Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem explains that the final petition of the Lord’s Prayer asks God not to let believers be overwhelmed by temptation and to deliver them from evil. The martyrdom of Saint Polycarp and the failure of Quintus illustrate the need for discernment: Christians should not seek trials recklessly but trust God for strength when trials cannot be avoided. The lecture broadens temptation from individual struggles to the corrupting influence of decadent societies and cultures, interpreted through Revelation’s image of Babylon the Great.

We are in paragraph 17 of the fifth Mystagogical Catechesis of Saint Cyril, where he explains the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, to his catechumens. We have already reached its final petition, the sixth: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” As we said last time, this is the sixth and final petition. With God’s help, we began to examine it, but there was not enough time to explore it more fully.

As we have seen, this petition is extraordinarily rich—so rich, in fact, that it is said to include all the preceding petitions. I have already told you that the Our Father, the Lord’s Prayer, is said to be a summary of the whole Gospel. You understand, then, how much substance and nourishment there is in this prayer which, as Saint Cyril says, was taught by God. What provides us with a foundation

for understanding temptation in the words, “And lead us not into temptation,” is what Saint Maximus the Confessor says, and what I have already mentioned to you. I shall repeat it to remind you of this foundation, this basis, because every explanation we have given or shall give rests upon it. Saint Maximus the Confessor says: “Temptation is twofold.” It has two aspects: “one is accompanied by pleasure, and the other by pain.” I will not quote the rest just now; we discussed it last time.

“The first is voluntary and gives birth to the passions; the second is involuntary and destroys the passions.” We therefore have pleasure-seeking temptation—that is, temptation caused by the pursuit of pleasure. This is why he calls it voluntary, something deliberately chosen. I bring the temptation upon myself because I want to enjoy something, and it “gives birth to the passions.” The other kind is painful: it brings anguish and suffering. Saint Maximus says that this kind is involuntary and destroys the passions.

A person is trained through trials, and this kind of trial also removes and takes away the passions. This is a foundation for understanding the sixth petition of the Lord’s Prayer. Let us continue, then. What did I tell you I wanted us to discuss today, with God’s help? When we ask God not to permit us to be led into temptation, we mean pleasure-seeking temptation. In other words, we ask Him not to permit us to seek pleasure ourselves—pleasure in all its forms—and thus enter into temptation.

Why do we ask this? Because of our evil inclinations and our corrupted nature. If I turn on the television and watch one of those programs you describe as very indecent, something that tempts a person, and so forth, I ask you: who is doing this? I am. It would be better not to turn on the television at all, but if I do this, I myself am preparing the temptation through what I watch. And so we would say, “Lord, lead me not into temptation; do not permit me to fall into it.” Here the weakness of the will is exposed. Tell me: when I am standing before a pleasure-seeking temptation, do I not feel my will becoming paralyzed? Reason becomes captive to the will—or rather, forgive me, captive to the passion and to pleasure. The nous, the spiritual intellect, can do nothing. What does the nous say? “I see that this is evil, but I can do nothing.” The will has become paralyzed and disordered, and then a person says, “I will do it, whatever happens.” It may be a sin of the flesh with consequences—terrible consequences. “I will do it, whatever happens.” But I know what will happen. That is why I now beseech God and say, “Lead us not into temptation.” In earlier years, when I was younger, very young,

temptations, especially temptations of the flesh, come and surround a young person like bees—to use the language of Scripture—around the honeycomb. Just as bees come to the hive and surround it, so temptations come, and then one sees what I have described: the will, irrational thoughts, and so forth. At another time, then—not at the very moment of temptation, but beforehand—I should say to God: “Lord, I know that You created me free. I thank You. Yet I have the right to place the freedom You gave me into Your hands, so that You may govern it. At this moment I am at peace, but when that dark temptation comes, I, as a human being, give You permission.” I mentioned this to you once before: a person must give God permission. “I give You permission. I have placed my freedom into Your hands. Do not abandon me. When I want the sin to take place, do not let me carry it out.” This is what “And lead us not into temptation” means. We ask for this in prayer. Therefore, my beloved, we should pray, “Lead us not into temptation,” before the hour of temptation. Of course, when the temptation comes, we can say it again.

