Summary

Continuing the series on the Beatitudes, the lecture moves from 'you are the salt of the earth' to Christ's next saying, 'you are the light of the world,' with the lamp set on a stand. In the Logos was life, and this life is the light kindled in the soul at baptism, symbolized by the baptismal candle and guarded by the commandments, since one enters paradise not by works but by keeping unextinguished the light freely given. The lecture closes with a moral appeal: the world wants example rather than words, many Christians are extinguished lamps who hunt others' faults to cover their own, and the Orthodox clergy are instruments of grace rather than papal representatives, while repentance and Good Samaritan mercy remain the only road home.

Tonight our subject will be the continuation of what we have been saying. In our last talk, as we went on with the Beatitudes from the fifth chapter of Matthew,

we spoke about what our Christ says: "You are the salt of the earth; and if the salt loses its savour, with what shall it be salted?" Tonight let us speak about something else he says: "You are the light of the world." And he adds, "A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do men light a lamp and put it…"

…under the bushel, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Last time we saw that the Christian in general is the salt: he preserves society, he keeps it from rotting, from being corroded, from decaying; he seasons it with his life. Tonight the Lord sets before us another quality: that at the same time a person is the light of others.

That is, the role of the lamp. The light is what helps a person not to stumble, not to be broken to pieces, as we say. The disciples, who hear this first from the mouth of our Christ — "you are the light of the world" — have a secondary significance, because the real light is he himself, and they receive from the Light. Do you remember what John says about John the Forerunner in his Gospel, in the first chapter? "He was not the light" — John, that is.

Our Forerunner is not the light; he comes to bear witness concerning the light. And so the light was Christ; and interpreting this, he says, "That was the true light, which, coming into the world, enlightens every man." So the apostles have a secondary significance in relation to the real light. They received from the light; they received light and they pass light on to others. But the starting point of the light, the source, is Christ himself — that is what I want to say. Besides, the Lord himself — I don't know whether you ever study — you will find that he says this in John, chapter eight, verse twelve:

"I am the light of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." He is the light. So they received from the light — a passing on of the flame took place. That is why I tell you that the apostles have a secondary significance as light: they receive, taking from the real light, from the source of the light. Our Christ is presented to us as Light and as Life, as the Author of creation, as God, as everything; all these qualities that benefit us are found in our Christ. Allow me, then, since Christ is the light, to present him to you under four aspects —

the role the Word (Logos) plays in the affairs of mankind. First, then: the Word was with God, and he is also God. John writes — and I find it there — in his Gospel, in the first chapter of John, which is the Waterloo of the Jehovah's Witnesses: "In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." And the second verse says again, "The same was in the beginning with God." This proves that Christ was God, that he is God. The divine Chrysostom, interpreting this phrase "with God," explains it like this: he was always with the Father, just as the Father was never

bereft of his Word. For the Father is not bereft of the Word; the Word did not come into being afterwards, in time, as the Jehovah's Witnesses say, as Arius said — that there was God, and the Word was not, that there was once a God without the Word. Never: the Father was never bereft of the Word. He was God with God, in his own hypostasis, his own person — one essence, he says, and two persons. That is how Chrysostom interprets it. And this Word also stood in relation to the world; he played a part toward the world. John says, "All things were made through him" — Christ made all things. When we say "Holy God," we mean the Father; when we say "Holy Mighty," we mean the Son, through whom all things were made.

"Holy Immortal" — and by him all things are held together. "All things," he says, "were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made." Nothing came into being apart from him. That covers all things. Now the Word in relation to humanity: "In him was life" — and we said this is Christ — there is life, and the life is the light of men. Paul says, "Do not quench the Spirit"; he presents it as a fire, as a candle, as a light. And when was this light kindled in a person? At Baptism.

On the day a person is baptised, then it is kindled, and their poor little soul, which was black, begins to glow. This is what the candle we light and hold on the day of baptism symbolises, whether the person is grown up or a small child. "In him was life, and the life was the light of men." Christ is the one who gives life, who kindles people's souls, those coals. For a person is born with a soul like a coal, with a black soul, a satanic soul, and on the day of his baptism that soul is kindled — and that is why this wick needs care.

