Summary
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis interprets the final petition of the Lord’s Prayer as a plea for liberation from the Devil, not merely from impersonal evil. Saint John Chrysostom teaches that Christians must direct their hostility toward the Devil rather than toward people who harm them, recognizing the spiritual enemy operating behind human wrongdoing. The doxology restores courage after mention of the enemy by proclaiming that God reigns over all and is powerful enough to fulfill every request taught in the Lord’s Prayer.

We are in Saint Cyril’s book of Catecheses, in the last one, the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, where Saint Cyril explains the Lord’s Prayer. As you remember, today we come to our fourth talk on the petition, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” The very fact that we are devoting a whole fourth talk to this sixth petition of the Lord’s Prayer shows how rich its meanings are. This prayer is rich not only because of the meanings it contains in itself, but because the One who handed it down to us is God the Word (Logos). Its weight, therefore, is exceedingly great, so much so that even the final
letter has profound significance. It is as John Chrysostom says: “Even within a single syllable, a great treasure lies hidden.” And so, my beloved, we now proceed to examine the second half of this sixth petition.
The verb “to deliver” means to preserve, but more particularly to set someone free from danger.
In the present case, from what will God set us free when we say to Him and ask, “But deliver us from the evil one”? From what will God deliver us?
From evil? No—from the evil one. Not from something evil, but from someone evil, that is, a person. It does not mean something morally bad yet impersonal, but someone who is a person. And here it means the evil and wicked one—in other words, the devil. Of course, in His love and wisdom, God has left Satan for now and has not yet condemned him to eternal Hell. Yet he stands under judgment.
You remember that in Paradise, in the presence of our first-created parents, God pronounced an initial condemnation upon him. For the devil had hidden himself in a serpent—a real serpent. Take care: the account is not allegorical. First and foremost, it is history; please understand that. The account is not allegory but a real event, exactly as it is written. Saint Basil the Great says in the Hexaemeron, “We know the allegorical method very well, but here we are dealing with history.” So the devil was within a serpent and spoke through it. It was not, of course, the irrational serpent that spoke, but the devil through the serpent. And because the
serpent was, Scripture says, the most prudent of the animals in Paradise. “Most prudent” means that it possessed a certain practical intelligence. Many animals possess this. The swallow has the prudence not to expose its nest to northerly winds and rain. The sparrow, by contrast, lacks such prudence and builds its nest in the rain gutters—or whatever they are called. Then the rain comes, and away go the nests, the eggs, the little birds—everything. It lacks prudence. That is how God willed it. The serpent, then, possessed prudence. One sign of this is that it hides its head whenever it is in danger.
It “understands”—in quotation marks—that it will be harmed if struck on the head, but not if struck on the tail. The devil therefore spoke through this creature in order to persuade our first-created parents, since it was the most prudent of the animals. Do not ask me how it spoke or why our first-created parents were not astonished. That is a long story. In any case, it is history. And what does God say to the devil, who still appears through the serpent? Not that he assumed the shape of a serpent; he spoke through a serpent. God says, “All the days of your life you shall crawl upon the earth and eat dust.” What does this mean?
Does it mean that the serpent had legs and lost them at that moment? No. It had always been as God created it. You know that it moves by means of its scales. It has muscles throughout its body and moves upon its scales with astonishing skill. You should see one moving along the wall here at the monastery, climbing up to that height along fifty metres of wall. Of course, it may fall. It is remarkable.
It did not lose any legs. It had always crawled. And what does “you shall eat dust” mean? Of course, an animal that crawls might naturally be said to eat dust. But it means this:
“You will remain forever bound to materialism, O Satan. You will always remain with what is lower. You have fallen from the light-bearing heights above. You will never be able to ascend there again or to think of higher things.” This is what “you shall eat dust all the days of your life” means. And now the devil suggests this same thing to human beings and makes them materialists. Pay attention, then. At that time he received an initial condemnation. But his final condemnation will come at the Last Things (eschata), when the Great Judge, Jesus Christ, judges the living and the departed. He will also judge angels—
the demons. That will be the dread day. The demons know this. That is why they said to Jesus Christ—although they did not know that He was the Word of God and merely saw that He was extraordinary—“Have You come to torment us before the appointed time?” In other words, “Have You come to cast us into Hell before our time has come?” And they asked to enter the swine, and so on. Satan, therefore, will be judged together with sinners. What will the Lord say on the day of judgment? “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” Then the devil and his demons will be judged,
together with those people who bear his seal and have carried out his will. Until then, however, Satan still speaks and acts. And so we ask the Lord to free us from his destructive activity: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Save us from the devil. The devil is so powerful that without divine help and assistance, without aid from above, as John Chrysostom says, it is impossible for a human being to be set free.
