Summary
God grants each person additional time not by accident but as an opportunity to repent, correct spiritual faults, and prepare for death and divine judgment. The deaths of Ananias and Sapphira illustrate the spiritual gravity of lying, while the present age of grace gives sinners time to repent rather than immediate temporal punishment. Because Satan introduced the first lie to Eve in Paradise, Christians must test every message against God’s commandments, confess their own falsehoods, and cleanse the soul so Christ may dwell within it.

God has a purpose in granting us life through this present season as well. Many people think they remain alive precisely because they take care of themselves. They are mistaken. God always has a particular reason for adding time to each person’s life, and each person must take care to make good use of that time. We pass through this world only once. The ticket for the journey from here is not a return ticket. If a person loses the opportunity of this journey, it would have been better for him not to have been born.
And yet we become deeply attached to this world, as though we were going to live for a billion years, as though we would never die, as though there were no death and no judgment. The years God adds to our lives place a responsibility upon every person, whatever his age. In the face of death, we are all accountable, and we should all tremble. It is not only the elderly who are moving toward death, as some people say; death is also moving toward the young. You know how many young people are departing this life today.
They depart with their affairs unsettled, spiritually unformed and unprepared, because they believed they still had time. Satan is cunning. He has vast experience, and he knows how people behave and how to deceive them. And we, meanwhile, justify ourselves and appoint ourselves as our own judges.
We excuse all our faults, but one day we shall discover our error when we stand before that impartial Judge, before whom no excuse will be accepted. By then, however, it will be too late. We shall be unable to do anything, because we shall no longer be here as whole human beings; only our soul will stand there.
The body with which we sinned will have been laid in a grave, returned to the earth to which it belongs. And so all our excuses will come to nothing. If we wish to be called rational human beings—and especially people of the twentieth century, who imagine themselves exceptionally clever—then let us prove that we truly are. The truly clever are those who care for their immortal soul, whatever their age. Death does not come in order of age; it comes without order. And when the marble slab covers us, we shall take our spiritual deficiencies with us.
These words should not upset certain sensitive people who supposedly take great care of their lives. I would like those who take such care of their lives also to pay attention to the details of how they live, because it is in those details that they will be found guilty. Christianity is not merely a matter of broad outlines. No one can move into a house simply because the foundations have been laid, or a few columns have been raised, or several floors and concrete slabs have been put in place. It is the finishing details that make an apartment fit to enter and live in. Often everything seems to be in order, and yet a person still cannot move in and remain there.
That is because certain things are missing: the plumbing, the electricity, perhaps some of the plasterwork in the apartment. Many such small details are missing in us as well, because we concern ourselves only with the most obvious things. We often hear someone say, “As for me, Glory to God, I have killed no one, robbed no one, and I have done as much good as I could,” and perhaps we imagine that this is the whole of the Christian life. It is as though someone were saying, “I had the right to do evil, but I did not,” or, “I had the right to kill someone, but I did not; therefore God owes me something.” Let each person attend to the details. If he examines his tongue and his eyes, he will see what state they are in.
He will discover that he is not fit for Paradise. For as James, the brother of the Lord, says, “If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man.” Who among you has brought his tongue into order? Tell me, what state is your tongue in? Is it clean? Who can present his tongue before Christ and hear Christ say, “It is clean; you may go farther in”? Who among us can present his eyes before Christ and have Christ find them pure—not darkened, not cunning, not giving suggestive glances? None of us can present ourselves in this way. Yet in His love, God still bears with us and adds time to our lives so that we may become better and bring our immortal soul to completion and perfection.
Think how carefully a person attends even to the smallest detail of his appearance. He tends to his hair, looks after his clothing, has it sewn, and has a suit made for him; yet it is the soul in which he will live for eternity. Consider, then, what God has granted us the opportunity to strive for during this time. Why has He granted us passage into this new season, as we were saying? Ask Him: “My Christ, where do I still fall short? What remains for me to do?” The young man once asked the Lord, “What do I still lack?” And our good Christ led him directly to the very thing he lacked, something the young man could never have imagined. Christ will uncover many faults in us as well, and if we are willing, we shall seek to correct them, because this is the purpose of our life. Every day a person must...
