Summary
The homily continues the series on the Evangelical Law in Matthew 5, moving from the Beatitudes and their promised reward to Christ's next saying. The Gospel is written once by the Holy Spirit through the Apostles and interpreted once by the Holy Spirit through the God-bearing Fathers, so anyone who adds his own philosophy becomes a heretic at that moment. The speaker presses concrete duties: rebuking dishonest business, redirecting idle table talk about football and politics, keeping the fast even at social cost as in his Lenten name-day account, answering heretics from Scripture, and warning couples who refuse children, closing with Christ's millstone warning.

...will be a continuation of the Evangelical Law. Those of us who have been together at these homilies, remember that we are speaking from the fifth chapter of Matthew, which is one of the three chapters of our Lord's Sermon on the Mount. And we spoke about the Beatitudes that Christ our Lord gave when He sat down there on the mountain, and we have reached a point — those of us who were together the other day — where He said that all of you who have managed to put these Beatitudes into practice,
you are humble, you mourn for your sins, you are meek, you are merciful, you are peacemakers, and so on. You who have attained these things: 'Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.' That, in a way, was the first part. But then there follows a teaching just as serious, and He comes at once, turning to the Apostles and, by extension, to all those who would come to believe through the Apostles — and this matter certainly reaches down to us even today — and He says: 'You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savour, with what shall it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.' You, He says, are the ones who will salt the earth. Not Jerusalem, not Palestine — the whole earth. It begins from Jerusalem, from Galilee and so on, and goes to the ends of the earth. That was the commandment. 'Wait,' He says, 'for not many days from now you shall receive the promise of My Father, and you shall take it and carry it, beginning from Jerusalem and going to the ends of the earth.'
So then, you are the salt of the earth. The earth here is human beings, and the salt is the Apostles. He presents them as the salt that will now take up the task of salting the earth. Why did He not use anything else? Why did He not say, 'You are the sugar,' for instance, 'that will sweeten the world'? Something else — He took salt, which has many properties and can convey exactly what He wanted to say. Salt, as you know, is something that preserves; you put salt on a thing so that it will not go bad. It is something that seasons, that gives savour. Take away a little salt and the food is tasteless.
properties that are indispensable in the world. But if you, He says, lose your savour, if you stop being salt, the whole thing is lost. Not even you yourselves can be put right, because salt that loses its salting power cannot be restored by any other salt. They throw it out. So if a person considers with how much wisdom He spoke these words, and if he is willing to set himself over against this teaching and ask: am I salt in society today? Have I been salted, and do I salt others? What am I doing?
he will find many things in himself to put right, things he ought to have watched. A holy man gives a definition concerning salt. Listen — it is Theodoret of Cyrus, an ancient father of the Church, who says this. He says that salt, in the spiritual sense and in divine teaching, means the teaching that binds together what has decayed and keeps it whole and sound. It is the teaching that grips, that salts, so that what is salted is held firm and does not go to ruin.
Holy Scripture, the teaching of Jesus, which is likened to salt. More generally, if one wants to speak about the properties of salt, he should have this thought in mind. Listen: just as salt, entering into food — into fish, for example, into meat, into cheese — into the bodies that are salted, the things we put salt on, holds them together and protects them from the decay and the stench to which they are subject, so too the teaching of Jesus, given through the words of His mouth and entering
into the nature of human beings corrupted and rotted by sin, halts their corruption and their decay and makes them receptive of blessedness — that is, it transfers them out of corruption and foul decay into incorruption (aphtharsia) and the fragrance of divine blessedness. As salt prevents decay, as salt makes firm, as salt gives savour, as salt preserves. And I say this: He gave it to the Apostles to hand on to their own people, and they to their own, and so on down to this day, so that we might have the teaching of Jesus through the ages, through the people who
carried the baton of the word from one to another, which we still have, as you know, to this day. Whoever wants to speak about the Gospel, and to speak rightly and in an Orthodox way, and not become a heretic and be mocked by the devil, has only to humble himself; he has no business bringing in clever ideas of his own. The Gospel was written once and interpreted once. It was written by the Holy Spirit through the Apostles, and it is interpreted by the Holy Spirit through the God-bearing Fathers. We have nothing else to do — only to take up these interpretations, bring them to the surface, listen to them, and be salted ourselves so that we do not go rotten. It is all lent to us; the work is already done.
