Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis presents the Lord’s Prayer as a summary of the Gospel and Christian spiritual life. The fall of Adam and Eve placed humanity under the law of sin, while Christ came to defeat the Devil’s works and restore fallen human nature. The lecture warns that the final historical temptation will center on rejecting Christ’s divine-human identity and accepting the Antichrist’s mark in place of God’s seal.

We are still studying the catecheses of Saint Cyril, specifically paragraph 17 of the Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis. Let me remind you that, for the sake of the catechumens who had been baptized, Saint Cyril explains in these five so-called Mystagogical Catecheses the life of the Church, the life of the Mysteries, and matters of spiritual life. Here he offers an interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, which, as we said before, is in its progression a summary of the whole Gospel and of the whole spiritual life. We therefore devote ourselves to these texts so that we may receive what Saint Cyril wished to give his catechumens at that time. Of course, as I have told you repeatedly, these teachings were not sufficient in themselves, because all five Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered during the first five days of Bright Week. Saint Cyril therefore intended to return repeatedly and at greater length to these matters of faith and spiritual life

at another time—or, if you prefer, continually within the Church—so that in this way the faithful might always be formed within the Church. Precisely because what he says is so important, we broaden our discussion beyond his text. We have followed this approach throughout our exposition of Saint Cyril’s catecheses, especially here in his interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father. So do not be surprised or startled when we also refer to other Fathers of our Church

and to other related matters, because we are giving a broader treatment of the subject. Normally, I ought now to read you what he writes in paragraph 17. But because I shall refer to Saint Cyril’s text a little later, solely for the sake of the structure of the lecture, I shall not read it to you now. As I have said, I shall read it as our exposition proceeds. What is the text? “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

Literally, this means, “Do not bring us into the realm of temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” This is the final petition, and it is exceedingly important. We shall not be able to exhaust it during this hour of our talk, but, God willing, we shall continue next time. The subject is very rich, as you will soon see. For this reason, both in quantity and in substance, Saint Cyril says more

about this sixth petition than about the others. As I told you, this petition is of the utmost importance because it reveals a multitude of significant practical and doctrinal matters. For example, Satan is mentioned. But this means that Satan exists. This is no small matter; it is of tremendous importance, as we shall see. Here, then, we immediately encounter a doctrinal truth. But when the prayer says, “Lead us not into temptation”—literally, “do not bring us in,” from the verb meaning “to bring into”—it means, as I interpreted it for you, “Do not bring us into the realm of temptation.” We must therefore examine this realm first, and then consider why we ask God not to bring us into it. And if that is truly what the petition means, Saint Cyril will ask us, “Who told you that we are asking God not to bring us into temptation?” That may strike you as surprising, but we shall see. We must therefore ask: What is temptation?

We must understand this dangerous realm. Saint Gregory of Nyssa identifies temptation with the activity of the devil, or even with the devil himself, because the Lord first said in the wording of His Prayer, “And lead us not into temptation,” and then immediately afterward, “but deliver us from the evil one.” Therefore, when we say here, “Do not bring us into temptation, Lord; deliver us from temptation,” temptation is identified with the evil one, just as I told you. If the evil one here is the devil—and why I say “if” we shall examine in the proper place—then temptation and the evil one, that is, the devil, are identical here. Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, “Therefore temptation and the evil one are one and the same in meaning.” He says that temptation and the evil one mean the same thing. We immediately begin to see the approach, do we not? When we say, “Lord, do not lead us into temptation,” temptation will be understood there as the devil. But you may ask:

Will God Himself bring us near the devil? These are strange things. You will see. Even in our own modern Greek speech, when we say “the tempter,” we mean the devil, and when we say “the devil,” we mean the tempter. We say, “What does this tempter want here again?” and we mean the devil. The two are therefore identified with each other. According to Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the Lord also gives Satan many other descriptions, adopting in each circumstance the one appropriate to him. Even the word “Satan” is Hebrew, as you know, and means “the Adversary”—the one who opposes. If I remember correctly and am not mistaken, the word “adversary” appears in the New Testament, I believe in the Apostle Paul. Satan is the Adversary. If we were to express it in Greek, therefore, we would call him “the Adversary,” with a capital A. Satan also has names corresponding to the evil works he carries out and the evil movements within him. He is called Beelzebul.