...correct something, just as he does in a house, so that one day it may be completed—though a house is never entirely finished, for there is always something more it needs. Every day you add something. It is exactly the same with the house in which Christ is to dwell, the house He will come and remain in: the human soul. It must be cleansed and enriched every day, so that Christ may find room to enter, transform our life here, and prepare us for the life to come. Therefore, I say—and this is my desire—that everything heard this year, by the grace of God, may become an opportunity for correction and for putting our lives in order. I find many faults in my own tongue. I say things that are good...
...but many times I also say things that are unnecessary. Christ said, “For every idle word, I shall bring you into judgment.” In conversation you may utter words like those so many others have spoken. But He spoke seriously: “For every idle word, every word without a good purpose, I shall bring you into judgment; you will give an account to Me.” Imagine, then, if all the words that have escaped us throughout so many days of every year and so many days of our lives were gathered together. Think what an enormous cargo they would make—enough to fill entire ships—and we have never confessed them. I know we must remain realistic, and indeed we confess other details.
Yet even if we did not confess some of those details, they might cause us no harm. But we fail to confess matters about which Christ has given us a law and has told us that we shall be condemned. I would like you to follow me now as we consider the sins of the tongue. Do you ever examine your tongue to discover whether it tells lies?
If you catch it lying, what do you do? Have you ever made a firm decision to forbid it from doing so again? Have you written down this fault and confessed it? If I say that you have not, I do not think I shall be far from the truth.
Is there no law against lying?
There is the ninth commandment, which specifically says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” And did not our Christ say, as Matthew recorded, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one”? What defense can we offer before these words and before the law of God in both the Old Testament and the New Testament? There is no mouth that is not guilty of lying. And yet many years have passed, and I do not know whether any one of us has ever confessed that he lies.
That he tells lies.
I do not know whether anyone has ever said to his confessor, “You know, Father, I have become an instrument of Satan. Satan lies, and at various times and in various circumstances he uses my mouth, so that lies are heard from my lips.” Is this not true? You know that it is. Unfortunately, these things pass unnoticed. Why they pass unnoticed, I do not know. Satan has lulled us to sleep, even though this is a commandment just as surely as “You shall not murder,” “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not steal,” and “You shall not bear false witness.” This commandment, too, belongs to the law of God. Will God not call us to account for it?
Who is it that uses the mouth God gave us for evil and makes it speak lies—Christ or the devil? And how greatly your mouth is defiled by that cloven-hoofed one, the devil! Why did you not mention this to the priest in your confession, so that your mouth might be cleansed? What did the Apostle Peter say to Ananias, as we read in the fifth chapter of Acts? He said to him, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart, so that you lied to the Holy Spirit and said that you received this much money from the field, when in fact you received a different amount?” Satan was the source of that lie...
...but he spoke it through Ananias’s tongue. And what was the result? The Holy Spirit struck Ananias dead, and they carried him away. A little later, the Holy Spirit also struck dead his wife, Sapphira, who came and repeated the same lies, following in her husband’s footsteps, and they carried her away as well. Today God does not strike us dead when we lie, blaspheme, commit adultery, or steal. He does not kill us. Yet Satan kills us spiritually. God knows that we live in the age of grace, not in the age of the Law, and He leaves us time and gives us an opportunity to practice metanoia, to repent and return. And yet lying is a sin that festers and spreads without...
...most people even realizing it. It circulates among us to a shocking degree. I hope my words are missing their mark, but I do not believe they are. Many of us are guilty of this and have failed to notice it. Since we have now entered this new year and this new spiritual season, pay attention to it this year. Strive to cast out whatever old habits remain within you. Once you have recognized them, take care not to fall into them again. And if you do fall, always keep the fault in mind and confess it, because one day you will stand face-to-face with Christ.
