Summary
The lecture resumes the Sermon on the Mount, reviewing all the Beatitudes and settling on the last one, which calls blessed those reviled and persecuted falsely for Christ's sake, whose reward is great in heaven. God's justice does not operate in this world, which is why Christ closed the scroll of Isaiah 61 in the synagogue after 'the acceptable year of the Lord' and omitted 'the day of vengeance,' having come not to judge the world but to save it. Works must pass through the fiery river seen by Daniel, and much of what we assume we have deposited in God's bank is wooden and will burn, while hidden people we never noticed will be found rich there.

Our subject will be the continuation of what came before. Those of you who were with us will remember that we were speaking from the Sermon on the Mount, and specifically from the Beatitudes. From my note here I see that our last lesson had to do with this Beatitude, which says, “Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say every evil word against you falsely, for My sake.” We spoke of “Blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the meek, blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, blessed are the merciful, blessed are the pure in heart, blessed are the peacemakers, blessed are the persecuted,” blessed are those who will be reviled. He finishes the Beatitudes and says: you who have managed to have these Beatitudes upon you, you who are poor and mourning and meek and this and that and the other — now rejoice and be exceedingly glad. Why?
“For your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” So let a person rejoice and be glad, and why? Because your reward is great in heaven. If we have these Beatitudes upon us, if we have these virtues, and we are among the persecuted and among those who are reviled — and I say now, are we waiting for the recompense, the misthapodosia, on that day, as we were saying then, or here? The truth is that we want our satisfaction here. But the Lord has said here quite clearly:
on that day, not here. So all those who grow bitter because they are just and find no justice, because they are humble and are persecuted, because they are the sort of people who stand by another in his pain and his need while the others do not stand by them in theirs — that is, they get nothing in return — let them correct themselves and let them swallow it. Because Satan is a craftsman, and he embitters a person and poisons a person, especially when that person is unprepared. You can do every good thing in this world, but you will be rewarded in that world.
Nothing is left unsettled there. Whatever you do, whatever you think, whatever you carry out, whatever you leave behind in this world and do not enjoy here — for the sake of that world, in the proper time you will be paid. Saint Nilus the Ascetic says this in his fiftieth question: “You will lose nothing” — you will lose nothing — “of what you offer up for the Lord,” of what you leave for the glory of God and for your own soul. “For in its own time it will come back to you many times over.” The time that He has appointed, not the time that you and I appoint. No.
We must know that God does not act according to what our ego wants, or according to our own interest, the interest of this world. He always acts for the sake of that other interest. And if we are truly humble, we ought really to accept playing the part of the carpet: to be trodden on, but never to tread on others. Thank you. But this is not genuine in us, and so we grow bitter, saying, “I do this, and I have that, and I play such a big part — so why?” There is no why. In fact, from the very moment you think of doing something good, something right, something beautiful, as they say, for the glory of God and for the benefit of your soul, you must be prepared for temptation, for exactly the opposite.
I don't know whether you have read the second chapter of the Wisdom of Sirach, where it says, “My child, if you are thinking of pleasing God, prepare your soul for temptation.” Prepare your soul for temptation.
Here is a patristic thought, a refined one. “Do not rejoice when you do good to someone.” Do not be flattered. Do not let your egotism be satisfied when you do a kindness to your fellow man. You stood by him in his need, you loosened a little the noose that some circumstance had tightened around him, you stood by him in his pain, you stood by him in his necessities — do not allow yourself to feel satisfaction inside, because you will lose your reward if you feel satisfaction. Do not rejoice at that, “but rather when you endure without holding a grudge — amnesikakia — the hostility that follows it,” when you do him good and he does you evil.
You do him good and he curses you on top of it — then, he says, rejoice. Don't be glad that he says thank you, that he says, “I will remember you, I will hang your photograph up high among my benefactors, and your father's too.” That sort of thing. No. You should rejoice, in fact, when the opposite happens — then rejoice, then say, “This is all you should say to me, and more besides.” That is when you have been benefited. Because when you are permitted to rejoice, it means you have been edified, and you will rejoice — but not the way the world rejoices, the ego of the world. For there are people who do not stand by others in their pressing needs and do not lend a hand in good works to help those who lead — clergy or laity — to build something good, unless their name is carved into some list of benefactors or some list of donors.
