Summary
The lecture presents Jonah as a warning against judging God’s commands by limited human reason instead of responding with faith and obedience. Religious donations, vows, and outward offerings cannot substitute for sincere repentance, confession, and a changed life. The lecture concludes that conscience warns against disobedience, but repeatedly silencing it leaves the soul spiritually insensitive and exposed to judgment.

Once again we turn to the Old Testament, and again to a prophet whose teaching is of great importance for those who truly want to discover themselves and stop deceiving themselves. Many people subject matters of faith to human reason. But Christianity and human reason are two opposing things.
This is precisely where faith is needed: to bridge the two. When God speaks and commands, man cannot ask, “Why?” God has called the believer to follow behind Him, if he wishes—not to go before Him or walk beside Him. God does not want man as His guide, nor does He seek to discuss matters with him and ask his opinion. “If anyone desires to come after Me”—whoever wishes. He compels no one. You have seen how the churches of Christ are built: they have one door for people to enter and two through which they can leave. And if you include the doors of the sanctuary, there are three or four. If you want to stay, you stay. If you want to listen, you listen. If you want to accept what you hear, you accept it. He forces no one. He simply offers it to you.
The moment a person subjects the things God has commanded to his own reasoning, he makes himself ridiculous. Man has not solved a single one of the mysteries surrounding him; how, then, could he possibly search out the counsel of God? The account I shall speak about this evening has precisely this character and gives us this answer. You have surely heard that among the Twelve Minor Prophets there is a prophet named Jonah. It is about him that we shall speak. Listen to what it says: “Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying...”
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. God tells him, “Go and preach here,” and Jonah goes down to leave for Spain, because Tarshish is in what is now Spain.
He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. He paid the fare and boarded it, intending to sail with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord—to flee from God. Yet is it not flattering to be an instrument of God’s work, to be God’s messenger? As the prophet says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who proclaim peace, who bring glad tidings of good things.” Why, then, does Jonah flee from the presence of God? The reason is given later. What had God told him to preach? Do you know? He was to tell them, “Three days more, and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” Jonah subjected this command to his own reasoning.
He thought, “If I were to go and tell them, ‘Unless you repent, I will destroy you,’ that would make sense. But why should I go and tell them, ‘In three days I will destroy you’? Why tell them at all? So that they can prepare themselves? Set out somewhere else? Wash themselves? What would be the point?” He subjected it to his own reasoning. And then he thought, “If I preach to them, they may repent. And if they repent, God will not destroy them. Then what will happen? I will appear to be a false prophet and ruin my reputation. So I had better flee.” See where human reasoning leads, and how fine it seems! Jonah himself says this later: “Was this not why I fled? You tell me to go and say that in so many days You will destroy Nineveh.” It did not seem reasonable to him.
“If I were going to tell them, ‘Unless you repent, He will destroy you,’ I could understand going.” And so he flees from the presence of God. Where will you go, Jonah? Where is there any place in which God is not present, that you should flee from His presence? This question is not only about Jonah, nor is Jonah alone made to look foolish by it. It also applies to the many Jonahs of our own day, who hide while committing their crooked deeds so that the world will not learn of them, see them, or hear about them. They remove this, erase that, and so forth. Where can you go and not have the eye of God before you? What could you do or say that God would not hear? What could you contrive that God would not see and record?
In the early churches, above the Holy Doors, they used to paint an ear, an eye, and a pen, so that people would always see them and not deceive themselves: God sees everything, hears everything, and records everything. Where will you go, Jonah? You boarded the boat and are fleeing from the presence of the Lord. But God is there as well.
And what was the outcome? “But the Lord raised up a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was in danger of being broken apart.” The sea had been so calm and the journey so pleasant. Then, suddenly, the Lord of the wind acted—for some people imagine...
They imagine that the elements of nature move on their own, rebel, and do whatever they please. No. They have a Master, and they obey His commands. This account contains many signs demonstrating that there is a Master, that providence governs everything, and that everything is ordered with purpose. The command is given: “You are fleeing from My presence, are you? Wind!” And suddenly the journey becomes difficult; the ship can go no farther. The sea became so violent that they were forced to jettison the cargo, as the passage goes on to say: “Then the sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god.” They were idolaters, and each believed in his own god.
