Summary
On the feast of the chief Apostles Peter and Paul, the speaker turns from their biographies, treated in earlier talks, to their epistles as the way to approach their persons and work. Reading 2 Peter 2, the speaker argues that God is good but also just, and that the angels cast into Tartarus, the Flood that spared only Noah, the ashes of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the rescue of Lot were set down as examples of what awaits the ungodly. The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night, and the speaker testifies to the scandalous mercy shown him during the Occupation and in Albania, warning that no one knows which drop of God's patience, falling once a century into the cup, will be the last.

Tonight our Church celebrates the two chief Apostles, Peter and Paul. And I think that something ought to be said this evening about these two persons. But then again, we have spoken about them before, at length. Above all about Paul, to whom we owe so very much. For the Lord Jesus Christ used him, and through him made Himself known to us. But especially about Peter, we have spoken in the past about his return, about his fall, and generally about the way he conducted himself. Still, something has to be said tonight, and I thought, with God's help and by His grace, to take something from their teaching. In that way we will come close, in a sense, to their persons and to their work. Wherever you open them, in the fourteen epistles of Paul and in the two catholic epistles of Peter, you will truly stand in awe before the things they labour to remind us of, one thing above all, the very thing a person will not attend to. Both of them, as if by common agreement,
have insisted on it and thrown light on it. What people will not attend to, above all else, is their own end. And the end, for a human being, has two faces. His end may have to do with the end of the world, or his end may be his own death. In one of these two ways, a person will one day find himself face to face with his Creator. Whether he believes it or not, whether he wants it or not. Satan, as the men of the Spirit tell us, until the third century was striking at
the Church of Christ head-on. But he was defeated, and he changed his tactics. He hid his presence. This is an art of Satan's, to hide his presence and to trick a person's attention away from his own departure out of this world, with those words we have all heard many times whispered in our ear, the words: we have time. You will meet plenty of people who are at the very end of old age, and you will see that although they have not two feet in the grave but two and a half feet in the grave, you will still hear them say: when we get old, we will have to see to these things.
And she is ninety-five years old. I was talking with a lady, ninety-five years old, and she says to me, of course, Mr. Panagopoulos, as soon as I get on in years and reach that age, I will certainly attend to all these things. Now when she is going to reach that age, I do not know. From when does old age begin?
So this is a trick of Satan's, and it happens; and this trick of Satan's, this method of his, we Christians pass it on ourselves as well, and we have never once confessed that we have deceived people this way, even though we have proof that people do not have days left, do not have hours left, and neither do we.
Instead of drawing their attention and telling them plainly
at the age you are, at the age we are, with the health we have lost and so on, shouldn't we be ready, shouldn't we have our ticket in hand at every moment? We do not say it, and so we lead people astray, and we have never confessed that we failed to tell the truth in certain cases and the results were the very opposite of what we wanted. The people departed, their book was closed, and we packed them up, we sealed them, and we sent them off to Satan. And then we hold memorial services for them with a bishop in attendance, for the very people we sealed and sent off, whom nobody is going to unseal there, where we sent them from here. Because they could have gone with their accounts left open, open to receive from here whatever the love of Christ sends through people, through their Church, the Orthodox Church. So I say that both the Apostle Paul and the Apostle Peter
did not fail to remind us of this in their epistles. Of course, I want to believe, and I would gladly be proved a liar in what I believe, that none of you, or only a small percentage, one or two per cent. The rest of you will not even have read in your Gospel, in your Scripture, the very things I am going to read out and set before you tonight, which are the words of these holy men whom our Church celebrates this evening. Therefore God is not to blame; He left us the prescription, He told us what will happen, He told us not to be deceived and not to pay attention to these whistlings of Satan, that we still have time.
