Summary
Concluding Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, the lecture presents the Word of God as the inexhaustible treasure and person of Jesus Christ, approached through the whole human being rather than intellect alone. The epiclesis asks the Holy Spirit to sanctify the faithful before sanctifying the offered bread and wine, preparing them to receive the Body and Blood of Christ. The invitation “Taste and see that the Lord is good” calls communicants to trust Christ’s words with unwavering spiritual faith rather than judging the Eucharistic gifts only by bodily sensation.

We are studying Saint Cyril and his catechetical lectures, specifically his Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, and we have finished our explanation of the Lord’s Prayer. Even I did not imagine that this explanation would become as extensive as it did. I was glad, in this respect, because we can see that the Word of God has depth. That depth is inexhaustible; it can never be exhausted. And when we take the Word of God into our hands, we should feel a sense of awe, because the Word of God is a true and inexhaustible treasure. This treasure is a hypostasis, a person. The Word (Logos) of God is a hypostasis—that is, a person—and He is Jesus Christ. For, as the Apostle Paul says in his Epistle to the Colossians, “In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” We must always understand this, and only when we do have we truly drawn near
to the Word of God. I must tell you, of course, that the Word of God is not approached intellectually, but through living experience. And by “through living experience,” we mean with the intellect, the emotions, the will, the body and the soul—with our entire being, with the whole human person—so that the whole person begins to understand. Let us not imagine that only the intellect understands. The emotions also understand; the will understands; the soul understands; and the body understands. All this, to put it in a single phrase without going into too much detail, is called an experiential approach.
So, if we possess this experiential approach, we possess something of immense importance for our own lives. The discussion of the Lord’s Prayer has now ended, and a few “remaining matters” are left which Saint Cyril wishes to address before all his catechetical lectures come to an end. I say “remaining matters,” but I place the words in quotation marks, because the five Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered over five days: from Bright Monday through Bright Friday, with one Mystagogical Catechesis corresponding to each day of Bright Week. For this very reason, he gathers these matters together and presents them briefly, while knowing, of course, that as the Word of God they will never cease to be proclaimed within the Church—not now to catechumens, but to the faithful. That is why I placed the expressions “gathers them together” and “remaining matters” in quotation marks. These things never come to an end. The Word of God must always flourish within the Church, so that Christians may flourish as well. If we have a congregation that has fallen into decline, do not be too quick to ask
what the cause might be. There may be many causes. But the chief cause is that among these people the Word of God—the preaching—has declined. It has declined either in the amount of time given to it or in its quality. And once it has declined, we soon see the consequences among the people of God. We then encounter this deeply sorrowful phenomenon: entire Church communities living in the darkness of ignorance and lack of instruction, although this should never be so. Saint Kosmas the Aetolian also recognized the seriousness of this situation.
He left the Holy Mountain, even though, as he said, this might have been to his own spiritual loss, because on the Holy Mountain he could have attended more fully to his own soul. Yet he said that love for his neighbor consoled him, because he had to help the Greek Orthodox Christians who were living in the darkness of ignorance. So he took up his staff and began to do what? To preach. To preach. As I told you, then, Saint Cyril has a few “remaining matters,” in quotation marks, and they occupy only one page of the book—specifically,
two, three, four, perhaps five paragraphs. What he is about to say is liturgical in nature. The Lord’s Prayer itself, since it forms part of the Divine Liturgy, was mentioned and briefly explained because it belongs within the liturgical setting. These remaining matters are likewise liturgical. You may ask, “Were these the most important parts of the Divine Liturgy?” No. He simply selected one or two points, nothing more—and not even the most important ones. Saint Cyril also intended something else, and it is worth noting. He did not wish to give a full explanation of liturgical points; he would do that later. What would all the remaining time be devoted to? The catechesis of the people. But he also wished to mention a few practical details, those that constitute what is called liturgical formation. For, unfortunately, it must be said that we Orthodox lack liturgical formation. Our worship is marked by disorder, and this should not be so. He therefore gives us a few examples, saying, for instance:
You are going to receive Holy Communion. He is not explaining what the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist is; he told us that in the preceding catechesis, the Fourth Mystagogical Catechesis. Of course, he will say something about it again, because the Mystery is so important, but here he will discuss practical details. What kind of details? How you should extend your hands and how you should move. I take this opportunity to tell you more—something you see us doing in practice. If Saint Cyril mentions one, two or three points, I shall tell you thirteen or twenty-three; I shall tell you more. These, then, are chiefly liturgical and practical matters within the Divine Liturgy, and together they constitute liturgical formation. Suppose a woman enters the stillness of the Church while the priest may be saying a prayer. She walks in with her heels clattering so loudly that everyone turns to see who this shameless woman is, whose very presence at that moment and in that sacred place is announced by the sound of her heels. What is that? A lack of liturgical formation. “Madam, does that not bother you?” She would laugh. “Bother me? I do it deliberately so that everyone will turn and look at me.” For if it bothered her, she would be careful. At Pascha...