Is that a Greek word? Indeed it is—no, it is a Hebrew word as well; I believe it is Syro-Phoenician. And take note, because I must tell you this too: “Beelzebul” is used for one of the cards in a deck of playing cards. A heart, perhaps? Not that you play cards, of course, but you know that this is one of Satan’s names, a name taken from outside the land of Israel. In any event, the Lord used the word “Beelzebul,” just as He also used the word “mammon.”

Mammon is the god of money; the word is not Hebrew. In the corresponding terms of Greek pagan theology—the theology of false gods—mammon would be Hermes, Hermes the Giver of Gain. That is why the Lord says, “Make friends for yourselves by means of mammon.” Here the god of money is identified with money itself. In other words, give money to the poor, so that you may make the poor your friends—not mammon, but the poor, by giving them the products of mammon, namely money. But is money truly mammon’s property? No, it is not. As Saint Cyril said, if you remember from earlier, not even a single coin belongs to Satan.

The Lord often speaks in the language people use so that He may be understood. We cannot stop to analyze every expression whenever we speak; we use the language of everyday life. So we also have the title—and I have already mentioned mammon—“ruler of the world,” or “prince of this world.” What did the Lord say? “I have nothing to do with the prince of this world.” Or, more precisely, “The prince of this world has nothing to do with Me.” He then says that the prince of this world can find nothing in Him. Do you remember? This was shortly before He went to the Garden of Gethsemane.

Do you remember? Do you know what this means? It means that the devil searches to discover what he can find in each one of us. He is the most “faithful”—and I put the word “faithful” in quotation marks—how shall I say it?—the most meticulous archivist of our deeds. He searches, and he adds accusations of his own: “You did this, and you did that.” Then our angel says, “No, he did not do that.” We have testimonies of this kind. John Climacus cites one such testimony in one of his homilies. But you see, I am ranging very far afield. The Lord also calls the devil a murderer.

“For from the beginning,” He says, “he was a murderer.” Why? Because he truly killed Adam by bringing death into the world. He is therefore a murderer. And consider also the word “devil”: he is the one who slandered God before our first ancestors when he said, “Oh, God told you this so that you would not become immortal.” What did the devil do there? He showed himself to be the devil—that is, the slanderer. He maligns God; he slanders God before our first ancestors. The Lord also calls him the evil one, as He does here, and the father of lies, “for he is its father.” The father of what? The father of the lie.

There are many other names as well. Thus, according to Saint Gregory of Nyssa, the Lord uses descriptions and names that express the characteristics of Satan’s works. Here He calls him the evil one, and He also calls him the tempter, as we shall see shortly. He is evil because his method is evil, and he is the tempter because he leads people into temptation. Temptation means putting human beings to the test. For example, concerning temptation, Matthew writes, “Then Jesus was led”

“into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.” Then, he says, Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tempted. Who was tempted? Jesus. By whom? By the devil. “To be tempted.” The devil is therefore the tempter. Luke...

The word “tempter” itself does not occur in either the New Testament or the Old Testament. Yet the idea is derived from phrases such as “to be tempted” and from the meaning of the passages. The word itself, however, is not present. The Fathers nevertheless use the word “tempter.” Saint Gregory the Theologian, for example, says that the devil is the persecutor of the light and the tempter, and that he is the great tempter, the tempter above all others. He is the one who will come at the Last Things (eschata), openly and unmasked, to tempt the whole inhabited world. Let me remind you of this, for it is an immense, very profound, and weighty subject.

Christ says to one of His Churches, one of the seven Churches, “When the great temptation comes upon the earth, I will preserve you because you have kept My word.” What is this great temptation? It is also the final temptation of history. What could it be? Here, of course, is the devil. He is the Beast, the first Beast. The second is the Antichrist. The third beast is the lamb—forgive me, that lamb—the false prophet: the lamb who appears as a lamb but is a beast. Here it is the devil who, I believe, will wage the great battle that will put humanity to the test.