This happened from the very beginning; it is not something new. And if you read that passage our Church has pressed into service in the funeral services, the one from Thessalonians, which says, I would not have you ignorant, that we who are alive, we who sorrow, Paul says, and the phrase we who are alive he writes with an eta, not with an upsilon; that is, he does not write you who will be alive then, he writes we, counting himself among them. At every moment he was expecting the coming of Christ. We shall be caught up in the clouds in the air, to meet Jesus. In other words, from that time already he was expecting the Second Coming. And yet about two thousand unbroken years have gone by and things remain as they were. And so, when a person hears these things,
he says: you sit there and listen to these fairy tales? Have you seen anything change, have you seen anything at all being prepared? Because nothing was ever going to change and nothing is going to change. But it will come upon each one of us all the same, either through death or through the Second Coming. Both of these apostles write words on this matter. Allow me to present the Apostle Peter first. And this Apostle Peter writes as follows, that we must be careful, because we shall be punished. God is good, but He is also just. Many people, unfortunately, strip away the attribute of God's justice
and speak always of a good God. Yes, but everyone who is good must also be just. A person who is not just cannot be understood as good. So the justice of God, the other half of it, they hide away, and they speak always of God being good. And so Peter writes in his Second Epistle, in the second chapter, verse four, the following. For if God, he says, if God spared not the angels that sinned, when the angels sinned He cast them down to Tartarus. And what became of the angels? They became satans; they were punished. For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to Tartarus and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; and spared not the old world,
He spared not, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness. Did He not send the flood? Are we better than those people were then? Are we better today than Sodom and Gomorrah were then, or do we not have our own Sodom and Gomorrah today? Bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes He condemned them with overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly. All these things, he says, He set down as an example, so that the ungodly might know what awaits them. It is the same God who drove out the first-formed ones for a single fault, the same God who cast the angels down into Tartarus, because they took it into their heads to set their throne above the throne of God, the same God who rained down fire and brimstone and burned up Sodom and Gomorrah,
who opened the fountains of the deep and opened the floodgates of heaven and flooded the world and left only the one family of Noah; it is the same God. And He delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked; He preserved Lot, he says, from that depravity of the people who had settled there at that time. For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation; He knows, he says, how to keep the godly safe, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished with fire. And Satan, has he not been punished yet today? Because many people are scandalised and ask: where is God?
If there were justice, why does He not punish? Satan punished Job's wife; God delivered her into his hand, did He not deliver her? He killed her, did he not kill her? So then, someone who is living today as a sinner, ungodly, whatever he may be. Is that because God is blessing him and putting up with him and saying to him, well done, my fine fellow, I will let you live because I like what you are doing? He does not like it, not at all. But you see, with Satan He left us one great example; He let him have her, He let her be, so that Satan could use her the next day against Job, and people would say, what a joy of a wife.
Mrs. Noah, and this Mrs. Noah was a treasure and a weapon in the hands of Satan, against him. Against Job, rather, forgive me. And to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished, he says, but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise dominion; they are presumptuous. So God always has His mind on both, on the godly and on the ungodly. Now if His justice is not acting at this moment, that does not mean it does not exist or that it will not be handed down. It exists and it will be handed down, but He is longsuffering; he says so further on, in the next chapter. And so I read now from the third chapter of the same man, of Peter,
of his epistle. This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you. He had written a first catholic epistle too. And in both of them, in this second epistle, I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder; I want to wake you up. That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. I want to remind you, he says, of the things Christ has said through the prophets and through the apostles. Knowing this first, this is what I want you to know first of all, that there shall come in the last days scoffers; there will come people who will mock,
walking after their own lusts; they will do as they please, they will live their own lives, and at the same time they will say, in order to justify why they are indifferent to everything, they will say: where is the promise of His Second Coming, His Parousia? Two thousand years have gone by and there is no sign of this coming. For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. The sun rises where it always rose and sets where it always set; we have winter, harvest, summer, spring; the seasons follow one another in turn; nothing has changed, he says. Where are these things they keep telling us about? Forget it, then. They are fairy tales, they are the words of people who have an interest in frightening others with life beyond the grave, with hells and so on, so that they can exploit them.
For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of; it escapes them, he says, people forget. Willingly, because they like it to escape them, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, the heavens existed long before, he says, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water; the waters existed both before and after, standing together by the word of God; God spoke and the waters were separated, and the sea came out on its own and the dry land on its own; whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. They have forgotten, he says. Wasn't that exactly what those people were saying back then too, where is God? And even so, God
helped them so that they might repent; they did not repent, and in a single moment He flooded them, having put Noah into the ark with the necessary provisions to keep him for the six months the flood was going to last, and all those outside were drowned. When Noah received the command to build this ship on dry land, which to the people around him was madness,
it took a full hundred years for him to finish it. He was five hundred years old, and he finished it at six hundred. Can you imagine how many people over a hundred years saw this ocean liner sitting on dry land.
Imagine how many working men laboured on that ship, how many ate bread from it, how many took wages from it, how many perhaps even took advantage of elder Noah — saying he was out of his mind, building a ship on dry land. And of course, the elder...
