our behavior. But Christ, being God, never did anything of the kind. He could forestall every misunderstanding. And so the Psalm says: “Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my enemies have grown strong, those who persecute me unjustly.” He alone was persecuted without cause. And this too was written 1,050 years before Christ. In two passages it is also foretold that He would be betrayed by one close to Him. Judas belonged to His intimate circle. He lived with Him for a considerable time, and Christ made him steward of the group’s money, so as to satisfy his passion

of avarice. Christ did not deprive him of access to money. He deliberately entrusted the money to him in order to satisfy his passion of avarice. Yet Judas failed to conquer that passion and, in the end, sold Him. But there was also another Judah who sold a figure and antitype of Christ. Do you remember the twelve sons of Jacob?

Who sold Joseph? Who bargained him away? It was his brother Judah who bargained him away and sold him. In the same way, Christ was later sold by Judas. Joseph is in every respect a type of Jesus. If the opportunity arises one day, I will give you a whole lesson on this, so that you may see Christ and His life precisely prefigured in the person of Joseph. So then, it was prophesied

that He would be betrayed by someone close to Him. And indeed, He was betrayed by His disciple Judas. The Psalmist also speaks of this in Psalm 40. The price for which He would be sold is also foretold: thirty pieces of silver. The Prophet Zechariah wrote nine hundred years before Christ that He would be sold for thirty pieces of silver. He adds that this money would be returned. In other words, he foresaw that Judas would repent and return the money, which Judas did. “I have sinned,” he said, “by betraying innocent blood”; then he threw down the money.

By saying, “I have sinned,” he sought forgiveness from the scribes and Pharisees. He did not seek it from Christ. They answered him, “What is that to us? You see to it.” In other words, “What concern is that of ours? That is your affair.” The Jews, of course, had no power to forgive him. Overcome by sorrow, Judas went away and killed himself, as you know. The prophecy says that with this money they would buy the potter’s field. And indeed, the field they bought belonged to a potter. They made it a cemetery and buried strangers there. The potter’s field still exists to this day, in the place called Akeldama.

There is a monastery of Saint Onuphrius there. The soil of that field, purchased with the thirty pieces of silver—the price of Christ’s blood—is said to possess such power that anyone buried there decomposes within twenty-four hours. When Saint Helen went to the Holy Land, found the Precious Cross, and built the Church of the Resurrection, among other things, she loaded 250 ships with this soil and sent it to Rome for such purposes. Thus He would be sold for thirty pieces of silver, with which the potter’s field would be purchased—and this is exactly what happened. Matthew records it, and Zechariah foretold it nine hundred years beforehand.

Isaiah also describes what Christ would suffer: humiliation, afflictions, and finally blows to the face, among many other things. All of these came to pass. Isaiah is the prophet who, above all others, speaks like an Evangelist; indeed, the Prophet Isaiah is called the fifth Evangelist. The Evangelists wrote as historians: they witnessed the events and then recorded them. The prophets wrote through the Holy Spirit. Isaiah wrote as though the events were unfolding before him, like a historian. This fifth Evangelist saw the events of the Crucifixion. If you read Isaiah chapter 53, you will see Golgotha there: “He was numbered with the transgressors”; He had no form or beauty; and everything else that took place there. Isaiah also foretold that in His burial He would be with the rich.

Nicodemus and Joseph were those two prominent men who buried Him. Isaiah saw and recorded all this 850 years before Christ. And these things were preserved in writings belonging to Christ’s enemies; what I am reading to you was not written by Christ’s friends. If it had been, we might say that His friends fabricated these accounts to deceive us. But these things come from manuscripts that survive to this day. Even now, archaeological excavations continue to uncover evidence concerning the Bible, silencing every malicious voice. The recent discoveries at Qumran and other new finds have confirmed the truth of matters relating to Holy Scripture, and now every mouth is stopped. They can say nothing, because scientific evidence has entered the discussion. If you go to the museum in Jerusalem,

in Israel, you will find that the stones themselves speak. “If you remain silent, the stones will cry out.” Today no one can withstand the testimony of Holy Scripture. Isaiah continues, saying that He would be led like a sheep to the slaughter without uttering a complaint. Notice that he says a sheep—not some other animal, not a calf led to slaughter, but a sheep. More precisely, he says, “Like a sheep led to the slaughter, and before its shearer.” When the man who is going to shear a sheep takes hold of it, the sheep does not bleat.

