Summary

The eighth Beatitude promises the Kingdom of Heaven to those who remain faithful to holiness when persecuted. Abel, Joseph, Elijah, Susanna, the Maccabean martyrs, Christ, Stephen, Paul, and later Christians exemplify suffering endured for righteousness. Believers are therefore called to courage, steadfast faith, and open confession so that they may share in the promise of the eighth Beatitude.

We continue, children, with our subject of the Beatitudes. We have reached the eighth Beatitude: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” We might suppose that those who put the previous seven Beatitudes into practice would be happy: God would bless them, and people would honor them in a special way. Their lives would be a beautiful, living example, and others would point to them as worthy of imitation. This, of course, is how we might expect people who have practiced the seven Beatitudes thus far to be regarded. Unfortunately, however, things are not like that. Instead, we encounter something most strange and, at first sight, inexplicable. As soon as a person begins to live a spiritual life, entering fully into the realm and spirit of the Beatitudes, an unrelenting war begins: war from the devil and war from other people—from those who belong to his portion, to use a phrase from the Wisdom of Solomon.

These are the people who belong to the devil and act as his instruments. This brings us immediately to the question of why this war breaks out against spiritual people, when we would expect them to be models of life within our society and our community. Why does this happen? That is the question, my dear friends, that we shall try to examine this evening. What is certain, however, is that the Lord calls blessed those who have suffered persecution and continue to be persecuted,

and He promises them the Kingdom that properly belongs to them. This is how He says it: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Pay attention: He does not say those persecuted for their political beliefs, or for any other such reason, but those persecuted for righteousness’ sake. What, then, does righteousness mean here, for the sake of which they will be persecuted? As we saw in the fourth Beatitude, righteousness in the broad sense of the word means holiness. It is not used merely in the narrow sense of defending some just cause. It includes that meaning, of course, both narrowly and broadly, but here it refers above all to the broader meaning: holiness.

Likewise, in the Old Testament, the word “righteous” means the holy person, the one who lives and conducts his life according to the law of God. In the fourth Beatitude, the Lord calls blessed those who hunger and thirst for spiritual perfection. What does He call blessed here? Steadfastness in this way of life—that is, steadfastness in holiness. Pay close attention: it is not simply a matter of being holy, but of remaining steadfast in holiness even when persecution is brought against me. Here, then, He does not call blessed, as He does

in the fourth Beatitude, merely those who possess righteousness—that is, holiness—but those who remain steadfast in preserving the character of a holy person. For, you know, it is not as great a thing to repent and confess your sins as it is to remain steadfast in the resolve with which you began.

That is the great thing. I have seen many examples of this, even among you children, if you wish. God has counted me worthy to serve for many years. Let me tell you: I have been a catechist for about fifty years. Fifty years, yes. I began when I was eighteen or nineteen. How many children received the Word of God? How many remained steadfast? Very few. Of course, what they received may sprout one day. Suppose we have wheat stored away in a sack. Will it sprout simply because it is in the storehouse? It must fall into the earth. So it is here as well. Though these children may not remain steadfast now, something may happen to them one day and they may return. Naturally, I may never know about it, but that does not matter. We have simply been commanded to sow. What happens afterward is entrusted to the grace of God. So we do see such situations. Fortunately, we do.

Our labor has not been in vain. Yet there are also people who, after experiencing some persecution or hardship in their lives, never return to this path. It is a pity. We could therefore say that many begin, but few finish. Listen carefully to what I am saying, and let each person ask himself: Could it be that I too begin but do not finish? Let me remind you of Christ’s Parable of the Tower Builder. A man began to build a tower, but he did not first sit down to calculate the cost. Here “calculate” means to reckon what this tower would cost him.

He began building, but the work was not completed. We might say that it was left without a roof. Then those who passed by and saw the unfinished building mocked the man who had begun without reckoning the cost. Children, my dear friends, building up our own selves comes at a cost.

Righteousness—with a capital R, in its broad sense—comes at a cost. In other words, holiness comes at a cost: not only putting it into practice, but preserving it until your final breath. Yes, it costs something. So calculate the cost. What will it cost you? Have you asked yourself whether you will be able to carry it through to the end?

