Summary
The plural language of the Lord’s Prayer reveals that Christians ask the Father to protect the entire Church, not merely themselves, from temptation and the evil one. The Epistle to Diognetus portrays Christians as citizens who share ordinary human life yet remain pilgrims, obeying civil laws while living according to the higher standards of heaven. Saints and martyrs demonstrate that trials test faith, hope, and love, purify the soul like gold in fire, and strengthen patient endurance on the path to the Kingdom of God.

My dear friends, we continue with the final petition of the Lord’s Prayer, following the analysis given by Saint Cyril of Jerusalem in his catecheses to the catechumens, though we are trying to examine it in greater depth. We have reached the last petition: “Our Father, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” First of all, I would like to point out that this whole prayer, the model and pattern of prayer, is composed in the plural.
“Our Father”—our Father; “our daily bread”—our bread. And here too it says, “Lead us not into temptation.” This is because the communal—or, if you prefer, ecclesial—character of this prayer is taken into account. In other words, I do not come before God the Father to speak only about my own bread; I say, “our bread.” The same applies to spiritual matters. I cannot speak to God only about my own particular temptation, but also about a temptation that may overtake the ecclesial community—that is, the Church. This is why we say, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” For it is not merely a personal temptation; it may be a temptation affecting the whole Church. And it is very significant that, where temptation is concerned, all of us care about one another. For example, is a drought not a temptation? Would we say that it concerns the farmers but not us? Who told you that a drought, or any other national ordeal, does not concern everyone? Is that not a temptation? Would we say that it concerns only the villagers,
and not us? If a national ordeal occurs, perhaps on the northern borders, will it not concern southern Greece? Such a thing is unthinkable. What does this mean? It means that we all care for everyone—everyone for everyone. This is why we say, “Lead us not into temptation.” But why have I told you this now, after offering the prayer a short while ago? I realized that I had not commented on the word “us” in this sixth petition, and so I have now supplied what was missing. But be assured that the more one studies and studies, the more one continually discovers new things. For the Word of God is literally unfathomable in its meanings—unfathomable. You remember,
last time we said that, if the whole world lies under the power of the evil one, we ourselves live within the world. How, then, can we escape the evil one—who is the devil—and all the things that arise within the world and throughout history? In other words, how should we live? How should we exist? I told you that there are three ways—three ways for a Christian: the way of coexistence, the way of simple presence, and the way of isolation.
Isolation. We have already seen what coexistence means. It is, more or less, when the Christian identifies himself with what we call “the world.” Yet according to John the Evangelist, the whole world lies under the power of the evil one, in the embrace of the devil. What does this mean? I call myself a Christian, but in reality I do not wish to be distinguishable from the world. This is nothing other than a secularized Christian. You should understand that the secularized Christian is convinced that he is a Christian. If you tell him that he will not be saved, or that secularization does not lead to the Kingdom of God, he will tear his garments in protest.
He will say to you, “What are you talking about? Do you mean that you are better than I am?” This is also the source of that conflict in which secularized Christians say to devout Christians, “So you are making a great show of crossing yourself before me?”—and countless other things of this kind. He rejects what you tell him, and take note: he is not pretending. He consciously rejects it. He truly believes that he is a Christian and that he will be saved. Yet he has identified himself with the world and does not realize it. This secularization is the most terrible and chief enemy of the spiritual person.
Unfortunately, although the Church is always called to bring the world into the life of the Church, we have reached the point where the Church herself is being secularized. Instead of the Church correcting the world, remaining within it and bringing it into the life of the Church, the world remains within the Church and secularizes her. Since the Church is the body of Christ, however, this should not be understood as anything strange happening to the Church herself. Not at all. It is simply that Christians have lost their spiritual direction. The Church remains the Church, spotless and holy; it is Christians who, as I have told you, have lost their direction.
