Summary
The calm bird amid a violent sea illustrates the Christian whose soul remains peaceful because God is the source of its peace. Christ restores the friendship with God lost through Adam and Eve’s sinful autonomy, while repentance and Confession reconcile sinners to God. Those who receive Christ’s peace and actively reconcile others are called children of God, heirs of God, and co-heirs with Christ.

My friends, in a museum there is a painting, an oil painting depicting a storm at sea. Savage waves and black clouds fill the scene, while brilliant flashes of lightning streak across the sky. The wreckage of a ship floats amid the sea foam, and here and there a hand can be seen rising from the water, desperately pleading for help. Out of the surface of the sea rises a rock against which the waves are breaking. In a hollow of the rock there is a little patch of greenery.
Among that greenery, a wild dove calmly and serenely watches the storm. This image reveals the peace that reigns in the soul of the Christian, who remains calm, serene, and peaceful amid the storms of life. For God is his peace. This is why the seventh Beatitude says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Blessed, it says, are those who possess peace and bring about peace.
Blessed are those who bring about peace; they, it says, shall be called children of God. And indeed, peace is the most precious good, one that only the Christian can acquire, as we shall see as our subject unfolds. The world, in essence, has no peace. The world has anxious concern, troubled care, and anguish. The Beatitude of the peacemakers is the fruit of the Beatitude of those who are pure in heart. In other words, this Beatitude follows from the one before it.
It says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” This is why the Apostle Paul observes, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” Pursue peace with everyone, as far as this is possible, but pursue holiness as well; for without holiness—and, of course, peace together with it—no one can see the person of God. “No one will see the Lord.” Here the Apostle Paul presents us with two things necessary for seeing the person of God: holiness and peace.
For, as I was saying, I sometimes use words that may not be very familiar to you, but I choose them because the person of God is the supreme object of desire. The word refers to longing or aspiration, and this is its highest point—the ultimate longing of the human heart, we might say. What am I to see? What am I to acquire? What am I to become? Everything falls short of this supreme desire: to see the person of God. For this theoria, this divine vision of the person of God, gives me the fullness of blessedness. To help you understand, when the sun sends forth a beam of rays, that beam carries many things within it.
It carries heat; it produces chemical changes and even mechanical effects, if you like, and so forth. In the same way, the theoria, the divine vision of the Prototype—God—is the bearer of blessedness, that which makes a person truly blessed. This blessedness cannot be fully understood here on earth. We understand it only in part. But how can the heart possess peace if holiness has not come first? We must cleanse ourselves of every sin, both bodily and spiritual.
Sins include acts of immorality. Pay attention to this. If there is immorality in us—if we allow ourselves to be led into bodily immorality, and I emphasize bodily immorality—then we should not expect to have peace in our souls, nor should we expect to see the person of God. It is impossible. Notice what the Apostle Paul says: “Without which”—without holiness—“no one will see the Lord.” You can have neither peace nor theoria, the divine vision of God. Nothing. Take care, because you are young. You will certainly face enticements, and within our fallen nature there is always this inclination toward evil. So be especially watchful concerning...
I insist upon bodily sins—I insist because the Word of God insists upon them, and because our own experience tells us the same. But there are also spiritual sins, foremost among them pride, envy, and hatred. All these are spiritual sins that prevent a person from having peace within the soul. But what exactly is peace? Peace is the good relationship between two persons or two groups of people, in which they seek to secure and preserve tranquility, calm, and harmony. We must all have...
the same spirit. And this, of course, must always include the dimension of love. Robbers, too, may have an agreement among themselves, but they do not possess the Spirit of God, nor do they possess love. They agree in order to do evil. No; our agreement must be...
according to Holy Scripture and in the Spirit of Christ. Peacemakers are those who restore this lost peace between two opposing groups or two persons in conflict. The one who brings peace, who reconciles others, is called a peacemaker. But...
to be a true peacemaker, he must himself possess peace; he must be a son of peace. This expression, “son of peace,” is something great and deeply significant. Once, the Lord told His disciples that when they went somewhere to preach the Gospel, they were to bless the house that received them and say, “Peace be to this house.” And if a son of peace was there—if the master of the house was a man who possessed peace; notice, a son of peace—then, He said, the peace they gave as a blessing would remain upon that house. But if no son of peace was there...
