Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem interprets the third petition of the Lord’s Prayer as a plea that God’s will be fulfilled in us as perfectly as it is obeyed by the holy angels. Christ’s acceptance of the Cross demonstrates perfect obedience, and Christians likewise enter the Kingdom by bearing their own crosses in hope of resurrection. Fulfilling God’s will requires resisting the fallen self, the world, and Satan while depending on Christ, since only works done in Him endure into eternity.

My dear friends, we continue our study of the catechetical lectures of Saint Cyril. I believe you have come to love Saint Cyril’s catecheses very much, for their content is so profound. But there is something else as well: the method, the way Saint Cyril presents his catecheses, is extraordinarily instructive. I have nothing more to tell you about Saint Cyril; by now, you know him very well. Let me only say that we have reached his fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, the fifth and final one.

We have, of course, considered the Procatechesis, followed by eighteen catecheses—nineteen together—and then the five Mystagogical Catecheses: twenty-four catecheses in all. Here he speaks to us about various subjects and points, including an explanation of the Lord’s Prayer, the “Our Father.” We are at paragraph fourteen of his fifth Mystagogical Catechesis, where he says: “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” He takes up what is known as the third petition

—there are six petitions in all in the Lord’s Prayer—and explains it very briefly: “The divine and blessed angels of God do the will of God, as David said in the Psalms: ‘Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, who perform His word.’ Therefore, when you pray, what you are saying in effect is this: ‘As Thy will is done among the angels, so let it be done also on earth in me, O Master.’” In other words, he takes the words, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” and explains them in this way:

Just as the divine and blessed angels of God

do the will of God, so David also said when chanting his Psalms—and here the passage is Psalm 102, verse 20—“Bless the Lord.” The Psalmist is addressing the angels: “Bless the Lord, all His angels. You who are mighty in strength, powerful and strong, who perform His word,” who obey and heed His word. You are obedient to the will of God. So, then, when you pray, you too should say in effect:

“As Thy will is done and fulfilled among the angels, so let it be done in me upon the earth, O Lord and Master. As it is there in heaven among the holy angels, so let Thy will be done also in me here on earth.” This is all Saint Cyril tells us. Clearly, he is in haste to finish. I told you last year, as you may remember, that his five Mystagogical Catecheses were delivered during Bright Week. That is why there are five. As he puts it—I shall use his phrase—for the sake of symmetry, he is in haste to bring these Mystagogical Catecheses to an end as well, since those who had been preparing for Baptism would henceforth continue to be nourished within the Church. So he now speaks very briefly, simply to give them an initial picture

—the newly baptized, those newly illumined. That is why he says so little. Clearly, as Christians remained within the Church through the years, they would learn these things and continually deepen their understanding. Let us see, then, what is meant by this third petition of the Lord’s Prayer. The first three petitions concern God, and the final three concern man. What we shall examine today—the last of the three concerning God—is our desire to keep the will of God here on earth. But what is the will of God? You know how often we find ourselves facing some difficulty or personal matter and ask: Where is the will of God in this? What does God want us to do here and now, in this particular situation? There are, of course, matters in which we do not know the will of God, and this causes us difficulty.

It was the same in the Old Testament, when God was consulted before a military campaign, and He answered through the ephod worn by the high priest: Should we wage this war or not? And God would answer yes or no.

But there are also matters in which the will of God is unchanging. In a particular situation, of course, He may tell His people, “You shall go to war,” and in another, “You shall not go to war.” During the Babylonian Exile, they were ready to revolt against the Babylonians. But such a revolt would have been futile; it would simply have been drowned in blood. Why? Because God intended to keep the Hebrews in Babylon for seventy years. That was what God willed. Why seventy years? He tells us: they had not observed the Sabbath rests, the feast-day rests,

and the years when the fields were to remain uncultivated, as they were every seventh year. “Very well, then,” He says, “I shall now take you to Babylon, and your fields will be forced to rest.” He also commanded them to plant trees. Jeremiah went and told them this, and because of it he was in danger of being denounced as a traitor to their freedom, and so forth. In circumstances of this kind, the will of God varies, and we cannot know it. But there are also unchanging cases, and these are the ones we shall examine. When we observe them as God desires, then, in exceptional circumstances...