What I mean is that in this way we give God the right to act for our good. Otherwise, He entrusts to our hands the freedom He has given us and says, “Now see to it yourself.” But what can I accomplish by myself? I can do nothing, because temptation is so powerful—as we shall see later, perhaps not today—that a demon can throw the whole world into turmoil. Remember Job, I beg you. In a very short time the devil overturned everything, and messengers came to tell Job of the great destruction the devil had caused. Who can withstand such a thing?

God says, as it were: “You did not want Me to protect you. You did not place into My hands the freedom I gave you.” Understand, then, that you have no strength. Entrust yourself to Me and pray, “Lead us not into temptation.” But let us now see what Saint Cyril says, since we did not have time to examine it last time. I shall take his words and explain them briefly, because we have so much to discuss. Thank you. “Does this prayer, then, teach us that we are never to be tempted at all?” By teaching us to say, “Lead us not into temptation,” is the Lord telling us

that we are never to undergo any temptation whatsoever? Is that what the Lord means? “And how, then, is it said elsewhere, ‘A man who has not been tried is unproven’?” How is it written elsewhere in Holy Scripture, in the Old Testament, again by the Spirit of God, that “a man who has not been tried”—a person who has never undergone temptation—“is unproven”? No. God therefore provides for certain trials. You see here that both Saint Maximus and Saint Cyril tell us that these are not the same thing. One temptation differs from another.

One is accompanied by pleasure, and the other by pain. Saint Cyril continues: “And again, how are we to understand the words, ‘Count it all joy, my brethren, when you fall into various trials’?” Who says this? Saint James the Brother of the Lord, in James 1:2, as Saint Cyril notes. This rules out the idea that God will never permit you to undergo a trial. You are mistaken! You are mistaken! Saint James says, “Count it all joy, my brethren, when you fall into various trials”—but not, of course, pleasure-seeking temptation.

I told you this last time: “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God.’” God does not give you that kind of temptation. Which kind? Pleasure-seeking temptation. “For God cannot be tempted by evils, and He Himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted by his own desire,” by his own desire, “being drawn away and enticed.” He is drawn away—the temptation pulls him—and enticed: it sets bait before him. “Then desire, when it has conceived, brings forth death.” Thus Saint James also presents both forms of temptation.

Saint Cyril now makes use of Saint James. But Saint Cyril continues: “Perhaps entering into temptation means being submerged by temptation.” I want you to pay attention here. Perhaps the Word of God means something else in the Lord’s Prayer by the words, “Do not enter into temptation.” It does not mean merely encountering temptation, but being plunged into it. I shall repeat it: “To enter into temptation means to be submerged by it.”

To submerge means to immerse, to enter into a liquid element and—so to speak, as I told you—to be engulfed by temptation. Let us examine this, because Saint Cyril explains it more fully here: “For temptation is like a torrent that is difficult to cross.” What, he says, does temptation resemble? A torrent.

Some torrents are very large indeed. What a flood comes rushing down! You try to cross and you drown. Notice: you tried to cross it. “Those who are not submerged by their trials pass through them.” Everyone there finds himself in the midst of temptation.

Will they be engulfed? No; they pass through.

“Like excellent swimmers”—they know how to swim. Take note of that; they know how to swim, and I shall say something more about it shortly. “They become swimmers and are not swept away by the torrent at all.” They swim across the current and suffer no harm. They fell into the trial, into the torrent of temptation, but they knew how to swim; they crossed over and suffered nothing. “But those who are not like this”—those who cannot swim, the poor swimmers—“enter the current and are submerged”; that is, they sink and consequently drown. Saint Cyril now gives two opposite examples: one of a good swimmer and one of a poor swimmer. “For example, Judas,”

Judas should have come to his senses and said, “What am I doing?” Listen: the devil ensnared him; Scripture says that Satan entered his heart. Therefore, it was the devil who placed this temptation before him. Judas should have said, “What am I doing? Where am I? I am betraying Him—what good shall I gain?” But he did not do that. He entered into the temptation whose bait the devil had cast before him.to come to his senses and say, “What am I doing?” Listen: the devil ensnared him; Scripture says that Satan entered his heart. Therefore, it was the devil who placed this temptation before him. Judas should have said, “What am I doing? Where am I? I am betraying Him—what good shall I gain?” But he did not do that. He entered into the temptation whose bait the devil had cast before him.