“And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten it.” They jettisoned the cargo, as sailors say. They threw out food, sacks, and luggage. The vessel was already half sinking, and they cast things overboard so that it might remain afloat as long as possible. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The text says that he became utterly sluggish and heedless. While Jonah slept below in the hold, the others above were perishing. Who was the cause of all this misery? Why was there a storm? Why was the wind against them? Why was the ship in danger? Who was the cause? Jonah.
Yet he was asleep, without even considering that he himself was the cause. Now think of every person as a little vessel, a boat, a ship sailing through life. It encounters foul weather, often has to jettison many things along the way, and sometimes is even wrecked, yet no one looks for the cause. We say, “It was a coincidence. It was bad luck. These things happen in the world. We are only human.” None of this is true; these are all falsehoods. In every misfortune there is always a Jonah, and we must seek out who that Jonah is. And when Jonah is found...
When we throw Jonah into the sea, we will stop throwing our little sacks, our larger sacks, and our mattresses overboard. That is the outcome. Consider how many people are in this position—both in Jonah’s place and in the place of those sailing with him. They try all sorts of other ways to regain their balance and keep from drowning, without ever discovering the true cause. Then the captain approached Jonah, found him asleep, and said, “Why are you sleeping? Arise and call upon your God. Perhaps God will remember us, so that we do not perish. All of us have cried out to our own gods; now you must get up.” Then each man said to his neighbor...
“Come, let us cast lots, so that we may learn on whose account this evil has come upon us.” They were also superstitious, so they cast lots to find out, as we would say, who had brought them bad luck and who was responsible for this whole tempest that threatened to destroy them even within the harbor. And what happened? “They cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.” Then they said to him, “Tell us now: on whose account has this evil come upon us? What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?” Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him...
“What is this that you have done?” And they asked him, “What shall we do with you, so that the sea may become calm for us?” For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. He answered them, “Take me up and throw me into the sea, and the sea will become calm for you, because I know that this great tempest has come upon you because of me.” But when the men heard that he was a man of God, they were afraid to throw him into the sea, lest God hold them accountable. So what did they do? They turned the oars and tried to row back to land, intending to put him ashore where they had taken him aboard. But the wind began blowing from the shore toward the open sea.
So they could not reach the shore. When they tried to sail farther out, the wind blew against them from ahead; when they tried to return, it blew outward from the land. Thus they could go nowhere. This is a great lesson. We seek our own ways, but Christ requires His way. He accepts no compromise. Whatever else we may jettison, it is the sin He wants. The sin—that is what He wants. When the sin, when Jonah, is cast into the sea, everything will become calm. The passage goes on to say that when they saw they could not reach the shore, could do nothing more, and were about to drown, they seized Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea became calm. Do you know what the sea represents? Christ—the boundless sea that receives...
The Jonahs. But you must throw Jonah into it. “Take me up,” he says, “and throw me in.” Why not jump in by yourself, if that is what must be done? This detail has meaning. Sin is something you must take up; it will not fall away by itself. You must take it and cast it into the mercy of God. You must cast it into God’s sea, into the boundless ocean of God, and then everything will change. Sadly, we may wish to remove Jonah—the cause of humanity’s misery, the cause of misery in the family, in the individual, and in everything else. That Jonah is sin, which remains hidden within and says nothing at all so long as you do not disturb it. Instead, you may...
You may make various other sacrifices. A man may be living in an unlawful relationship while also baking an offering for Saint Phanourios. A couple may be unable to have children while also donating money for the Holy Altar of the Church. They jettison a few things, but not Jonah—not the sin. That is what must stop. The unlawful bed must be broken up. The illicit affair must end. The other person must be shut out. Sin must be shut out, if you want things to become calm. This is truly no laughing matter. Christ accepts no compromise, and no one can prevail against Christ. A person may sit and coolly philosophize about what methods he can use to escape Christ, so that he can continue committing the sin while still reaching some compromise with Him. But I see that Christ does not compromise. He is long-suffering. He waits for the person.