Concerning Dan, Jacob said, among other things, the following: “Let Dan become a serpent lying in wait upon the road”—a serpent waiting in ambush along the way.
“And the rider shall fall backward”—other words intervene, and they are very fearful, but to save time I will pass over them—“and the rider shall fall backward, awaiting salvation from the Lord.” This is in Genesis, chapter 49, verse 17. Go there and you will find the fuller passage. What does it say? Dan is a serpent lying in wait upon the road. When it bites the horse with its venom, the horse rears up and throws its rider. The rider falls and is injured, and because there is no one to save him,
he will call upon the power of the Lord alone. Pay attention: there will be no one else to save him. From this prophecy of Jacob, the Fathers conclude that—even though the tribes of the Hebrews no longer exist today in an identifiable form—the Antichrist will arise from Dan in a figurative sense. His powers as ruler of this world will be so great that no one will be able to save the faithful except Christ Himself. The Fathers agree that this is what the prophecy means; it is not my own interpretation. Take care to understand this. You cannot be saved unless you call upon the Lord. Here the rider calls upon the Lord; and here too, my beloved, in our daily lives, the devil is so powerful that you cannot be saved unless you invoke the power of the Lord. Let us not forget that Satan has now been loosed. If you ask me, “How do you know that he has been loosed?” the Apocalypse tells us that his works will be exceedingly dreadful toward the end. Of course, every age has been, to a greater or lesser degree, under demonic influence. But our age has something else, something different. That is why John the Evangelist says that Satan will be loosed toward the end of history. What does “he will be loosed” mean? He will be permitted
to act with destructive intent. And because, Scripture says, he knows that he no longer has much time—“Have You come to torment us before the appointed time?” You see? They are waiting for that time—because he knows that he has little time, he is filled with great wrath. John the Evangelist says in the Apocalypse, Revelation 12:12: “Woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, knowing that he has little time”—knowing that his time is short.
From his activity, then, we understand that he has been loosed. My beloved, a vast amount of the devil’s seed has fallen upon the earth. I do not know whether any of you deny this, whether highly educated or less educated. He has worked evil upon everyone. It is astonishing. The corruption of human beings is accelerating rapidly. The curve of humanity’s corruption is rising exponentially—exponentially. Consider drugs as well. I believe drugs are an exceedingly effective weapon in the devil’s hands.
What devastation they cause! You should see what happens to young men and women. Sadly, I have the painful privilege of receiving such fine young people—drug addicts who take narcotics. I have this sad privilege because these children sometimes come to their senses a little or seek help. They go to their spiritual father; they go to the doctor; they go to their spiritual father. Do you hear me? I receive such children, and I do not know how to help them. Their wills have been torn apart. What can you tell them? “Do not take drugs again.” They reply, “I do not want to,” but as soon as they go outside, they take them again. Then they return and say, “You told me not to, but I took them again.
I could not do otherwise.” It is a dreadful thing. My beloved, crime has risen to an extreme level and continues to increase. What does all this show? Atheism, apostasy—what do all these things show? Do they not show that the devil has already been loosed? Accept it if you wish. Faced, then, with an enraged and raging Satan, who can stand unless God delivers him? That is why we say, “But deliver us from the evil one.” Let us also learn this: the person who knows God only a little, who knows only a little of the true God—
In our own age—something utterly unacceptable, especially among Christian peoples—people are turning to the worship of Satan. I told you this yesterday, and I shall keep telling you, because their ranks are growing. This is what we know as Satanism. Do you know their argument? They say that God is good, and therefore there is no need to appease Him, whereas the devil is evil, and so they offer him sacrifices in order to calm his anger. Just listen to such an argument! Do you know that Satanism is being taken up among students—especially secondary-school pupils, technical-college students, and university students? We have no university here, so no university students. Do you know how widespread Satanism has become? Those who wish to do so come and tell me about it. Out of a hundred, perhaps two or three will come; the others do not. Perhaps they go somewhere else, but not everyone comes to speak about it because they have repented or become afraid. They engage in Satanism. And so you see how we are continually falling into corruption. Yet when we say that the evil one is Satan, it must not be thought that his nature is evil.
