Summary
Christ fulfills the Decalogue by addressing the inward causes of murder and adultery, teaching that grace prevents sinful acts by first uprooting anger and lust. Marriage is honorable and the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, while sexual union is properly ordered within a blessed marriage open to family life rather than pursued solely for pleasure. Those who provide secrecy, places, money, transportation, or lies to conceal adultery share responsibility for sustaining it, yet repentance remains possible while life continues.

I see from my notes that, when we last stopped, we had reached
that part of the Gospel law.
It was speaking about that serious commandment, “You shall not murder.” “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder.’”
That was our last lesson, I believe. Then, in verse 27, we come this evening to another commandment, which says: “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman in order to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
You know, as we have said before, Christ brought the law—that is, the Decalogue—to its fulfillment. In a sense, He unfolded it in detail. The law stated the matter broadly; for example, “You shall not murder.” Now He goes to the root and says that you must not even become angry, because if you do not become angry, you will generally not commit murder. Someone might kill through negligence, by failing to take proper care and thus causing a death. Your firearm might discharge and you might kill someone accidentally. But most murders follow upon anger.
A quarrel breaks out; someone takes a knife or a gun and kills. Christ says: do not even become angry. By stopping it there, before things grow heated, you prevent the murder, and no murder takes place. Through the grace brought by the Gospel of Christ, He seeks to enable man to prevent the cause, so that the evil consequences may also be prevented. For if the cause—anger, for example—is prevented, murders will be reduced to a minimum. He says the same thing here concerning another commandment, the seventh commandment of the law: “You shall not commit adultery.” Here He says, “But I say to you.”
The law stated it broadly: take care not to commit adultery; do not go to another man’s wife or another woman’s husband. But I tell you to guard yourself even earlier: if you wish to avoid this grave and deadly sin, guard your eyes.
If you do not guard your eyes, but allow them to linger upon the beauty of a man or a woman, as the case may be, then you have already committed adultery in your heart, and only one thing remains: the outward act. You have already committed adultery in your heart because you have consented inwardly; all that remains is for an opportunity to be given to you
to carry out the act. You are therefore guilty of adultery.
These are details which, unfortunately, we do not heed. And if our confessor ever asks whether we have committed any deadly sin, we say no, even though we have committed it many times. Why is this? Because we do not know. We have not looked deeply into the matter; we have neither read nor heard how far the details of a sin extend, where a sin begins, and where it reaches completion. Therefore, whoever looks inquisitively and lustfully at a woman—or at a man—defiles his soul.
His soul is defiled.
Adultery is born within his soul, because in his mind and by his deliberate choice he desires that person, regardless of whether he has acted with that person or reached that point. Thus, in giving this commandment, Christ now says: do not allow even your gaze to fall passionately or shamelessly upon a person who may lead you astray. He prevents the sinful outcome and, in a sense, cuts the sin off at its root. In other words, He removes the conditions that lead to this deadly sin. This second requirement, then, is absent
for the most part even among otherwise respectable people, apart, of course, from certain people who guard their eyes, their ears, their hands, their bodies—everything—for everything works together. Man’s five senses are five pairs of windows through which Satan enters the human heart, takes possession of it, and compels the body to sin. The body comes second; it merely performs the forced labor demanded by the soul’s desire. First the soul consents, and then the body comes to act, to carry out and give concrete form, as we say, to the soul’s desire. If from the beginning no desire or consent arises in the soul, and if you do not allow Satan to enter through the senses, there will be no resulting Fall into sin. It is therefore the logismos, the intrusive thought, that receives consent, and this consent is a sin of the heart. All that remains is for an opportunity to carry out the act to be given to us. We have already sinned; that is why He says, “He has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This is what Christ tells us. That is why the bodily act always follows upon inward consent. And through all of this, the Lord
wishes to prevent the cause so that we may avoid the result. For He says, “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman in order to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
The first formal law against adultery appears under Moses. Yet I want you to believe that this was regarded as a grave sin even earlier, from the days of Adam, when there was no written law. Man already had within himself the awareness that this person belonged to that person in marriage. Perhaps this seems strange to you. Consider a practical example. Is fasting formally commanded anywhere at that point? No. Yet when the Ninevites sought a weapon against the coming judgment, what did they put forward?