That we do not behave foolishly, that we do not commit sins and so leave a little window open through which Satan comes in and puts out for us the light Christ kindled in us on the day of our baptism. That is what keeping the commandments is for. Their purpose is not to take a person into Paradise. Their purpose is to preserve the wick, this light that Christ kindled. It is Baptism that takes you into Paradise. Guard the light that has already been given to you freely at Baptism. A person does not go into Paradise by his own works. Guard it. The commandments are what we call the "thou shalt not, thou shalt not." They are the guards that keep Satan far away, so that he does not come in and put out for you the light

that our Christ kindled on the day of regeneration, the day of baptism. "In him was life," he says, "and the life was the light of men." And further, our Christ came for us in our enslavement to sin, and Christ is the light. "And the light shines in the darkness" — he wants people to walk rightly — "and the darkness comprehended it not." Sin did not understand this purpose that our God had, to enlighten every man — every man who is willing. For whoever does not will it, not even the Holy Trinity will pour itself out upon him.

A person is all-powerful in this world; he is all-powerful where the matter of his salvation is concerned. If he does not will it, not even the Holy Trinity itself can save him, because it respects his free will. So the word "Logos," the Word, who is also Light, who is also Power, who is also Life, who is also God, who is also Creator — of course he appears here for the first time, if I may put it that way, as John sets out the text. He appears here first, "in the beginning." And yet the Word was present in the Old Testament too. If, for example, we open the Psalms

at Psalm thirty-two, verse six, we will find it saying this: "By the word of the Lord the heavens were established." The Lord is God; and by the Word of God, through the Word of God, the heavens were established. So the Word is there, dimly, in the Old Testament as well. John had other things in mind, and he wrote as he did in the sense I explained to you a moment ago. It is the Waterloo of the Jehovah's Witnesses, because they reject the divinity of Jesus. Christ, then, is the source of life and the source of light — and the apostles received from that light.

And we, when we are baptised, receive from the light; and we must take care that our life agrees with the confession we made at our baptism, so that it may be wholly luminous — so that others may see and be guided, and not stumble. Because the life many of us live is such that we are not even to be found at worship. Many Christians are not light; they darken other people's lives, and they trip people up. The apostles left no shadow in their lives for people to stumble over; people were guided. How did they hand it on to them? In writing and by word of mouth, and by deeds, not only by words.

The threefold pattern — praxis, the active ascetic life; theoria, contemplation; and the written and the spoken word — these are what help a person to see rightly that this is the teaching. What does a merely human teaching say? What are these words and these works that people can do, that anyone at all can do? The Holy Spirit, through David, in the Old Testament, in Psalm thirty-five, verse nine, says — and you will remember it too, for our Church has borrowed it and placed it in the Doxology — "For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see light." These are the words of the Holy Spirit, written down by David a thousand years before Christ. That is to say, Christ is the fountain

of life and the fountain of light. So the apostles, being in contact with the source of the light, received it and passed the flame on to others; and those to others, and those to others still — and it is from them that we too have received it, if indeed we have received it and have kept the Christian faith. Again John says that he is "the one who gives life to the world." Christ is the giver of life to the world. He also says that he is the Resurrection and the Life — Christ, the Word (Logos). He also says that he is the true God and eternal life — Christ. And this life, which is the true God, is the light of men, from which the apostles received.

The divine Chrysostom says: he did not say "the light of the Jews," but universally, the light of men — of all men. For Christ did not come into the world for the Jews only. Beginning from the Jews, from Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria, to the ends of the earth — he came for the whole world. He is the New Adam, who came to give life and light to those sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, the descendants of the old Adam, the apostate, the disobedient, the fallen one. For every human being, as Paul indicates, comes into the world estranged from God — black, yellow, green, that is not the point — he comes into the world estranged.

