Summary
The speaker resumes an ongoing series on the Sermon on the Mount, recalling earlier talks on the Beatitudes and Christ's words that His disciples are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Those who attend church without communing blaspheme Christ indirectly, while those who commune at great feasts unconfessed and unrepentant are condemned by the speaker in the harshest terms as no better than Christ's killers, which is why Paul commands each to examine himself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. Good works are to shine rather than be displayed, so that others glorify the Father in heaven and neither benefactor nor beneficiary steals the glory owed to God, and the discourse closes with Christ's declaration that He came not to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill it, not one jot or tittle passing away, as He Himself showed at His baptism by fulfilling all righteousness.

In our past talks you will remember that we spoke about the Beatitudes of the Lord, and once we had finished the Beatitudes we moved on a little further and said a word or two about those words our Christ says, that you are the salt of the earth, and likewise, you are the light of the world. That, in fact, was our last talk, this past Thursday.
Now, allow me to have us follow, word by word, the thoughts the Lord goes on to give. After He said, you are the light of the world, on which we stopped yesterday and which took us a whole hour, He goes on to say: A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. That is, He presents Christians, the Apostles at that time, and by extension afterwards the successors of the Apostles, and all those who believed in Christ, as
a city that sits on top of a mountain. You know, of course the city is not always visible, because sometimes, say, a cloud, a mist as we call it, has covered it over, but only for a while, only for a moment. It does not stop being up there, even though it is covered by the bad weather. Many times certain people are covered over in the same way, people who are light, real light, but the malice of the world blackens their face, blackens their name, and for a moment they are lost from sight. Yet if there is patient endurance and humility, the time comes when it will lift,
the blackness will clear away and the city will shine out again in its splendour. What is sad is when sometimes what gets blackened is blackened deservedly. It is not a city giving light, it is not light, it was shallow all along. That is the ugly thing. If it is only an accusation and not a reality, that is, if the accusation does not stick, if there is nothing behind it, if it falls flat as we say, then there is nothing to fear. The fear is that what they are accused of might be true, that the things being covered over might be true. Thank you.
He says here: A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. With this image, a person will think of a moral mountain. A moral mountain built by Christ. The city of Christ, built by Christ up on the height, is His Church. The citizens of this Church are the Christians. The foundation stones are twelve, the Apostles, with Christ as the cornerstone. So here is a building of this kind, founded on the twelve Apostles, with Christ as the cornerstone.
Apostles, light, shining, and with Christians who have been born again. However much the wicked tongues may want it, however much Satan may want to cover them over, to blacken them, to slander them, he will not manage to do anything. It is impossible for it to be hidden. It cannot be done, He says, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. I say that even if for a moment some mist, as we call it, some black cloud, wants to settle on that summit, very quickly, because of the sun, it will break up, and the windowpanes will start to shine again, the houses will shine, the people will shine. That is roughly how Christ presents
His Church too, and that is how it ought to be. Now of course many times we are caught out, both the clergy and the laity, with the Gospel in our hand, mind you, but we are caught guilty, and that is the ugly thing, since we ought to be that kind of city that has nothing to fear, that cannot be touched, that is never in danger, and unfortunately there are moments when we are left exposed. Now, if we narrow the meaning and ask what the real Church is, because we say Church and we always mean the clergy, we say Church and leave ourselves outside it. We know that the Church is neither the clergy, nor the nominal crowd, the merely incidental members. The Church is the real clergy and
the real people of this Church. The gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Against that other so-called church which is not the Church, the powers of Satan will indeed prevail. The real Church is not a certain number of clergy and a certain number of laity, of whatever standing, in faith and in character. No, it is those elect who remain faithful in humility. It is those who have attained and lived the Beatitudes we spoke about earlier. Because all of this shines out from everything He said earlier.
He will be poor in spirit, he will be one who mourns, he will be a peacemaker, he will be meek, he will be this and this and this. And then, do to him whatever you like, say to him whatever you like, he will always give light, he will always shine, his presence will always be felt, no one is going to cover him over. So this is what we are saying, and I say it to you by extension: the gates of Hades will not prevail against it, not against any so-called church, not against any clergyman or any layman just because his identity card says Christian, but against the one who is organically joined to Christ. We have Christians who go to church and do not receive Holy Communion. They are not Christians, they are choosing to blaspheme Christ, they are telling Him we have no need of You. They do not blaspheme Him directly, but they blaspheme Him indirectly.
