Summary

The talk continues the series on the Beatitudes in Matthew 5, moving from 'blessed are the peacemakers' to 'blessed are those persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.' First Peter 3:14 and 4:14 promise that suffering for righteousness is blessed and that the Spirit of glory rests on those reproached for Christ's name, illustrated by the disciple of Saint Paisios the Great who lost the grace of his baptism by conceding a single doubt to a Jewish traveler on the road to Alexandria and was refused entry to the monastery until he confessed it. The truth must be upheld with humility rather than egoism, unjust persecution may be permitted to settle older debts and should be borne by 'standing under' (ypo-meno) the mighty hand of God, and the confession of Luke 17:10 that we are unprofitable servants disarms the sword of divine justice, as the humility of the Canaanite woman did.

And tonight our subject will be a continuation of the last one. Those of us who were together for the previous talks will remember that we were speaking from the fifth chapter of Matthew, and specifically from the Sermon on the Mount, and above all from the Beatitudes. As I see from my notes, we had reached, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." That was last time's lesson. And tonight the continuation brings us the next beatitude, which says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake."

"...for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."

This is a beatitude that for many people has no place at all; they think it is rather foolish. Because people always prefer to take justice into their own hands.

They will not stand for it.

He calls blessed those people who will not demand their rights here and now, even though they are speaking the truth.

They profess the truth and they work the truth. Because many people, when they do something right and meet opposition, say: "Now hold on. If I had said something ugly, if I had done something low, I would understand this. But this I do not understand." Take this in here and understand it: from the moment you do something good, you will be driven out. The good is always driven out. What is just, what is right, is driven out. The Wisdom of Sirach, in the second chapter, verse one, has a beautiful piece of advice that all of us ought to know.

It says there: "My child, if you come forward to serve the Lord, prepare your soul for temptation."

If you are going to do something good, if you are going to pursue something good and worthwhile, both for this world and for the next, get ready to be tested. But most of us do not want that. And again, a very large proportion of us will not accept it under any circumstances. Everything good comes under attack. It is the tree that bears oranges that people throw stones at; nobody throws stones at a tree that bears nothing. The devil attacks every single person who pursues something good — in their own person, in their family, in the world around them — everyone who pursues what is good, what is right.

Anything in this world that has the strength to pass over into the other world as well and to stand in eternity — that will always come under attack. So let us not complain, because our Christ — I do not know whether you have ever read John — in John, chapter fifteen, verse twenty, says this:

"Remember the word." Remember what the word says. Remember it, talk it over among yourselves, this that I am putting before you. Who is there who is willing to speak the truth and gets told, "Well done"? Who is there who is willing to stand up and say, "This is not right," and finds himself accepted? On the contrary, they will find some choice names to call him by as well.

You speak the truth, and they will call you a fool: who talks about such things nowadays? Why don't you look after your own life and how you are going to get by? In other words: never mind your truth and all these things you are asking for; look at the times we are living in. That is the spirit of today. And this is exactly why the Gospel has authority for ever. What our Christ said was not only for that time, as certain people claim — the Gospel says "at that time" — yesterday and today the same, and unto the ages. The Lord has full authority in every age. The things our Christ said keep their saving power and their fulfilment in every age. So when He says, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake," He is speaking of the grace of the truth.

The ones who suffer in this world are those who dare to say: this is not lawful, this is not honest, this is not moral, God does not want this, the Gospel does not accept this. And those people will be persecuted. All who have dared to speak the truth have always been persecuted, right through the centuries. And He calls them blessed — think of the martyrs — because they were sacrificed, because they died, because they were maimed, because their blood was shed, because they stayed with the truth. They refused to acknowledge anyone other than Christ. That is the truth. And by remaining in the truth, they paid for it with their own blood. They honoured it. But they were in the Kingdom.

Here He says: all those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for the truth, they will be in the Kingdom of Heaven. Theirs is the Kingdom. As for the people who buried themselves along with the world, who lived as citizens of this world so as to have an easier time of it, so as never to come face to face with anyone — all those people have failed. Because it is written: whoever confesses Me before men. He does not confess Him, and for that very reason grace is taken away from him and the man is cast outside. He has nothing to do with the Kingdom of Heaven.