Forgive me. Yes, at Pascha. At Pascha.
A German couple came—tourists, perhaps in their fifties. After the Divine Liturgy, I do not remember exactly what I was doing; I was seeing one person and then another, as usual. They were sitting at the back of the church on two chairs. When they saw that I had finished, they approached the iconostasis and wanted to examine a few things—the usual curiosity! Clearly, they were not Orthodox. In front of the bishop’s throne we have a small rug bearing the double-headed eagle; perhaps you have seen it. Well, my dear friends, I noticed this: the woman stepped right over the rug so that she would not tread on it. She must have thought it was a symbol with some significance, and so she stepped over it rather than walking on it.
Then she continued walking, and she walked on tiptoe. They reached the iconostasis, looked at a few things, and left. And I said, “There is liturgical formation.” And what about us? We are noisy and unruly to the point of irreverence. My brothers and sisters, things should not be this way. We must learn where we are entering and how we ought to conduct ourselves, as the Apostle Paul says, “in the house of the Lord.” Do you see how we must conduct ourselves in the house of the Lord? Therefore, my dear friends, prompted by Saint Cyril, we must also speak about these practical matters, so that we may continually acquire what is called liturgical formation. Thus, in paragraph nineteen, he says: “After this, the priest...” When does he mean by “after this”? After the consecration of the Precious Gifts. So the priest then says,
“The Holy Things for the holy,” which means that the Holy Things belong to the holy. “The things set before us are holy, having received the descent of the Holy Spirit.” What are the things set before us? Everything upon the holy diskos and within the holy chalice. Where have they been set before us? They are upon the Holy Table; they are before us.
They are there before us. He says that they are holy. Why? How did they become holy? Because they “received” the descent of the Holy Spirit. This is important. “And we also are holy,” for we have been “counted worthy of the Holy Spirit.” “Therefore, the Holy Things are fitting for the holy.” Thus, the Holy Things are suitable only for the holy. “Then you say...” Saint Cyril is speaking here to those newly illumined through Baptism. That is, when the priest says, “The Holy Things for the holy,” you, the people, respond: “One is Holy, one is Lord, Jesus Christ.” There is one who is Holy, one who is the Lord, Jesus Christ. Or, better:
Jesus Christ is Holy and Lord. That is better. “For truly there is one who is Holy, holy by nature.” Truly and genuinely, there is one who is Holy—the One who is holy by nature, by His very nature. “For although we are holy, we are not holy by nature.” We are not holy by nature, but then follow three expressions in the dative case: “but by participation, ascesis, and prayer.” We become holy through our participation—we shall explain these things—through our ascesis, our ascetic discipline, and through our prayer.