His nature is neutral: neither evil nor good. Through his own free choice, however, he could become and remain either good or evil. The devil, according to his nature, was created by God; through his free choice, he became what he is and what he has shown himself to be. God does not create evil natures. Because He creates rational and free beings, each one decides for himself. John Chrysostom says: “Here He calls the devil the evil one,” and commands us “to wage unrelenting war against him,” while showing that the devil is not evil by nature. “For evil does not arise from nature, but from free choice.” Evil belongs to those who possess freedom of choice; it does not belong to their nature. “He”—that is, Satan—“is called the evil one above all because of the surpassing greatness of his wickedness.” The Hebrew word Satan means “adversary.” Do you understand? Antichrist likewise means one who opposes Christ. And there is something more. John Chrysostom continues:
“For this reason He did not say, ‘Deliver us from evil people,’ using the plural, but ‘from the evil one,’ teaching us never to be hostile toward our neighbor if we suffer some evil at his hands, but to turn our hostility away from him and toward the devil, as the cause of all these evils.” He did not teach us to say, “Protect us from evil people,” but “from the evil one.” Why? So that we should not think that human beings themselves are evil. No: the devil is evil, and if there are evil people, it is because the devil stands behind them. And if evil people harm us,
am I to look upon them with hostility? No, because the devil stands behind them. This is a profound observation for anyone who wishes to struggle spiritually. Have you ever seen a dog tied up? We provoke and torment it while it is chained. It becomes angry and barks furiously. Then we throw a stone at it. Do you know what it does? It bites the stone, because it thinks the stone struck it. But it was not the stone that struck the dog; it was the person who threw it. So it is here as well, my dear ones: whenever someone opposes us, we must look beyond that person and see Satan standing behind him.
We must never regard people as our enemies, but the devil. Theophylact adds: “For it is not they who wrong us, but the evil one.” People are not the true source of the wrong done to us; the evil one, the devil, wrongs us through them. Therefore, according to John Chrysostom, we must wage unrelenting war against the evil one and bear perfect hatred toward him. “I hated them with perfect hatred,” says the Psalmist. This applies to the devil and the demons, but never to human beings. Please, let us take careful note of this. Saint Cyril chooses the following interpretation:
“But deliver us from the evil one”—that is, cleanse us from the devil, the evil one. If the words “lead us not into temptation” meant that we were never to encounter temptation at all, He would not then have added, “but deliver us from the evil one.” The evil one is the hostile demon from whom we pray to be delivered. You see, all the Fathers understand “from the evil one” as masculine, referring to a person, because the genitive form in Greek is identical for the masculine and the neuter. “The evil thing” and “the evil one” have the same genitive form, and so the difficulty is whether we should understand it as evil in general or as the evil one, as I explained earlier.
All therefore agree that this refers to the devil, the evil one—a person. Let me translate what I read to you from Saint Cyril: “But deliver us from the evil one.” If “do not permit us to enter into temptation” meant that we were asking never to be tempted at all, He would not then have said, “but protect us from the evil one.” You see, the devil is called the evil one, and it is from him that we pray to be delivered. Saint Cyril is once again emphasizing something we discussed previously: temptations are necessary for holiness. Yet we pray that the Lord will deliver us—not that we will never encounter temptation, but that He will guard us from the devil. We shall struggle, but may He guard us from the devil. The Wisdom of Sirach speaks about this. My dear ones, we must never say, “A temptation has come upon me; what am I to do?” In the second chapter it says, “My child, if you come to serve the Lord your God,”
“prepare your soul for temptation.” Prepare your soul and your whole life for temptation. “Accept whatever comes upon you, and in the changes of your humiliation exercise patient endurance.” Whatever God permits to fall upon you, accept it; and amid the changing humiliations you undergo—not the virtue of humility, but the blows and humiliations you suffer—show patient endurance.
