Summary

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem teaches that only a soul purified in deeds, thoughts, and words can confidently pray, “Thy kingdom come.” It rejects millenarian expectations of inevitable worldly progress, recalling Saint Paul’s teaching that apostasy and the man of lawlessness precede Christ’s return. The petitions concerning the sanctification of God’s name and the coming Kingdom ultimately ask for the glorification of the Son and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

With God’s help, my beloved, we now come to paragraph 13 of Saint Cyril’s Fifth Mystagogical Catechesis. I remind you that Saint Cyril is attempting, even if only in broad strokes, to reveal the depth and value of what is called the Lord’s Prayer, that is, the Our Father. This is why, throughout the Church life of those who had been baptized, provision was always made for them to continue receiving instruction and to have the Word of God unfolded for them, because, in truth, the unfolding of the Word of God never ends.

No one can say that he has exhausted the Word of God. That would be a delusion. But even if he could exhaust it, he would still need reminders, because we forget what we have learned. It is brought back to our remembrance, and through remembrance it becomes firmly established within us. Saint Cyril therefore says only a few words in his interpretation of the Our Father. Now, with God’s help, we shall consider this second petition concerning God. “Our Father, who art in heaven”—this is the invocation: “Our Father, who art in heaven.”

Hallowed be Thy name.

“Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done.” This is the second petition. I made a mistake earlier and called it the third; it is the second petition. The first three petitions naturally refer to God. At first glance, as they are worded, they concern God—what we called on a previous occasion the so-called rights of God. In reality, however, they concern us, because we are the ones in need. The final three petitions, on the other hand, deal entirely with our own concerns: “Give us this day our daily bread,” and so forth. And so, my beloved, let us see what Saint Cyril says about the words, “Thy Kingdom come.”

“The words, ‘Thy Kingdom come,’ belong to a pure soul, which can say with boldness, ‘Thy Kingdom come.’ For the man who has heard Paul say, ‘Therefore let not sin reign in our mortal body,’ and who has purified himself in deed, thought, and word, will say to God, ‘Thy Kingdom come.’” In other words, saying “Thy Kingdom come” is the work of a pure soul, so that a person may say with boldness, “Thy Kingdom come.” It is the work of a pure soul. The one who has heard Paul say, “Therefore let not sin reign in our mortal body,” and has purified himself in his deeds, in his thoughts—and the Greek word here is in the dative—and in his words, can say this. For it is well known that we sin in the nous, the spiritual intellect, in speech, and also in our actions. Some people think that only something actually done is a sin. They will tell you, “But they are only words. They are words, merely words; there is no sin in that.” What, then, is blasphemy, I ask you? It consists of words. Would you therefore say that blasphemy is not a sin simply because it consists of words?

Then there are the things we harbor within our thoughts, which are often impure—very impure. I do not mean only sexually impure thoughts, but other logismoi, intrusive thoughts: evil logismoi, slanderous logismoi, logismoi of hatred, murder, and every kind of malice. You see, then, that there are three areas in need of purification. We must purify them; and when we have purified ourselves in this way, then, as the text says, “having purified himself in deed, thought, and word, he will say to God.” That person, Saint Cyril says, will then say to God, “Thy Kingdom come.”

How can the Kingdom of God come into a person who is tormented by evil logismoi and cannot find inner stillness, whose tongue is impure, or whose deeds are dishonorable, defiled, and filthy? How can the Kingdom of God come in such a state? And when the judgment takes place, will the ungodly and sinful enter the Kingdom of God? They will not, because they will not be fit for the Kingdom of God. It is not simply that they will be punished for having been defiled and ungodly; rather, they will be unfit for it. Take note that in the Kingdom of God and in Hell—that is, after the soul’s departure—

the soul continues as it was. It becomes fixed in what it had become. I shall say it again: it becomes fixed and established in what it had become. If it was a soul given over to fornication, it will remain so even after death. You may ask, “Will the object of its desire still be there?” No, it will not. But the tormenting desire will remain—may God preserve us from such a thing. Such a person could not be in the Kingdom of God. He cannot; it is impossible. Thus, this is not simply punishment. It is the unfitness of a soul that has become fixed in sin to enter the Kingdom of God. Or how could a jealous soul enter the Kingdom of God?

