Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that receiving Christ’s Body and Blood requires both spiritual preparation and reverent practical conduct. The parable of the wedding garment shows that all are invited to Christ’s banquet, but God grants worthiness through repentance, confession, and purification. True preparation includes honest confession without concealment, sincere repentance, fasting, and appropriate bodily abstinence before Communion.

My beloved, we are still with Saint Cyril, and now that we are coming to the end, I do not feel entirely happy, because he has given us so much. I only wish he had as much again to give us. I believe you feel the same. In the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, in paragraph 21, he tells us that, in order to receive Holy Communion, certain practical requirements must be observed. In other words, he teaches those who have already...
been baptized—his catechumens—how they are to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. We shall, of course, see exactly what he writes. But before we do, we should say that Saint Cyril’s instructions concern preparation for the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This preparation is both spiritual—involving prayer, for example, and everything else required—and practical. How am I to walk up to the Holy Chalice? What am I to receive in my hands, as in the ancient Church, when the faithful received Communion by taking the Lamb into their hands? Which hand should I extend, the left or the right? Should my fingers be open—Saint Cyril actually discusses this—or closed? How should I position my hands? Should I receive in one palm, or use both palms? And so on. All these things certainly constitute practical instruction. It is useful and necessary. Therefore, there must be preparation, and this preparation, I repeat, must be both spiritual and practical. You may ask whether such preparation is really necessary. If we bear in mind that we are about to receive this Body...
and this Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, that alone should make us understand that we must prepare ourselves. A certain gentleman once told me, “The thought suddenly came to me, so I went and received Holy Communion.” I said to him, “This must not be the result of a sudden impulse.” Many people, when the Divine Liturgy reaches the time of Holy Communion, feel a sudden impulse to receive. Very well, you felt the impulse to receive—but did you prepare? Many, many years ago—more than twenty-five years ago—there was a very young child belonging to my former housekeeper. The child was still very small, perhaps just beginning...
primary school, if indeed the child was even in school yet. One day, at the cemetery church of the Archangels, the child came forward to receive Holy Communion. I realized that the child had not prepared, but I gave Holy Communion because of that spontaneous desire. And shall I tell you something else? Many times in parishes—and especially in villages, where the situation is even worse—the priest comes out and says, “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near,” yet no one approaches except at Christmas, Pascha, and feasts of the Most Holy Theotokos. So when you see a little child coming forward, as happened then through a spontaneous impulse, it is as though Christ were answering:
“Whole congregation, are you not ashamed? Do you despise Me, your Lord and your God? Come here, My little child, and you receive Me.” That was how I judged the matter at the time. When I went home and told the child’s mother, she said, “But the child had not prepared.” I replied, “I understood that. I understood that the child had not prepared, but I valued that spontaneous desire, because the adults did not come forward to receive.” Nevertheless, I want you to understand that we must prepare. An exceptional circumstance, as we shall see later, is one thing; the normal situation is another. We must always prepare ourselves. As I have said, it must not simply be a matter of impulse.
We are afraid.
I wanted to present this to you by way of comparison, so that we may understand preparation and appreciate it properly. Let me give you a few examples from Holy Scripture, chiefly from the Old Testament.
In order to be saved, Noah had to build an ark. His family and the animals God had specified entered that ark, and they were saved. But the ark took 120 years to build. Thus, for his salvation, Noah had to build the ark, and that took 120 years. Now, if we are to be saved in the Ark called the Church, should we not prepare ourselves? There, the preparation lasted 120 years—and in the end, what was that Ark? It was a type of the Church. Here we no longer have the type; we have the reality itself.
Then there was the other Ark, the one Moses made. You know that this Ark made by Moses was an antitype. It was covered with gold inside and out, and within it were the tablets of the Law. Once, by divine allowance, the Ark was captured by the Philistines. When Eli, the high priest, who was very old, heard the news, the messenger also told him that his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, had been killed in battle. Yet he was not as shaken by their deaths as he was when he heard that the Ark of God had fallen...
into the hands of the Philistines. In his shock, he sat down on a seat without a back, fell backward, and died. God had already warned him that He would punish him because he had been far too lenient with his children. Did you hear that? He was too soft, too indulgent with his children. But I shall pass quickly over this, because I have spoken to you about it on other occasions.