God reveals His will to us in the way He knows best. But when we ask what the will of God is, we must emphasize that here God appears with a will, with an “I will,” and man likewise appears with a will of his own, with his own “I will.” Therefore, when we ask that the will of God be done, either the human will must be set aside or the human will must become identical with the will of God. So there are two possibilities: setting our will aside, or bringing it into complete harmony with God’s will.

Man has an independent will because he is free and because he is made in the image of God—or, rather, he has the capacity to exercise an independent will. Before the Fall, man had no reason to set his own will against the will of God. His will was, we might say, willingly united with the will of God. His will was willingly united with God’s will. But then desire began to stir within him, awakened by Satan’s suggestion concerning the tree from which God had told them not to eat.

It was the tree that God had told them not to touch. How was this desire born? The text then says that they saw it was beautiful to look at and good to eat. In other words, desire was born. From the moment desire arose, man’s will followed that desire. It no longer followed the will of God; it followed the will of desire. Do you see? As I told you, man had previously had no reason to oppose the will of God. But now he did have a reason to oppose it, because desire dictated that he should. In this way there appeared

the autonomy of man, who no longer wished to remain under God’s guidance. Yet at that very moment, the human will was tending to unite itself with the demonic will. For the demon exercised such a fascination over our first ancestors that, in the end, the demon’s will was done; and from that time onward, man became utterly enslaved to the will of Satan. I shall say it again because it is very important: the human will was taken captive and became trapped within the will of the demon, within the will of Satan.

Thus the Apostle Paul says, “I do what I do not want.” Do you see? “I do what I do not want,” because deep within man there remains a desire to unite his will with the will of God. But then something else intervenes—the demonic will—which takes his own will captive, so that he appears to be governed by a will alien to him. If I remember correctly, there was once a poor young man who had become possessed by a demon. At intervals, his very self, his ego, would be taken over. At one point...

the demon would take his personality, his very self, captive. His own self did not disappear, but it was pushed aside, and in its place appeared the self of Satan, the self of the demon. Then the demon’s will would raise the poor young man’s own hands and strike him in the face—terrible, merciless blows. And the young man would plead, because his own will was still there in the background, though held captive: “Please, please, do not hit me; leave me alone.” Afterward, the demon would depart and he would come to himself. These are utterly strange and extraordinary things, but they are true.

And so, my dear friends, you see that from the time of the Fall onward, man handed his will over to the devil, and it was taken captive. Thus the human will is moved either by the devil or by man’s own desire. This makes it very difficult for man and his will to return once again to the will of God. Being conscious of this, what do we now do? As the Lord taught us in His own prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, we ask to set aside our own will and unite it with the will of God.

We say, “Our Father, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” But what is the will of God? I return to the question. First and foremost, the will of God is that man should be saved at every moment. This is God’s will, His primary will. By his own will, man set himself upon the path of destruction, of self-destruction. “In the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.” Yet God comes and desires to save man. Therefore, the salvation of man is the will of God.

What has God not devised for our sake! Even before the Fall, He ordained that humanity should exist as male and female, so that mankind would not be wiped out by death. Furthermore, the love and wisdom of God ordained that the One who created man, God the Word (Logos), should become incarnate, drawing very near in order to save him. Yes, then, the first will of God is that man should be saved and kept safe at every moment.

Salvation is nothing other than the restoration of man to wholeness. As the Apostle Paul says in his First Epistle to Timothy, “God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” Thus God desires everyone—all people—to be saved. Are they all saved? No. Why? Quite simply, because when man clings to his own will, that will drives him toward destruction. This is how man destroys himself. When is he saved? When he abides in the will of God. Then he is saved.

So, we must come to a true knowledge of the truth, of the way things really are. And this is nothing other than the knowledge of God and of His will. We must understand that God desires our salvation. If children, you know, could understand that their parents desire what is good for them,

they would remain obedient to their parents’ will. But they cannot grasp that their parents desire what is good for them, and so they resist and rebel. And the children say, “You do not understand. I want to live my own life. I want to do this; I want to do that.” But when their parents insist, why do they insist?