If, then, a person purifies himself, he can say, “Thy Kingdom come.” But, as we have said concerning the other petitions, and repeat today, these words contain immense riches. We can therefore take Saint Cyril’s words as our starting point and say something more. “Thy Kingdom come”—may Thy Kingdom come. What does this mean? Does it mean that we should establish the state of God upon the earth? Pay very close attention, because you cannot imagine how relevant this question is today. Does “Thy Kingdom come,” then, mean that we should establish upon earth the

state of God? From the very outset, this is a sorrowful misunderstanding of the Lord’s words. Why? Because, as we shall see further on, the Lord certainly did not mean that we should establish the state of God on this earth. The Greek word for state, kratos, means power; that is its meaning in the Greek language. In one of her odes Hannah, the mother of Samuel, says, “God has wrought strength”—He has exercised might and power. But power implies enforcement, and enforcement implies the organization of society, courts, prisons, police, and so forth. Is that not so? Therefore, when we speak of the state of God, do we mean that we shall establish a state of God—that is, all the structures composing a human society—in the name of God? No! To understand “Thy Kingdom come” in this way is a dreadful, fearful, even horrifying misinterpretation. Yet on the basis of this misunderstanding, people have tried to create the state of God upon earth. Do you remember a film made some time ago in South America? I did not see it.

Roman Catholics made it, and its title was “The State of God.” My beloved, the state of God is a utopia. It cannot be established; you must not speak this way. To bring it about, people’s free choices and consciences would have to be crushed, and freedom would have to be bound tightly. Some would consent, while others would not. How, then, could such a state of God be established in God’s name? Would this not create a terrible contradiction? Does the Gospel come to restrict people’s personal freedoms and press the human will into a fixed mold? This cannot be. In the name of the Kingdom of God—the supposed state of God—terrible errors have been committed on earth. They were not only errors, but crimes, especially and above all in the West. Fortunately, this never happened in the East in the same form, because the system of papocaesarism never existed there. I called it a system; it concerns the relationship between the state and civil government—forgive me—between the Church and the state. How is that relationship ordered? Will the Church govern the state, or will the state, the civil authority, govern the Church? In the East, such a

relationship existed from the time the Church was officially recognized by the state, by the Empire of Constantine the Great. In the East there was always caesaropapism: Caesar meaning the emperor, and papism referring to the Church.

The state always governed the Church. It even made laws for the Church. Indeed, if you wish, what is called ecclesiastical law is nothing other than the body of law regulating relations between the Church and the civil state.

Canon law, however, concerns the Canons of our Church. It is the way the Gospel is interpreted in actual life, and the Canons of our Church are inspired by God; they cannot be altered. Ecclesiastical law is something different, and it is subject to change. It changes continually. Why, only today I heard that they intend to make certain amendments to the constitutional charter of the Church. What does this mean? Where does this so-called constitutional charter of the Church belong? It concerns nothing other than relations between Church and state, and so the matter belongs to ecclesiastical law. Such things change and are amended. A person may oppose an ecclesiastical law—listen carefully to what I am saying—while remaining a good Orthodox Christian, and may say:

“In the name of the Canons and Holy Scripture, this ecclesiastical rule—a rule of ecclesiastical law, not a Canon of the Church—is wrong.” What is it, for example, that makes provision for a third marriage, perhaps even a fourth and, beyond that, a fifth? What is it? The Canons? Never. It belongs to ecclesiastical law. What is it that also provides for marriage after divorce—not to mention divorce itself, but marriage after divorce? What did Christ say? It is adultery. Sometimes I say these things somewhere, and people’s consciences are scandalized. This is marriage after divorce: you obtain a divorce and marry again. Christ said that marriage is lifelong.

Yet priests perform such marriages and bishops sign the necessary documents. What does this mean? By what authority is it done? On what is it based? On what is called ecclesiastical law, not Canon law. You may ask, “Is there a contradiction?” To a great extent, yes. Do they try to avoid a contradiction? To a great extent, yes. Indeed, it is sorrowful. In any event, what I wanted you to understand is that in the East, at least, there is a system called caesaropapism: the civil state governs the Church.