Yes, the Ark was captured. Do you know what happened to the Philistines? What happened to them? Let me tell you, so that you may know and understand. If that wooden construction, together with the stones on which the Law was merely written, brought about all that it did...
They were not receiving the letters inscribed by God Himself. In fact, if you wish, those tablets were no longer the God-inscribed tablets. The first tablets were inscribed by God—the original ones—but Moses later broke them. You know the story, so I shall not prolong the matter. How much more does this apply to us! When the Philistines took the Ark to one of their cities, Ashdod, what happened to them? They placed the Ark in the temple of Dagon, the chief god of the Philistines—rather like Zeus, we might say. Indeed, they set the Ark directly before the statue of Dagon. When they went in the morning...
they saw that the statue had fallen from its pedestal, facing toward the Ark. They lifted it and put it back in its place, even though there had been no earthquake. The following day the statue fell again, in the same direction, and was shattered to pieces. They were terrified. The Philistines had heard many things about the Ark of God. All the miracles of God seemed to spring forth from the Ark. They were terrified. And that was not all: every man among them was afflicted with hemorrhoids and suffered all that a person suffers from such an affliction. They were terrified.
They sent the Ark to another city, and in the other cities all the men and women were afflicted with hemorrhoids as well. “Oh, no! We must send the Ark away! Let it go, let it go!” Then they considered the matter and said, “Is this merely chance, or does it come from the God who dwells in the Ark? We shall do the following. We shall take a cow that has recently given birth—that is, a cow with a newborn calf. We shall keep her calf behind and yoke the mother cow to a cart. We shall place the Ark upon it and send her away toward the borders of the Hebrews.”
They took a cow that had given birth. It is well known that animals that have recently given birth do not leave their young. You see this with sheep and goats: when their young are kept inside the fold, you hear them crying out. Then, when the door of the enclosure is opened, you see how the young run out and how the flock runs to meet them. You must have seen such a scene. Therefore, if the cow went away without turning back toward her calf, what had happened was clearly a miracle and not mere chance. They also loaded the cart with votive offerings, like those we place on icons: representations of the afflicted part of the body, all fashioned from precious metal, from silver and gold.
They loaded it with votive offerings and sent it away, hoping to be delivered from the plague that had fallen upon them. My beloved, not only did the cow set out, but without anyone guiding her, she went to the place where the Tabernacle of Witness stood—the Tabernacle that housed the Ark. The cow traveled many miles entirely on her own. The cow went by herself. When the Hebrews, while still out in the fields, saw a cow approaching with a cart and the Ark of God upon it, they were utterly astonished. And when it reached its proper place by itself, without a guide, the Philistines were convinced:
“This is a miracle of the God of Israel.” Then the Hebrews took the cow and slaughtered it. They took the Ark and restored it to its place, broke up the wood of the cart, and offered the cow upon it as a burnt offering to God. So much for the Ark, which is a symbol of the Most Holy Theotokos. It contained the tablets, which signify God the Word (Logos), because they bore the word of God, though it was only inscribed upon stone. But what do we have here now? Here we have the very Body and Blood of God the Word, who became incarnate. Tell me, then, how great the difference must be—and consequently, how much greater our preparation must be.
I have also shown you the negative side, because, if there is time—perhaps not today—we shall see that it is not only a matter of receiving eternal life. Whoever receives the Body and Blood of Christ unworthily receives judgment, condemnation, and damnation. Holy Scripture says that God is “a consuming fire,” a fire that consumes. I gave you this example precisely so that you might see how much more careful we must be when we receive Holy Communion. And then there is the summons: “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” With the fear of God.
How can we acquire this fear of God unless we understand the things we are now discussing? And there is more.