It continues: “For gold is tested in the fire, and acceptable people in the furnace of humiliation.” Gold is tested by fire, and people become acceptable after emerging from the furnace of humiliations—that is, from the blows and afflictions they endure. We are speaking, then, of dangers and of painful, not pleasant, temptations. These are temptations which, when a person overcomes them, bring him honor and glory. Saint Cyril continues: “Then, after completing the prayer, you say, ‘Amen,’ setting your seal by means of…”
“Amen, which means ‘So be it,’ upon everything contained in the prayer taught by God.” In other words, after the prayer has been fully completed and proclaimed, you say “Amen,” and with that Amen—which in Greek means “So be it”—you set your seal upon it. May it happen in this way. What is to happen in this way? Everything you have said in the prayer taught by God. Here we observe that Saint Cyril omits the conclusion given to us by Matthew the Evangelist. What does Matthew give us?
“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory unto the ages. Amen.” Saint Cyril, however, does not include this, but passes directly to the Amen. As you see, the conclusion according to Matthew the Evangelist is a doxology. Yet this doxological formula is absent from the Sinaitic Codex, the fourth-century book containing the Gospel that was preserved at the Monastery of Sinai. Some enterprising Russian took it away, brought the codex to Moscow, and from there, during the Revolution of 1917, it was sold to the English for a mere one hundred thousand pounds.
Today the renowned Sinaitic Codex is in the British Museum. This doxological formula, then, is absent from the Sinaitic Codex, from the Vatican Codex—the codex kept in the Vatican Museum—from the Codex Bezae, and from several minuscule manuscripts. I could explain much more, but let us not use up our time. Likewise, it is not cited by Origen, by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem in the passage before us, by Saint Gregory of Nyssa, or by several others. Nor is it cited by the Latin writers Tertullian, Cyprian, Jerome, and Augustine. This indicates that it is probably
a liturgical addition that later entered the text of Holy Scripture. In other words, the words “For Yours is the kingdom,” and so forth, were used liturgically; then they were written in the margin of a Gospel manuscript, and from there they later passed into the text itself. Yet this addition must have been made in very ancient times, which is why it appears in other manuscripts. It is found in the manuscript tradition on which the so-called Constantinopolitan Greek text is based. This is the text we use in the Divine Liturgy and the text we have in our homes. It is also found in the Didache, a book dating from the end of the first century or the beginning of the second,
which shows that the addition—if it is indeed an addition—is extremely ancient. It is also argued that it would have been contrary to Jewish religious feeling and thought for a prayer to end with the words “the evil one.” That would not be a fitting ending. This is mentioned by the late Trembelas in his commentary on the Gospel according to Matthew. It is well known that every prayer follows this pattern: a hymn to God, petitions, and a doxology. All the prayers of the Divine Liturgy
end with phrases such as, “For You are a good God and the Lover of mankind,” or, “For to You belong all glory, honor, and worship.” Thus all the prayers of the Divine Liturgy, all the prayers in the Euchologion, and indeed prayers wherever they are found, follow this pattern. There is a doxology—or, more precisely, first a hymn to God, because we invoke the attributes of God: “Almighty and eternal Lord.” The petitions then follow: “Grant us, we pray, this and that.” And finally: “For to You belong glory and honor,” and so forth. This, then, is the pattern: a hymn to God, petitions, and a doxology. All our prayers are composed according to this pattern. Consequently, the doxology may have been present in the Gospel text from the beginning
and may therefore go back to the Lord Himself. Why, then, is it absent from some manuscripts, including several of the most important ones? No one can answer with certainty. It is also possible that this doxology in the Lord’s Prayer was borrowed from 1 Chronicles 29:11. There, before the Temple had been built, as it was about to be built by his son Solomon, David offers a prayer: “And David the king blessed the Lord before the whole assembly”—that is, before the people—saying, “Blessed are You, O Lord God of Israel, our Father, from age to age.”