Unless their name goes into the newspaper so that it can be seen — then they are satisfied; that is what such people rejoice in. But this is not right. “Do not rejoice,” he says, “when you do good to someone, but rather when you endure without holding a grudge the hostility that follows it” — when you hold no malice there where you gave manna and they gave you gall. Where we are ready to bite them. And he gives a fine illustration: “For just as night follows day, so malice follows acts of kindness.” Is it not natural for night to cover the day? In just the same way it is natural for the other person's malice to cover over your good deed. And instead of saying a simple thank you, or saying, “Glory to God,” you get an earful on top of it.
So this rules out our expecting applause, for instance, or “bravo,” or congratulations, or thank you, in this world. Because a person must know, generally, that when he does something he is not doing it to the one standing in front of him whom he sees, a hand, for example, asking him for something. He is doing it to Christ, who may well have stretched out His hand and be asking me for my coin. You do it to Christ, who may well have His bare back exposed and be asking for my coat. You do it to Christ, who may well be barefoot and be asking for my shoes — even out of my surplus, if not out of my need. You do it to Christ. And if a person does not receive a thank you from another person in this world,
he will receive it from Christ in that world. A person may be ungrateful — and ingratitude is a deadly sin. God does not want it. God gives no rest to the ungrateful person. And you remember the complaint He voiced over the lepers that day: “But where are the nine?” Where are the others? Only one was found; ten were cleansed. In us, ingratitude is joined to our very skin — it will come off along with the skin, if we are to get ingratitude off ourselves. Because we arrange everything as though we will settle it, we will do it, we worked, we took care of it, we made provision. God enlightened you, God comforted you, God surrounded you with support, God gave you the knowledge, the work, the strength. They are God's, not your own.
So people who claim these things as their own are robbing God; they are ungrateful toward God. What do you have that you did not receive? Take sight, take hearing, take smell, take strength, take understanding — what is there that you did not receive, that you have from yourself? You have nothing from yourself. So why do you boast as though you had not received it — as though you were self-made, as though you were clever, as though you were the one who gets things done, as though you were the merciful one? Everything is from God, and the credit must be given there. So this business of His carrying us over to that other time to wait for our recompense — for this there have to be strong people. Because we want it now, hand to hand, as we say. I'll do for you so you'll do for me; I'll give to you so you'll always wag your tail; you'll be the one I benefit and I'll be your benefactor, and so on and so forth. These are not beautiful things.
You should know that in this world the justice of God does not operate; and since justice does not operate, how are you going to be vindicated? Man does not vindicate you; God says, “I will vindicate you then.” So why do you not show patient endurance? Why do you lose your reward and lose the things you gave? Why do you pour poison over those beautiful things you did? I don't know whether you know this. When our Christ stood up to read in the synagogue — the Evangelist Luke writes it in the fourth chapter, verse ten and following — He read: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me; He has sent Me to preach good tidings,” the lame, the blind, and—
there He comes to a certain place and says, “and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.” He said these words, He read it out. It is from Isaiah, the sixty-first chapter. He searched through this book of Isaiah that was handed to Him and found the passage, the place that had been written about the Christ who was to come into the world. And then He said, this prophecy has been fulfilled today. He was writing about Me. But there it also says, “the acceptable year of the Lord,” and He stops, and closing the book, He shut it. Now here is the strange thing. If we go and look up the corresponding passage in Isaiah, we will find that the passage does not stop there;
it goes further, and He ought to have spoken about what comes further as well. And do you know what it says further on? “And the day of vengeance of our God.” Why do You tell me only this much, Lord? Are You unlettered, do You not know how to read? What do we say at school? Don't they say that is where it stands? The end of the age — why do You not say that too, along with “the acceptable year of the Lord”? You passed over it and said only “the acceptable year.” But I did not come to judge the world. I came to give a margin of time, so that all who repent within that time, within that margin of time, may be saved. “And He will come again to judge the living and the dead” — that is another matter altogether. I did not come for that. And He cuts it off right there. So it shows that Christ did not come to judge the world.