Very well, where did they find fasting? How did you know, O king, that fasting is something that propitiates God and can disarm the justice of God? Evidently, it was unwritten. And yet it existed among the people. The conscience of mankind knew that fasting is something that can disarm even God’s judgment, because fasting presupposes penthos, mourning for sin. Do you want an example concerning adultery? Come, let us go together to Joseph the All-Comely. How many years before Christ did Joseph live? Seventeen hundred years. When was the commandment “You shall not commit adultery” given? Fifteen hundred years before Christ. So Joseph lived two hundred years before the law. What did he say to Potiphar’s wife?
“You do not belong to me; you belong to my master. Everything has been entrusted to me, and I may manage it all—except you. You belong to my master.” Who taught him this? You see, then, that there is an unwritten law governing people of good intention. God instructs and directs the world even without a written law. Later the written commandment was given because the sin had become frequent. God does not wish to tolerate it; it is displeasing to Him. The sin of adultery is without excuse, and to this day God does not excuse it.
The laws enacted in the world, the arrangements people make, what the Church may bless, and what the state may do are separate matters. God does not justify adultery, because it is lawless and unjust. There is no need for this sin. There is no reason for it to exist, and not a single excuse can be found for it. If matters are examined calmly and in their proper order, there is no justification whatsoever—none in the eyes of God. That is why He gave this brief commandment: “You shall not commit adultery.” Beyond this, scattered throughout the law are countless passages
that speak against adulterers, both men and women. Nor did God address the matter only through the prophets. The Wisdom of Sirach wrote about it; Solomon wrote about it; and Solomon also wrote about it in Proverbs. All of these were men of the Spirit who wrote these things. The Wisdom of Solomon says concerning the children of adulterers: “The children of adulterers shall not come to maturity, and the offspring of an unlawful bed shall vanish.” It is impossible for children born of an adulteress to prosper. “He who keeps company with an adulteress...”
“...is utterly ungodly.” Scripture says that the man who lives with an adulteress is senseless. He is ungodly before the law of God and foolish toward his own self; he is a man without understanding. This is written in Proverbs 12:12. The other passage, from the Wisdom of Solomon, was 3:16.
Deuteronomy had specifically required this of Israel: “There shall be no prostitute”—and when we say prostitute, keep in mind that this includes an adulteress—“among the daughters of Israel.” In other words, I will not tolerate such a person among them. And when it says “among the daughters of Israel,” it is as though we were to say today, among Christians. “Nor shall there be a male prostitute among the sons of Israel.” It is as though God were saying: I do not want these sins. God has this written in Deuteronomy 23:17, in that sacred law. And in Jeremiah, where He threatens the Israelites whom Nebuchadnezzar sent into captivity in Babylon for seventy years, it says in chapter 29, verses 22–23: “And from them shall a curse be taken up by all the captivity of Judah in Babylon, saying, ‘May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire.’” May you be roasted in the fire as they were, He says. “Because they committed folly in Israel and committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives.” That is what He says: may you burn. God pronounces the curse: may you burn like Zedekiah and Ahab.
May it happen as He did to those guilty of relations between close kin, when he reigns.
Because they committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives. See how greatly God detests this sin and does not desire it. Of course, these are not the only passages I am presenting to you. There are countless other aspects of it, which I gathered when I once wrote a book.
It is entitled Perdition Through the Flesh. All the passages from the Law and the Prophets are in it. I have it here before me, and I see that Leviticus 20:10 says: “If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife, or if he commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” Even among idolaters—for it was not only religious people, such as the Jews, who had commandments against this sin, but the Gentiles as well—they would gouge out the eyes, for example, or cut off the ears or the nose of those who committed it.
Today, as you know, it is considered fashionable for a married woman to have her boyfriend, or a married man his girlfriend; and in our cities today, adultery has reached eighty percent among both sexes. In the villages the circle is smaller and more restricted—not that it is absent there, or in provincial towns. And you understand how God regards this state of affairs. This is a sin whose purpose is certainly not the bearing of children; its purpose is pleasure. From it spring abortions, and from it spring all the other passions and evils. For if, unexpectedly, the woman conceives, what follows will be premeditated murder.
There will be lies, schemes, and who knows what else. There may even be murders, because, as you know, many adulterous women have met their death upon the very bed of their transgression. There is a particular demon behind this, which...
