Summary

Simeon’s prophecy that Christ would be a sign spoken against explains why both faith and opposition follow Him and His disciples. The world’s second weapon is active persecution, ranging from deprivation of liberty and social goods to torture and martyrdom under hostile authorities. Such persecution arises from demonic envy and human wickedness, yet Christ promises a great heavenly reward to those who endure it faithfully.

My friends, from the time the Lord came to earth, the world was divided into two camps: those who believed and became His disciples, and those who denied that He is God and took a hostile stand against Him. This whole situation is vividly portrayed in the prophecy of Simeon the God-Receiver, whose feast we celebrated yesterday, February 3. He received the infant Jesus into his arms and called Him “a sign that will be spoken against.” Here, “sign” can mean a miracle, or even a point of reference.

Here it is better understood as a miracle: a sign spoken against, a miracle toward which people will take opposing positions. In other words, He will provoke both faith and contradiction—both belief and unbelief. It is therefore entirely natural, perfectly natural, that those who have believed in Jesus Christ should also become signs spoken against throughout history. Pay close attention to this; we must become fully conscious of it. Christ put it this way:

“They persecuted Me, and they will persecute you.” In other words, if they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well. “If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.” That is, if they followed My teaching, then they will also follow your teaching, which will speak about Me. “But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake.” The whole matter—whether people accept or reject—is bound up with My name, with the sign that is spoken against. We must know this. We must know it because otherwise we shall undergo a crisis in our lives, and often that crisis may lead us down the wrong path. Thus, if the eighth Beatitude, which we discussed last time, blesses those who are persecuted because they remain steadfast in holiness,

the ninth Beatitude, which we shall consider this evening, blesses those who are persecuted and mocked because they confess the divine-human person of Jesus Christ, the God-Man. And now I shall give you the ninth and final Beatitude: “Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you”—when they mock you and drive you away—“and say every evil word against you falsely,” when they brand you with slanderous labels, lying, of course, “for My sake.” The whole matter is because of My name. “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” They treated the prophets before you in the same way—that is, the prophets of the Old Testament. Here, then, we have an outward confession, both in words and in deeds. A person’s very way of life can provoke others, and his words can provoke them as well. It is just as I read to you last time, when the ungodly say: “He is grievous to us even to behold.” The mere sight of him is burdensome, because his presence rebukes those around him. And certainly, the best confession of Christ is to live a spiritual life. But to those who feel condemned by it, we become a stumbling block.

How often, indeed, people use the word “scandal” or “stumbling block”! Let me give an example that comes readily to mind: a memorial meal. It is Great Lent, and suppose we serve meat. You know the worldly attitude: if we do not serve meat on a Sunday during Great Lent, people think we are stingy—that we invited our relatives but did not wish to show them proper hospitality, and many other things of that sort. And so, if you please, we serve meat. Yet the relatives were invited to pray to God for the soul of the departed; and listen to this—by acting in precisely this way, they provoke Him to anger.

If we say that the proper fasting food should be served...

If it has been served, that should present no problem. Yet those around us will say that we are scandalizing them. But how, gentlemen, are we scandalizing you? How, I ask? How? As you understand, the world is a strange thing. And when we say “the World”—with a capital W, if you like, and in quotation marks—it consists, and here lies our great tragedy, of baptized Christians. If only it did not consist of baptized Christians, then we could say: these are the baptized and those are the unbaptized. But today, the place of the world in the spiritual sense has been taken over by baptized people. It is tragic, beloved. This, then, is what the ninth Beatitude tells us.

Our confession is made both through deeds and through words. And how does the world oppose those who confess the Lord? The world uses three methods, and the Lord has already set them before us in His ninth Beatitude. The first is reviling. What did He say here?