If he was asked, "What are you doing here, grandfather? What are you doing here, elder?" he would answer: God is going to destroy the world. God is going to send a flood. The grandfather's mad. Take the money and let's go to the tavern and eat. The grandfather built it. They saw him carrying provisions inside. He didn't carry them in by himself, of course! Naturally — an old man, a man already five hundred years old. For so many animals to go in, so many birds, so many wild beasts, eight people, and for them to live six months with some comfort, or at the very least with food — that is a whole supply operation. Certainly men worked on it, they were paid their daily wages, animals were put to work and hauled the loads and brought them inside. None of this happened off in some remote corner.
It was all out in the open — and not one of them would condescend to step inside. Because I want to believe Noah would not have put anyone out. He would sooner have left a buffalo outside, left a crocodile, left I don't know what else outside, and taken the man in. Not even the craftsmen went in, and they all perished. The signal was struck, and of course all those people saw that wonder: the animals two by two, the wild beasts two by two, the birds two by two, coming of their own accord and going inside. And of course this did not happen at night, nor in a split second.
They must have passed through villages, they must have passed through cities, and on they went and in they walked. That is how it happened, with all those people watching. Millions of eyes saw it. And not one of them would condescend to go inside. "Noah's a fool." At the end his family went in — Shem, Ham and Japheth, the three sons with their wives, and Mrs Noah and Mr Noah — and God Himself shut the door on them, shut it from the outside. And once they were inside, still on dry land, the depths began to open, because it was not only raining; the deeps opened up from below as well — from below and from above — and the Flood came.
And there it stayed, on the surface of the waters, for six whole months. And the wild beasts survived, and the ravens survived, and the animals survived, they survived and they survived — and the builders who made the ark did not survive. The same thing happens today. God has not changed. The justice of God is the same and the love of God is the same, and the mind of God is the same. God does not evolve; God has spoken once and for all. Certain people forget, he says; they don't want to take the past and be taught by it for the present and for the future. Why are they so busy today drowning our history? So that they can take hold of us. That is what they are trying to sink. Because if we can stand firm...
...if we can look at ourselves through our history. History is always what a person draws on for the present and for the future. When a person falls into forgetfulness of his own history, he cannot stand. So they forget; this escapes certain people. And yet it happened. And lately science comes along — the archaeologist's spade — and it speaks of Ararat and speaks of the Ark, and it finds traces of a flood, and science confirms what Scripture says, written fifteen hundred years before Christ. Indeed, it says, this is how it will be. So you forget, he says, that the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God. He who separated the waters and brought forth life upon the earth...
...and the rest — He is the One who set them in place. "But the heavens and the earth which are now," he says, "by the same word" — by that same word, the word of Christ — "are stored up for fire, kept unto the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men." It is a fearful thing —
if you will allow me the expression, to picture it vividly: what happens the moment God says, "Fire!" May He never give that command, "Fire!" Once the order "Fire!" is given, nothing is left. Because I don't think there is anything more to it than this. It's only a little lime, a few stones and a bit of iron — that's all it is, isn't it? There is never anything else. It's only that it has been galvanised and manufactured, and we have made a civilisation out of it, we use it and so on — and again, all of it by the laws this God has, laws we have only recently discovered, and then we play the clever one. If we were really clever we should have discovered them from the moment God made them, because they were not made now; those laws were already there. It is the discoveries that are happening now, and man struts about because he discovers things...
...that have been there ever since the world has existed. Man has made no progress at all; he is far behind. He discovers laws that were already there — and think how much he still has left to discover. And these things ought not to drive him away from God, away from the Master Craftsman, from the Architect who made them. They ought to bring him closer, so that he asks His forgiveness and says: Creator — if he doesn't want to say God — Creator, I didn't make these things, and neither did my mother-in-law. Forgive me that You made them all these years and I knew nothing about them. And You have others that I still haven't discovered. Enlighten me, open my eyes, teach me. But his egotism won't allow it. "We discovered it, we went to the moon" — and what did we do? We banished God from the moon. Off with you to the moon, then; go and live on the moon, go loaded up, with your sack of oxygen on your back, and live there.