...drives the adulterer into such envy and jealousy that, after committing the sin, he slaughters the woman with whom he committed adultery. Saint Basil the Great spoke about this and said: “The same devil who leads a man into adultery and implants savage desire in him, after the adultery has been committed, also drives an unbearable hatred into him—not leading him toward good metanoia and repentance, but guiding him toward hatred of his fellow man.” After committing adultery, the adulterer looks upon the woman with whom he sinned as though she were a beast. And we often read of such things in the newspapers.
Holy Scripture never records, nor did the Fathers ever speak of, things that are not realities and do not appear before us every day. Christ, knowing what this earth would become, what man would become, and how far he would fall, seeks to forestall him as far as possible, so that he will not fall into this mortal sin. He gave each man to his wife and each woman to her husband. And unfortunately, something strange happens. I do not know whether you have noticed it. If not, pay attention to it, so that you may see how satanic it is. If we take one hundred adulterous women...
...we shall find that ninety of them freely chose their husbands. They chose them themselves. They lived with them for many years, wallowed in sin with them, endured hardships with them, and so on. They heard many warnings to leave them and not marry them, but they insisted on marrying them anyway. And now they no longer like them and go off with someone else. How did he please you all those years, in every hideaway and every little apartment you dragged me to, but now he no longer pleases you? Who changed your mind? The same one who was leading you before. Before, you did Satan’s will, and now you are doing Satan’s will again. Examine it and you will see. If a man or woman could say, you know...
“They gave me an unattractive woman,” for example, or, “My father forced me to marry such-and-such a man, and I do not want him,” that might offer some excuse. Perhaps I could find some slight moral ground for it and excuse a small percentage. But that is not what happens here; the very opposite happens. Those who once pined for one another and made sacrifices, who knowingly put their own hand into the fire, are the very ones who later, in a frenzy, go looking for someone else. Therefore, it is plainly satanic. It is not a matter of your husband or wife failing to satisfy you. The matter is that you have surrendered yourself to Satan, and he toys with you in his hand like beads. Take care of this as quickly as possible; it is better to die here than to be condemned to Hell there. Holy Matrimony is honorable.
The marriage bed must remain undefiled. The bed must remain pure—that is what “marriage bed” means. “Let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.” Yes, God will judge them. There are some young men and women who say that nowhere does God say, “You shall not commit sexual immorality”; He says only, “You shall not commit adultery.” So where is the command, “You shall not commit sexual immorality”? Adultery is not the same as sexual immorality. Is it not mentioned? Read Deuteronomy and see whether it speaks about sexual immorality. The Law states the matter broadly: “You shall not commit adultery.” But Deuteronomy also says, “You shall not commit sexual immorality.” And Paul says, “God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.”
He says this in Corinthians and in Hebrews 13:4. How can you exclude it? Paul says that you cannot take your body, which is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and make it a vessel and member of a prostitute. What does that mean? Sexual immorality, after all, refers generally to sexual relations outside marriage. “Because of sexual immorality,” Paul says, “let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.” But this must be in Christ, in the Lord, and blessed. God created the man and the woman, blessed them, and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply.” Read the texts. He did not create man and woman and then release them to do whatever they pleased.
He did not release them simply to pursue pleasure; He blessed them. So you and I are to receive a blessing and then go and have children. When you commit adultery, you do not do it in order to have children. And when you commit sexual immorality, you do not do it in order to have children. You do it to obtain pleasure and nothing more. You have no other intention. And when you learn that you have made the other woman pregnant, you leave behind wilted roses and run away. You go, pay money, and arrange the rest; then you become a criminal as well, committing premeditated murder. Upon one mortal sin you add another, and then another, until a whole chain is formed. This is what happened with Herod: he added murder to adultery so that he would not have to destroy his unlawful bed, because each of these sins gives birth to the next. They have been fashioned so cunningly by the devil that, without realizing it, you become entangled and cannot break free. Then...
“I want to leave it, but it will not leave me.” Even if you want to abandon these things, they will not let you go. You may pay for this sin and this pleasure with blood and with your very life, quite apart from the other state that awaits us beyond the grave. This is what I see from the passages I am reading here. I do not know what condition you are in, what you have passed through, how you are living now, whom you have around you, or what help you can offer in this matter. If you can help, then help. For as long as life remains and the breast still breathes, there is room for metanoia and repentance. He then goes on to say...