It may resist a little, but it follows meekly and submits to the one who is going to shear it. This is exactly what happened with our Christ. Christ submitted willingly. They killed Christ—but what did they truly take from Him? They took, as it were, His wool; they did not take His life, just as with the sheep. The shearer takes the sheep’s wool, not its life. In the same way, although they killed Christ’s body, they could not take His spirit, for He is God. That is why He is portrayed here as a sheep led to slaughter. Christ went without protest and of His own will to be sacrificed. And Isaiah foresaw this long beforehand.

It was also written that they would give Him gall in His thirst. I do not know whether you have heard all these details. David says, “They gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” When Christ said, “I thirst,” upon the Cross, it was because blood loss from a wound produces thirst—an intense thirst. I remember from the front lines that the wounded struggled less with their pain than with their thirst. They ate snow and drank water from hoofprints and muddy hollows made by horses, even when the water was filthy and mixed with urine.

Their thirst was uncontrollable. Clearly revealing His human nature, Christ thirsted after His blood had been drained from Him. Instead of giving Him water, they dipped a sponge in vinegar and raised it to His lips. David foresaw this prophetically and recorded it 1,050 years before Christ: “They gave me gall for food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” And that is exactly what happened.

It is also foretold that they would pierce His hands and feet—that they would nail Him to the Cross. David foresaw and recorded this in Psalm 21. It was likewise foretold that He would be crucified between two criminals: “He was numbered with the transgressors.” The Prophet Isaiah wrote this 850 years before Christ. It was also revealed beforehand, before Christ came into the world, where He would begin His preaching: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people sitting in darkness have seen a great light.” Thus it was foretold that He would begin in Galilee, and indeed He came from there, as the historians, the Evangelists, later recorded. It is also foretold that He would enter Jerusalem in triumph. The Prophet Zechariah writes that He would enter riding on the colt of a donkey. He sees this prophetically,

approximately a thousand years beforehand: Christ would enter riding on the colt of a donkey. And indeed it happened. Jesus, the supreme model of patient endurance and humility, used the animal that symbolizes patient endurance and humility, so that He might be unmistakably identified. To this day, there in Bethany, one can see the place and the stone upon which He stepped to mount the donkey before entering Jerusalem. And the donkey that carried our Christ into Jerusalem afterward returned to the place from which Christ had taken it and died there.

That place has been enclosed with a wall to this day, and they have built an altar there. These things still exist; even if we wished to deny them, the events speak for themselves. And the gate in the wall of Jerusalem through which Jesus entered remains closed to this day. It is what the Jews call the Golden Gate. If you have been there, you will know it. If you have not, and God counts you worthy to go, among the other gates you will see the Golden Gate, in the enclosure of Solomon’s Temple, which covers about thirty-seven acres. You will see the Golden Gate, through which our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) entered,

when she was three years old, and remained in the Temple for eleven years, preserved from corruption. Through that gate Christ entered the Temple when He was twelve. Through it He entered on Palm Sunday. And through it, later on, Emperor Heraclius entered when he brought back the Precious Cross, having recovered it from the Persians. The gate is now closed, and the Jews say that when they went there in 1967—all their leading figures, Dayan and the others—they went and venerated there. They believe, teach as doctrine, and await the opening of this gate at the Second Coming. Take note, however, that they are still awaiting the Messiah. They do not acknowledge that He has come, nor do they accept the Christian account of responsibility for His crucifixion. He further claims that some Jewish interpreters alter the wording of our Creed. Where it says, “crucified under Pontius Pilate,” they change the Greek word meaning “in the time of Pontius Pilate” into one meaning “by Pontius Pilate.” In this reading, Pilate is made to appear as the one responsible for the crucifixion, while others are treated as uninvolved. I mention these things simply because every word that arises from our discussion opens up an entire chapter, spreading out a whole panorama before us. One could speak for ages in an effort to cover this whole range and present the complete picture.

We are uncatechized—utterly uncatechized. My God, we know nothing about matters of the faith. And so we do an injustice to Christianity, to the Gospel, and at the same time to our own soul—our own soul. Although we have read nothing, we are always ready with an answer. But how can people know what to say? A few days ago I was abroad and happened to be in a certain home, where there was a medical student. His mother said, “You know, Mr. Panagopoulos, my son has stopped going to Church.” I said, “What do you want me to do about it? Am I supposed to become his nanny and make him go to Church? What would you have me do?” Then he said to me, “Why should I go to Church? My home is my church.”