The person must withdraw from the sin. Christ does not bring the sinful arrangement to an end Himself; the person continues it. There can be no compromise. Votive offerings will not do, nor donations, nor any other gifts; neither monasteries, nor lamps we have paid for, nor collections, nor anything else we may choose to do. As long as Jonah remains within—as long as sin remains within—Christ accepts no compromise. Therefore, search the depths of your soul and find the sin. There are many sins—so very many—of which people have not repented and which they have not confessed. Some people bring their sins before their eyes and recognize them, yet still keep them, as though they were holding foreign currency until its value rises, or had secured an investment so their money would not be at risk. These are not idle words. Christ...
His Mystery of repentance and confession is a boundless sea—not merely the Gulf of Corinth, the South Euboean Gulf, the Ionian Sea, or the Aegean Sea, but the Pacific Ocean. A person’s sins are like a mass of burning coals, whatever their size and quantity. The ocean can extinguish ten, twenty, a hundred, or a thousand such heaps. Even if our sins were a whole mountain the size of Olympus, the Urals, or the Alps, the ocean could extinguish them, provided that we cast them in. We need only take them up and throw them into it. If we refuse to cast them in, He will not come and take them from us. He respects our freedom.
What did I say? In a certain sense, human free will is stronger even than the Holy Trinity. This is, of course, a figure of speech. I am putting it strongly so that you may understand. God, who can destroy all the worlds—both those visible to us and those invisible to us—in a fraction of a second, in the blink of an eye, and create a million times more in another fraction of a second, cannot create the human will. The human person must come to Him and offer that will freely. After all, there is nothing else that man can offer: his sins, his prayers, and his willing consent. Everything else that he imagines he is giving or accomplishing already belongs to God.
It belongs to God. Yet a person would rather bring a can of oil to the Church than go to confession and change his life. The oil comes from Christ’s olive trees. He does not need it; it is already His. A person brings Him a candle as pure and clear as ice, but its wax comes from His beehives. That does not move Him either. He covers an icon with gold, but the gold is His. He builds Him a new church, but the bricks and stones are His as well. And God is in no danger of being left outdoors; He needs no shelter from the sun, the wind, or the rain. God wants something that is truly yours and truly mine. And what does man produce from morning until night and from night until morning? Sins—nothing else. If you read from Genesis to the Apocalypse, you will find nowhere else the words, ‘There is joy among you over one sinner who repents.’ When a person repents, takes his sins, and casts them into the sea of repentance and confession, Satan shrivels down to almost nothing.
Satan grieves and shrieks, while that person’s angel stands tall in Heaven; Heaven rejoices, and all the other angels rejoice as well. They knew that, for one reason or another, Satan had a claim upon that person. For every sin that remains unconfessed is a share held by Satan, and he will produce it as evidence on the final day. Then Christ cannot tell him, ‘You are unjust.’ Satan will say, ‘How can You deny me justice? Does this person not belong to me? Did he not do this, at that time, with this person and that person, in this way and in that way?’ A thousand schemes, a thousand deceptions—in matters of property, worldly affairs, the flesh, personal honor, and countless other things. The certificates of debt remain hidden, while we keep throwing cargo overboard: giving money from our wallets to charity, to the poor, and to the Church, and so forth. But God will not therefore say, ‘This man is good.’
He remains under God’s wrath, and God waits for Jonah to be cast into the sea. Why do we deceive ourselves? Whatever else we may have here, if sins remain alongside it, then we have given nothing. If we want these offerings to be secured, to acquire real value, and to be credited to our account in eternity, we must first settle the matter of our sins. Sins cannot be paid off. They do not rot away, become educated, or expire under any statute of limitations. They must be cleansed—cleansed. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us freely from every sin. All other blood, as you know, leaves stains, and there are special cleaners for removing bloodstains.
But the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses. There is no other way. So keep this classic account of Jonah in mind. The Word of God has eternal authority; it is not something that simply comes and goes. It has eternal authority precisely because it is the Word. ‘Will I escape this way?’ No, you will not. ‘Then will I go back the other way?’ You will not go that way either. What must be done will be done; what is right will be done. And when what is right has been done, then everything will be set in order.