The devil always saw Christ as his great adversary. The devil had also seen Him in the wilderness, where he spoke with Him. Then he set the disciple against Him—quite clearly; Holy Scripture says so plainly. It happened when Judas took the bread from the table, which the Lord gave him, and the Lord said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” Do you understand what it means to hear Him say, “Do it quickly”? Judas must have thought, “What? He has understood me; He knows.” Those words shook him: “What you are going to do, do quickly.” The disciples understood nothing. They thought he was going to buy provisions or provide something for the poor. Judas was shaken; he took the bread and immediately went out. When he took the bread, Satan then entered him and took possession of his heart.

Until that moment, then, where was Satan? What was he doing? He was prowling around Judas’s heart. But once Judas had been deceived—because he did not know how to swim and did not recognize the temptation—the devil entered him. And where did he lead him? To lose both his body, his earthly life, and his soul. “He was strangled,” Saint Cyril says; he was strangled both bodily and spiritually. “But Peter, having entered into the temptation of denial”—very well—“entered, but was not submerged; rather, he swam through courageously and was delivered from the temptation.” Peter too, he says, entered into temptation.

He denied the Lord, but he was not overwhelmed; “he was not submerged.” What did he do? “He swam bravely.” He courageously stayed afloat and did not sink, “and he was delivered”—he escaped from the temptation. How did he escape? “Peter went out and wept bitterly.” His tears began to flow. “What have I done? Oh, the Lord!” He wept bitterly, and he was saved. So one did not know how to swim, while the other did. In other words, both fell into temptation. Since temptation is like a torrent, in Saint Cyril’s image, both of them fell into it. One escaped; the other did not.

Saint Cyril continues. What does he say?

We want to recognize that this is temptation and, in the end, to escape from it. Saint Cyril continues: “Listen again elsewhere to an entire choir of Saints giving thanks because they were delivered from temptation.” Listen again to a whole choir of Saints.

They escaped from temptation. What do they say? “You tested us.” This is taken from Psalm 65, but it is a verse that was often on the lips of the Saints and Martyrs: “You tested us, O God; You refined us as silver is refined.” He tested us and refined us as silver is heated, burned, and made to glow in the furnace. “You brought us into the snare.” A snare. You brought us in. Compare this with the passage saying that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. That is what “You brought us in” means. We are in the snare, in the temptation.

“You laid afflictions upon our backs.” You placed burdens and pressures upon us. Affliction comes from a word meaning to press down or cause to sink: “upon our backs.” “You caused men to ride over our heads.” You raised our enemies over our heads. “We passed through fire and water, and You brought us out into a place of refreshment.” Then Saint Cyril says: “Do you see how confidently they speak because they passed through and were not trapped?” Do you see how they passed through? They did not sink or become stuck in the mud or the water; they did not drown. Do you see?

“You brought us out into a place of refreshment.” Saint Cyril continues and comments on this as well: “To come into refreshment is the same as being delivered from temptation.” It is identical with deliverance, as in the words “deliver us”: we were delivered from temptation. This is what refreshment means. And it may come either in this present life or in the life to come. The refreshment may not come in the present life, because the martyr gives his life. His refreshment is then in the Kingdom of God. You see, therefore, that we must not bring temptation upon ourselves, as with pleasure-seeking temptation. But painful, involuntary temptation arises from many causes, as we shall see, and we must be able—

If we cannot escape it, we must face the devil courageously. Let me give you an example from the history of the Church. Saint Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, was once being persecuted. Polycarp himself was silver-haired and very advanced in years. When he said, “For eighty-six years I have served Christ,” he may not have meant that he was eighty-six years old, but that he had served Christ for eighty-six years, in addition perhaps to the years before he began serving Christ. They summoned him. He was in hiding—notice that, he was in hiding. Why? Because he was keeping Christ’s commandment. What did Christ say? “When they persecute you in one city, go to another.” Flee; do not remain there. Do not remain in the temptation, because you may not be able to face it. And what will you do then? But if events confront you directly, I will give you strength to face them. And that is what happened. Saint Polycarp was hiding in the countryside. Eventually, when the soldiers searching for him questioned some children, they betrayed his whereabouts out of fear. “Yes,” they said, “he is in that house, on a farm.” They summoned him. “Yes,” they said, “he is in that house, on a farm.”