Let me give you some cases; think them over. I came across a man who in fact had four children, and the man was suffering. He had no work. I said to him, "How is it that you are going around looking for a job?" "I could not steal," he told me. He was working in a big store, but they were forcing him. The manager said, "Steal," and he said, "I cannot steal." "And what happened, did you leave?" "The moment I said it, they threw me out." The result was that they fired him. That man is persecuted for righteousness' sake. Listen to another example.

A young woman was married, and a few days later her husband sent her away.

Why did he send her away? Because he is abnormal. And why is he abnormal? Because she was a virgin. "It is not possible," he says, "for you to be normal in this day and age and come to me with your virginity." Do you not understand? We ought to be crowning that girl with a crown, because she remained a virgin right up to her marriage and presented herself just as she was, and she gave glory to the Lord. This is what we long for in our own times — that a person would take the lead in this, just as our Most Holy Theotokos said: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word."

And so you are driven out. And why are you driven out? Because of the good in you; because of how you look in the eyes of the world.

She wanted to preserve her virginity within marriage. And that costs a great deal. A great deal.

All such people get driven out. Do you want to speak the truth in the world today? They will pin a label on you straight away. And a man, afraid that they will pin that label on him, falls into line with the crowd and does not speak the truth. And as a result he is not troubled by anyone, he keeps a cheerful face, he gets on nicely with everybody. God does not like that. What He wants is that when you see something, you look at it squarely and confess it, however much you may be persecuted for it. The Lord has the power to protect you from that point onwards, where you yourself cannot protect anything. He has the power. But what we suffer from is a lack of faith.

Faith not even the size of a grain of mustard seed. And that is exactly why we back down. It may well be that you will hear a great many words spoken against you by the world, by the instruments of this world, of Satan, who does not know, who does not understand, who attacks, who fights — you may well hear them. Your name may be destroyed, and your reputation, and everything; the world may leave you nothing at all; they may drive your children out; your girls may find nobody to marry. But God will come, and in the end His truth will shine out over this world of ours. And I do not know whether you are aware of this: the justice of God is not carried out today. Only one in...

Out of a hundred who ought to be vindicated openly, one is vindicated; and out of a hundred who ought to be condemned and cut off from this world, sentenced straight to Hell, one is sentenced. Just enough for it to be seen that justice exists, justice on the right hand and justice on the left. And He has appointed one day on which He will judge the whole world in righteousness. Paul speaks of this in the eleventh chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews, where he speaks of those who through righteousness stopped the mouths of lions, and says that they are not to be made perfect apart from us, so that all of us together, on one great day, the Old Testament and the New, may receive what has been appointed for every person. And Peter, on this same matter, on persecution for righteousness' sake and on what it brings in this world, writes in his first epistle, chapter three, verse fourteen: 'But even if you should suffer' - even if you suffer for righteousness' sake - 'blessed are you.'

'And do not fear their threats, neither be troubled.' Do not be shaken because they persecute you for righteousness' sake. Do not let it make you leave the truth and fall silent instead of confessing it. And again the same Apostle says: 'If you are reproached for the name of Christ' - if you are reviled because of the name of Christ, that good name - 'blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.' When you are persecuted, when they go after your name, your reputation, your work, when they accuse you - and many times they can wrap us up in some piece of paper and drag us off to court. But rejoice inside, he says, because the grace of the Holy Spirit rests upon you. For if the grace of the Holy Spirit were not resting within you, you would not have the courage, the strength, the power to hold out. You would fold in with the others, you would take it back, you would give way, and you would say what a monk of Saint Paisios the Great once said. The elder had sent him to Alexandria, and on the road he fell in with a Jewish traveler, and they walked together, and the Jewish traveler kept insisting to him that Christ is not God and was not the Messiah, that the Messiah is someone else, the one they are still waiting for.

The monk had not read the Scriptures well enough, and he had no skill in argument, so he could not hold his ground with him from the Scriptures. And at one point he said to him: perhaps it is as you say. That was enough. The grace left him. And when he came back to the monastery that evening, Saint Paisios would not receive him. Do you see now? The man could find nothing in himself. He searched himself, he had done nothing, nothing at all, no offence, nothing - he was even asking for the blessing, and there was no blessing. He kept turning himself over trying to find what he could possibly have done that made the elder refuse him, because he had done nothing serious enough for such a refusal. What could it be?