“Yours, O Lord, are greatness and power”—I underline power—“splendor, victory, and might.” I omit a few words. “From You come wealth and glory”—I underline glory. What two things have I underlined? Power and glory. “You rule over all, O Lord, the ruler over every authority”—that is, You reign as King. “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory.” These elements, then, are present in David’s prayer. Someone may ask, “How could the Lord have taken this prayer from the Old Testament, from the mouth of David?” Take care not to forget that the Lord drew many passages from the Old Testament
and gave them a new dimension. When David says, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” Christ also said these words. David spoke them, but he spoke in the person of Christ, and Christ repeated David’s words. So do not be surprised that the Lord could have taken the conclusion of this prayer from David. Later, the Church expanded this doxology liturgically. What is the doxology? “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen.” What does it mean that the Church expanded it? What did the Church add? “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, unto the ages. Amen.”
Let us look at the text as it stands, the text we are studying—that is, the text of Holy Scripture and the name of God. Let us offer a very brief analysis. Commenting on the words “For Yours is the kingdom,” Zigabenos says: “Let the things we have prayed for be fulfilled, because You are our King, powerful in all things and eternally glorified.” How are we to understand “For Yours is the kingdom”? It means that the kingdom belongs to You. Because You are our King, our mighty King, You are always able to bring to fulfillment everything for which we have prayed, having Yourself taught us how to pray. John Chrysostom adds: “Having made us anxious by the mention of the enemy and cut away all our indolence, He again encourages us and raises up our spirits by reminding us of the King under whom we are arrayed, showing that He is mightier than all.” In other words, the final petition—“lead us not into temptation,” and so forth—has made us alert and conscious of our spiritual carelessness and laziness.
The Lord cuts away that carelessness, encourages us, and raises our spirits upright. By reminding us of the King, He reminds us that we belong to this King and shows us that He is mightier than every power.
Again, John Chrysostom says: “Since the Kingdom is His, we need fear no one, for no one can withstand Him.” Therefore, since the Kingdom belongs to God, we should fear nothing, because nothing can oppose God. I do not think there could be a more classic example than the one I shall now relate briefly. When the three young men in Babylon, captives of Nebuchadnezzar—wise and distinguished men who held eminent positions—refused to bow down...
...before the golden image, the golden statue—not of the emperor, but of Marduk, the patron deity of Babylon—everyone else knelt down, while those three remained standing. And when everyone kneels, do not those who remain standing become conspicuous? Among thousands of people gathered across an entire plain, they were clearly seen not to have knelt. “Come here,” the king said to them. “Did you not know that I would punish you?” He had already proclaimed that anyone who did not bow down would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Nearby there was an intensely heated furnace, whose flames rose forty-nine cubits. You may ask why forty-nine and not fifty. I try to answer some of your questions too. It was because forty-nine is seven times seven, and the Babylonians used a system based on the number seven. Thus forty-nine—seven times seven—signified excess: the furnace was heated to an extreme. It was fueled with pitch, tow, and naphtha, a petroleum product that is highly combustible. The king said, “Now I shall throw you into the furnace, and we shall see what happens.” But the three young men replied, “We believe in the true God, and our God is able to deliver us from your hands and preserve us from all harm.”
“You shall see,” the king said. “Once I throw you into the furnace, I shall see who this God of yours is who can deliver you from my hands and from the furnace.” What a bold challenge! Yet when they were thrown in, they were not burned. Astonishing, astonishing, astonishing! This is what it means that nothing can withstand Christ the King. Nothing! If Christ permits us to succumb to temptations, and even to death itself, He does so for reasons known to Him. He Himself died upon the Cross, though He could have avoided the Crucifixion and death. But He willed to reveal all the theology that flows from the Cross. I shall say no more, lest I stray from my subject. My point is that God is the almighty King. Nothing can withstand Him. Then comes the phrase, “and the power”: “For Yours is the Kingdom and the power.” Power belongs to You—not weakness or helplessness. We may be weak, but we have a mighty Lord. Therefore John Chrysostom says: “Even if you are ten thousand times weak, provided that you are righteous, take courage; for with such a King reigning over you, He can easily accomplish all things even through you.”
Though you may be weak ten thousand times over, he says, only be righteous like the three young men and place your trust in God. Then, having such a King reigning over you, a King who is mighty, He can easily accomplish everything through you. God, therefore, is love, and He is also mighty. If He were only mighty but had no love, He could say to us, my dear friends, “Since I do not love you, I shall crush you.” His mere gaze, which makes the mountains smoke and burst into flame, would be enough to crush us. But if, on the other hand, He possessed only love...