And if He Himself does not judge the world, how can a man judge the world and demand justice from his fellow men? We go wrong because we haven't done our reading. And so today you see the righteous being persecuted, the honest having no standing in the world, while people float to the top — the nobodies, as we were saying, the people of darkness, the schemers, these are the ones who float, while the others are cast out like scapegoats. “Where is God?” they say. Why does He leave that poor little hand for the strong man to exploit? Why does He leave that young girl for the businessman to exploit, demanding her honour in exchange for a piece of bread, for a bit of work? “Where is God?” people say.
But this, of course, is hardly a complaint of our own day. David said it too. “Don't You see,” he says to You, “what is going on?” And the Lord answers him: He who made the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? He does see. But this is how He must work and act today. What did Jeremiah say? He says, how is it that these wicked ones have multiplied and prospered? They get ahead — money for them, sheep for them, cattle for them, and this and that. And you, he says to God, tell me: how do these things happen? He too was asking for justice. So from that time until now, all the more so, since we live in the age of grace and have heard these things, since Christ did not come into the world to judge the world but that the world through Him might be saved, as John says — let us not seek our satisfaction
and payment. Why should we want payment? Payment for our labour, for our sweat, for our good deeds, for instance — our works, if they hold up, because many of our good works do not hold up before the justice of God and we will not find them waiting for us there. But I want you to know this as well: the justice of God does operate. On the one hand I say it does not operate. On the other hand it does. How do the two go together, someone will ask me. Just so. “When are you telling the truth, Mr. Panagopoulos?” I am telling the truth on both sides. There is satisfaction even today, and vindication, but at one percent. Out of a hundred who are wronged, one will be vindicated. So that it may be shown that there is Someone who renders justice where men do not render it.
And among the wicked, one will be punished. The ninety-nine will be left to be punished then. One will be punished. So the justice of God does appear today, both for the good and for the evil, but at a very small percentage. Paul, writing to the Hebrews in the eleventh chapter, where he speaks about faith — if those of you who read remember — says there in what manner they were all saved and are God's chosen ones through faith. And he says there, “And what more shall I say? For time would fail me” — time carries me off before I can tell it all — “if I were to tell of Gideon and of Barak and of Samson,
of Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again.” This scandalises some people, and they do not know what the Apostle is saying here. The women who received their dead raised to life are the widow of Zarephath in Sidon and the woman who gave Elisha lodging.
Their children had died, and the one was raised by the prophet Elijah and the other by the prophet Elisha, and so those women received their dead by resurrection — their children, that is; it does not mean that they were married. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. And others had trial of mockings and scourgings, and moreover of bonds and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they died by the slaughter of the sword. They went about in sheepskins and in goatskins — they would put on hides taken from goats. And they would sit out in the sun, and the hide would dry hard on them, and in that way they wore themselves down with hardship. In goatskins.
Destitute, afflicted, ill-treated; of whom the world was not worthy. The world cannot take hold of such things. The world belongs to sin and to the flesh, not to the Spirit. The world is not worthy of virtues like these, worthy that such people should have so great a reward. And he goes on and says: wandering in deserts and in mountains and in caves and in the holes of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, did not receive the promise. They have not yet received their crown, he says — not even those from the foundation of the world, from righteous Abel onward, as we said earlier. No one has been crowned right up to this day. Why, O Apostle? Because God foresaw something better concerning us.
That they should not be made perfect apart from us. Because God, he says, had something better in mind. You wait as well, until the others come, the ones of the New Testament, and then all together on one great day, at one great festival, you will receive the crown you deserve. So not even they have yet been vindicated — the prophets of the Old Testament and that whole company of faith, along with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Of course they passed over to the right hand, into Paradise, but they do not yet have that glory, and that reward, and that crown which they will receive on the day of the Last Judgment. For earlier on everyone went down to Hades, to one single place. When Christ descended He gave life to the spirits in prison, to those who accepted His preaching and who had also heard the preaching of John; and then things were separated. There remained Hell and Paradise.