no philosophy is needed, and whoever comes along to put in his own philosophy becomes a heretic at that very moment. And if today people seem unsalted, and we have this stench inside society, and even inside Christian families, it is because the genuineness of the salt is not there. We do not have the real word, the word the Apostles preached, the word the Fathers preached, so that we might know rightly what is right. That is why things have gone foul. In any case, He says: you are the salt of the earth. It is possible for the salt to lose its savour, to be spoiled. And when the salt is spoiled, nothing can be done then. And a person must be careful...
who plays this role of salt, the one who is sent. And just as the Apostles were sent then, so today too there are Apostles in continuation, and Christians as well — for every Christian is a little apostle, a little Christ — and he too is obliged to keep that salt in himself and to use it for others as well, to forestall their decay, their spiritual decay. But this salt of the earth, He says, may lose its savour, may become saltless, may stop salting, may throw off the salting power it had at the beginning. Once that passion has taken hold, it is impossible to heal; it is impossible by nature for salt that has become saltless to be salted again.
and if people do not excuse them, neither do they condemn them. But the Christian, if he suffers this, is stripped of every defence. They put him on the bench at once and hand him the harshest punishment. Everyone may sin, He says, except the Christian.
He is forbidden to sin. Everyone else is excused and is not condemned by the world — everyone except Christians. Christians, whether they are speakers, whether they are preachers, whatever other role they play out in the world, inside an anti-Christian society, will be accused at once and put on trial and given the harshest of penalties by people. Why does this happen? Because they expect an example from Christians, they expect a word, they expect works — things they do not see. Well, I do not know now which category each of us falls into: whether he himself is in a position to salt someone else, or whether he himself stinks and needs someone else to salt him.
this is something each of us will have to examine alone. It is a hard subject, and we need to go deep into it. There is no need to rush through the Gospel the way you read the news in the newspaper. Read one page, read one chapter. You cannot manage that much? Read one line. You cannot manage even that? Read one word — but apply it. Do not read it as theory. Do not move on; stand there, however deep it is, however impossible it seems to you, however much of a mountain it is. Go out to an irrigation ditch, to a village, and sit and watch the water as it travels. You will see
the water: it finds a hollow in front of it, it cannot get past, it stays there until it has filled the hollow, and when it has filled the hollow it moves on. The water comes down and finds a stone in front of it. It does not turn back. It stands there and it fills and fills and fills and fills, and it rises and overflows the stone and moves on. It stands its ground, whether a mountain confronts it or a pit confronts it. It does not go around. So do not run off either. Look at yourself: what you read — did you apply it? If you applied it, go on further. If you did not apply it, do not go on further. This discipline is what is missing from us. And that is exactly why
we are anti-Christian. We have the label, we do not have the goods. If what David feared were applied — he said, 'If Thou shouldst mark iniquities, O Lord, O Lord, who shall stand?' If You hurry to settle accounts with me — who could stand before Him? And yet we behave as though our own righteousness were the righteousness of God. Without even knowing what the righteousness of God is, we justify ourselves and think we are all right, and indeed we often hold ourselves up as an example to other people. But it is not like that. Today, if society is in the state it is in, it is because the Christian salt has lost its savour.