So, when they saw that they could not bring the ship back to shore, they cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We beseech You, O Lord, we beseech You: do not let us perish for this man’s life. Do not make us pay for him. We will cast him into the sea, and the fish will devour him. Let whatever must happen, happen. Only do not let us perish for the life of this man, and do not lay innocent blood upon us.’ This shows that they regarded his blood as innocent and feared becoming responsible for shedding it.
‘You have done as You willed.’ Then they lifted Jonah and cast him into the sea. They had to lift him. He said, ‘Cast me in. Lift me and cast me in.’ I would say that, if you had any sense of honor, you would tell them, ‘I will jump in by myself. Why should I make you throw me in and bear the guilt as well?’ But there was a reason why all these things were said and done: so that they might help us today, and help people throughout the ages to find the right path, if they desire it. So they lifted Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Do you see what disobedience does? It provokes God’s wrath, and all the elements rise against us. Have you seen the icon in which Adam is seated...
...while all the animals pass before him and he gives them their names? You have seen it. I believe that icon is included in tonight’s series. The lion would approach, for example, and Adam would name it; then the serpent would come, then the hyena. They would lick his feet and kiss them, and he would give each one its name. Everything received a name corresponding to the purpose and role for which God had created it. But when Adam disobeyed, the creatures that had once licked his feet now bared their teeth at him. Once he disobeyed his God, they ceased to respect him and became savage toward him. According to one tradition, Adam went and sat upon a small island...
...to escape the fury of the animals. But when did this happen? When he sinned, when he disobeyed. Does a person not feel fear within himself when he sins? Does an inner voice not tell him, ‘What you did was wrong’? It does. But what does the person do? He tries to silence that voice. He says to it, ‘Be quiet! This is how the world is. I am young now. People in the old days were foolish; this is the enlightened age, this is life’—all so that his conscience will fall silent. Yet the conscience finds another opportunity and cries out again from deep within: ‘No, that is not right either. What you did was wrong.’ After receiving blow upon blow, the conscience eventually becomes disabled, and we reach the state described by the words, ‘You have no conscience.’ For the person whose conscience...
...is well formed and not covered over by sins receives correct guidance from it. The conscience is like a green and red light: ‘Do not go forward; there is danger. Go forward freely.’ God has an embassy within us. But some people have killed their conscience and are no longer guided by it. That is why we call them people without a conscience. Here is a story that confirms what I have been saying. A certain man once had a country house and, naturally, a large dog to guard it. At about two in the morning, he locked up the house and, being tired, went to sleep. But the dog below kept barking and would not let him rest. After a while, the man stepped onto the balcony and shouted, ‘Be quiet!’ The dog settled down...
...for a little while, but then began again, barking furiously below. The man came out once more and shouted, ‘Be quiet!’ Again the dog drew back, as though saying, ‘Be quiet, the master says. Be quiet, be quiet.’ It settled down, but soon it started barking again. The man became angry, took his double-barreled shotgun, went downstairs, fired at the dog, and killed it. The dog stopped barking, and the man went to sleep. But when he woke in the morning, he discovered that burglars had broken into the premises below. The dog had seen suspicious strangers outside and was warning its master upstairs: ‘There is a disturbance; something is happening.’ But the man killed the dog so that he could sleep. That is what the conscience is like. Many people have poisoned it, as we say, and rendered it useless. That is why they commit inhuman acts—not beastly acts.
Animals never go beyond their natural bounds. They do no such things. Try to make an animal mate with a close relative, its sister, or its mother. Yet human beings do such things. Or try to kill an animal’s young—try taking a kitten from a cat or a puppy from a dog, and it will tear your eyes out. We say that people behave like animals, but animals do not do what people do. And tomorrow, at that great tribunal, irrational nature itself will stand as a witness for the prosecution against fallen, rational man. Woe to us if we do not amend our lives before the Day of Judgment. Woe to us. Returning to our account, Jonah was cast into the sea, and the Lord appointed a great sea creature to swallow him. Jonah remained in its belly for three days and three nights.