For a bishop to be installed, he must receive the state’s approval; there must be a presidential decree, a royal decree, or whatever form is required under the existing system of government. The Church has no need of this. When the Lord sent His disciples into the world, they certainly did not go to obtain approval from the Jewish Sanhedrin. Did they go to ask permission or obtain some certificate? Absolutely not. This helps you understand the difference between Canon law and ecclesiastical law. Thus, the civil state often imposes its own will, and this is very wrong. I do not know how many Athanasiuses—how many men like Athanasius the Great—will be found to say what Athanasius the Great said to Constantine the Great: “Remain upon your throne as emperor and attend to your own affairs.”

“Leave the Church in peace to attend to her own affairs.” And this was despite the fact that Constantine the Great had presided over the First Ecumenical Council. At that time there was the matter of Arius: Constantine the Great insisted that Arius be allowed to concelebrate because Arius had deceived him. This is why Athanasius the Great told him, “No, no.” And do you know what caused the exiles of our father Athanasius the Great—six exiles lasting a total of sixteen years? They arose from the relationship between Church and state. For who imposed the exile? Was it the Church, or was it the civil state? You see, then, the evils of what is called caesaropapism.

Still worse is papocaesarism, and this arose in the West: the Church governs, and the civil state is subjected to the Church. Take a look at the history of medieval Europe. The Pope appointed the rulers of nations. The Pope—that is, the Church—crowned them. He raised up whomever he wished and deposed whomever he wished. Thus we have papocaesarism. Then, of course, came the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. A great effort was made in Europe—the Europe familiar to us—to free society from the Church’s control. Protestantism arose. Why did all these things happen? Because papocaesarism existed.

This is why I told you that worse things happened in the West than in the East. There they even lost the true character of Christianity. Today, for example, papocaesarism has been reduced to the form known as the “Vatican City State.” Surely you have heard the name: Vatican City State. A state. The Pope is both the head of state and the head of the Church—the two together. These are, of course, great and enormous errors, because they sought to establish “Thy Kingdom come” upon earth in this manner: once again, as a state. This is why Dostoevsky—as I have told you before—criticizes, or rather mocks, the Western Christians. In his book “The Grand Inquisitor,” the Inquisitor says to Christ:

“We put You to the flames; we will burn You. For the devil offered You bread, and You would not accept it. He offered You all the kingdoms of the earth, and You refused them. Therefore, we will burn You.” And Dostoevsky is indeed mocking them. Truly, my dear ones, you see how they think. The ruling power is not the Holy Spirit; it is money. I have mentioned this dreadful contradiction to you several times already. The Vatican bank—as we say the National Bank, the Bank of Crete, the Ionian Bank, and so forth—is called the Bank of the Holy Spirit. Yet through it, the armaments of various states are financed—armaments

that enable insurgents and others to carry out their cause. Incomprehensible things—utterly incomprehensible. Was there ever an Inquisition in the East? Never. It is a stain. Why, then, did it exist in the Western Church? Precisely because it sought to exercise control by force, and so it established the Inquisition and the stake, burning those who opposed it. All these were terrible errors and crimes—crimes beyond dispute. Yet today we have nothing less serious. Today we have the so-called Christian political parties. What does a Christian party mean?

It means, “Thy Kingdom come” on earth, in the manner and form we have just described. Whether you know this or not, my dear ones, listen to what I am telling you. I was very young when three articles were once written—let me tell you this as well—by Alexandros Tsirintanis, for those of you who know the people and circumstances involved. He was a professor of Commercial Law at the University of Athens. He had published those three articles in the journal Aktines. I read them sometime around 1950, and I have held to their position ever since: Christianity cannot become a political party. It cannot. It is another matter that

a short time, only a few years, before Tsirintanis died, he changed his view. But I have not changed mine, because this is the truth; and I glorify God, praying that I may not change my view and that God may preserve me. We cannot speak of Christian political parties. Let me tell you that Christian parties in Italy, Germany, and elsewhere have gone bankrupt. But then, can the Church also be made bankrupt? Can the Church then be brought under accusation? That those who govern should be inspired—and I emphasize, inspired—by the Gospel, I do not dispute in the least. Let the minister, the governor, the prime minister, the president of the republic, the king, or whoever holds office be a Christian. Let him be a Christian; I have no objection at all. Glory to God—would that it were so! But we must not turn

Christianity into a political party or political system. This is something that has already been tried, my dear ones. It was tried in the West—or rather, forgive me, in South America. Once I even read to you from a book written by a certain cardinal. A dreadful book, truly dreadful, which was translated into Greek. What distortions they made of the sacred text of the Gospel! I will mention just one, briefly and of necessity. They also spoke about the Kingdom of God. “What,” the author asks, “is the Kingdom of God?” This is written in the final chapter of the book. He says: “The Kingdom of God—what is it? A kingdom on earth, as we say: the Kingdom of God on earth.”