My dear friends,
“The Holy Things for the holy”—the Holy Things are for the holy. Shortly before the consecration of the Precious Gifts, the priest says the following prayer. It is, of course, part of the great prayer of the Holy Anaphora, which is divided, if I remember correctly, into twenty-seven sections, with even the “Amen” counted as a section. The priest says: “Again we offer You this rational and bloodless worship, and we ask You, and pray You, and supplicate You: send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these Gifts here set forth.” Send Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon the Gifts set before us. The expression means that they are laid out upon the Holy Table: “and upon these Gifts here set forth”—that is, the wine and the bread—so that the Holy Spirit may change them into the Body and Blood of the Second Person who became man, Your Christ. Pay attention here, if you have already understood it. First, the priest asks God to send the Holy Spirit upon us, and only afterward
to change the wine and the bread into the Body and Blood of Christ. First upon us, and then upon the Gifts. Did you notice that? Why is this so? Quite simply, because we first ask for the sanctification of our own beings, and afterward for the sanctification of the Precious Gifts. The place that is to receive the Body and Blood of Christ must first be sanctified. For example, the Holy Spirit brought about within the Theotokos the conception and the carrying in her womb of God the Word (Logos) according to His human nature. But before this took place, the Theotokos had certainly been chosen. Chosen as what? As one who was holy. She was not, of course, without ancestral sin. Pay attention. This is what our Church teaches. You see, the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy) bore ancestral sin, just as all human beings do. Only the Roman Catholics speak of the Immaculate Conception and so forth. That is not correct.
The Holy Spirit came and cleansed the Theotokos from ancestral sin—not from personal sin, but from ancestral sin—and then she became a holy dwelling place in which the Holy One of God, God the Word (Logos), could dwell. So it is here as well: first the Holy Spirit makes us holy, and then He sanctifies these Precious Gifts, so that we may be able to receive them. This is exceedingly important. After this—or rather, before we say, “The Holy Things for the holy”—what do we say?
Let us attend.
“Let us attend. The Holy Things for the holy.” I shall not tell you why the priest elevates the Holy Gifts. I shall not discuss any of that, because we are not giving an interpretation of the Divine Liturgy. There is a great wealth of meaning in these things, but Saint Cyril mentions them only in passing. Let me speak only about the words “Let us attend.” We must understand that they mean we are to pay attention, because this moment is sacred. What we are about to receive in Holy Communion—what now lies upon the holy diskos and within the holy chalice, and what the priest elevates, the Holy Bread, the Lamb—is not mere bread, that is, bread alone. Think with me.
We have here the Body of Christ, the Body and Blood of Christ. Then the priest says, “The Holy Things for the holy.” Let us attend; let us pay attention: the Holy Things are for the holy. Not everyone is called holy. If we suppose that not everyone within our gathering, within the Church, is holy, then what of those outside the church building—or, better, those outside the Faith? Are they holy? Those who understand themselves to be among the holy should now draw near to receive the Holy Things.
And “holy” means two things. One is negative, and the other positive. The negative meaning is this: I am separated from sin. A holy person is someone separated from sin, just as a holy object is set apart from ordinary use. Remember why we call the cup containing the Blood of Christ the Holy Chalice: the other cups we have at home are for ordinary use. This one is not. What does that mean? It is set apart from the others. It is separate.
It is not for ordinary use. It is set apart for one purpose, and one purpose only: for the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist to be celebrated. Therefore, the negative aspect of being “holy” means being separated from sin. What examples shall I give? Fornication, adultery, theft, lying, fraud of every kind, and anything else. If you are not separated from sin, you are not holy. Have you separated yourself from sin? Then you are holy, though only in the negative sense. In the positive sense, the holy person is one who is united with Jesus Christ.
The person united with God is called holy. So “holy” has these two meanings that I have explained to you. Moreover, holy people are those who possess a certain “perfection”—and I put the word “perfection” in quotation marks. Where does this come from? The priest says, “The Holy Things for the holy.” Yes, the people reply, but only One is holy—that is, only One is absolutely holy. Our holiness is relative.
Therefore...
Therefore, a holy person is someone who possesses a certain “perfection,” in quotation marks, and at the same time is moving in the direction of perfection. This is what Saint Nicholas Cabasilas writes. Do you remember when we interpreted the Divine Liturgy on the basis of his commentary? It was many years ago; those of you who have been here a long time may remember it—about twenty years ago.
He says: “The Mystery is light for those who have already been purified, and a means of purification for those who are still being purified.” In other words, the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist, for those who have been purified...