Because they want to save their children.

My beloved, no one desires the salvation of the human person as much as God does—no one at all, not even parents, who may sometimes have a completely mistaken idea of how to help and save their children. It is God who truly desires the salvation of the human person.

The health of the soul. We often speak about the health of the soul, and, truth be told, the health of the soul is absolutely essential. People today, in the twentieth century, do not possess health of soul, and this lack of spiritual health causes many illnesses. That is why psychiatrists in particular have so much work today, and doctors in general as well, because people become physically ill when the soul is ill. How do we say it in the Paraklesis? “Because of my many sins, my body is sick, and my soul is sick as well.” One sign of a healthy soul is whether it is able to discern

and understand God’s will for the salvation of the human person. If a person understands, “God desires to save me; this is His will,” that is a sign of spiritual health. Why, you may ask? For the very simple reason that what follows is easily understood. That person will immediately bring his life into harmony with the will of God. And when he does so, he is no longer in danger of becoming ill—not of catching the flu, since man lives in a world filled with disease, but of suffering those illnesses that afflict the soul and sometimes even the organs of the human body through the influence of a diseased soul. Thus, God’s will for man is what is truly good for him. He may not see that what he is doing is for his own good. My beloved, man does not easily understand what is truly good for him. He must enter—if you will allow the expression, and do not be scandalized by it—a mold. Parents likewise place their children into a mold, and that mold is what we call upbringing. What is upbringing? We speak of upbringing, but what is it? It is a mold, a form.

Children must enter this mold in order to become mature human beings. And God also places man into a mold: the mold of His commandments. A person may indeed feel confined there, yet it is there that he will discover what is truly good for him. Because man does not understand this, he asks for things that only appear to be good. He says, “Is what I ask of God not good? Is what I want to do not good?” But deep down, or in the future, the apparent good he seeks may harm him. I may ask to become a pilot, only to be killed on a flight. Yes, indeed.

How many times have I spoken about young people who gain admission and are later killed? What joy that young person and his whole household felt when he was accepted into that school! I am not telling you that young people should not go, because what would we do without aviation? I mention it only as an example in this particular case. While I was rejoicing, who could have foreseen that I would be killed? That belongs to the future. Perhaps God did not will that I should die young and therefore prevented me from being accepted. Yet how many things I would have said against God Himself for not helping me succeed! You see, then, that we cannot know, because we cannot see.

Our nous, our spiritual intellect, cannot reach into the future so that we may know what the will of God is. Therefore, let us say, “Thy will be done,” even when God’s will seems bitter and contrary to everything we desire—at least in our own eyes.

In this present life, the will of God is that we take up our Cross. Christ is our example. Both the Apostle Peter and the Apostle Paul say this plainly: we must walk in the footsteps of Christ. He took up the Cross. The Cross is bitter, of course; it is the symbol of bitterness. That is why the Lord said, speaking according to His humanity—not because He was inclined to cowardice—“O Lord, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me.” And the cup was the Cross. “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou willest.”

Therefore, the will of God is that each one of us should take up his own cross.

Thank you very much. Each person must take up his own cross, because when we bear our cross, it will save us. As we know, we do not enter the Kingdom of God without the Cross. Christ passed through the Cross into the Resurrection, and we too will enter the Kingdom of God through the Cross. Yet when God gives us the Cross, we complain. It is bitter medicine, but it brings salvation. The will of God is also that peace should prevail in our souls and throughout the world.

This is what the angels were able to sing: “And on earth peace, goodwill among men.” What is peace? It is an inward relationship between man and God, an inward relationship between man and his neighbor, and an inward relationship between man and himself. Since peace and the source of peace are found in Heaven, we pray that peace may reign on earth just as it does in Heaven. This is why we seek the will of God in our lives: so that the peace of God may also be established upon the earth.