if there was no person there who loved peace, then the peace would return to those who had bestowed it; it would come back to them. Do you see, then, what it means to be a son of peace? Peace appears in three areas. Listen. The first is peace between God and man: there must be this peace between man and God. Next comes peace among the powers within the human person. We shall examine this a little later. And finally, there is one person’s peace with another. We therefore have three areas, and let us begin with the peace of man...
with God. Of course, God always desires to be at peace with man, but man does not always desire to be at peace with God. This peace between man and God is the fulfillment of the angelic hymn of the Nativity, the words, “and on earth peace.” Do you know how greatly these words have been misunderstood? Many think that “on earth peace” means the end of wars upon the earth. That is not its meaning. It means peace between man and God. For man once sought independence from God, rebelling against Him in the persons of Adam and Eve. Thus arose the greatest transgression, the greatest sin...
the autonomy of man from God—the attitude that says, “I do not need You, my God. Why should You heal me? I have medical science. Why should You give me food? I have my health, money in my pockets, and my fields.” How foolish man is when he thinks this way! Shall we give still more examples? How foolish he is! In his arrogance, man becomes senseless and sees things in this way. Therefore, “on earth peace” is the fulfillment of the angelic hymn: the reconciliation of man with God. And if every person were reconciled with God, we would automatically have peace upon earth as well. Wars, divisions, battles, and such things would clearly cease.
We must not imagine that the words “on earth peace” have failed simply because wars have continued upon the earth for two thousand years. Because this understanding is mistaken—completely mistaken and outside the Spirit of God—people who reject God, those who insist upon their autonomy, go so far as to say that Christianity has failed. It did not give us what we expected. Therefore, they say, we are leaving the Age of Pisces. We are leaving the constellation of Pisces and entering the Age of Aquarius, creating the New Age. This is what the New Age says: “Jesus Christ, in two thousand years You accomplished nothing. So now we will turn to another Christ.” Christ...
the Messiah—to another Messiah, the Antichrist. Is this not terrifying? The heart of the matter, the very heart of the Antichrist and of his acceptance, is what I am telling you now. “You did not give us what we wanted, so move aside.” Christ Himself said, “If another comes, you will receive him.” Because the Jews had understood things wrongly, they imagined that Christ had come to impose peace upon the earth in the sense they desired: political peace, national peace, economic peace, or however you wish to describe it. They did not understand it as the reconciliation of man with God through the abolition of sin upon earth. This, I repeat, is the heart and core of the coming of the Antichrist and of his acceptance.
That is the whole story. That is all there is to it. But the peace proclaimed by the Holy Angels was peace in the fullest and highest sense. When God created man, He did not abandon him. He did not leave man alone.
Man lived in the blessedness of Paradise, with God always beside him, in communion with him and in friendship with him—I emphasize, in friendship with man. This would have continued if Adam and Eve, our first-created ancestors, had preserved peace and holiness of heart. Sadly, however, that holiness soon departed.
As I told you earlier, they wanted to become autonomous. At the same moment, peace was lost as well. When Christ came again into Paradise seeking Adam, it was like a visitor going to the door of a house and receiving no answer, while the master of the house runs away and hides in the basement. God said, “Adam, where are you? Why have you hidden?” “I am naked,” he replied, “and so I am ashamed.” “Who told you that you were naked? Who came and whispered this in your ear?” You see? He had been exposed. This was not the first time that God the Word had appeared to our first-created ancestors. No.
It was not the first time. That is why I told you that this relationship already existed. Now God the Word visits man again: He becomes man and draws even closer, saying, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.” If you put into practice what I tell you, you are My friends. And this lost friendship is recovered through holiness. Why do I insist upon holiness? What did He say? “Whatever I command you”—whatever I enjoin upon you. Therefore, you must put into practice the things I tell you. This is holiness, and it brings about the restoration of friendship. This is why the Prophet Isaiah...
The Prophet Isaiah prays to the Lord and says: “O Lord our God, grant us peace, for You have given us all things.” “Lord,” he says, “give us peace, because then You will have given us everything.” The sacrifices of antiquity included hecatombs—one hundred oxen slaughtered upon a wooden grating. The person who wished to make atonement before God would stand beneath it and receive the blood of the slaughtered animals. These sacrifices were called hecatombs. Thus, the sacrifices, the hecatombs, and the worship of the peoples of the earth express nothing other than the search for and restoration of this...
...broken peace between man and God. No longing has ever lain so deeply within the human soul as the longing for peace. And what is the place of the peacemakers? What is their role? Because...