The soldiers knocked on the door, found Saint Polycarp inside, and what had to happen then took its course. He now saw the temptation directly before him.

He prayed. He prayed and surrendered himself, but first he asked that the soldiers be given something to eat, since other people were also staying in the house. He surrendered himself and was led into the arena. The crowd cried out for Polycarp to be put to death. Then a mighty voice was heard: “Polycarp, be strong and show yourself courageous.” And indeed, he showed himself courageous and was martyred for Christ.

The man who wrote the account of Saint Polycarp’s martyrdom also records another event from those same days. Around twelve men had come from the interior of Asia Minor to Smyrna, led by someone named Quintus, to tell the authorities there, “You should know that we are Christians.” This was reckless enthusiasm. Notice how much discernment is needed. I would tell you that discernment is the royal road that governs every virtue, including the virtue of confessing Christ. What did Christ say? You are not to go and surrender yourself, saying, “I am a Christian.”

If they arrest you, then I will give you strength to bear witness. But these men went recklessly and said, “We are Christians, and we want to be martyred.” “Very well,” the authorities told them. So they seized them, bound them, and put them into the arena where the wild beasts were. As soon as the men saw the beasts, they lost courage and sacrificed to the idols in order to save their lives. Christ abandoned them. The chronicler of Saint Polycarp’s martyrdom relates this to show that discernment is necessary in such matters. That is the point. Why? Because, as I read to you previously from Saint Maximus the Confessor—

We ask God to deliver us because we are afflicted by infirmity, that is, by weakness. But if God judges that He should not deliver us from the temptation, then He will give us strength, and we shall overcome. This is extremely important. Where do temptations come from? My dear friends, temptations have three sources: the devil, the world, and ourselves—our corrupted selves. When examined more closely, these three sources include temptations coming from the devil—

From people who are envious or malicious, or simply from other people. Temptations may also come, my dear friends, from people who bear no malice but lack discernment. If someone telephones you at three in the afternoon, do you not become irritated? Is that not a temptation for you? Or perhaps someone visits you very often, coming every day and staying for several hours. Is that not a temptation? The person bears no malice—no. But he lacks discernment and creates a temptation for you to become irritated and speak harshly. Yes. Temptations also arise from various forms of carelessness and from the body.

We face temptations from the passions of our soul, from our own carelessness, from our sloth—our spiritual laziness—and from our lack of discernment. When others cause scandal, I fall into temptation. When I cause scandal, others fall into temptation. When I expose my body in the summer, when I conduct myself as I do, all these things become sources of temptation for ourselves and for one another. Thus temptation has three sources: the devil, ourselves, and the world. If you asked me which of these three sources is the most important and most serious, I would answer: ourselves.

Our corrupted selves. This is why our Lord told us—and now you will understand what He meant—“Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.” We often ask, “How can I overcome a temptation?” By keeping watch and praying. What does it mean to keep watch? Literally, it means not to sleep. And in the particular circumstances in which the Lord said this, that is indeed what He meant. He meant that His disciples should not fall asleep. That is why He said to them, “Could you not remain awake for a little while and wait with Me?” That is the literal meaning there. But more generally, what does it mean to keep watch in the spiritual sense?