My beloved, the will of God is that we fulfill His commandments. Some modern thinkers have claimed that keeping the commandments is mere pietism. People tend to stagger from one extreme to another. There is no denying that pietism has been promoted—the idea that one need only be a good person, without seeking anything further and without realizing that man must ultimately attain union with God. Thus, my beloved, at one time man moves toward becoming merely dogmatic,

and at another toward becoming merely pietistic. But a truly devout person will both keep God’s commandments and know the doctrines of the faith, because doctrines without the commandments are barren, while the commandments without doctrine produce a spiritual life without a guide. There is always the danger of falling into error. Therefore, we shall keep God’s commandments. The reason is that they are the will of God. Why must I keep the Ten Commandments? Yet there are not only ten. The whole of Holy Scripture consists of commandments. When the Apostle Paul says, for example, to the Philippians, “Rejoice; again I say, rejoice,”

and, “Let your gentleness be known to all men”—“Have joy; I will say it again: have joy. Let your gentleness be known to everyone”—what are these words? Are they not commandments? They are commandments. The whole of Holy Scripture consists of commandments. And what are the commandments? They are the will of God. They are the ordinances of the Holy Spirit. This is why the Apostle Paul says here, “This is the will of God: your sanctification.” This is the will of God: sanctification. And sanctification has both a negative and a positive aspect. The negative is the avoidance of sin: “You shall not steal; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not...”

“...bear false witness.” And there is also the positive aspect: “Honor your father and your mother,” “You shall love the Lord your God,” and so forth. This is why the Apostle says that without sanctification we do not enter the Kingdom of God. It is what God Himself said in both the Old Testament and the New Testament: “Become holy.” Here, then, is the will of God: that we should become saints by keeping God’s commandments. This becomes clear when a person begins to love God. Pay close attention to this point, because pietism ended up becoming an autonomous morality. Why are you good? Simply in order to be good.

You keep the commandments so that you may have peace of mind and be respectable—not because God wills it. The moment you say, “I keep the commandments so that I may be a good citizen and a good person,” you have lost everything. The moment you say, “I keep the commandments because God wills it,” you have understood correctly. Do you know, then, what is important? I begin, of course, with the first commandment: love for God. I could never keep the commandments if I did not love God. And do you know what is remarkable? When I have reached the tenth commandment—that is, when I have kept all the commandments—I return once more to the first, because the commandments have caused me...

...to love God. This is the great and important point: the will of God is not that keeping the commandments should be an end in itself, but that it should be a means. Through the commandments, man must come to love God. And this, of course, is the will of God. See how Jesus Christ Himself says it in John 14:23: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. He who does not love Me does not keep My words.” The one who loves Me fulfills My commandments, for what are the words of Christ? Say it yourselves. The one who does not love Me...

...does not keep My words; he does not keep My commandments. Therefore, first I will love Him, then I will keep the commandments, and after keeping them I will return to love Jesus Christ even more, and then more and more continually, because this greater love will send me back again to the commandments. For do not forget that the commandments have unfathomable depth. Yes, yes, indeed, their depth is unfathomable. The New Testament has revealed this unfathomable depth, and the Fathers have also demonstrated it through their interpretation of these things. Then I love God still more. And, to use the teaching and opinion of one of the Fathers—I believe it is John Chrysostom—he says that this resembles our two feet.

I stretch out the foot of love—for John Chrysostom is speaking here about love—and then, through the love of God, he says, I love my neighbor. That foot moves forward. Then I love God even more, and the first foot moves forward again. In this way, each strengthens the other: love strengthens obedience to the commandments, and the commandments strengthen love. All this produces what we call advancement, forward movement, growth, progress. This is the will of God. And the will of God, my dear friends, is also that all people should be saved. What did we say? “He desires all to be saved.” And so the faithful...

...who desire to fulfill the will of God become servants of the Word (Logos) for the salvation of mankind. The day before yesterday, two or three days ago, we commemorated Saint Thomas the Apostle. As I listened to the hymns of the service—to the hymnography, forgive me—what did it say? That the Apostles became servants of the Word. I was deeply moved by that. You too can become servants of the Word—with a capital W—the second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Word who became man. You can become servants of the Word. This, after all, is also what the Evangelist Luke says in his prologue.