He says that for those still being purified, it is a means of purification. It purifies them; it is both purification and light. Thus, while I am still on the path of purification and have not yet been purified, I cannot perceive the Mystery as light. But once I have been purified, then I perceive the Mystery as light.
You may ask, “What light?” As you may have noticed, I like to explain things carefully—I hope I am not tiring you—because someone may say, “Light, light—but what light?” My dear friends, light does not always mean the uncreated divine energy that even the eyes of a Saint could behold...
That is the light of the Transfiguration, the uncreated divine energy. Yet this uncreated divine energy may not be perceptible to my bodily eyes. It illumines my nous, my spiritual intellect, and I begin to understand and to see. It is just like a floodlight being switched on in a dark place, allowing me to see clearly everything within it. The nous is illumined, and it is illumined in such a way that a person acquires a light-filled nous, a nous formed in the likeness of Christ. This is what the Apostle Paul means when he says, “We have the mind of Christ.”
This is the mind of Christ. The Mystery becomes light. This is the mind of Christ. The Mystery becomes light.
All the faithful may be called holy, provided they possess at least some awareness—some real awareness—of what it means to say, “I am a Christian.”
That is why the Church is also called holy: not only because She is the Body of Christ, which is holy, but also because She is made up of holy people. They are all holy. The Apostle Paul addresses the Hebrews in his Epistle to the Hebrews and says, “Holy brethren...”
“...partakers of a heavenly calling.” Holy brethren, you who share in a heavenly calling. What separates a person from God, of course, is sin. That is why God says through the Prophet Isaiah: “Your sins have made a separation between Me and you” (Isaiah 59:2). Your sins, He says, are what separate Me from you. And when we are separated from the holy God, we are no longer holy. But when we do not sin—which, as I told you, is the negative aspect—then we possess sanctification.
The Apostle Paul says: “This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain”—the ending here marks the infinitive—“from fornication.” Here we have the negative aspect of sanctification. This is the will of God: that you abstain from sexual immorality.
Saint Cyril says, “Then you say: ‘One is holy, one is the Lord, Jesus Christ.’”
Indeed, Saint Cyril says, only One is holy—the One who is holy by nature. We possess sanctification by grace; Christ is holy by nature.
So we must understand that our sanctification is certainly very relative. Why do I say this? So that no one may become proud and say, “I am a holy person.” You may ask, are there people...
...who believe they are holy? Yes, my dear friends, there are. There truly are, and they say so. But notice the contradiction here and how they reveal themselves. When you tell them that no one is holy, they become angry. Since they become angry, quite simply, they are not holy. Here we see a contradiction, a little opening, a crack through which we can see just how holy this “holy person” really is. By contrast, someone who is truly holy never believes that he is holy. He always feels that he falls short. Indeed, some of you have told me—and many of you have said this recently—“I do not understand: the more I struggle, the more I see that I am worse.”
“Worse. The more I struggle, the worse I become.” And I answer: “You are not becoming worse; you are seeing more clearly who you really are.” In other words, the benefit of the spiritual struggle is that it enables us to see who we are. And so, a person who truly sees himself is humbled and could never claim to be holy. We may call another person holy, but never ourselves. If you were to say to me, “Father, you are a holy man,” I would answer—as I answer within myself, and sometimes say aloud—“If only you knew who I am.”
Do you know who I am? What does this mean? A person sees the fearful reality of his own self and can never lift his head proudly and say, “I have arrived.” Never, never, never, never. And so we continue. Saint Cyril says, “For although we are holy, we are not holy by nature.” If we are not holy by nature, then how do we become holy? He gives three very important things here. These are the three dative expressions I mentioned earlier. The first is participation.
With a circumflex and an iota subscript: “by participation, by ascesis, and by prayer.” With a circumflex and an iota subscript. It is translated: by participation, by ascesis, and by prayer. There is a general troparion commonly used for Saints who were ascetics: “Through fasting, vigil, and prayer, you received divine gifts.” Do you remember it? Someone who does not understand the meaning of the dative case will immediately think the sentence is ungrammatical. These are datives meaning “through fasting, through ascesis, and through vigil.”