there is no word, there is no work, as I said earlier, and above all there is no example. They are not there; they are missing. You will say to me: are they missing altogether? No, to be honest. But they are rare, they are scarce; and among these so-called reborn people you do not find that savour, that power that would keep you close to them. Many times that is how it is. And when it ever happens that the sore is exposed in someone who claims to be a Christian,
who preaches, or who professes to be an instrument of God, who is a clergyman and so on — then the person who looks more and listens less is left standing right there; he has been executed in cold blood. Of course, ignorance is what beats us. We should not be standing in front of somebody else's corpse; that other man's falls are meant neither to benefit us nor to harm us, if we ourselves are sound. But because we have not become sound and do not want to become sound, out of our egotism we look for ways to judge the other person so as to justify ourselves. That, however, is not right. With these words, my beloved, Christ leaves us without any defence. Stand up, He says. Stand up. I am giving you all this power to go out and salt this rotten society. The early Church
had some good Christians, and above all it had faithful women, and people would say, 'Good heavens, what is this? What power, what grace, what is this that you have?' The life, above all, of the women of the early Church was a great Gospel, a great example. And people — as you yourselves know — who want to see more and hear less, take the example, and they are kept, and they stay close to us. So examine yourselves: since we say we are Christians and profess Christianity, let us examine what relationship we have with the properties of salt. Do we in fact, wherever we stand, give savour to our surroundings straight away?
Wherever we stand, is the decay interrupted and stopped by the word we speak, by the example we set? It stops; you forestall it. I have often heard, and others have written to me, that a single word they heard in a homily became the cause of their finding the way of God — of turning back, of repenting, of changing their life, of shaking the stench off themselves and coming alive, of ceasing to corrupt others and even beginning to heal others. With one word. I do it, yes, but someone else has to do it too. And if he cannot do it from a pulpit, he will do it another way. He will do it with a word: going to visit the other person, making an appointment with him, saying two things to him — not to rebuke him, but to remind him, to counsel him.
he becomes the cause, out of the measure he has within him, giving from it — how shall I put it — giving a tithe of it, in any case; and by giving the other person the treasure of his knowledge, he preserves the other person too. A man has no right to hide the salt away inside himself. He is obliged to carry these gifts of God to the other person as well. And this knowledge is absolutely necessary — this salt is knowledge: why Christ came into the world, how man fell, that there is life beyond the grave, how salvation is given. These are the salts that Christ uses to preserve human beings in their weakness. For otherwise, whatever outward vigour a man may have, whatever life he may have, inwardly
he isn't right on the inside. He's like those lovely apples that are red on the outside, but you open them up and inside they're all black, and you throw them away. That's how many of us are. It's exactly as Christ said, and as our Lord said: whitewashed tombs, and if you open them up, inside there's filth and stench. So the Christian is the one who gives savor. In fact, many people, when a Christian is present, feel it and shut their mouths. Notice: they put their foot down, they change the subject, they say, "You stay with us a little longer." They don't dare open their mouth to say anything. In fact they have to take precautions. Listen to this: "The aunt is coming today, so..."
"...no loose talk, nothing off-color, no dirty jokes and so on, because the aunt is coming." And the aunt is the one who makes the sign of the Cross, the Christian aunt, and they take her seriously. And once the aunt leaves, behind her back they'll go right on doing their own thing. But why? Because of the aunt. Not for Christ's sake, but because of the aunt. Well, what is it about this aunt? She has a radiance about her that pins people down, because this person has grace. The Christian has grace. People say, "Look at the difference between this one and that one." These are gifts that God gives to the person who struggles, who himself wants to become something and to pass it on to others as well. Remember that beautiful charge Paul gave to Timothy: the things you have heard from me, hand on to others,
men who will be capable of teaching others as well. That is how it is passed on. It goes along with humanity and never wears thin, never spoils. The Word of God has a power that doesn't decay, doesn't change. Read the Gospel every single day and it will still seem new to you. I knew a man, who has since fallen asleep, and he said to me, "Dimitri, I've read it three hundred times." Every time he read it he'd mark a line. "I've read it three hundred times." Meaning I should have sunk through the floor, because I haven't read it right through even once, not systematically, not the whole of it, not one single time. And that man had read it three hundred times, and he told me, every time I find something new in it. It doesn't grow old, it doesn't rot, it doesn't go out of fashion, it doesn't go out of date, because it wasn't written by a man, it isn't human wisdom. It was composed by God himself, and that's why it needs no supplements.