Origen interprets it most beautifully: “servants of the Word.” You and I can become servants of the Word—I and you, all of us, in every age and every generation. How? By serving and ministering in the work of evangelization, that is, missionary work. What does the Apostle say to Timothy? “Do the work of an evangelist.” “Do the work of an evangelist.” A woman or a man leads a Holy Scripture study group. A woman, a man, a young man, or a young woman teaches in a catechetical school. That person becomes a servant of the Word. What an honorable title!

That is how I would like us to understand it: “servant of the Word” is a great title of honor. Yet the person who meets not only the spiritual needs of his neighbors through this sacred mission and this evangelization, but also their material needs, likewise does the will of God. What shall I remind you of? “I was sick,” and so forth, “and you visited Me; I was hungry, and you gave Me food.” This too is certainly the will of God. That is why the Lord addresses us and says, “I was sick,” and so forth. But when, my dear friends, is the will of God fulfilled?

The will of God is fulfilled when a person shows obedience to God. Yet this does not happen without opposition from Satan, the world, and our evil, fallen self.

So there are two things. We must struggle against our evil self, the world, and Satan whenever these three evil powers hinder us from doing the will of God. But we also need God’s help, because our own will cannot...

...accomplish anything truly great unless it is aided by the will of God. The Lord told us this very plainly: “Without Me you can do nothing.” Perhaps this troubles you. So many people accomplish so many things; how, then, can the Lord say, “Without Me you can do nothing”? Is the Lord not proved wrong here? What about humanism, the people of this world, the friends of the YMCA? Freemasonry also claims to be a philanthropic movement and performs charitable works, as does Rotary, and so on. Why, then, do we need Christ? Can we not accomplish so many works in this world and achieve civilization and social progress? When the Lord said that without Him we can do nothing, allow me to explain.

You can do nothing that will endure into eternity. Everything people do without Christ will not endure into eternity. On the day of judgment, they will have nothing to present, because these works were done in the name of their own will. But when works are done in the name of Christ’s will, they endure into eternity. Yet what does “on earth as it is in heaven” mean? As it is in heaven, so may it also be on earth. Please pay close attention here. You have certainly been very attentive, but your attention is especially important at this point, so that you may understand it. The Lord teaches us.

Creation is divided into two parts. There is the invisible creation, the creation of the holy angels, and the visible creation, the universe and mankind. The invisible creation abides in the will of God; these are the holy angels. To be precise, a small part of the invisible creation fell away from the will of God: the demons. But the visible creation transgresses the will of God in the person of man. And by the visible creation we mean, of course, the creation made for man. For whom was the visible creation made?

For man. And man was made for God. Thus, at that point the return is broken: from God, for “from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.” The return is broken, and creation is divided in two. The invisible creation, through the holy angels, keeps the will of God. The visible creation, represented by man, does not keep the will of God. Why? Because sin shattered the whole creation and divided it into two. What I am telling you is taught by Saint Gregory the Theologian. But when, in our prayer...

...we ask, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” what are we asking for? We are asking for the restoration and reunion of the two parts of creation. This is a great work, a truly great work. I would say that what Saint Gregory teaches is the theology of the third petition of the Lord’s Prayer: that the two broken parts of creation may be reunited. And as John Chrysostom says on this subject—I shall read it to you in translation—“The Lord tells us that we must desire heaven and the things of heaven.”

“And even before reaching heaven, He counsels us to make the earth into heaven and, while living upon it, to conduct ourselves as though we were in heaven.” In other words, this is what the Apostle Paul says: we live on earth, but our citizenship is in heaven. What did he say? “Our citizenship is in heaven.” The pattern for how we are to live as citizens is found in heaven. In this way, by following the will of God, we reunite the shattered creation. And who keeps the will of God? First of all, the holy angels, as David says in the passage cited by Saint Cyril.

He used this passage from Psalm 102. What does it say? “Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word.” If the holy angels are those who do His word—and “to do” means to carry out and fulfill the word, the will of God—then the holy angels are the first to fulfill the will of God. And a little further on in the same Psalm, the Psalmist says in the next verse, “that they may hear the voice of His words.” That the angels may hear the voice of His words...

