Summary

Epictetus teaches that anyone pursuing truth should expect ridicule, remain humble and steadfast, and ultimately earn respect through perseverance. Christian joy is not worldly pleasure but a fruit of union with Christ and the Holy Spirit, exemplified by Saint Charalambos and the rejoicing Apostles after their beating. The nine Beatitudes form a unified path of humility, repentance, meekness, holiness, mercy, purity, peacemaking, endurance, and faithful confession leading to Christian perfection.

Last time we spoke about the ninth Beatitude, but we did not finish it. Let me read it to you again: “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and falsely say every evil word against you for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” That is what the ninth Beatitude says. As I was telling you last time, before our time ran out, I had happened to find something by Epictetus, the Neo-Stoic philosopher. He lived after Christ, between AD 50 and 120.

He was a remarkable man. I do not have time to tell you more about him, but in one passage he writes the following. I shall recite the original text to you. I always make a habit of doing this, so that we may gain some familiarity with the ancient texts and accustom our ears to hearing them. This is very important. There is great benefit in hearing the ancient texts first and then hearing their meaning in translation. Epictetus says: “If you desire philosophy, prepare yourself from the outset to be laughed at and mocked by many, who will say, ‘All of a sudden, a philosopher has come back among us!’ and, ‘Where did he get this raised brow?’”

“Do not put on a proud air. Hold fast to those things that seem best to you, as one appointed by God to this place. And remember: if you remain steadfast, those who mocked you at first will admire you later; but if they overcome you, you will bring twice as much ridicule upon yourself.” If you want to become a philosopher, prepare yourself to hear a great deal of mockery and to be despised by many, who will say, “Where did this philosopher suddenly spring from?” and, “Where did all this pride come from?” The word “brow” here means pride.

As Basil the Great also says of a certain person, the Pope of Rome, he had “a raised brow”—an uplifted eyebrow. At that time, this was an expression describing a proud person. But you must have no pride. Simply hold fast to those principles that seem best to you, believing that this is the place in which God has set you. Consider that, if you remain steadfast in your principles, those who once mocked you will later admire you. But if they overcome you, they will ridicule you twice as much. And remember that Epictetus was a pagan, not a Christian. If these things happen to a philosopher, and if he must

remain steadfast no matter what people say to him, how much more must this be true of a Christian confessor. That is why, when I found this passage, it struck me, and I said, “I shall share it with the children, with our friends.” So now, at last, I shall continue our treatment of the ninth Beatitude.

The question is this: How are we to understand the persecution of the faithful mentioned here in the ninth Beatitude? The Lord said: “If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you.” If the world hates you, He says, know that before it hated you, it hated Me. Pay attention, because here we shall see the theological depth of persecution and rejection. “If you were of the world”—if you belonged to this world and had an affinity with it—“the world would love its own.” The world would then love what belonged to it. “But because you are not of the world”—because you do not belong to this world or share its character—“but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” That is why the world hates you. Thus, the believer remains a stranger to the world, and the world hates and persecutes him because he does not resemble it. Pay attention to this: because he does not resemble it. This is the deeper theological interpretation of persecution from its negative side. We shall also see its positive side. Persecution for the name of Christ has, as I told you, this deeper theological character.

On the positive side, persecution makes confessors participants in the sufferings of Christ. This concerns us, you know—very deeply. If we understand it, it concerns us profoundly. As the Apostle Peter says in his first epistle: “Rejoice insofar as you share in Christ’s sufferings.” See the joy here: you rejoice because you share in the sufferings of Christ. Do you know what the person who accepts persecution does? He continues the Passion of Christ upon the Cross. Although, in the eyes of unbelievers, Christ was dishonored upon the Cross, He is honored by the faithful;

but who continues the Passion of Christ upon the Cross? The believer does. The believer takes the Passion of Christ upon the Cross into himself and bears it within himself. Listen to how the Apostle Paul expresses this in a most precious passage, one that reveals—if I may put it this way—the mysticism of the Christian. Mysticism means being able to enter into the spirit of Christianity: to be initiated into it and to understand its deeper meaning. That is what mysticism means. Listen to what the Apostle Paul writes: “I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body...”

Of course, you know the account; pay attention to this mystical scene. Christ has now withdrawn. I take His place upon the Cross. That is what it means: I fill up what is lacking. I take the place of Christ. To “fill up” always means that, in place of Jesus Christ, I take His place upon the Cross. “What is lacking in the sufferings of Christ” means, in quotation marks, those sufferings that Christ did not have time to

undergo upon the Cross, “in my flesh.” Pay attention: he does not say, “in my soul”; he says, “in my flesh.” He is referring to human flesh, which the persecutors and enemies can see and which they attack when they persecute the believer, “for the sake of His body.” This is for the sake of the body of Christ, and the body of Christ is the Church: “which is the Church.” Thus, Paul’s sufferings for the Church were for the sake of the body of Christ. That is precisely why he writes this. It is exceedingly, exceedingly important. The believer needs only to become conscious of it: Why am I suffering? It does not matter whether you are in primary school, middle school, high school, a university student, a soldier—whatever you may be.