“I stay at home and say my prayers there, and so forth.” This is ignorance of the most elementary kind. How can you replace the Church with your home? Do you not know that the Church has Mysteries? Do you not know that what takes place in the Church cannot be done by you at home? Do you not know that Holy Communion is there? Do you not know that the sacred table is set there? But he knew nothing of these things. He imagined that the Church meant sitting down to listen to a Catholic liturgy on the radio or watch one on television, and that this was the Church. We are uncatechized. So when I sat down and explained to him that the Church is not that, but an entire reality into which a person must enter, he said, “We never knew these things.” “Forgive me,” I said, “for telling you all this. In any case, now we have discussed it.” People simply do not know.

That is how things stand. Everyone has fashioned a religion and a way of his own. “I am a good person; I would not step on an ant. What else do I need?” But that alone is not enough. It will not save you. The prophecy continues by saying that His preaching would be accompanied by extraordinary signs—that is, He would work miracles. These are the extraordinary signs: He would work miracles. And you know how He healed the blind and the lame, delivered those possessed by demons, and did countless other things. Stranger still, it had been prophesied that at His death nature itself would mourn. You know that darkness fell from the third hour until the ninth on the day when

Christ was crucified. You know this: darkness fell from the third hour until the ninth. This is mentioned by the Prophet Amos, 750 years before Christ: darkness would fall at high noon. At high noon there would be darkness—and darkness did fall. There was also a historian named Phlegon, who wrote that darkness occurred during the 202nd Olympiad. He recorded this darkness. It is also found in the writings of our own Saint Dionysius, called the Areopagite.

I do not know whether you are familiar with this. When Paul came to Athens and spoke specifically about the darkness that occurred at Christ’s Crucifixion, this was what caught the attention of Dionysius the Areopagite. Dionysius had recorded that darkness in his diary at the time, together with the date, and had even written, “Either the whole universe is perishing, or some God is suffering.” That was how he expressed it in his diary. Either we are perishing—that is, everything is being extinguished—or some God is suffering. “Some God is suffering.” It was not one of the twelve gods in whom they believed at the time. Rather, the true God was the One who suffered then.

Nature itself hid its light and mourned together with mankind. It concealed its rays and covered the sacrilege committed by man against his Creator. This was nature’s final outward response. It is also written that they would divide His garments. As you know, because they did not want to cut His tunic—the seamless tunic, as we call it, which our Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) had woven for Him—

as she herself had woven it.

When Lazarus became bishop in Cyprus, the Apostles sent him away there so that the Jews would not kill him. That was what happened; this was what gave him his outer garment. If they had cut the tunic—and there were four of them—each would have received one piece, and it would have been of no use to any of them. So they cast lots to decide whose it would be and who would take it. This, too, was foretold 1,050 years before Christ. David had written in Psalm 21: “They divided My garments among themselves”—that is, they divided My garments among them—“and for My clothing they cast lots.” In other words, they divided the other garments, but for My clothing, this tunic of Mine, they cast lots. And furthermore...

These things truly happened, as I have told you. Now, apart from what I have mentioned—which is only about twenty percent of the existing prophecies, selected here and there—I will tell you two or three things from our own foremost philosophers, who wrote about this Person before He came. Plato, for example, expressed it this way: “The righteous man, though he has done no wrong, will be scourged, beaten, and finally crucified.” In his book Laws and Epinomis, he writes: “When, at last, the incorporeal Divinity takes flesh among corrupt humanity...”

“This Divinity will bring deliverance from the passions. This incorporeal God will be hanged by an ungrateful people and will willingly endure every suffering.” He could have avoided them. He came to His voluntary Passion, to suffering freely embraced. Socrates said the following: “You would continue sleeping unless God, in His care for you, were to send someone to you.” We would always remain asleep, he says, unless God took pity on us and sent us someone. Elsewhere in a dialogue, he says that unless God sends someone to teach us how to pray, we will not know how to pray. And then there were those who wrote later—the Volampides, the others, the prophets...

They wrote with much light. Yet the philosophers also spoke about God before He came. And there is the following story concerning Plato. One of our would-be intellectuals accused Plato of being an atheist, an unbeliever, and so forth. Plato appeared to him in a dream and said, “Brother, why do you accuse me?” The man asked, “Who are you?” “Who am I? I am Plato, the one you accuse. I lived before Christ, and yet I wrote about Christ.” Then he showed him where he had written about Christ. “And when Christ descended below after you crucified Him above, I believed in Christ, and today I am saved.”