The wise Solomon spent seven years building the permanent Temple, and by God’s command he built it with every magnificence. How much more magnificent, my beloved, should this living temple of God be? This is what the Apostle Paul would later say, and what Stephen had said before him. What did Stephen say? That God does not dwell in temples made by human hands. Paul would say the same to the Athenians, opposite the Parthenon and the Acropolis, on the Pnyx—the hill of the Pnyx stands opposite them: “God does not dwell in temples made by human hands.” Then what is the temple in which God dwells? We are.
We are that temple. “Do you not know,” the same Apostle will say to the Corinthians, “that you are a temple? Do you not know that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit?” The Spirit of God dwells within you; God dwells within you. So you see: if Solomon’s Temple took seven years to build in all its splendor, how much more exalted is this living temple, which must receive the Lord when we come forward for Holy Communion.
If we consider who it is that lies upon the Holy Table, who is sacrificed and divided there, we shall be struck speechless—especially when myriads of angels and thousands of archangels stand around the Holy Table. Why are they present? To honor Him who lies there. And who is it that lies there? Jesus Christ. They are there to honor Him.
Saints have seen these angels. John Chrysostom says, “I know someone,” without revealing that he means himself. He speaks this way out of humility, just as Paul says, “I know a man who, fourteen years ago...” It was John Chrysostom himself who said, “I know someone” who, many times while celebrating the Divine Liturgy, saw the holy angels. And what does the troparion of Saint Spyridon, whose feast we celebrated a few days ago, say? “And as you chanted your holy prayers, you had angels concelebrating with you, O most sacred one.” You had angels serving the Liturgy together with you. And then there is that astonishing height—how could anyone ever attain it, O God and Lord! It is said that Saint Symeon the New Theologian never celebrated the Divine Liturgy without experiencing a theophany. Can you grasp that? He is the one who, as I told you once before, uttered that severe saying which frightened and deeply unsettled me: “If you do not see God in this present life, neither will you see Him there.” I explained then—years ago; it was not recently—what “seeing” means, and I was reassured, because we shall not see Him in visible form, as the Apostle Paul says.
We must experience Him so intensely that we are ready even to shed our blood in witness. I ask you: are you ready for martyrdom? But how could you become a martyr if you had not seen? Who gives his blood, the blood of martyrdom, if he has not seen? And yet he has not seen in visible form, as the Apostle Paul says—that is, he has not seen the face of Christ with his bodily eyes. Did not the Lord Himself say that days would come when you would long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, to see Him face to face, and would not see it? There is no contradiction. This vision, in all its richness, is inward. It is so inward, so deep, and so real that a person will give even his life for it.
Would anyone give his life for a myth, a delusion, or an illusion? Who would give his life for such a thing? And so, my beloved, all this gives us some measure of who it is that lies upon the Holy Table. The parable of the royal wedding feast also presents us with an image of worthy and unworthy guests—of those who are worthy and those who are not. You remember that parable. But who is worthy? Can anyone possibly say, “I am worthy”?
How, then, are we to understand this worthiness? In one of the prayers of the Divine Liturgy we say, “No one bound by carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach or draw near.” None of us who are bound by carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to approach or draw near to Your precious, holy, and most pure Body. Who, then, is worthy? This worthiness comes from God Himself. Therefore, my beloved, let us take heed.
A striking feature of the parable is that all kinds of people are told to enter the royal wedding feast. “Gather them,” the master of the supper tells his servant. “Gather them, gather them. Whoever is lame, blind, disabled, poor, or dressed in rags—let them all come to my royal table.” What a strange thing! Yet one man entered wearing a garment that was not suitable for the supper. And the master said to him, “Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?”
The man had nothing to say. The master became angry and said, “Cast into prison this man who dared to enter my royal banquet dressed in such clothes.” Strange, is it not? It seems contradictory. What had he said? “Gather those dressed in rags, the poor.” Would such people have possessed royal garments to wear to the royal banquet? Is that not a contradiction? Pay close attention here. Although all who came to the supper were required to be properly clothed, none of them had a wedding garment of his own. Each person would receive one upon entering the palace. You would stop at the entrance, take off your old clothes, your rags and filth,
and put on the proper new garment. Only then would you approach. So he invites everyone, but says, “You must wear the proper garment, which I Myself will give you.” The man who entered dared to go in without receiving that garment. And it is very clear that the royal table and the royal wedding feast signify union with Christ. They are the Mystical Supper, the banquet, the Holy Table, the union of the faithful with Christ, the fatted calf, and so forth. The meaning is this: “You are clothed in rags; you are filthy and crippled. But I will give you the garment.” And what is that garment? It is confession; it is preparation.