...we said here that a peacemaker must possess peace. He cannot, of course, fulfill his role as a peacemaker if he himself has no peace. So we have spoken about peace, and we have seen our relationship with God. What, then, is the role of peacemakers here? It is to reconcile people with God—to lead them back and draw them near to Him again. Pay attention: with God.
Thank you.
Why do you turn away from God? Come back; do not sin. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, we see this return and the restoration of peace portrayed for us. Today we find this in the Mystery of Repentance and Holy Confession, which is preeminently the Mystery of reconciliation with God. As one who personally hears confessions today, I have a deep—an exceedingly deep—awareness that, as people confess their sins, I stand there as a peacemaker, as one who brings reconciliation...
...between sinful people and God. For when someone repents, is he not reconciled with God? The spiritual father, then, is a peacemaker; he is a reconciler. This is profoundly important. And as I have told you, I am deeply conscious of it. Now let us consider peace with ourselves. Peace with ourselves. After the Fall in the person of Adam, man is not merely divided; I would say that he is shattered into pieces. Modern man in particular has a fragmented personality, and herein lies his tragedy. Thus, terrible conflicts arise within him—conflicts of the intellect...
I want to do something different, while unfulfilled longings still remain within me. I wanted to achieve this or that and failed, yet those desires persist—I emphasize, they persist. I insist that these unfulfilled longings must somehow be fulfilled; but in the end, take heed, I find myself in a nervous breakdown.
That is why today we have so many people who lose their sanity, suffer psychological disturbances, and experience conflicts—what we call problems—especially among our young people. For there is no peace among the three powers of the soul—the intellect, the will, and the emotions—or between the soul and the body. There is no peace. Here there is work for a peacemaker. That peacemaker may again be the spiritual father, but fundamentally, I would tell you, it is we ourselves. Take heed: we ourselves. A person must understand: why am I at war with this and that within my own self? I will draw near to the Lord and identify this conflict.
I will restore peace between the divided elements that make up my being. Yes, yes, as I told you: unfulfilled longings, the desire for pleasures—all these things. “How will this happen? How will that happen? Oh, I failed to accomplish this or that; the whole world has fallen apart!” Helen Keller used to say, “Why should I keep knocking on a closed door when another door beside it stands open?” Why must I have this or that at all costs, even reaching the point of suicide because I failed to achieve it? Why? Therefore, as Zigabenus says, you must “bring the will of your own flesh into peace...”
“...with the will of your soul, and subject the lesser to the greater.” What must you do? Bring the will of your body into peace by submitting it to the will of your soul. Subject the lesser to the greater—the body to the soul, and your whole being to God. If you do this, then you will certainly have peace. A heart that is “anxious and troubled about many things,” as the Lord says, has lost its peace. In a heart that does not trust in the providence of God, peace cannot take root. A heart that steals itself away from the grace and will of God in order to surrender to its own will is a heart that has lost its peace. When a heart has lost itself, it is utterly lost. And the Book of Proverbs says, “Woe to the heart that has lost its way.” Woe to the person who has lost his heart. We also have peace with other people. What is the root and cause of every quarrel, division, and hostility? Egoism and self-love, the root passion. Self-love is the worship of the ego—the service of the self—and it takes many forms.
It may take the form of asserting one’s own interests, or of defending one’s honor and reputation: “Ah, the other person must not offend my dignity!” At other times, it takes the form of seeking pleasure. Do you know how many people will even commit murder because their desire for pleasure is not satisfied? Thus, when a person is deprived of any of these things, he immediately begins to quarrel, becomes brutal, kills, and hates. There is hardly any need to say how far such a situation can go. Someone must intervene, and that someone is the peacemaker, who helps those who are divided. Yet to become a peacemaker, one must look to the eternal prototype, Christ. From Him he will draw peace, because, as the Apostle Paul writes to the Ephesians, “Christ is our peace.”
The Lord said: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.” I give you My own peace. “Not as the world gives do I give to you”—not worldly peace, but My own peace. And the reward of the peacemakers is this: “For they shall be called sons of God.” They will be called children of God both here on earth and in Heaven. Behold the great prize of the peacemakers: adoption as sons. They will become children of God. And do you know what it means to be a child of God? It means also to be a brother of Christ—an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ, as the Apostle Paul says. My dear friends, it is a great title of honor to be a peacemaker—a great title of honor, not in matters of worldly peace, but in matters concerning the peace of God.
By every means, we must find this peace and put it into practice as peacemakers. Let us always be as God desires us to be, and then this Beatitude will belong to us: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