So the New Man came to take us up, to give life to and to enlighten all the sons of Adam. That is also why the Cross of our Lord was four-armed. It is not the way they sketch it, as you have seen, like a stake, like a pole. It was four-armed, because Christ came for the whole world, for the four quarters of the horizon. Besides, the word "Adam," as I will explain some other time, is made up of the four initial letters of the four points of the horizon: A-D-A-M — Anatoli, the East; Dysis, the West; Arktos, the North; Mesimvria, the South. Adam — the whole world; and Christ came for the whole world. So, says the divine Chrysostom, it is not for the Jews only.

He did not say, "the light of the Jews," but universally, the light of all men — of all men, that is what that word means, of all men. That is why so much preparation was made beforehand for Christ, so that anyone of good will, whether he lived in those days or came afterwards, provided he is willing to study the Old Testament and the New Testament, will find Christ both before Christ and after Christ, because he is the person on the basis of whom every man will be judged. God the Father will not judge him; Jesus will judge man. The Apostle Luke, in his writing of the Acts — have you never read it? — in his fourth chapter,

verse twelve, says this: "Neither is there salvation in any other." There is no salvation anywhere else; do not go looking for it. "For there is none other name under heaven given among men" — there is no other name, he says, under heaven — "whereby we must be saved." That is the one and only name. He is the light of the world, he is the life and the Resurrection, he is the way, he is everything — Christ. He is the light, he is the fountain of life and the fountain of light, as the psalmist says, as I told you, and he is the one who gives life to the world; he is the Resurrection and the Life, he is the true

life, he is the light of men, and all these things. "And the darkness comprehended it not" — pay attention to that word. The darkness, he says, does not understand it. Sin, indifference, the hardness of men did not come to know Christ. In the first chapter alone, in just a few verses, three times John says that men did not receive Christ. He says it in his fifth verse, in his tenth verse, and in his eleventh verse. He says, "In him was life; and the life was the light of men" — that is Christ — "and the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."

That is, men who were in the darkness did not understand Christ. And there comes a man sent from God — he is speaking of John, our Forerunner. "Whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light" — of Christ, because he is the light. John was not the light. "That all men through him might believe. He was not that Light" — John is not the light — "but was sent to bear witness of that Light." Christ is the light, he is the true Light, "which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world" — he was in the world, he says — "and the world was made by him" — he is the one who made the world — "and the world knew him not,"

above it was "comprehended it not," here it is "knew him not." "He came unto his own, and his own received him not." And again, "received him not." Three times they deny Christ, in deed and in word.

That is what men are like; that, unfortunately, is what they were — and I would rather not say what they will be. May we not be like that. On this point I would like to tell you that, since our Christ says to us, "You are" — I am giving it to you, receive it and pass it on — and you saw how he gave it again, with power, at Pentecost, with a little red tongue of fire on the head of each one. Their nous, the spiritual intellect, was illumined, they came to know how all things truly stand, they received light, and they went out and preached Christ, even giving up their lives for it. Because, as you know, all the apostles had a dishonourable end — an honourable one, I mean. Even the Lord Jesus himself had the greatest,

as a criminal on the Cross, and after him his disciples as well. About the clergy in general I want you to know that they are small lights. It is written in John 5:35 that John the Forerunner, as a minister of Christ, was a lamp. Have you ever noticed it, have you ever read that little passage? Listen to what it says. "He" — John, my Forerunner — "was the burning and shining lamp." He says it of my Forerunner: that he was like a lamp lit and giving light. His life and his teaching and the quality of his faith were such that he was a shining torch for all who wanted to follow him; and you know that many followed John and afterwards found Christ, because the apostles — apart from one or two, I think — the rest of them were disciples of John. That is why he says to them, as you heard today if you were paying attention during the epistle reading, "John baptized you" — you see — "but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence." So then, they came out of John's circle. They followed that little lamp, that lamp, and they found the Sun of Righteousness. That lamp led them to salvation. And that is exactly how

the successors ought to be as well, the successors of Christ — real lamps, so that the other person can find his way, so that you shed light on his problems, resolve his questions, and speak to him by your life. What counts for more, and is stronger, one might say, is a person's life, because people listen less and see more. They want to see an example, whether you also live what you say. That is why many people say — perhaps even among us here — "If I don't see it, I don't believe it. I would want the things this gentleman says, or this father says, or this bishop says — I would want to see him doing them,"