This is the preparation we must have so that we may be counted worthy—“worthy,” in quotation marks—to receive the Most Pure Mysteries. This is precisely why the practical summons is given. Immediately before Holy Communion, before the receiving of the Holy Gifts, the priest who serves cries out, “Draw near.” Come. Draw near. This again recalls the parable: come. But take heed: “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” With the fear of God, with faith, and with love. The fear of God, faith, and love are the criteria for approaching that supper. Do you possess these? Draw near. Do you not possess them? Do not draw near. Allow me to say this: you see how greatly we have expanded upon Saint Cyril—we have “fattened” Saint Cyril considerably. He gave us the occasions to do so. In earlier days I did not range quite so far beyond the text. But now we have indeed “fattened” Saint Cyril. Do not be surprised by the verb “to fatten” or “to make thick.” It is even used of God the Word (Logos): “The Word was made thick.” And do you know what this thickening of the Word means? It means His assumption of human nature. You will find this expression in one of the troparia during these days: “The Word was made thick”—God the Word.
He assumed human nature and became—take careful note—what He already was, together with something more: human nature. The Word was made thick. We must take care not to misunderstand these expressions. So, we have expanded upon Saint Cyril a little. Let us now look more closely at these three points, because these are not things we discuss every day and therefore know well. They are the criteria for our approach and, always in quotation marks, for our “worthiness”: the fear of God, faith, and love. “With the fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” What does the fear of God mean? It means nothing other than being conscious of who God is and who I am. If you ask a small child how great God might be, he will say, “This great,” stretching his arms as wide as he can. If you ask a simple person who knows little about the world and nature, he will say, “Well, perhaps as great as the sky.” But what does that simple, or rather unsophisticated, person see as the sky? Only what he can see while standing on a plain: the blue sky, which does not appear very distant or very vast, but seems to descend and touch the earth at the horizon. He will tell you, “God must be above that blue sky.” But the more we learn about what the universe is,
and the more we read in Holy Scripture, the more we begin, my beloved, to feel fear and trembling before the mystery of who God can be. If I truly grasp the vastness of the universe and how powerful, great, and wise God is,
I begin to tremble. This is why it has rightly been said that there is no such thing as an atheist astronomer. Certainly. But this is not enough, because our knowledge of God must not remain an inference, like the knowledge an astronomer or physicist may reach by the path of science. We must also know Him through the path of Revelation, which is the perfect way. It is not enough, then, to gain knowledge from my own experience of the natural world. Yet the more deeply I enter into the study of God’s creation, the more filled with awe and reverence toward God I become. You may remember the great Newton. Whenever he spoke and mentioned the name of God, he removed his hat. Certainly. And further, if I am to receive
the Body and Blood of Christ, I must first have understood and learned the true identity of Jesus Christ. I search for that identity continually in Holy Scripture. I assure you, I am continually seeking the identity of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament in relation to the New Testament—not in order to be convinced, but in order to be spiritually enriched. And when someone comes to understand and learn who Jesus Christ is—as I told you yesterday, when I seek to know the identity of that infant lying in a manger for animals—
the heavens bear witness to Him, and the angels sing His praise. Who is this infant? Who is He? I am trying to help you prepare for the approaching days of Christmas. Then—then let me consider whom I shall encounter in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Then I cannot but possess this fear of God. My beloved, Moses remained on the summit of Sinai for forty days and nights, awaiting the manifestation of the Lord. As the book of Exodus tells us, it took place amid lightning and thunder,
which inspired dread and terror.