O Lord, You are Lord even of the sea creature. Who created it? You did, and You command it. ‘I created it, and now I command it to go and take Jonah, and to shelter him in its belly for three days and three nights.’ Indeed, when the Pharisees asked our Lord for a miracle, He said, ‘An evil and corrupt generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given except the sign of the Prophet Jonah.’ The Lord appointed a great sea creature to swallow Jonah, and Jonah remained in its belly for three days and three nights. God, then, is Lord even of the sea creature. Many people ask, ‘Is it possible for Jonah...’
‘...to remain for three days inside the belly of the sea creature?’ I do not know. I simply ask, ‘Why is that so extraordinary?’ You may say, ‘How can you prove it?’ I remained inside my mother’s womb for nine months, and so did you. Why, then, should we stumble over someone who remained there for three days? Does anyone who questions Jonah’s three days ever stop to consider that he himself remained for nine months surrounded by water?
He lived in water. Was he a fish? Then the waters break, and they say, ‘The child must now be born, or it will die.’ The waters drain away, yet after the child is born, if a little water enters its nose, the child can die. For nine months in water the child does not perish. These things, my dear friends, are neither my work nor yours. They are His work. And when He commands, the order of nature is overcome. Wherever...
...He wills, the order of nature is overcome. The Most Holy Theotokos also asked, ‘How shall this be, since I know not a man?’ If you had known a man, you would not have been called to fulfill this role. It is precisely because you had not known a man that you were called to fulfill it. For the One to be born was not to be conceived by a man. Otherwise, He would have been merely an ordinary human being, and not the sinless man and Savior of sinners, as Saint Gregory Palamas says so succinctly. There are no miracles here that cannot be understood through faith. When God gave the command, the sea creature took Jonah, but it did not immediately carry him out again. No. It settled somewhere, so to speak, for three days. And there inside it, Jonah began to pray.
Why did you not pray sooner and say, ‘My God, give me strength, because I am about to disobey You. Do not let me cause some disaster. I am only human, and You are telling me strange and difficult things. Please help me’? But when a person is bound hand and foot and can no longer move, only then does he begin making long signs of the Cross and crying, ‘Most Holy Theotokos, help me,’ and so forth.
You know, if God were like a human being, woe to us. God hears the person and does not humiliate him. He respects his dignity and acts as though He has overlooked everything, instead of saying, ‘Stay down there, you scoundrel. I will not bring you out.’ Jonah began to pray, and you should read his prayer. Open your prayer book, your travel prayer book, or your Horologion.
Read Jonah’s prayer from the depths, inside the sea creature. Read what he said to God. God heard him even from there and commanded the sea creature to bring him out—at the very place the boat had been unable to reach. ‘You will come out by My way. You will not come out through your own rowing and cleverness. You will come out by My way and go where I told you.’ Man is small and ridiculous, yet unfortunately he sometimes draws himself up to his full height and says foolish things. And God laughs at man’s foolishness. He heard Jonah. But a time will come when God will not hear. That time is coming very soon, when God will not hear, and woe to the person who cries out to Him...
...and God does not hear him. A fire may break out and you may call the fire brigade, but it does not come—that is nothing. You may call the police and they do not come—that is nothing. You may call for an ambulance and it does not come—that is nothing. These things are trivial; they are nothing. But to cry out to God and receive no answer—that is the truly serious matter. Allow me to read something from Holy Scripture about what I am telling you: ‘How long, you simple ones—that is, you foolish ones—how long will you love foolishness? How long will scoffers delight in their mockery, and fools hate knowledge?’ That is precisely what happens. We hate God; we hate knowledge.
The Theotokos, the Gospel, the Annunciation—and still you do not obey. “I stretched out my hand, and no one paid attention. But you have rejected all my counsel and refused my reproof. Therefore I will laugh at your destruction.”
Cry out, “Most Holy Theotokos, help us!” The sirens will begin to sound, and who knows what else. Then, He says, “I will laugh at your destruction. I will rejoice when terror comes upon you—when your terror comes like desolation, your destruction rushes upon you like a whirlwind, and tribulation and anguish come upon you. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer. They will seek me earnestly, but they will not find me, because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord.” The fear of the Lord is the Lord’s university. He says, “They did not desire my counsel; they despised all my reproof. Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way”—in other words, they will reap what they sowed—“and they shall be filled with the fruit of their own evil schemes.”