The others interceded for him and pleaded with the elder to take him back. He came in, made a prostration, and the elder said to him at once: who are you? And he did not understand what was being said to him, until he remembered the conversation on the road to Alexandria that morning with the Jewish traveler. And when he asked again, the elder said: you denied Christ. Then he understood. Forgive me, he said. You were talking, the elder said to him, with the Jewish traveler, on your way to Alexandria. Then he remembered that he had said those words, and the elder brought him back and restored to him the grace of the Holy Spirit that he had received in Baptism.

So from this alone you can see how much we need to watch ourselves, our behaviour, our stand, our steadfastness. Not to defend the truth and righteousness with egotism, but with modesty. Forgive me, this is my opinion, it is not so. Paul disagrees with you, my dear friend. And our Lord disagrees with you, my dear friend. Say it from Scripture, say it beautifully, humbly, and stand firm. I repeat, you may be driven out, you may lose advantages, you may lose things and so on. You are persecuted. Why? Because you go there and you come back empty-handed, because you would not steal, because you would not take part in it. That is the truth of the matter.

You will be the scapegoat of the Old Testament, the goat driven out into the wilderness. That can happen. But in God's book you are counted blessed, and you have a share in the Kingdom of Heaven. There is a small confession that we cannot manage to make. I would rather we came to the point that I sometimes put to you and say: if we were living in the days of the persecutions, which of us would be a Christian? They serve us a sweet on a Wednesday or a Friday, in a fast, and we are ashamed to say anything, we do not even show that we are Christians. Over a sweet we are afraid of being misunderstood. So we push Christ aside and eat the sweet, so as not to be misunderstood by so-and-so and so-and-so, the same people you wish many years to so that they can go on doing the same things. Because if you said anything else to them - go on, just say many years. Why? So that they can go on doing the same things.

So that it never becomes a problem, and so that they never have to keep the days apart. And they say the occasions are many and one must do as the others do. But one must confess, and one must stand.

They will produce you as a witness for the prosecution, saying that you helped them go to Hell, and you yourself will go to Hell, and they will say: I saw what went on in that house, they came to my house, your people came here, and they never told me anything, they never told me it was not right, when they had the duty to tell me. They will bring it up against me. These are not small things, and we treat them as chance. We tie ourselves to the house, to the job, to Satan, and we do not cut ourselves free.

We do not want to fight. A good struggle to bring light. We are not going to hang the man in his own house, but we cannot fail to say two words. And so they misunderstand us, and so they wash their hands of us, and so they strike us out of their papers, out of their family circle. And perhaps those are the very people we depend on.

And if we lose them, we lose. But there is what our Lord said: if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better to be blind in Paradise than to have both eyes and go to Hell. Do you know what that means? We do not literally take out our eyes, and notice He did not say the left one, He said the right one. But if a man depends on someone like that, someone at his right hand, someone who supports him, whom he lives from and so on - He is saying that if that is going to cost you your soul, you will cut it off, you will lose it, you will be poor, you will be stripped bare, you will be this and this and this, He says. And so enter the Kingdom of Heaven, rather than stay outside and be considered clever, or gain the whole world.

A person, I repeat, ought to pay attention to these details that are said here about the Beatitudes, and to look at himself and see whether he has any place among them at all, and to despair of himself. And from the moment a person despairs of himself, from that point the grace of the Spirit begins to work. So every good thing, every right thing, every just thing, every honourable thing, every Orthodox thing is attacked. And I tell you, do not think that word 'Orthodox' is there by chance. Have you ever heard of any religion on earth with millions of followers being attacked in the way the Orthodox are attacked? We do not hear it.

Against Papism, against Protestantism, against Buddhism, against Monophysitism, against Protestantism - who raises a voice? Why? Because they are not the devil's problem. Orthodoxy alone is the nail in the devil's eye, and that is why it is attacked. It is attacked because it is the truth. If you think there is something in these things, keep whatever you think from them, and take care, with the grace of God, little by little, to move over to the side of the struggle.

But humbly. Allow me to say it. Let me say a word of wisdom too. There are various ways; the Greek language has many ways of serving up the strangest things painlessly, and if those who are well disposed are willing to receive them, they will be edified. If they are not willing to receive them, that is their own affair. But you have an obligation. There is a passage in Ezekiel that speaks about this - and who was it that heard? His blood will be required at your hand.