Others mock you simply because you are a believer. You can understand the negative side: it is because you do not resemble the world. If you resembled the world, they would not mock or persecute you. And you can understand the positive side: you are crucified together with Christ, and you continue the Crucifixion of Christ in the present world. If you become conscious of this, then you are truly blessed. Paul then adds—in the first chapter of his Epistle to the Colossians, from which I read to you—“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you.” Paul is saying, “I have joy in my sufferings for you, the Church of the Colossians.” The sufferings of Christ become one...

with the sufferings of the believer; there is an identification between Christ’s sufferings and the believer’s sufferings. Pay attention: an identification, so that the believer’s Resurrection may also be identified with the Resurrection of Christ. All this constitutes Christian mysticism. Paul regards these very sufferings of Christ as a divine gift. Yes, yes—a divine gift. He says that it is not only the gift of faith that has been graciously given to the elect, for faith is indeed a gift. Elsewhere he says, “Faith is not for everyone,” because there are also perverse people. But there is also the gift of suffering. A gift. Listen to how he puts it.

“To you,” the Apostle writes later to the Philippians, “it has been graciously given, on behalf of Christ”—it has been given to you for Christ’s sake—“not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.” Not only to believe in Jesus Christ, but also to suffer for Christ. Do you see? It has been graciously granted to you; it has been given to you as a gift. Children, my dear friends, if someone enters this realm, understands it, and lives within it, we could say that he enters into the innermost depths of Christianity. Yes. From there, everything else he must do in his life will flow. Yes.

What is the reward of those who confess Christ? What is their reward? “Rejoice,” the Lord said, “and be exceedingly glad.” The reward is joy: joy here in the present world, and joy there in heaven. It is strange, you know, to suffer and yet rejoice—to rejoice and be glad. It is very strange. So if you ask, “Does such joy really exist?” of course it does. Joy is a reality. But joy is not an object we can acquire, as we acquire money, fame, wealth, or rank. It is a fruit. Joy is a fruit. It is the fruit of the union of Christ—pardon me—the union of the believer with Christ.

It is also a fruit of the Holy Spirit. When Paul names the nine fruits, he includes joy among them. Outside this union of the believer with Christ, there is no joy. There is none. All the joy we experience in our lives is only an appearance of joy; it is not true joy. Yesterday, as you know, we celebrated the memory of Saint Charalambos, to whom the church in which we are gathered is dedicated. And do you know what it means to be flayed, to have your skin stripped from your body, and yet to rejoice? It is astonishing. But does he not feel pain? Of course he does. He is human, and pain hurts. But what weight can that pain have when placed within the love of Christ and the joy of Christ?

It is astonishing. All the martyrs had joy. There has never been a martyr who did not have joy. And if Christ “suffered”—I place the word in quotation marks—then, for the believer too, joy will spring from suffering, from persecution, reviling, and the slander others may heap upon him. Do you know what is remarkable? We read in the fifth chapter of Acts that the disciples of Christ were beaten severely by the rulers. They had been imprisoned because they were there, in the Temple courtyard, at Solomon’s Portico. They were arrested and put in prison.

They were beaten mercilessly and then released from prison. They were also commanded not to preach the name of Jesus Christ. And the Book of Acts says: “The disciples departed rejoicing from the presence of the council.” In other words, they left the council that had ordered them to be beaten and so forth, “rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for His name”—for the name of Christ. Today, if someone dishonors us, we certainly do not rejoice. And, of course, we should not rejoice if we are dishonored because of some shameful act of our own.

Why are we being dishonored? If we are dishonored because we remained close to Christ, because we did something for Christ’s sake, then we ought to possess this joy. And Christ gives complete joy. Most people do not have this joy because they hesitate to share in the sufferings of Christ, because they are inconsistent religious people. They grew weary before they had labored; they gave up before they had struggled—inconsistent religious people, betraying Christ at every moment.

At the first obstacle, they betray Christ. With one knee they bow before Christ, and with the other they bow before their own ego, the world, and uncertainty. But, my beloved, this reward also exists in heaven—yes, in heaven. What does the Beatitude say? “For great is your reward in heaven.” Your reward, He says, is great in heaven. And what form will this heavenly reward take? First, there will be the public proclamation of the confessors—their acknowledgment before God, the angels, and the Saints. “I also will confess him,” Christ says.

“Whoever confesses Me before men, I also will confess him before My Father who is in heaven.” Do you see? This confession is the acknowledgment that this person is worthy, that he remained faithful. Second, there is great glory, as a recompense for the disgrace that these people of the ninth Beatitude endured here on earth. “Then,” the Lord says, “they will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” They will shine like the sun. This is the uncreated light with which the confessors will be filled. And third, together with glory come joy and blessedness.