It means remaining alert so that I can see a temptation approaching. As the Lord says, you do not know when the thief is coming. Therefore, you must keep watch, because if he comes, he will seize you or take away your possessions. And why? Because he caught you asleep. Therefore, we must keep watch. When we hold an all-night vigil and celebrate the Divine Liturgy and the other services, that vigil is a symbol of many things—many things. Take note of this. One of the many meanings of the vigil is that we learn, spiritually, to remain awake, so that we are not caught asleep. That is—

We keep watch; that is, we remain alert. Our Lord also told us to pray so that we would not enter into temptation. Saint Mark the Ascetic says, “Flee from temptation.” Flee from temptation. But how are you to flee? By putting your legs to work and running? Sometimes, yes. Sometimes that too is necessary. The Apostle Paul says to the Corinthians, “Flee from sexual immorality.” To flee means to turn your back on the temptation and run away. This is the most glorious display of our backs to the enemy. You know, it is not normally considered glorious to turn your back on the enemy and run away. But here we have the most glorious kind of flight, showing that there are some things from which I can escape only by fleeing. Saint Mark the Ascetic says, “Flee from temptation”; in other words, avoid it. How? Through patient endurance and supplication. This is what Christ said. Of course, He did not mention patient endurance, but Saint Mark adds it here, and I will explain it to you: “Resistance apart from these only brings a greater attack.”

He says that if, apart from patient endurance and supplication—that is, prayer—you try to resist the devil, then he will attack you all the more. What does patient endurance mean? Without patient endurance, we accomplish nothing. We must endure, my dear friends. We must endure whatever temptation comes. Someone might say, “I feel like taking a stick to my mother-in-law and breaking her head”—I heard that today, which is why I mention it; it is fresh in my mind.

“Oh no,” I said, “certainly not. We are a long way from doing that.” What should we say? What should we do? We need patient endurance. Pay attention to this: patient endurance. You often say to me, “But what does patient endurance really mean?” Patient endurance is not an empty word. It is a power. And if you do not understand this, you will go astray. Patient endurance, therefore, is extremely important. Supplication means prayer, because through prayer you receive the strength that sustains your patient endurance. Saint Mark the Ascetic is therefore entirely correct: apart from these two things, patient endurance and prayer, you cannot drive temptation away. It will attack you again and again, with ever greater force. And what did the Lord say? “Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.” Saint Mark is speaking of what to do when the temptation is already present. The Lord means what you must do in order to escape from a—

Temptation. But do not imagine—and here I want you to pay close attention—that temptations are confined to the believer personally or to his immediate surroundings. No. Temptations have a much, much broader scope. What is this broader scope? My dear friends, listen. John the Evangelist writes prophetically in the Apocalypse, Revelation 17:1: “And I saw,” he says, “a woman sitting upon the scarlet Beast, full—”

“The Beast was covered with names of blasphemy.” The Beast is the devil. This woman sits upon the devil’s back, “holding a cup”—the woman was “holding a golden cup in her hand,” a cup resembling the Holy Chalice—“full of abominations,” full of abominations, “and the impurities of her fornication,” the impurities of her immorality within the cup. “And on her forehead a name was written.”

A name—but it is a descriptive name, not a single word. Listen to the full form of the name: “Mystery: Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.” This descriptive name was written on her forehead. “And I saw,” the Evangelist continues, “the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.” She drinks the blood of the saints and martyrs and becomes drunk. Pay close attention here.

We observe the following: temptations arising from a corrupt society and a decadent civilization. But this is a very broad subject. Allow me to say something—and do not take offense, for I have told you this before. When, with God’s help, we were interpreting the Apocalypse, I said to you at this point, as at other points: Who is it that makes our earth drunk with abominations, with the abominations of fornication, and is called Babylon?

Babylon no longer exists. Its name has remained as an image, as a symbol, and it is called the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth. As I told you, without repeating everything, this applies both figuratively and geographically. Figuratively, it is Western civilization; geographically, it is again the West. And what is this Western civilization? It is the civilization that has brought humanity to where it is today. Yes, anyone can see it. I hardly know where to begin protesting. Those American songs, for example...

I said both geographically and figuratively. What does it mean geographically? Again, it is the West. Do not be surprised by what I am saying. Notice that Japan is not geographically part of the West, yet it has Western civilization. It has Western civilization; do not forget that. And so, those American songs that rise out of the pit of the Abyss and cover the whole earth—those songs which the First Programme broadcasts, truly polluting our youth for an hour every day, even holding contests and so forth precisely to draw them into the current of those songs—certainly do not lead them to Christ.