Well...

Forgive me, but we say the Kingdom of Heaven. It is not on earth; it is in heaven. What heaven? To us, Mars and the Moon are in the heavens. By that reasoning, the Kingdom of Heaven would mean a kingdom on another planet. In other words, this poor Roman Catholic never arrived at the spiritual meaning—as we shall see shortly—of the spiritual Kingdom of God. These are tragic errors, truly tragic. And there are many others, including the use of the Church as an instrument for various political aims. We have experienced that even in our own country. All these are tragic errors. This is also how Protestantism arose—its name means protest—in response to these errors, though it too, in turn,

fell into similar errors.

The Inquisition, as we said, persecutions, massacres, the Saint Bartholomew’s Day massacre. Even in Ireland they are still killing one another, and not merely over the question of independence. Protestants and Roman Catholics fight even to the point of murder, as newspapers continue to report to this day. So this diseased condition persists. But the belief—pay close attention here—that the world is steadily growing better has inspired another form of the Kingdom of God on earth: the familiar thousand-year reign, the well-known doctrine of Millenarianism. Millenarianism is very ancient, dating, if you will, from the time when John the Evangelist issued the Apocalypse—that is, when he made it public. By “published,” we do not mean that he took the book to a printing press; we mean that it was circulated and made known. He wrote of Christ’s thousand-year reign, meaning nothing other than the time between Christ’s two Comings, the period known as the age of the Gospel. Yet it was misunderstood almost at once. Even some Fathers of our Church misunderstood it, although in a spiritual sense and not in the materialistic sense of modern Millenarianism. But there is no question of an actual period of spiritual peace.

Christ said: when He comes to earth, will He find faith? The world is not growing better; Paul bears witness to this. When the Thessalonians became agitated about Christ’s Second Coming, he reassured them and said: first will come the Apostasy, and then the man of lawlessness. He does not call him the Antichrist there, but “the man of lawlessness,” whom John the Evangelist calls the Antichrist in his epistles. Pay attention: first the Apostasy. He does not say first the thousand-year reign, then the Apostasy, and then the Antichrist. What does he say? First the Apostasy, then the Antichrist. The Apostle Paul leaves no room for any thousand-year reign. So this too is a delusion: to imagine that the world is growing better. I tell you all this so that you may see what we ultimately mean when we say, “Thy Kingdom come.” What do we mean by “Thy Kingdom come”? Saint Maximus the Confessor writes:

“Thy Kingdom come”—that is, the Holy Spirit. Let Your Kingdom come; in other words, let the Holy Spirit come. Saint Gregory of Nyssa says, “Let Your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us.” Thus Saint Gregory of Nyssa is saying: Let Your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us. John Chrysostom offers this interpretation—and this is why the Fathers are a treasure. If we wish to find the true meaning, the true interpretation according to the Gospel, we must go to the Fathers.

The Fathers. John Chrysostom therefore says: “The words ‘Thy Kingdom come’ mean that one should not be attached to the things that are seen”—that is, to material things—“nor regard the things of this present life as anything great, but hasten toward the Father.” This is what Saint Ignatius the God-bearer expressed so beautifully in his Epistle to the Romans: he longed to reach the Father and said, “I desire nothing else: the drink of Christ and the bread of Christ, which are the blood of Christ and the body of Christ. I desire nothing else.” “Within me,” he says, “there is no fire that loves material things.” By fire he means desire—a desire that loves matter. It no longer exists; it has died and been extinguished. This is the teaching of John Chrysostom.