The God of that time is the God of this time as well. "Today He is hung upon the Tree," it says. But He was hung then! And today He is hung too, because it is eternal. Man belongs to the present moment. God is yesterday and today and unto all eternity. "Today He is hung upon the Tree." If we pay attention to these things, we see what they mean to remind us of and what is at stake. So I'd like to set myself alongside the things I'm talking about at this hour, and to remind you as well. Are we really salt? Let's take our words, for example. Are our words savory? Do our words build up? Do our words comfort? Do our words give light? You see the other woman pregnant, the third child, the fourth. What does she do?
How do you use your words, you the Christian who holds the candle in your hand at the Resurrection service? How do you use them? Here's what you say: "Go get rid of it. She's a fool, having all those children. We were the fools. You go and live your life." Careful, please, don't let anyone deceive you. This is your calling; you are not committing a crime. The child has done nothing to you. You didn't find it standing in your way. It never did you any harm. It will cry out against you in eternity. How do you know what door you're closing? How do you know whether you're shutting out an inventor, a great man, a scientist, a Saint? Who are you? You're a fool. She shouldn't be saying such things, but she says, "I'm done with mine" — and she calls herself a Christian. And she drags the other woman along with her, and off she goes and throws the child away. So how are you using your words?
he cheats the other man in his business, and he steals.
What are you going to say to him now? He'll tell you, "You know how the tax office is, you know we can't make ends meet," and so on, "and I'm forced to tell lies, to cheat on the scales, on the measure, on the accounts, to do this sort of thing." What will you say? Because say something you must. You are obliged to be salt in this filth and to set it right. As much as you can. Not a hundred percent — let it be ten, let it be twenty, let it be thirty. You'll say something. You're obliged to put some brake on the ruin. Say something, give him something to think about. You must speak your word; you must open your mouth. A situation that has gone rotten, you must help it, so that it either stops, or is healed, or at least doesn't go off the rails and be lost completely. A person has a treasury inside him that never runs dry, so long as he believes rightly in Christ, so long as he fears Christ and believes that one day he will
come face to face with Christ, whether he wants to or not. And that day may come in a second; in a fraction of a second he may find himself standing before Him. So the Christian, I say, must be ready to help and to hold a situation together within society. He plays a great role. He is the preserving element. He is the one who will give things meaning. He'll find himself in a circle of people, in company, at a table, at a celebration. The Christian is obliged to see to it that he changes the conversation, that talk about wind and water, about the football pools and footballers and politics and I don't know what else. He must see to it that he turns the conversation the way Christ used to turn it.
Wherever He was, He spoke the word. He would immediately turn the conversation into a saving conversation. No gossip, nothing off-color, no filthy jokes, none of that. Because the time is not ours. The time is His, given to us on loan. And He will ask us to give an account of how we used it. So a person is obliged to have some capital always on hand, and to prepare himself. Wherever he goes, that's where he'll meet it. Look, when you go to a wedding during Lent, what are you going to find in front of you? Aren't you going to find goat and lamb? If these people have it in them to hold the wedding in the middle of the fast, do you really expect them to have Lenten food waiting there for you? "But we ended up there." How did you end up there? "I had no choice." You go out into the forest, and there's a she-wolf out there somewhere. Well, you take your precautions, don't you?
That's what you have to do; you have to arm yourself. "But he's my relative, I have to go." Then arm yourself. Take your cartridge belt with you, take the salt with you, and go and stand there gracefully and humbly, and shed some light on the situation, and say a couple of words. Don't join in. And if you have to get up and leave, then leave, with all my blessing. You'll have held something back; you become a lesson; you make certain people who had never once thought about such things take a different road. You may get the cold shoulder. The world hasn't ended. But the other person will understand that something is going on here. There are such people. I remember one case. It's my own and I shouldn't tell it, it may be taken as boasting, but I'll tell it to you anyway. At a Theodore's name day, which falls in Lent — it was a Saturday. Lamb for the table, for Theodore. The living room packed with people,
waiting to devour that lamb. When my wife and I saw that there was lamb: "Forgive us, please, we're leaving." "How can you leave? We have a table set." "That's exactly why we're leaving, because of this table. Other people are coming to the table; we're going." "It's Lent, my dear man. How am I going to eat lamb? Lamb in Lent? There are so many good things: make some squid, make cuttlefish, make shrimp, make whatever you like. But this I can't see as right." "Oh, so now you're going to lecture us." "Not at all. Be well, we're off." "But we want you to stay." "Then open a tin of squid, make a tomato salad, fry a couple of potatoes, and we're fine." "But how can we eat what we're going to eat..." "You'll eat yours and we'll eat ours." And so that we wouldn't leave, they made those things.