...the words of God—the word “words” being in the genitive plural—the word of God. The holy angels are blessed; they do the will of God. They do nothing outside it—not even in the slightest do they act outside the will of God. Thus, my dear friends, the holy angels keep the will of God. How do they keep it? Let me put it this way: immediately, completely, and willingly.

Immediately, completely, and willingly—these are the three ways. It is written in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers—and by this we shall all be judged—that a certain monk was copying a manuscript. In those days manuscripts were copied by hand, because there was no printing press. He began a new paragraph with a capital letter, an omicron. Just as he had begun writing that initial capital letter, his elder, the abbot, called him. He left it at that very point, while his pen was still moving to complete it.

He put down the pen at once. He did not finish the omicron and say, “Yes, I am coming—just give me two minutes to write the omicron.” When he returned, he found the omicron completed in golden ink. This was the reward for his obedience, which showed that he was living according to the will of his elder. This, my dear friends, is what the holy angels do. They do the will of God immediately. They do not say, “In a little while” or “Later.” They obey at once. Then they do it completely; they do not do things by halves. They fulfill the will of God entirely. And they do not grumble; they do the will of God willingly.

So when we say, “on earth as it is in heaven,” this too is what we mean. We must fulfill the will of God in the same way. My dear friends, the Most Holy Theotokos also kept the will of God perfectly when she uttered those world-changing words—words that changed heaven and earth, mankind and the angels: “Let it be to me according to your word”; let it happen to me as you say. For through the Incarnation—listen carefully—not only were human beings saved, but the holy angels were saved as well. Do not be surprised, for their holiness was made steadfast.

Although angelic nature is created and changeable, it is now no longer changeable—not by nature, but by deliberate choice—through the Incarnation of the Son of God. Not only mankind but also the angelic world owes you gratitude, O Most Holy Theotokos, because of those words, “Let it be to me according to your word.” Let it happen to me as You have said. The Most Holy Theotokos continues to keep the will of God even in heaven. How does she keep it? She intercedes continually with her Son on behalf of mankind. Pay attention: do you remember what I told you? What is the foremost will of God? The salvation of mankind. And this is what the Theotokos does.

She prays, for she is an intercessor: “I have you as my intercessor,” we say in the Paraklesis, and so forth. She intercedes for the salvation of mankind. Thus, even there in heaven she does the will of God, which is, of course, the supreme will of God being fulfilled here. My dear friends, the prophets and the righteous of the Old Testament also kept the will of God. Did they do anything according to their own will? Jonah wanted to do something of his own. If you wish to consider this more deeply, God permitted it to happen. Allow me to say that He withdrew His grace.

Jonah said, “I will not go to Nineveh; I will go to Tarshish.” God permitted this in order to prepare the miracle that would stand as an antitype—a prophetic foreshadowing—of Christ’s Resurrection. Yes, then, the prophets kept the will of God. They said nothing beyond what God willed. The righteous of the Old Testament did the same. Yet wait a moment: did Abraham not fail to ask God, “Should I go down to Egypt?” God again permitted a drought to come upon the place where Abraham was staying, so that his sheep and herds had nothing to eat. And Abraham said, “I will go to Egypt; there is grass there.”

He did not ask God, and he was in danger of losing his wife, Sarah. I will say no more about that story. Pharaoh even rebuked Abraham. Read it; you will find all this in Genesis. Later, when Joseph sent word that his father should come down to Egypt with his children, Abraham’s grandson Jacob was afraid.

He remembered what had happened to his grandfather Abraham. “No,” he said, “I will not go down.” Then God appeared to him and said, “Go down to Egypt, as your son Joseph has summoned and invited you.” Only then did Jacob go.

You see, then, that the prophets and the righteous of the Old Testament did the will of God. And so did the Fathers, and so did...