This is the final temptation. Why is he called the Adversary? Because he opposes the person of Christ and His work. At that time his activity against Jesus Christ will reach its zenith, its highest point. Therefore, the great temptation will be unbelief in the person of Christ, in the divine-human person of the God-Man. “Who is Christ? Away with Him!” You hear this outside, at your workplaces, in society, and on the street. You hear people say, “Away with Him! Who is this Christ?” Such things were not said in earlier years, or were said only rarely. Now they are becoming increasingly common because this is the final temptation.

The issue is the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. Blessed is the one who will stand firm and confess the divine-human person of Jesus Christ. This is what we were saying while answering questions: “Lord Jesus Christ.” Lord means God; Jesus, man; Christ, Messiah. Blessed will that person be. But the devil is called not only the tempter but also a pirate. Methodius of Olympus says concerning the devil and the demons, “He allowed the pirates”—that is, God allowed them to come against us. He allowed the pirates, he says, because they truly are pirates of our souls and bodies. He allowed them, that is, to bring temptation upon us. They are indeed pirates of souls and bodies. And secondly, let us consider the example in Paradise. Do you know what we are doing now?

We are exploring the realm of Satan so that we may understand what the Lord meant when He taught us to say, “And lead us not into temptation.” In Paradise, the devil acted as the tempter in order to bring about the fall of our first ancestors. And because our first ancestors accepted the tempter and his words—Eve being the first

to enter into conversation with him—both our first ancestors and their descendants became utterly enslaved to the tempter, the devil. But Christ came precisely to raise us up, to restore us from our fall brought about by this tempter and “heel-striker”—another of his names. Why is he called the heel-striker, if I may ask you? Because there in the third chapter of Genesis it says, “You shall strike his heel.” That is, you shall wound his heel. The devil is therefore called the heel-striker. And, simply as a piece of general knowledge, the Hebrew name Jacob also means “heel-striker.” Does that surprise you? Esau said this about his brother after Jacob took his birthright. He said to him, “So that is why things turned out this way: when I was coming out of my mother Rebekah’s womb, you reached out your hand and caught hold of my heel.” Were they not twins? They were. One was already coming out, and the other stretched out his hand and grasped Esau’s heel. “From that time,” he says, “you have been my heel-striker, seeking my harm,” referring to when Jacob took his birthright. So much for that piece of general knowledge. The devil is also called the Ancient Serpent. The Ancient Serpent.

“The ancient serpent,” says John the Evangelist in the Apocalypse, and so forth. Therefore, the Fall brought about by the devil, and the Resurrection brought about by Jesus Christ, respectively, give us the central axis of Christian anthropology and soteriology. Let some people hear this—especially the theologians, because they do not know it. They know it, my almighty God, they know it! The devil and the Fall—the fall of mankind—and Christ, who raises Adam up, restores him to life, grants him forgiveness once again, and also resurrection; that is, He gives him back his soul with a new body. This is the central axis. What becomes of our salvation, then? What of those who say that the story of Adam is a fairy tale? As though the devil’s going there to tempt them were merely some foolish, mythical story, and so forth. Even teachers, professors, and sometimes theologians say these things. My beloved, if it is a myth—if Adam and Eve, their Fall, and the devil are myths—then the whole axis is destroyed. Then there is no meaning to Christ’s coming into the world, for He came, according to the Apostle Peter, to destroy the works of the devil. And so you understand that this is a...

...great matter. From everything we have already said, you can understand how much doctrinal significance and truth are contained in this sixth petition I mentioned. And there is still much more to come.

Before our Baptism, we truly were captives of the devil. We saw this throughout the Mystagogical Catecheses and the other catecheses of Saint Cyril, who says it at every opportunity. Indeed, he says: “Take care not to yield to the devil, because after you have driven him away, he will return more bitter and more ferocious.” Thus, through Baptism we were set free from the devil. In the almighty name of Jesus Christ and of the Holy Trinity, we said: “I renounce you, Satan. I renounce you and depart from you. I no longer acknowledge you as my lord and master.”