And Zigabenus, who follows John Chrysostom—let me mention this as well—in all his interpretations, sharing Chrysostom’s spirit, says: “Let Your Kingdom come upon us”; that is, “May You reign over us, and not the devil.” In other words: let Your Kingdom come upon us; let us be ruled by You and not by the devil. You have now seen three patristic positions—indeed, four patristic positions. But pay attention to something here. Please pay close attention. When Matthew records the Beatitudes—and Luke records them as well—there is a difference in wording between the two Evangelists. This is perfectly natural. Matthew writes, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” Luke writes:

“Blessed are the poor.” He does not say “in spirit.”

Of course, if someone wished to misunderstand “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” he might say, as is often said, that it means the humble. It certainly does not mean the foolish or simple-minded. Foolish people cannot be called blessed. The Lord once said to His disciples, when they failed to understand something, “Are you also still without understanding?” In other words, “Do you have no sense?” God forbid that this should be what we mean. We could say that those who possess humility are being called blessed here, and many have interpreted the passage in this way. But the phrase “in spirit” is a dative of instrument or means, if you will: it means that a person chooses, with his understanding and free will, to be poor. That is its meaning.

In other words, it is the well-known voluntary poverty. Therefore, those who are voluntarily poor are called blessed. The grammar itself supports this, and Luke helps us, because he does not include the words “in spirit,” which might confuse us, but simply says, “Blessed are the poor.” Even more strikingly, Luke uses both positive and negative expressions. After pronouncing blessed those whom he blesses—such as the poor, not those who are poor against their will, but those who freely choose poverty because they desire to remain poor for the sake of the Kingdom of God, for he says that the Kingdom of God belongs to them—Luke also gives the negative side and says further on:

“Woe to you who are full, who have eaten your fill.” But who could ever be filled to overflowing with the Spirit of God and be condemned for it? Therefore, this concerns material things. So the phrase “Blessed are the poor”—and Luke stops there—refers to those who are poor in material wealth. I have offered this as an example. Luke, of course, also records the Lord’s Prayer, with a slight difference in wording. The form recorded by Matthew became the established form that we recite. But now we come to the important point. In one ancient manuscript of Luke,

those of you who are theologians may consult the critical edition and look at the notes below, where the variant manuscript readings are listed. You will find it there. Other Fathers of our Church also use this textual evidence, because they knew of it. If you wish, those whom I have just read to you—Saint Maximus and Saint Gregory of Nyssa, among others—had this reading in mind, the one I shall now tell you. A variant reading in the Gospel according to Luke says, instead of “Thy Kingdom come,” the following: “Let Your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us.” This is why those patristic interpretations arise from this manuscript reading. We can therefore be certain—and the whole spirit of the passage confirms it—that the Kingdom of God does not come as a state or earthly government; it comes as a spiritual reality. We shall see further evidence of this shortly. We might say that what Matthew calls the Kingdom—and Saint Maximus the Confessor says this—Luke calls the Holy Spirit. They are the same in this sense. For the Kingdom of God, as you will see, is the Church, and the Holy Spirit abides in the Church. That is the meaning. Therefore, when we say

“Hallowed be Thy name,” the preceding petition, what do we mean? We ask that the Son may come and be acknowledged among us, for He said: “Father, glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You.” Therefore, when we say, “Hallowed be Thy name,” we also mean that the Son may be glorified, since the Son, as man, asks the Father that He may be glorified upon the earth. In this way, the Son glorifies the Father, and the Father glorifies the Son. This is what is contained in “Hallowed be Thy name”: we mean the glorification of the Son. When we say, “Thy Kingdom come,” we mean: let Your Holy Spirit come upon us. Thus we have here the Son and the Holy Spirit. These are the gifts for which we ask. Remember the hospitality of Abraham. I have spoken to you about it before; it is that radiant vision seen with his bodily eyes. When the three strangers came, one remained with Abraham and two went down to Sodom. The two are a type, a foreshadowing, of the Son and the Holy Spirit. They went down; they came into the world. For Sodom lies several hundred meters lower, somewhere around

eight hundred meters—I do not remember the exact figure—below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. The place where Abraham lived stood at some elevation above the surface of the Mediterranean. Notice that the difference in height was considerable enough to justify the words, “Let us go down.” Sodom represents the world as a type. The Son and the Holy Spirit descend. This is the divine economy of the Son and the divine economy of the Holy Spirit. The Father does not descend. The Son is sent by the Father, and the Holy Spirit is likewise sent by the Father.