They ate, and that lamb ate them — it really did eat them. Because I remember what happened. It became a topic; the others heard. There was a pharmacist there, a young lady, in the company. Things came out in such a way that I was forced to explain what this season is, what the fast is, and so on. The young lady listens to all this, and the others were pinned to their seats. She says to me, "I could never have imagined that a proper gentleman like you, judging by the tie and the suit, could think this way and know these things about this matter." She had never in her life heard what it's all about. You are obliged. You can point it out to him, you can enlighten him, you can tell him: what I'm doing, I'm doing for this reason and that reason, and I mean it, because if I'm called a Christian, then I have to
prove by my actions that I am a Christian. Because otherwise tomorrow you'll go up before Christ and say to Him, "You know, Panagopoulos, the one who preaches, went and ate lamb on a Saturday, and you're saying this to me?" Do you understand? You're obliged to get there before the other man does. He doesn't know. He didn't learn it from his mother, he didn't learn it from his teacher; he went and found the priest, and the priest should have taught him. What are you going to say to him now? He doesn't know. You're obliged. Of course you'll get hurt over it, but the world hasn't ended. Better to fall out with people, better to fall out with your relatives, better to break off with everyone, than to fall out with Christ. Don't spoil that. Take care not to spoil that. It's to your advantage to have Him as your friend — and not because He needs you, but because you need Him.
And yet, here we are, unsalted, sickly sweet as they say. We ended up there and they served us a sweet. A non-fasting one. So, what happened? Suppose they served you poison, what would you do? They served you a woman, what would you do? They served you a man, what would you do? That's what this is. This is Christianity: you're obliged to take a stand, to salt the situation. You be sound yourself, don't be filthy yourself, and then give savor to your surroundings, salt the atmosphere. With knowledge that is right, sound, lasting, eternal. You don't trouble yourself to ask about anything, just wind and water. "Did you hear about Panathinaikos, did you hear about so-and-so." What are these things? Is this a Christian's life? Unsalted people. Unsalted people. They don't even have a scent about them. Not a trace anywhere of the savor of Christianity. So how then is the rest of the lump supposed to rise? Look, as long as they're watching us,
they're watching us. How is it going to happen? So we pay no attention to what we mean, or to admonishing anyone, or to comforting, or to giving light. But the Christian who is well-instructed — and he's obliged to be well-instructed — look at what the heretics do: in their Scriptures they've written in the margins the passages they mean to appeal to in order to back up their heresy. Turn to this one, turn to that one, and off they lead you. The Christian knows them too. He says, "You know what, I'll play a card as well." I know how to play, because you know them inside out. So you learn them inside out too, and do the very same thing he does. From his side he says Christ is not God; then I bring out the verse that says Christ is God. Even if you don't persuade him, at least don't let him lift up his eyes. You are obliged to set the truth before him, what is sound, not what is rotten. And when the Christian doesn't do it, is God to blame? Is God to blame? No, we are to blame. So we have an obligation to
shed light on every situation. Today people are left in the dark, and above all young couples, on the matter of having children. And they call themselves Christians, they profess Christianity, they belong to circles and to associations, and they don't have children. So how can you tell such a man now to go and speak to someone else's conscience, to fear God and to carry out his calling, when I, who am supposed to be the salt, have lost my savor? How is it possible? Do you feel it? We've gone rotten, my dear people. You know it, and you've heard what He says: better, He says, that you tie a millstone, a donkey's millstone, around your neck, better that from today you be drowned in the depths of the sea,
than that you scandalize one of these little ones, one who is weak. Because the strong one, who believes rightly and so on, has been instructed, he's been braced up, he's been salted by the Word of God and by the Gospel. You can't budge that man. You'll break your face against him. Argue with him and you'll get your answer, and you'll tuck your tail between your legs and go. But that other one, the weak one, who doesn't know — him you knock down, and the millstone goes round your neck. How can such a thing happen? So this is something that slips by unnoticed. That's why I'm raising it, and I'd like you to pay attention to it too. And there's another thing a person must watch out for. Other people want to see the works of love. They want from a person