In verses 29 and 30, He says: “If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.” Some people separate this passage from what precedes it, failing to notice that it is a continuation...
...of the teaching about adultery. There is no full stop there. It is a continuation of Christ’s words about adultery, and this is part of His argument. In His effort to forbid this passionate disposition—through the eye, touch, the hand, the body, the hearing, and so forth—so that the soul of a man or woman will not sin, Christ says that you may find yourself in circumstances where there are certain people around you...
...whom you cannot easily avoid, or whom you need, and who serve you like a right hand or an eye. It is better, He says, to deprive yourself of them than to lose your soul. I know a woman who lost her husband. He became involved with her maid. Because she would not dismiss the maid, because she did not want to lose the maid’s services, she lost her husband. She lost him both bodily and spiritually. The girl in her home served as her right hand. As we say, “She is my right hand; if I lose Katina, I am lost.” And so, at any cost, Katina must not be lost!
Yet the husband was lost, and his soul was lost; and the wife lost her husband, his soul, his body, and the little one was lost as well. These are the cases Christ means when He speaks of an eye or a hand that causes you to stumble. They are people around you who serve as an eye or a hand. You must prefer to deprive yourself of every benefit and assistance you receive from such a person if that person may become an occasion of sin, because your whole situation will be ruined. Others suffer the same harm from what appears to be the opposite direction: “Let me do something good.” Then deprive yourself of that good deed.
“Let me help this young man.” Yes, but you will bring him into your home, and you have daughters. What will happen? “Am I to lose this income?” But you may lose your daughters. Does God want that income? This actually happened. A woman had two daughters and brought a male relative into her home. Not only did he corrupt one of them, but he even married her when she gave birth. Then he divorced her, and afterward...
Do you defile it?
“These things must be cut off from me,” He says. And do you know how many such cases there are? Yet we fail to notice them. Someone brings a young man from the village to help him. But must you bring him into your home? It is good and holy to help the young man get back on his feet, but you have a young woman living in the house. What will happen?
You must be careful, because you will have to give an account. Many people fail to grasp these details, these fine points contained in the Gospel, and so they create dangerous situations. Here, in this particular passage, He says that there may be a person who serves as your right hand or your eye. For He is not speaking literally about hands and eyes. Why does He specifically say the right hand? If my right hand were cut off, I would still have my left: I could steal with my left, strike someone with my left, or fire a gun with my left. That is not what He means. The same applies to the right eye. If you put out my right eye, I will still see with my left and go on doing the same things. So He is not speaking about the physical eye, as some claim; He is speaking about people who serve as a right eye to us. Listen to what an ancient commentator says.
“By the right eye He means a beloved and trusted friend, cherished like one’s own eye; and by the right hand, a trusted servant who is as useful as one’s own hand.” This applies whether they are men or women. He says that if any of them cause you to fall into passionate desire, do not spare them. Do not feel sorry for them or say, “How will I manage without them?” Cut off their relationship with you and cast them away from you.
That means: send them away from the house, separate yourself from them—do whatever is necessary. Drive the temptation far away from you and out of your home, because otherwise...
God will hold you responsible if tomorrow He tells you, “Go to Hell.” I do not know whether you understand these things or realize how many such situations occur among us. And why do they occur? Because we lack discernment—the discernment to know when we should bring someone into our home and when we should not. “But he is my brother’s child.” Could he not be your own child? What difference does it make whether it is your brother’s son or your brother’s daughter, if you are going to lose your husband, your daughter, your child, or your own soul? Those ties must be put aside. Does not God call you to leave father and mother? So what are you telling me about your brother’s child?
Help him away from your home; by all means, help him. Otherwise, God has other ways to help him. You are not his savior. Satan deceives you and stirs up an exaggerated sensitivity in you so that he can get you into his grasp. He has caught many people this way. They weep and lament, yet they do not sever these bonds. When such a bond must be cut, Christ goes so far as to say: send that person away; cut him off. Suppose you have a young woman working in your office. If you are acting rightly and see that she is becoming a temptation to you, you must dismiss her. “But she is doing important work.” You must still dismiss her. That is how it is. Otherwise, you may lose your family and your soul. You will ruin her as well, and homes will be destroyed.