“They,” says John the Evangelist in the Apocalypse. Who are they? Those who belong to the ninth Beatitude. “They conquered him.” Whom? Satan. “By the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” By their word: they bore witness; they gave their testimony. And it is precisely because of this testimony that they suffer. “And they did not love their lives even unto death.” They did not cling to their lives, even in the face of death. “Therefore,” Saint John continues, “rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them”—you who have made your dwelling, your tent, in the heavens. “The Lord God Almighty reigns; let us rejoice.”

“Let us rejoice and be glad,” and “let us give Him the glory”—Glory to God. These passages are in the twelfth and nineteenth chapters of the Apocalypse. What, then, are we to do amid our daily trials and temptations, when we have undertaken the great work of confessing the Holy Name of Christ in word and deed, through our whole life? Let us listen, while we are still in this present world, to the Apostle Paul’s counsel, so that we may take courage. He writes in the eighth chapter of Romans and the fourth chapter of Second Corinthians: “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us.” I consider that what will be revealed to us and what we shall enjoy—the eternal glory of God—cannot be compared with the sufferings of this present world, this present age. “For this momentary light tribulation of ours”—light tribulation, you see—“is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure.” We exchange the very little tribulation we endure in this world for things of immense worth, for an eternal weight of glory. But...

Forgive me, forgive me. “It is preparing this for us, while we look not at the things that are seen”—that is, let us not fix our eyes on what we suffer, whether persecutions or other afflictions—“but at the things that are unseen,” the things God is preparing for us. “For the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” What we do not see is eternal, while what we see is temporary. Therefore, let us stand firm as consistent confessors of Christ throughout our whole life. Here, my dear friends, we have completed the nine Beatitudes of Christ in ten lessons, since we examined the last Beatitude in two parts, in two short lessons. The Beatitudes form...

...a chain of spiritual life leading to Christian perfection. They are a summary of the law of the Gospel, both in faith and in conduct. When we reflect our life in the mirror of these Beatitudes, they show us what we have attained and where we still fall short. The nine Beatitudes are a measure of whether we truly live as Christians. More specifically, the first Beatitude shows us the degree of our humility and of our intellectual, moral, and freely chosen self-knowledge.

If you wish, it also shows the degree of our voluntary poverty, freely embraced for the sake of the Kingdom of God. The second Beatitude concerns penthos according to God—mourning for sin—which is the foundation of metanoia, or repentance, and gives birth to joyful sorrow. This mourning according to God brings to mind the joy and peace of God. The third Beatitude concerns the meek, those who are free from anger. Freedom from anger means not becoming enraged or losing one’s temper; those who are free from anger, the meek, do not fight against other people. The fourth Beatitude concerns hunger and thirst for holiness—when a person truly hungers and thirsts for holiness.

Allow me to say this, for I know it to be true. There are brothers and sisters among us, and children too—yes, even children—who hunger and thirst for holiness. I can testify to this; I assure you. The fifth Beatitude calls blessed the merciful, who imitate the merciful God. They are children of God: God is merciful, and they too are merciful. The sixth Beatitude concerns purity and nepsis—watchfulness—of the heart, as the essential condition for theoria, the divine vision of God: “For they shall see God.” They will see God beginning even in this present world. We spoke of this then. How? Do not ask how. We explained it when we considered that particular subject.

The seventh Beatitude calls blessed the peacemakers, those who strive to prevent conflict among people. The eighth Beatitude calls blessed those who are persecuted for the sake of the spiritual life. And finally, the ninth Beatitude, which we examined today and last time, applies to those who bear the reproach of Christ because they are His confessors. This is why the Apostle Paul writes in Hebrews 13:13:

“Therefore, let us go forth to Him.” To whom? To Christ, “outside the camp”—outside the encampment, outside the city—because Christ was crucified outside the city, on Golgotha.

“Bearing His reproach.” For Christ was reproached. Come, then, and let us also seek out and take upon ourselves the reproach of Christ. It is wondrous. And so, let us pray that we may all be found within this spiritually rich realm of the nine Beatitudes of Christ, so that we may experience the fullness of the blessedness of the Kingdom of God.

Ακόμη είναι καρπός του Αγίου Πνεύματος. Αναφέροντας εννέα καρπούς, ο Παύλος μεταξύ αυτών ομιλεί και για τη χαρά. Έξω από αυτή την ένωση πιστού και Χριστού δεν υπάρχει χαρά, δεν υπάρχει. Όλη η χαρά που χαιρόμαστε στη ζωή μας είναι μία επίφαση της χαράς, δεν είναι πραγματική χαρά. Ξέρετε, χθες γιορτάζαμε τη μνήμη του Αγίου Χαραλάμπους, εις τιμήν του οποίου ανήκει ο ναός στον οποίο βρισκόμαστε. Και ξέρετε τι θα πει να σε γδέρνουν, να του κάνουν εκδορά, να του βγάλουν το δέρμα, να σε γδέρνουν, και να χαίρεται; Είναι καταπληκτικό. Μα δεν πονά; Ξέρετε ότι ο πόνος... άνθρωπος είσαι, πονά. Αλλά τώρα πού ζυγίζει ο πόνος μέσα στην αγάπη του Χριστού και στη χαρά του Χριστού;