...and had no power, He might say to us, “I am sorry; truly, I feel great compassion for you. I want to help you, but I have no power. I love you, but I have no power.” My dear friends, God is full of love because He is our Father. Did we not address Him as Father, saying, “Our Father”? He is full of love and also full of power. He possesses both goodness and power, lacking neither the one nor the other. “And the glory”—“For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory.” Since glory belongs to Him, it is surely also bestowed upon those who triumph in the contest, so that they too may be glorified.
God does not lack glory, nor does He need us to add to His glory. Therefore John Chrysostom says: “He can also make us glorious and radiant; for just as His power is great, so also His glory is ineffable.” As His power is great, so His glory is beyond words. And the wonderful thing is that He also makes us glorious. If you wish, keep always in mind this very precious passage from 1 Kingdoms 2:30: “Those who glorify Me, I will glorify.” Those who glorify God will themselves be glorified by Him. God, who is King...
...also makes us kings. Does not John the Evangelist say in the first chapter of the Apocalypse that He will make us kings and priests? And in the Old Testament—Deuteronomy, if I remember correctly—does He not call His people a royal priesthood? He is King, and He makes us kings. He possesses power, and we perform mighty deeds in God. He possesses glory, and He makes us glorious. This begins even here on earth, but it will be fulfilled in the Kingdom of Heaven. And how are we made kings here on earth?
I shall tell you another time, because unfortunately the clock is moving on, and we must finish this subject. It is enough that man possesses the governing nous, the ruling spiritual intellect. When this royal nous directs the person, and through it he beholds the Kingdom of Heaven, what more could he desire? Yet the fullness of these things will be found in the coming Kingdom of God. Matthew says, “For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory. Amen.” The Church adds liturgically: “the Kingdom and the power and the glory of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Since God is Triune, this must naturally be connected with all three persons of the Holy Trinity. Without question. For creation itself was brought into being by the Holy Triune God according to this formula. Theophilus of Antioch was the first to use it: “The Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.” In other words, God creates: God the Father creates through the Son, in the Holy Spirit.
Indeed, the creation account in the first verse of Genesis, and therefore the first verse of Holy Scripture, refers to the Holy Triune God: “In the beginning God made heaven and earth. And the earth was invisible and unformed,” and so forth. Then, “God said.” “God” here means the Father, while His saying is the Word (Logos). “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Thus the Father creates light through the Word. And light is, as it were, matter in a concentrated form; it is the energy, so to speak, that constitutes the material basis of the entire universe. “And the Spirit of God moved over the waters.”
What does the Holy Spirit do? He remains within creation and broods over it. How many times have I used this verb for you? He broods over creation so that life may emerge. Thus the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit, creates the world. But the same pattern is also present in the re-creation of man and the renewal of creation. For here again the Father, through the Son—who has now become man—and in the Holy Spirit, who is present in the Church, forms human beings anew and makes them new. And at the end, the whole creation will also be made new. This is why the Apostle Paul says so characteristically in Philippians that the Word (Logos), “being made in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man...” There is also something else of great importance. As ecumenism advances in our lives—as I have repeatedly told you in our talks on doctrine—it gradually causes our faith in the Holy Triune God to fade, leaving only the name “one God,” entirely vague and undefined. Who is this God? In any case, he is not the true God. Who, then, is this God?
For this reason, we must become accustomed to the expression “the Holy Triune God.” I have told you this before, and we must use this expression often, rather than merely saying “God.” If we say “Christ,” that is very important, because we are confessing Christ; otherwise, we should say “the Holy Triune God.” Take care: it is not wrong to say “God.” Holy Scripture itself repeatedly says “God.” But because these are difficult times, because our convictions may be altered, and because it is good for us to become accustomed to the expression “the Holy Triune God,” then, when others come and offer us some vague, undefined God, we shall say: “Who is this God? He is alien...
...and foreign to us.” Thus the Kingdom and the power and the glory belong to the Holy Triune God. And so, my dear friends, I conclude. “Forever.” What does this mean? Zigabenos says, “Always.” “For this is what the plural expression ‘unto the ages’ signifies.” In other words, the plural expresses eternity. We therefore have a doxological formula addressed to the Holy Triune God, to whom belong the glory, the power, and the Kingdom unto ages of ages, sealed with “Amen.” And now Saint Cyril says, as I have already told you...