So some, right up to today, have gone to Hell, but they have not been cast down into the depths as much as they deserve. And others have gone to Paradise, but they have not been rewarded as much as they deserve. So the justice of God does not operate today. It is the axe that lies at the root of the tree, at the feet of John the Forerunner in the Gospel. When you see that axe, that is the justice of God. He has not yet punished; He has not yet cut down what is rotten. And neither has He yet given out what certain people deserve, above all those hidden people whom God alone knows. Because on that day we shall see astonishing things — people our eye never noticed, who turn out to have some relationship with God, who turn out to be working what is good.
Who are humble as God wants them to be, who are meek, who have patient endurance and so on, who are peacemakers. We shall see them on that day, when God uncovers everything, when He lifts this veil from over us and helps a person to see the things he has never seen. So here He is saying that on that day you will receive your reward. You will rejoice on account of that day. So do not expect it today: your reward is great in heaven. From today the believer is within God, only he does not know it. Read, if you like, the third chapter of Paul's letter to the Colossians, and see what it says there. It says there that the believer is with Christ in God.
If then you were raised together with Christ — he writes this in Colossians chapter three, verse one — seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. If you really are spiritual people who have been raised up, then look upward; do not look downward. Look at the things of the Spirit and not at the things of the flesh.
Set your mind on the things above, not on the things on the earth, for you have died. You have died to what is below — to the world, to the flesh, to the ego, to self-interest — and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Our life is hidden, he says, with Christ in God. That is to say: the believer, Christ, God. From today we are in heaven. Those, of course, who are close to Christ and who act the way Christ wants. There will be one small episode, which is called death. The shell that we call the body will be cracked open. And the shell will stay down here, and the little bird will fly off to its own place, where it is meant to go. From today. That is why the believer, the one who is truly and humbly faithful, tastes it in advance; and whatever may happen to him, he carries an inner assurance of that joy, and it makes everything bearable already here. If he really is a Christian, he has this assurance — that is, in his case there applies the word, For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. We are not in such a beautiful position. We want the good we do to meet good in return. I do not trouble anybody; I only ask that nobody trouble me. Since I look after you, why do you not look after me?
Then what grace is that to you? What reward are you expecting from God? If you expect the reward to be handed to you by the very person you did the kindness to? Or are you willing to do good only to the one who will do good back to you and keep saying so, who will regard you as his benefactor and his protector — and you are not willing to do it for someone else who might well curse you for it? It is not exactly the way we have arranged it in our own minds. The parable of the Good Samaritan sets out three conditions of people, which Paul also has in his letter to the Corinthians, where he speaks of the soulish man, the fleshly man and the spiritual man. There are fleshly people, there are earthbound people, and there are spiritual people. These three categories.
In the parable of the Good Samaritan there is one who took and did not give, the robber; there is one who did not take but also did not give, the Levite; and there is one who did not take but gave, the Samaritan. Which category are you in? I do not trouble anybody, I only ask that nobody trouble me. You are not worth a penny. But my good man, I do no harm to anyone. Well, are you a robber, that you should do harm? Are robbers the only ones who do harm? The robber took from you; he said, what is yours is mine. The other one, the Levite, took nothing: what is yours is yours, your pain included, and what is mine is mine. I took nothing from you, so I give you nothing. The third one, without taking anything at all, came down, poured out his own flasks of oil and wine, set the man on his own animal, and took him to the inn.
For his treatment, and he took on the cost of the man's recovery as well. Which category are you in, my friend? You do not steal, you do not rob — but neither do you offer to sacrifice yourself for the other person. We are rather in the category of the Levite. We do not take, but neither do we give. We do not trouble anyone — but let no one trouble us.
I trouble nobody, but if anybody troubles me... That is the sum of the achievement of a great many men and a great many women. And in Christianity, in a case like that, not one single step has been taken. A person who simply does not trouble other people is worth nothing at all. Well then, when he is troubled, does he trouble back? No. When he is troubled he should not trouble back — but he must also give what is good and do what is good. So we have no goodness upon us, and no Gospel works that will hold up; and as a result we are not armed to have the patient endurance that would let us receive our reward on that day. Christ has said it plainly: it is up there that you will have your reward. And rejoice, because it is up there that you will have your reward. Now I would like to give you a simple example.