The point is to remain steadfast and courageous along the path of the spiritual life, despite the difficulties and obstacles that will confront us. That is the great contest—not merely to begin for a little while. How will I finish? We do not know how it will end. This matter of steadfastness reminds us of the kind of hearers described by the Lord in the Parable of the Sower. For a time they begin with enthusiasm for the Word of God, but the seed falls upon rock. It sprouts, yet because there is no moisture, no refreshing water beneath it around the root, it does not reach maturity. They begin, but they do not finish. The Word of God begins to bear fruit in the heart, but as soon as persecution appears—this is what Christ says there—they reject Christ, draw close to the world, and compromise with it. It is a tragedy, a tragedy. Let me tell you: I may have had a child as a pupil in catechism school who, after growing up, joined Freemasonry simply because his personal interests were served there. I cannot forget it; it pains me. That is why I tell you truthfully...

Throughout all these fifty years, I spoke about Freemasonry so that, if the children ever encountered some difficulty in life, they would at least know what Freemasonry was. There are other dangers too, but this is one of them. For this reason, the Apostle Paul writes in his Epistle to the Hebrews that the Christians of Jerusalem had once been steadfast in holiness, but had now grown lax. We must always fear such spiritual slackening. The moment we notice it, we should say: What am I doing? Where am I going? What am I doing? He writes, “But recall the former days”—remember them again.

Remember that earlier time, those former days, “when, after you were illumined, you endured a great struggle with sufferings.” Once you had received illumination, you steadfastly endured every suffering your opponents could inflict upon you. “Sometimes you were publicly exposed to reproaches and tribulations”: on the one hand, you were subjected to insults and tribulations, and your opponents even brought you out before society to make a public spectacle of you. “And sometimes you became companions of those who were treated in this way.” You shared in the sufferings of those who endured the same things elsewhere. In other words, you yourselves accepted persecution, and you also became companions

of those who suffered in the same way. You did not fail to share in sufferings like your own. Moreover, “you accepted with joy the plundering of your possessions.” You joyfully accepted even the seizure of your property. “Therefore, do not cast away your boldness,” your confidence, “which has a great reward.”

A very great gain. It seems that they had begun to show signs of weakening, and that is why the Apostle Paul writes these things to them. “But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him,” says God. I am omitting a few words for the sake of brevity. God says, “If anyone draws back.” The Greek verb here is used for lowering a flag. To lower the flag means to bring it down.

At a ceremony, as you know, the raising of the flag means lifting it up the flagpole. To lower the flag means to bring it down. “If anyone draws back”—if this lowering takes place—“My soul has no pleasure in him,” says God. In other words: My soul is not pleased; this lowering of the flag is not acceptable to Me. “But we,” Paul says, “are not among those who draw back and perish, but among those who have faith and preserve their souls.” This drawing back, then, is a very grave thing, a very grave thing. We must understand that this desertion from the ranks of Christ, this lowering of the flag of faith and the spiritual life,

when it happens because of cowardice—for cowardice lies at its root—is punished by God. He says, “But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” That is clear. And in the Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation, Christ bears witness and says, “But as for the cowardly, their portion, their place, shall be in the lake burning with fire and brimstone.” The lake burning with fire and brimstone is Hell. “This is the second death.” We must pay attention to the problem of cowardice. From this very moment, we must train ourselves to cast it off in every area of our lives, first and foremost in the spiritual life. We must not be concerned that others may mock us. You know that many young people cast aside their spiritual life and their purity—as we shall see in a moment—simply so that others will not mock them: fellow pupils, comrades in the army, or university classmates. Yes, they cast all these things aside merely to escape ridicule. But if you have strength of character and can stand firm, will you be afraid? Will you be frightened and fail to take a forceful stand? What would you do—take a passive stance? Would you bow your head, draw inward, and shrink back? What would you do? No. You would go on the offensive. You would show them that they are mocking something of true worth, while what deserves to be mocked is the life they themselves are living.

In any case, let us pay close attention to this. It applies in our social life, in our home with our parents, in the army, in our profession—everywhere, everywhere. When someone urges us to do something filthy or dishonest, or anything else of that kind, we must say no. “But they will mock you.” Let them mock. Let them say whatever they wish. Children, put this to the test. Remain steadfast in the moral life of the Gospel, and you will be vindicated completely, because God will give you strength. At some point He will show you—not in the world to come,

but in this present life—that you chose the good path, that you were not mistaken. Those who insulted and mocked you will acknowledge it. As Christ says in one of His seven letters to the Churches of Asia Minor, speaking also about the Jews: “I will bring them before you”—to put it simply—“to bow down before you.” Yes, yes. One day they will come and tell you, “You were right.” The former classmate who mocked you, the former colleague who mocked you—whoever it may be—will come and say, “You were right. The path you chose was good. We were led astray.”