And there are people who go to church on the great feasts and receive Holy Communion without Holy Confession and without repentance. These are acting like those who rejected Christ; they are rejecting Christ themselves. That is, to have His blood on them, as those back then threw it away, so these people today throw away the blood of Christ into a cesspit, into a filthy and defiled soul, unrepentant, uncleansed. They are no different at all from those who put Christ to death, and they will be cast into the depths. That is why Paul got ahead of them and told them: and quite a few die, because they do not examine themselves and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. But let each one examine himself, he says, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. And we go up there just like that, because it is a feast day, for the good of it and so on, for many years to come. Unrepentant, unconfessed, unbelieving, unreconciled, with so many things left unsettled for years.
and we use it for good luck, we are exactly the same as those Jews, we pour out the blood of Christ into a soiled, filthy, dirty place and nothing more, with no other purpose, and we will share their fate if we do not turn back, if we do not repent, if we do not weep. That is why we must not do this. So we are not talking about those Christians. We are talking about Christians who fear God, people who reckon they have done nothing good in their lives, who mourn day and night, not by wearing black, but who mourn in the soul and have put into practice the beatitude, blessed are those who mourn. We are talking about people who are peacemakers, who are meek, who are merciful, who are, well, such people cannot help but be a city. No one can touch them, no tongue, let anyone who wants to try, let all the tongues in the world gather together.
There may come a moment, as I told you, when some cloud settles up there, but it will break up in a little while and the truth will come to light, that the matter was not like that at all, it was something quite different. That is why He says, if you really are the light of the world, it is impossible for anyone to hide you, because you are like a city on a mountain, and no one can hide you. And He continues on the same plane, in the same line of reasoning, and says next: Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. It is the same as what came before, but He says all of this to confirm His words.
Earlier He said Light, then He said City, now He says Lamp. The lamp is an image matching the one He gave before. The lamp that is kindled is the soul of man. He is not lighting some lantern, He is not lighting some oil lamp. It is the soul of man. He lights a lamp, that is, the soul receives its light from outside, from outside, and it is kindled, and this lamp is kindled at Baptism. That coal, that black soul, that piece of charcoal turns red, it catches fire, it changes, it becomes something different, and from that lamp the light has
to be passed on to others as well. Many times we borrow light from the light. We receive, and we pass the flame on to others, because from one who has nothing you can receive nothing. Be sanctified and sanctify, be illumined and illumine. If I do not receive, if I am not illumined, if I am not kindled myself, how am I going to kindle you?
So He says here: They do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel to hide it. We have an obligation to pass it on to the other person as well, because it is in this way that faith is handed on from person to person like a flame, the light, the truth, by which the world finds its bearings. Think of when the power station was built at Keratsini. Who was the first to get light from that light? The immediate neighbours. Then the grid was extended and others got it too.
Then the grid was extended and others got it too. Then the grid was extended further. It reached here.
It reached Tourkovounia, it reached out to the far edges of town. That is how it is. If it had not been passed as far as us, we would not have it either. But we have no right to keep it, because we received it. Rather, we have an obligation to pass it on. That is how it is. We have nothing of our own. When I hold a lit candle here and lend it to someone else, and their candle is lit from mine, does my own candle lose anything? It loses nothing. It is the same when you receive from our Christ. He gives, and we receive, and we must pass it on to another. It is not that we lose anything. We lose nothing. But many people are not willing to pass it on to anyone else. For example, they have one talent, and they prefer
to take it with them down to Hades rather than hand the flame on to another person for the good, for the benefit, for the service of others. That person reckons the light is his own, the patent is his own, the discovery is his own. It is not God's, God did not give it to him, God did not enlighten him about it, that is what he believes: it was his own abilities, his own hard work, his own cleverness. And this talent, this light which is given by God for the service of people, for his own good and for others, he makes his own property, and he does not do what the Lord goes on to say, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven, and say Glory to God that someone was found, that a person was found and helped me where no one else could help me.