Would it not be better if our reward were great here on earth? Whatever He may give you here, however good it may be, it is like those three-million-drachma notes from the occupation years. Whatever He gives you — what is it that He would give you? It is like those three million from the occupation. But from up there, even a single penny He gives you is currency in eternity that never loses its value. I do not want to be paid here. I do not want it. It is like what Saint Hilarion said to the devil, who appeared to him in the form of Christ. He said to him: Hilarion. And Hilarion says, I do not want to see my Lord in this world. I want Him to count me worthy to see Him in that world. And the thing dissolved into a puff of black smoke and vanished — it was the devil. So I do not want to be paid here. And if we take it a step further, not even that ought to be in a person's mind. Because if a person does something, or is humble-minded, or becomes the reason that someone else finds peace.
Or is the pillar and the comforter of the person in pain, of the widow, of the orphan, or has every good thing upon him — even then he cannot claim, I have done this, therefore I am entitled to that. Freely and without reckoning, as our Christ does, in His love and His open-handedness, He gives to a person in proportion to faith and to works. The one is one thing, the other is another. But I must not expect it, and I must not claim it as my due. And pay attention to this, because many of you, when the accounts are settled with Christ, will find yourselves deceived. You will expect to find things there, works, good deeds that you did here — and you will not find them there. Why? Because they do not stand up in the Judgment.
Before the Judgment a river of fire passes by. Have you seen the Byzantine iconography of the Last Judgment? Have you read in Daniel how he saw the thrones, and the river of fire passing by in front of them? It is through that river of fire that our works will pass. And if it is gold, says Paul to the Corinthians, and if it is silver, and so on, they will hold up and pass through. But if they are made of wood, he says, they will be lost, they will burn. For many of us our works, and our whole way of life in general, are very wooden indeed; they do not hold up; Christ does not recognise them. And although we think we have something, that we are holding on to something, that we have deposited something in the bank and that one day we shall collect it, we shall find that we have deposited nothing at all in the bank; and there will turn out to be people who never did anything of that visible, material kind, and they will be found with large deposits in the bank of God up there.
In contrast to many of us, who will find nothing there although we did a great deal down here. Either because we did it badly, or because we did it for our own egotism and did not do it because we were under obligation to do it. If you have the Philokalia at home, take care to read in the first volume. You have much to be benefited by there, in many ways and on many levels. There are many things in there, above all around the very subject I am speaking to you about at this hour: works, and justification by works, and people here expecting to be paid. Our reward — says one of the Fathers of the Church — is to be understood in this way. It is given, he says, not.
For the services rendered by the Christian, not for the works the Christian performed, but out of the grace of God. God wills it and He gives it to you. It is not that He is paying you your day's wages. God is not a business transaction, that I should work for Him so that He pays me a daily wage. And that is why, when people wanted to do something but had no way of doing it — oh, if only I could get there, if only I could go and sit up all night beside that person who is in pain tonight, if only I could take him a pair of shoes, buy him a book, get him a medicine — ah, that is taken into account by God. He who wills to do something and cannot do it is, before God who knows the hearts, as one who has done it.
The One who sees inside you your struggle and your humility and your readiness — in the eyes of God, he says, it is as though you had done it. But there is another line further on, and that is where many of us are caught. And this, he says, must be understood both of good things and of evil ones. You turn it over in that little mind of yours: ah, if only I could get over there tonight, ah, with that person, this and that and the other. But the neighbour upstairs is there, and the police are over there, and it is night, and so you do not do it. You are guilty all the same. Just as He rewards your good intention that you never managed to carry out, so He will judge your evil intention even though you did not carry it out. Because if He gives you the opportunity, you will do it. If you have made sure of the prosecutor, of the husband, of the wife, of the father, of the policeman, of what people will say, you will do it. And so, what is left?