We are afraid, we say: we speak and they do not listen to us. Speak, even if they do not listen to you. But if you speak and he does not listen, he will bear it himself. It is not on your account any more; you have done what you had to do. So we have an obligation, wherever there is something right, something just, something pure, something Orthodox, to be clear and to confess it, if we want to have any share in these Beatitudes that I have been reading to you. Next there is another beatitude, which is bound up almost entirely with the previous one. There He says: blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you, lying, for My sake.

I do not know whether you caught it. He also calls blessed those who will be persecuted in a general way and will hear ugly, malicious, false words spoken against them - lying, for My sake - because there are many people even today like those who stood against Christ. You remember, the false witnesses came forward and made accusations, and a charge was framed against Jesus. And today there are such people. Out of nothing they create a whole situation.

They are not careful, and Satan puts a two-edged thing into their hand, so that in order to support some position of theirs they tell many lies against Christians. And when a person lies against a Christian, and that Christian suffers for it, it is as though Christ Himself suffers. And they do all this because of the good name of the Christian. Because you are a Christian, you are the nail in his eye. Some opponents cannot stand Christians. Without a second thought, they may lie, invent things that never happened, and testify to all sorts of things. And people suffer for that good name, for the name of Christ.

And some people say - as a strong soul once said to me, who was going through a great temptation, and at that moment I was saying: watch your tongue, do not get exasperated, do not lose what you have built up over twenty years. And she went on talking, because she had been provoked and her ego had been touched. At one point I said to her: do you know what those words of yours mean? Outside of Paradise. I do not even want Paradise, she says to me. I said, you have just said something very great; I pray our Lord does not hold it against you. Many times we rush, we are not careful, we are not armed as we ought to be.

What am I to do, but what did I... Yes, and the Lord did too, and they took Him up on the nail. Keep in mind some of the beautiful hymns that the Orthodox Church sings. What is it, He says to the Jews, for what are you crucifying Me? For the blind whose eyes I gave sight to, for the mad whose minds I restored, for the tombs I opened for you, for the eyes I made for you, for the demons I drove out - tell Me, He says, for which of these? For righteousness' sake Christ was crucified, He first of all, for righteousness' sake, because He did not go along with them. He did not say what His own ego wanted, He went against it, and it cost Him His head, as we would say. But behind Great Friday came the Resurrection. That is how it is.

Behind every Great Friday of a person's life comes a Resurrection. There is one thing I want to say at this point, because there may be people in this audience who are suffering today for righteousness' sake, because they wanted to stand well, because they wanted to keep their integrity, because they wanted to be honest, to be moral, to be this and this and this. And they found no response, and they are driven out on account of their faith in God. Perhaps even inside their own house. The wife by the husband, the husband by the wife, the children by the father, the father by the children, and so on. And they are driven out because of what is right. Let them not be deceived and accept it, because they will lose their reward.

Persecuted because they want to do something right, something that pleases God and profits their neighbour. Let them not allow themselves to accept it as their due. Rather let them accept that they are sinners and are suffering as sinners. And that they are crucified and tormented as sinners. Because many times the Lord permits us to be persecuted for righteousness' sake only in appearance.

...so that we can settle other, older accounts. It may well be that in this particular matter you are in the right. And that you are being persecuted unjustly. Simply because you make the sign of the Cross and you believe in Christ, in the Most Holy Theotokos, in the Saints. But if you examine yourself, and you also ask God how He can allow this, He will tell you: have patient endurance, because right now you are paying off old debts.

Other times we ought to have been crucified and we were not; we slipped away, and so we are being crucified now, we are being persecuted now, we are paying now. Accept it with humility. If you suffer unjustly, you are blessed. And if you suffer justly, you are ten times blessed. Because you are settling an account that you never once intended to settle. And the Lord permitted these temptations, these persecutions, this pressure, this crushing humiliation, in order to benefit you spiritually. Accept it, endure it. Notice the verb: it is hypo-meno, to remain under. It is a compound word: meno, I remain, plus hypo, under. Under the mighty hand of the Lord.

So then...