The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father, yet He is sent by the Father. Thus we have the passage where Christ says to the Samaritan woman, “I assure you that the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.” When He said “in spirit and in truth,” He meant: in spirit, through the Holy Spirit; and in truth, through Christ, because Christ is the truth. So, in the Lord’s Prayer, when in the preceding petition we ask that the Son be acknowledged and glorified, in the next petition we ask that the Kingdom of the Holy Spirit may come. Christ said, “I will send you the Holy Spirit, who will remain with you forever.” Therefore...

“Thy Kingdom come” means, “May Your Holy Spirit come.” At once we breathe freely and say: this is a spiritual reality. “Thy Kingdom come.” So God is King. Of course God is King, my beloved. We ask Him to come and reign within us, as He reigns in Heaven. We ask Him to come within us through our own free choice, just as the angels freely accept the Kingdom of God. And the proof that they accept it by free choice is the fall of the demons. They were angels, but they did not accept the Kingdom of God.

Therefore, the angels too freely accepted the Kingdom of God. And what do we ask? That God may become King within us. Where is He to come? Into human hearts. Yes, Christ said, “The Kingdom of God is within you.” The Kingdom of God, He says, is within you. Since it is not outside us, it is within us. This was the great misunderstanding throughout history that I spoke to you about.

The Kingdom of God is present subjectively within each person: “The Kingdom of God is within you.” But the Kingdom of God also has an objective reality—not within history, but when history comes to an end, with the Resurrection of the dead, when Christ will say, “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the eternal Kingdom.” Therefore, the Kingdom of God is both subjective and objective. Subjectively, it is within us for as long as history continues, I repeat; and after the end of history, it will also be outside us. If the Kingdom of God is not within us, it is impossible for it to exist outside us as well. This is why I told you earlier about those who sin and act impiously, when we were discussing questions concerning the impious, memorial services, and so forth.

Such a person is unfit—I can put it no other way—for the Kingdom of God. There must be a correspondence between the subjective and the objective. If the Kingdom of God has been established within you, then you will also be able to see it outside you, as an objective reality. Christ told us in Luke 17:20 that the Kingdom of God does not come “with observation.” This is a devastating answer. What does it mean? It means that you see nothing outwardly changing. It does not come with observation. This answers those who say, “The Kingdom of God will come with outward signs; it will become a commonwealth, it will become a state.” It will not. Pay close attention to this.

The Pharisees believed that the Kingdom of God would come with outward signs. That is why Christ answered the Pharisees: do not expect to see something external, some outward change. When they saw Christ being crucified and His disciples suffering persecution and hardship, those unfortunate people were scandalized and could not believe, because they believed in an external kingdom that would come with observable signs. If you wish to know what keeps the Jews from believing in Christ even to this day, it is precisely this. Pay attention to me: this point is the very heart of the matter. They are still awaiting a kingdom that will come with outward signs. This is why they have remained scandalized in unbelief.

The theanthropic person of Christ, the God-Man. The Lord told Pilate that His Kingdom is not of this world. Otherwise, He said, My subjects—those who believed in Me—would now be fighting to free Me from your hands. Thus, He says, “My Kingdom is not of this world.” This shows that the interpretation identifying the Kingdom with the Holy Spirit agrees with a multitude of testimonies throughout Holy Scripture. When does the Kingdom of God come? As long as history exists, it is coming; it is always coming. When history ends, it will no longer be coming—it will be. But now it comes continually...

History still continues. What does this mean? As long as new people are being born, the Kingdom of God comes for them. It comes for us; it came for our grandparents; it will come for our children and for our grandchildren. The Kingdom of God is continually coming. Where? Within us. See what Christ said in Matthew 11:12: “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of Heaven suffers violence”—that is, it is taken by force—“and the violent seize it.” It is our sluggish self that does not readily receive the Kingdom of God, my beloved, and therefore we must exert ourselves. What is ascesis, the ascetic discipline? What is monasticism? The Fathers say: it is violence...

...against nature. You do violence to nature. Which nature? Our corrupted nature. I am lazy, gluttonous, sleepy, and so on. I will do violence to this fallen nature of mine. This is not called ascesis; it is called a cross, so that the Kingdom of God may come. Christ uses these forceful verbs: “suffers violence,” “the violent,” and even seizure—“seize it.” He uses “seize,” “the violent,” and “suffers violence” to show that unless I act in this way, the Kingdom of God will not be established within me. And what are the laws of the Kingdom? What are its laws? The Gospel, the teaching.