“For the turning away of the foolish shall kill them, and the complacency of fools shall destroy them. But whoever listens to me shall dwell in safety and shall be at peace, without fear of evil.” Open the Book of Proverbs, chapter one, from verse twenty-three onward. This comes from the Wisdom of Solomon, written a thousand years before Christ, and it applies very closely to us—very closely indeed. Now, my beloved, let us make a brief digression that may be of benefit. We have become entangled with our flesh. We have become entangled with earth, fields, apartments, cars, televisions, and pleasures. And you know...
How many court cases and even murders arise over useless, insignificant things—things we were called to use, not abuse; to use, not possess as our own. For, as I told you the other day, they are neither yours nor mine; they are His. They are not yours or mine. We are only stewards here. Once, an elder gave two brothers a beautiful piece of advice, one with profound symbolic meaning. Allow me to tire you a little by telling you the story. In a village, two brothers—as so often happens—were tearing one another apart. They came to blows and nearly killed each other over a piece of land. “No, the boundary is not over there; it was a meter this way.” “No, put it here.” “No, put it there.” The boundary markers were half a meter apart, yet they nearly killed one another. Shots were fired.
Neither brother was hit. In any case, word spread through the village that these brothers were trying to kill each other. In that village lived an elder, a sensible and practical man respected by everyone. So the villagers said, “Why don’t we go to Uncle Nikos and ask him to reconcile them and speak a few words to them? We hope they will respect him.” They went to Uncle Nikos after first obtaining the young men’s consent. “Will you both accept whatever judgment Uncle Nikos gives? He is respected in every way by everyone.” “Yes,” they both answered with one voice. So he came to the house. “Come, lads,” he said. “Let us go and see what caused this. What has God given you that is worth killing each other over? Come, let us go and see.”
On the way, one kept saying, “I am right,” while the other said, “I am right; this belongs to me,” and so forth. “Leave all that until we get there.” At last they reached the field. “Here is our dispute. One says his land extends to this point.” “No,” said the other, “it extends over there.” “Let me see. Wait a moment,” the elder said. He knelt down and began murmuring something to the earth. When he stood up, they asked, “What were you doing?” “I asked the earth something.” “But can the earth speak?” “This earth spoke to me.” “What did you ask it?” “I asked whose it was and to whom it belonged.” “And what did it tell you?” “It said, ‘Tell them that they belong to me; I do not belong to them.’”
That settled it, and they left. “They belong to me; I do not belong to them”—nor does the earth belong to me. Do you understand? We are dust, and here we shall remain. Yet who reflects deeply on this? That is precisely why we suffer as we do. Nothing goes with us. In any case, after Jonah’s prayer, “the Lord commanded the great fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land.” Imagine Jonah now: soaked after three days inside it, covered with the whale’s saliva and so forth, vomited onto the shore, and having eaten nothing for so many days. Imagine what state he was in. And there, God came to him once again.
“The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’” “What shall I tell it?” “So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.” He went to say what God had commanded him. See God’s manner and His respect for human dignity. My prayer is that whenever someone causes us pain...
We should leave no bitter residue within ourselves. Bitterness left inside is like bitter leaven: it ruins even the finest flour and the finest dough. Put bitter leaven into dough made from the finest wheat, and the bitterness will spoil it. There must be no gall within us. That is why Christ says, “You shall forgive from your hearts.” From your hearts. In our account, Jonah arose and went on. “And Jonah began to enter the city, a day’s journey.” He walked through it for a day, crying out, “Three days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed! Three days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed! Three days, and Nineveh shall be destroyed!” The people heard, and the message spread.
By word of mouth, from one person to another, it reached the king, and the king learned of it. The sentence had been issued: “Thus says the Lord: Nineveh shall be destroyed.” The decree that it would be destroyed had been issued and signed by God. Jonah proclaimed it, and the king heard it. When he learned of it, the king acted as follows: “And it was proclaimed and made known in Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor infant nor flock, taste anything. Let them neither feed nor drink water.” Everyone was to fast. Some people ask, “Who came up with fasting?”