And God says to you: here, this earth — this little grain of a thing — why must you have more? Look: suppose I give you a pearl, a tiny one, and I give you, I don't know, five tons of glass. Which will you take? Won't you take the pearl? Why? Because you know that in it lies the price, the value. Does God not know where the value lies? Yes, what is the earth next to the other constellations and so on? Don't ask me now what it is; it doesn't interest me what it is. I am telling you that the centre of gravity lies in life — life, which you never made and never will make, O man. And if you take the life that already exists and put it in tubes to be preserved and multiplied, you have done nothing at all. Without life, can you make me life? That is what I want him to tell me — if he can make life without life,
without living sperm and without living ova, then I will kiss his feet. But until then, sit quietly and keep still. But man is an egotist and doesn't want to admit these things. So this world of ours is being kept in store. So that when Christ punishes the ungodly, He will destroy all this. He will burn it up; heaven and earth will pass away. Isaiah writes it eight hundred and fifty years beforehand: "We look for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness shall dwell." And John was counted worthy to see the new heaven and the new earth. In a heaven and on an earth we shall live, my friends —
look at the twenty-first chapter of John and see what it says. "And I saw a new heaven" — new, spelled with alpha-iota — "and a new earth," again with alpha-iota, "for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no more sea." There it is. Who are you to correct that? You cannot grasp it; the two are entirely different things. How could we possibly understand anything else that remains beyond this? There was nothing else. And the same Saint continues: "But, beloved, let not this one thing escape you." Don't let it slip past you, he says. You talk about thousands of years and so on: "one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." What are a thousand years to God, of whose kingdom there shall be no end? So what is a billion years — let's grant it — next to eternity? A drop in the ocean, and even that is too big a word for it. What do two thousand years mean, or five thousand, or a hundred thousand? "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness." As certain people think and say: that He is slow, that these things never happen,
that they haven't happened up to this day — "but is longsuffering toward us." That is the word: "but is longsuffering toward us."
Look at the words: longsuffering means anger held far off. The anger is real; it is postponed. What happened to the trial? It was adjourned. Not cancelled — adjourned. The same evidence still stands; the case wasn't heard, it was adjourned. When will the anger break out? When will the wrath break out? "As a thief in the night," both apostles say with one voice. Just as death comes as a thief in the night, so exactly does that day come, as a thief in the night. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us" — He is longsuffering, he says, for our sake,
"not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to metanoia — to repentance." He is longsuffering, he says, for the sake of some of us, because He sees that they will repent, that they will come inside, so that they too may come and be saved. You know how it is. It is like those good bus drivers who know what poverty and hardship are, the ones who take the last run at night. There are the loafers and so on: twelve o'clock, close the door, let's go. And outside somebody comes struggling along, running with his shopping basket. "Close it, let's go" — and they leave him standing there to take a taxi. Where is he to find that kind of money? He has been working all this time, and he would have to hand over a week's wages for the fare. He wasn't left behind because he arrived at five past twelve. The driver saw him coming!
The conductor shouts, the others inside shout at him, "Close it, we'll never get away." But Christ looks in the mirror at the ones who are coming, even the ones still coming round the corner — He sees them and waits for them and gathers them in. That is what He does, and He doesn't only do it now; He has always done it, and He does not take us exactly when we deserve to be punished. Thank God for that. He looks ahead over so many years and sees that tomorrow I will turn back; He sees that Paul must be seized on the road to Damascus; He sees that this other one must be there — and for every single person God arranges what is needed. And we take it and ask, where is God? You ask where God is for that other man — why don't you ask where God is for yourself? Are you so holy? Have you lived a holy life up to today?
By now God ought to have cut off a hundred pairs of ears and a hundred noses from you, with all that you have done. You look at the other man, at what he did, where he went wrong, whom he butchered, whom he wronged, and so on. Ah — but you and I, we're saints. These are words we ought to keep inside us. It is by this that the goodness and kindness of our Christ is measured: that He does not always act toward us as we deserve. He is not unyielding in such cases, and He does many things on our behalf that scandalise certain other people, cunning people — and all of it is His kindness. God — allow me — these are the things Peter writes. Poor Peter. Peter has heard words from our Christ...
...words that pierce his heart day and night. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brethren." The good I am doing for you tonight — praying that you will not take your own life, that you will not be condemned, giving you room to repent, and with that cock crowing to remind you, and I even make it a prophecy for you: before the cock crows you will deny Me three times — this is exactly what I want you to do for your own people tomorrow. Always be longsuffering; do not be hard and unyielding. Because if God...