In any case, the history of the persecution of the saints and the virtuous is a long one. What is striking is that this history begins at the very dawn of the human race upon the earth. It begins with the murder of the righteous by his own brother—the murder of the virtuous, holy Abel, who lived in God.

Pure. There is a way for others to steal what you possess simply to make you like everyone else. When they rob you of your purity, that too is persecution. It is persecution, only by a different path. Persecution does not consist merely in someone chasing after you. If they take away your purity,

This is another form of persecution: the pressure not to be different from what everyone else is doing. That is the mentality: “What are the others doing? You must do the same.” Do you have the strength to stand firm here and say no? Even if you do not have the strength to confess your faith openly, at least you have the strength to remain steadfast. I would say there are two things required: to remain steadfast and to confess it openly. As I explained earlier, this is the firm, active stand we must take against those who try to rob us of what is good. Let us also remember the well-known story of Joseph. It is repeated continually—every day, I assure you. Do you know what Joseph, Joseph the All-Comely, said when he was pressured to surrender his purity?

Holy Scripture tells us that he was a handsome young man, only twenty years old. I emphasize that he was handsome because such young people often become targets of sin. Holy Scripture says that he was exceedingly handsome—very handsome in appearance. Yet he did not give in. What did he say to his corrupt mistress? “How then can I do this wicked thing and sin against God?” How could I do such an evil thing? God sees me; I stand before God. And Joseph was persecuted. He paid for his refusal with a whole decade in prison. Was that not persecution?

Let us remember the Prophet Elijah, who was so fiercely persecuted by that dreadful queen, Jezebel. The pure Susanna, whose story is found in the Book of Daniel, chose death rather than adultery when the two wicked priests—elderly men and judges of the people—tried to coerce her. Let us also remember that Maccabean mother, Solomone, together with Eleazar, the teacher of her seven children, her seven sons. They said no, choosing not to betray the Law of God. They were all martyrs. This may have been the first collective martyrdom in the Old Testament. It may indeed have been the first, for the Church celebrates their feast.

Jesus is persecuted and crucified because He is regarded as an opponent of the ruling order of that time. Then come the disciples, the Protomartyr Stephen, Paul, the cloud of martyrs, and the Christians of every century and every age who, because of their virtue, integrity, and honesty, are subjected to pressure and deprived of what is rightfully theirs.

And this happens precisely because they are Christians. Think of an employee today who is pressured to lie or steal, or a child whose parents prevent him from attending Church and practicing his faith because, they claim, he will become a monk. Holy Scripture says, “A man’s enemies will be those of his own household.” Just think of it. But why are the devout persecuted? Quite simply, because they do not conform to the world. In His high-priestly prayer, the Lord says: “I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” They are not of this world; they do not fit in with the world.

You might ask, what does it matter if they do not conform to the world? They are not harming anyone. Are there not completely different ideas among people which can be expressed without anyone rising up to oppose them? A person says, “Am I not free? I am expressing my opinion. Why should I not express it?” Yet the very presence of a Christian in the world is revolutionary and disturbing to the world. This is the important point. Through his exemplary life, the Christian becomes a silent rebuke to evil deeds. He shines a light that exposes the corrupt way of life of others.

For them, the virtuous person must not exist; he must disappear. They seek by every possible means to make him disappear, as though they were trying to make their own conscience disappear. This is why Holy Scripture describes the schemes of these wicked people so masterfully. Allow me to quote only briefly; there is much more, but I have made just a small selection. “Let us lie in wait for the righteous man.” Let us set a trap for him—like the other form of persecution I mentioned earlier: “Come and see what a wonderful time we will have together tonight; we have all done it too.” This is the other path: they want to make you stumble so that they can say, “So he is no different from us after all; he is just like us.” Indeed, that is precisely what the passage says further on.