And do you know the purpose of the lightning and thunder? It was so that the Hebrews, like all the peoples of the earth at that time, might come to know who God is—the Lord of Israel. Later there was no need for this. For do you know who appeared on Sinai? As we have said, we are searching for the identity of Jesus Christ. Do you know who it was? It was not the Father; it was God the Word (Logos). He spoke; He gave the Law on Sinai. It was He who spoke on Sinai. Later, He also spoke to the Prophet Elijah. When Moses asked to see Him, he said, “You tell me that I am Your friend. Show me Your face.” The Lord replied, “I will not show you My face, for no one can see My face and live. But I will show you My back. Go into that cleft in the mountain, into the cave. I will pass by and place My hand before the cave; and after I have passed, you will see My back.” And do you know what the back of God signifies? What majesty there is in human nature! “You will see My back.” And Moses truly saw His back in a living way. Where, you may ask? On Mount Tabor, in the human nature of God the Word, the Lord of Israel. Elijah likewise saw it on Sinai,
on another summit of Mount Sinai. He too saw the back of God the Word, which is His human nature. If Moses approached in this way amid voices, thunder, lightning, and all the rest, how much more should we approach with awe, when upon the Holy Table there lies before us God the Word incarnate. I must also reflect that I am a small and insignificant human being, while the Lord is absolutely holy and I am defiled by sin. I need a deep awareness of my sinfulness. This awareness will give birth within me to metanoia, to repentance, so that I grieve over my condition, my wretched state, and my misery. This repentance will quickly lead me to the Mystery of Holy Confession. Therefore, as I told you yesterday, I repeat: let us confess to a spiritual father, wherever we may find one. No one who intends to receive Holy Communion should remain without confession. I said, “who intends to receive.” There, before the spiritual father as though standing before God Himself, we shall lay bare our true selves. Let us hide nothing.
Sadly, I have discovered many times that people, young and old alike, conceal things and deliberately leave them unconfessed. It is not because they have forgotten—no. Sometimes it is out of shame, which is the more charitable explanation, and sometimes it is deliberate. Many people think they must present a good image of themselves to their spiritual father. They see him on the street, they hear him preach, they greet him with “Good morning,” and they want him to retain a favorable opinion of them. So they think they must not reveal their true selves to him and must hide certain things. My beloved, can this be right? Alas! If that is how you feel, then go to a spiritual father who does not know you. But why should this be necessary?
Am I unwilling to humble myself before my spiritual father? And let me tell you this from experience: anyone who has repented, whatever he may have done, provided that he has truly repented, is beloved not only by God but also by his spiritual father. Those of you who have experienced this can testify that a spiritual father has great love for the person who has repented, whatever that person may have done—even things we would be ashamed to reveal publicly. So let us not hide. Let us not put on a mask, a false face, as we do in our outward life.
I will not appear as I truly am. We put on our good suit, our tie and our hat, and say, “Good morning.” Society does not know us. There is no one who does not wear a mask in life—every one of us, without exception. Life is a parade of masks. But the hour will come when the masks will fall, and that will be the hour of judgment. Then we will no longer be able to wear a mask, because He who knows every person cannot be deceived. That Judge is Jesus Christ Himself. Why, then, should I hide? If I hide something in Confession, would that not be a mockery of the Lord, who stands behind the spiritual father?
Let us not forget that God is not mocked; God cannot be deceived. Furthermore, my beloved, fasting must come first. This was prescribed because, if God Himself required His people to purify themselves, wash themselves, and abstain from marital relations for three days before the people met with God, how much more should we do so? And notice: they abstained for three days. Some people, out of ignorance and with no desire to learn, say, “But did God not give us Holy Matrimony? What does it mean that I should abstain?”
God gave you Holy Matrimony, and God also asks you to practice abstinence. God gave our first-created parents Paradise with all its fruits, and God also said, “You shall not taste from this tree.” Certainly: God commanded both the one and the other. There is a most beautiful phrase in the nineteenth chapter of Exodus. The people had prepared themselves: they had washed, abstained, and fasted in order to receive this theophany. And what a theophany it was! There was thunder and lightning, and the whole mountain was covered in smoke. Listen to this most beautiful phrase: “And Moses brought the people out to meet God.” If only one could grasp the greatness of that sentence! Moses brought the people out to meet God. A meeting! This meeting with God—the meeting with God above all others—takes place in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
Thank you. Before the Holy Eucharist, we also need prayer and recollection, and we should read the Office of Preparation for receiving the Holy Gifts. If there is time, and if you are willing and do not feel that I am tiring you, then, God willing, after the feast days we can take this up as another subject, and I can tell you a few things about it.