It is psychologically calculated, malicious, and effective. Someone throws a sarcastic remark or a degrading label at you, and it touches the most sensitive chords of a person’s sense of honor. But if you will, let us notice something else—and let us notice it from the very outset:

it touches the most sensitive chords of our pride. But if pride is present within us—that is, if we have not purified our hearts—then we shall certainly fail to carry through our confession of Christ. Somewhere along the way, we shall fall. I repeat: if we have not purified our hearts, if we lack that essential foundation of humility and freedom from pride, then as soon as someone mocks or taunts us, we throw everything away. Pay close attention to this in primary school, in middle school, in high school, at the university, and, for the boys, in the army. Yes, as soon as someone throws a remark at you, you immediately abandon your confession of Christ so that you will not appear inferior to the others, because you are afraid of what the other person is saying about you. You abandon the ninth Beatitude because the reviling and mockery have already struck you, taken hold of you, and overcome you. That is why I shall return to this point.

As I was saying, this is a carefully calculated, malicious, and effective weapon used by worldly people. We must therefore take care not to set out to appear as confessors of Christ without at least some elementary purification of our souls and hearts. The other person throws a humiliating word at you, a mocking epithet, a nickname, an insult, a taunt, or some derisive remark that often stings you deeply,

offending the very center of your personality or your manhood.

Let us therefore be watchful. As I told you, this requires humility and strength of soul. And why must you endure all this? Simply because you are a Christian. There is no other reason. On the Palatine Hill in Rome, an engraving was found scratched into a surface—I have seen a photograph of it—a crude caricature showing a crucified donkey, a donkey upon a cross. Beneath it is the inscription: “Alexamenos worships his God.” It evidently came from soldiers stationed on the Palatine who wanted to mock a Christian comrade. They portrayed Jesus Christ as a donkey upon the cross, saying that Alexamenos, their Christian comrade, worships God, and that this God is nothing but a donkey. Just think of it. Yet in daily life we also encounter countless such cases, even within our own homes. Did not the Lord say concerning the home, “A man’s enemies will be those of his own household”? A man’s own family members become his enemies. This happens at work, at school, at the university, in the army—in life generally. You see, then, that this is a very, very important matter. You speak about Christ with courage.

Others consider you a fanatic, a religious zealot, someone out of step with the times, a rusty old person with outdated ideas. You speak about the way of life taught by the Gospel. There are two things, you know: what we call Orthodoxy and orthopraxy—right faith and right conduct. There is the Christian faith, and there is the Gospel way of life: the way in which you are to live. And when you speak about this Gospel way of life, whether you are a boy or a girl, people consider you abnormal. This happened a good many years ago. Since evil keeps going from bad to worse, you can imagine what may be happening now. A mother once told me about her daughter—this was many years ago:

“You spend all your time with boys at high school? My child, why don’t you spend time with girls?” “So that they can call me abnormal?” Needless to say, that girl later married and had children. In the end, however, the marriage has come to nothing. She is now on the verge of separating and is living a very unhappy life because she never embraced the spiritual life. It is as simple as that. Her husband, on the other hand, seems to have wanted them to live a spiritual life. Do you see? Thus people say that you are not normal. And you understand what they are insinuating by this, whether about a girl or about a boy. The second method used by those who wish to attack a Christian,

after reviling, is something more forceful: persecution. When conditions have become more extreme, especially in an atheistic state, they deprive people of their freedom. They employ their instruments of oppression to abuse them. They deprive a person of social goods and rights. In more extreme situations there also arises a particular rank among the martyrs, known as confessors. We speak of a confessor and of a martyr. What is the difference? A confessor may even reach the point of death, but the term chiefly applies when the persecutors belong to the household of faith but have altered and corrupted the faith—that is, when they are heretics. If, for example, you suffered at the hands of the Arians, you were considered a confessor. Athanasius the Great was not a martyr at the hands of pagans, but he was a confessor because of his sufferings at the hands of heretics. In reality, however, there is not a great difference between the two, because the martyr slain by pagans also confesses Christ. And so we have...

an immense and mighty cloud of martyrs from the time Christ appeared upon the earth; and all of them confessed Christ both in word and in deed. It is estimated that in the first three centuries alone there were around eleven million martyrs, and that in the centuries that followed there were as many as forty million. God alone knows how many more will be added before the end of history, especially in the days of the Antichrist. Saint Cyril of Jerusalem says that martyrdom in those days will be far greater, both in extent and in intensity, than it was during the first centuries. It will be a kind of martyrdom beyond the human mind’s ability to conceive, especially when you consider that today torture is carried out scientifically—scientifically. That one word says a great deal. They alter your personality. There is no worse torture than having your personality changed. For example, they give you an injection of insulin—I mention this as a matter of history, because these things have happened. They have happened under such regimes. They give you a massive dose of insulin and place you in a psychiatric hospital. Naturally, they tell you that you are ill. “But I am not ill.” Then they administer the insulin, and you lose your personality. You may begin saying things that you would never believe and would never say under normal circumstances.