...were to act in strict justice, then what David says would come true: "If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?" But we are always looking outward; we never look inward. We see other people's faults; we do not see our own. Don't you remember what we used to read in the old school reader — that a man carries two wallets: his own he has slung behind him, where everyone else can see it, and other people's he keeps in front of him where he can see it? That is what he is saying here: "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness" — as certain empty-headed people say, sitting and clicking their worry beads in the coffee shop. No, he says. "But is longsuffering toward us" — He is longsuffering, he says, for our sake,
"not willing" — because He does not want — "that any" — certain ones whom He is watching — "should perish." He sees that they are drawing near, that they will be saved — "but that all should come to repentance" — for everyone. Christ has worked longsufferingly in their lives and has added time to them. I have to confess from this pulpit that again and again Christ has shown me scandalous mercy; otherwise I would have been cast into Tartarus many years ago. In the years of the Occupation and in Albania I should have died seven times over, and by a miracle I did not die once. And that was not because of any righteousness of mine — there was no righteousness, I didn't even know what it was — but because of the mercy of God, who knew that I would turn back to Him.
He found a way to cover me until I came back, so that I could put up this small struggle, so that I could be saved, and so that the share of the blood Christ poured out for our own soul as well would not go to waste. Because every single person has backing; every person has a deposit of the blood of Jesus in the bank of God, in the bank of God's justice. And this is exactly what we ought to keep in front of us, the way the Hebrews had certain sayings written on the phylacteries on their foreheads and on the fringes of their garments. We read it every day. My God, if back then, my God, if back then, my Christ, if back then You had allowed this or that to happen, I would not be here today. Yes, that is how it is. And yet, and yet, the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. But it will come, he says. It will.
The longsuffering of God, my beloved, is like something I want to picture for you. Imagine a stalactite dripping. One drop every hundred years, and underneath it you have a glass, and the drops fall in. Drip. Drip. Drip. And so on. How do you know, my friend, when this longsuffering of God will overflow? How do you know whether today is the last day, whether today is the last drop of God's longsuffering? How do you know? How do you know that God will wait for you? Why should He wait for you, and why should He add more time to your life? What is the use of it, when you have wasted so many years, when for so many years you have done nothing? Last year, the year before, and this year too, you go on being exactly the same. And every day, when people ask you, or when you ask yourself, you say you are the same.
What your life needs is to become a completely different case. The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, the day in which the heavens will pass away with a roar. The heavens will vanish from in front of you. And where will they go, somebody asks me. Where you were before you came, I tell him. They will go to the same storehouse. You don't know the storehouse? He says, no, I don't know it. Then go and ask the heavens where you were before you came here and took your place, and you will find it in the same place.
They will pass away with a roar, and the elements will burn with heat and be dissolved. They will be burned up and they will collapse. The way a candle stands there and melts, the way iron melts, that is how they will be dissolved. What is the moon then, what is the sun, what is any of it? And the earth, and the works in it, our skyscrapers and all the rest, will be burned up. It is Peter who writes these things. Now allow me to go back a little, so that I can find Paul's mind on the very same subject.
In the first epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter five, verse one and following. Now concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that anything be written to you. There is no need, he says, for me to write these things to you. In other words, you ought to know them already, they ought to be on your mind always. For you yourselves know perfectly well, you know it, you are aware of it, that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. Do you know how they are going to rob you? If you knew how they were going to rob you, they would not manage it, and yet they catch you asleep and they rob you. For when they say, and I heard a man the other day saying exactly this, do you know what he told me? Peace and safety. There is rough weather headed your way.
And I answered him, for when they say peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them. Then destruction comes, he says. Right where you think you are already insured and safe, destruction comes. And here is the beautiful comparison, just as the birth pang, the labor pain, comes upon a woman. We are sitting here talking, and in a little while the birth begins, the pains begin, and she does not know how they will start, they come without warning. As the birth pang comes upon a woman with child, and they shall not escape. These labor pains, he says, cannot get away from this childbirth.
And the terrors and the losses, all the things we ourselves are about to suffer from that other business. But you, brethren, are not in darkness. If we want to believe that we are Christians, we must not be asleep in the dark. That the day should overtake you like a thief, so that the day would not catch us like a thief. So that the darkness would not seize us, so that it would not catch us asleep. For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness. He is saying this to the Thessalonians. But are we Thessalonians? That is the question. May we be. Though I am inclined to believe that I am not. It will catch us asleep. And it does catch many of us asleep.