to see love. And when a person doesn't see love from you — and not with words only, though it's a beautiful thing to show someone your love with words, but above all with deeds, above all with deeds — then you stop having any mission that benefits those outside. Because when I look for the results of your faith in practice and I don't see them, then you're not holding me up, you're dragging me down. And I say, there you are, he does it the same way too. There you are, he could have done that and he didn't. Why should I do it? So what's also missing from people, from Christians, are the works of love, which people are above all looking to see in
those who profess Christianity. Further on He says other things. He presents a person as a lamp, as a light set on a mountain. And He says that this is how your life ought to be, so that others can look at you and find their bearings. A person has to be the North Star for other people. He will have Christ as his North Star, and others will have him as theirs. Because many people look to human beings. They believe in people more than in Christ, you know this. Because they don't see Christ. The eyes of their soul haven't opened yet. And so they look at the man, at the one God has sent. They look at the priest, they look at the preacher,
they look at the Christian who goes to church, they look at the one who puts incense on the coals and so on. However much they may hate them, they still look to them. So if your response isn't equal to each need a person has — you see someone dying, and you could help him with something, and you don't help him — then you have handed him over to destruction. If you could loosen a little the noose around someone's neck, whether he put it there himself or somebody else, some clever fellow, put it there for him, and you could take it off a little, you're able to take it off and you don't take it off, then again you are guilty before God. And people see these things; they notice these things. So we will never manage, my dear people, to become the reason a person turns back to Christ.
I don't mean by this that you all have to go up into the pulpit and preach. If God gives you that talent, then go out and do it. If He doesn't give it to you, then stay quietly in your shell. But on this point every one of us can help. And above all we can salt this rotten society of ours. A mother today cannot help her daughter and cannot guard her daughter unless she herself has been formed morally. A mother who spends two or three hours in front of the mirror can't scold her girl and tell her, don't do that. A father can't tell his son not to smoke while he's sending him out to buy cigarettes for himself. Nor tell him not to gamble, not to drink, not to do this or that. What the world wants today is an example.
You yourself don't do it — so is it that the thing isn't right, or that it can't be done? Even if only one person does it, that's proof that it can be done. It's just that the rest of us didn't want to do it. So, standing before this responsibility and before this commandment, let each of us take a hard look at himself. And let him be careful, because one day an account will be asked of him. I can tell you that right now I'm hearing certain objections. One objection I'm hearing at this moment goes roughly like this: What's the use of saying anything? People don't listen nowadays, Mr. Panagopoulos. You waste your words, you make yourself the villain — that's all you stand to gain, and nothing else. Well then, what are we to do now? Shall we shut our mouths? Shall we fall into line with whatever everyone else is doing? What shall we do — hand the whole thing over to the devil to let it rot, so that nothing is left, so that everywhere
you walk you have to hold your nose? What's to become of us? It isn't like that. We have an obligation to speak our word, and at the same time, if it's needed, to speak of our work as well — which normally isn't permitted, but if it's needed in order to help someone, you'll say it. And God sees that you're not doing it to show off; you're doing it in order to help somebody else. Once I was practising a certain virtue, and I was speaking about it, and afterwards a lady stayed behind and said to me, What you said, Mr. Panagopoulos — can you show me even one person who actually does it? Because you're talking about things that can't be done. Now what are you supposed to say to her?
What was I to say to her at that point? I said, I know a person who does it. She says, I don't know anyone. If you came to know him, would you be edified by it or would you be harmed? She didn't answer me. I said, in the end I'm not going to point the man out to you — will you actually do it yourself, or are you asking simply out of curiosity?