“He opposes our deeds and reproaches us for sins against the Law; he accuses us of sins against our upbringing. He has become a rebuke to our very thoughts. The mere sight of him is burdensome to us.” Merely seeing him weighs upon them and troubles them, “because he is unlike the others.” Do you see? He is unlike the others; he does not resemble them. This is the envy of the devil and of the devil’s instruments, wicked people. “His life is unlike that of others, and his ways are strange. He boasts that God is his Father.” They call it arrogance for him to say that God is his Father—as though that were arrogance! And what is his reward, my dear friends? His reward is the Kingdom of God. The Wisdom of Solomon gives a beautiful answer.

The passage I quoted before is in the second chapter. What I shall now tell you is in the fifth chapter of the same book. “Then the righteous man will stand”—where? There, on the day of judgment—“with great boldness before those who afflicted him and those who made light of his labors.” He will stand face-to-face with those who afflicted him. This is what the Evangelist Matthew tells us will happen at the Last Judgment. “When they see him, they will be shaken with dreadful fear and will be amazed at the wonder of his salvation.” They will be seized by terrible fear and astonished at his unexpected salvation. And they will say, “Is this the man whom we once held in ridicule and made a byword of reproach? We were fools.”

Is this not the man we mocked and laughed at? Is it not he? “We were fools”—what happened to us? “We strayed from the way of truth,” from what is real. My dear friends, I say once again: the world will persecute us, but we must remain steadfast both in our faith and in our way of life. Steadfast. This is what the Apostle writes to the Corinthians: “Be courageous; be strong. Stand firm in the faith.” Stand firmly rooted, because this is the will of God, so that you may share in the promise of the Eighth Beatitude: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Δικαιοσύνη, με δέλτα κεφαλαίον, ευρεία έννοια, κοστίζει. Δηλαδή η αγιότητα κοστίζει. Όχι μόνο πώς θα την εφαρμόσεις, αλλά και πώς θα την συντηρήσεις μέχρι την τελευταία σου πνοή. Κοστίζει, ναι. Εντάξει λοιπόν, να ψηφίσεις την δαπάνη. Τι θα σου κοστίσει; Ρώτησες τον εαυτό σου αν θα τα φέρεις εις πέρας;

Κρίτη φαρά ο άλλος δρόμος διόγμου. Μόνο και μόνο να μην διαφέρεις από εκείνο που κάνουν οι άλλοι, αυτή είναι η ψυχολογία. Τι κάνουν οι άλλοι; Το ίδιο να κάνεις κι εσύ. Έχεις τη δύναμη εδώ να μείνεις σταθερός και να πεις όχι. Και αν δεν έχεις τη δύναμη να το ομολογήσεις, τουλάχιστον έχεις τη δύναμη να μείνεις σταθερός. Εγώ θα έλεγα είναι δύο οι τομείς: και να μείνεις σταθερός και να το ομολογείς. Είναι, όπως σας εξήγησα προηγουμένως, η δυναμική στάση που πρέπει να πάρουμε απέναντι εκείνων που προσπαθούν να μας αφαιρέσουν το καλό. Ας θυμηθούμε ακόμη εκείνη τη χαρακτηριστική ιστορία του Ιωσήφ. Επαναλαμβάνεται διαρκώς, παρακαλώ, καθημερινά. Ξέρετε τι είπε ο Ιωσήφ, ο Πάγκαλος Ιωσήφ, όταν πιέζεται να χάσει την αγνότητά του;

κλειδίτα, Λέει η Γραφή, το λέγω εγώ, ομορφόπαιδο, νέος, είκοσι χρονών παιδί και ομορφόπαιδο. Το τονίζω αυτό, το ομορφόπαιδο, γιατί πολλές φορές τα παιδιά αυτά γίνονται στόχος της αμαρτίας. Πάνυ, το λέει η Γραφή, πάνυ, άλφα νι ύψιλον, πάνυ καλός, δηλαδή πάρα πολύ καλός, θα πει ωραίος, πάρα πολύ ωραίος τη όψει. Ήταν ομορφόπαιδο και όμως δεν ενέδωσε. Τι είπε στη διεφθαρμένη κυρά του; «Και πώς ποιήσω το ρήμα το πονηρόν τούτο και αμαρτήσομαι εναντίον του Θεού;» Πώς θα κάνω εγώ αυτό το πράγμα, το πονηρό; Με βλέπει ο Θεός, απέναντι στον Θεό βρίσκομαι. Και διώχθη ο Ιωσήφ. Αυτό το πλήρωσε μια ολόκληρη δεκαετία στη φυλακή. Διωγμός, δεν είναι;