We should keep in mind an opinion that will humble us, so that the Beatitudes we spoke of earlier may really have something to do with us. Listen: as many of us as have been counted worthy of the washing of regeneration, as many of us as were baptised, we offer our good works not as repayment, we are not paying anything off, but for the guarding of the purity that has been given to us. That is to say: I am baptised into Christ. And since I am baptised into Christ, my body belongs to Christ. Just as, when I am married, my body belongs to my wife; and my wife, being married, belongs to me. I have no right to make my body a member of a harlot, because it is not my own. Do you remember what Joseph the All-Comely said to that corrupt woman, the wife of Potiphar? Do you remember it, do you hold on to it? My lady, he says, in this house I am the one who manages everything. Your husband, my master, has handed me the keys. He knows nothing — not what money there is, not what produce there is, nothing. I hold it all, I administer it all, except for you. You belong to my master. Corrupt woman, you are not mine, nor is your body your own; it belongs to my master. You belong to another. And from all this, that young man, Joseph the All-Comely, is a type of Christ. Read in Genesis.
You will find there, from chapter thirty-seven onward as far as chapter forty-one, the events of Joseph the All-Comely, and you will see how he sets the matter out. So if, he says, you have received the washing of regeneration, and it has given you new birth, then you are a member of Christ, and you do not belong to yourself. If you do not do evil, if you do not steal, if you do not commit fornication, if you do not swear falsely, if you do not kill, and so on and so on — you do this in order to guard your purity. Because when you steal, as Judas used to steal, and Satan found the window open and came in through that window of theft, and seized him and sent him off, and he hanged himself. So when you steal, what are you doing? You are opening the window for the devil to come inside, and he comes and he dirties the purity that.
Christ gave you at your Baptism, your new suit of clothes. I do not commit adultery, I do not commit fornication, I do not blaspheme — so that Satan may not come in that way and do me damage, and put out the light that was given me on the day of my Baptism. Do not quench the Spirit, says Paul. What is this Spirit that we received on the day of our Baptism? On the day of Baptism the Holy Spirit strikes a match, and He lights a light inside our soul. Satan wants to put that light out for us. And what is the way it gets put out? If we commit deadly sins. Deadly sins open the door for Satan to come in, and he puts out that light. And afterwards, instead of the person blushing, it is other people who blush at the life he leads. The person is darkness; he has no light.
he doesn't even realize what he's dealing with, what it is he's doing — he treats it as an achievement. There are people who, in the marketplace, in the coffee shop, at gatherings, tell everyone about their filth, their brutish filth, as if they were about to be handed the Nobel Prize. As if they were benefactors, great benefactors. That is how much darkness, how much distortion they have suffered, because the light has gone out. And in the dark a person doesn't know where he is going, doesn't know what he is doing, doesn't know what he is saying. So that is the point here. You don't do good works in order to pay God back, to settle a debt with Him. No — you do them in order to guard what He gave you as a free gift. The salvation of a person is a free gift; it does not come from works. Better still, listen to the definition: 'The Kingdom of Heaven is not the wage of your works.'
'It is not the wage of your works' — because how could the Kingdom be payment for the day's labour you put in, the Kingdom of Heaven? Rather, it is prepared by the grace of the Master for His faithful servants — prepared for the faithful. I may not be able to do anything at all: I have no hands, no feet, no eyes, no tongue. You have hands, you have feet, you have eyes, you have a tongue. And it is entirely possible that I will enter the Kingdom of Heaven and you will not. Because the things you did — and you certainly did more of them than I did, since you had all the equipment that could help you do something — you believed you were paying God with them. You believed God owed you for them. And God does not accept these showy big spenders. 'I'll do it all myself!'
you have nothing to hope in — I save you, My own blood saves you, I was sacrificed, I set your relationship with God in order and settled that outstanding account. I tore the veil with My own blood and with My own Cross on Golgotha. And so you have contact with God, and that is how what we call the Beautiful Gate, the Holy Doors, came to be — otherwise there would be no Beautiful Gate. Because that is where people pass through to the Kingdom of Heaven. They don't go by some side path; they go through there. 'Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Saviour, save us.' That is where the ticket is given out. That is where the forgiveness of sins and eternal life are given. From there you hear, 'Save, O God, Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.' There, at the Beautiful Gate. The Beautiful Gate, and the contact between a person and God, came about because Christ sacrificed Himself for you. So am I to be paid because you and I gave away a pair of shoes — shoes I threw out because they didn't fit me, because they gave me blisters — and for that you'll put me into the Kingdom of Heaven? You're paying for the Kingdom of Heaven! The Kingdom of Heaven is inherited!