...and I repeat: “Then, after completing the prayer, you say ‘Amen,’ sealing with the ‘Amen’—which means, ‘May it be so’—all that is contained in the prayer taught by God.” In other words, may everything we have said and prayed for come to pass. This “Amen” belongs to the people of God; the people are to say, “Amen.” Would you like something more? During the Divine Liturgy, it would be good for the whole congregation to recite the “Our Father.” And when we reach the final “Amen,” we should feel that it is truly our own, something that should shake us to the depths of our being as we ask for all these things. Saint Cyril calls this prayer “taught by God,” because God Himself taught it. Therefore its depth, its breadth, and its worth are all limitless, and it demands profound reverence and great attentiveness from those who pray—especially when many are gathered within the Church and together recite the “Our Father.” And so, my dear friends, let us now recite consciously this wondrous Lord’s Prayer, taught by God, which, according to the Fathers, is the epitome of the entire Gospel, so that in this way we may...
...approach the Holy Triune God with hearts deeply moved. May the Lord bless you.

Εμπροχημένου. Εν προκειμένω, από τι θα μας ελευθερώσει ο Θεός όταν λέμε εμείς και του ζητούμε «ἀλλὰ ῥῦσαι ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ»; Από τι θα μας απελευθερώσει ο Θεός;
Κατανοεί, εντός εισαγωγικών κατανοεί, ότι θα πάθει κακό εάν χτυπηθεί στο κεφάλι, ενώ δεν θα πάθει κακό αν χτυπηθεί στην ουρά. Έτσι, λοιπόν, από εκεί μίλησε ο διάβολος για να πείσει τους πρωτοπλάστους, εφόσον των ζώων ήτο το φρονιμότερον. Μη μου πείτε πώς μίλησε ή δεν παραξενεύτηκαν οι πρωτόπλαστοι. Είναι μεγάλη ιστορία. Πάντως είναι ιστορία. Και τι του λέγει ο Θεός, του Διαβόλου, πάντοτε εμφανιζομένου με τη μορφή του φιδιού; Όχι ότι πήρε σχήμα φιδιού· μίλησε από ένα φίδι. Και λέγει: «Σ’ όλη σου τη ζωή θα σέρνεσαι στη γη και θα τρως χώμα». Τι σημαίνει αυτό;
Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο, τι κάνει; Μένει στη δημιουργία, την επωάζει. Πόσες φορές σας έχω πει αυτό το ρήμα; Την επωάζει για να βγει η ζωή. Έτσι ο Πατήρ διά του Υιού εν Αγίω Πνεύματι δημιουργεί τον κόσμο. Αλλά το ίδιο σχήμα υπάρχει και στην αναδημιουργία του ανθρώπου και στην ανακαίνιση της κτίσεως. Διότι πάλι λέγει εδώ ότι ο Πατήρ διά του Υιού, ο οποίος τώρα είναι άνθρωπος, εν Αγίω Πνεύματι, που είναι στην Εκκλησία, διαμορφώνει τους ανθρώπους και τους κάνει καινούργιους. Αλλά και στο τέλος όλα θα γίνουν καινούργια, ολόκληρη η δημιουργία. Γι’ αυτό λέγει έτσι χαρακτηριστικά, όπως το λέγει ο Απόστολος Παύλος στους Φιλιππησίους, ότι «εν ομοιώματι ανθρώπων γενόμενος», ο Λόγος, «και σχήματι ευρεθείς ως άνθρωπος». Και ακόμη κάτι σπουδαίο. Προχωρώντας ο οικουμενισμός στη ζωή μας, που σας έλεγα και σας ξανάλεγα στο θέμα των δογμάτων εκεί που κάνουμε, όλο και ξεθωριάζει, ο οικουμενισμός ξεθωριάζει την πίστη μας εις τον Άγιο Τριαδικό Θεό, μένοντας μόνο στο όνομα «ένας Θεός», τελείως ακαθόριστα, τελείως ακαθόριστα. Ποιος είναι αυτός ο Θεός; Πάντως δεν είναι ο Θεός ο αληθινός. Ποιος είναι αυτός ο Θεός;