If you're only asking out of curiosity, you'll be doubly sorry for it. You'll be punished twice over. She says, It's impossible. I say to her, Is it impossible? So we came to words. Then she says, Let me meet this person. And I said to her: you're speaking with him. Truly? Yes, I said, truly. By the power of God. I can't just talk for the sake of talking.
I'm telling you to do the thing and never to say a word about yourself. A person is not permitted to talk about himself. You saw how Paul was caught up to the third heaven — and what did he say? He said, I know a man, fourteen years ago, and this happened to him and that; and he was caught up there and he heard things, he went into Paradise, he heard things, and so on — and it was he himself. And John, who goes outside and so on — what does he say there? He says, there was also the other one, the beloved disciple, who leaned on His breast at the supper — and it is he himself. Luke goes out on the road with Cleopas, and afterwards he writes: one of them was called Cleopas — and the other, do you know what they called him? One of them they called Cleopas; the other had no name. Because how is he going to name the other one, who is himself? He doesn't say it — that he was counted worthy to go there and the rest. Still, there were cases where he was forced to speak, in order to strengthen the other person. So, I repeat, the other person wants an example. And Paul said it plainly.
Faith comes by hearing — by hearing, he says to the Romans. Go, He says, and preach to all the nations; tell them this and this and this. They will hear, they will consent to be baptised, to change their lives, to receive Christ — they will hear. But if no one is sent, he says, how will they hear? Someone has to be sent. Christ sends out the Apostles, they speak, people hear, they act, and they are saved. So when a person nowadays has reached the point of not wanting to listen, what are we going to use? Christ gave us five senses; He gave us five pairs — two eyes, two nostrils, two hands, two of this, two of that, two, two, two.
So let us use another pair, the pair called the eyes. Not the ears — the eyes. If I don't see it, I don't believe it: that's what people say, and a person waits to see. And then, seeing that you actually do the things you say, he sets the course of his own life by it. I've told you before: all the way to Xylokastro from Athens a policeman came along keeping an eye on me, to see whether or not I would eat souvlaki and the rest of it on the road during Great Lent. And this in spite of the fact that I was ill — I had six illnesses, and I had a blessing to eat. But God provided, and I had taken two bananas with me; and when we stopped at Xylokastro I took them out and ate my two bananas, while the others ate the souvlaki, because they were sick and they were travellers. It was an hour to Patras, people on a journey, by car. And he came up to me and said, You're a strong one.
I understood right away. He says to me, I've been watching you ever since Athens. You would have finished me off, he says — because he had seen me go into the refreshment stand; but I had gone straight through it to the toilet, and out the other side, and I took a walk to stretch my legs. And he says, I had you now, I'd caught you — and he said other things besides. How was he to know that I had a blessing to eat because I was ill? In that case, just to be on the safe side, I had my two bananas; I opened them and ate them. Otherwise he would have finished me off. It isn't a trivial thing. It's a serious matter. What's missing is the example. The example is the positive salt that the other person is waiting for. When you profess Christianity, you have to have a life to match it — a corresponding way of behaving in your words, in your dress, in the way you walk,
in your inclinations, in everything about you, in your hard moments — how you'll conduct yourself; when death comes into your house, how you'll conduct yourself. My brother turned on me when my mother died. My brother the general turned on me, right there in front of everybody, over my mother's body. Do you understand? Because he could not make sense of the fact that I wasn't weeping, that I wasn't tearing my hair.
I believed that my mother had found rest, and that tomorrow I would find her again, if I too go the way she went. But he didn't know that, he didn't believe it, and so an earthquake goes on inside a man. He's waiting for an example. Faith, he says — what faith? How many of us have a house where I walk in and see the icons turned around to face the wall? Why did you turn them around? How much do you believe in Christ? Where is your example, the example that would salt the rest, all those around you who don't know?
Where is the Christianity? The other person is waiting to see: how will you get through the serious illness, how the hardship, how the persecution, how the slander? He is waiting for an example. That is salt. That salts society. The other person is strengthened by it. He sees the matter lived out in practice. He doesn't see a Christianity that's only an abstract idea. It mustn't be left hanging up in the air; it has to be brought down into life. And this, broadly speaking, is what is missing in us who are called Christians. People with the Gospel in their hand are often caught out committing sins that are not merely pardonable ones. Unforgivable sins, with the Gospel in their hand. So how can the beauty of it be preserved, how can the savour be preserved — how is it possible for this society of ours to be seasoned at all?