People hide it. They do not pass on God, they do not pass on the skill, they do not pass on the secret, they do not pass on the cleverness, they do not pass on the knowledge, they do not pass on the truth. It matters to me, and it does not matter to you. That is, you see to yourself. Why does this happen? It is as if I climb up there and then, once I am up, I kick the ladder away so no one else can come up. Is that brotherly? Let alone godly, is it even human? No. Why should the other person not come up? What does it cost you? You will stay here a while, then you will go. Because he too, when the light is lit, he says,
So when anyone receives the light and becomes a lamp, he must keep in mind that the lamp's light is borrowed. It is not his own. And since it is understood to be borrowed, he must, as He was saying, give it, give it to another, and that one must give it to another. The Apostle Paul said some beautiful words to Timothy, a piece of advice: take care, he tells him, what you have heard from me, pass it on to faithful people, who will be able to teach others also.
Don't let it stop here. It goes further on to set another fire. And further on to set another fire. Further on. Not to be buried, not to stay here. "Who will be able to teach others also." You see what is happening now. What has been discovered, what has been brought to light over so many years. The spread of this cassette that we circulate. And what else, you know. That is what happens. What is kindled here we take over there and send it off to light a fire somewhere else. They take it and go further on and light a fire somewhere else again. Iraq, for instance: I got a letter today. What would a person over there have to say? Think what goes on out there, in the world, among people who know nothing at all. They have an obligation. They have a duty, and an account will be asked of us. You are a lamp, sir. Your light is borrowed; it is not your own. You are not the source of the light. I am the light.
You shine with someone else's light. You are not your own source of light. You shine with another's light, and if I turn the screw on you — because our Christ is an engineer, He has His screwdrivers, and if He goes and gives that little screw a turn — well, let me tell you how skilful He is. It is He who works on us and holds us up; that is why we understand and see these things and hear these things and have the heart to sit here at all. Otherwise it is like the brother who got up and left: I could not take in anything more, I saw and I went. So we have an obligation, that is, we must admit that what we know and what we do and what we read are not ours; they are His, and we are only using them.
So we must give light, and we must keep ourselves hidden underneath, quietly, humbly. Now notice a detail that must not pass unnoticed. Look at what it says here — or rather, look at how it says it: they light a lamp, and they do not put it under the bushel, but on the lampstand they put it. The lamp does not set itself in place. Someone else places the lamp there.
And there is another detail here, and this detail has to do with everyone who aspires to speak about Christ.
Although — the Ascension, the Annunciation, Hesychios the Priest, the Jesus Prayer.
Officially! Whoever passes on the truths must have permission from Him, so that He places him there and he does not place himself — not only here, to speak, but in the Church, to serve the Liturgy, in the diocese, to govern, in the city and so on. Others must set him there; he must not set himself there. When a man puts himself forward, even if he has the ability, he is leaving his own ego underneath. All the Fathers who were called to take up office in the Church ran away.
They would not accept, and many of them were cornered, and only afterwards, under great pressure, they accepted. A man ought to be afraid, because in one place it says through the prophet: "Why is it that you recount My wonders?" Who put you there? Who sent you? And I would point you to another chapter as well, if you have noticed it. In the second chapter of John: many believed because of the signs they saw, and they wanted to work alongside Him. But He did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew what was inside those people, how they would fall away later on. A moment's enthusiasm is not enough. God does not entrust Himself to you; He is sparing you. He knows that in a little while you will fall from that height, and He does not want you to perish, to be condemned to Hell, so that others may be saved. He will not spend you so that someone else may gain.
He wants you to be gained first. There is something strange in all this. And yet we are all obliged not to hide what God has mercifully given us. The joy we feel, and also the sorrow we feel, the penthos, the mourning for sin, over the evil we have done to Christ. And what evil have we done Him? How have we offended Him?
There are people with a sense of honour who, when they have offended some person here on earth, drop their heads every time they see them, or try to avoid them in the street, because they have not the eyes, they have not the courage, to look at them. And what about before God? So this is a matter with many sides to it. The lamp never sets itself in place. Someone else sets it there, so that it may give light in a particular spot — as you know, we put lamps where they are needed, where they will help a passageway, a workplace, a dwelling and so on. So, in spite of the obligation we have, always with care. And if we do manage to do something, it is not we who do it. He does it through us, and we must never take for ourselves the glory that belongs to Him. Never say, "I did it, do you know how much I did, I taught you, I brought you to new birth, I made you what you are." This "I" must not be there. God, through me. Once a soul thanked me and said something to me. "If it had not been for you," she said — my blood ran cold. My blood ran cold.