At one time we did not understand that all this was part of a decadent civilization. Art—and I do not know whether anyone here is involved in the fine arts and may begin shouting at me—but whatever anyone may say, I tell you this: one need only know how to see. We are living amid decadent art, in every field and throughout its entire range: decadent art, and therefore a decadent civilization. If the ancient Greeks were to rise from their graves, they would beat us for the things we do today and call civilization. Now, a very long time ago, more than thirty years ago...

I obtained a foreign book—an English one—which showed how Holy Scripture was spreading throughout the world. It contained a photograph taken somewhere in Africa. There was a poster of an American actress, and several Black people were standing there looking at this film poster. The caption asked: Today, where do the peoples of Africa, for example, and of Asia look—to Holy Scripture, or to these products? I still have that book. Yes, where do they look? What will tomorrow bring? More than thirty years have passed since then, have they not? And now we already see the answer.

We see the world proceeding with mathematical certainty along the road of decadence and degeneration. Do you disagree? This decadent world, therefore—its civilization, its entertainment, and so forth—has now become what? The great temptation of humanity, the vast and all-encompassing temptation of humanity. Listen. And notice what those who refuse to yield to this temptation—the saints—do: they resist. The Evangelist John says, “And I saw this woman.” She is decadent civilization, the chaotic world, the demon-possessed world, for the woman sits upon the demon’s back—upon the back of Satan. There he sees her becoming drunk with the blood of the saints and martyrs. In other words, whoever resists this temptation becomes a martyr. And we must resist. Listen to what a certain theologian, indeed a professor, writes. The conclusion is—and I shall read it word for word, as I copied it—that the social demonization of life and history, the demonization of both social life and history...

is worse than individual and personal demonization, than something confined to me alone. For the demon does not influence individuals only; it influences entire societies, historical eras, and civilizations. The society surrounding the demon-possessed man in the country of the Gergesenes—the region of the Decapolis—was itself under demonic dominion and was not healed, because it drove Christ away. That was the worst of all. So it is. Thank you.

The final petition of the Lord’s Prayer is not merely relevant to us today; it has become critical and urgent. Let me put this more plainly. Listen: you parents are losing your children to the grasp of this temptation. “My child,” someone says, “now runs here and there, goes dancing and to discos, flirts, and has girlfriends—and now look what has happened to me.” Yes, this is that civilization. It snatches away your children, and you lose them. This is the great temptation, the exceedingly great temptation. If, on the other hand, we offer the resistance of which I spoke earlier, then in the end this...

mistreatment of the saints and the faithful will ultimately result in glory and honor for the saints and martyrs, and, of course, in their salvation. When we say, “And lead us not into temptation,” this clearly means that we too must take care, as far as we can understand and are able, to keep away from anything that may give rise to temptation. According to Saint John the Evangelist, “the whole world lies in the evil one”—the whole world. It lies in Satan’s embrace.

If we draw near to the world, if we flirt with the world, if we love the world in the moral sense, then we prepare a multitude of tempting snares for ourselves. But it is we who prepare them. Television is the world. More than twenty years ago, when television first became widely available for purchase and some people began acquiring sets, those who attended the talks on the Word of God here did not own televisions.

I told you, “Do not buy a television, because you will regret it; you will see your spiritual life sink.” I kept telling you not to buy one. If I had asked then which of you owned a television, perhaps no one would have raised a hand. If I ask now, twenty years later, who does not own one—well, yes, there are a few, but very few. I do not know whether those without a television can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And even they are being pressured to acquire one. I pray that they may remain firm, immovable, and steadfast. That is my prayer for them.

I am thinking now of the few who are listening to me. Yes, they are very few. What does this mean? It means that television is the world, and the world lies in the devil’s embrace. There it is—what more do I need to see? Then there is the modern form of entertainment, almost all of which belongs to the world. Consequently, it too lies in Satan’s embrace. Do you want another example? Even the sanctified realm of Holy Matrimony—sanctified though it is—is transformed into what we might call “the world,” because the husband or wife, or both of them, seek only to have a good time and enjoy life to the full.