This is what the Apostle Paul says in his Second Epistle to the Corinthians, drawing it from the Old Testament: “Do not be unequally yoked.” In the Old Testament it says: You shall not place two different kinds of animals under the same yoke. Of course, this may also have—and perhaps at the immediate level does have—a practical explanation:
if you yoke an ox together with a little donkey to plow, the ox is strong,
The little donkey is a smaller animal with less strength, so it lags behind. The yoke would be pulled crooked. What God said undoubtedly has a practical explanation. Yet someone might ask: Did God really need to say this? Why would God say it? Would it not have been obvious for people to understand? Did God have to tell them? For what reason? We find similar cases. He says that in a field where you have planted trees, you shall not sow something else. And there is a third case: when you make a fabric of wool, you shall not weave another kind of thread into it, such as linen—what we might call a wool-and-cotton blend.
Today these things are not sins. But at that time they carried a meaning. What meaning? God says—or rather, the Apostle Paul says—“Is it for oxen that God is concerned?” There is another commandment: You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing. “Is it for oxen that God is concerned?” he asks. Is God, then, concerned about the oxen? No. “It was written for our sake,” says the Apostle Paul. It was written for us, so that we might discover its spiritual meaning. And in this case, the spiritual meaning that Paul carries over from the Old Testament into the New Testament is: “Do not be unequally yoked,” that is,
do not place the same yoke upon people who are unlike one another, because things will not go well. In other words, you cannot share your life with an unbeliever, with a worldly person, if you wish to be a spiritual person. You cannot live that way. A lady was telling me this evening—and indeed, if you like, she may be here listening to me. Many people, both men and women, have told me the same thing. An outing is organized by coach. Those who have gathered and are, of course, of the same mind number thirty. But then they say, “The coach holds fifty. What shall we do? Travel with empty seats? Pay a higher fare?” So they invite another twenty people.
We set out on our excursion, our pilgrimage, and so forth. What happens then? You have all experienced what happens. At some point, perhaps even when you are first going to the Divine Liturgy, some want to put on music and dance in the aisle of the coach. The devout people say, “Wait a moment—we are going to the Divine Liturgy.” And the others reply, “So what?” Whenever people tell me about this, I say, “Do you not understand that we cannot keep close company with people who are not of the same mind?” This is the meaning of, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” My dear friends, we should keep company with those who share our way of life, so that we do not encounter problems—not only problems of conduct, but also the danger of these things seeping into us and influencing us. That is how it is.
You understand, then, that true coexistence between the believer and the unbeliever—the irreverent, the negligent, or whatever else you may call him—is not possible. That option is rejected. We now come to the other option, that of simple presence. I am in the world; I have not departed from it. I simply live among other people. How do I live among them? I may have all kinds of necessary relations with them—matters of taxation or culture, cooperation in our work, in the shop, with our employees, with superiors and subordinates, or as fellow employees. This is the sense in which I live among them. But I do not have close—close, I emphasize—close relationships with worldly people. I greet them, I do good to them—take note, I do good to them—I assist them and I love them. But if I profess to live the spiritual life, I cannot have close relationships with the people of this world. This is entirely natural. This method, this way, is called simple presence. I am present in this world. Would you like me to give you an image of this, one that I have read to you on other occasions, from the Epistle to Diognetus?
Listen to what it says there. It is an early Christian text, a very beautiful early Christian text. I am only selecting certain phrases, of course, and not quoting everything; the passage contains more. “For Christians are distinguished from the rest of mankind neither by country, nor by language”—these words are in the dative case: neither with respect to country nor with respect to speech, that is, language—“nor by customs.” Customs—pardon me, not morals; customs, habits. They “are not distinguished from the rest of mankind.”