I borrowed there from the mind of his brother, Paul. Because Paul calls Peter his brother, I don't know whether you knew that. Even though they differ in the way they know things, the two of them hold up the Church equally. And when a certain lady, she is not here with us tonight, had an icon made of the Apostle Paul, an honor to her, and was going to take it to church, the holy Apostle Paul came to her house that night and said, do not dare to bring it to church without my brother. That is why I said I borrowed from his brother. And now I come back to the mind of the fisherman, of Peter. Since all these things, he says, are going to be dissolved, my brothers, since everything is going to be undone, what sort of people ought we to be in holy conduct and godliness?
That is what we ought to be, after all that we are waiting for and all that is going to happen, looking for and hastening the coming, the Parousia, of the day of God, in which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fervent heat, they melt away. And we look for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise, and the promise is the announcement that the prophet Isaiah made in the Old Testament; according to His promise we look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since we look for these things, since we are waiting for these things, be diligent to be found by Him spotless and blameless, in peace.
For a person's soul to be spotless and undefiled, it has to be in close relationship with the Orthodox Church of Christ. That is where the wounds are healed, that is where the soul is healed in the Church, the soul that fell among the robbers is healed in that inn, with the help of the innkeepers, that is, of the clergy. Nowhere else is there any real care of the soul. Woe to those people who have fallen into heresies and have stayed far from the light, far off in the darkness. Along these lines, Father Ephraim, the abbot of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou on the Holy Mountain, an enlightened man, had gone abroad, both to America and
to Canada. Among the many strange things that happened to him there, this strange thing happened to him. There was a Protestant couple belonging to the heresy of the Baptists. And by the way, we have people like that here too. In the evening they were watching the people going into the house where confessions were being heard. Their so-called priest tried to keep them away from there and not even let them go in that direction. But the wife, who had a certain leaning of her own, insisted with her husband, and once the crowd had gone they went to meet this elder and hear him, even though they did not know Greek and our elder did not know English. But people were found who helped them talk together. The husband above all was left astonished, and he declared that he was not going to follow this group of the Baptists any longer, since it is a heresy. The husband told the priest, and a whole assault was launched against that family, and they even bound the lady not to go near that elder again for as long as he stayed there. But something inside kept informing her that they were not standing in a good place where they were, and that what this elder was saying was the right thing. And the outcome was that in the night the elder appeared, all filled with light,
and he called her and said this: my child, come out of the darkness and come into the light of Christ. She saw him so alive that she asked him many things, she spoke with him in the dream. And in the morning she says to her husband, I am leaving you. I am going over there. This and this and this is what Christ showed me tonight. Because I prayed and I said to Him, I want light, my Christ, where is the light? And He showed me where the light is. That they have the light and we do not have the light. And these are events of ten or twelve days ago, right now. Not something from that age, from this age. Miracles still happen. So then, let me go on. Let us be diligent, he says, to be found spotless and blameless, in peace.
And consider the longsuffering of our Lord to be salvation. And let us not regard this longsuffering of the Lord as if it were weakness or inability on God's part, but as salvation. This longsuffering of God is salvation. My God, be longsuffering with me, and I will pay You back everything. Just as our beloved brother Paul, and Peter is the one using these words, according to the wisdom given to him has written to you. As also in all his epistles he speaks in them of these things. In all his epistles, he says, Paul writes about the longsuffering of God and about the way a person is saved. In which, in which epistles, in them. In which are some things hard to understand. There are things in Scripture, he says, that a person does not understand easily,
which the untaught, certain people who interpret them their own way, and the unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. Here he shows that not everyone understands the Scriptures. That is why the Protestants take a Gospel each, every year, and each one builds a whole state of his own. The truth is here, the truth is there, the truth is in that one, the truth is in this one, and nobody has the truth. So then, after everything these two men have written, I would like to remind myself and to remind all of us. I do not know how many days, how many years, how many months, how many hours, how many minutes have been appointed for each one of us. Every person who comes into the world holds in his hand a lamp that is lit. God has put in it the amount of oil needed to keep him alive. Some people do not take care of it.
They do not take care to keep this lamp burning, because a person comes into the world in order to keep a lamp lit, just as happens with many people, for example, who bring home the Holy Light and want to keep it, to have the light of the Resurrection burning as long as they possibly can each year. They keep a second lamp going as well, and they lend the flame back and forth to each other. They make sure it does not go out on them, they keep it burning without ever sleeping, they are careful that an open window does not blow it out. They do everything carefully, and that is how they keep the lamp lit for a long time. This is exactly what a person has to do with himself, to take care of the foundation of his health, not to do crazy things, not to kill himself, not to break the natural laws and end up being scraped off some iron post at daybreak, in somebody's arms, on the very feast of the Ascension, of the Theotokos, of the Annunciation.