...the martyrs and confessors of the New Testament. What else did they proclaim but the will of God? They kept it here on earth, and they keep it in Heaven as well by praying, praying, praying. John the Evangelist saw this in the Apocalypse, my dear friends. What did he see? He saw the golden censers, with incense rising toward the throne of God, and he says, “These are the prayers of the Saints.” Yes, they pray continually. They pray for the Church militant. They desire the salvation of mankind. Why? Because this is the will of God. And Saint Cyril concludes here—for we have expanded upon his words; he did not have the time.

It is morning for me. We have a little more time, and so we explain these things more fully. “We may therefore say this in prayer: As Your will is done among the angels, so let it be done also on earth, in me, O Master.” That is: “O Master and Lord, just as Your will is done in Heaven by Your holy angels, so let it be done in me as well. Let my will become Your will; let my will be united with Your will.” Therefore, my dear friends, when we say, “Your will be done,” we seek to set right our refusal in Paradise by keeping the will of God, His commandment.

This is a true and complete form of metanoia, of repentance. Did you hear that? Keeping the will of God is a true and complete form of repentance. And this is what will finally open Paradise to us—a better Paradise, greater than the first Paradise. And now, as we close the subject, let us make one brief literary observation, and then we shall finish. From a literary point of view, the phrase “as it is in Heaven, so also on earth” forms a beautiful transition, a graceful descent from the first three petitions, which are lofty and refer to God, to the final three, which concern man. That is...

We descend from Heaven to earth. For we have been saying, “Hallowed be Your name, Your Kingdom come,” and so forth; “Your will be done, as it is in Heaven”—all these things concern Heaven—“so also on earth.” In this smooth and most graceful literary way, we have come down to earth. And having descended to earth, in the next petition we shall say, “Give us this day our daily bread.” God willing, and provided first of all that God keeps us well, we shall speak about this next Monday.

έμεναν στο θέλημα των γονιών. Δεν μπορούν όμως να συνειδητοποιήσουν ότι οι γονείς θέλουν το καλό τους, γι’ αυτό αντιστέκονται και αντιδρούν. Και να λένε τα παιδιά: «Εσύ δεν ξέρεις. Εγώ θέλω να ζήσω τη ζωή μου, θέλω να κάνω αυτό, θέλω να κάνω εκείνο». Όταν όμως οι γονείς επιμένουν, γιατί επιμένουν;

Ήθελα έτσι να το καταλάβω με αυτό. Μεγάλος τίτλος τιμής: υπηρέτης του Λόγου. Αλλά κάνει το θέλημα του Θεού και εκείνος που καλύπτει όχι μόνο τις πνευματικές ανάγκες των πλησίων με αυτήν την Ιερά Αποστολή, με αυτόν τον Ευαγγελισμό, αλλά και εκείνος που καλύπτει και τις υλικές ανάγκες των πλησίων. Τι να σας θυμίσω; «Ασθενής ήμην» και λοιπά και λοιπά, «και επεσκέψασθέ με, πεινασμένος και με ταΐζατε». Και αυτό αποτελεί το θέλημα του Θεού, μα βέβαια. Γι' αυτό αποτείνεται ο Κύριος σε εμάς και μας λέγει το «ασθενής ήμην» και λοιπά και λοιπά. Πότε όμως πραγματοποιείται, αγαπητοί μου, το θέλημα του Θεού;

Η δημιουργία είναι κομμένη στα δυο. Είναι η αόρατος δημιουργία, η δημιουργία των Αγίων Αγγέλων, και η ορατή δημιουργία, το σύμπαν και οι άνθρωποι. Και η αόρατος δημιουργία μένει στο θέλημα του Θεού. Είναι οι Άγιοι Άγγελοι. Να ακριβολογήσω, ένα μικρό μέρος ξέπεσε από το θέλημα του Θεού, από την αόρατον δημιουργία. Είναι οι δαίμονες. Αλλά η ορατή δημιουργία, επειδή ακριβώς παραβαίνει το θέλημα του Θεού στο πρόσωπο του ανθρώπου, που εννοείται παρά η ορατή δημιουργία, το θέλημα του Θεού, γιατί για ποιον έγινε η ορατή δημιουργία;