Many people do not understand how serious this is, and at every moment you hear every kind of oath—lies, rather, backed up by oaths. People swear by their children, by their eyes, by the bones of their parents. Why do you swear? Do you swear by God? And they swear falsely. If what you say is true, why is there any need to swear? The truth speaks for itself. To cover up your lie, you put your children at risk; you put your honor at risk. “Upon my honor, I swear...”
Thank you.
People see those other two aspects without being able to grasp what is happening. They swear; they invoke saints, saying, “By Saint so-and-so”; they swear by their own soul—and behind all of this lies a falsehood. To cover up the lie, they parade a whole succession of holy persons, holy things, and precious things before you. They use them to conceal the lie, because, as I said, the truth shines by itself. Yet all this passes unnoticed, and they have never confessed these things.
They come to the surface. And falsehood takes many forms.
There are many forms that serve falsehood. First there is the liar who tells a lie directly, one of his own making. He is a liar; he has been telling lies since infancy. Then there are others who circulate a lie without having invented it themselves. They heard it from someone else, and they pass the lie on. These are peddlers of falsehood. They repeat what was said and spread it as news. There is also another kind: those who lie in jest.
While talking endlessly about all sorts of things, they tell a million lies to make others laugh, to gain esteem, and to appear clever. None of this has anything to do with God. It belongs entirely to Satan and never to God. The most precious things—the human tongue and the human nous, the spiritual intellect—are being used to serve what? Things that benefit Satan and make people cackle with laughter. A person must be sober-minded and serious, always thoughtful. He should be like a full ear of wheat, bowed down by its weight, not standing straight upright; the upright ear is empty.
It has nothing in it. These people may be called lying idle-talkers. They lie with idle, useless, showy words that benefit no one. There are many such people, telling tall tales, making obscene jokes, using foul language, and inventing stories out of nothing. We shall give an account for all these lies they reel off and for the time they waste. Others are liars in another way: they readily promise to help, promise to give something, promise to be present, promise to do or make something, and so forth. Then, even in matters that are not difficult, they go back on their word.
They do so simply because their character is unstable. They have no character at all. They lack what we call keeping one’s word. “Have you no word of honor?” They do not care. You relied on their word and held on to their promise. You took no action because they deceived you into believing that they would act. They made you a promise, then failed you and left you hanging in the air. There are many such people in society. They are false promisers: they make false assurances and false promises. So among the people around us today, there are many categories of liars and peddlers of falsehood.
One man invents a lie, shapes it, and fashions it in his own way. He is what we might call a fabricator of falsehood. Another uses lies to accuse someone; he is a slanderer. Is it not a lie when you falsely accuse another person? If you tell a lie without accusing anyone else—for example, if you say, “I was in Patras yesterday, and hailstones this large fell”—it is a lie, but the subject is merely hail. But when I tell a lie that accuses another person who has done nothing, then I am falsely accusing him. That man is a slanderer, one who slanders others. “What did he do?” or “His girlfriend did this,” or “His wife did that,” or “Her husband did this with another woman.” He puts forward a slanderous accusation.
In the first case, I say that hailstones this large fell, and it is untrue; it is still a lie. But the other case is slander, because I lie specifically about a person and malign that person. Another gives false testimony in court or in discussions, when someone calls upon him as a witness, and so forth. He is a false witness. Think, then, how many such types a person may encounter in the environment in which he lives. He will meet peddlers of lies, idle-talkers, lying idle-talkers, false promisers, fabricators of falsehood, slanderers, and false witnesses.
Thank you.