The Office of Preparation for receiving the Holy Gifts—just a few very general remarks about it. When we are going to receive Holy Communion the following day, we should avoid social visits and gatherings. However good and sacred those gatherings may be, they do not edify us at such a time. We should remain in our homes.
You often ask to come to the monastery on Saturday, and I tell you: on Saturday, one does not visit the priest’s house. On Saturday, one does not visit the priest’s house. Why? Because the priest has many things to do—provided, of course, that he is conscious of what he will do the following day. Many things. So there should not even be Confession then. If at times we did hear Confessions, we did so only as an exception.
The priest must become calm and still, attain recollection, and study. If he has a homily to deliver, he must dwell upon it and first take joy in it himself, so that he may proclaim it to the people the next day. This is how we prepare for Holy Communion from the evening before: no laughter, no idle talk, no joking, and nothing that can truly scatter us and prevent that inward gathering, that recollection of the heart. And when the time to receive Holy Communion draws near, we must not show undue haste.
That is to say...
We must not be agitated because we are in a hurry, because... Please listen to what John Chrysostom says—I shall give it to you in translation: “Tell me, O man, why are you causing a commotion? Why are you in such a hurry? Are your worldly affairs calling you? Is this the very moment when you remembered all your business? But I ask you: are these not the thoughts and dispositions of a person with a heart of stone—to imagine that you are still on earth at the very hour when you ought to be joining the angels in their heavenly dance? Instead of soaring like eagles toward heaven, we...”
“...crawl upon the earth like serpents and eat dust.” This is what John Chrysostom says. That is why the celebrant gives the summons: “Let us stand aright; let us stand with fear; let us attend, that we may offer the Holy Anaphora.” Within the Divine Liturgy we have several practical liturgical commands—notice, practical commands. For example, we say: “Wisdom. Stand upright.” There is a full stop after “Wisdom”: “Stand upright.” But we say it without the full stop, as though it meant “upright wisdom,” and the meaning is lost. It means that the Gospel is the Wisdom of God; it is Christ Himself. Therefore, do not remain seated!
Are you sitting? Stand upright! People remain seated and do not even rise, including at many other, still more important moments of divine worship. These are practical liturgical commands. So this command means that we must stand properly: “Let us stand aright.” What does “Let us stand aright” mean? We must not stand there slouching or leaning against something. Stand properly, just as a mother might tell someone, “Stand properly,” or an officer might tell a soldier, “Stand at attention; stand properly.” “Let us stand with fear.” Yet our posture does not express fear. “Let us attend”—from the verb meaning “to pay attention.” Let us attend to what? To the Holy Anaphora. All those things...
...make up the celebration of the Mystery—the very heart of the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist—which is called the Holy Anaphora. We must therefore be exceedingly attentive. Let us now see what Saint Cyril says here. I also have a few additional things to tell you.
Paragraph twenty-one: “When you approach, do not come with the wrists of your hands extended or with your fingers spread apart. Instead, make your left hand a throne for your right, since your right hand is about to receive the King; and, cupping your palm, receive the Body of Christ, saying, ‘Amen.’” That is, when you approach to receive Holy Communion—let me remind you that even in the middle of the fourth century the faithful received in the manner in which priests do today. How do we receive at the Holy Table today? Standing around the Holy Table, as you have surely seen us do, especially when a bishop is present: after he receives first, the priests come forward. I said “first” deliberately; it is significant, and we shall examine it, though perhaps we will not have time tonight. First come the priests in order of seniority, and then the deacons, likewise according to seniority and proper order.