and to see the other one doing them and this one not doing them. But in any case, he is asking for an example; that is what we want to say. So John says of John, "He, the Forerunner, was the burning and shining lamp." We, many times, are like candles that have gone out, like lamps that have been snuffed. And I don't know whether any of you are from the countryside, from before the paraffin and the electricity and so on came. They used to light oil lamps with a thick wick, two fingers wide. And if it happened to go out, the smoke would catch you in the throat. That is what many of us are like. Our life is such that it stinks, in every sense of the word. May no one see us or come near us. It is not that we will pull people out of the hard road that Satan put them on in order to destroy them; it is exactly the opposite.

"And you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light" — you were willing to enjoy something near him. They went and stood near him, but near him they then found the Sun; they found the source, and everything changed. Paul, too, has an exhortation to the Philippians — I have found it, it is in chapter two, verse fifteen. Do you know what it says there? Among his other thoughts, he concludes like this: "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the children of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye shine as luminaries in the world." I want you, he says, to become people like that in the midst of this crooked and perverse society,

to be as luminaries in the world, like lamps, like lights, like stars, so that others may see and be able to be guided, and find the Pole Star, Christ, and be saved. So the apostles, for example, and devout preachers, clergy and laity, and Christians in general in the world, are, in a manner of speaking, the moral light by which others can be helped to find their real road. Many of us, of course, have the label, as I was telling you, but we lack the goods. We get caught out, because our lives are not in order.

That is exactly why I say to you: I have to be correspondingly what I claim. If we say "Christian," then I have to be the light that goes with it. In my life generally, by my words, and above all by my deeds, we must teach the principles of the Gospel, which the whole world needs to learn. "Their sound went out into all the ends of the world." That is how the prophets saw it, that is how Isaiah saw it. There is no other way for a person to return to Paradise, to the homeland he longs for. The road is the road of metanoia, of repentance. "I too have found the way through repentance." There is no other way; there is only one. Impenitence was the going out, repentance is the return,

sin was the expulsion, and freedom from sin is the return, by way of the road of humility. So then, wherever the light is, it shines and becomes visible, as we say. That is what the life of a real Christian is like: it gives light. Many people go hunting for the faults of others in order to cover up their own. I remember one detail from years back. I was talking with a man who was running down the clergy to me. He did not go to church, he did not go to Holy Confession, he did not receive Holy Communion, nothing. And yet he kept up with religious affairs, and above all with how the bishops conduct themselves.

He put this question to me, with the answer already built into it. He says to me, "I understand what you are telling me, but I want you to point out to me even one bishop who died and did not leave thousands of gold sovereigns behind." Chrysostomos of Kalamata had recently died. "Chrysostomos of Kalamata," I say, "left his cassock behind." "That was one," he says to me. "You asked me for one. If you ask me for a second, I will produce a second one for you." Do you see it? To cover his own life he goes looking for faults in others — and in the instruments of Christ, at that, in his "representatives," as some people call them. The bishops are not representatives of Christ; the bishops are not that. The Papists are the ones who talk that way. The Orthodox clergy are an instrument of grace, an instrument in the Church of Christ; a priest is not a representative. "Representative" implies the absence of the real person. We are here, of course, whereas the other man has gone away — that is how it is, that is Papist talk. Here the priest is an instrument. He does not say, "I forgive you," as the Papist says. He says, "Thou, O Lord, who didst say, whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound, and whatsoever ye shall loose shall be loosed, loose also this thy servant." Not I — I am the sinner; Thou, O Lord. Do I crown you? No, it is not I who crown you: the servant of God is crowned, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Do I baptize you? No, it is not I who baptize you: the servant of God is baptized, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. He is an instrument; he is not a representative. So people demand, as they put it, that the representatives of God should live up to it. Do the representatives of the doctors live up to it? Do the lawyers? Do the ministers live up to it, do the prime ministers? Has every single person who has been put in his position kept his oath? You say nothing to me about them; it is Christ's men you have come after. That is why our Christ says: be careful, he says, and he points out where the mistake lies. You cannot be cured by anything at all. If the salt goes bad, it cannot be put right with other salt. Take it, he says, and throw it outside.