...the hand of God is above you and it presses down on you. Do not cry out. Sit still there; He will press you only as much as is for your good. It is like the doctor pressing on the place where you have the abscess, so that it drains away. You will be in pain, you will writhe, your ego will be broken, you will feel torn open. And yet what is happening to you is for your benefit. We do not think these things through; we look at them on the surface. "You know, I am innocent." Perhaps you are innocent now, and you are being persecuted unjustly. But was there not another time when you were not innocent, and you were never brought to account for it, and now it comes out on the ledger, and you will pay it with interest. So if a person were willing to be honest — not with God, but honest with himself,

...he would find that all of it is justified. And he would say, "Even though You say, Lord, that blessed are those persecuted for righteousness' sake, do not include me among them. Because I am not one of those." Then he would secure the prize. Yes, with this humility — because many people are of the opinion that in order to be egotists they have to stick feathers on their heads, like the Bersaglieri. No. There is a devilish humility that is worse than egotism. Worse than egotism — a kind of humility. Perhaps my argument sounds like a contradiction. There are some people who humbly believe, in their own opinion, that they are humble.

...that they are suffering, and that God in His justice will reward them, will give to them, and so on. Those people are lost from the very start. That is not humility. A humble mind-set will cost a person effort; he will be humiliated in order to attain it, and only then does everything else have value. On the basis of a humble mind-set, everything is turned to profit. Do whatever you like. Perform whatever good works you like. Be persecuted as much as the devil could ever wish. You will be condemned to Hell if you do not have a humble mind-set, and if you do not admit that you deservedly suffer these things. "When you have done all the things that were commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants." That is what it says in the seventeenth chapter of Luke.

...his thinking there. So when Christ sees such a mind-set, He is conquered. The sword of His justice falls out of His hands. That sword which cuts off the heads of those who do not think rightly — it falls out of His hands. He is disarmed. He suffers what He suffered out there with the Syrophoenician woman, the Canaanite woman. "Go," He says to her, "let it be to you as you wish." She has conquered Me. Bring a blank sheet of paper, let Me put My signature on it, and you write above it whatever you want. Not only that the child should be made well, not only that — whatever you want. Go; she has conquered Me. And how did she conquer? When she said, "Yes, Lord, and yet even the little dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from the

...table of their masters." She could have said to Him, quite justifiably, speaking as a human being would: "You do not want to give me what I am asking for — but do not call me a dog either." And He did call her a dog. And she turned even that to her advantage, through her humility, and she conquered Christ. Only cases like this conquer the justice of Christ; He is disarmed, and things change for that person more than he can possibly understand. So let us never be deceived into accepting that we are the persecuted ones. That we suffered, that we did so much, that we built so much, and all the rest of it. None of that. A humble mind-set — because even if we did suffer, even if we did hold out,

...if we did not blaspheme God and if we did not deny Him, that too is owed once again to His own grace and His own power. If He had not given us the strength, could we ourselves have held out? With whose ammunition? Who covered us, who guarded us, who bore with us, who fed us in the hard moments when we were ready to lose our minds altogether? Because, you see, the other one comes along too, the sadist, Satan, and he makes it worse, he scratches at the wound. Instead of your hearing two words of comfort, a balm to soften your whole being — you are not on your guard. And the other one comes and scratches at the wound and drives you even to suicide. Because God alone is the One who

...pours out mercy upon the heart of a person that is in pain, that is being tested, that is suffering, that is being persecuted for righteousness' sake, for the good that he is struggling for. Remember Joseph the all-comely, when that corrupt woman, the wife of Potiphar, entangled him and had him thrown into prison because he would not consent to go with her. You understand what pain there must have been inside the soul of that young man, and what a sense of grievance must have risen up in him, for holding to the righteousness of God and refusing to give in to the desires of that corrupt woman. Scripture writes there — and read it if you like, it is in Genesis, in the thirty-eighth chapter — when he went into prison among the criminals, they put him in the inner prison.

The Lord, it says, poured out mercy upon his heart, and softened his pain, because this man was persecuted, he held to righteousness, he refused to become an adulterer, he honoured his master's wife, he answered him with all seriousness: everything here I govern, everything I direct, everything I have charge of — except you. You belong to my master; I have no right to you. Or look at the corrupt men today who imagine they can hand over to another woman the self that belongs to their wife; or the corrupt women — and today that is a large percentage, sixty, seventy, eighty per cent — who imagine that they own themselves and can dispose of themselves wherever they see fit, and not that they belong to their husbands. One day they will find out.