“I spit upon you.” That is why, facing west—which, as you remember we said, symbolizes the setting of the light and the dominion of Satan—the priest and the sponsor spit three times. “And I spit upon you,” the catechesis says: “Pah, pah, pah.” But take care: if you later begin to flirt with the devil, he will come back, and woe to you. If, however, we preserve the garment of Baptism unharmed, clean, and undefiled, then, after being delivered from Satan, we go forth to wage war against him.

The Lord gave us the pattern. I shall repeat what I have already told you, citing only the testimony of Matthew. After the Lord’s Baptism, “then Jesus”—when was this “then”? After His Baptism in the Jordan—“was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness.” The verb “led up” means to guide. More precisely, it means to guide someone to a higher place. Since the river lay lower, He went up into the wilderness, which was geographically higher. “He was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Pay attention here, and you will see something astonishing.

It was the Holy Spirit who led Him into the wilderness “to be tempted by the devil.” This begins to suggest something that Saint Cyril will explain at length. Do you know what it suggests? We ask to be protected from the devil, yet here the Holy Spirit leads Jesus to encounter the devil. And this is meant to apply to every believer. Indeed, after our Baptism, the Holy Spirit will also lead each of us to encounter the devil, with us too being guided by the Holy Spirit. Thank you very much.

We are led into a struggle and a war with our former plunderer—the one who had held us captive, our ancient adversary—with the purpose of defeating him. Remember this. That is also why the sponsor receives the oil of exorcism in the hollow of both hands. The sponsor cups both hands together like a vessel, and the priest pours oil into them. This is not Chrismation; Chrismation comes at the end and is another Mystery. With this oil the entire body of the person being baptized is anointed, as you know—the whole body.

Do you know what this means? It is a symbol. As is well known, ancient wrestlers anointed their bodies with oil. And when they wrestled, what happened? The two opponents slipped away from each other, because when you tried to seize your opponent, he was covered with oil and slipped from your grasp, while you also slipped from his. This, then, is the symbol: you are to wrestle with the adversary, slip from his grasp, and escape him. And the adversary here is precisely the devil. Even after our Fall, we must confront him successfully.

Pay attention: the tempter, the devil—or rather, the temptation of the tempter, the trial he imposed upon us and which we accepted—became, so to speak, a counter-seal placed beside the seal of the image of God.

Holy Scripture says that we were made in the image of God. This image of God constitutes our very being. We cannot remove it. It cannot be taken away. It is our being; it is what we are. This is God’s seal upon man. And what of this seal? Fortunately, it was not destroyed or lost. The image of God, as we say, merely fell.

Now this seal must be renewed, and it is impressed upon us anew through Holy Baptism, when we say: “The servant of God is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” This is my seal. And when we administer Chrismation, the other Mystery, we again say: “The servant of God is chrismated.” We say, “The seal,” and so forth. Since I do not perform baptisms, I do not have these words readily at hand in my knowledge—or rather, in my memory. How does Father Constantine say it? “The seal...”

“The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.” “The seal.” Thus, through our Baptism, God comes and seals anew what we are. It is the restoration of the image of God. That is what it is. Pay attention: the devil also comes to place his own seal upon us when...

Well... we have just heard what happened in Paradise. There, beside the seal of God, which is the image of God, the devil placed his own seal. You know that when we place a seal on something, we can tell where that object came from.

In ancient times, kings had a ring bearing the seal of the realm, as we have said, and the king always wore that seal upon his hand. It could never be counterfeited. Now, since we were born subject to Satan and held captive by him, the devil placed his own seal upon us. And do you know what he said? “They are mine; they are mine.” That is why, when Christ descended into Hades, He did not enter as every other human being did—as the devil’s possession, bearing the devil’s seal. Christ entered as the One who plunders the plunderer. To plunder means to seize the spoils, and He took back...

...what the devil had seized by virtue of his own seal. From that time onward, the devil’s seal meant that the innocence bestowed through the image of God had been lost. It was lost, and cunning and sin entered in. Therefore, this seal of Satan is what the Apostle Paul calls the law of sin. Read the epistles of the Apostle Paul: the law of sin. This law has become a seal upon us, like an instinct implanted in our very existence.