The whole affair will end in ruin. What else can happen? If you have an employee who becomes a temptation to you, you will have to give an account for that person too. You must separate. Or perhaps someone is leading you into other sins, for this teaching extends further and has many applications. It is not confined to adultery and the temptation of the eye. There are countless ways in which other people influence us, and if we had severed those ties, we could have prevented disaster. But we did not sever them, because the person was our friend or companion, because we shared positions or interests, because the person was prominent or important, or because we expected some material benefit. Yet spiritually, we suffered loss. Christ goes this far: “Pluck it out,” He says.
Cut it off and cast it away, or else you will be lost. Unfortunately, such surgical operations do not take place in our society, and you can see the result. Even cousins become entangled with one another—and, I am sorry to say, sometimes even siblings. How do such things happen? Since apartment buildings replaced separate homes of the kind people had in the past, people live in much closer proximity and cannot avoid seeing one another. And from seeing, desire is born. Thus we have reached the condition we see today. Moral sensitivity has grown dull, nothing has been left standing, and these people behave like adulterous animals rather than human beings.
Christ remains firm in His teaching. He has not changed. I do not know whether you see this, but pay attention. At this point I would like to say the following: if we, who are called Christians and claim to preserve our moral integrity...
The reason adultery continues is that there are people who conceal it, shelter it, and support it. A popular saying goes, “A fortress cannot be taken without someone betraying it from within.” As a rule, apart from certain exceptions, this is always what happens. Many men and women bear responsibility either for beginning an adulterous affair or for keeping it going. Without them, there would be no place in which this corruption could thrive. Do you remember what Joseph said—or rather, what Holy Scripture says about Joseph? “Being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her publicly, he resolved to put her away secretly.”
To be righteous means to fear God. Joseph could not keep her in his home while she was pregnant. He knew that he himself was innocent, and God knew it too, but he could not conceal what he believed had happened. He thought that she had conceived through an unlawful union, and he could not cover it up. But what about you? How can you conceal such things? How can you lend your telephone, your car, or your money? How can you lie on the telephone and say that she was with you or at your house? Tell me, how can you provide her with an alibi, carry on her correspondence, and do so many things to cover for her—or for the man involved? How can you do it? Without some means of concealment, the affair cannot continue.
It could never reach the extent it has reached today. Many women even make their homes available to their friends. Besides those who have private apartments and similar places, others offer their own homes. They also employ all sorts of deceit on behalf of a friend and imagine that they are helping her. This attitude is also found among schoolchildren; it is a satanic delusion. I remember speaking three or four years ago at a girls’ secondary school in Chalkida. There must have been more than two thousand girls. I was speaking about the Theotokos. It was Great Lent, and I was speaking about the Akathist Hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos.
When I came to the teaching that she is Ever-Virgin, I spoke about this matter and said something similar: how much harm is done by people who conceal the corruption of others. When we were young, if someone reported some wrong we had done—perhaps smoking a cigarette in secret or playing cards—and told our parents or teacher, we called that person a snitch. To avoid being branded with that name, the person stopped reporting us, and we were then free to carry on with our filthy behavior. Exactly the same thing happens now. A girl is regarded as a good friend and even a benefactor when she covers for her companion, though she knows whom that companion is seeing and what she is doing. Yet if she disclosed it to a serious and responsible teacher...
That teacher could counsel the girl and prevent her from going further. Or if she told the girl’s mother or father, provided they were sensible parents, they could intervene in time. But she does not do so, because she is convinced that she is protecting her. Yet there is no worse betrayal and no greater dishonor. When I said something along these lines—not the exact words I am using now—I saw all two thousand heads turn as the girls looked at one another. Why? Because their whole understanding of the matter was wrong. They did not know; they imagined that they were providing a service. “She is my childhood friend.” So will you keep her as your childhood friend while helping her become an adulteress? Is that what it means to be her childhood friend?
What are you saying? Instead of helping her climb out of the mire, will you cover for her? What can such behavior be called? And yet this mentality remains—this distorted way of thinking, this false understanding of the matter—because people have been left without illumination. I tell you, this corruption would not exist to such a degree otherwise.