Take care to be salt; do not lose your worth; be light. Otherwise there is no way left for you to spread the Gospel. You have been lost, and you have lost the world along with you. So the world wants an example — an example.

The world does not want to listen. The world does not want to believe. The world wants to see. And unfortunately that example is not there to the extent that it ought to be — although, to be fair, the example does exist. But we go looking for these matters that will cover up our own misdeeds. And that has the same force as what one of our own wise men used to say: "Whoever takes up another man's faults in order to cover his own is like a man washing himself with mud." You take mud, another person's filth, to wash off your own.

Filth is not washed away with filth. There is no excuse at all in the fact that the man doing it is someone who ought to be doing something else. But an example is what people want. They examine us: what part we play, where we stand, what part we play in Christian affairs. What is it that we profess? They come into our house and see icons all around the walls, and they do not find a life inside to match them; they do not find love, they do not find almsgiving, they do not find understanding, or warmth, or consolation. And the man says to you, "What is it you profess in here?" It takes light, it takes sacrifice, it takes what Christ did as the Good Samaritan in the parable. "What is mine is mine and what is yours is yours. I bother no one, and I don't want anyone bothering me,

I ask nothing from anyone, but I give to no one either." And then he expects that to get him a place in Paradise! That is no argument at all. "I don't bother anyone." But you are a robber! How could you not be bothering anyone? Where did you find the right to bother anyone, to harm anyone, to wrong anyone? You are a robber! And if I told you that you were a robber, you would take it badly. So then, how can you want to be the one who is bothered? If you want to be light, and for people to see your works and glorify the Father in heaven, you will have to live the life of the Good Samaritan. We had a man like that in our circle, who has now fallen asleep. Among his other good works he had done one strange good work: he spent himself in the following way — and these are lights that cannot be put out by any means at all.

You could bombard them with hydrogen bombs and they would not go out. He was a pensioner living on ten thousand drachmas. And there was a family with six children, a widow, who was living in shacks, because none of the people who had houses would take her in, seeing that she had so many children. Things reached the limit, and he went and found an engineer who was putting up blocks of flats, and he asked him to give him a flat — a three-room one, at the prices of that time — and to take twenty thousand drachmas up front and then four thousand a month until it was paid off. The man gave him the three-room flat, and he took that family and went and settled them inside it, and he paid — I don't know how many years — four thousand drachmas a month, and he paid off that house. It is here in Athens.

That is the light that comes through action, and you cannot put it out — you cannot. And the other person is asking for it; that is the very thing the other person wants. But how many of us are like that? I am not, and I am not going to pretend I am — I am not. Let me tell you another one, on a different level altogether. Light in forgiveness. This man is a friend of mine; he is still alive. He isn't here — he was promoted and moved away, so he doesn't come here now. He had his father and his mother, and himself. His father died, and then his mother died, and there was an uncle, a real Shylock, and he managed to devour it all, and not a penny to the orphaned children, nothing, not so much as a token. And my friend would listen at this end with complete calm and answer that brute respectfully — his uncle, from the other end of the line. In any case, from the way the uncle laid it out for him — I was working this out from the context — the ice factory went too.

At the end he said to him: don't hang up, uncle, let me say something to you. And I don't know what the other man said back — go on, and so forth. And he said this, which I heard as the closing word: you can manage anything you set your mind to. You can even squeeze us dry — even that is possible. Only one thing you will not manage. I had no idea yet what was coming.

To make me hate you. That you will not manage. And he hangs up the phone. Tell me — when you hear a man whose very saliva has been taken from him by that thieving uncle of his, and he says to him, you can manage anything, only you cannot make me hate you, because I am a Christian and I have no right to hate you. That, I confess, washed me clean. That thought always comes back to me, sometimes when things get tangled with someone, with myself, with other people, and so on. And I say: look what power Christ has, if you really do keep the light burning.