The law of sin is implanted within us and, worse still, it is inherited. For this reason, although I have been baptized, the child born to me must also be baptized. Why? Because the child I beget does not possess the seal of the Holy Spirit that I received, which corrected the seal of Satan. The child is the natural man and must also receive the seal in order to become the spiritual man. Perhaps you have wondered: if the parents have been baptized, why must the child also be baptized? Here is the answer. But pay attention now. When the devil came to our first parents...

...the seal was still outside our first parents.

The devil took up his dwelling within them and took possession of them. Then the seal became an inward reality. Thus, what had been external became internal; an outward phenomenon became an inward phenomenon. All human beings without exception bear this seal of the tempter. This is what we call ancestral sin. To put it another way, it is the inclination toward evil that exists within us. Listen to how the Apostle Paul expresses it: “But I see”—note Romans 7:23—“another law in my members.”

Another law—not the law of God, but a different law, another law. As I told you, this is the law of sin, “warring against the law of my nous”—this law of sin wages war against it—“and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which exists in my members.” It takes me captive. The words “which exists in my members” mean that it truly exists. Take care: this is not something theoretical. It is a reality, because I offer my bodily members to sin. Look at a little child. What does God say? That the inclination of man’s heart is toward evil from his youth. Look at the little child: he cannot yet understand himself.

I am speaking of the passions of the soul as well as those of the body. The child begins to discover his body and to surrender it to sin, because the law of sin has, so to speak, stamped its own indelible seal upon him—the law of sin. Is this not true? What does the Apostle Paul say? Seeing the human condition—and the Apostle is not speaking merely of himself, but in the person of every human being—he cries: “O wretched man that I am! O wretched man that I am!” Wretched because of the seal of the law of sin. “Who will deliver me from this body of death?” Who will set me free?

Who will deliver me? Who else? Indeed, the Greek verb ryo—rho, upsilon, omega—means to redeem, to set free, to deliver. Who, then, will redeem me? Who else but Jesus Christ? Now pay close attention here. Ah, notice something—something truly fearful. This is the second point. We received the devil’s first seal when we became subject to him, his captives. We bore God’s seal, but the devil placed his own seal beside it and prevailed over us. Then Christ came—Christ came, and...

we were baptized, and God’s seal was renewed in us. But through the Antichrist, with the number 666, the devil will once again place his seal upon man. Saint Paul speaks of the law of sin being ‘in my members,’ does he not? The devil, too, will place his seal upon bodily members: on the right hand and on the forehead. These are members, parts of the body. Does that surprise you? So, in Paradise, man lost God’s seal, so to speak, and the devil’s seal was placed upon him. Through Baptism he regained God’s seal, but now, through the Antichrist, he loses it again. Search Holy Scripture and see whether you can find any case in which someone who received the Antichrist’s seal ever regained God’s seal. There is no such case anywhere. I once argued with one of our own people, who said, ‘But what if he says, “I repent”?’ He will not be able to say, ‘I repent’; and even if he does say it, salvation is no longer possible. I venture to say this categorically, my beloved. This is how I understand it. This is how I understand it. What does Holy Scripture say? I shall give you two examples from the New Testament. It says that Esau—this is told in the Old Testament and cited by the Apostle in the Epistle to the Hebrews—pleaded with tears to find vindication before his father Isaac.

What does it say? He wept and shed tears and appeared to show metanoia, repentance, yet he found no vindication. He lost forever what God had taken from Esau and given to Jacob: the birthright through which the Messiah would come. Holy Scripture says something else as well, in two passages—or perhaps in the Epistle to the Hebrews; I do not remember exactly where, nor do I remember the precise wording. It speaks of the one who regarded the blood of Christ as something common. Is anything left for him? Nothing. It is over, because it was by that blood that he was saved. What can be greater than the blood of Christ, so as to save him after that? There is nothing. In other words, it is finished. The door has closed. You may say, ‘But what about repentance?’

The parable of the ten virgins teaches us this. The five returned and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ Someone might say, ‘There, they have come back; open the door.’ But the door was not opened. Let this serve for our instruction and correction. And may God preserve us, my beloved. May God truly preserve us.