They receive Holy Communion. This is also how the faithful once received Holy Communion. The bishop or priest stood before the Holy Doors and gave the Body of Christ, while the deacon—or perhaps another priest—stood beside him with the Holy Chalice, from which each of the faithful received. Thus the Body of Christ was placed in their hands, just as we priests receive it today, and then each of the faithful received from the Holy Chalice. Now, having explained how the people received Holy Communion in those days, see what Saint Cyril says: when you approach, do not come with your hands stretched out.
“Do not approach with the wrists of your hands extended.” In other words, do not hold your hands like this. Nor should your fingers be spread apart like this. Do not hold them in this way. It would be absurd for him to give this instruction and for us then to receive Holy Communion like that. Instead, place your left hand beneath your right as a throne. The left hand, with the fingers together, as we have said, forms a throne, a seat for the right hand. The right hand is placed above it. You see how this is done, always with the fingers held together.
The palms are placed crosswise. I put my right hand over my left and thus make a throne for the Body of Christ. Saint Cyril continues: “since the right palm is about to receive the King,” your right hand is to receive the King, “and having cupped your palm.” To cup the hand means to make a small hollow in it. The ancients used to say, “Drops of water hollow out stones.” Drops of water make a little hollow in the surface of a stone.
So, to cup the hand means to make a little hollow like this—not like that, but like this. The right hand is above, forming a throne, and it is also cupped. “Receive the Body of Christ.” This is how you are to receive the Body of Christ, “saying, ‘Amen.’” You say “Amen” after the priest says what we still say today at the Holy Chalice: “The servant of God receives the Body and Blood of Christ,” and so forth, “for the remission of sins.” We do not say all of this aloud, though all of it ought to be said. We say the name of the faithful person. We must know those who come forward.
We should not give Holy Communion to someone we do not know; we should tell him no. And we say, “The servant of God, George, receives the Body and Blood of Christ.”
We say, “the Body and Blood of Christ.” Even at that final moment, we remind the person receiving what it is that he receives: the Body and Blood of Christ. We say “Body and Blood” because today we offer both together with the liturgical spoon, which is actually a small spoon, not a pair of tongs. The Greek term originally meant a small pair of tongs, because that was what was first used; later it became a spoon.
It is still called the “tongs,” and we remind the communicant that this is how he must receive Holy Communion. I shall not tell you what comes next—I shall not, because... Saint Cyril says: “Then, with every care, sanctify your eyes by touching them with the Holy Body you have received, taking care lest you lose any part of it.” Take care that nothing falls from it—not even a particle. This is why the Church eventually began giving Holy Communion to the faithful without their hands touching the Holy Gifts, because accidents occurred. There was carelessness and thoughtlessness.
Uh... It is as though you had lost something from your very self, as though you had lost one of your own limbs, and so on. “For tell me: if someone gave you grains of gold, would you not hold them with the utmost care, taking care not to lose any of them and suffer loss?” If someone gave you grains of gold, would you handle them carelessly, or would you take care not to lose even a single grain? “How much more carefully, then, will you guard what is more precious than gold and precious stones, so that not even a crumb may fall?” How much more careful must you be with the Body and Blood of Christ? That is why it is a loss—a terrible loss—if anything should happen, if anything should fall or be lost. God forbid. But I shall return to these matters, because I would still like to remain with the subject of our preparation for the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist.
First of all, experience has taught us that we must approach Holy Communion one behind another—not as a mob, not in that crowding mass where everyone surges forward at once. The danger of loss is immediate. And it also shows that we have no reverence and do not understand what we are about to receive. Once, at the old Church of Saint Anthony by the hospital, the Church of the Holy Trinity was being repaired—or perhaps it was because of the cold; I do not quite remember—and all the people who could not attend the Divine Liturgy there came to Saint Anthony’s. Saint Anthony’s was a small church, while Holy Trinity was a large one. An enormous crowd arrived. I do not remember exactly; it was around Christmas Eve or some such time. What can I tell you? I was frightened.