That is blasphemy — "if it had not been for me," or "if it had not been for God." It is like saying: I was thirsty, and if this tap had not been here for me to drink, I would have died. If it had not been for the tap — or if it had not been for the Marathon reservoir? What would the tap do without Marathon? Do you feel it? Whether you say "I quenched your thirst," or whether you look for the thanks, you are stealing God's glory, and you will gain nothing at all. It is not to your own advantage to do such a thing. Do you understand? So be careful in the cases I have described. Then He goes on to say this: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Not that they should glorify you, wag their tails at you, feel themselves in your debt, feel ashamed before you, be afraid of you. No! I am obliged to do the good, and he is obliged to glorify God. If he wants to, for his own benefit, let him also remember the instrument God used to help him. Let him remember the step God sent him so that he could climb. But these are two different things; that is his own account. Not the step's account, not the measuring rod's. No. When two people help one another — for example, I have ten drachmas,
and the other man needs those ten drachmas, and I give them to him. So I am the one showing mercy and he is the one receiving mercy. I am the benefactor and he is the one benefited. Now here a certain art is needed, if both of us are to have our reward. He must never forget the God who sent me and had me give him the ten. And I must never forget that the ten I gave, I gave to Him. He, for his part, must also not forget me, as the instrument that God sent. And I, for my part, must never ask a thank-you from him. Then we shall both have our reward. Otherwise the ten drachmas are wasted, and he is lost, and I am lost.
It is not simply a matter of helping someone and putting him in your debt. Who are you, to be helping? And where did you find the knowledge to help? And where did you find the money to help? And who gave you the strength to help? And who gave you the standing, so that you have the connections and the personal weight to pick up the telephone and act and help? Who gave you these things? Did you bring them out of your mother's womb? They are all from God; they are gifts God gave you, and the more He gave you, the more responsibility He will require of you. Much was given you, much account you will render; little was given you, over little you will render account. So everything a person does, he is obliged to do within the limits of his powers — whether by word, or by deed, or even by a simple gesture. A person may not even have the power of speech,
he may have only his nous, his inner mind, but inwardly he can still do good to another. By praying. By writing with his own hand. With his nous and with his hand. Write to him: do this and this. Go there. Do not do that. Watch out for the other thing. Let us do this. And out of all that the other person, at that moment, will say: Glory to God. Go with His blessing. "Who are you, where do you live?" Just go. There is no need for where you live. Because certain people hand over their references and their card too, so that you can ring them up and say thank you. What did Christ do when He did good? He went away. "Where is He?" "How should I know where He is? I was blind. When I turned round I could see, and I never saw Him." And the paralytic: "Where is He?" "How should I know? He told me to take up my bed, I took it up, and He was gone." He does not stay around to collect a thank-you.
nor is it for you to be applauded, nor for your name to be written up there in big letters among the benefactors, nor to be printed in the newspaper the way certain names are printed nowadays. God will repay you. Act, He says, in this way, beautifully and humbly, so that in front of the people who will see your good works — and they will glorify God for your good behaviour, your kind word, your patience with others, your love, your refusal to bear a grudge, your humility — and they will glorify your Father who is in heaven. "Let it so shine" — beautifully, notice — not "let it so be displayed," but "let it so shine." The works speak for themselves. There is no need for you to put them on show, no need to ask to be entered on the list of benefactors or donors I mentioned earlier. The work speaks all by itself; people will find out. There is no need for you to say it.
"Let it so shine," not "let it so be displayed" — whereas with us, if we cannot work out in advance what we will get out of it, very often we do not do what we ought to do. So those who do act, those who are truly lights of God, humble and doing good, give light, give warmth, and pass it on to others, and by their whole way of life they become the reason that God is glorified. Glory to God. There was a man who came along. We say it ourselves, and in fact very often this "Glory to God" escapes even from the lips of people who do not believe, people who are not expecting any favour, people who are expecting exactly the opposite — and they find help, not according to their works, but according to the mercy of God.