Indeed, after Baptism we go forth to meet the devil, and therefore we have a great deal of work to do—a very great deal. Where are those who say, ‘I have repented; now everything is fine, and I go to Church’? We have much work to do, my beloved. Basil the Great says: ‘Those who have been baptized must immediately prepare themselves for temptations and take their stand in battle even unto death.’ Those who have been baptized must at once prepare to face temptations, because the devil has lost them; therefore, they must wage war against him.

Pay attention: do you know what ‘even unto death’ means? It means two things. First, even if you are threatened with death, as in martyrdom—the death that the martyrs were counted worthy to suffer. My beloved, I am not fit for this; I will not launch into lofty words about it now. Sometimes, when I feel cold, I think: ‘If they made me remain in the cold continually, if they cast me into the lake like the Forty Holy Martyrs, if they left me there hungry—I do not know; perhaps I would betray the faith.’ I have no strength. I do not know whether you see such strength in yourselves. We cannot claim that we would endure martyrdom. We do not know. Unless—because this is what happens—at that very hour Christ gives strength, and the Holy Spirit strengthens us

and brings forth martyrs. At present we cannot say that we would endure it. We cannot. So, ‘even unto death’ means being prepared to go as far as martyrdom. Its other meaning is that you will struggle against the demons until you die—that is, until your life comes to an end, until death overtakes you.

Thus, a person must continue fighting the demons until death. And when we say, ‘Lead us not into temptation,’ what do we mean? We have been examining the realm of temptation all this time; that is what we have been speaking about. When we say, ‘lead us not,’ we mean, ‘do not bring us into it.’ To bring into means to lead, to conduct—or, if you prefer, to allow or permit, whether by God’s good pleasure or by His allowance. Do not bring us into the realm of temptation: ‘Lead us not into temptation.’

The phrase ‘lead us into’ corresponds to Matthew’s phrase ‘was led up.’ Matthew says that the Lord was led up by the Spirit—guided by the Spirit—to be tempted, that is, to be tested and put to the trial by the devil: ‘to be tempted by the devil.’ So ‘lead us into’ corresponds to ‘was led up.’ Now notice something that at first appears contradictory. The Holy Spirit leads Christ to be tempted, and likewise leads every believer. How, then, can we ask the Holy Spirit not to lead us into temptation? How can this be? Does God lead us into temptation?

No—and yet, in another sense, certainly yes. You will say that Holy Scripture first declares that God cannot be tempted by evil and that He Himself tempts no one, as Saint James the Brother of the Lord says. Have a little patient endurance, and you will see. Saint Maximus the Confessor says that temptation has a twofold character; in other words, there are two kinds. Let me read it to you: ‘Temptation is twofold,’ says the Holy Father, ‘one kind is pleasurable, and the other painful.’ Let me even explain the Greek spelling: the word for ‘pleasurable’ is written with an eta. It means the kind that leads to pleasure. The painful kind is that which leads to, or contains...

pain—excuse me, which contains pain and suffering. The first kind, then, the pleasurable temptation, contains pleasure. The other kind—for temptation is twofold—contains pain. It is painful; it causes suffering. ‘The first is voluntary and begets the passions.’ By ‘the first,’ which one does he mean? The pleasurable temptation, the one that seeks pleasure—pleasure across its whole range, from sexual gratification to food and anything else that produces pleasure in a person. This temptation, he says, is voluntary; man desires it, and it begets the passions.

It gives birth to the passions. ‘But the other is involuntary’—the other one, that is. Which one? The painful temptation. This, he says, is involuntary, not something we choose, for who sends pain upon himself? It simply comes upon him. Who sends pain upon himself? It comes upon him. ‘And it destroys the passions’; it takes the passions away. Let me give you a small example. When I want to satisfy one of my passions—whether for food, sexual gratification, or anything else—I enjoy what I desire. Therefore, while yielding to that temptation, I experience pleasure. But when I am in pain, can I pursue pleasure?