Are they distinguished, it asks, from other people? They speak the same language. What are we? Greeks, all of us—very well. It does not say that they live in some other place, in heavenly upper rooms while everyone else is down below on the earth. No. They do not speak some other language, and they follow the ordinary customs of life. “They live in their own countries, but as sojourners.” Each person, of course, lives in his own homeland, yet he feels that he is a sojourner in this world. “They share in everything as citizens.” Although we regard heaven as our homeland, we also have an earthly homeland. “They share in everything as citizens, yet endure everything as strangers.”
They take part in everything as citizens. In what does a citizen take part? First of all, so to speak, in the right to vote. As soon as I say “citizen,” political rights immediately come to mind. Therefore, I have the right to vote and, if I wish, to stand for election. I also enjoy whatever privileges a citizen may have within a state, such as receiving the protection of the security services. If I telephone and say that thieves are in my house and, God help me, I know they are about to kill me, will the police not come running? If I fall ill, do I not go to the hospital? In other words, I possess all the privileges that a citizen may have within a society.
“They endure everything”—yes—“yet endure everything as strangers.” A stranger is one thing and a citizen another. I am a citizen; but because I am chiefly a citizen of the Kingdom of God, although I fulfill my political obligations—pardon me, my obligations as a citizen—and exercise my rights, in the end I remain a stranger. In essence, I am a stranger to this present world, though not in the sense of being a hopeless or disillusioned person. “Every foreign land is their homeland, and every homeland is foreign to them.” How beautiful! Not only because the sentence is so beautifully composed, but also...
because of its meaning. Every foreign land is a homeland for Christians, and every homeland of Christians is a foreign land. “They marry like everyone else and have children.” Christians marry just as all other people do. And what do they do? They have children. “But they do not cast away those who are born.” They do not cast away their newborn children; that is, they do not have abortions. Alas for us—we should cover our faces with both hands and hide them. I say this to His Eminence Theologos—Father Zisis was and still is a spiritual father.
Have you seen it? Surely you have seen that our Christians have abortions. Yes, indeed. Alas for us. This is what coexistence means in the sense we have described: “I shall do whatever worldly people do.” Alas for us. But what does the text say here? In this case, I live in this world, but I do not take part in the deeds of this world. I have children, but I do not cast them away. And, if you wish, the phrase does not literally mean abortion, because at that time there was the custom of allowing a child to be born and then abandoning it—casting it away. You may remember the story of Romulus and Remus, those of you who have read a little more and know it. Yes.
You know, there are also foundlings—children who have been abandoned. So Christians have children, but they do not cast them away. And how do they have children? There is nothing unusual about it. “They share a common table”; that is, they set a common table and say, “Come, let us eat.”
But not “a common bed.” It is not like that film from many years ago whose advertisement outside said, “Come, let us exchange wives.” A common table, yes, but not a common bed. And what would that be? Adultery. The faithful do not commit adultery.
You may ask, “Do Christians commit adultery?” Are only monks Christians? Yes, Christians do commit adultery.
I do not want to make you suspicious—if wives suspect their husbands, or husbands their wives, God forbid. “They are in the flesh, but they do not live according to the flesh.” They live in the flesh, he says, but they do not lead a carnal life. “They dwell on earth, but their citizenship is in heaven”: their manner of life is heavenly. “They obey the established laws.” How beautiful this is! “Yet by their own lives they surpass the laws.” They obey the laws, whatever the laws of the state may be. Yet their manner of life is so noble
that by the way they live, they surpass even the laws of the state. What, then, do we see here? We see that Christians can live in the world without taking part in the world’s schemes. In other words, Christians live according to the Gospel, as far as they can—and they can. The third way is separation. What do we mean by separation? Separation, my dear ones, means living without seeing other people. Under special circumstances, of course, separation is a way of life, as in monasticism. What is monasticism?
It is a form of separation. It may be solitary—the so-called eremitic life—or it may be communal, as in a cenobitic monastery, where people withdraw from human society and live within their own community, their own commonwealth. It is a way of cooperation and love, a guileless—that is, a simple—way of life, in which no one boasts that he has more than another. There is no economic competition. This, then, is also a way of life, but it is a special one. Can everyone live this way? Certainly not. The Apostle Paul himself says, “Do not associate with the sexually immoral.”