Scripture. If we tried to sort through all this, we would scarcely find anyone whose tongue was clean. To a greater or lesser degree, through the various means and methods Satan uses against us, and through our own carelessness, he has us in his grasp, and we pay him tribute—you can understand what I mean. And I tell you that, out of a hundred Christians who go to confession, scarcely one or two will accuse their own tongue before their confessor and say, “I tell lies. Satan uses my tongue.” For he is the first liar. He tells lies; Christ does not. There are two persons whom people may follow.
Christ or the devil. “He who is not with us is against us,” and, “He who is not against us is for us,” says Christ. There is no middle ground. Wherever you turn today, you will find falsehood above all else. But we should not expect the same from a Christian. Go to the marketplace, and falsehood rules. The merchant uses false weights. He falsely states the price so that afterward he can appear to lower it. He measures falsely. In other words, the marketplace today conducts all its business through falsehood. The same is true in the workshops. Go and order something.
There will be falsehood in the transaction. You will not hear honesty, except in a few cases. Falsehood circulates within homes as well—even between husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters. Truth does not reign even in those homes. If you go to palaces and rise among the powerful, you will find falsehood there too, perhaps even more of it, because flattery is needed if you are to maintain your position. Without flattery and slander, you cannot remain in those high positions or gain entry through those great doors. They are regarded as indispensable aids.
Falsehood is present in the courts. Is there any courtroom without lies? Who goes there and tells the truth? Can you face the truth when the truth is not on your side? Yet you must face it, and so you lie. You either add something or leave something out. And this is apart from the false witnesses who are paid.
For payment, or out of revenge, they lie so that a judgment may be awarded to someone who has no rightful claim. But falsehood does not stop there. It advances even as far as the Holy Altar, even into the sanctuary and among the clergy, both higher and lower.
Although the commandment is that a priest’s lips must not lie, at times even priests are caught speaking falsely. Of course, there are exceptions in every case, and we must not speak in absolutes. But generally speaking, falsehood rules today. We live in an age of lying, scheming, and deceit. A lie comes out of one mouth and then circulates through millions of mouths.
One person passes it to another, adding his own sauce, whipped cream, and a cherry on top—or trimming it down to size, as the case may be. He serves it however and wherever he wishes, presenting it as the truth.
Falsehood is not only spoken; it is written and printed, and lies are read. Falsehood is everywhere, yet there has never been any serious discussion about it. Have you ever heard a discussion about lying? It passes unnoticed. It creeps and creeps—from the palace to the holy church, to the marketplace, to the home, and on and on. Everything is being covered over with falsehood. And the sorrowful thing is that, although other sins also prevail and circulate among us...
When some other fault arises, we sometimes seize it by the ear, so to speak, and drag it to our spiritual father: “Here, I bring it to you; it did this and that.” But falsehood is never brought to our spiritual father. Sometimes we tell a little child that we will put pepper on his tongue because he tells lies. Yet we put no pepper on our own tongue. The child may tell some small lie about eating a sweet, going outside to play when his mother or father told him to study, or taking a drachma to buy some Turkish delight or a piece of candy. He may tell lies, but these are mere trifles compared with the lies told by his father and mother.
We excuse our own lies, but we do not excuse the child’s, nor do we pay attention to our own. Wherever you go today, falsehood is present. And where falsehood is present, the devil is present. Where the devil is speaking falsehood, Christ is absent. Do we understand this? This is the point I want to reach: we deceive ourselves into thinking that we are Christians, when in reality we are not, so long as this sin called falsehood creeps within us. You see, it goes throughout the whole world, causing harm.
It harms the one who tells it and injures the one who hears it, because the person who listens to a lie is also harmed. You cannot be benefited by falsehood. And the person who lies, and therefore transgresses the law of God, will one day be punished. It is impossible for him not to be punished. He is obliged to do what God says. Many times we promise many things and in the end prove to be liars. You remember how Pharaoh, under pressure, promised three times to let the Hebrew people go, and all three times he lied. Whenever things became unbearable for him...