Can I? I cannot. Suppose I am enjoying some pleasure, and someone comes and tells me, ‘Your father has died.’ Will I continue pursuing pleasure? It is extinguished—truly extinguished. The passion is extinguished at once. So here the painful temptation is indeed, as Saint Maximus says, a destroyer of the passions. It abolishes them, takes them away, removes them. ‘The voluntary temptation, then, must be fled from.’ We must avoid the voluntary, pleasurable temptation. This is why we say—this is why we say...

‘Lead us not into temptation’—into a temptation that may lead to the ruin of our soul. How often we want sin, long for it, and desire it. Lord, do not allow us to go that far. ‘As for the involuntary temptation, we should pray that it not come because of our weakness; but if it does come, we should endure it nobly, as something that purifies us.’ We certainly pray to be spared this other, involuntary temptation as well. Someone comes and provokes me, saying, ‘I will smash your face,’ and now I am brought into temptation. What should I do—become angry? This is an involuntary temptation. I did not choose it; I did not create it.

If you show patient endurance and meekness in such a situation, you have overcome the temptation and are glorified. Yet because our nature is weak, we ask, if possible, that even this temptation may not come. Tell me: when Christ said, ‘Now the Son of Man is glorified,’ in speaking about certain Greeks who had asked to see Him, do you know what He meant by His glory? The Cross. And what does the Lord ask? ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this temptation—this trial—pass from Me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’ Here the Lord taught us, although He Himself was not weak. But look at what Saint Maximus says:

‘We must flee the voluntary temptation, but pray to be spared the involuntary one because of our weakness.’ We do not know how to endure such things. The Lord endured the trial of the Cross; and while upon the Cross, He spoke with goodness and forgave those who crucified Him. Can I do that? I would therefore ask to be spared this other temptation as well—the painful, agonizing one. But if God measures my strength and permits it to come, I shall struggle. Then that temptation will be what glorifies me. It is the temptation of the Saints and Martyrs. Saint Cyril is speaking about this kind of temptation.

As I look at the time, I see that we cannot discuss it further. But here we have distinguished these two kinds of temptation. When we say, ‘Lead us not,’ we do not mean the temptation of the Saints, which will glorify us; we mean the temptation arising from our passions and desires. God, of course, does not cause us to sin; that temptation is within us. Which temptation? The pleasurable one. This is why Saint James speaks as he does. We shall now speak of the pleasurable temptation, Saint James says, and then we shall understand how the different passages of Holy Scripture agree: in one case we should pursue the trial, and in another we should not.

‘Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God.”’ No one, when tempted, should say that God is tempting him. ‘For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.’ God, he says, cannot be tempted by evil, and He tempts no one. Which kind of temptation does this mean? The temptation of the passions. Regarding the other kind of trial—and I am anticipating a little—Saint Cyril quotes: ‘You tested us and brought us into a place of refreshment.’ How wondrous! What is this purifying place of refreshment? The Kingdom of God. This is the hymn of the martyrs.

Saint Cyril continues: ‘But each person is tempted by his own desire.’ You see? By his own desire, by his own passions, ‘when he is drawn away and enticed.’ To ‘draw away’ means to pull someone and bring him out. I do not want to sin. ‘Come here; I will draw you out.’ A friend comes and says, ‘Let us go for a walk.’ I do not want to go, because I know where they intend to go. I truly do not want to go, but he pulls me, trying to draw me out. ‘And enticed’ means being lured with bait. A person takes the bait. Someone offers you pleasure, and at once you fall. ‘Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin.’

Desire conceives within my heart, and then it gives birth to death. ‘Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren,’ says Saint James. ‘Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.’ God is all goodness. The temptation lies within us. We now ask God to deliver us from this temptation within us, because by ourselves we cannot overcome it. But this is still a very great subject, and, God willing, we shall continue next Monday.