To associate means to mix and mingle with immoral people—in this particular case, with the sexually immoral. Yet, he says, I do not mean the sexually immoral people of this world. But if anyone who is called a brother is sexually immoral, you must not even eat with him. Do not even eat with him; separate him from your fellowship. If he meant the sexually immoral people of this world—the world in the sense we have been discussing—then, as the Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5:9, “You would have to go out of the world altogether.”
What would you have to do? Leave the world. But if a brother has a bad reputation, do not keep company with him. This does not refer to the sexually immoral people of this world. What does he mean? He means the second case we spoke of earlier: I live in the world, attend to my work, and greet everyone—the sexually immoral person, the adulterer, the embezzler, and anyone else. I greet everyone, but I do not become his companion or form a close friendship with him. Thus, we might say that this separation can sometimes be physical, as in monasticism, but it can also be a separation in one’s manner of life, as the Apostle describes it.
And this separation in one’s manner of life—and sometimes physical separation as well—is commanded by God in Isaiah 52:11 and 2 Corinthians 6:17: “Come out from among them and be separate.” Come out, He says, from among worldly people and set yourselves apart. “Says the Lord. Touch nothing unclean, and I will receive you.” You are not to touch anything unclean, and then I will receive you. If, therefore, we ask how we ought to live, we would say this: serious Christians must reject the first way, that of complete coexistence with the world, because it makes a person thoroughly worldly and secularized. We must therefore live according to the other two ways.
We must combine them. We shall live in the world, while also maintaining a certain separation from people who have a worldly mindset. This way is not difficult, provided we truly desire it and take it seriously. It is not difficult simply to live in the world while sometimes withdrawing from it, or withdrawing periodically. Notice this: I withdraw periodically. I withdraw for an hour, for a day, or for a short time. Or my separation may mean, as I have told you, that I do not maintain constant close associations with worldly people. Perhaps they will label us
isolationists, culturally backward, opposed to progress, not progressive people, narrow-minded people wearing blinders, or obscurantists. My dear ones, it does not concern us. My dear ones, it does not concern us. “The righteous shall live by faith.” The righteous person will live when he places his faith in the Word of God. He is not concerned with what the world will say. And as the Apostle Peter says, make sure they cannot call you murderers, thieves, or corrupt people. That is what should concern you.
If they accuse you on this account—on account of your being a Christian—then it is to your glory and honor. What have you to fear? In this way, my dear ones, we could deal with a truly large proportion of temptations. We said that temptations are of two kinds: those that entice us with pleasure and those that bring pain. Painful temptations—those that cause suffering, that come upon us as though to assail us, strike us, and bring us to our knees—are regarded as necessary in our lives. As surprising as this may seem, I have already said it, and I repeat it now so that
we may examine it a little more closely. How did Christ allow His disciples to be tempted? He told them on the evening of Great and Holy Thursday: “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you all as wheat. But I have prayed for you and for the others. And when you have returned, strengthen your brethren.” Satan asked to sift you as wheat—to put you into a sieve and shake you through it. You have seen how, in whole-grain flour, the wheat is mixed with the bran.
We want to remove the bran, so we put the whole-grain flour into the sieve and sift it. Have you seen how the flour leaps about inside the sieve? Or, as the proverb says, “I will make you dance in the pan.” So, my dear ones, Satan asked for this. Did you hear what was said? He asked. How did he ask? Just as the devil asked concerning Job. He asked permission. The devil has no authority to do anything, much less to tempt the disciples of the Lord. He asked, and what happened? Permission was granted to him. Astonishing! Remember this: permission was granted to him. “And I have prayed,” says the Lord.