I could give you examples; we have very many. Many fairly recent books on the subject are in circulation. Read them, and what you discover will terrify you. In any case, the point is that in our age—an age of decay, profoundly decayed in every sphere—people cannot accept Christianity. They may be called Freemasons, atheists, materialists in general, or whatever else you please. The point is that persecution continues today and, as I explained earlier, it is also being carried out scientifically. And there is a third method: the use of extremely malicious labels. Let us pay attention to this.

Those who oppose the faithful proceed by using very malicious and slanderous accusations. We said “slanderous.” What does slander mean? It means a false accusation. “Yes, I saw Father Athanasios. He went there and did such-and-such; I saw him with my own eyes.” That is slander. It is slander when there is not the slightest basis for the accusation. It differs from a simple accusation. An accusation may mean that I comment on some evil thing another person has actually done. But when no such act exists and I fabricate it, that is called slander. Slander is a dreadful thing. That is why the Psalmist says: “Lord, guard me from slander, and I shall keep Your law.”

It is, we might say, a kind of...

as a kind of counterbalance, as an expression of my gratitude to You: I will keep Your law, but preserve me from those who engage in slander. Slander is a truly dreadful thing. Thus, when the Lord says that they will speak against you—how does He put it?—“and say every evil word against you,” He adds, “falsely.” That is slander: saying evil things, evil words, but saying them falsely. It is slander through and through. Besides the physical torments a person may suffer, there are also torments of the soul, such as slander. Think how many people have departed this world burdened by the gravest slanders. Yes, and those slanders have remained in history. There is also defamation, when people destroy your good name.

And sadly, this particularly malicious method is sometimes employed even by people who may be regarded as spiritual. How spiritual can such a person be? I assure you, I am astonished. He tells you something about someone else. Because he has spoken quietly and left his description incomplete, you say, “I did not understand what you meant. I did not understand.” Then the other person—you have seen this many times—says, “No, you do understand,” and leaves insinuations hanging over the person he wishes to slander. It is tragic; it is dreadful. Such people are called whisperers and slanderers. Do you know what they need? Now, let this part not be recorded on the tape; let it not be recorded. They need a thrashing on the spot, a sound beating. Dreadful people—truly dreadful.

The Evangelist Luke expresses the same thing in the sixth chapter as follows: “They shall cast out your name as evil.” They will give you an evil name. In other words, the swine—the pigs, as we were saying—will accuse the saints of being unclean. Though they themselves are corrupt, they will accuse pure people of being immoral, depraved, improper, and abnormal, as we said earlier. It is well known that the early Christians were slanderously accused—and the accusation has remained in history—of holding Thyestean banquets and engaging in Oedipal unions. Thyestean—with theta and upsilon—banquets and Oedipal unions. What do these expressions mean?

Unions. That is, they claimed that the Christians slaughtered a little child and drank its blood, thereby defaming the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, and afterward committed sins among themselves with their own relatives: a mother with her son, a father with his daughter. These are the so-called Oedipal unions. Forgive me; I had thought not to mention it. What have corrupt people—these instruments of the devil—not said, and what will they not always say, against these saints of God? Athanasius the Great, for example, was thoroughly slandered as a criminal. I do not have time to tell you the whole story: they accused him of cutting off the hand of a certain monk named Arsenius, and so forth. They even defamed him as immoral.