σ' αυτό το έκτον αίτημα απ' ό,τι εις τα άλλα αιτήματά του. Σας είπα, είναι σπουδαιότατον το αίτημα αυτό, διότι αποκαλύπτει ένα πλήθος σπουδαίων και πρακτικών και δογματικών θεμάτων. Όπως, επί παραδείγματι, ότι γίνεται μνεία του σατανά. Αλλά εδώ σημαίνει ότι ο σατανάς υπάρχει. Αυτό δεν είναι μικρής σημασίας, είναι τρομακτικής σημασίας, όπως θα το δούμε στη συνέχεια. Άρα, να αμέσως μια δογματική αλήθεια. Αλλά όταν λέγει «μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν», «μη μας φέρεις», επί λέξει «εισφέρεις», είναι του ρήματος «εισφέρω», έτσι; Και μη μας φέρεις εις τον χώρο του πειρασμού, όπως εγώ σας το ερμήνευσα. Πρέπει να δούμε λοιπόν πρώτα αυτόν τον χώρο και ύστερα να δούμε γιατί ζητάμε από το Θεό να μην μας φέρει εις αυτόν τον χώρο. Και αν έτσι όντως είναι, ο Άγιος Κύριλλος θα μας πει: «Και ποιος σου το είπε αυτό, ότι εμείς ζητάμε από τον Θεό να μην μας φέρει εις πειρασμό;». Σας κάνει μια εντύπωση· θα το δούμε όμως. Λοιπόν, πρέπει να ερωτήσουμε: τι είναι πειρασμός;

Το θεανθρώπινο πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού. Μακάριος εκείνος που θα μείνει όρθιος και θα ομολογεί το θεανθρώπινο πρόσωπο του Ιησού Χριστού. Αυτό που λέγαμε στις απορίες: «Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ». Κύριος, Θεός· Ιησούς, άνθρωπος· Χριστός, Μεσσίας. Μακάριος θα είναι αυτός. Αλλά ομοίως ονομάζεται όχι μόνο πειραστής, αλλά και πειρατής ο διάβολος. Ο Μεθόδιος Ολύμπου λέγει για τον διάβολο, για τους δαίμονες: «Τοὺς πειρατὰς ἀφῆκεν», δηλαδή ο Θεός ημάς. Άφησε, λέει, τους πειρατάς, γιατί είναι πραγματικά πειραταί των ψυχών μας και των σωμάτων μας. Τους άφησε, δηλαδή, να μας δημιουργούν τον πειρασμόν. Όντως λοιπόν πειραταί ψυχών και σωμάτων. Και δεύτερον, για να δούμε το παράδειγμα στον Παράδεισο. Δηλαδή τώρα ξέρετε τι κάνουμε;

Το «εισενέγκης» είναι ταυτόσημο με το «ανήχθη», που λέει «ανάγω», που λέει ο Ματθαίος, ότι ανήχθη υπό του Πνεύματος, οδηγήθηκε υπό του Πνεύματος ο Κύριος για να πειραστεί, δηλαδή να δοκιμαστεί, να μπει σε δοκιμασία από τον διάβολο. Πειρασθήναι υπό του διαβόλου. Αυτό λοιπόν το «εισενέγκης» είναι αντίστοιχο με το «ανήχθη». Προσέξτε εδώ κάτι που είναι αντιφατικό για μια στιγμή. Το Πνεύμα το Άγιο οδηγεί τον Χριστό να πειραστεί, όπως και κάθε πιστόν. Πώς τώρα ζητούμε εμείς να μη μας οδηγήσει το Πνεύμα το Άγιο εις τον πειρασμό; Πώς γίνεται; Ο Θεός οδηγεί σε πειρασμό;

Γεννάει τα πάθη. «Ο δε ακούσιος», ο δε, δηλαδή ο άλλος. Ποιος; Ο επώδυνος. Αυτός, λέγει, είναι ακούσιος, μη θεληματικός, γιατί ποιος στέλνει τον πόνο; Του έρχεται. Ποιος στέλνει τον πόνο; Του έρχεται. «Και αναιρέτης παθών», και αφαιρεί τα πάθη. Ένα μικρό παραδειγματάκι. Όταν θέλω να ικανοποιήσω κάποιο πάθος μου, φαΐ, γενετήσιο, ό,τι είναι, απολαμβάνω αυτό το οποίο θέλω. Συνεπώς, μέσα στην ενάσκηση του πειρασμού απολαμβάνω την ηδονή. Την ώρα που πονάω, μπορώ να ασκήσω την αναζήτηση της ηδονής;