The Lord tells the Apostle Peter that during the temptation his faith must not fail. And once you have returned—He was alluding to Peter’s denial—strengthen your other brethren as well. What is contained in these words of the Lord? One could speak about them for a very long time. But Satan asked to sift you. Have you ever passed through a temptation in which you felt—truly felt—that the devil was sifting you? Such is the present trial of the city of Larissa. Accept this, if you will: the devil has put us into the sieve and is sifting us, tossing us about. But the Lord says, “Do not be afraid. Do not let your faith fail.” After every temptation there is always
a good outcome as well. Only if you become conscious of what I am telling you will we be able to stand firm. If we do not understand it, we shall not be able to stand. This is a spiritual matter, and we must understand what is happening. It is a spiritual matter. The devil is sifting us. Yes, yes. I do not know how many times I have thought about it. We speak about these things publicly as well. Many, many years ago—twenty-five years ago, at a time when nothing seemed amiss—I perceived something concerning the devil. What more would you have me say, except that
he said this: “Where do you think you can go to escape me?” Those are no small words. I truly experience this sifting by the devil in a way that you cannot know. The point is that the devil is sifting all of us, and we can do nothing but pray and remain steadfast in our place. The disciples were sifted too, and they remained steadfast. If you ask why the Lord permitted this, the answer is simply that, since temptations are necessary in our lives, the Fathers say that never to be tempted at all lies outside the reality of our life. Saint Isaac the Syrian also instructs us and says:
“Take away temptations, and no one will be saved.” Remove temptations, he says, and you will see that no one is saved. What a profound saying! I do not know whether these words console you, but they certainly console me; I tell you the truth. Above all, I am consoled by what I said before: that the devil must ask permission to sift us. Even so, Christ will not allow him to go beyond what is fitting. Saint Cyril, whose text we are studying and expanding upon at length, insists on this point, because, according to Saint Maximus the Confessor, painful temptations cleanse the soul and make it
more radiant. The classic example is Job. Have you seen what a trial Job endured? My dear ones, none of us has endured Job’s trial—not even those of you here—and perhaps we could not bear it. For God judges according to each person’s strength when permitting temptations; He will not allow more than one can bear. Job, however, is the classic example. His name would not even have been written in the Old Testament if he had not undergone that trial. After all, although he was descended from Abraham through another woman, he did not belong to the people of God. Nevertheless, through his patient endurance he became a type—a prophetic prefiguration—of Jesus Christ. The Book of Job, the book bearing his name, belongs to the primary canon and has its place
among the books of the Old Testament. And he was not a Hebrew, as I tell you once again; that is, he was not descended from Isaac and Jacob. When you go home, read the final lines—the last two, three, or four verses—of the Book of Job. I trust you will be curious to do so. And if you do not have a copy of the Old Testament, hasten to buy one, and there you will see Job’s genealogy. He did not belong to the people of God. Nor do we have only Job as an example. We also have the seven Maccabean martyrs, whose witness was a Christian-like martyrdom in the age before Christ.
Above all, we have all the martyrs of our Church and all the Saints. Which of the Saints and martyrs did not undergo temptation? Is not martyrdom itself a temptation, a trial? In this way, faith, love, and hope in God are tested. Origen says, “We must regard the temptations that confront us as a test of our love for God.” We must consider the temptations we undergo as something that tests how much love we truly have for God.
And John Chrysostom says: “Gold, when committed to the fire, casts off every stain.” Just as gold is placed in the fire, in the furnace, and there sheds every stain and every foreign impurity, so also those who are spiritually earnest become even more earnest. And when does this happen? In the midst of temptations. Saint Nilus of Sinai likewise says, “Temptations confirm the soul’s steadfast endurance”; that is, temptations reveal and strengthen it.