Who established the law of fasting? Who decreed fasting here? Faced with the threat of total destruction, what weapon do you raise, O king? Fasting. Fasting is a mighty weapon because fasting presupposes mourning. When people are gathered around the table, food brings comfort; others cook and bring it to you. So fasting is a great matter. We spoke about fasting the other day, and those who did not hear that talk should obtain it and listen to it. Fasting was established as a law in Paradise. Let us not deceive ourselves or indulge the belly, because failing to fast as we should has further consequences. “But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry mightily to God.”
“Let everyone turn from his evil way and tear down the paths of lawlessness, break off sinful relationships and all such strange things, and turn from the injustice in his hands. Who knows whether God will turn and relent, turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?” Who knows, he says, what may happen? Who can overcome the omnipotence of God? Yes, my beloved: a person’s metanoia, his repentance, softens Almighty God. When Christ sees repentance and confession, the sword falls from His hand. In a little chapel in my village, the Archangel was depicted holding a sword, with these words: “Deniers of bread, thieves, robbers, and fornicators, behold and tremble before this sword; for it is kept in my hand against those who do not believe rightly.”
God’s justice falls from His hands when He sees repentance and confession. You may be furious with your daughter or your son, ready to kill them. But then the child says, “Father, Mother, punish me, trample me underfoot. I did it. Forgive me.” You will stop. If you, a sinful human being, can do this, how much more will God? And so, “God saw their works, that they had turned from their evil way; and God relented concerning the calamity He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.” One act of repentance saved the whole of Nineveh. This is the weapon we always need, especially in our own times. If we want God to shelter us from the great tempest that is coming...
We must repent and confess. There is no other way. When the people of Israel were taken captive to Babylon for seventy years because of their sins, God sheltered Baruch beneath a fig tree and caused him to fall asleep. He slept there for seventy years, beneath the fig tree of Agrippa. After seventy years he awoke and picked up his basket, and the figs he had gathered still had their fresh sap on them. He rubbed his head and thought that he had not slept long, but would go into the city and sleep some more. This is God. He has not changed; He is the same. He has the power to preserve us from every affliction. For Greece must be preserved, and the Greek people must be preserved.
Orthodoxy must become known throughout the world. Therefore call the people—and call yourselves—to repentance, confession, and Holy Communion. This is what it says here: God relented. These people overcame God through their repentance. Jonah watched. Was Jonah glad that the city was not destroyed? No. “Jonah was exceedingly displeased, and he became angry.” He still had not learned his lesson. God had taught him so many lessons only a little earlier, yet the human element within him remained. He prayed, but now the prophet appeared to be a liar, because he had told them the city would be destroyed in three days, and it was not. God approached him and said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” Do you know what Jonah answered? “It is right for me to be angry, even unto death.”
Those were harsh words to say to God. Yet God continued to heal Jonah and did the following: “Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.” We mentioned this. Then the Lord God appointed a gourd plant. Jonah was sitting beneath the blazing sun, so God commanded a gourd plant to spring up in a single night and give him shade, so that the sun would not burn his head. It grew in one night. The next morning, God commanded a worm to bite the plant at its root, and the gourd plant withered—one of those broad-leafed gourds, with bright red or aubergine-colored markings.
God said, “Go and bite Jonah’s gourd plant.” The worm attacked the plant. At the same time, once the plant had withered and Jonah had lost its protection, God commanded a scorching east wind to blow upon Jonah’s head. Jonah was distressed. Then God came to him, as it were, and said, “Tell me, Jonah: you felt sorry for a gourd plant that you did not plant or nurture, which grew by itself and withered by itself, and yet you grieved over it. Should I not have pity on Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot distinguish their right hand from their left—and also many cattle?”
What does one hundred and twenty thousand mean? One hundred and twenty thousand little children who did not know their right hand from their left. Imagine: if there were one hundred and twenty thousand small children, how many adults must there have been? How many people lived in that city? And what a lesson God gave Jonah! The Lord of the wind, the Lord of the sea, the Lord of the calm, the Lord of the great fish, the Lord of the gourd plant, the Lord of the worm, the Lord of all things—and especially of the scorching wind. “You, blow as a scorching wind,” He said. Who commanded it? Immediately, it became a scorching wind. Everything is in God’s hand. He is the Almighty; He is the Ruler of all. He has authority over all, and He saves all. He will hold everyone beneath His hand—if only they choose to remain under Him. I do not know whether my words have fallen into a void. Yet I want to believe that in the book which is our Holy Scripture, we shall find many things of concern to us in this passage.