Let me tell you another one, from another side, so that you can see what light is. There is a woman who beats her husband — his head, right here. They have children; he goes out to work. Another man knows that this fellow who takes beatings from his wife goes to confession to a certain spiritual father, and he goes and finds that spiritual father and says to him: Father, does so-and-so — they both live here — Father, does so-and-so make his confession to you? He says yes. Have you ever asked that man how things are for him at home? How am I supposed to remember, he says.

When he comes, remember to ask him, because that man is always in need of consolation, but above all these days, when his wife has split his head open and it's bandaged up. You understand. And the priest kept it in mind as a reminder, as they used to say. And there you are, a few days later the man comes to make his confession. And sure enough, the priest sees the head bandaged, in a dreadful state. The father remembered, and in the middle of the confession he put the question like this: I don't remember, he says, whether I have ever asked you if you are married. Are you married? Yes, yes, I am, he says. Do you have a family, a wife, and so on? He says, I have three children.

And how do things go at home with your wife — do you live in harmony? Father, forgive me. I did not come to confess about my children or about my wife. I came to tell my sins. And he went on with what he had to say, and he left. Not one word. Nothing about his wife, nothing about his children, not even to his confessor. That is the light of Christ. These are the real Christians, the ones who give light to people who want to see.

They bring them to see, because — because after the noetic suns, the suns of the spiritual world that the intellect perceives, the clearest light there is is the sun we see with our eyes, the perceptible sun. But for ruined eyes, the sun is nothing at all.

For ruined eyes — because there are a great many ruined eyes of souls that do not want to see things as they really are. That's how it is. Now, since I have touched on this, allow me to speak to you from the opposite side as well: from the darkness, from the results of darkness, what they can do and where they can lead — because the things I've been describing are the works of the light and its radiance. So listen now to the results of darkness too. There is a maternity hospital here in Athens. Inside there is a Jewish woman who had gone in to give birth. She had her baby. In the next bed there is a Christian woman

who had gone in to kill hers, to have her abortion. And further along there are others. When the Christian woman found out that this woman was Jewish, she thought this was an opportunity to speak to her about the true faith of Christ. And indeed she found some way, at some point during the days they were together, to speak about Christ and about Christianity. The Jewish woman listened to her with great courtesy and understanding. But at the end she said this to her: Have you finished? She says yes. I could not, she says, even if I wanted to, follow your religion, because if your religion were true, you would not have committed this crime.

This crime shows that your religion is not true — that you yourself do not believe it. So how are you going to pass it on to me?

So the other person is not looking at what you say. They are looking at what you do. Let me tell you another. This one is alive too. They are all alive. Listen. Two orphaned souls go, with the little savings they had, to buy a plot of land. They draw up the preliminary agreement, they pay a certain sum up front, and a date was set for the proper contracts. This is in Markezinis' day, when the gold sovereign shot up and the dollar doubled. They come to sign the papers, but because of the change, because the dollar had risen, they didn't have enough. They were short by twenty or thirty thousand drachmas.

The whole matter was two hundred thousand drachmas, two hundred and fifty. And there in the office is a Christian — a Christian of the very best sort. And he offers to put up out of his own pocket the difference that had come from the rise of the dollar, so that the orphaned girls wouldn't lose their money and lose the chance at the plot. But then he asked for a little security. And what did he ask for? To be included as a co-purchaser. This murderer, this notary. And it was done.

They didn't want to sign. But never mind, we're all Christians here, and this and that — and the women put their signatures at the bottom. A little time goes by, prices rise; a little more time, and they gather the money to go and pay him back. And now the stalling begins: never mind, hold on to it, there's no need, keep it — he strings them along and around until the deadline passes, so that the property gets awarded to him. And now for fifteen years he has had them worn down to nothing in the courts. I can't give you names. Your hair would stand on end if you heard the names. Is this the light of Christ, that shines upon all?