Above all, they reveal the soul’s patient endurance. No one—absolutely no one—has entered the Kingdom of God without temptations. I have said this many times already. No Saint, as I told you, has been spared temptations. So let us not complain about these trials. Let us not ask, “Why?” We should ask why when it comes to temptations of pleasure that have intoxicated us: “Why, Lord, am I suffering?” And we should answer ourselves: “Because I am the old man. Because I chased after pleasure, and now I am paying the price.” Then I have only myself to blame. That kind of temptation brings no honor. But painful temptations are different: they bring suffering even when I am not at fault in any way.
Someone complains, and John Chrysostom says: “If you say, ‘I am falling and perishing,’ this is not because of the nature of the temptation, but because of your own negligence.” You do not fall because temptation is by nature irresistible, but because your soul is afflicted by negligence—that is, acedia, spiritual torpor. That is why you fall. And Origen, in his commentary on the Gospel according to Luke, gives a wonderful example. He says that the wind of temptation swept you away—the wind...
The wind of temptation swept you away. Origen takes his image from the winnowing of wheat. You remember the threshing floor: the winnower, the farmer, comes and uses a special tool to toss the wheat high into the air. The tool is perforated, rather like a shovel full of holes. This is done early in the morning, and as the wheat falls, the wind carries away the chaff while the grain drops back onto the threshing floor. Origen takes this image and says: “If you complain that the wind of temptation swept you away, I tell you this: the wind of temptation is not to blame. You are, because you chose...”
You are not wheat, but chaff. That is why the wind carried you away: you are chaff. Moreover, the Apostle Paul says in First Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is human.” What has overtaken you, seized you, and taken hold of you? Nothing but an ordinary human temptation. Last night I was sitting and thinking about a certain trial that can sometimes make us despondent. And I said to myself, “It is a simple temptation. What is happening? Why should anyone be so deeply troubled? It is an ordinary temptation.” It is nothing more than a human temptation. “But God is faithful”—the Lord is trustworthy—“and He will not allow you...”
“To be tempted beyond what you are able to bear. But with the temptation He will also provide the way out, so that you may be able to endure it.” Together with the temptation, He will also give the way through, the outcome, so that you can endure the trial. The Holy Spirit assures us of this through the pen of Paul. From this petition of the Lord’s Prayer—and indeed, what does not follow from it?—there also emerges the great truth that the devil exists. We speak about the devil and say that he exists. Yet are there...
Some among us who do not believe in the existence of the devil? Undoubtedly, yes. This passage, then, shows that the devil exists; and I must tell you, the devil is a terrifying reality. His method is to conceal himself so that he may wage war against people more cunningly. You know that the Lord exposed the devil when he brought Him the temptations during the forty days—the three temptations: desire, when the stones were to become bread; vainglory; and the promise, “I will give You all the kingdoms,” which was the temptation of wealth—forgive me, of avarice—and then of vainglory.
At the pinnacle of the Temple—there the devil took Him. Consider this, my dear ones: the Lord consented to let the devil carry Him bodily and take Him to the pinnacle of the Temple. It was high, several meters above the ground, though certainly not more than ten meters. “Throw Yourself down,” he told Him. “Throw Yourself down, if You are the Son of God. The people will see that You fell and suffered no harm.” And he even uses an argument from Holy Scripture: “It is written concerning You, ‘He will command His angels concerning You.’” God, he says, commands the angels on Your behalf so that Your foot will not stumble and You will not be hurt. Holy Scripture, of course, says this about every believer, not specifically about the Messiah. The people, then, will see that You fell from such a height...
And suffered no harm. Consequently, Your messianic work will become very easy: they will believe in You at once. Three temptations. In the third temptation, when the devil said to Him, “Fall down and worship me,” the Lord answered, “Get behind Me, Satan.” It seems that the devil appeared in human form—that is, visibly and tangibly. Someone might ask, “Who is this who comes to suggest these temptations to me?” The Lord exposes him: “I know who you are. You are Satan. I know who you are.” That is why He says, “Get behind Me, Satan.” The disguise is stripped away.