First of all, we are dealing with Almighty God. Whatever God commands, let us do it, and He will take care of everything beyond that point—everything we cannot resolve by our own reason. And let us put the matter of our sins in order. Let us untie His hands. Whether you are concerned about our life, our Church, our nation, our friends, or our children—whatever it may be—remove sin from the midst of us. The only thing that prevents God from acting upon us is sin. God has nothing against the sinner; it is sin that He opposes. That is why, when the prodigal son returned, his father seized him and did not merely kiss him, but kissed him fervently. That kiss is always given in the place of confession. And as I told you, those hearing these things for the first time should not leave Aidipsos this year without confession. Leave...
Leave with arthritis if you must, but do not leave with arthritis of the soul. I pray, of course, that you will not leave with bodily arthritis either. But if a choice must be made, take the baths and let the bodily arthritis depart; above all, the arthritis of the soul must go. Let us return home as new people and pass on to others what we have heard. Our people are good, but they do not know the sacred texts; they do not know the Church, because they have not cared to learn. Yet worldly knowledge is not everything. Man has landed on the moon, but he has not come down to earth. He knows what happens on the moon, yet he does not know what happens twenty-two centimeters beneath his own hand—there, where the publican struck his breast and said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” For this is the hornet’s nest—here. Here is the nous, the spiritual intellect, fused with the heart, as the Fathers say; here is the nest of the soul. Have you seen a sponge and how many chambers it contains? Every human heart contains just as many devils.
Each one of those cells must be cleansed, one by one, so that the nous, the spiritual intellect, may be freed from its dizziness. For from there rises a foul, suffocating gas—the stench of sin—which clouds the nous, and a person no longer knows what he is doing. He behaves irrationally; he becomes like a swine, he becomes—I do not know what—though he was created to become god by grace and is made in the image and likeness of God. I pray that Christ, through the intercessions of the Prophet Jonah, may have mercy on us all; but we too must be willing to do something, so that we may be spiritually benefited.

Πάω να τους πω: «Εάν δεν μετανοείτε, θα σας καταστρέψει», θα το καταλάβαινα να πάω. Και έτσι φεύγει από προσώπου του Θεού. Πού θα πας, Ιωνά; Πού είναι μέρος που δεν είναι ο Θεός, που φεύγεις τώρα από προσώπου του Θεού; Και αυτό δεν είναι μόνο ερώτημα του Ιωνά και δεν δημιουργεί ιλαρότητα για τον Ιωνά, αλλά και για πολλούς συγχρόνους Ιωνάδες, οι οποίοι κρύβονται να κάνουν τη στραβοτιμονιά τους, να μην το μάθει ο κόσμος, να μην το δούνε, να μην τα ακούσουνε, πάνε τα αυτά, σβήνουν τα αυτά κλπ. Πώς θα πας και δεν είναι το μάτι του Θεού μπροστά; Τι είναι εκείνο το οποίο θα κάνεις και θα πεις και δεν θα το ακούσει ο Θεός; Τι είναι εκείνο που θα φτιάξεις και δεν θα το δει ο Θεός και δεν θα το γράψει ο Θεός;
να μείνει τρεις μέρες μέσα στην κοιλιά του κήτους;» Δεν ξέρω εγώ. Εγώ λέω: «Τι είναι δε αυτό;» Θα μου πεις: «Πώς θα μου το αποδείξεις;» Εγώ έμεινα εννιά μήνες μέσα στην κοιλιά της μάνας μου κι άλλο τόσο έμεινες κι εσύ. Κι αυτός που έμεινε τρεις; Σκέφτεται ποτέ του ο άνθρωπος ότι έμεινε τρεις ημέρες ο ένας κι αυτός ο ίδιος έμεινε εννέα μήνες μέσα στα νερά;