They marry, and if you tell them to live a little more spiritually, to exercise some self-restraint, to make an effort when Lent comes, they reply, “Is that why I married—to practice abstinence?” And so, I repeat, even this sanctified realm called the Mystery of Holy Matrimony becomes the world and, through its manner of life, casts itself into Satan’s embrace. Hence the misery, the quarrels, the divorces, and everything else. Even education is now embraced by the devil; it too has become the world. We are doing everything we can to strip education of its Christian character.

Plato, of course, would not have answered in this way if he had been asked. He would have said that any education or learning separated from piety can be called cunning, not education—cunning. And indeed, people today are taught and initiated into the entire range of cunning and evil: how to steal, how to counterfeit, how to adulterate goods, how to break into a bank and take the money, and everything else. Why? Because education by itself does not make a human being truly human. Something is missing, because education has become the world, and it too lies in Satan’s embrace.

The world contains every form and occasion of temptation. You may then ask: How can we live within the world? How can we avoid temptations when we are in the world and inevitably experience their effects? Pay attention, my dear friends. The Lord said, “It is impossible that stumbling blocks should not come, but woe to the one through whom they come.” Why is it impossible? Because the world has taken such a form that their coming is unavoidable, since the whole world lies in the evil one.

According to the Evangelist John, it is impossible for stumbling blocks not to arise. Yet the person who creates them is accountable before God. We live, then, in a world of stumbling blocks. How should we conduct ourselves? I believe this concerns you. And do you know what a stumbling block is? It is like a stake over which I trip and fall. That is, I fall and am not saved. I am traveling toward salvation, but the stumbling block—the stake—is placed in my path; I trip, I fall, and in the end I do not reach my final destination. That is what it means to be scandalized, to be made to stumble. Now pay attention to three ways in which a believer may position himself. The first is coexistence with the world.

The second is simply existence within it, and the third is withdrawal from it. Let us say a few words about coexistence. What does coexistence mean? To coexist with the world means that the believer lives exactly as the world lives. And how does the world live? As it pleases. In other words, the believer is in no way distinguishable from the world. All the little children wear them; all the girls—students in primary school, middle school, and high school—wear trousers. Twice recently I saw school groups passing by on excursions, and among them we saw only one little girl wearing a skirt. So that little girl will say to her mother, “Mother, am I the only one who has to stand out?”

What is the child asking for? Coexistence with the world. But when we speak of coexistence in the sense of not standing apart from the world, this opens a deadly breach in the faithful, in our souls, and in the Church. For we are the ones who constitute the Church—the visible persons, the clergy, and so forth. Therefore, when we say, “It does not matter, my child; wearing trousers is no great thing,” or, “There is nothing serious about having a boyfriend,” or, “There is nothing serious about going to a café,” and when people offer such counsel in the name of the Church, they are adulterating the truth. What are they really doing?

In reality, my beloved, they do not want to be different from the world. And so today, as the Church—that is, as the body of the faithful—we are essentially no different from the world. If someone were suddenly to open your door and enter your home, would he be able to say, “Ah, I have entered a Christian home,” or, “I have entered a worldly home”? He would see no difference at all, because whatever is found in one home is also found in the other. This is how we live. But this is called secularization. I have told you this many times. Sadly, as a whole, as the Church, we are becoming increasingly secularized in this present life. But can I speak of salvation while we live this way? Certainly not.

Coexistence with the world is certainly not permissible. What, then, do simple existence in the world and separation from it mean? God willing, we shall speak about these two ways next Monday.

Θέλω να σας πω ότι με τον τρόπον αυτόν δίνουμε το δικαίωμα εις τον Θεό να ενεργήσει σε μας ευεργετικά. Αλλιώτικα, αλλιώτικα την ελευθερία που μας έδωσε μας την παραδίδει στα χέρια μας και μας λέει: «Τώρα κάνε καλά εσύ». Αλλά τι καλά μπορώ να κάνω; Τίποτα δεν μπορώ να κάνω, διότι ο πειρασμός είναι τόσο δυνατός, θα το δούμε στη συνέχεια, ίσως και όχι σήμερα, τόσο δυνατός, που ο δαίμονας αναστατώνει το σύμπαν. Θυμηθείτε, παρακαλώ, τον Ιώβ. Μέσα σε λίγη ώρα αναστάτωσε τα πάντα ο διάβολος και ήρθαν να του πουν τη μεγάλη καταστροφή που επέφερε ο διάβολος. Ποιος μπορεί να αντισταθεί;