People will find out about these things, and they will find out who is involved, too. And they will say: my God, what is going on here, do you exist, what is this? So how can Christianity go forward with a life like that? Let me tell you one more, from the tradition — let this one be a blessed one. You can read it, if you like, in the life of Saint Menas, on the eleventh of November. There you will find that a Jewish man had a Christian friend, a very good Christian, and whenever he went away to trade somewhere, whatever money he had over he always left with him, trusting that a Christian does not steal.

He didn't trust his own wife enough to leave it with her, or his children; he left it with the Christian. This had happened many times. On one of those many occasions he had left him five hundred gold coins. He went off on his journey, came back, and went to collect his money as always. And the Christian says to him: you left me nothing. I left you nothing? What are you saying — you left me nothing. They argued, and so on. Now, the Jewish man knew that Christians are afraid of oaths, and he says to him: will you allow us to go as far as Saint Menas, so that you can swear there that you never received it — and then it is yours, good luck to you. Fine. I'll get the animals.

They set off for Saint Menas — a day's journey on foot, I don't know where. And they arrive there, and our fine Christian gentleman lays his hand on the Gospel and swears that he never took it. The Jewish man had not expected that; right up until they got there he had believed it was impossible for a Christian to lay his hand down and swear a lie. And yet our Christian — and there are many of us here tonight just like him — laid his hand on it and swore, without turning a hair. The Jewish man was heartbroken; the case was lost. That had been his last card, Christ — whom he himself of course did not believe in, but he wanted to make use of him at that moment, since the other man did believe in him. They went outside, and they were going to travel back together. They get up on their horses. But the Christian's horse turned wild. It bolted.

He is thrown down and dashed to the ground. It didn't crush him, but he lost his handkerchief, his ring, and a gold signet seal he had. They were gone; he searched and so on — gone. Anyway, they got back up and rode on in silence, and they reached the halfway point of the road and sat down to eat together — quite some nerve on the Christian's part, eh — they sat down to eat together. And while they were eating, beside some water, before going on with their animals, he sees a horse coming at a gallop from the other direction, and on it the servant of his own household, the Christian's servant, holding the Jewish man's purse in his hand. Hey — how did you get here, what is this? But didn't you send us word?

Didn't you send a rider over there? Didn't you send him with your ring and your gold seal and this handkerchief of yours? And didn't you give express orders to bring the Jewish man's purse? Saint Menas himself had gone to the house and said: send these things down, because this master of yours is not coming back up. Now you understand what had happened. And do you know how many of us are just like that? If the things we do were brought to light, the heavens would groan. I am only gleaning these examples to show you that we are cheap goods, God have mercy on us. And let us take care: if our works are dark, let us work them over until they become works of light. I thank God, because he has given us metanoia — repentance — and Holy Confession, which levels everything flat

and then raises it all up again from the beginning and makes it beautiful for the Kingdom of Heaven, which I wish for one another and for all.

εκκλημάσιο, αυτό δείχνει ότι η θρησκεία σου δεν είναι σωστή, δεν την πιστεύεις εσύ η ίδια. Πώς θα μου τη μεταφέρεις εμένα;

Γκρεμοτσακίζεται κάτω, δεν τον συνέτριψε, όμως έχασε το μαντίλι του, το δακτυλίδι του και μια χρυσή σφραγίδα που είχε, χάθηκαν, έψαξε και λοιπά, πάει. Ανεβήκανε εν πάση περιπτώσει και αμίλητοι προχώρησαν και έφτασαν στα μισά του δρόμου και καθίσανε να φάνε μαζί, κουράγιο ο Χριστιανός ε, καθίσανε να φάνε μαζί. Εκεί που τρώγανε σ' ένα νερό για να προχωρήσουν έπειτα με τα ζώα τους, βλέπει από εκεί και ήρχετο καλπάζοντας ένα άλογο, πάνω ο υπηρέτης του σπιτιού του, του χριστιανού, ο υπηρέτης, κρατώντας στο χέρι το πουγγί του Εβραίου. Πάκα, πώς ήρθες, τι; Μα, δεν μας παραγγείλατε;