...if they do not repent and turn back, one day they will find all of it out there, but by then it will be too late. The Lord, it says, poured out mercy upon his heart, because he could have gone as far as suicide and as far as denial. For Satan would certainly have been throwing it into his mind: "Where is your God? This God you say you can see, the God for whose sake you would not go with your mistress — where is your God? If He were God, would He let you go to prison? Do you really believe such a thing?" There is no doubt at all that the master craftsman with the little horns and the little tail said this to him. But the young man came through it, because he had a humble mind-set, and the Lord poured out His mercy, and he endured there in that arena of struggle, beginning right back from where his brothers sold him and threw him into the pit. So pay attention to these things that Scripture has here, while we keep them stowed away, we keep them hidden.

And these are not subjects that have come to us from Mars. They are our own, right here. They are about us. In almost every house there is a New Testament, either because of the grown-ups or because of the little ones who go to school — whether required or optional. And it stays shut, and it will go on staying shut. Magazines get opened, scientific books get opened, corrupt books get opened. The one thing that does not get opened, the one thing forbidden to be opened, is this. There is a certain master craftsman sitting cross-legged on top of it, forbidding it to be opened. And if anyone dares to make a charge at it, as we say, to open it and read even one line a day — not a chapter, not a page, one line — by the third day he will not open it, he will leave it lying there. From that alone a person can understand what power this Word, this Logos of God, has,

...the Word that is there on the paper. Do you know what the Gospel means, my beloved? Do you know what the New Testament means? It is Christ on paper. You have the Gospel on your bedside table; you have Christ on paper. Just as they had Christ then in the flesh, so now we have Him on paper. Ask Him. Open it and ask Him about your problem, about your situation, about whatever is weighing on you. There is no need to go to Bethlehem, no need to go to Capernaum, no need to go to Jerusalem to find Him. He is everywhere present. "Behold, I am with you all the days, even to the end of the age." We would have looked into a great many things — and especially today, when knowledge has been multiplied. Especially today, when so many patristic editions are being published, and the Orthodox Holy Fathers have taken up the interpretation of the whole of Scripture,

...from Genesis all the way to the Epistle of Jude. The Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, they have left to one side; they have not taken it up officially; they have treated it as a closed book. For everything else we have the judgment of responsible men. So it is not permissible for us today to be ignorant of the things that are so necessary for us. Our faith, in general terms, just like Scripture itself, has suffered a silting over, as we often put it. It is like a torrent that comes down now and then and brings what we call silt, and buries the beautiful mosaics underneath. Exactly the same thing has happened with our faith, and with the truths that are there in our Church and in our Gospel.

That is why many people are scandalised by certain things; that is why many people cannot defend the faith, they have nothing to answer with, because they do not know how to support it or what to base it on. And someone needs to take a shovel and clear all this away, so that those truths come out from underneath — those flashing pearls that are a person's eternal wealth. Now, the Jews used to read the Scriptures, and our Christ caught them out over it, as He tells us in the fifth chapter, verse thirty-nine, of John, and He says to them: "You search the Scriptures." Even in our own day, even now, if you go to Israel you will see people in the marketplace, Jews, walking along

...reading Scripture as they go, right there in the marketplace, while we are ashamed to lift our hand and make the sign of the Cross. Of course, if they ever decided to become Orthodox, they too would be ashamed to make the sign of the Cross. As things are now, the one we all know of does not trouble them; he puts no shame on them, nothing at all. If they came out and became Orthodox, they would suffer exactly what we suffer today. And you watch him going along reading Scripture, the little cushion under his arm and his child holding on here, by his jacket, and off he goes to the synagogue. Say what you like — throw yourself on the ground, let the sirens sound, let the world do whatever it wants; he keeps to his own road and reads the Scriptures. And even though he reads the Scriptures, he will not accept Christ. And Christ says to them then, and He says it now as well: "You search the Scriptures. You search them," He says, "you read them,

...because you think that in them you have eternal life." And by your own reckoning you say that eternal life is here inside these Scriptures. That is not how it is, He says. "And these are they which testify of Me." These write about Me. "And you are not willing to come to Me, that you might have life." I am eternal life. These are not the life; they speak about the life, and the life is I Myself. So when a person has this book covered over and buried away there, and when you ask him for it he cannot even remember where it is, and he has to call out to the little one to find it and bring it — it is simply not possible for such a person to know these details. And further, if a person is not willing to

...humble himself and ask, to humble himself and read the Holy Fathers, the God-bearing Fathers, it is not possible for him to understand even this Scripture. Can you grasp things you have not laboured over, that you have not prayed about, or in which you have not been given help? Only Protestantism claims that it understands the Gospel. But it is the very one that does not understand the Gospel. Because if it did understand the Gospel, then on the one hand it would be Orthodox, and on the other hand it would be one single heresy — it would not be three hundred and fifty offshoots. Because the one Spirit that guides, guides with certainty, so long as they are borne along by the Holy Spirit, to one interpretation. Whereas one man interprets it this way, another interprets it that way, "no, I do not think so, it is like this and like this and like this" — three hundred and fifty pieces. Who has the Holy Spirit, and which one is the truth?