It escapes him and he says, Glory to God, even though he blasphemes God, or does not even believe in God at all. But finding himself with nothing to hold on to at that moment, he speaks a truth which once again is glory for God, and for us it is something too. And He continues, speaking to them, because a person has to know the meaning in order to draw it out, and He says next: Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish, but to fulfil. He says this to them. The scribes and the Pharisees tell you that I am a destroyer of the Mosaic Law. No, I am no destroyer of the Mosaic Law. He is speaking now to the people, He is telling His disciples so that they may know,
I am not a destroyer, whatever these gentlemen call me and slander me with. No. But also: I did not come, He says, to abolish the Law, but to fulfil the Law. And "to fulfil" carries two meanings: to accomplish, to bring to pass, and to complete. I fulfil and I complete. That is why the Bible Society paraphrase, the one all the heretics use, cannot render both of those meanings. It will put "accomplish"; it will not also put "complete." But "to fulfil" means both: to accomplish and to complete. I did not come to abolish; I am not against the Mosaic Law, He says, as the scribes and the Pharisees tell you, but I came to fulfil it — that is, to accomplish it, to complete it, to bring it to its full reality. This is the patristic interpretation; this is the correct one. And He goes on and says:
Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or one tittle shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. That is to say, the One who came to fulfil, fulfils all righteousness. And this "one iota" that He speaks of is a clause He lays down for the Christian, and He tells him:
you shall not depart a hair's breadth from My word, from My commandments. You cannot trample on some of them and keep others, wipe out the ones you do not like and do the ones you do like. No — the whole Law. Or when He says that it will not pass unnoticed: the man will be punished, that is, he will be condemned to Hell, the man who over even the smallest thing wants to say, "this one does not matter" — because it was not a man who wrote it, it was not a man who laid it down as law. If a man had laid it down, I would say, well, he is only a man. God laid it down as law, and not one of these things was laid down for God's creature to sidestep it or insult it or shrug it off, but to keep it. I do not know if you remember when our Christ came face to face with Baptism. John,
out of reverence, in a manner of speaking, did not want to baptize Him. He says to Him, I, baptize You? Impossible, he says. It is I who need to be baptized by You. Do you remember what the Lord answered him? "Let it be so now." Leave all that aside for the moment. "It is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness." Is it not written? Did you not receive a commandment from My Father to baptize? Did I not become man? As man, must I not be the first to keep My Father's law? How could I possibly avoid it? And if He, coming down to us like this — God keeps the law — then who are we to say, "this one does not matter"? Because there are so many things about which we say, "it does not matter," and I hear a great many men and women who say
…that if Christ came today, He would put a lot of water in His wine. Do you hear it? Did Christ have need of us? Do you understand? So Christ would water down His wine, He wouldn't say things so strictly, He wouldn't push things so far. Second thing: don't let Satan deceive us. Let me take the chance to tell you. Don't let Satan deceive us. Satan is a craftsman. Satan is cunning. Satan is experienced. He has an experience such as I have described to you before.
…Satan is a being seven thousand five hundred years old. You understand what he knows, what he has seen, what he has done, what he has managed to achieve.
Satan will settle for it if you throw him out of the whole house. Throw him out of the sitting room, throw him out of the dining room, throw him out of the hall, throw him out of the kitchen, throw him out of the bathroom, throw him out of the storerooms, throw him out, throw him out, throw him out, until he ends up down by the front door and just sits there in a little corner. He'll settle for that. Let him sit there. Let him have nothing in the rest of the house. Because he is certain he will win the whole house back again. On that tiny scrap, on that hangnail of a thing, Satan takes his stand and makes war on a person. On that tiny scrap Satan takes his stand; he is quite capable of standing there and making war on a person. And whatever you leave him — do you know what it is? It's the thing God told you to do, and you don't do it properly. That thing you hand over to Satan.
…Satan collects many offcuts of ours, and out of them he will stitch our shroud to wrap us up for Hell. All of it: a little of this, a little of that, this doesn't matter, I don't think that matters, I don't imagine the other one matters, let me keep that one sin, and so on. All of these are the devil's share. And so we are left full of gaps. These things are missing before God. It is already like a moth-eaten garment. That is exactly what the clothing of our soul will be like — eaten through with holes, from all the things that are missing. What is the hair, now — is God going to fuss over hair? What is it, is God going to fuss over short sleeves? What is it, I put on jeans, is God going to fuss over that? Are these the things God concerns Himself with?