When frogs covered the whole of Egypt, when swarms of flies overran the palaces and afflicted everyone there, and when blood covered Egypt, he made promises. But afterward he lied. And what was the result of his conduct? He perished there in the Red Sea. These are the consequences for everyone who tells lies. Remember also Gehazi, who was questioned after taking the garments and the money from Naaman the Syrian. “Where were you, Gehazi?” the elder Elisha asked him. “I was here.” “The leprosy of Naaman the Syrian,” Elisha told him, “will come upon you...”
And upon three generations.” Gehazi went away from his presence white as snow, because he had lied; he had gone and taken those things. Today we do not become leprous outwardly, but we become leprous inwardly, just as Miriam, the sister of Moses, became leprous after speaking against him. Today God does not compel us. He does not cut off noses or ears, nor does He inflict outward leprosy so that we are forced to become good. No. He wants each person to understand and to act for himself. Why am I speaking about falsehood? Someone may ask me: Who brought this lie into being? Who told the first lie, and where was the first lie told?
The first lie was told by the devil in Paradise, specifically to Eve. She was the first person to whom he spoke a lie.
If you have read the Old Testament, you will remember Eve’s answer when Satan asked her, “Did God really tell you not to eat any of the things that are here?” Unsuspectingly, she replied, “He told us that we may eat from all of them. Only from this tree here did He tell us not to eat, because on the day we eat from it, we shall surely die—even a twofold death. ‘Dying, you shall die,’ He told us.” It was precisely then that the serpent said to the woman, “You shall not surely die.” God says, “You will die,” while Satan says, “God is lying; you will not die.”
One of the two is lying: God or the devil. It is the devil who lies. “For God knows that on the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.” He says that it is out of envy and jealousy that God does not let you eat from it: “Your eyes will be opened, and you yourselves will become gods.” Did they become gods? They did not. So he is a liar; he deceived the human race. They believed the lie and thought they had found an easy way to become gods quickly by eating, but they achieved exactly the opposite. The first liar, then, is Satan.
For this reason, anyone who lies today serves Satan and walks in Satan’s footsteps. He becomes an instrument of Satan. Satan uses his mouth, his heart, his tongue, and his nous—the spiritual intellect—to devise and fashion whatever he can against God and against other people. Therefore, if a person has not understood this until now, he must take care to think before opening his mouth. There are difficult circumstances, of course, because sometimes a person is driven by necessity to tell a lie. But these are exceptional cases. I will say something about that later.
The first one who told a lie, and the originator of falsehood, is Satan. This happened in Paradise itself, when there were God, Satan, and the first couple, Adam and Eve. The author of the Apocalypse, in chapter 12, verse 9, writes: “And the dragon was cast out, that great serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” He was cast out...
Satan, it says—the dragon, the serpent of old, the devil. Therefore, that serpent was Satan. Remember that Satan used the serpent, and Holy Scripture says that the serpent was the most cunning of the animals. In other words, he used an animal that would arouse no suspicion in order to deceive. “I would never have expected it from you.” In this same way, even to this day, deception succeeds in serving sin to all people. So we must not look at where the message comes from or how it is presented to us.
If what we are told is contrary to God’s commandment, we are obliged to reject it. Even if a Saint says it, we will not accept it if it is contrary to God’s commandment. In this case, Satan clothed himself in the serpent in order to deceive the first human beings, leaving us an example. The commandment was: “Do not eat.” Now the cleverest creature tells you otherwise, and you are guilty if you listen. The creature cannot be wiser than the Creator. The Creator is the One who made the creature. Put the two before you and consider them both: Whom shall I obey—you, or the One who made you?
The One who made both you and me told me not to eat, because if I do, I shall surely die. How can you come and contradict the One who made me, telling me that He envies me and will not let me eat because, if I do, I shall become God? This is how a person is deceived when he does not pay attention to the words of God. God has said that a person will be brought to judgment for every idle word. How much more, then, when He has said, “You shall not bear false witness,” so that your mouth may never be used in Satan’s work—not even to tell a lie as a joke? How can you remain unconcerned? How many lies have you told? Before God, how many lies have you told?