So it does exist, and it exists only here. The Holy Spirit wrote through the Apostles and interpreted through the Fathers. We the Orthodox have a hundred and fifty-one volumes of patrology in our library, right there — and you will say, which of us ever went and read them? And if a man does bring them out, then the others will hear them too.

Today…

Today these books are being multiplied. Organisations put them out, private publishers put them out, and so on — they multiply them. But in whose houses are they? In plain language, some people say they don't understand them. Fine, you say that with a smile — you haven't got the teeth to crack the walnut. But you go and crack it in the door jamb, don't you? Every other nut you find a way to crack. You just aren't interested in cracking open this verse, in finding out what it says. You don't want to. Everything else you'll look into; this one you won't. And yet today…

These works are being published, and in plain, simple language, both in Athens and in Thessaloniki. But who has the Patrology at home? Who buys it? It is easy now to listen, and to learn, and to have these things explained — things people imagine I am making up out of my own head. "We have never heard these things," you say. You have never read them. There was no need for me to be the one to tell you; you could have read them yourself, and these books could be sitting in the house. Think how many other things we do have. How many encyclopedias do we have in our homes — one, two, three, four, five, six, ten of them, and each one says more or less what the next one says. Do we have anything on the faith? Well, we pick up a church paper — Zoi, or Saint Marina, or O Sotir — and so we have become theologians and learned our faith! They are good, they are holy things too, and it is good that they exist.

But this is the one thing that must not be missing from anyone's house, the one thing a person must not let die in him. Because when Christ sees that you are struggling there to learn, that you are digging and digging away at it, He will reveal this thing to you — as long as you have humility, and ask those who are near you. Did Christ not send Philip to the eunuch, the eunuch of Candace? He was a minister of finance, as we would say, an upright man, and he was reading Isaiah in the Hebrew tongue, and Christ sent Philip to him. Christ, who saw that this man would be joined to Him and would go down and preach in Ethiopia, said to him: go up to him. So Philip goes — and how does he strike up a conversation? He heard him; he was reading Isaiah. So from below he says to him: "Do you understand what you are reading?" What could the man have said — the way we would say it: "Oh, we learned all that at school,

I have finished with school"? Instead he says: "How can I, unless someone guides me?" So Philip climbs up beside him and begins to explain Isaiah to him. About whom is the prophet saying this, the man asks — about himself, or about someone else? And in a short stretch of road Philip had him ready. And there was the water. "Stop here," he says — and the place is still there, the water, right on the road we travel today. We will stop here for now, and I want us to continue in another talk. God helping us.

ταπεινωθεί και να ρωτήσει, να ταπεινωθεί και να διαβάσει τους Αγίους Πατέρας, τους Θεοφόρους Πατέρας, δεν είναι δυνατόν να την καταλάβει ούτε αυτή τη Γραφή. Μπορείς να εννοήσεις πράγματα για τα οποία δεν εκουράσεις, δεν προσευχήθηκες ή δεν βοηθήθηκες, μόνο που ο Θεσσαλισμός λέει ότι καταλαβαίνει το Ευαγγέλιο. Αλλά είναι ο μόνος ο οποίος δεν το καταλαβαίνει το Ευαγγέλιο. Γιατί αν το καταλάβαινε το Ευαγγέλιο θα ήταν αφενός Ορθόδοξος, αφετέρου θα ήταν μια αίρεση, δεν θα ήταν 350 παραφυάδες. Γιατί το ένα πνεύμα που οδηγεί, οδηγεί ασφαλώς, εφόσον εμφορούνται από πνεύμα Άγιων, σε μια ερμηνεία. Πόσο ένας ερμηνεύει έτσι, ο άλλος ερμηνεύει έτσι, όχι δεν νομίζω είναι έτσι και έτσι και έτσι, 350 κομμάτια. Ποιος έχει το πνεύμα του Άγιου και ποια είναι η αλήθεια;