The devout Christians — clergy, laity, preachers and the rest — are the ones who offer up the fragrance to God, even if they are few. You see, with ten kilos of fish, fifty grams of salt sets the whole lot right. These few, this leaven, these few, are enough to hold back heaven. Heaven is moved by these few people — but people who have a spiritual scent about them, a spiritual fragrance. Heaven is moved, and on the strength of these few, heaven holds back and gives the others an opportunity to repent, to turn back, to come to their senses. So I don't know, at any rate, how this matter stands with you. As for me, when I see that He is asking me to be salt,
then I have to see to it that I become salt. And not some other kind of salt, but the real thing. Allow me to tell you an incident that shows how one young girl who had been salted in Christ completely routed a large company of her old classmates. Once, one of them had received his diploma in Philosophy, and he thought it would be a fine thing to throw a party in his honour. A good many people came, and among those he had invited was this young girl — spiritually salted, as we've been saying, a girl of Christian life, modest, with her hair as it should be, serious. She took part in the midst of all those jokes, all that empty talk, all those crude remarks, all that foolishness.
— everything that goes on, unfortunately, as a matter of course on an evening like that. And in the end they wanted to draw her in, and they got up a contrived discussion about the existence of God, and various opinions were put forward by the male and female students to the effect that there is no God.
And indeed a moment came when she was called on to give her opinion. Little Mary, they said, we've noticed you keep quiet, as though you had something serious to tell us; you haven't taken part in our discussions at all, and a lot of us would like to hear you. So she was pressed and obliged to stand up and to speak in her turn. Sit down then, they said, and let's hear the great wisdom. In that situation she turned personally to the host, the one who was celebrating his own feast, so to speak,
the gentleman with the diploma, and she put this question to him. She said, since a discussion is going on about the non-existence of God, and it is justified on the grounds that God is not seen — does it follow that everything which is not seen does not exist? Is everything you cannot see to be reckoned as non-existent? Simply because we do not taste it, do not see it, do not touch it, and so on?
Speak up, she said, so the others can hear too. There's no getting around it. I am very sorry. I find myself obliged to conclude that you have no intellect, since you have never shown it to me. Allow me to withdraw. Do you grasp what happened there? Do you take in what happened? One young girl, whom all the rest — those brutes armed with their learning and the world's cleverness — had isolated, gave those clever debaters an answer worth writing in letters of gold. That is the kind of thing real, salted Christians do.

είναι που δεν σε εμφυριδικό με πως έρθω χάρος κανά, είδατε τον πότσαν τον άνθρωπο των άλλων προχθές, διαβάστε τα, ακούσετε αρχικά. Πού είναι ο Χριστιανισμός, περιμένει ο άλλος να δει, πώς θα τα βγάλει πέρα στη βαριά αρρώστια, πώς τη δυσκολία, πώς το διωγμό, πώς τη συκοφαντία. Περιμένει παράδειγμα. Αυτό είναι αλάτι. Αλατίζει την κοινωνία. Δυναμώνει ο άλλος. Το βλέπει στην πράξη το θέμα. Δεν βλέπει χριστιανισμό θεωρία. Πρέπει να τον αφήνει ψηλά. Τον κατεβάζει κάτω μέσα στη ζωή. Αυτό, εν γενικές γραμμές, λείπει και από εμάς τους λεγομένους χριστιανοί. Άνθρωποι με το Ευαγγέλιο στο χέρι τη λανδάνονται πολλές φορές διαπράττοντες όχι συγνώστα απλώς αμαρτήματα. Άφημα αμαρτήματα με το Ευαγγέλιο στο χέρι. Πώς είναι δυνατόν λοιπόν να διατηρηθεί η ωραιότης, η νοστιμάδα, πώς δεν είναι δυνατόν να καρυκευτεί αυτή η κοινωνία;