…what I got up to today, and this and that. I didn't have ten children, I had four; others have none at all; I've had seven abortions and others have had only four — so we're all the same. And so we pick up other people's faults to cover our own. And as our wise men used to say, the one who takes other people's faults to cover his own is like a man washing himself with mud. He takes the mud from someone else's filth to wash off his own. Can he get clean, or can he not? It's sheer foolishness. What of it. And yet — I didn't handle that well today. I shouldn't have let my tongue loose just then. I shouldn't have said that word. Ask the Christians who have made some progress. How many times do they not repent like a dog because they opened their mouth. A conversation ends, an evening with friends ends, and so on.
…forgive me — I'm speaking of those under a spiritual father. Those who are working to build something. I'm not talking about the others who come with their little candle, or who come to the sermon for forty years and haven't taken a single step forward. I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about those who have the fear of God inside them. Ask them how they feel afterwards. They repent like a dog. Why did I say it? And what good did it do me? How did Satan get me in his hands again.
…I said things I shouldn't have; now I have to go to a confessor, I can't receive Holy Communion. He feels it at once, grace informs him at once, a war breaks out inside him. Why did he do it? Could he have avoided it? Was there any purpose in it? Wasn't it his ego pushing itself forward? Because in the lies we tell, in the words we say, we are putting ourselves on show — that we were something once, or that we are something now, and a thousand other things. Do you have the right to use yourself in that way? Do you have the right? You do not have the right. Does your tongue have the right to throw words into the air? Does your ear have the right to listen to anything at all? It does not. These things were not given to you for that kind of work. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Where are these things in us? Do we really live and move and have our being for Christ and for our soul? No — these are only labels. And so Christ says to us here, in this sense: Amen, I say to you — truly I tell you; that is what Amen means. Till heaven and earth pass away — heaven and earth, He says, will pass away. Or when…
…not one tittle — not even a little iota written underneath — shall pass from the Law till all be fulfilled. It will be carried out. It will not be erased, it will not be bypassed, it will not be brushed aside; it will be fulfilled, an account will be demanded, this thing will be brought to pass. And then He adds one more thing after that, where He says:
…if, then, someone breaks, or ignores, or tramples on one of these least commandments — those little tiny ones that are nothing at all, as we say — and teaches people to do the same, and says to others, oh, that thing is nothing, and teaches people so, he shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Least means worthless, good for nothing, useless — he is no use for the Kingdom of Heaven. That is what it means. But whoever shall do and teach them, whoever carries them out…
…and passes them on to the next person as far as his strength allows. Shall do and shall teach. So then: he shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. You know, the Kingdom of Heaven is a matter of details. Small details. Many small things make one great thing. You don't need boulders in a ship for it to sink; it sinks with sand too. And David says, from the sins of my heel — the things we tread underfoot like empty matchboxes: that's nothing, and that's nothing, and the other thing is nothing, and the next thing is nothing. From the sins of the heel — the very things we don't take into account, that we never reckon up.
…for me to do. I'm a man, and many times I don't do a certain thing so as not to upset my wife, because my wife doesn't want that thing. I'm a woman, and because my husband doesn't want that, I don't do it. Because I love him, because I respect him. My husband says so. Now tell me: and when it is God who says so? How is it that we adjust it and say, oh, it doesn't matter with God? What do we mean by that? Because He doesn't draw His sword on us? And so what — because He lowers His rod now, because we are living in the age of grace? And so what? Where is the reverence? That is why we have no fear of God. The one who does fear God takes care over everything. Everything. He takes care over everything: that outwardly he is right with God, and inwardly he is right with God.
…in his dealings, in his behaviour, in how he decorates his home, in the whole of the rest of his conduct. He takes care over all the details, so that God won't catch him anywhere with anything shoddy. There must be nothing written against him in God's ledger. Because He will say: if you wouldn't do the small thing, the great thing you'll leave in a ditch. Isn't that so? If the small thing — well, since it's nothing at all, then do it, since it's nothing. Will God bother about the cigarette, for instance? Since the cigarette is nothing at all, and God isn't interested in it — then give it up. If I dye my hair, will God take notice? Then don't dye it, is what I say to you. Isn't that right? Think it over. If I shave my legs, will God take notice? Then don't shave them — since it's nothing at all.