Should I tell you that the wooden iconostasis at Saint Anthony’s was almost torn loose? Or should I tell you about a little child whom they wanted to bring for Holy Communion? They took hold of him as though he were—what are artillery shells like? After all, the human body is long and narrow. You know how shells are carried horizontally? They passed the child from hand to hand until they brought him to me. His mouth was open. I gave him Holy Communion, and then the little ‘shell’—the child—departed in the same way. What can I tell you? It was dreadful, truly dreadful. My beloved, approach one behind another.
Because—because, as it says here, I must also tell you that the men should receive Holy Communion first, and then the women. The Apostle commands it: “For Adam was formed first,” he says. He assigns the man a liturgical order—a liturgical order! Adam was formed first, and then Eve. Therefore, the men are to receive Holy Communion first, followed by the women. These orders are recorded in the Apostolic Constitutions, Book Eight, chapter thirteen, paragraph thirteen. You will find it in the EPE Patrology, volume two, page 158. But I see that our time is over, and I have not been able to explain the orderly way in which people received Holy Communion in the ancient Church—who came first and who came second.
This was not a matter of privilege—not because someone was the mayor, the prefect, or a government minister. No. First came the clergy, then the monks, then the virgins, the children, the men, and the rest of the people. But, God willing, I shall read this to you from the original text after the holidays, on the first Monday, January 12—which is January 13. May the Lord bless you.

Δίνει τη ζωή του για έναν μύθο, για μία πλάνη, για μία ψευδαίσθηση; Ποιος δίνει τη ζωή του; Έτσι, αγαπητοί μου, θα λέγαμε, δίδουν όλα αυτά το μέτρο του ποιος είναι ο ανακείμενος επί της Αγίας Τραπέζης. Εξάλλου, η παραβολή των βασιλικών γάμων μάς δίνει μια εικόνα αξίων καλεσμένων και μη αξίων. Αξίων και μη αξίων. Ενθυμείσθε την παραβολή αυτή. Αλλά ποιος είναι άξιος; Είναι δυνατόν να πει κανένας ότι είμαι άξιος;
Κατά μεγίστη δυστυχία έχω εξακριβώσει πολλές φορές ότι οι άνθρωποι, από μικροί έως μεγάλοι, κρύπτουν, αποκρύπτουν. Όχι γιατί ξέχασαν, όχι. Είτε από ντροπή, κατά τον επιεικέστερον τρόπον, είτε από σκοπιμότητα. Πολλοί νομίζουν ότι πρέπει να δώσουν μια καλή εικόνα στον πνευματικό, τον οποίο βλέπουν στον δρόμο, τον βλέπουν στο κήρυγμα, του λένε καλημέρα, να έχει ο πνευματικός μια καλή εικόνα γι' αυτούς. Οπότε δεν πρέπει να πούμε τον πραγματικό μας εαυτό σε αυτόν, κάποια πράγματα πρέπει να τα κρύψουμε. Αγαπητοί μου, έτσι; Αλίμονο όμως. Ας πάμε κάπου να μη μας ξέρει ο πνευματικός, αν το θέλετε έτσι. Αλλά γιατί;
Δεν θα είμαι εκείνος που είμαι. Θα λέγουμε: το καλό μας κουστούμι, φοράμε τη γραβάτα μας, το καπέλο μας, λέμε «καλημέρα σας». Δεν μας ξέρει η κοινωνία. Δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος που να μη χρησιμοποιεί το προσωπείο του στη ζωή. Όλοι μας, μηδενός εξαιρουμένου. Είναι η ζωή η παρουσία των προσωπείων. Θα έλθει όμως κάποια ώρα που τα προσωπεία θα πέσουν, και θα είναι η ώρα της κρίσεως, και τότε πια δεν θα μπορούμε να φορέσουμε προσωπείον, γιατί εκείνος που ξέρει τον κάθε άνθρωπο δεν ξεγελιέται. Αυτός ο ίδιος ο Κριτής, Ιησούς Χριστός. Γιατί λοιπόν να κρυφτώ; Στην εξομολόγηση δεν θα είναι αυτό ένας εμπαιγμός διά τον Κύριον, που είναι πίσω από τον πνευματικό;