a relative — then you inherit. If you are not a relative of God, you have no right to inherit. If you are a king's child, you will inherit a kingdom. If you are not a king's child, you do not inherit a kingdom. And who makes you a king's child? The blood of Christ the King, which you drink — that is what does it. So you will give, and you can wait. Therefore, the Kingdom of Heaven is not the wage of works, but is prepared by the grace of the Master for His faithful servants. 'But,' someone says, 'I avoid sin, I struggle — don't I have a claim?' Do you know what the saying is? 'Abstaining from sin is the work of our nature, not the purchase price of the Kingdom.'
because you avoid sin, does the Kingdom of Heaven belong to you? No. 'Abstaining from sin is the work of our nature.' You get on the train and it says 'no smoking' — it says it in English too. The Greeks know it, of course; it doesn't say 'forbidden' anywhere, just 'no smoking.' Fine — forbidden it is; but whether you put up that sign or not, I don't smoke. It isn't aimed at me. It is the same thing here. So it is not the case that because I don't commit the sin I am going to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I cannot commit the sin. 'Thou shalt not steal' — I don't steal, and I don't even feel any urge to steal. In fact, the moment I saw that door left open I started to be afraid — afraid they might accuse me — and I say to myself, oh dear, they've forgotten this door, someone might take something from them and we'll be the ones who lose out. Whereas the crafty man would say the moment he saw it, 'Ah, they forgot it — now I'll clean them out.' The one who has been reborn has had his nature changed and cannot steal; in fact he is afraid and trembling until the owners come, in case anything goes missing. The other one, you know, says to himself, 'Right, now we'll clean the place out.' So you see, it isn't the way we thought.
another man's wife, or another woman's husband, and you lower your eyes. You shouldn't have to. You see a brother, you see a sister. When? When you have been reborn, when your nature has been changed. And besides — can you applaud an orange tree because it produces oranges? What else was it going to produce? It's an orange tree, and it produces oranges.
I have been grafted onto the bitter-orange stock. What did the bitter-orange tree produce before? Bitter oranges. And now, how does it produce all these sweet oranges? Did it change itself, all on its own — is it the tree that does this? Or is it the graft they made, cutting a cross here and splitting it open and inserting the shoot underneath and binding it up? However it is done — that is what does it. So then, who is doing all this? Christ does it; are you doing it? So you have no claim to anything. If we take that away from here,
but he believes they are his own doing, you know, 'me, I did it.' And there are people, unfortunately, who write down and keep a record of their good works so that they will be registered. What do they want with them? And others throw out slogans: do one good deed a day. Why — if a man does a hundred, is he harmed? And if he manages not to do a single one, has he lost everything? Will he be saved because he did them, or condemned because he didn't? Is that where salvation begins? That is not where salvation begins. Salvation begins with the fact that I believed in Christ. And I was baptised into His death, into Christ. And I receive Holy Communion, the blood and the body of Christ. And I hope in Him — whether I do works or whether I do not. Not out of some calculation, so as to avoid doing them: if I can do them, if I am able, I will do them. But if I cannot do them — the elder brother of the Prodigal did plenty, and he stayed outside.
and the Pharisee — he stayed outside. The Publican did nothing, and he went in. The Prodigal, the younger son, did nothing, and he went in. The thief on the right did nothing, and he went in. What else can you say to me? You don't want to see these things yet, and you are expecting your reward here. You have no reward here. It is there, on that day.
we don't pay attention to these things as we should. That is why we so often grow bitter and say, 'Where is God? I never even stepped on an ant.' It would have been better if you had walked over every anthill there is and left them alone. Satan is fooling you into thinking you were being careful about ants. Whatever a person does in this world, let him expect no repayment. First of all, the Lord will look after him, will give him what he needs in this world, and will shelter him accordingly. But in that other world he will receive a place corresponding to his works and to his faith.