“Do not accuse me, and stop sinning,” he told him. That was his answer. What I have just related comes from the philosophers. I will also tell you something from the Sibyls, that is, from the pagan oracles. It says—if you have the Life of Saint Catherine, it is worth reading, especially for you women. First, she was a princess; second, she held seven degrees, which may give you some idea of what kind of person she was. She answered 150 learned men and brought them to the faith. They were all baptized and came to believe in Christ. There, then, she confronted them...

with arguments drawn from their own pagan tradition: “I believe in the One whom you proclaim in your own books, though you yourselves do not know Him.” And there she quotes a Sibyl of Cumae as writing: “At last He shall come to this much-afflicted earth.” He will come one day, she says, to this tormented earth, “without fault, and He shall become flesh.” He will become flesh—meaning that He was not flesh and would take flesh, just as Plato speaks of the incorporeal Divinity. “In the stature of Divinity, He shall free from incurable passions those who are subject to corruption, through His suffering. And against Him there shall arise murderous hatred...”

“from an unbelieving people.” An unbelieving people—the Hebrew people—would harbor envy against Him, “and He shall be raised on high like one condemned to death.” Then she continues by giving identifying details: “Then the majestic Child of God shall become man; He shall come bearing flesh and dwell on earth among mortals.” Then, she says, a great wonder will take place: the Child of God will become man and bear flesh, and He will come here to earth among mortals. “He bears four vowels.” This man’s name, she says, will have four vowels. “And two consonants.” It will also have two consonants.

Take the name “Jesus,” for example.

Jesus—that is, four vowels and two consonants. He bears four vowels and two consonants. Now someone may say, “Could we not devise another name with four vowels and two consonants?” We could. But what does she do? She supplies the corresponding numerical value of each letter. And what does she say? “Eight units, the same number of tens, and besides these, eight hundreds.” His name, she says, will have eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds. In other words, this name with four vowels and two consonants will total eight hundred and eighty-eight. Pay attention, then, to what it says here: this is ten, plus eight, plus two hundred, plus seventy, plus—how much is this? Four hundred. What is the value of upsilon? Four hundred. Plus four hundred, plus two hundred.

Two hundred, plus seventy, plus—how much is this? Four hundred. What is the value of upsilon? Four hundred, plus four hundred, plus two hundred. Do you know the total? 888. And the demons themselves say these things. The devil says them through the oracle. It is 400, 600, 800, 870, 880, 888. And what follows from this? There is no time to explain. Do you know what follows from it? What did Christ say about us Greeks, who lower ourselves to... We are ashamed even to say that we are Greeks. Yet He told us that He is the Alpha and the Omega.

He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the beginning and the end of the Greek alphabet. What other alphabet in the world has Alpha and Omega? None. And what does the Greek alphabet contain? It has eight units, eight tens, and eight hundreds: twenty-four letters.

Alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta: eight units. Iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi: eight tens. Rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega: eight hundreds. The total is 888. Do you know—do you know what we are? People do not know what we are. And we are ashamed to say good morning; we are ashamed to say thank you; we are ashamed to say that we are Greeks. If only we knew!

If we knew what Christ has done for us, who we are, what this Greek language is—and what it would mean if we lost it—and everything bound up with being Greek, we would not be ashamed. No matter how much they try to cover us over, we will rise to the surface again. In any case, I have simply given you a few points to add emphasis and inspire you to take an interest in this subject. The question of Jesus is a fundamental—an absolutely fundamental—subject. If God permits, perhaps another day we may speak further and add something more, so that we can complete this line of thought, which may be of help more generally.

φιλοσόφων, εκ μέρους των Σιβυλλών και ορισμένοι τύποι, όλοι αυτοί ομιλούσαν για το ένα και το αυτό πρόσωπο, το δαχτυλοδεικτούσαν και προετοίμαζαν τη γνώμη των ανθρώπων να Τον δεχθούν, διότι ο άνθρωπος είχε ανάγκη σωτηρίας. Κι αυτό πάλι είναι ένα ξεχωριστό κεφάλαιο: γιατί είχε ανάγκη ο άνθρωπος;

φιλαργυρίας. Δεν τον εστέρησε των χρημάτων. Επί σκοπού τού είχε δώσει τα χρήματα να του ικανοποιήσει το πάθος της φιλαργυρίας. Εντούτοις όμως αυτός δεν κατόρθωσε να νικήσει το πάθος του αυτό και στο τέλος τον επούλησε. Εδώ υπάρχει και ένας άλλος Ιούδας που πούλησε έναν αντίτυπο του Χριστού. Θυμόσαστε τα δώδεκα παιδιά του Ιακώβ;