Συνεχίζει ο Άγιος Κύριλλος. Τι λέει;

«Θλίψεις επί των νώτων ημών». Τοποθέτησες βάρη και πιέσεις. Θλίψη, από το θλίβω θα πει βουλιάζω, «επί των νώτων ημών», στην πλάτη μας. «Επεβίβασας ανθρώπους επί τας κεφαλάς ημών». Ανέβασες τους εχθρούς μας πάνω στο κεφάλι μας. «Διήλθομεν διά πυρός και ύδατος και εξήγαγες ημάς εις αναψυχήν», και μας έβγαλες σε τόπο αναψυχής. Και λέει τώρα ο Άγιος Κύριλλος: «Οράς αυτούς παρρησιαζομένους επί τω διελθείν και μη εμπαγήναι;» Τους είδες πώς περάσανε; Δεν βούλιαξαν, δεν μπήχτηκαν μέσα στη λάσπη, μέσα στο νερό, δεν πνίγηκαν. Είδες;

Ο διεφθαρμένος εαυτός. Γι' αυτό ο Κύριός μας μάς είπε —τώρα θα το καταλάβετε αυτό που είπε— «ἀγρυπνεῖτε καὶ προσεύχεσθε, ἵνα μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς πειρασμόν». Πολλές φορές θα λέγαμε: «Πώς μπορώ να νικήσω έναν πειρασμό;» Αν αγρυπνείς και προσεύχεσαι. Τι θα πει αγρυπνώ; Αγρυπνώ θα πει δεν κοιμούμαι. Βέβαια, στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση που το είπε ο Κύριος εννοούσε αυτό. Εννοούσε στους μαθητάς του να μην κοιμηθούν. Γι' αυτό τους είπε: «Δεν ισχύσατε, δεν μπορέσατε λίγη ώρα να μην κοιμηθείτε και να με περιμένετε;» Βέβαια, εκεί είναι αυτό. Γενικότερα όμως, τι θα πει αγρυπνώ με μεταφορική σημασία;

Παρατηρούμε το εξής: πειρασμούς προερχομένους από μία διεφθαρμένη κοινωνία και από έναν παρηκμασμένο πολιτισμό. Αυτό όμως είναι πολύ ευρύ. Επιτρέψτε μου να σας πω, και μη με κακίσετε, σας το έχω ξαναπεί. Τον καιρό που μιλούσαμε, που ερμηνεύαμε την Αποκάλυψη με τη βοήθεια του Θεού, σας έλεγα σε αυτό το σημείο, όπως και σε άλλα σημεία: ποιος είναι εκείνος που μεθά τη γη μας με τα βδελύγματα, τα βδελύγματα της πορνείας, και λέγεται Βαβυλών;

Τι ζητάει το παιδί; Συνύπαρξη. Αλλά όταν μιλάμε για μια συνύπαρξη, για να μην ξεχωρίζουμε από τον κόσμο, αυτό είναι ένα θανάσιμον άνοιγμα των πιστών, της ψυχής μας και της Εκκλησίας. Διότι εμείς είμαστε αυτοί που αποτελούμε την Εκκλησία. Δηλαδή τα ορατά πρόσωπα, ο κλήρος και λοιπά. Εμείς, λοιπόν, όταν λέμε «Δεν πειράζει, παιδάκι μου, δεν είναι μεγάλο πράγμα να φοράς παντελόνι» ή «Δεν είναι μεγάλο πράγμα να έχεις ένα φίλο», «Δεν είναι μεγάλο πράγμα να πας σε μια καφετέρια» και εκείνοι που συμβουλεύουν έτσι εν ονόματι της Εκκλησίας, αυτό που κάνουν είναι νοθεία των πραγμάτων. Στην πραγματικότητα τι κάνουν;