This means that the devil is a terrifying reality—a terrifying reality which, unfortunately, people deny today. And how do they explain the works of Satan? They say these are psychological states within the human person. Do you hear that? Psychological states within the human person, and therefore a subjective phenomenon that religion has called Satan. According to them, the devil is not an objective personality, an objective reality. And I need hardly tell you that, unfortunately, such theories are held and proclaimed not only by many individuals, but even by the Anglican Church.
May God preserve us—from those who want to unite us, and with whom!
Preachers deliberately avoid speaking about Satan in their sermons because, they say, the congregation becomes frightened. As though the congregation were so easily frightened! And so the devil works wonderfully from concealment. He has proclaimed his own invisibility, claiming that he does not exist, and from that secure position he wages war against mankind. Do not forget when the Lord encountered the demon-possessed man in the country of the Gergesenes and cast out the demons. Their name was “Legion”—a legion, a multitude. A Roman legion numbered seven thousand.
Seven thousand. Then, to demonstrate to the unbelieving Sadducees—who did not believe that angels and demons exist—and also to the Sadducees of every century and every age that the devil is a reality, an entity, a personality—the devil himself is one, of course, while the demons are very many—the demons asked permission to enter a herd of pigs some distance away. And the Lord said, “Go.” Then the pigs became possessed, and all two thousand of them rushed into the lake and drowned. Did those pigs perhaps suffer from some psychological problem?
What do you think? Here the Lord demonstrates the objective, not subjective, existence of the demons. Have you ever seen animals go and kill themselves—collectively, no less—and pigs at that, which are terribly afraid of water? Yes, they are afraid of water. The Lord demonstrated this in the most unmistakable way.
Why does the devil tempt the human person? This shows that the human person is of immense value. Man is the image of God and possesses immense worth, because if the human person were of no account, the devil would not come to tempt him. God does not remove the devil or his works from this world. God, of course, did not create him as the devil, but as a good angel; he fell—he fell by his own free choice. The presence of the devil and his demonic activity therefore provides material for our sanctification, if we fight against him.
You will be sanctified. This is why I told you earlier what Saint Isaac the Syrian says: remove temptation, and there is no salvation. Yet God gives the human person the strength to overcome temptations. Saint Maximus the Confessor mentions something else as well. Pay attention to this; I will tell you. He says that if you have not kept the fifth petition properly and from the heart—which petition? “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors”—forgive us as we too have forgiven; that is, if you do not put this into practice, it means...
If you do not forgive the person who has wronged you, then God will not deliver you from what is mentioned in the sixth petition: temptation. You will say, “Lord, deliver me from temptation,” and the Lord will not deliver you. You will say, “Lord, lead us not into temptation,” and the Lord will not deliver you, because you did not keep the preceding petition. You left unforgiven the person, or the people, who harmed you. We must also speak about a particular temptation from which the Lord promises to preserve the believer, but on the condition that the believer...
Has kept the word of Christ. I spoke to you about this temptation yesterday, but there is no harm in speaking of it again today. In the Apocalypse, the Lord says to the bishop of the Church in Philadelphia, one of the seven Churches of Asia Minor:
“Because you have kept My word of patient endurance, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation that is coming upon the whole inhabited world, to test those who dwell upon the earth.” Because, He says, you have kept My word of patient endurance—that is, because you have shown...
He says, “You showed patient endurance in every temptation you faced. I will preserve you from that hour of temptation which is to come upon the whole inhabited world, upon the whole earth, ‘to test’ those who dwell upon the earth”—not merely those within your metropolitan district, but those upon the whole earth. My beloved, please pay close attention to this, because these words are simply an expansion of the sixth petition of the Lord’s Prayer. What is expressed in the words, “Lead us not into temptation,” is set forth at greater length in what He says to the bishop of Philadelphia. As I was telling you in yesterday’s talk, this concerns the greatest temptation of worldwide scope.