How many lies have you told for various other reasons, or to conceal certain situations? How is this possible? How often do people lie while supposedly trying to do something good? At every moment they are doing harm. Go into the schools and see what the students do. They lie to cover for their friends, boys or girls, who are heading toward destruction. They lie. “Elenitsa, did you see Katina?” “Yes, of course; she was at school.” But Katina was at her house, and Elenitsa knows that she was there. “We were together,” she says, and she lies. Through her lie, she helps her friend on the road to destruction. The same thing happens elsewhere.
The same thing happens with a neighbor, with a girlfriend, with a boyfriend, and so on. If a person reflected on the harm caused by these situations and on how many people are left hanging in uncertainty, he would feel like throwing himself into the sea today. Do you know how much damage has been caused by our foolishness and by the lies we have told—lies that we regard as necessary, even imagining that we are obliged to tell them and are actually doing good? The most satanic part is that we even imagine we are doing good. We might as well ask them to raise a statue in our honor because we held the umbrella over them while they were corrupted and destroyed. Humanity would not be what it is, nor would it be in such a wretched condition, if there were upright people who said, “I cannot say that.”
“It is impossible for me to say it. Do not involve me. If I am asked, I will tell the truth, whether you like it or not. Take whatever precautions you need.” There can be no “but.” Here is your friend, here is your soul, and there are you. Two against one—we win. Do we understand this? Unfortunately, this is what we refuse to understand. Many people have given judgments on this matter and spoken many wise words about why a person must not lie and about the harm that lies cause. Listen to a few of them: “When you think of a liar, understand him to be none other than the slanderer.”
Saint Basil the Great says this: do not think of the liar as anything other than the slanderer. When you see a liar, he says, see the devil standing before you. Let the devil immediately come to mind, for he is the slanderer. He slandered God before the human race and told them that God is jealous and envious and therefore does not allow them this or that. And once again, this brought about the consequences that followed. “The Lord shall destroy all who speak falsehood.” The Lord shall destroy—all who speak falsehood. He will make no exception. These words were written by God’s Spirit-bearing Psalmist.
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.” When He sees lips that speak lies, they are an abomination. Do you know what “abomination” means? Something loathsome. Even if we receive Holy Communion, venerate the icons, or perform various supposed religious duties, if those lips have not been cleansed through metanoia—repentance—through confession, and through a corresponding correction of life, how can they be acceptable in God’s sight? They are an abomination, as it says here. “The liar is rightly called a deceiver and a perjurer.” A liar is a deceiver, even if he wears a necktie.
He may be a fine gentleman or an elegant lady, but he is still a deceiver and a perjurer.
Saint Basil the Great says, “The liar is rightly called a deceiver and a perjurer.” He deceives you, because through falsehood he wages war against you. “Falsehood is the final limit of wickedness.” You commit every kind of swindle, fraud, and dishonorable act, and in the end you find a lie to cover them all. You lie to your husband, your wife, your neighbor, your priest, and everyone else. In other words, you take the devil’s instrument—falsehood—to cover what? The other sins fashioned by the devil. How could such a thing possibly bring about anything good?
God does not want these things, and He always brings them to light. This is why, as you see, lies do not endure for long. God will always vindicate the person who has been wronged by a lie. God will reward him; God will raise him up. Let your poisoned, lying mouth slander him; place your hand on the Gospel and swear falsely so as to have him condemned and harmed—God will raise him up. Consider what the corrupt wife of Potiphar said about Joseph. Remember what she said about him. She wanted Joseph, the all-comely Joseph, to sleep with her, but Joseph refused.