Divine gifts. So, how did you receive the divine gifts? Vigil, fasting—how should we put it? Yes, you received the heavenly gifts. How? Through fasting, vigil, and so forth. Now, what corresponds to this in what Saint Cyril says here? What does “participation” mean? Participation in what? First and foremost, participation in the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. This makes us holy. No one can become holy without the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. So, if someone tells us that he has not received Holy Communion since childhood and is now fifty, sixty, or seventy years old, we look at him carefully and say:
“You have died.” He will answer, “I have not died.” But he has died; spiritually, he is dead. Yes. That is why our Church speaks about receiving Holy Communion frequently. But do not say to me, “You are the ones who do not let us receive Holy Communion.” When the necessary conditions are present—when, that is, I am not living in sin—then I can receive very frequently, because through this participation I become holy. Yet participation is not limited to the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. We also participate in other ways.
One does not replace another. There is study, for example, and also our effort to draw near to the Lord. How shall we draw near to Him?
He will tell us at the end with the word “prayer.” Prayer is one way of drawing near. But since I mentioned the last of these, yes, it means prayer, though it does not mean private prayer alone. It also includes the Divine Liturgy. Do you know how greatly the Divine Liturgy sanctifies us?
In general, there is what we call the prayer of the Church, above all the Divine Liturgy, but also every other service, such as Vespers. Do you know how much Vespers calms and softens a person? Yes, we remain in a little chapel or in our parish church, wherever it may be, and prayer is offered. We truly become peaceful. Then there is ascesis. Through ascesis we become holy. Many imagine that they will become holy without making any effort. They are grievously deceived. And do you know how they try to fill the void left by the absence of ascesis? Listen: by frequently hearing the Word of God. But I told you earlier that one does not replace the other. They undertake no ascesis at all. Yet as soon as they hear that Holy Scripture is being taught somewhere, they go here on Sunday, there on Monday, somewhere else on Tuesday, and elsewhere again on Wednesday. I am not saying that we should not hear the Word of God frequently. What I want to correct is the idea that passive listening can take the place of ascesis. Let me give you a small example.
I have given you this example before. No matter how intelligent a pupil may be, he will fall behind if he does not study at home. Of course, he may listen to the schoolteacher or professor, but that is not enough. He must study.
So, listening to the sermon is not enough. We must undertake ascesis—ascetic discipline. Fasting, for example, is part of ascesis. If you know that going out into the neighborhood will lead you to gossip, you tell yourself, “I will not go out.” That is how it is. Should I go out? No.
You must restrain yourself.
You will keep vigil, endure pain, and compel yourself to make an effort. All these things are part of ascesis. If they are not done, what do you think? Is it enough merely to hear the Word of God? No. All these things must be present. And now we move on to the next paragraph.
“After this,” Saint Cyril says, “you hear the chanter, who with a divine melody exhorts you to partake of the Holy Mysteries, saying: ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good.’” This comes from Psalm 33. “Do not entrust the judgment to your bodily throat, but to unwavering faith; for when you taste, you are not tasting bread and wine, but the antitype of the Body and Blood of Christ.” You see, he says that you hear the chanter—the one chanting.
A historical observation: there was one chanter. The custom of having a single chanter begins at least as early as this period. We are in the fourth century. Here is an opportunity to ask one of our theologians to conduct historical research and discover when the custom of the single chanter was introduced, because we know that in the ancient Church all the people chanted. So here is an opportunity. If any of our dear theologians, man or woman, undertakes this research, let that person come and tell us about it here and read the study to us. And if there are two people, that is no problem.
First one can present the findings, and then the second. Now, what does the chanter say? We still say these words today, from Psalm 33—an invitation to taste: “Come, taste and see that the Lord is good.” The word translated as “good” means benevolent and gracious. Which two senses are invoked here? Taste and sight: “Taste and see.”
Does this mean tasting with the mouth? He immediately goes on to say, “Do not entrust the judgment to your bodily throat.” Do not judge by saying, “But my throat, my mouth, and my tongue sense that this is wine and bread.” No. Taste with the inward sense, the spiritual faculty of the soul. Come, then, and taste; and also see with spiritual sight that the Lord is good. Thank you.