Immoral—do you hear that? At a synod they presented a woman who raged and claimed, “Yes, yes, Athanasius was my lover; he was my lover.” But it was proved that she did not even know Athanasius the Great by sight. Something similar happened to Saint Gregory the Theologian when he was in Alexandria. They called him a fornicator. Some people who envied him put a woman up to saying, “Give me my money”—meaning what you owe me for... “What do I know about this?” Saint Gregory said. “Come now, as though someone did not know me.” Do you hear? What can you even ask or say when their purpose is simply to disgrace him? And this wretched woman—this corrupt, immoral prostitute—kept shouting and creating a disturbance.

Saint Gregory the Theologian said to one of his friends, “Please, pay her so that I may have some peace.” But you know what “pay her” meant: it meant that he appeared to accept the very thing of which she was falsely accusing him. Yet as soon as she received the money, by divine providence, she walked two or three meters away and fell to the ground. She foamed at the mouth, became possessed by a demon, and cried out, “No, no, Gregory is innocent.” You see it very clearly. Or consider Saint Nektarios of Aegina, our contemporary, leaping across all those centuries. Do you know why he came to Greece? He belonged to the jurisdiction of Alexandria. They said that Saint Nektarios of Aegina was immoral—that he was immoral. There were also terrible slanders against Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite, and even recently there has been a campaign against him—quite recently.

I will not name the man who thoroughly slandered him, one of the so-called Neo-Orthodox, because Saint Nikodemos supported the audible proclamation of the prayers during the Divine Liturgy and also, as he said, agreed with frequent Holy Communion. He had anonymously written the book Concerning Frequent Receiving of the Holy Gifts. They would have flayed him alive. They even altered some of his positions in the Rudder in order to make him appear to be a heretic. Worse still, they made a book of his disappear, a commentary on Saint Gregory Palamas, because books in those days were printed in Europe. They caused that book to vanish, and Saint Nikodemos said that they had destroyed his finest work. What more do you need? As you understand,

the cause of all these things is the envy of the devil, together with the envy and malice of wicked people, even if those people have been baptized but do not possess the Spirit of God. Here is one short passage. Consider Epictetus, whom we mentioned last time while answering questions about the value of ancient Greek studies. He was a philosopher, a Neo-Stoic philosopher, who lived from about AD 50 to 120 and came from Hierapolis in Phrygia. I found a very striking passage. But since our time is over, God willing, we shall examine it next time. For if you wish to become a philosopher, you must endure the same treatment—how much more if you wish to be a Christian!

You may regard this as merely coincidental. I was talking with Father Polykarpos, opened a book, and found it—a wonderful passage for our subject. And there is one more matter: the rewards of those who endure. God willing, we shall speak about these things next Sunday.

Η ομολογία μας είναι και με έργα και με λόγια. Και πώς αντιτίθεται ο κόσμος στους ομολογούντας τον Κύριον; Ο κόσμος χρησιμοποιεί τρεις τρόπους. Και μας τους εξέθεσε ήδη ο Κύριος στον ένατο μακαρισμό του. Ο πρώτος τρόπος είναι ο ονειδισμός. Τι είπε εδώ;

Ο Ευαγγελιστής Λουκάς, την ίδια θέση, στο έκτο κεφάλαιο, μας τη λέει ως εξής: «Ἐκβάλωσι τὸ ὄνομα ὑμῶν ὡς πονηρόν». Θα βγάλουν το όνομά σας πονηρόν. Δηλαδή οι χοίροι, λέγαμε τα γουρούνια, θα κατηγορήσουν τους Αγίους ως ακαθάρτους. Ενώ θα είναι σάπιοι, θα κατηγορήσουν τους αγνούς ανθρώπους ως ανηθίκους και διεφθαρμένους και μη σωστούς, μη νορμάλ, αυτό που λέγαμε προηγουμένως. Είναι γνωστό ότι τους αρχαίους χριστιανούς τους συκοφαντούσαν ότι ετέλουν —έμεινε στην ιστορία— Θυέστεια δείπνα και Οιδιποδείους μίξεις. Θυέστεια, το θήτα με ύψιλον, Θυέστεια δείπνα και Οιδιποδείους μίξεις. Αυτά τι σημαίνουν;