The lamp God gave him was to last eighty years, and at twenty or twenty-two he throws it away and goes up there. And God says to him, get away from here, because I did not call you; it counts as suicide. So I do not know how much each person has. But there is one thing I do know, from what I read myself and from what I think you understand as well. The good use of these things, which the wisdom of our Holy Fathers has set before us, is this. Add days to me, Lord, so that I may make a beginning of repentance. Never believe that you are already in a state of repentance. Never let yourselves believe that. Because you may have gone to confession yesterday, and the moment you walked out of the church you sinned with your eye, you sinned with your mouth, you sinned with your hand that same evening.
Every fall calls for a rising again. You fell, you were disgraced; are you not going to get up? And if you fell again, my good man, are you not going to get up again? And if you fell yet again, are you not going to get up again? However many times you fall in your life, will you not get up? That is what falling and rising again means. To fall is human; to stay fallen is satanic. Struggle! And when Christ sees that a person fears death, not the death where they put you down in the ground, but the death that is the separation of the soul from God, not the death that is the separation of the soul from the body, because the separation of the soul from the body is freedom. That one deserves applause. It is that second death, the separation of the soul from God, that is the death you should be afraid of.
So then, at every moment a person should not be thinking that he still has time to travel around; he should always take care to be ready, so that when he sees Christ coming he can say to Him, here I am, Lord. And my prayer is that through the intercessions of these holy chief Apostles, and of the twelve as well, and of the Three Hierarchs under whose blessing we live, we may obtain this promise. Not only we, but the whole world as well. Amen.

είναι 95 χρονών. Μιλούσα με μια κυρία, 95 ετών, μου λέει, βέβαια αυτά κύριε Παναγόπλε μόλις εδώ καταλάβω και μπω στην ηλικία θα όλα βέβαια τα προσέξω αυτά. Τώρα πότε θα μπει στην ηλικία, εγώ δεν ξέρω. Από πότε αρχίζει η ηλικία;
που άνοιξε τα Σαββίσνους και άνοιξε τις Κρουνούς και κατέκλυσε τον κόσμο και άφησε μόνο μια οικογένεια του Νώε, είναι ο ίδιος. Και δίκαιον Λωτ καταποντούμενον υπό τον αθέσμον ενασεργία αναστροφής ερίσατο, και φύλαξε λέει το Λωτ από αυτή τη διαστροφή των ανθρώπων που επήγαν εκεί τότε. Βλέμματι γάρ και ακοή ο δίκαιος εγκατικών εν αυτής, ημέραν εξημέρας ψυχήν δικαίων και ανώμης έρχισε βασάνισαν. Ήδε Κύριος Ευσεβής εκ πειρασμού ρίσεται, τους Ευσεβείς ξέρει λέει να τους φυλάξει, αδίκους δε, εισιμέραν κρίσεως κολαζομένους πυρήλ. Και ο σατανάς δεν έχει τιμωρηθεί σήμερα, γιατί πολλοί σκανδαλίζονται, πού είναι ο Θεός;
φωνάζει ο εισπράκτος, του φωνάζουν οι άλλοι πάνω, κλείσε εδώ δεν καφεύγουμε. Χριστός βλέπει από τον καθρέφτη αυτούς που έρχονται και από τη γωνία που έρχονται ακόμα, τους βλέπει και τους περιμένει και τους μαζεύει. Αυτό κάνει και δεν το κάνει μόνο τώρα, πάντοτε το κάνει και δεν μας παίρνει όταν πρέπει ακριβώς όπως μας αξίζει να τιμωρηθούμε. Ευχαριστούμε, αλλά προς τέτοιοι χρόνια βλέπει ότι εγώ αύριο θα γυρίσω, βλέπει ότι ο Παύλος στη Δαμασκό πρέπει να συλληφθεί, βλέπει ότι ο άλλος πρέπει εκεί και για όλους οικονομεί ο Θεός. Εμείς το παίρνουμε που είναι ο Θεός, ρωτάς που είναι ο Θεός για αυτόν, δεν λες για τον εαυτό σου που είναι ο Θεός; Είσαι τόσο Άγιος, έζησες Άγια μέχρι σήμερα;