This subject is extremely important. In his Fourth Catechesis, Saint Cyril told us not to be deceived by sense perception and say, “But what I have in my mouth is wine and bread.” Do not say that. Nor should we make that other attempt I mentioned, by which some try to deceive themselves: “Look, look—what I have just received is the Body and Blood of Christ,” while trying to force their physical senses to confirm it. No, let us not force the senses. The senses perceive according to their own proper function: wine and bread.
But the word of Christ is of fundamental importance. Why? Did Christ rise in the Resurrection? Yes. Do you believe it? Yes. Do we have testimony? Yes. Did He ascend into Heaven in the Ascension? Yes. Therefore, He is true God. So whatever He said is exactly as He said it. The matter is settled. He said, “Take, eat. This is My Blood. This is My Body.”
The disciples did not taste anything different with their bodily sense.
They tasted bread and wine. But what did the Lord say? “This is My Body; this is My Blood.” What did He say to the people of Capernaum who went looking for Him? “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you do not have eternal life.” And they said, “What are these words? Who can listen to Him?” They turned around and left. The Lord did not say to them, “Wait, people. Come back here. You misunderstood Me. I meant it metaphorically.” Did Christ do that? He
said, “Unless you eat My flesh and drink My Blood, you do not have eternal life.” Why? Because “My flesh is truly food.” Therefore, what I truly eat—because it is eaten—is the flesh of the Lord. Who said this? Christ. And how do I know it? Christ rose in the Resurrection and ascended in the Ascension. That is how I know. I have the authority of Christ. Christ said it, and since Christ said it, the matter is settled. He said it. This is the inner reasoning I must follow when I receive Holy Communion. God willing, we shall speak about this next time. What does the priest say in the proclamation? “With fear of God, faith, and love, draw near.” When he says “faith,” what does he mean? That what you are about to receive in Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ. Do not doubt it. Would you like the negative side as well? That is why the Apostle Paul says, “Many become sick and die because they do not discern the Body and Blood of the Lord.” What does this mean? They regard it as something common. “It is nothing,” someone says. Do you now understand the Protestants and any others who think that Holy Communion is merely a symbol of the Body and Blood of Christ? It is an extremely grave
sin. And, as we shall say next time, God willing, it is the first sin. Did you hear that? Not believing that this is the Body and Blood of Christ is the first sin. Do you want to see how great it is? It is even greater than ancestral sin, which brought humanity to death. God said, “You shall not taste of it, because death is there. You will die.” Human beings did not show faith, and they died because they tasted. But what does Christ now say? “You shall taste, and you shall have eternal life.” Yet you do not taste, you do not receive Holy Communion, and you do not believe that it is the Body and Blood of Christ. Then truly, know this:
you will die. This is how I draw a parallel between the two cases: ancestral sin, and refusing to believe that this is the Body and Blood of Christ. This, then, is extremely important. Let me go back for a moment to the words, “that the Lord is good.” The Greek word chrēstos literally means useful or good. God is good and beloved. There must be a relationship of love between man and God, between man and Jesus Christ—a relationship of love. But if all you say is, “Now we love, now we love,” you are not a Christian, as someone was telling me today.
There are three dispositions: that of the slave, that of the hired servant, and that of the person who loves. All three are on the path of salvation. Saint John Climacus says this as well. I may do something with the disposition of a slave. I say, “I must do this, because otherwise it will not go well for me; I will be punished.” That is the disposition of the slave. Then there is the disposition of the hired servant: “No, I will keep God’s commandments so that He will give me my reward—so that He will give me His Kingdom.”
The third case is this: I neither fear the Lord nor seek a reward. I love the Lord. Needless to say, all three states lead to salvation, but the third is the perfect state. It is to say, “I will do what I ought to do, not because I expect a reward, but because I love the Lord and want to do it.” Truly, how do you love your parents—or your children? Let us take your parents as the example. How do you love them, or rather, how do you relate to them?