Joseph said, “They are entrusted to me. I manage them, madam. My master knows nothing about what money or food he has—nothing. Everything is in my hands, and I may manage it all. But you are the one exception; I have no authority over you. You are a foolish, corrupt woman, and you belong to him. Besides, how could I do such a thing before my God?” Even as a captive in Egypt, he kept God before his eyes. She could not get hold of him and satisfy her desire. One day, when no one else was there, she seized him as he passed by. The young man would not give in. She grasped his garment and pulled off his coat.
He left his coat in her hands. What did that furious woman do? She kept it. At midday, when her husband came home, she said, “Look what this scoundrel you brought here tried to do to me today! I could not hold him; I managed to keep only his coat. He threw himself at me.” She invented a lie, though exactly the opposite had happened. Her husband believed her, for how could he imagine that the truth was entirely the reverse? The coat she had taken from Joseph served as her evidence. So he seized the young man and put him in the innermost prison, among those serving the harshest sentences. Yet Holy Scripture says, “The Lord was with him and poured out mercy upon him.”
The Lord eased his pain as He looked upon this injustice. And in the end, He inspired Pharaoh’s dreams and all that followed, and Joseph became second only to Pharaoh. Through her lie, cunning, and shamelessness, that woman condemned him to death, yet he rose to become second only to Pharaoh. This is God. This is God. But we ourselves are not always clean. Yes, others accuse and slander us, but we are not clean either; we too have our own filth. If we were clean, those who slander us would be exposed sooner, and the truth would become clear in such cases. This is why we do not see cases like this today. So, as I said earlier,
someone may ask, “Must we always say simply yes or no? Is there never a time when we may say something else? Is there ever a time when we may tell a lie—when it is even necessary to do so?” There are certain cases, but not in the way we commonly use lies. One teaching concerning falsehood says: “At times even a lie may be good, when it benefits the one who tells it and does no harm to the one who hears it.” That is, when it benefits the speaker without harming anyone else. Suppose a father comes home drunk.
He is raging against his daughter, calling her a prostitute and threatening to slaughter her with a knife. Is the mother supposed to say, “She is here inside, so that you can come in and kill her with a knife”? No. She will say, “She is not here; she has gone to her lessons, to school.” To prevent the greater evil—a murder that cannot be undone—she is compelled to lie. Do you understand? That is the kind of case we mean. Some people say, “There, do you not see that Saint Dionysios told a lie?” If Saint Dionysios lied and hid his brother’s murderer, then go and do the same yourselves—go ahead, and you too will become saints! He hid the man who had murdered his brother. When the authorities came and asked for him, the Saint said, “He did not pass this way,” though he had hidden him. They believed that the man was not there, because the Saint had never lied before, and the authorities knew that
this man did not tell lies. If he now told them, “He is not here,” then he was not there. So they left, giving the Saint an opportunity to help the murderer escape. “Go,” he told him, “and practice metanoia—repent.” Even while the man was in hiding, the Saint pleaded with him to repent. For this reason, the people of Zakynthos inscribed these words upon his holy reliquary: “He lied for the first time and lost his virginity, yet the sinless one was becoming holy at the very moment he sinned.” That is what they inscribed. For the first time he lied, and so lost the virginity of his truthfulness. Yet the sinless one was becoming holy at that very hour, at the very moment he sinned. I do not know whether these things have edified you tonight. I have said them.
If you think they can benefit you and that you need them, hold on to something from what you have heard. You may be edified. And I pray to the holy God that your tongue may be found clean from every stain, and especially from the stain of falsehood.