The Lord spoke at least seven parables, my beloved, and before each of the seven He repeatedly used the same familiar expression: “To what shall I liken the Kingdom of Heaven? To what,” He says, “shall I compare the Kingdom of God?” What does this show? It shows that the Kingdom of God cannot be expressed through a single parable or a single saying; each parable reveals different aspects of it. Which Kingdom of God? The Kingdom that is on earth. And what is this Kingdom of God on earth? The Church. The Church is the Kingdom of God on earth. And when we become members of the Church, since the Holy Spirit rests in the Church...

...then He also rests within us, and for us the Kingdom of God has come. Therefore, when we speak of the Church triumphant and the Church militant, we mean nothing other than the Kingdom of God in Heaven and the Kingdom of God on earth. This is the Kingdom. And as I told you, it is subjective now and objective tomorrow, when we have the Resurrection of the dead. The Kingdom of God, then, is nothing other than communion with the three persons of the Holy Trinity. The Father is never separated from the Son, nor the Son from the Father, nor the Holy Spirit from the Father, nor the Son from the Holy Spirit. Never, never, never. One essence, a communion of persons. God willed to create rational beings in order to extend this communion.

He created the holy angels. Wishing to extend this communion even further, He created the human person. By placing Adam and Eve on earth, He established His Kingdom. But when they sinned, He closed Paradise and set there the flaming sword, and so forth. For communion—the Church, the communion of the human person with God and the angels—had been severed and interrupted. It is restored through Jesus Christ. This is why we now say in Christ Jesus, “Thy Kingdom come.” We therefore pray to God that His Kingdom may continually come upon the earth—that is, that it may be established ever more deeply in human hearts.

But according to the parables—remember the parables of the leaven and the mustard seed—this also refers to its geographical spread. The Gospel is to be heard farther and farther afield. In other words, the Kingdom of God is to come within us and, as far as possible, within more and more people. To guard you from error, I must tell you that the Kingdom of God has absolutely no connection with the so-called New Age. The New Age is connected with the work of the coming Antichrist. The Kingdom of God has no connection with it whatsoever, nor should we describe the Kingdom as...

...a new condition upon the earth. That is the New Age. I must tell you that certain contemporary translators of the New Testament, in our own day, have rendered it in this way. There are many reasons for this; it happened then and is still happening to some extent now. The Bible Society undertook this translation and has earned a very bad reputation among those who know what a text is and what a translation is. Why the Church ultimately gave permission for the Bible Society to print it is one of the Mysteries. In any case, my point—and I am warning you through what I am saying—is that the Kingdom of God is described as “a new condition upon the earth.” You have heard what those political parties in Central and South America used to say...

“A new condition.” Or, if you prefer, in a broader sense, “the New Age.” In other words, the Kingdom of God has absolutely nothing to do with such things. And it is deliberately translated this way—deliberately—as a form of propaganda, so that one day, when you see it, you may say, “But what is happening? Look, Holy Scripture itself speaks of a ‘new condition.’” Then, because we do not know very much, we may fall into the arms of the New Age, which, as I told you, is a product of the Antichrist. The Kingdom of God has no connection with politics. We are repeating this point.

It has no connection whatsoever with political parties. I must also tell you that the Kingdom of God must be our chief purpose. We must gain the Kingdom of God. And the Kingdom of God is the Son and the Holy Spirit and the Father.

It is the Son and the Holy Spirit who come to speak within our hearts: “Abba, Father.” That is, they enable us to call God “Father.” This is the Kingdom of God: that our lives may be changed and that we may become new people.

Even for a moment. At the very moment when we might taste a little of the Kingdom of God, we must not become estranged from it. Knowing its nature and character, we must remain steadfast in it, so that we may bring our salvation to completion. I will repeat: if the Kingdom of God has not been established within us, it cannot become a reality outside us either. This is the formidable saying of Saint Symeon the New Theologian: “If you have not seen God in this present life, do not expect to see Him there either.” And when I speak of seeing God in this present life, do not imagine that we shall see Him in some vision.