No sin can ever be completely contained and eradicated. It will continue to exist, but it can be limited. Would adultery have reached its present proportions, openly parading itself, becoming enshrined in law, and reaching the government ministries, Parliament, and who knows where else? Why has this happened? Because of this distorted understanding. At least we Christians...
For our part, should be a little leaven of moral health concerning adultery and sexual immorality, for the same principle applies to sexual immorality as well. Would there be such corruption among young men and women if no one concealed it? No, there would not. It would still exist, of course, as I said earlier, but at a much lower rate. So let us reduce it as much as we can. Perhaps the person will not listen or respond to words. But have you ever prayed for that soul who is rushing downhill toward destruction? Tell me, what have you done? Have you ever offered a Paraklesis to the Most Holy Theotokos, asking her to intervene and help that soul? You have not. Then how can you say that you have ever truly helped?
The world cannot offer this kind of help, but a Christian can help in a positive way, because the Christian possesses the weapon of prayer, which the world and worldly people do not know. Prayer can move the will of God; prayer prevails even before almighty God. Have you prayed about this matter? Where is your love, and where is your concern? And even if, for some reason, you feel no love for that person, where is your love for God, when God’s law is trampled so mercilessly and shamefully and His commandments are violated? Where is that love? What have you done in such a case? How often have you opened your mouth and said, “My God, protect us and bring an end to this sin that has become so widespread in our days”? No one does so. Nothing is heard; no such plea has reached Heaven, because no such plea has been made.
“Have the people asked this of Me? If they have not asked, how shall I do it? Have I not said, ‘Ask, and it will be given to you’? Did you ask Me, and I refused to give it? You did not ask Me.” I once admired an answer given by the Protosyncellus of Corinth, Father Nektarios, a deeply illumined man. Two years earlier, there had been no rain for a long time, and everything was under threat. While we were speaking with Father Nektarios, someone approached him and said, “Issue an order to the churches that processions be held so that God may send rain.” He answered, “No, because processions should not be held by administrative order. The people themselves must ask for them.” That was a wise answer. I stood there looking at him in admiration.
What discernment he possessed! The people themselves must come to feel that God is withholding the rain because of their sin; they must ask for the procession, and then it should take place. I will not issue an order saying, “Pray to God for rain.” That is not how it should be done. People must feel the need themselves. We do not possess such virtues. In what does your virtue consist, my dear friend? Where will God find you standing before Him? You showed mercy to someone by giving a worthless little coin—is that all mercy means? Where is spiritual mercy? This is a very serious matter. Study it, if you wish. I do not want to speak to you about its reward, because, as the divine John Chrysostom says, those who do good works while calculating the reward they will receive are still weak. For those who expect rewards...
Those who expect rewards—gifts in return for the good deeds they perform—are still weak; such rewards are for the weak. They are not for the strong, who act without expecting to be rewarded, because they know they are duty-bound to act. They do what they are obliged to do and expect no reward at all. Yet it appears that we too remain indifferent, unless this octopus—or one of the tentacles of this octopus called adultery or sexual immorality—has seized us personally. Even so, we have not attained the deep spiritual cultivation of a Christian. In any case, there is a little more further on, so let me mention that as well. Christ says a few more words, and then He concludes
on the subject of the certificate of divorce.
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” At that time the Mosaic Law said—though it had not been so from the beginning—that if a man found he could not live in harmony with his wife, he was to give her a document so that she could leave and marry someone else. But it had not been so from the beginning. This provision was introduced later because of their hardness of heart.
Elsewhere, if you read the nineteenth chapter of Matthew, you will find the passage where they asked Christ, “Why, then, did Moses command that a certificate of divorce be given?” He answered, “Because of their hardness of heart.” The Jews would have killed their wives in order to be rid of them and take another. So, to prevent them from committing murder, Moses was compelled to make this provision. In the same way, our Church is sometimes compelled to give a blessing for a second marriage, and even for a third. Something similar happened then. In the twenty-fourth chapter of Deuteronomy, verse one, we read that a certificate of divorce could be given, allowing the woman to marry another man; and if that second man divorced her, she could receive another certificate from him and marry someone else.
But if she had children with the second man and he then died, she could not return to the first, because she was regarded as defiled and unclean, having borne children to another man after once having belonged to the first. There are, of course, provisions of this kind that do not apply to us today. But they were in force in the days when Christ spoke these words. So when someone finds them here, he must not take them and apply them today, because they are not applicable today. Christ established one marriage and gave one woman to one man. He did not establish forty spouses—neither forty husbands nor forty wives. Thank you.