Αν δεν τις εξομολογηθούμε, δεν είναι ζημιά. Δεν εξομολογούμεθα όμως για θέματα για τα οποία έχει ο Χριστός νόμον και μας έχει πει ότι θα κατακριθούμε. Θα ήθελα και εσείς να με παρακολουθήσετε στην πτώση της γλώσσης. Δεν εξετάζετε ποτέ να βρείτε αν η γλώσσα σας ψεύδεται;
Δεν υπάρχει νόμος κατά του ψεύδους;
Δεν ξέρω εάν έχει πει ποτέ στον εξομολόγο του ότι, «Ξέρεις, πάτερ μου, όργανο του Σατανά έγινα και αυτός ψεύδεται και χρησιμοποιεί το στόμα μου κατά διαφόρους εποχές και κατά διαφόρους περιπτώσεις και ακούγονται ψέματα από το στόμα μου». Δεν είναι αλήθεια; Το ξέρετε αυτό. Περνούνε απαρατήρητα, δυστυχώς. Τώρα γιατί περνούνε απαρατήρητα, δεν ξέρω. Μας έχει αποκοιμίσει ο Σατανάς, εφόσον υπάρχει εντολή, όπως είναι το «οὐ φονεύσεις», το «οὐ μοιχεύσεις», το «οὐ κλέψεις», το «οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις». Είναι και αυτό μέσα στον νόμο του Θεού. Δεν θα ζητήσει λοιπόν ο Θεός γι’ αυτό;
Και τας τρεις γενεάς, και βγήκε ολόλευκος από μπροστά του, γιατί εψεύσθη· είχε πάει, είχε πάρει. Σήμερα δεν λεπρωνόμεθα εξωτερικώς, αλλά εσωτερικώς λεπρωνόμεθα, όπως λεπρώθηκε η Μαριάμ, η αδελφή του Μωσέως, η οποία κατηγόρησε. Δεν εκβιάζει σήμερα ο Θεός, ούτε μύτες κόβει, ούτε αυτιά, ούτε λέπρα δίδει εξωτερικώς, ώστε με το ζόρι να γίνουμε καλοί. Όχι. Θέλει να το καταλάβει ο καθένας και να το ενεργήσει ο καθένας. Γιατί μιλάω για ψέμα; Ίσως να με ρωτήσει κάποιος: ποιος το έβγαλε αυτό το ψέμα; Ποιος πρώτος είπε το ψέμα και πού πρώτα ελέχθη το ψέμα;
Αυτό που μας λένε, αν είναι αντίθετο με την εντολή του Θεού, εμείς είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να το αρνηθούμε. Άγιος αν το λέει, δεν θα το δεχτούμε, εφόσον είναι αντίθετο με την εντολή του Θεού. Εν προκειμένω ο σατανάς ενεδύθη τον όφιν για να ξεγελάσει τους πρώτους ανθρώπους και άφησε ένα παράδειγμα για μας: ότι εντολή είναι το να μην φάτε. Τώρα σας το λέει το φρονιμότερο πλάσμα, είστε ένοχοι. Δεν μπορεί να είναι φρονιμότερο το πλάσμα από τον πλάστην. Ο πλάστης είναι αυτός που έκαμε και το πλάσμα. Βάλ' τα λοιπόν και τα δύο στη μέση και συζήτησε μαζί τους. Ποιον θα ακούσω, εσένα ή εκείνον που σε έφτιαξε;
Που σε έφτιαξε και εσένα και εμένα, μου είπε να μην φάω, διότι θα αποθάνω μάλιστα. Πώς εσύ έρχεσαι να μου διαψεύσεις εκείνον που με έφτιαξε και να μου πεις ότι με ζηλεύει και δεν με αφήνει να φάω, διότι αν φάω θα γίνω Θεός; Έτσι πλανάται ο άνθρωπος, μη προσέχοντας στα λόγια του Θεού. Πόσο λοιπόν ο Θεός έχει πει ότι για κάθε λόγον αργόν τον άνθρωπο θα τον φέρει σε κρίση, πόσο μάλλον έχει πει «ου ψευδομαρτυρήσεις», να μην χρησιμοποιηθεί το στόμα σου καθόλου στο έργο του σατανά, ούτε για αστείο να μην πεις. Πώς είναι δυνατόν να μένεις ξένοιαστος; Πόσα, πόσα ψέματα έχεις πει; Παρ' εις θεότητος, πόσα ψέματα έχεις πει;