Have the courage to do it. And if you can't bring yourself to give it up, then you haven't understood what the word God means, and you haven't understood what the iota or the tittle means. Heaven and earth, He says, will pass away. That doesn't concern me. But these things, He says, will be required of us, and they will come to pass. That is what He says. You'll say to me: and what about you, my friends — have you got your own house in order? I have not. Pray that I do. But we are deceived, and we lead others astray, if we imagine that Christ is going to modify His Gospel and His Law. He does not modify it. He does not modify it.
That is exactly why He is asking here for substance. We are outward people, just like the Pharisees. Exactly. That is why He says: for I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, you shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. The scribes and the Pharisees were pious in outward form, but in substance they were impious. And this is what happens with us. In outward form they were pious, but in substance they were impious. This is what happens with us. Outwardly — go inside the houses.
…there you'll see oil lamps, there you'll see icons, there you'll see all sorts of things. Now go on to the wardrobe and have a look. Go on into the bedroom and see what goes on. Go into the bathroom and see what goes on. And then you'll see that yes, we do wear the Pharisees' label, but inwardly there are wolves. And Christ is the one who told Samuel to be careful, when he was sent to the house of Jesse the Bethlehemite in Bethlehem, to anoint a king in Saul's place. Take care, He says to him: you human beings look at what appears on the surface. I, God, look at the heart, I see what a person actually does. I don't look at what he says; I see how he thinks, how he acts in the details, how he behaves in the small things — because I told you earlier that Christianity is a sum of details. Suppose you go into a house to live in it where the concrete has been poured, the four walls are up, the slabs are laid, and so on, and you walk inside. It is always the fine finishing work that makes the flat fit for a person to move in and live there. It is the fine work and the costly work. Suppose you walk into a church building where the four walls have been raised — is that a church yet? Not unless the icons are put in, not unless the frescoes are painted, not unless the rest is added, so that it becomes lovely, so that it becomes fitting, so that it brings a person to katanyxis, to compunction. Can it, or can't it? That is exactly how it is here too, down to the finest fold. I said as much to you at the beginning: pay attention. You don't read Holy Scripture. But do read these three chapters. The fifth, the sixth and the seventh of Matthew, or of Luke, because they say the same things.
…and you will remember me, whether I was right or not. That is all for this evening.

να μεταδοθεί και στους άλλους. Πολλές φορές δεν δανειζόμεθα φως εκ του φωτός. Λαμβάνουμε εμείς και μεταλαμπαδεύουμε στους άλλους, διότι εκ του μη έχοντος ουκ αν λάβει. Αγιαστήνε και αγιάσου, φωτιστείνε και φωτίθε. Αν εγώ δεν λάβω, δεν φωτιστώ, δεν ανάψω εγώ, πώς θα ανάψω εσάς;
αυτός για να κερδιθεί πρώτος. Υπάρχει κάτι παράξενα μέσα εδώ το θέμα αυτό. Παρότι όλοι είμεθα υποχρεωμένοι να μην κρύψουμε αυτό που μας ελέησε ο Θεός. Τη χαρά που αισθανόμεθα, αλλά και τη θλίψη που αισθανόμεθα, το τέμφος για το κακό που κάναμε στον Χριστό. Τι κακό δηλαδή του κάναμε, που τον προσβάλλαμε;
πολλά ρετάλια ο σατανάς δικά μας, με τα οποία θα φτιάξει το σαβανό μας να μας τύζει στην κόλα. Όλα αυτά, το λίγο το ένα, το λίγο το άλλο, το δεν πειράζει αυτό, το δεν νομίζω εκείνο, το δεν φαντάζουμε το άλλο, εγώ να την έχω την αμαρτία και ούτω καθεξής. Όλα αυτά είναι μερίδια του διαβόλου. Και άλλοι μονόμαστεν ημερακρισιώς. Λείπουν από τον Θεό. Πέκεται ήδη σκοροφαγωμένο ρούχο. Έτσι ακριβώς θα είναι το ένδυμα της ψυχής μας. Σκοροφαγωμένο όλο. Από αυτά που λείπουν. Τι είναι το μαλλί τώρα, με το μαλλί θα πιαστεί ο Θεός; Τι είναι, με τα κοντομάνικα θα πιαστεί ο Θεός; Τι είναι, κόβαλα εγώ τζιν, θα πιαστεί ο Θεός; Αυτά απασχολείται ο Θεός;