In order to deal pastorally with such situations, and to prevent people from living permanently in sexual immorality and adultery, the Church permits a second marriage, as I told you, and often even a third, when certain conditions are met. But do not seize upon this concession and apply it indiscriminately. Now, speaking in general terms, I would like to tell you that, as Christians, we must undertake a small crusade on this issue. And if we cannot do so through our words, through instructive leaflets, or by some other means, then at least we must do so through our prayers. Every married couple and every person we know to be committing adultery or living in an unlawful relationship must be included in our prayers. If we do not do this, we do not love Christ. For if we are Christ’s brethren, and these people are members of the Church—baptized human beings—then they are our brothers and sisters. Consequently,
Christ will judge us one day.

Πρώτη νομοθεσία κατά της μοιχείας έχουμε επί Μωσαϊκής. Όμως θέλω να πιστεύετε ότι και γρηγορότερα εθεωρείτο μεγάλο το αμάρτημα αυτό, από ημερών Αδαμικών, που δεν υπήρχε νόμος. Μέσα στον άνθρωπο ήταν το αίσθημα αυτό, ότι αυτό το πρόσωπο ανήκει σε εκείνο το πρόσωπο. Ίσως να σας φαίνεται παράξενο αυτό. Πάρτε μια υπόθεση στην πράξη. Υπάρχει πουθενά νηστεία νομοθετημένη; Όχι. Όταν οι Νινευίτες, τι προέβαλαν ως όπλον;
Καλά, πού τη βρήκαν; Πού ήξερες εσύ, βασιλεύ, ότι η νηστεία είναι κάτι που εξευμενίζει τον Θεό και μπορεί να αφοπλίσει τη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού; Φαίνεται μη γραμμένο. Και εν τούτοις υπήρχε μέσα εις τον λαό. Υπήρχε μέσα εις τη συνείδηση του κόσμου ότι η νηστεία είναι κάτι που αφοπλίζει και αυτόν τον Θεόν, διότι προϋποθέτει πένθος η νηστεία. Θέλεις για τη μοιχεία; Έλα, πάμε μαζί στον Πάγκαλο Ιωσήφ. Πόσα χρόνια είναι προ Χριστού ο Πάγκαλος; Χίλια επτακόσια χρόνια. Πότε εδόθη το «ου μοιχεύσεις»; Χίλια πεντακόσια χρόνια. Άρα διακόσια χρόνια προ του νόμου. Πώς λέγει στην κυρία Πετεφρή;
Το μολύνεις;
Αυτά θα μου κοπούνε, λέει. Και ξέρετε πόσα τέτοια είναι; Αλλά εμείς δεν μπορούμε να τα προσέξουμε. Έφερε τον άλλον από το χωριό να τον βοηθήσει. Πρέπει να τον βάλεις στο σπίτι; Καλό και άγιο να βοηθήσεις το παλικάρι, να στραφεί. Αλλά έχεις μέσα στο σπίτι κοπέλα. Τι θα γίνει;
Να τη νουθετήσει και να την προλάβει, εάν την αποκάλυπτε στη μητέρα της ή στον πατέρα της, αν ήταν σώφρων ο πατέρας και η μητέρα, μπορούσαν να την προλάβουν. Τώρα δεν το κάνει, με την πεποίθηση ότι της προσφέρει προστασία, και δεν υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη ρουφιανιά και δεν υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη ατιμία. Ε, όταν μίλησα με κάτι παρεμφερή λόγια, δεν είναι αντιγραφή αυτά τα λόγια που λέγω τώρα, είδα ότι αυτά τα δυο χιλιάδες κεφάλια γύρισαν και κοιτάχτηκαν μία με την άλλη. Γιατί; Διότι υπάρχει κακή τοποθέτηση. Δεν ξέρουνε, νομίζουν ότι προσφέρουν υπηρεσία. Είναι παιδική μου φίλη. Λοιπόν, θα την έχεις, μην την πω, και θα είναι παιδική σου φίλη; Θα τη βοηθάς να είναι μοιχαλίδα; Είναι παιδική σου φίλη;