Are we seeking visions and such things? No. We are to acquire this awareness of the Kingdom of God—of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are to confess that God is our Father, that He has given us every good thing, and that His love has bestowed these things upon us. And we are to conform ourselves to the commandments that His Son gave us on earth—that is, to live according to the Gospel. I wish you a blessed Pascha and a blessed summer. May the Lord bless you.

«Τὸ “Ἐλθέτω ἡ Βασιλεία σου” καθαρᾶς ψυχῆς ἐστι τὸ μετὰ παρρησίας εἰπεῖν, “Ἐλθέτω ἡ Βασιλεία σου”. Ὁ γὰρ ἀκούσας Παύλου λέγοντος, “Μὴ οὖν βασιλευέτω ἡ ἁμαρτία ἐν τῷ θνητῷ ἡμῶν σώματι”, ἀλλὰ καθάρας ἑαυτὸν πράξει, ἐννοίᾳ καὶ λόγῳ, ἐρεῖ τῷ Θεῷ· “Ἐλθέτω ἡ Βασιλεία σου”». Δηλαδή, «Ἐλθέτω ἡ Βασιλεία σου» είναι υπόθεσις καθαράς ψυχής, ώστε να μπορεί κανείς με παρρησία να λέγει να έλθει η Βασιλεία σου· υπόθεσις καθαράς ψυχής. Γιατί εκείνος που έχει ακούσει τον Παύλο να λέει: «Μη, λοιπόν, βασιλευέτω η αμαρτία στο θνητό μας σώμα», αλλά έχει καθαρίσει τον εαυτόν του και ως προς την πράξη και ως προς τις σκέψεις — ἐννοίᾳ, δοτική — και ως προς τους λόγους. Γιατί είναι γνωστό ότι αμαρτάνομε και στον νου και στον λόγο, την ομιλία, αλλά και στις πράξεις που κάνομε. Μερικοί νομίζουν ότι μόνο αυτό που θα κάνεις σαν πράξη είναι αμαρτία. Και σου λέει: «Μα, λόγια είναι. Λόγια είναι, λόγια είναι, και εκεί δεν υπάρχει αμαρτία». Τι άλλο είναι η βλασφημία, παρακαλώ; Λόγια είναι. Τι θα έλεγες, λοιπόν, ότι δεν είναι αμαρτία η βλασφημία επειδή είναι λόγια;

ψυχή παρακολουθεί. Παγιούται σε εκείνο που υπήρξε. Θα το ξαναπώ: παγιούται, σταθεροποιείται σε εκείνο που υπήρξε. Αν υπήρξε πόρνη ψυχή, πόρνη θα υπάρχει και μετά, μετά τον θάνατο. Θα μου πείτε, θα υπάρχει το αντικείμενο; Δεν θα υπάρχει. Θα υπάρχει όμως μια βασανιστική επιθυμία, η οποία, να φυλάει ο Θεός. Δεν μπορούσε ένας τέτοιος άνθρωπος να είναι μέσα στη Βασιλεία του Θεού. Δεν μπορεί. Δεν μπορεί, δεν είναι δυνατόν. Έτσι, δεν είναι απλώς τιμωρία, αλλά ακαταλληλότης μιας ψυχής που παγιώθηκε στην αμαρτία να μπει στη Βασιλεία του Θεού. Ή μία ζηλότυπη ψυχή, πώς να μπει στη Βασιλεία του Θεού;

να βγάλουν πέρα την υπόθεσή τους ως αντάρτες, ως, ως, ως. Ακατανόητα πράγματα. Ακατανόητα. Στην Ανατολή υπήρξε ποτέ Ιερά Εξέτασις; Ποτέ. Στίγμα είναι αυτό. Γιατί υπήρξε όμως στη Δυτική Εκκλησία; Επειδή ακριβώς ήθελε με τη βία να ασκήσει τον έλεγχο και καθιέρωσε την Ιερά Εξέταση και την πυρά, να καίει τους αντιδιατιθεμένους. Όλα αυτά ήταν τρομακτικά λάθη και εγκλήματα. Αναμφισβήτητα εγκλήματα. Και σήμερα όμως δεν έχουμε κάτι λιγότερο. Σήμερα έχουμε τα λεγόμενα χριστιανικά κόμματα. Τι θα πει χριστιανικό κόμμα;