Do you fear them? Or, on the contrary, do you think about the reward you will receive—the fields belonging to your father and mother—and therefore care for them because you will inherit their fields? Or do you care for them because you love them? And if the poor things have no fields, will you throw them out into the street? Which of these three, then, is perfect? I love my mother and father whether they give me something or not, whether they possess anything or not. I simply love them. The faithful person—the one who receives Holy Communion and partakes of the Body and Blood of the Lord—tastes and sees that the Lord is good.
There is something here that often confuses us, but I will explain it to you. Let me also explain the phrase “the antitype of the Body and Blood of Christ,” so that you may understand it. Someone might say, “Then it is not the Body and Blood of Christ; it is only an antitype.” The word “antitype” is used in the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great, where it says:
“We offer to You, O Lord, the antitypes of Your Body and Blood.” The antitypes. This word “antitypes” is used before the consecration. Read the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great and you will see it there. If you pay attention, you will see that it comes before the consecration, because at that point they truly are antitypes—that is, sacred images of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Before the consecration, they are antitypes of the Body and Blood of Christ, and as sacred images they are holy. During the Great Entrance, many people kneel. They should not kneel at that point, as we have said before. But suppose, for some reason, the Divine Liturgy is interrupted—or perhaps it does not begin and only the Proskomide has been completed. These gifts are still antitypes of the Body and Blood of Christ, and we must not throw them away. It is not unheard of for the Divine Liturgy not to be celebrated for some reason. In that case, the priest consumes them reverently, as antitypes. When we reach the Holy Table and place them upon it, they remain antitypes. Until when? Until the consecration. After the consecration, they are the Body and Blood of Christ. We shall see this further on, God willing. I do not know whether I have already reached that point or whether it comes later; we shall see. When we say the prayer, we renew this faith of ours: “I also believe that this is truly…” Do you remember this prayer? “This is Your Body, and this is Your Blood.”
It truly is the Body and Blood of Christ. I have given you this explanation as well, my beloved, so that we may understand, so that no one may ever be scandalized, and so that we may know that this is how things truly are. But as you can see, there is still a great deal more to say here. God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

Ήρθε το Πνεύμα το Άγιο και εκαθάρισε τη Θεοτόκο από το προπατορικό της αμάρτημα, όχι προσωπικό, προπατορικό, και κατόπιν κατέστη ο χώρος Άγιος για να εγκατασταθεί ο Άγιος του Θεού, ο Θεός Λόγος. Έτσι και εδώ, πρώτα εμάς το Πνεύμα το Άγιο θα μας κάνει Αγίους και μετά τα τίμια αυτά δώρα, για να μπορούμε να τα δεχθούμε, και έχει πάρα πολύ σημασία αυτό. Μετά από αυτή, ή μάλλον πριν πούμε «Τὰ ἅγια τοῖς ἁγίοις», τι λέμε;
Ο ένας δεν υποκαθιστά τον άλλον, όπως είναι η μελέτη, όπως ακόμη είναι η προσπάθειά μας να προσεγγίσουμε τον Κύριο. Πώς θα τον προσεγγίσουμε;
Θα μας το πει στο τέλος με τη λέξη ευχή. Είναι η προσευχή, είναι ένας τρόπος προσεγγίσεως. Αλλά, μια που είπα το τελευταίο, ναι, είναι η προσευχή, αλλά ευχή δεν είναι μόνο η προσευχή. Ευχή είναι και η Θεία Λειτουργία. Ξέρετε πόσο αγιάζει η Θεία Λειτουργία;
Τρίτη περίπτωση: ούτε φοβούμαι τον Κύριο ούτε ζητάω μισθόν. Αγαπώ τον Κύριο. Περιττόν, βέβαια, να σας πω ότι και οι τρεις καταστάσεις σώζουν, αλλά η τρίτη είναι η τελεία κατάσταση. Το να πεις: «Θα κάνω αυτό που πρέπει, όχι διότι περιμένω μισθό, αλλά διότι αγαπώ τον Κύριο να το κάνω». Αλήθεια, τους γονείς σας πώς τους αγαπάτε; Ή τα παιδιά σας; Να πάρω τους γονείς σας. Πώς τους αγαπάτε ή, μάλλον, πώς στέκεστε απέναντί τους;