At the end of history, it will be the temptation to lose faith in the divine-human person of Christ. Yes, the great temptation will be this questioning of the faith: “Is Christ God? Is He really?” For the dreadful person of the Antichrist will be presented and set in opposition to Him. This is where the devil will wage his war: he will put forward the Antichrist—that is, a christ, a messiah, who stands at the opposite pole from the true Christ. That is precisely why he is called the Antichrist. There will also be a collapse of the ethos of the Gospel and of its spirituality.
People will have become like those who lived before the Flood. Did not the Lord say that it would be as it was then, in the days of the Flood? What were they like? They were fleshly, carnal people. Then all these people will be lost. What does it mean that they will be lost? They will worship the Antichrist. Only those who receive divine aid and help will be able to stand firm and not fall. That is why the Lord says here: “Hold fast. I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have.” I am coming quickly; hold on to what you have.
As I told you yesterday—and it does no harm to repeat it in today’s talk, since some of you may not have been here yesterday—this command, “Hold fast what you have,” refers to nothing other than the Gospel. And the Gospel sets before us nothing other than the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. This is a temptation of faith, because we know that faith in the divine-human person of Christ will fade. People will see Christ only as a mere man—“mere” in Greek is psilos, spelled with an iota. This is Arianism, which has never, ever disappeared from history. But at the end of history it will spread and become widespread. And Arianism is nothing other than the denial of the divine nature
of Jesus Christ, leaving only His human nature. And do not forget that, at this very moment, Arianism prevails in Europe. That is why Saint Justin Popovich calls it Neo-Arianism. Please read his book Man and the God-Man, and there you will see it set forth very clearly. Today, then, as we witness this fading of the divine-human person of Christ, we are already facing one of the great temptations of worldwide scope. And when we say “worldwide,” we naturally mean within the Christian world. Yet do not imagine that it affects only that world. Those who have not come to know the true God, such as the peoples of the East, see Christians
questioning the divine-human person of Christ, and they too are hindered—hindered, and that is what temptation means—from believing in the divine-human person of Christ. But, my beloved, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

ξεπερνούν με τον τρόπο της ζωής των και αυτούς τους νόμους μιας πολιτείας. Τι βλέπουμε λοιπόν εδώ; Βλέπουμε ότι ο χριστιανός ή οι χριστιανοί μπορεί να ζουν μέσα εις τον κόσμο, αλλά να μην μετέχουν στα τερτίπια του κόσμου. Δηλαδή να ζουν ευαγγελικά οι χριστιανοί, όσο μπορούν, και μπορούν. Τρίτον είναι η απομόνωση. Πώς εννοούμε τώρα την απομόνωση; Η απομόνωση, αγαπητοί μου, θα πει να μη βλέπει άνθρωπο, να μη βλέπει άνθρωπος. Βέβαια η απομόνωση, κάτω από ειδικές συνθήκες, είναι ένας τρόπος υπάρξεως, όπως είναι ο μοναχισμός. Τι είναι ο μοναχισμός;
7.000. Τότε, για να αποδείξει εις τους απίστους Σαδδουκαίους, που δεν πίστευαν ότι υπάρχουν άγγελοι και δαίμονες, αλλά και εις τους Σαδδουκαίους όλων των αιώνων και όλων των εποχών, ότι ο διάβολος είναι μία πραγματικότητα, μία οντότητα, μία προσωπικότητα —βέβαια ο διάβολος είναι ένας, οι δαίμονες είναι πάρα πολλοί— εζήτησαν οι δαίμονες να πάνε στους χοίρους μιας χοιροποίμνης λίγο πιο μακριά. Και ο Κύριος είπε: «Πηγαίνετε». Και τότε δαιμονίστηκαν οι χοίροι και πήγαν και έπεσαν όλοι, οι δύο χιλιάδες χοίροι, μέσα στη λίμνη και πνίγηκαν. Άραγε, οι χοίροι έπαθαν κανένα ψυχολογικό πρόβλημα;