I say this again, and I would like to remind all of us to read, if we possibly can — and if nothing else, since Satan doesn't leave us alone — at least these three chapters of the Gospel: the fifth, the sixth and the seventh of Matthew. Everything in there is on a lofty level. And don't rush to get through the verse, to get through the page, to get through the chapter. Stop at every single word. These are not human words. It is Christ Himself speaking. Picture Him there, where He sat and delivered what we call the Sermon on the Mount to His disciples.
and now He Himself has entered into a piece of paper called Scripture, called the Gospel, and you can put it in your pocket, put it in your bag, put it on your bedside table, put it on your desk, hold it in your hand on the trolley bus on the way to work, and ask Him to speak to you about the things that concern you. That paper is Christ Himself — the same one who was then Christ in the flesh. The very same. 'These are they which testify of Me,' says Christ. Read it in John, chapter five, verse thirty-nine. 'And ye will not come to Me' — because it is about Me that we are speaking — 'that ye might have eternal life.' 'Let not thy right hand know what thy left hand doeth,' He says. Let us hold on to that, let us bind it to ourselves. Let us make it our care to put the Beatitudes into practice.
let us wait in humility for Him to reveal us as His own, either in this world or in that other one — which is what I pray for more, and what I desire more: that other world, which I pray for, for one another and for all.

άνω φρονείτε, μη τα επί της γης, απεθάνεται γάρ, πεθάνεται κάτω για τον κόσμο, για τη σάρκα, για το εγώ, για το συμφέρον και η ζωή ημών κέκρυπται συν το Χριστό εν το Θεό. Η ζωή μόνο είναι κρυμμένη, λέγει, συν Χριστό εν το Θεό. Δηλαδή πιστός Χριστός Θεός. Από σήμερα είμαστε στον ουρανό. Όσοι βέβαια κοντά στον Χριστό και ενεργούν όπως θέλει ο Χριστός. Ένα μικρό επεισόδιο θα είναι που λέγεται θάνατος. Θα χτυπηθεί το τσούφλιο που λέγεται σώμα. Και θα μείνει το τσούφλιο κάτω και το πουλάκι θα πετάξει να πάει στη θέση του, εκεί που πρέπει να πάει. Από σήμερα. Γι' αυτό ο άνθρωπος, ο πιστός, ο πραγματικά ταπεινά πιστός προγεύεται και οτιδήποτε να του συμβεί έχει μια πληροφορία εσωτερική μέσα του, της χαράς εκείνης που όλα τα διασκεδάζει από εδώ. Εάν όμως είναι ο πραγματικός χριστιανός έχει αυτή την πληροφορία, δηλαδή εφαρμόζει την περίπτωση αυτή το «Ζην Χριστώς τε το αποθανήν κέρδος». Εμείς δεν τα έχουμε έτσι όμορφα, εμείς θέλουμε το καμόν το καλό να βρίσκουμε καλό. Εγώ δεν πειράζω κανέναν, δεν θέλω να με πειράξω, εφόσον εγώ σε προσέχω, εσύ γιατί δεν με προσέχεις;
άνθρωπος που βλέπει μέσα σου την αγωνία σου και... σου και την ταπεινωσή σου και την προθυμία σου, είναι λέει σαν να το έκανες στα μάτια του Θεού. Όμως έχει και ένα άλλο παρακάτω που εκεί μας πιάνει πολλούς. Τούτο δε και επαγαθείς και επικακείς νοητέων. Κατανβάλεις σε στο μυαλουδάκι σου, αχ να πήγαινα εκεί απόψε, αχ με εκείνον αυτό, τούτο μετάλο κλπ. Αλλά είναι ο Μπαρμπαγιώργος από πάνω, είναι η αστυνομία από εκεί, είναι νύχτα και δεν το κάνεις. Πάλι είσαι ένοχος. Όπως σε αμείβεις την καλή σου πρόθεση που δεν φτάνεις, έτσι σε δικάσεις την κακή σου πρόθεση ας μην το κάνεις. Διότι αν σου δίνει ότι ευκαιρία θα το κάνεις. Αν έχεις εξασφαλίσει τον Εισαγγελέα, τον σύζυγο, τη σύζυγο, τον πατέρα, τον αστυνόμο, τον κόσμο, θα το κάνεις. Κατά συνέπεια, τι υπολείπεται;
